Morris County Surgeon Seeks Kidney Donor To Save His Life

I

By Dawn M Chiossi n the most ironic of twists, Dr. Marc Rubman, an orthopedic surgeon who has been helping patients for two decades, now needs a kidney transplant.

He is asking the public at large to become living kidney donors.

Disease can be insidious and unmerciful, and unfortunately no one is immune.

Rubman’s kidneys failed in 2015, due to polycystic kidney disease, a condition that he inherited from his mother.

Rubman is searching for living donors, because sadly, his condition also afflicts his family as well, so they are unable to donate their own kidney to him.

With polycystic kidney disease, the kidneys start to grow

cysts, unlike a normal kidney which is cyst free. The cysts then keep growing until they crowd out the normal kidney. Unfortunately then, the kidneys will eventually stop working.

With this particular condition there is no cure. It is the fourth leading cause of kidney failure.

Originally getting involved in the medical profession because he wanted to help others, the irony of his situation is not lost on him. Instead of being bitter, Rubman chooses to see his condition as a blessing.

“This has really given me a perspective of what patients go though, what it’s like on the other side,” he says. “In a way, it has given me a real appreciation of what is important.”

“This is a disease that unfortunately is very common, more common than you realize,” Rubman says. “And it’s one that no one’s ever heard of. People are aware of Parkinson’s because of Michael J Fox, and they are aware of ALS because of the ice bucket challenge, but not PKD.” Rubman seeks to change that.

Most people are born with two viable kidneys. In a surprising fact that most people do not know, they only need the power of one to live well. So when donating a kidney to someone else, the quality of the donor’s life is not affected, but it can be a matter of life and death to the recipient.

With an approximate two day stay in the hospital, doctors can remove the “spare,” kidney from the living donor and then he or she recovers in a matter of weeks.

Most people are familiar with organ donation in regards to donating organs after death, but in donating a living organ such as a kidney, the results are immedi-

ate.

With a donation from a deceased donor, the wait can be up to an agonizing 10 years.

Rubman is candid with what he is facing and what he is asking of others.

“Living donation is an amazing thing,” he asserts. “Due to advances in medicine people can be helped so much more, now than in the past.” Realizing that people are leery about making such a commitment, he is empathetic. “The procedure now is less invasive than in the past, recovery time is relatively short,” he says.

“In fact,” he discloses, “the donor will be “back to normal within a few weeks.”

Recalling seeing what his mother endured when she was suffering with her own kidney disease, Rubman is astounded. “The difference is crazy,” he says. “It’s phenomenal.”

But first people have to make the decision to donate. It can be as simple as filling out an application, getting a simple blood test and then getting screened.

Facing illness is a frightening experi-

ence, but with a wonderful treatment such as organ donation at the helm, folks can triumph. Recipients can go from patients to survivors, and donors can go from strangers to heroes.

While waiting for a donor Rubman lives his life going to dialysis three times a week, for a total of 15 hours. Rubman still gives his time and energies to the world, works part time and enjoys being a husband, father, brother and family man.

“I am so grateful,” Rubman shares. “I have such great support from family and friends. In a way I am so lucky; this is such a life-changing event and I’ve learned what’s important in life.”

CCM’s Third President Inaugurated, Sets New Vision For College

By Cheryl Conway fter a year settling into his position as the third president at County College of Morris in Randolph, Dr. Anthony Iacono shares his vision for a promising future.

Iacono, 49, of Mt. Arlington, was inaugurated on Friday, Oct. 6, at CCM with more than 400 attendees. He replaces Dr. Edward J. Yaw who led CCM for 30 years since 1986.

With 20 years working in education, Iacono has the skill and passion to maintain CCM’s high quality standard while strengthening its offerings to be “among the most innovative schools in the nation,” he stated.

His goals are to continue to provide high quality education; remain contemporary; build an honors program with more active internships; and expand workforce development.

With currently 8,000 students enrolled, CCM offers 100 articulation agreements between colleges and universities, 45 associate degrees and more than 25 certificate programs.

“Its high quality with small classes,” says Iacono.

To remain contemporary, Iacono says “we are build-

ing a virtual campus,” offering entire degrees online, advising and enrichment classes.

“We’ve had online classes for 15 years at least,” explains Iacono, but by reorganizing and including clubs, students can be “interacting for a holistic experience.”

Iacono also plans to expand CCM in the area of workforce development by providing more in engineering and manufacturing, tourism and hospitality, technology, and healthcare, he says.

He is hoping to build on workforce training to support employers and industries while providing more opportunities for students.

CCM is the only two year school in New Jersey to be designated by the Department of Homeland Security and NSA Designated National Center for Excellence in Cyber Security, notes Iacono.

“That’s a huge and fast growing field,” says Iacono.

Students with their associate’s degree in technology are being offered a starting salary of $50K, he says.

Out of the 19 community colleges in NJ, CCM alumni have been ranked by payscale. com to receive the highest paid

salaries with twoyear degrees, says Iacono. Out of the 1,100 community colleges in the nation, CCM is ranked in the top third for highest alumni salary.

Some graduates have gone on to become medical doctors, sheriffs, dentists, senior executives.

“You can absolutely go anywhere,” says Iacono. “Whether attorney, or engineer or hospitality, business, we are equally proud of every one of them.”

With growth comes challenge, and Iacono remains optimistic.

“We know our goals are to expand and serve the community,” he says.

To maintain enrollment and funding, Iacono says they will continue to monitor the economy, tune in to legislation and keep up with a changing industry by providing employees updated training.

It’s “not really a challenge, it’s an opportunity,” says Iacono. One needs “to pay attention to what’s going on,” in politics, education and advancements and changes in “every industry.”

Amazing professors, advanced technology, grant programs and communication are some of CCM’s strong attributes.

“We invest in a lot of ourselves,” says Iacono, by hiring the “best professors around.”

Faculty is noted for their research and publishing. “They are very current in their field.”

As far as technology, Iacono says, “Technology is essential. We have to stay ahead of those curves. We continue to expand our technology.”

Staying on top of grant programs and having advisors in each department helps “to keep us current,” in how the industry is changing in areas such as engineering, health

and culinary programs.

Communication is key. “We talk to the community” and school districts.

“We look at what do our students want? What do they need today?

It’s imperative to remember why we are all here- it’s the students.”

Working in a college setting, and in education, has been Iacono’s desired profession for the past two decades.

Iacono received an associate’s in general studies from IRSC; went on to get a bachelor’s and master’s in American history from the University of Central Florida; followed by a doctorate in American history from Mississippi State University.

Iacono was contacted about the opening at CCM and decided to apply.

Selected by the hiring committeemade up of faculty, staff, administrators and studentsthe CCM Board of Trustees made the final decision and

hired Iacono in Feb. 2016 for a threeyear contract.

“I love what the County College of Morris is all about,” says Iacono. It “lets us focus on the first two years. I like the focus on freshman and sophomore years,” with the ability for a “seamless transfer and then big scholarships,” noting that CCM has great relationships with many four year institutions.

Unlike most community colleges that focus heavily on the sciences and technology, at CCM there is equal attention between STEM and

the arts.

“We have great balance,” says Iacono.

Science, math, technology is critical, but with art- it “produces a well-rounded individual. CCM has really held its focus on that.” A year before he arrived, the college dedicated the Edward Yaw Music Technology Center.

“We really value the arts,” says Iacono. “We emphasize it as one of our priorities.

When you have that balance, you are serving your community really well. That was a real standout out for me,” in accept-

ing the CCM position.

“It was the opportunity to head up my own college,” Iacono adds, and return to the east coast with his wife, Debbie, with their four children, with two in college and two in middle school.

His new role invites him to take CCM to the next level.

“There are programs we don’t have today,” he says, such as artificial intelligence, robotics and expanded healthcare options. CCM has “50 years of great

success, great leadership, great students, great community.

“Education is about improving things for people.

I never wanted to leave the college environment. It’s just a nice environment to be in every day.”

Holiday Activities Taking Place In Pequannock

Christmas tree lighting, holiday party and other holiday events are on schedule at the Pequannock Township Department of Parks and Recreation in coming weeks.

The tree lighting is set to take place Nov. 26 at 5 p.m. at the Senior House.

On Dec. 9, a holiday party is set for 11 a.m. in Greenview Park. Holiday Bakers, a program for children ages 4 to 10, is on for Dec.

2. Watch your statements.

Start checking your credit card statements, and pay special attention to cards you don’t use often. The initial reports from the breach were that hackers may have been making charges on underused cards.

3. Check your credit reports.

You can look for suspicious items on your reports, such as new accounts being opened in your name, at all three credit report agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Free annual reports are available at www.annualcreditreport. com. You may want to stagger your use of the reports to one from each agency every four months. More frequent checks

Vietnam Memorial – The Wall That Heals

Holden he Vietnam Memorial (The Wall), in Washington, D.C., stands as a symbol of America’s honor and recognition of the men and women who served and sacrificed their lives in the Vietnam War. Three million Americans served during the war and inscribed on the 10-foot high black granite walls are the names of more than 58,200 men and women who gave their lives or remain missing; more than the Korean, War, Iraq War and Afghanistan War combined.

The Memorial was dedicated on Nov. 13, 1982, 35 years ago, and attracts more than 5.6 million visitors each year.

On The Wall, there are 1,487 names of New Jersey men and one N.J. woman, Capt. Eleanor Grace Alexander, of Westwood. But, the passing years are making it harder to remember their names. They came from almost every county and from towns such as Budd Lake, Morristown, Caldwell, Wayne, Short Hills and Long Valley.

Jan Scruggs, a Purple Heart Vietnam veteran, created the vision of the memorial. “It would help veterans heal,” he said. “Its mere existence would be societal recognition that their sacrifices were honorable rather than dishonorable.

Veterans needed this, and so did the nation. Our country needed something symbolic to help heal our wounds.”

Vietnam Memorial Wall designer Maya Lin, was a 21-year-old Yale student when her proposal for the black stone monument won the largest design competition in American history. In fact, she beat her art teacher’s submission. Lin was born in Athens, Ohio, several years after her parents fled China due to its Communist takeover in 1949.

Although she designed an apolitical monument, the politics of the Vietnam War could not be avoided. Some veteran’s groups decried the lack of patriotic or heroic symbols often seen on war memorials.

But the admirers of the Wall far outnumber the critics.

“I was passing Washington, and took a detour to visit the wall,” said one Marine veteran from Randolph who did not want to give his name. “The reverence shown by the visitors so moved me. It was as if I was visiting a holy place.

While some people were taking pictures, or making rubbings, they all showed a quiet respect.”

For those of us who have visited the wall it is a memorial one will never forget. For many it unlocks memories, and begins the healing process.

Seasonal decorations. The holidays bring about a variety of color and light that make the atmosphere look quite magnificent. But beware of nosy pups with mischief on the mind.

Power cords can be very dangerous for a pup that likes to

chew. Make sure they are hidden out of reach so no one gets hurt. Besides lighting, we often decorate our homes with pretty plants such as mistletoe, poinsettia and holly. Unfortunately, all these plants are actually very toxic — especially for dogs.

Consider going with a synthetic likeness that looks just as pretty. (And you can use it again next year — save some money!)

Besides the house decorations, presents often get decorated, too. Wrapping paper is fun for both man and dog, but we don’t usually eat it. A pup may find it quite tasty, but will likely just end up with a belly-ache.

Hot dog. Candles make the house look and smell nice, but there is a bit of a hazard to this.

A happy tail or a nosy snout can knock a candle over and burn your pup or catch something on fire. If you have candles, keep them up high and never leave the home without making sure they’re out. Another concern is the fireplace. Those flickering flames can intrigue a curious

pup, so make sure you use a fireplace protector or screen to keep any noses from being singed.

Time for eats. The festivities and food are going to be almost every dog’s weakness. Honestly, who can resist a tasty piece of what’s cooking? Items on the table top left unattended can make a likely target for an eager pup, so keep things out of reach — and no paws on the table. Unfortunately, dogs aren’t always the culprit. Sometimes they’re just the victim of some sneaky hands that tossed them a spoonful off their plate. Make sure that everyone knows not to feed the pup, and if you continued on page 11

don’t want to take any chances, put your pup somewhere where they won’t get tempted. Don’t forget to give them their own snacks and toys to enjoy.

The table top isn’t the only place a sneaky snout might wander. After all is cooked and eaten, there’s likely to be a few leftovers. And where do some leftovers end up? After scraping plates clean, we often end up with some scraps in the garbage can. So make sure to bag it and toss it before anyone gets any ideas.

Now, table scraps might not sound too concerning for some folks, but keep in mind that there are several dinner items that can make a pup extremely sick. Raisins and grapes are notorious for upsetting a pup’s belly and often make it to a countertop fruit ornamentation basket. Onions add flavor to a meal, but they aren’t any better for a pup. And chocolate is one of the worst, but possibly the most popular for the season. Make sure to keep any and all of these foods out of your pup’s reach, and inform visitors not to feed them these

specific things.

Along that topic comes the “merry” part of the holidays. We should all eat, drink and be merry, but pups shouldn’t be doing any drinking (even if they aren’t driving). Beer and other alcoholic beverages are dangerous to pups’ bodies. They don’t experience it the way we do, and organs such as their liver and kidneys can be damaged very easily by alcohol.

Holidays are supposed to be fun, and you can make them as fun as you want. Just be sure that you keep your pup safe and out of harm’s way so you can both enjoy the season festivities.

As Halloween Creeps Away, Chill Sets In With NJ Brothers’ Scary Christmas Film

By Stefanie Sears hristmas is getting a chiller treatment with “Killer Christmas,” an upcoming independent feature film written, directed, and produced by Shaker Productions, a new filmmaking company co-founded by Englewood Cliffs brothers PeterPaul and Tony Shaker.

The pair acts in the movie as well. PeterPaul Shaker- a former lawyer who obtained some screenwriting experience in Los Angeles and has been writing since 2007 while living in New York, portrays Rudolph.

Tony Shaker, who quit his software developer job to focus solely on the film, plays one of the main characters, Robbie.

The film also stars Malcolm Xavier, Freya Lund, Matt Maretz, Natalie Pavelek and Kourtney Kelly.

And yes, it is a – ahem – “killer.”

The film, which took nine days to shoot, follows a mischievous bunch of former college chums and two new roommates when they visit a Christmas tree lot to find the perfect tree. The lot neighbors a spooky abandoned hotel. When they realize that they stayed way past the closing hours of the lot, the gang, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, decides to explore the creepiness of said hotel as one of their daring games.

Kelly’s character Bella automatically and throughout counts it as a bad idea but reluctantly joins them. After much built up suspension, they discover that they are not alone in the hotel when a crazed man in a Santa Claus mask starts killing them off one by one with a machete. The friends then find themselves on a race for their

lives to escape the numerous filthy and graffiti-adorned rooms and hallways of the hotel in order to survive against their masked adversary.

The Shakers’ own trip to a Christmas tree farm run by Benedictine monks on Thanksgiving weekend 2016 inspired the “Killer Santa” antagonist. Finding the idea of a hidden, masked murderous monk a good unforeseen villain and inspired by the random clown sightings of 2016, they eventually looked into Christmas clown masks and found the Santa clown mask online. This led to the rest of the character’s development.

The eeriness of the lighting, unique shots, and music, which is sinister sounding Christmas carols sung by children, together create the horrifying atmosphere of “Killer Christmas.” However, the Adler Hotel, the film’s main setting, contributed its own unsettling aura without much manipulation on the crew’s part.

According to the brothers, finding such location was the most difficult aspect of the filmmaking process. The Adler Hotel of Sharon Springs, New York, was in business from the 1920s to the early 2000s when it went bankrupt and eventually fell into disrepair. Throughout recent years the vacant building has fallen victim to vandalism and the results of such can now be seen in the movie.

“Killer Christmas” follows the growing popular trend of Christmas horror hybrid films. Others in this category include “Krampus” (2015); “Black Christmas” (2006); and of course the much tamer children 90s classic, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993).

“That was very purposeful because we love Halloween and there hasn’t really been an epic Christmas one that’s been done,” says PeterPaul Shaker. “We really loved the concept of this Killer Santa type person. We thought that Christmas horror films are underrepresented. There needs to be more of them. It’s a good, fun season. When you think of horror you’re thinking Halloween, you’re thinking something a little darker. With Christmas you think of fun, family friendly. It’s a nice little twist; something unexpected. It just hasn’t been done enough.”

6 Tips To Prepare Your Lawn For Winter

s days get shorter and temperatures drop, many homeowners overlook their lawns’ needs.

Unfortunately, winter can be brutal and make it hard for lawns, trees and shrubs to thrive the following spring.

Just like chapped lips and dry skin, plants struggle to find moisture in the winter, too. Symptoms include scorched and dropped leaves, mottling on leaves and even dead leaves and twigs. Dry or frozen soil can prevent plants from replenishing needed water, which can result in winter burn. In addition, when temperatures drop below a plant’s natural tolerance, it can impact their health and vigor and cause them to decline prematurely.

“Many homeowners may not realize that late fall is a good time to help prepare your lawn and landscape for a healthy spring growth,” said Ben Hamza, director of technical services for TruGreen.

“Homeowners should remember to perform common maintenance practices on their lawns and landscapes, such as late fall fertilization on lawns and trees and shrubs, and continue to water during dry periods. Taking the extra time in the fall can pay dividends in the spring.

To help prepare your lawn for the winter months, perform the following practices: 1. Clear leaves. It’s important to remove leaves or mulch them with a properly equipped mower as they can

suffocate grass. Matted leaves left over a lawn throughout the winter months can delay spring green-up. After clearing leaves, homeowners can compost what was collected to nourish plants and shrubs, reducing the impact on the landfill.

2. Replace unhealthy patches. Fall’s favorable weather conditions, as well as moist and warm soil temperatures, create the ideal opportunity for successful seeding of bare lawn areas and overseeding of healthy grass to improve your lawn thickness and density.

3. Trim. Trees and shrubs are also vulnerable to winter weather and should be properly groomed and fertilized to avoid winter injury.

4. Give a good fall feeding.

The roots of lawns, trees and shrubs need energy to prepare for a healthy, green spring revival. Keep fertilizer on target to prevent run-off and sweep fertilizer granules that may reach pavement back onto your lawn.

5. Give sprinklers a break.

In most parts of the country, failing to winterize your sprinkler system can result in major problems that can also lead to costly repairs, such as cracked pipes, broken valves or damage to the lawn itself. Follow your owners’ manual instructions to safely put your system to rest. Be sure to blow out underground systems to eliminate any remaining water that may freeze and expand.

uring winter, many people plan vacations to warmer climates so they can enjoy a relaxing respite from the snow and ice.

While travelers are enjoying the sand and surf, their homes may be in danger from extreme weather conditions.

According to the State Farm Insurance Company, frozen water pipes affect a quarter-million families each winter. Both copper and plastic pipes can freeze. State Farm notes that a single 1⁄8-inch crack in a pipe can result in up to 250 gallons of water leakage per day. Flood water can contribute to serious structural damage, mold and a host of other problems.

Water expands as it freezes, so pipes can be put under strain if the pressure from expanding water has nowhere to go, offers the American Red Cross. Pipes that tend to freeze most frequently include those exposed to severe cold, such as outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool lines and water sprinkler systems. However, even pipes inside a home, such as those in unheated areas or those that run against exterior walls, can freeze.

To avoid returning from a relaxing winter escape to find a home in need of repair thanks to frozen pipes, homeowners can take these steps.

• Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces to help maintain higher temperatures within the areas where some water pipes may run.

Prevent Frozen Pipes While Traveling • Pipes themselves can be insulated with special coverings or sleeves. Homeowners also can explore heat tape or wrap pipes in heat cables controlled by their thermostats.

• Disconnect outdoor hoses, and drain water from pipes leading to outdoor faucets.

Turn off the indoor valve to shut off the water supply to the outdoors, but leave the outdoor bib in the “open” position to allow water to drip and relieve pressure should some freezing occur.

• The same technique can be applied indoors. A trickle of hot and cold water can keep pipes from freezing during extremely cold snaps of weather.

• Set the thermostat to a consistent temperature, ensuring that the temperature indoors will not drop dramatically overnight. The temperature should be no less than 55 F. • Open cabinet doors to allow heat to reach under sinks and appliances.

• Check around the house for drafty areas that can contribute to colder temperatures in garages, basements and crawl spaces.

• Consider relocating pipes that are exposed to the elements to provide increased protection.

• Ask a neighbor to periodically check on the house to ensure that pipes are in good working order.

he road to great credit begins with consumers.

Consumers who demonstrate an ability to pay bills on time and stay out of debt can make themselves more attractive to prospective creditors, which can ultimately save them thousands of dollars when they purchase homes and/or vehicles.

While strong credit scores take years to build, men and women looking to improve their scores can begin doing so rather quickly. Scores will not skyrocket overnight, but they will begin to improve if consumers begin taking the following steps.

• Pay bills on time. Paying bills on time is one of the most effective and simplest ways for consumers to improve their credit scores. One of the credit scores lenders use to determine if they will extend credit

to a given applicant is the FICO® score, which is generated by the Fair Isaac Corporation. According to the Fair Isaac Corp., a FICO score is broken down into five categories, some of which factor more heavily than others. An individual’s payment history accounts for 35 percent of his or her FICO score, making it the most influential of the five factors for people who have been using credit for a long time. (Note: People with a nonexistent or greatly limited credit history may have their FICO scores more influenced by other factors.) If necessary, set up automatic payments so all bills, but especially bills owed to creditors, such as credit card companies and student loan lenders, are paid on time.

Replace air filters. Older, dirty air filters can circulate dust, pollen and other particles throughout your home. They can also cause your air conditioner and heater to run less efficiently, which can result in higher energy consumption.

Rather than pushing potentially harmful dust particles into your house and causing your systems to work overtime, in-

spect your air filter often and change it regularly. You might also want to consider installing a whole-home air purifier or placing portable air purifiers in frequently used rooms.

Reduce energy and natural resource usage. Try installing timers on your lights so they turn on only at specified times.

To take it a step further, consider installing lighting with vacancy sensors that automatically shut off the lights when a room isn’t being used. Choose energy-efficient appliances, low-flow toilets and consider adding a rain barrel outside to collect rainwater, which can be used for chores such as watering plants, irrigating the lawn or washing your car.

Although it may not be practical to implement all of these ideas at once, little by little you can make small changes that add up to a big difference.

onthly mortgage payments are the biggest single expense for many homeowners. So it’s understandable why plenty of homeowners would love to trim those costs.

A host of factors determine how much homeowners pay for their mortgages each month. The cost of the home, the amount of the initial down payment and property taxes, which are often folded into monthly payments, will factor heavily into the cost of home

Simple Ways To Cut Mortgage Costs ownership. While homeowners may feel as though there’s little wiggle room to cut the costs of their mortgages, there are several ways to do just that and potentially trim years from the life of a home loan.

• Make bi-weekly payments.

• Study your credit report.

reflect their credit worthiness should examine their reports, which are available to all consumers once a year for free, for mistakes. Report any mistakes to Equifax, Experian and/or TransUnion.

• Wait to apply for new lines of credit or mortgages. Consumers’ credit scores take a small hit each time they apply for new lines of credit, whether it’s a credit card or mortgage.

Consumers who want to quickly improve their scores should refrain from applying for new lines of credit until they have increased their scores to a point where they won’t mind seeing those scores take a small dip.

Consumers’ credit scores can affect their lives in various ways. While it takes time to build strong credit histories, consumers can take small steps to begin improving their credit scores right away.
