Mindful Desgns is sought after for high-end projects that combine design, environmental harmony and cutting-edge sustainable and energy efficiency.

verything about this home from Mindful Custom Builders nestled in the trees along Whitefish Lake speaks to a quintessential luxury indoor/outdoor living experience. An especially challenging but striking building site slopes down through trees to the lakeshore. It brought together the full expertise of the designer and builder with the owner’s vision to create a timeless lake home. To make the most of the elevations and shape of the site, this 4,200square foot, four bedrooms, 4 ½ bath home is entered from the upper level, welcoming with a view from above into the main living area below. Mindful Custom Builders, a firm started by three college friends, two with degrees in environmental studies and one in business administration, has grown into a dynamic Whitefish building company. Mindful Custom Builders is sought after for high-end projects that combine design, environmental harmony and cutting-edge sustainable and energy efficiency achieved with high-performance heating and cooling company, Affordable Heating. This project on Whitefish Lake is a perfect example of how their expertise, along with their chosen designer, Timberforge Design, creates a home of everlasting quality. seamlessly toward dramatic folding doors from Sierra Pacific Windows that open out to the patio, and waterfront beyond. The match between Mindful Custom Builders and the owners from Calgary was a good fit. The owner’s priorities on the home blending with the environment and having the highest energy efficiency are some of Mindful Custom Builders’ special areas of expertise. The urban Calgary family wanted their summer home to exhibit modern and mountain design, and have a highquality yet subtle presence within the community of other homes along the lake. The home was designed to fit into the elevations, stepping down gradually from the higher level entrance and attached garage, to the main living area, and finally flowing into the lowest level where the living patio space divides into several pockets, screened patios, an outdoor kitchen and multiple fireplaces. “They wanted their main living space to feel like they were right on the lake. Even their view line is at lake level, rather that up higher,” Kevin Richardson, owner of Timberforge Design, said. The master bedroom is also downstairs, and the barstyle kitchen is created as an entertainment space, with a butler’s pantry off to the side that includes a prep sink, cabinets, storage and warming drawers. The mountain/modern elements immediately welcome residents and guests with the custom designed front door created by Jeff Gilman of Gilman Woodworking. Carefully handcrafted, the door incorporates walnut panels with powder-coated steel straps in horizontal lines. Three levels of depth between the wood and metal straps emphasize the harmony with the natural environment that are further carried through in the use of natural rock, wood and steel siding on shed roofs. The front door is the first of many surprising architectural gems throughout the home. Black basalt seeded aggregate concrete on the patio is another dramatic detail that blends the feel of elegance with a natural sensibility. Metal roof panels from Glacier Steel also add a simple yet unique element to the exterior. Inside, the kitchen and baths carry through the mix of modern and elegant design with carbon quartz countertops, and steel grey granite in the barbecue area, all from Glacier Marble and Granite. Alpine Lighting, in Kalispell, created a lighting design for the owners that follows the mountain modern theme throughout the home with specially selected light fixtures and a custom-made chandelier from a Vermont company that specializes in forged steel detail. “They wanted clean lines with a contemporary yet Montana feel,” says Stacey Riggs, owner of Alpine Lighting. While striking in every aspect, the home has a surprisingly subtle profile as seen from the lake, which is exactly what the owners hoped for. • 8 MONTANA’S FINEST HOMES 2015

Focused aesthetic A small footprint gives this home a big impression

A dramatic view of the Swan Mountain range is striking in this home from Mindful Custom Builders.

ising out of a wide open field below Columbia Mountain in the Flathead Valley, this home epitomizes the definition of “timeless.” Whitefish builder Mindful Custom Builders built this angular home to perfectly complement its landscape while meeting the desire of the owners to make it flow with their young family’s lifestyle. A couple with two young children, the owners wanted to emphasize the main living areas, including the great room, kitchen and dining area, while minimizing wings on either side for bedrooms and laundry. The siding on the home is made from recycled barn wood with a corrugated metal lower paneling from Glacier Steel, giving it an appearance of having been on the prairie for a century, yet speaking to modern lines. Entering the home the dramatic view of the Swan Mountain range is immediately striking. Mindful Designs wanted to maximize the possibilities with the landscape, and so they created a great room window, in cooperation with Shepherd Glass, that is shaped to follow the line and slope of the mountain range, going beyond the conventional framing of a view. >

The owners liked the substantial feel of exposed beams, so there is an array of distressed structural beams that play strongly into the overall aesthetic. A loft near the children’s wing makes an ideal play area, complete with a wooden ladder that adds a sense of a private hideaway for the kids. The kitchen and dining room flow together, completing the view of the mountain range with another section of window that gently follows the range’s slope. A sophisticated feel picks up in the kitchen with an elegant, clean blend of silver metallic appliances, grey cabinets with complementary engineered quartz countertops. The patio spills out from the great room, and allows for the full experience of the open prairie and proximity of the mountain’s grandeur. Always a priority for Mindful Custom Builders, the home is built tight and ventilated right, with a high level of energy efficiency to comfortably and economically withstand the wind and cold of Montana winters, and exposure to long, hot days in late summer. “We use simple and elegant designs that allow for tight homes without excess cost,” says Dave Radatti, one of Mindful Custom Builders’ three owners. “We build homes that are healthy, efficient, and that will stand the test of time.” •

Classic KITCHENS Great designs for the most popular room in the home

ixing classic Montana style with a clean, upscale look is a trademark of North Country Builders. This kitchen blends classic Montana style with a clean, upscale look with substantial wood beams and bright whitewashed cabinets and countertops. The cabinets, built by the Cabinet Connection in Kalispell, open up the kitchen into a light and airy feel. The white tile on the backsplash and see-through glass upper cabinets catch the light from the big kitchen window and bring in a sense of openness and an inviting working environment for any cook. The home was designed by Doug Rhodes of Sunworks Design in Whitefish. He brought the owner’s vision of blending Montana style details with an upscale feel to life throughout the home. The kitchen carries this blended style through, with just the right amount of room to create a space where guests and family can feel welcome and look out on the beautiful landscape or sit at the bar while not impeding room for those preparing food. Small details, like book-

The rich dark wood framing the window on one side compliment and emphasize the clean, white distressed cabinets surrounding the cooking area. Dramatic wood beams on the ceiling are softened by suede tones on the walls. The owners wanted a casual, functional kitchen with plenty of space for family and friends. A second sink on the middle island makes washing and preparing food flow easily to and from the double ovens, while the sink at the window allows guests to mix in the kitchen and prepare a drink. The whole space feels alive with detail and color, achieved subtlely through diamond shapes on the cabinets, iridescent cross hatch blue glass for the backsplashes and decorative arched valances over the ovens and window. A beautiful multi-toned wood floor, and delicate silver leaf branched chandelier with gold leaf accent over the island, created as a custom art piece, adds further interest and character to this lovely kitchen. •

THIS LAKE RETREAT was designed to be a comfortable home for an active family of five, while also accommodating many guests, and entertaining gatherings up to 100. To accomplish this Bain & Company created a home that included themed guest rooms, a spacious kitchen and dining area, another complete kitchen and entertaining space outside, and additional cabins, all with a focus on the lake. The main house is 5166 square feet of rustic elegance with spectacular lake views. Theme guest rooms include the “Tuscan room” with a private patio featuring an herb garden, the “Spa room” with a private hot tub patio, and the “Hawaiian room”. The main kitchen and dining area incorporates about 480 square feet of floor space and a total of 125 square feet of granite and antique patina concrete countertop to allow for multiple and ample workspace that would delight any chef. A casual, yet refined feel is created with bench seats at the dining table and kitchen details like a farm style hammered copper bar sink, a five burner gas range, a walk in food pantry and a large French door refrigerator. In addition, this custom kitchen includes a coffee bar with an espresso machine, a wine bar with a wine cooler, a bake center with a fold-away mixer and a glass front beverage refrigerator. The outdoor kitchen allows those preparing food to be a part of family and friend’s activities on the lake. Generous granite countertops, a spacious

granite island prep bar, a large DCS BBQ grille, a corner sink, ice maker and large refrigerator make this second kitchen completely equipped to prepare large meals while enjoying the outdoor fun. The cabinet boxes in this outdoor living space have scrubplaned, antique glazed cherry doors with a marine finish to protect them from the elements. Inside, the main house keeps the family’s young girls, their friends and cousins in style with an adorable bunk room that sleeps eight. Themed after the Flathead cherries, it has a kitchen alcove equipped as a play house, a curtained reading nook and a flat screen TV. Downstairs, a separate children’s craft room, filled with craft supplies, is finished with a special wall board to display works of art. Other special use rooms include a workout room with unparalleled views of the lake and the client’s home office. The guest cabins are as M O N TA N A L I V I N G . C O M

unique as the main house, each with a main sleeping area and separate bunk rooms for children. The broad scope, detail and imaginative design of this project won Greg Bain & Co. awards at the 2009 Flathead Valley Parade of Homes including “People’s Choice”, “Best Kitchen”, “Best Master Suite”, “Best Interior Décor”, and “Best of Class”. It is easy to see why Bain also won the prestigious National Best in American Living Awards, BALA, for the outdoor living space in this home. • 2015 MONTANA’S FINEST HOMES

Montana’s Finest Homes: GREG BAIN AND COMPANY

New Beginning Greg Bain and Company remodel breathes new life into home hen a couple from Houston found an older home on a hill overlooking Foys Lake in the Flathead Valley, they knew the location was spectacular and imagined the home just needed some remodeling. After meeting with Greg Bain & Company, their vision was enlightened. Greg Bain, owner of Greg Bain & Company, walked through the home and listened to the clients explain that this would be their final and ultimate home into their retirement. “I saw fantastic potential”, Bain says. Indeed, the layout and remodel that Bain brought to life with the owners became a custom home beyond all potential the clients ever imagined. Bain’s model for working with clients starts with personal time and attention that often includes walking through other homes he has built that gives clients new ideas and a feel for details they might want to incorporate into their project. He believes it makes all the difference to be able to physically see and feel materials, color schemes, and spaces to make decisions about what are the best directions for each unique

client’s taste. This is why the office at Greg Bain & Company has many examples of materials, photos of previous projects on the walls, and even samples of unique building methods he has created like faux distressed beams to give clients all the tools possible to make these important decisions. Bain has been building in the Flathead Valley for 40 years. Greg and his son Matt are a perfectly balanced combination of artistic designers, craftsman, general contractors, and keen businessmen with a passion for delivering the perfect home to their clients. They accomplish this by using exceptional organization and creativity while paying scrupulous attention to their client’s budget concerns. The home at Foys Lake was carefully planned to meet a multitude of lifestyle needs for the couple, which called for a complete demolition and remodeling of the inside of the home. New spaces were created including a library nook in the bedroom for reading before retiring, an ample kitchen and large dining area for entertaining, and a custom designed “adults” bunkroom downstairs with bunk beds large enough for groups of fishing buddies, or a lady’s ski weekend group. A wine grotto downstairs near the entertainment room allows for these groups to gather. The view from the great room sweeps down from the large descending lawn to the serenity of the lake, and then rolls beyond to a vision of the entire city of Kalispell and mountain ranges in the distance. Bain knew this view was a central gem of the home, and so created a dramatic double arch to frame that space, starting with an arch at the entrance, carried through the great room with complimenting exposed beams, and matched with the same arch around the great room window. While this effect underscores a sense of grandeur, every part of the home exudes a feel of warmth and comfort. The color scheme plays soft, creamy suede-look faux finished walls off of strong, substantial dark wood beams throughout. THE BEAMS are a solid-look distressed created structure, made from three sides and then carved and treated to look exactly like solid beams. This technique is one of Bain’s signature craftsmen inventions that allows for a more cost efficient way of having this detail more extensively throughout the home. In the kitchen, Bain collaborated with the owner and interior designer to create a luxurious space with a grey and bronze veined extra thick granite island from Brazil, which can be warmed with the touch of a switch. The owners and their guests can enjoy the warmth of the counter as they sit with their coffee, or meal. Other extraordinary details include the custom-made circle sawn dresser in the bunkroom that is built into the wall, inlays of dark wood above the ceiling fans, and a built-in bookshelf for the library nook. The master bed-

room shower is a work of art on its own, with three glass walls framed in Knotty Alder that have a view of the lake, and travertine tile walls with a granite inlay. One of the truly extraordinary aspects about the homes Greg and Matt Bain design and build, in addition to their beauty, is their organization and timing. This particular project was done start to finish in five months. The owner, who has been through the process of building many homes, says, “I would build a hundred homes with Greg Bain & Company.” M O N TA N A L I V I N G . C O M

They accomplish this by always keeping the owners apprised of everything, hiring the best subcontractors in the area, and doubling up on man power when needed. “The way we challenge the accepted protocol is by creatively designing one of a kind, beautiful heirloom homes, in a customer friendly way, and delivering a flawless product within an accelerated schedule,” explains Bain. “It is like conducting a symphony,” he says, “everyone comes in at exactly the right time, and everyone plays their part seamlessly.” • 2015 MONTANA’S FINEST HOMES

Montana’s Finest Homes: GREG BAIN AND COMPANY

Entering this home from Greg Bain and Co. you see breathtaking views of Flathead Lake and Mission Mountains.

On Eagles’ WINGS Nature inspires this Flathead Lake log home from Greg Bain and Company ecretly waiting discovery, the location for this Flathead Lake home was found after the owners spent months combing the lake’s shore for just the right site. The day they found this spot along the lake, that included 2.2 acres of shoreline, a bald eagle flew directly in and sealed the deal. They named their place “Eagles Cove” and soon the building was underway. They decided they wanted their home to be in harmony with its natural surroundings so Greg Bain created a log home design that would use northwest Montana logs, harvested from dry standing spruce and pines for its structure. Bain & Company cleared the land, designed the home, and quickly the laborious work of sanding and preparing the handpicked logs was in progress. The 5,580 square foot home was started in early fall and completed by the following spring. “As a builder I

take pride in being able to provide my clients with a highly customized home on a condensed schedule,” says Bain. Entering the home the breathtaking views of the lake and Mission Mountains immediately give the sense that one is floating on water. Much of the main level is devoted to the vaulted great room and a wide open living, dining and kitchen space including a breakfast nook. Bain’s design gave a nod toward the great turn of the century western log lodges, which includes a complete outdoor living space just off the great room. The screened-in outdoor kitchen is heated and has a large commercial barbecue, refrigerator and sink all housed in rustic cabinetry. The floor and perimeter bench are made of easy maintenance stamped and stained concrete. This kind of enclosure allows for use of this outdoor space all year round. >>

The interior logs are finished with a silky smooth surface, similar to a furniture finish that adds a sense of refinement. A large Tiffany lamp over the dining table adds a golden glow that enhances the warm tones of the logs. The open kitchen and dining area are designed to make the large fire place and expansive wrap around window views an integral part of both spaces. A 1,249-square foot veranda wraps around the lake side of the home with grand rock and beam columns and comfortable Adirondack rocking chairs reminiscent of a Glacier Park Lodge. Every part of the home is designed to bring an extraordinary feeling of being warmly held in both nature and refinement. The home is designed to accommodate many different kinds of family activities that include the waterfront property as well as entertain large numbers of guests. One of Bain’s forte’s is creating a home that can feel both grand and warm at the same time. This lake front home is a perfect example of the delicate balance Bain achieves when creating a home that can feel cozy when there are just two, and grand and spacious when the guests arrive. •

The trim and floors in this home from North Country Builders are all solid wood, which company Leo Keane says increases the house’s longevity and value. White cabinets in the kitchen with wainscot, and a seated bar bring out the breezy New England feel.

hen a Vermont retired couple was seeking a summer home to spend time in Northwest Montana, they wanted to keep it cozy and energy efficient, with a touch of New England. The home was close to downtown Whitefish to accommodate the couple’s desire to be able to walk a few blocks for morning coffee and mingle with the locals. They asked North Country Builders to create their special summer home after learning of their expertise in building energy efficient, high quality homes that range from grand to smaller scale, and staying within a given budget. Leo Keane, owner of North Country Builders, says, “We build the homes we’re asked to build. We know our job is to custom build the home to our client’s exact needs and budget, with a little room left over for those wish-list details we always strive to include.” Details in this home include a coat closet near the entry that looks like an antique armoire, built out of reclaimed barn wood by one of Keane’s employees. North Country likes to keep all the detailed craftsmen work in-house and has gathered a committed and talented crew that have been with him for years. The owners were set on certain qualities, like all real wood. The trim and floors are all solid wood, which Keane says increases the house’s longevity and value. White cabinets in the kitchen with wainscot, and a seated bar bring out the breezy New England feel. The house is kept energy efficient with a heat recovery ventilation system that creates a house filled with constantly cycled fresh air. The insulation is well above code, which keeps the energy bills lower, and gives the home extra protection in the winter months when the owners are away. “We use as much locally sourced wood as possible,” says Keane, who is always conscious of the impact of a project on the environment. The owner’s vision and decorating brought this home to life. This home will give this retired couple a place of beauty and comfort to retreat to and enjoy their grandchildren for the rest of their lives. •

ridge with beautiful views of the Whitefish Lake helped sculpture the design of this home, in the Whitefish Iron Horse golf course community. The owners are a retired couple who were looking for a great location to build a home that they could feel comfortable in while accommodating family and friends visits, with lots of choices for outdoor activities. “We enjoy all that the area has to offer in the way of recreation and pristine beauty, including the close proximity to Glacier Park,” says homeowner Susan Witt. “But what makes us feel so at home in Whitefish is the community of wonderful people who live here.” The Witts met with several of the areas most recommended builders and chose High Country Builders, owned by Walt Landi. “The final decision to hire him was based on great chemistry. He was so easy to work with and very creative,” says Susan Witt. The home’s site on the ridge allowed Landi to create a design that had great views from almost every room in the house. The windows in the great room span from just a few feet above the floor to the ceiling and capture a view of the lake that feels like standing on top of a mountain. The great beams framing these windows are finished tree trunks that retain their wide base as they meet rockwork that details window ledges and walls throughout the home. Other rooms in the house, including bedrooms, also have windows that span from the ceiling to floor level, bringing the outdoors inside at every opportunity. Energy star certified windows were used throughout the home. “With the substantial amount of glass used in this project,” says Landi, “It was imperative to use one of the industry’s best choices in terms of thermal performace.” Landi, who was a cattle rancher in a previous career, has a special love for the craftsmanship and unique design of the old homesteads that shows in his projects. He specializes in using reclaimed wood, and throughout the home rustic log timbers are used for ceiling beams, framing windows, along ceiling trims, and as fireplace mantles. The design was a collaboration

between Landi and owner John Witt. “This was our first log hybrid home,” says John. “We chose the natural materials of log, timber, and stone to work with because they blend into the home’s surroundings. By aslo using those materials on the interiors, we brought the surrounding natural environment indoors.” The roof system uses locally harvested northwest Montana lodge pole, spruce, fir and larch. One of the home’s great building challenges was building steel frames into the log structures. “The part I enjoy the most about working with natural, irregular shaped materials,” says Landi, “is implementing them in precision building. Because of the large spans of glass used in this great room, we had to build a steel moment frame that is hidden within the log structure. The steel frame allows the house to resist lateral loads arising from winds or earthquakes. It’s a real challenge to hide this steel within the logwork.” EVERY ROOM in the home has custom cabinetry or woodwork. Ole Netteberg, owner of Old World Cabinets in Whitefish, has been building custom cabinets for over 45 years. “There has never been a project that compares to this in terms of the amount of woodworking details and cabinetry under one roof,” says Netteberg. In addition to the kitchen, interior storage closets, and dressing rooms, Old World Cabinets created special detail woodwork like a concealed television cabinet in the great room, where wall space was taken up by windows and a fireplace, and custom woodwork on the elevator walls and ceiling. The unique wine bar, a collaboration between Netteberg and Susan Witt, was custom designed to feature a rustic combination of textures and materials. All the quality, custom detail and attention to harmony with the natural surroundings put into this home will not only bring great joy and comfort to the couple who put so much into its design, but also be an important part of the legacy that they leave to future generations. •

Montana’s Finest Homes: BRIDGEWATER INNOVATIVE BUILDERS

The property was once home to a 1920s-era dwelling that needed removal. Parts of the original structure were rich with beauty and texture, so the homeowners decided to showcase the dwelling's history by upcycling individual pieces.

Small Town Charm A delightful home brings warmth, comfort to Whitefish neighborhood his Whitefish home defines synergy and is the perfect blend of the homeowners' creative inspiration and the builder’s energy-efficient expertise. Mark Van Everen, owner of Bridgewater Innovation Builders, Inc. made sure that his clients, who are third-generation railroad enthusiasts, got exactly what they wanted from their custom hillside home that overlooks a future park, a railway system, Whitefish Lake and the stunning backdrop beauty of Whitefish Mountain Resort. The half-acre property was once home to a 1920s-era dwelling that needed removal. Parts of the original structure, however, were rich with beauty and texture, so the homeowners decided to showcase the dwelling's history by up-cycling individual pieces and transforming

them into the aesthetics of a new home. Along the interior entry wall, strips of planked wood, each chosen by the homeowner for its timeless beauty, patiently restored and soaked in a honey-glazed finish intertwine with one another to create a half-wall panel. Around the home's 3,400 square-foot perimeter, Van Everen built a high-gabled carport to shade the home's raised deck and entryway. Sturdy timber framing and unique jointed, Van Everen created the structure to hold a heavy snow load and punctuate the most important place on their horseshoe drive. The no maintenance, raised deck system sprawls along the home's exterior sides winding around this home, past a dramatic bay window and underneath a built-in patio cover holding custom-outside heating and cooling

Montana’s Finest Homes: BRIDGEWATER INNOVATIVE BUILDERS

To keep this home from Bridgewater Innovative Builders warm, homeowners rely on an energy-efficient water-based radiant floor heating system.

system designed by the homeowner. It is an ideal combination of beauty and performance. To keep this home warm, homeowners rely on an energy-efficient water-based radiant floor heating system that can be turned on and off in one room at a time, zones, or the complete house simultaneously. At its front door, the homeowners vision and the builder's skill create a simple and elegant craftsman-style motif that continues throughout the dwelling; antique latch handled-door knobs that are finished in brushed copper, installed about a foot above their standard setting have an old-fashioned lock positioned perfectly underneath. Interior doors, walls and cabinets showcase simplistic farm-style elements and mixed perfectly with classic modern lines. Porcelain tile with a wood-look finish creates an upscale feel with a herring bone design on the main floor. The inviting atmosphere of the great room opens up the beauty of the outside through a long-benched bay window seat and panoramic gabled window overlooking the lake and mountains. In the dining area an antique wood stove on a raised shelf, with a reclaimed wood siding backdrop adds warmth and character. The main kitchen's bold red and white cabinets encircled a wide area underneath a large skylight, creating ample space for guests to mix while food is prepared. .•
