FRI 7 to SAT 29 SEPTEMBER THE NEW WOLSEY THEATRE presents
MODS AND ROX By / Paul Sirett DIRECTED BY / Peter Rowe DESIGNED BY / Mark Walters
The Swinging Sixties, London is sizzling in the summer sun and Carnaby Street is a riot of fashion and colour. Cyril, the best dressed, quick-witted, fast-fisted, king of the Mods falls in love with Rox, the Soho stunner. There’s only one problem – Cyril has a very big nose. When the young Italian looker, Cristiano, rides into town on his Lambretta, Rox is smitten, and Cyril ends up playing Cupid, pouring his heart out to Rox through Cristiano’s mouth. Paul Sirett’s stunning new take on Cyrano de Bergerac is the latest in the New Wolsey's very popular line of actor-musician musicals. With a series of classic period songs including – Substitute, Keep on Runnin’, Itchycoo Park, She’s Not There, The Kids are Alright and many more – this evergreen romantic tale gets a high-octane electric score. As the story reaches its climax and the Mods and Rockers face off in the battle of Brighton Beach, will Rox discover the true writer of the song that stole her heart before it’s too late? If you enjoyed 20th Century Boy and Reasons to be Cheerful, also written by Paul Sirett, you’re going to love this! The story of a hooter on a scooter. 7.45pm (7pm on Tuesdays) Wed 12, Sat 15, Wed 19, Sat 22, Wed 26 & Sat 29 September at 2.30pm POST-SHOW TALK / Thu 20 September TIME /

TUE 9 to SAT 13 OCTOBER ENGLISH TOURING THEATRE presents
SACRED FLAME By / W Somerset Maugham DirecTED BY / Matthew Dunster
What happened on the night the young Great War hero, Maurice Tabret, died at home in his bed? His doctor says he died from natural causes, but his nurse points a finger of suspicion at his beautiful wife, Stella... Putting a twist on the classic murder mystery, this part thriller, part love story is by the enduringly popular playwright and novelist, Somerset Maugham, whose brilliance is discovered afresh in this vivid new production. This tense and graceful play is a fascinating exploration of love, devotion and family.
E S d AY S
Somerset Maugham is known mostly for his celebrated novels: Of Human Bondage, The Letter, Rain and The Razor’s Edge. Directed by Matthew Dunster (Mogadishu, Royal Exchange, Manchester; Love The Sinner, National Theatre & Doctor Faustus, Shakespeare’s Globe), The Sacred Flame is presented by English Touring Theatre who presented Tartuffe at the New Wolsey in 2011. “English, Touring and Theatre are three wonderful words. TUE 9 to SAT 13 OCTOBER THE NEW WOLSEY YOUNG COMPANY presents
Can’t Pay? Won’t Pay! By / Dario Fo Annie’s in trouble. She hasn’t paid the gas, the electric, or the rent. There’s no money left for food, and she’s been reduced to shoplifting to feed her law abiding husband George. Times are hard. Fuel prices are on the rise. There’s been a riot in the supermarket. A train’s been held up on the tracks. And it’s raining… bloody government! When there’s nothing left in the fridge, in your pocket or your bank account there’s only one thing left to do… laugh! Dario Fo’s brilliant play may be almost 40 years old, but with bankers’ bonuses, politicians on the make and the threat of strikes very little seems to have changed. Join the New Wolsey Young Company for a fast, funny and frantic farce where anything can happen when you’re trying to make ends meet!

THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER By / Alan Sillitoe Stage Adaptation by / Roy Williams Directed by / Marcus Romer Designed by / Lydia Denno Lighting Design by / Mark Beasley Visual Designs by / KMA
A long distance race. Real time. Follow one runner, alone with his thoughts. Colin is defiant. A young rebel, inhabiting the no-man’s land of detention centres and young offenders’ institutes, as his steady running rhythm transports him over a harsh, frost-bitten earth. Adapted by BAFTA winning and Olivier Award nominated playwright Roy Williams OBE (Sing Yer Heart Out For The Lads, Little Sweet Thing), this gritty adaptation of Alan Sillitoe’s classic text hits the ground running; unlocking the biting realism of the original book while placing the drama firmly in a contemporary frame.
