Welcome to Mount Victoria

M

ount Victoria is also known as Natmataung (Nat ma Taung) is one of the ultra-prominent peaks of Southeast Asia. It is part of the Chin Hills range and locally called as Khonuamthung in Chin Language which is used by Chin people. With a height of 3,053 metres (10,016 ft) above sea level, Mount Victoria lies in the Chin Hills-Arakan Yoma montane forests ecoregion.

Surrounded at lower elevations by tropical and subtropical moist forests, Nat Ma Taung’s higher elevations form a sky island, home to many temperate and alpine species typical of the Himalaya further north, as well as many endemic species. Mount Victoria with the core area if 446-square kilometer situates in the Southern Chin hills is the southern out post of Himalayas, of a volcanic origin.

The mountain is now protected within Nat Ma Taung National Park established in 1994. It became one of the Association for Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Heritage Parks.

Nat Ma Taung National Park preserve rare species of Myanmar Orchids. 159 bird species reptiles and butterfly are also present as its hidden beauty lies in the ultra-prominent peaks of Southeast Asia. Exploring her secret beauty in Chin State is an amazing adventure which will last longer in one’s lifetime memory, because if not only the mountain but also observing the traditional and cultural heritage if Chin people and their living systems around her.

driving.Kanpetlet will offers beautiful mountain scenery and great trekking opportunies, including walks in the Nat Ma Taung National Park, the chance to climb the 3,053 metre high Mount Victoria and a great exploring her hidden beauty. Due to tha altitude, temperatures Kanpetlet are relatively cool all year round, and from October to February temperatures can drop close to freezing during the night.

She, Mount Victoria, will attract everyone as soon as one steps on

The area around Kanpetlet is home to many tribes, including the Dai, Muun, Upu, Ya and Ngagah. It is common for their womenfolk to sport tattooed faces,

her ground which is full of interesting characteristic as above mentioned. She is waiting for every adventurous visitors by 100 miles away from Bagan which is one of most famous ancient city of Myanmar. Leaving Bagan, across Ayeyarwaddy River over bridge and arrival in Kanpatlet which is an old British settlement town situates 4560 ft above sea would be interesting tour, and it would take you about 7 hours

with each tribe have its own distinct pattern. These are long-established traditions, the origins of which are somewhat lost in the mists of time, but the reasons seem to be protective: either as an attempt to hide the tribal women’s beauty so they would not be kidnapped by Burmese kings, or to prevent kidnapping between tribes. Whatever the reasoning, this practice is symptomatic of the mixing

of Christianity and animist traditions in Chin State; many locals identify themselves as Christian and attend church every Sunday, and yet hold to many of their ancient rituals. Trekking to Mount Victoria, a wellknown summit in Chin State (province) of Myanmar, is gaining favor among eco tourists. Myanmar is the ecotourism’s delight, too. There are still many pockets of natural beauty with rare flora and fauna where very few have set foot on. She, Mount Victoria in Chin State, is like a jewel in the crown in this respect.

The 10.200 feet Mount Victoria in Chin State is snow free the year round although weather can freeze over in the depths of the cold season. Moreover, the mountain is not rocky enough, so climbing it is just ordinary mountain climbing. A person with moderate health and stamina can tackle it. Then an added attraction is it is the only high mountain close to the plains.

The increasingly appreciated Mount Victoria is force to be reckoned with Eco-tourism. Apart from vigorous trekking, its flora and fauna hold a great attraction for foreign tourists. Many species and subspecies exist, some peculiar to this region alone. Mount Victoria is great for bird-watching and observing butterflies. Those interested in anthropology can study the Chins’ culture to their satisfaction. Then Mount Victoria is considered to be an extinct volcano, of a very rare kind. Due to its unique geographical position, Myanmar is home to more

than a thousand species of birds. It has the distinction of being the only home of four species, of which the white-browed nuthatch (Sitta Victoria) is one. Only a few specialists have seen this bird. 10 to 17 birds of this species were observed, mostly paired, on Mount Victoria recently.

About People On the Chin National Day (February 20th) some people hold a traditional ceremony and dedicate a cattle for their God but the animism festivals are hardly seen today. Yet there still lives several shamans in southern Chin, one of which is said to be as old as more than 100 years old. Loin cloths in the wormer months and draped blankets over themselves when the weather turned cool. The women wore poncho like garments woven with intricate geometric patterns. The most extra ordinary chin fashion of old was the custom of tattooing the women’s faces. Chin facial tattoos cover the whole face starting at just above the bridge of the nose and radiating out in a pattern of dark lines that resemble a spider’s web. Even the eyelids were tattooed. The tattooing was traditionally done to girls once they

reached about 10 or 12 years old. Today it is not common to see the female Chins with tattoos on their faces in north and central Chin state, but Mindat and other south Chin villages still maintain this tradition. Especially young women of the Munn tribe in Mt. Victoria region are keen or very low to do this customs. Munn, Makan, Daai, Yin Du, Nga Ya and Chin Pon tribes each has different tattoo design. Munn’s tattoo is a line of small circles along the neck, straight lines making half moon shape for the cheeks. Dine put a lot of dots all over the face. Another tribes of Chin group in Arakan state uses a spider-net pattern tattoos which are not found around Mindat. Dine females are also said that they used to be slaves and its evidence was a ring shaped tattoo around the ankles which they still have today.

Welcome to Ancient City / Bagan

B

agan is an ancient city located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Pagan, the first kingdom to unify the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. During the kingdom’s height between the 11th and 13th centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2200 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day. The Bagan Archaeological Zone is a main draw for the country’s nascent tourism industry. It is seen by many as equal in attraction to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. According to the Burmese chronicles, Bagan was founded in the second century CE, and fortified in 849 CE by King Pyinbya, 34th successor of the founder of early Bagan. Mainstream scholarship however holds that Bagan was founded in the mid-to-late 9th century by the Mranma (Burmans), who had recently entered the Irrawaddy valley from the Nanzhao Kingdom. It was among several competing Pyu city-states until the late 10th century when the Burman settlement grew in authority and grandeur.

From 1044 to 1287, Bagan was the capital as well as the political, economic and cultural nerve center of the Pagan Empire. Over the course of 250 years, Bagan’s rulers and their wealthy subjects constructed over 10,000 religious monuments (approximately 1000 stupas, 10,000 small temples and 3000 monasteries) in an area of 104 square kilometres (40 sq mi) in the Bagan plains. The prosperous city grew in size and grandeur, and became a cosmopolitan center for religious and secular studies, specializing in Pali scholarship in grammar and philosophicalpsychological (abhidhamma) studies as well as works in a variety of languages on prosody, phonology, grammar, astrology, alchemy, medicine, and legal studies. The city attracted monks and students from as far as India, Ceylon as well as the Khmer Empire.

The culture of Bagan was dominated by religion. The religion of Bagan was fluid, syncretic and by later standards, unorthodox. It was largely a continuation of religious trends in the Pyu era where Theravada Buddhism co-existed with Mahayana Buddhism, Tantric Buddhism, various Hindu (Saivite, and Vaishana) schools as well as native animist (nat) traditions. While the royal patronage of Theravada Buddhism since the mid-11th century had enabled the Buddhist school to gradually gain primacy, other traditions continued to thrive throughout the Pagan period to degrees later unseen. The Pagan Empire collapsed in 1287 due to repeated Mongol invasions (1277– 1301). Recent research shows that Mongol armies may not have reached

Bagan itself, and that even if they did, the damage they inflicted was probably minimal. However, the damage had already been done. The city, once home to some 50,000 to 200,000 people, had been reduced to a small town, never to regain its preeminence. The city formally ceased to be the capital of Burma in December 1297 when the Myinsaing Kingdom became the new power in Upper Burma.

between the 15th and 20th centuries. The old capital remained a pilgrimage destination but pilgrimage was focused only on “a score or so” most prominent temples out of the thousands such as the Ananda, the Shwezigon, the Sulamani, the Htilominlo, the Dhammayazika, and a few other temples along an ancient road. The rest—thousands of less famous, outof-the-way temples—fell into disrepair, and most did not survive the test of time.

Bagan survived into the 15th century as a human settlement, and as a pilgrimage destination throughout the imperial period. A smaller number of “new and impressive” religious monuments still went up to the mid-15th century but afterward, new temple constructions slowed to a trickle with fewer than 200 temples built

For the few dozen temples that were regularly patronized, the continued patronage meant regular upkeep as well as architectural additions donated by the devotees. Many temples were repainted with new frescoes on top of their original Pagan era ones, or fitted with new Buddha statutes. Then came a series of

BAGAN Carving

state-sponsored “systematic” renovations in the Konbaung period (1752–1885), which by and large were not true to the original designs—some finished with “a rude plastered surface, scratched without taste, art or result”. The interiors of some temples were also whitewashed, such as the Thatbyinnyu and the Ananda. Many painted inscriptions and even murals were added in this period.

Bagan’s Special Lacquerware The lacquer takes its roots in China it there has a few three thousand years, and then developed in all the Southeast Asia. In Myanmar the tree which one takes the resin is it Thit-si. These trees push naturally in whole forests almost in all

Myanmar in light altitude. One takes the resin, a little like one does it with latex, by notches at the base of the trunk on which one fixes small bowls in bamboo. The sap of the lacquer tree has a very strong adhesive quality and a splendid brilliance. It has many qualities as to make impermeable the objects which it covers. It adheres on many surfaces, bamboo, woods, sheets of palm tree, metal and leather. It resists the insects and guards on all occasions its flexibility. Glazed Plaques Using Chinese sources, a story is made current that it was Pyu who started the making of glazed work in about AD 800. They traded glazed ware and earthen jars with neighbouring people. Excavations at Maing Maw, Vishnu Old Town, Sriksetra and Hanlin produced nothing like ceramic. As the archaeological excavations in these Pyu sites are still in the beginning, we might have the good

fortune to get some evidence supporting the fact that Pyu did have ceramic of some good quality. Mural Painting The significant character of Bagan mural painting of Myanmar tradition is a single line basis. Such painting, named as oriental workmanship does not copy, but clearly expresses the motional picture in specific style with delicacy, vibrancy, grace, beauty and lifelike action by stable single line paintings. Such paintings were drawn in detail and were more expressive. The achievement of King Anawrahta (1044 to 1077 A.D.) to promote Theravada Buddhism to prosper and flourish and various handicrafts has resulted in the mural paintings, found in pagodas, ordination halls and monasteries. The Bagan stone inscriptions have recorded the building of pagodas, the inner walls, boasting their fine and graceful paintings, and scale of wages, paid to artists. The inner walls of the Bagan pagodas, ordination halls and bricks monasteries were painted on the line which covers the single or double layers of plasters of the wall. The mixture of red earth with plaster was easy to decay. Mostly white, black, yellow and red colours were used in early paintings. Later, blue and green colours were added. Ochre colour, yellow colour, ochre and straw (strong and pale) were common. The gum was also blended for fast colours and animal bile for polishing. The formula of colour processing is said to use chalk for white, black from

crude oil and soot, yellow from the yellow ochre, blue from indigo, red from vermilion and red ochre, green from vitriol etc. Besides Bagan stone inscriptions mention the purchases of colouring materials such as orpiment, realgar, etc. for use in painting. Most of ancient Myanmar paintings were found in the vicinity of Bagan, where pagodas, monasteries, ordination halls are situated much more than in other regions in Myanmar. The later devout donors were fortunate enough to appreciate Bagan paintings because of the fervor and profound faith of the several monarchs of Inwa and Konbaung Dynasties who came to Bagan and donated their religious merits though the Bagan Capital has perished. Dirt, decay, damage and smoke prevailed some of the aging Bagan painting, about one thousand years old, resulting in pale colour. Due to gilding and lime washing by generous donors, some had lost their original significance. Though some paintings, salient art work, created by immense imagination and skills have been decayed. Most Bagan paintings still survive for study and research. Bagan Stucco tucco is a material made of an aggregate, a binder, and water which is applied wet, and hardens when it dries. Also used in sidings, it is used as a coating for walls and ceilings and for decoration. Stucco may be used to cover less visually appealing construction materials such as concrete blocks, steel, or adobe.

Inle Lake

The Biggest Lake In Myanmar

Inle Lake is a freshwater lake located in the Nyaungshwe Township of Taunggyi District of Shan State, part of Shan Hills in Myanmar. It is the second largest lake in Myanmar with an estimated surface area of 44.9 square miles (116 km2), and one of the highest at an elevation of 2,900 feet (880 m). During the dry season, the average water depth is 7 feet (2.1 m), with the deepest point being 12 feet (3.7 m), but during the rainy season this can increase by 5 feet (1.5 m). The watershed area for the lake lies to a large extent to the north and west of the lake. The lake drains through the Nam Pilu or Balu Chaung on its southern end. There is a hot spring on its northwestern shore. Although the lake is not large, it contains a number of endemic species. Over twenty species of snails and nine species of fish are found nowhere else in the world. Some of these, like the silver-blue scaleless Sawbwa barb, the crossbanded dwarf danio, and the Lake Inle danio, are of minor commercial importance for the aquarium trade. It hosts approximately 20,000 brown and black head migratory seagulls in November, December and January.

The people of Inle Lake (called Intha), some 70,000 of them, live in four cities bordering the lake, in numerous small villages along the lake’s shores, and on the lake itself. The entire lake area is in Nyaung Shwe township. The population consists predominantly of Intha, with a mix of other Shan, Taungyo, Pa-O (Taungthu), Danu, Kayah, Danaw and Bamar ethnicities. Most are devout Buddhists, and live in simple houses of wood and woven bamboo on stilts; they are largely self-sufficient farmers. Most transportation on the lake is traditionally by small boats, or by somewhat larger boats fitted with single cylinder inboard diesel engines. Local fishermen are known for practicing a distinctive rowing style which involves standing at the stern on one leg and wrapping the other leg around the oar. This unique style evolved for the reason that the lake is covered by reeds and floating plants making it difficult to see above them while sitting. Standing provides the rower with a view beyond the reeds. However, the leg rowing style is only

practiced by the men. Women row in the customary style, using the oar with their hands, sitting cross legged at the stern. Fish caught from the lake - the most abundant kind is called nga hpein (Inle Carp, Cyprinus intha) - are a staple of the local diet. A popular local dish is htamin gyin - ‘fermented’ rice kneaded with fish and/or potato - served with hnapyan gyaw (literally twice fried Shan tofu). In addition to fishing, locals grow vegetables and fruit in large gardens that float on the surface of the lake. The floating garden beds are formed by extensive manual labor. The

farmers gather up lake-bottom weeds from the deeper parts of the lake, bring them back in boats and make them into floating beds in their garden areas, anchored by bamboo poles. These gardens rise and fall with changes in the water level, and so are resistant to

flooding. The constant availability of nutrient-laden water results in these gardens being incredibly fertile. Rice cultivation is also significant.Hand-made goods for local use and trading are another source of commerce. Typical products include tools, carvings and other ornamental objects, textiles, and cheroots. A local market serves most common shopping needs and is held daily but the location of the event rotates through five different sites around the lake area, thus each of them hosting an itinerant market every fifth day. When held on the lake itself, trading is conducted from small boats. This ‘floating-market’ event tends to emphasize tourist trade much more than the other four.

The Inle lake area is renowned for its weaving industry. The Shanbags, used daily by many Burmese as a tote-bag, are produced in large quantities here. Silk-weaving is another very important industry, producing high-quality handwoven silk fabrics of distinctive design called Inle longyi. A unique fabric from the lotus plant fibers is produced only at Inle lake and is used for weaving special robes for Buddha images called kya thingahn (lotus robe). A wonderful watery world of floating gardens, stilted villages and crumbling stupas, Inle Lake is an absolute must. Mountains tumble down towards the lakeshore, blurring the distinction between heaven and earth. For many travellers, Inle is heaven on earth, a place to while away the days canoeing, cycling and walking through the lush countryside. The Intha people are famous for their leg rowing, although these days many just turn it on for the tourists. There is even a monastery where meditating monks have taught the cats to jump – that’s enlightenment for you. Inle deserves to be savoured, not rushed, and many travellers end up staying for longer than they expected.

Amazing Lake
