TUE 17 NOVEMBER THU 10 SEPTEMBER CHRIS DOBROWOLSKI presents
WARWICK ARTS CENTRE and CHINA PLATE presents
ANTARCTICA
THU 17 SEPTEMBER
Chris Dobrowolski is an artist. In 2008 he got selected for a residency in Antarctica. For three and a half months Chris lived and worked in the coldest, windiest, driest place in the world, surrounded by scientists, engineers and medical professionals at the top of their game. Every day was about survival. Sometimes, it’s very difficult to justify your position making art whilst everyone around you is trying to save the planet. This is an adventure story about overcoming hardships and celebrating difference via tales of cannibalistic ducks, ladybird books and a sledge built out of gold picture frames.
VESPER TIME
STACY MAKISHI presents
Stacy Makishi’s performance work Vesper Time takes a bold look at loss and mourning and her one-time wish to be a missionary. Vesper Time weaves together the undercurrents of Moby Dick and 80’s and 90's pop culture to offer up a ‘vesper’, a secular evening prayer. Shot through with her characteristic wit, this solo show draws on Stacy’s stand-up comedy roots and her theatrical sense of the uncanny.

CONFIRMATION By Chris Thorpe
“You always make decisions about what you believe based on hard evidence. Naturally. Or maybe not...Confirmation is a show that lets nobody off the hook: not us, and definitely not Thorpe.” Lyn Gardner on Confirmation Guardian ★★★★
In an election year where new voices have appeared in mainstream politics, writerperformer Chris Thorpe and The TEAM Artistic Director Rachel Chavkin examine the phenomenon of confirmation bias to find out how we believe what we believe, and how we can end up so far apart. A show about the gulfs we can’t talk across, and about the way we choose to see only the evidence that proves we’re right. Developed with and Directed by Rachel Chavkin. WAR CRIMES FOR THE HOME “We are our memories” Gloria Winstanley has more than most, of love, loss and lust. A woman’s story set in WW2 and the present, told from two perspectives - the same story - different generations. Using fingersmiths’ exceptional visual storytelling in BSL and spoken English, three actors weave a rich tapestry in telling the story of Gloria, who is struggling with questions being asked about a time she has tried to forget - a time of war, destruction and death. Directed by, the up-andcoming, Keziah Serreau and devised with a company of five highly skilled performers, STRIKE! uses intense physicality, humour, innovative aerial structures, straps, slack rope and a deluge of cardboard boxes to blur the boundaries between circus and theatre. “The ensemble amaze and astonish, a fun performance fuelled with acrobatics, clowning and shifting perspectives that I advise you to go and watch!” Theatre Fullstop TIME /

Steemy Dan: REELIN’ IN THE YEARS
THU 1 OCTOBER
Steemy Dan Celebrate The Music Of The Legendary Steely Dan
AN AUDIENCE WITH DIANE ABBOTT
Steemy Dan have been described as close as you could get to the real Steely Dan. They have also won praise from legendary session guitarist Elliot Randall who performed the stunning guitar solo on the original recording of Reelin’ In The Years. Their New Wolsey Theatre debut will feature that song and many more gems from Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s rich library of beautifully crafted songs. Performances by Steely Dan in the UK have been few and far between so this is a rare opportunity to hear hits such as Do It Again, Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Haitian Divorce and FM (No Static At All) performed in a concert setting.
In 1987 Labour MP Diane Abbott made history by becoming the first black woman ever elected to the British Parliament. She has since built a distinguished career as a parliamentarian, broadcaster and commentator. Her feisty style and straight manner was never better expressed than in a comment to former governor of the Bank of England, Sir Edward George: “You’re just an inflation nutter, aren’t you?” As a pupil at Harrow County Grammar School, Diane appeared as Lady Macduff alongside a young Michael Portillo – they are now both regulars on the BBC’s This Week programme. Presented as part of Black History Month.

FRI 2 OCTOBER VITAL XPOSURE presents
THE DISAPPEARANCE OF DOROTHY LAWRENCE Directed by Paulette Randall
It's 1914. England is at war. The Suffragette movement is gaining strength. Dorothy Lawrence, a young journalist with aspirations to become a war correspondent, takes to her bicycle to join the frontline in France. What happens next rocks the powers that be and shakes her life apart. Dorothy Lawrence was never seen in public again. 100 years on a young woman screams out a Punk Prayer in an orthodox cathedral, and her censure triggers a storm of protest that rocks the world. Vital Xposure investigates their remarkable stories, and how history repeats itself; exposing the ways society deals with women who step out of line. A cast of four with integrated British Sign Language interpretation and audio-visual elements leads the audience back in time to explore themes of inequality and power that still resonate today. Join us from 6pm for
SUFFRAGETTE ‘HOTBLOODS’: THE PRE-WAR MILITANTS The Suffragette movement gave us many fierce and controversial women who took great risks for the sake of the vote. They marched headlong into lines of police, hungerstruck, smashed windows, committed arson, sabotaged the Derby, slashed paintings and devised ingenious methods of resistance against a government which treated them as criminals – and their cause as subversive. The Suffragettes insisted that only a bill giving women the vote could put a stop to their militancy, but the threat of world war in 1914 changed everything. Katie Ward is a Suffolk based author of historical fiction. Her debut novel, Girl Reading, received high critical praise on both sides of the Atlantic. In this talk Katie will highlight well-known and obscure examples of female daring from the Edwardian era, providing a context for the show. TIME /

The Governess must confront her fear and protect the children from the alarming dangers that surround them. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS
(And What Alice Found There) By Lewis Carroll Adapted by Rob Salmon Directed by Sian Thomas
Alice goes through the looking glass into another world whose eccentric inhabitants seem to be either chess-pieces or characters from nursery rhymes – that is, when they are not talking to flowers or insects. Obeying their own impossible rules of logic, they are full of criticism or good advice as Alice, a lowly Pawn, sets out on her quest to become a Queen of the Chess Board. On her journey she meets Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, she learns to keep running fast enough to stay in the same place, why there is never any jam today, and about the importance of believing six impossible things before breakfast. An Epic Wartime Romance by celebrated playwright Terence Rattigan, from the producers behind the hit touring production Birdsong.
14 / www.wolseytheatre.co.uk
Based on Rattigan’s experiences as a tail gunner during World War II, Flare Path paints an evocative portrait of life in wartime Britain for the RAF bomber crews, their wives and sweethearts, who were left awaiting their return. Set in 1942 against a backdrop of heartache and quiet bravery, Flare Path tells the story of former actress Patricia, the wife of RAF pilot Teddy, as their marriage is tested to the limits by the surprise arrival of Patricia’s ex-lover and Hollywood idol Peter Kyle. An unexpected and dangerous mission over Germany puts Patricia at the centre of an emotional conflict as unpredictable as the war in the skies. Combining highly charged drama with a truly authentic taste of the fear, camaraderie and passion experienced by the men and women who fought to save their country, their families and each other. With heart tugging, human emotion, Flare Path opens an unforgettable window into a pivotal moment in our history. The Greatest Woman On Two Wheels
Maxine Peake’s witty, charming and critically acclaimed play celebrates the life of unsung sporting legend Beryl Burton – the greatest woman on two wheels. When Beryl Charnock, met keen cyclist Charlie Burton she was smitten, not only with Charlie but by the thrill and freedom found on her bike. She would out-work the men in the rhubarb fields, she could out-class the cyclists on the road, and still find time to knit young Denise a cycling jumper (it wasn't meant to come down to her knees!). With her husband, daughter and cycling club at her side, she became five times world pursuit champion, 13 times national pursuit champion, twice road-racing world champion and still made it home in time for dinner. Beryl Burton MBE, OBE, wife and mother, cycled her way into the record books becoming world and British record-holder and, with a determination to be the best, she always cycled home a hero.

BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETED BSL Interpreted performances feature an on-stage interpreter who interprets spoken English into sign language.
