hen Marty and Lindsay Mornhinweg were deciding where to build their future retirement home, the location was easy. “We had lived in many different places, but every summer we came to Montana and those were our very best memories,” says Lindsay. Those trips conjure up memories of simple pleasures that brought the family together with the joy of playing outdoors in a beautiful landscape, cell phones hardly used, and rope swings by the river until sunset at 10 p.m. When they found a serene hillside by the Clark Fork River, just minutes outside Missoula where Marty went to the University of Montana, they knew this was “it”. Their vision was for a home that could feel warm and welcoming for the two of them in their retirement years, but could also comfortably accommodate family gatherings with grandchildren in the future. The home that Edgell Building created for the Mornhinwegs accomplished their goals perfectly with a caring collaboration that created a lasting friendship and mutual admiration between home-owner and builder. The location overlooking a stretch of the Bitterroot River offered a soft slope down to the river, creating the opportunity for picture perfect views from the entire west side of the home. “We knew we wanted the back of the house to be all views,” says Lindsay. David Edgell, owner of Edgell Building, knew that the sloping landscape and river location demanded an expert with layout and design, and so he called upon his long-time colleague Mark Schonrock, owner of The Design Company. He knew that Schronrock would work through the special subtleties requiring attention to capture the Mornhinweg’s vision. Entering the home two facets that immediately catch the eye are the views of the landscape and river from the great room windows that make up the entire west wall, provided by Sierra Pacific Windows, and the striking supporting log beams, artfully assembled by Bitterroot Valley Log and Timber. The great room flows seamlessly into a dining area and kitchen, with a simple natural division between the two made by a striking flow-through stone fireplace. Using rock from Montana Rockworks, Keith Sisson Masonry carefully constructed the fireplace as a centerpiece for both areas. A complimentary wall of the same stone adds a subtle “castle” feel to the entry/great room area. Details like a fireplace mantel using a reclaimed oak beam accented with metal bridge washers from the old Bonner Dam, used instead of a traditional larger wood mantel are one of many ideas that Edgell personally found for the home.

The soft grey cabinets have a slight distress that matches the elegant granite from Alpine Granite Accents in Victor, Montana. Edgell was involved in every detail of the project and was always careful to notice when a slight shift in plans might make a big difference in the final outcome. Another suggestion he made was to use the multicolored flagstone used on the upper porch on the lower patio too, which was originally planned as plain concrete. “I knew it was the right thing,” Edgell says, describing how this shift really brought together the cohesiveness of the design. He also recommended that the rain gutters and drain pipes be upgraded to copper, which followed the integrity of the beauty

created by the natural stone and dramatic beam work on the outside of the house. He worked very closely with Lindsay, who headed up all the decisions, often communicating long distance with his own personal sketches, photos she found from design magazines, and myriad other visual, written, and verbal ways to establish a collaboration that they both describe as an extremely enjoyable creative experience. “She was an absolute delight to work with,” Edgell says. The kitchen was one of Lindsay’s favorite parts of the home to design, where she knew she wanted a French country feel. The soft grey cabinets have a slight distress that matches the elegant granite from Alpine Granite Accents in Victor, Montana. The

large kitchen island makes a bold contrast to the muted tones with black cabinets and invites family and guests to linger at a long seated area facing the river views, also carefully framed by the kitchen windows. Just off of the kitchen, the outdoor-living patio provides a full barbeque, counter and sink food prep area, a comfortable dining table with overhead patio heaters, and another sitting area around the back with a gas fire pit. Natural stones were brought in to create a stepdown walkway to the lower patio. Every detail of the home flows and blends with the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The muted grey and soft beige tones throughout the home soften and brighten the strong wood accents throughout, which include striking reclaimed hardwood floors from Superior Hardwoods. Walls with these softer tones have an almost suede feel, expertly created by Full Spectrum Painting Classic, elegant, and understated interior design was achieved with furniture and design collaboration from Madison Creek Furnishings in Missoula. When the home was complete, and Marty Mornhinweg came out for his first stay, Edgell waited patiently to hear from him about his reaction. When he finally called he said, “I’ve been walking around the house for four days looking for something I don’t like, and I can’t find it.” Edgell says “He couldn’t have given us a better compliment.”

NATURE AND NURTURE The Construction Group’s Swan Walkout home overlooking Flathead Lake appeals to both

By Charles S. Benton People come to the Flathead Valley for an experience that is inspired nature. The Construction Group Montana, LLC is helping dissolve the line that, so often, separates a home from the landscape upon which it is built. The Swan Walkout home is another superb example of The Construction Group Montana’s production of bringing nature into the spaces we nurture. A key to achieving this specific blending of spaces entails choosing and using the appropriate materials. The Swan Walkout, winner of the 2016 Flathead Valley Parade of Homes “Best Curb Appeal” award, brilliantly embraces this terra firma on its exterior with local, chief-cliff moss stone, handmade fir and larch timber trusses, naturally stained vertical fir and larch siding and exposed aggregate pathways. Perfectly situated against a backdrop of evergreens, mountain peaks and panoramic Flathead Lake views, the Swan emerges as a spectacular accessory to 12 MONTANA’S FINEST HOMES SUMMER/FALL 2017

nature’s show. The artfully designed one and a half story home sits atop a grassy knoll with massive boulders appearing to lift it to its foundation. A splash of exotic grasses, native trees and colorful shrubs highlight The Swan Walkout’s presence in its macrocosm. A stroll around the house reveals a magnificent outdoor living space, rivaled only by the setting from which it rises. A full walkout basement, complete with windows and glass doors, peeks out from underneath the exterior living room. An ideal sanctuary in Montana would be incomplete without a space to relax al fresco. The Construction Group Montana has delivered a spacious, covered patio/deck, complete with a railing system suitable to be used as a bar, counter or serving surface. The south facing break wall adds comfort, functionality, beauty and longevity, allowing the covered area to be enjoyed through more seasons. ural wood accents in the two master suites is an invitation to the outdoors to come inside. Warm, fir and larch wall and ceiling accents bring just the right amount of the landscape into the living scape. >>> The Construction Group Montana ensured that robust timbers and iron accents appear to raise the ten foot ceilings to an even higher height. The layout of these timbers draws subtle attention to the custom, shiplap-sided gas fireplace; perfect for cozy relaxing while watching the snow set on the mountains. High end, modern appliances conveniently appoint this sleek and practical galley kitchen. Open to the main living space, a granite topped island with seating houses a large, double basin sink, allowing function to compliment the social space. The Swan Walkout, built on a mountaintop in The Ridgeline Cabins community by The Construction Group Montana, stands above the rest.

Old Montana Building Co. built this home near Kalispell, using a modern design approach.

Montana Charm Old Montana Building Company builds a legacy family home By DAVID REESE/Montana’s Finest Homes he look of Montana architecture is changing, and Old Montana Building Company is helping usher in a new era of modern design in homes. Montana has always been where people bring their lifestyles, ideas and culture from around the country, and that’s happening in home design now, says Jon Krack, owner of Old Montana Building Co. in Whitefish. “We’re into this cleaner look now,” Krack said. “It’s reflected across the country, as people are bringing their tastes with them to Montana.” He’s seeing clients asking for less of the heavy wood and stone elements that have dominated Montana architecture for the last 20 years. The new wave is the “mountain modern” look, Krack said.

n fact, Old Montana Building Co. recently performed a major modern-design remodel on a home on Big Mountain in Whitefish that was heavily into rock and log. “It comes down to who is driving the design ideal and that’s the younger generation,” Krack said. “There’s a generational piece to this. They have different tastes.” Clean lines and modern materials are aspects of construction you see in New York lofts. Those design elements are showing up in Montana. “You can take that look a lot of different directions,” Krack said. Old Montana Building Co. has carved out a niche in the custom-design market with homes of unique appeal. “The big log look is not our bread and butter,” Krack said. “There are builders in this area that have done that look, and if people are looking for that, we’d probably refer them to someone who has done that. “We’ve developed a good little niche, and it’s important for us to stay there.” An example of their design approach is seen in a home that Old Montana Building Co. recently built near Kalispell for a family from the eastern United States. The home is 4,500 square feet on three levels, and is designed for a growing family, with a gym, media room, small bar, office, game room and three car garage. “It’s a nice mix of modern and rustic,” Krack said. Certain elements of the home, such as abundant reclaimed materials and modern design, were patterned after what Old Montana Building Co. executive Somer Treat had used for her Clean lines and modern materials are aspects of construcown home near Glacier National Park, where she built tion you see in New York lofts, and those concepts were a custom home that resembles brought to the design of this home near Kalispell, Mont., built by Old Montana Building Co. a Montana fire lookout.

“We had great clients who were open to fun things and were excited to do something different,” she said. “They pushed themselves and they were most excited to try something they never would have done.” Treat is part of the Old Montana Building Co. team who helps their clients create functional, design-driven homes in Montana. Many of their clients, she said, say they want a certain look “but don’t know how to achieve it. This home is a good example of

showing people you can build something really fun, and be excited to experiment a little bit. “The lighting, cabinetry, and details on the finish took the home to a different place than the typical Montana house.” The homeowners chose to use zebra wood, imported from Africa, for the cabinets, which were done by Alpine Cabinetry. The home has spectacular views of the Swan Mountain Range, but was a challenging design footprint, as it was placed on heavily rocky area. Originally the design team with Old Montana Building Co. and the homeowners were considering using a Formica product for the cabinets to produce a clean, modern look, but they came up with zebra wood. “When you’re open for it, you end up with something fabulous,” Treat said. “It’s a great feeling to know we did it right.” Treat said one of the highest compliments they received on the home was from the homeowner, who told her they have built a house where the owner’s children will have their graduation photos and wedding photos taken. “It’s great to see this family building their forever home, a legacy for their children.” •

GOLF COURSE LIVING

REMOTE Luxury

Lakefront luxury at the Wilderness Club By Therese Wood he Wilderness Club golf community in Eureka boasts over 400 lots that weave throughout forested acres among the golf

course. This featured home is near a small lake, called Wilderness Lake, where community members have access to canoes and kayaks for recreation. The homes in the Wilderness Club community are designed to have a comfortable feel, with natural elements like wood, stone and granite to reflect the timeless, natural feel of the wooded acres they

share. Both the outer treatments and inner finishes are subtle and made to blend with the natural environment. In the kitchen, Whispering Ridge Woodworks created customcrafted, dark wood cabinets with a pull out pantry. A black stone slab makes a dramatic statement for the island that Whispering Ridge Woodworks crafted as a unique contrast to the dark wood cabinets with muted, lighter color, slightly distressed under-cabinets. The moderate-sized dining and great room flows openly from the kitchen, to a view beyond the deck of the woods and lake. Natural stone from Montana was used for the fireplace, and throughout the home. 24 MONTANA’S FINEST HOMES SUMMER/FALL 2017

Jervos Construction of Columbia Falls artfully assembled the stone throughout the home to create accents and centerpieces like the great room fireplace. A large wood slab dining table mirrors the feel and shape of the kitchen island, lending coherence to the design. Wood floors with a subtle range of varying color in the dining and front room are also locally sourced. Another feature is the large copper bathtub that adorns the shared guest bath. The bathrooms contrast the darker wood features with light ivory granite countertops and blond wood wainscoting.

The guest bedrooms each have a unique dĂŠcor, with furniture that matches the natural feel of the homes finishes. Reclaimed barn wood brings a special flair to the main floor bathroom, which is contrasted with an elegant ivory distressed wood vanity. Barn wood used throughout the home adds coherence to the natural, locally sourced materials feel. The main floor deck, looking out over the forested landscape and lake, is large enough for family and friends to enjoy gatherings on warm summer nights. Artful, large tree beams accent the deck railing, which is outfitted with a dining table, barbecue and large sitting area. The entire back wall of the main room connects to the outdoors with sliding windows from Sierra Pacific Windows.

SLEEK DESIGN Modern design dominates this hoem from nuWest Builders

he striking power of concrete and modern design come through in this home from nuWest Builders. The Whitefish-based company used a bold approach in creating this home near Columbia Falls, Montana, and with the help of two other Whitefish companies, Timber Forge Design and Piney Creek Interiors, the home is an example of taking risks that can pay off in home design. Nuwest Builders built the home as a spec home, with the vision of a new homeowner who would fall in love with it. “The sole vision of this design was to give the future owner the feeling of having rented a luxury suite when they walked into any room in the house,” nuWest Builders owner Eric Payne said.

‘The beauty of raw concrete, along with other finishes, is striking. It adds a completely different vibe to the home.’ — ERIC PAYNE/NUWEST BUILDERS “We believe the team achieved exactly that and opened up many other potential buyers to this style of design, versus the more traditional home that has dominated the region for some time.â€? Payne said there was a challenge in using new products that many builders or contractors had not used in this market, but the house came through as a success. The features and finishes were chosen by the builder, who focused on using concrete throughout the home. “Concrete is a material used for decades throughout the world, but has been slow to come to use on interior or exterior residential finishes in northwest Montana,â€? Payne said. “The beauty of raw concrete, along with other finishes, is striking. It adds a completely different vibe to the home.â€? •
