THE NEW WOLSEY THEATRE, IPSWICH IN ASSOCIATION WITH NUFFIELD SOUTHAMPTON THEATRES PRESENT

ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS BY RICHARD BEAN. DIRECTED BY PETER ROWE

Set in the colourful underworld of Brighton in the swinging sixties. Richard Bean’s riotous farce mixes all the elements of classic comedy into a fizzing cocktail of fun. Mistaken identity, cross dressing, physical knockabout, slapstick, mad gags and outrageous puns are shaken and stirred as Francis Henshall, cast out of his skiffle band, finds that the best route to satisfy his considerable appetites for food, sex and money is to become One Man serving Two Guvnors. This joyous updating of Goldoni’s classic Italian comedy from the 18th century, The Servant of Two Masters, has quickly established itself as one of the great British comedies of the 21st Century, winning a Tony Award during the Broadway Debut in 2012. A NEW ROMANTIC COMEDY MUSICAL BY JIM BARNE & KIT BUCHAN

It’s Christmas Eve and Dougal has travelled from Ipswich to New York for his father’s wedding. At JFK Airport he’s greeted by Robyn. Tomorrow her sister becomes his stepmother and Robyn’s dreading it. Dougal can’t wait. But then Dougal loves Christmas and Robyn’s the original Grinch. Thrown together for a wild weekend in the city that never sleeps, their adventure becomes a musical whirlwind of confession, frustration and maxing-out credit cards in Macy’s. Will these two endearing misfits provide the ultimate test for the theory that opposites always attract? This brand new romantic comedy is filled with heart-warming and hilarious songs, from writers Jim Barne and Kit Buchan, winners of the 2018 MTI Stiles and Drewe Mentorship Award, celebrating the very best of emerging British song-writing talent. TWO TRAINS RUNNING

There’s a controversial new president in the White House, and racial tensions are on the rise. It is Pittsburgh, 1969, and the regulars of Memphis Lee’s restaurant are struggling to cope with the turbulence of a rapidly changing world. The diner is in threat of being torn down, a casualty of the city’s renovation project that is sweeping away the buildings of a community, but not its spirit. The iconic American playwright August Wilson paints a vivid portrait of everyday lives in this defining moment of American history. When Two Trains Running opened on Broadway in 1992, its legendary premiere won Tony and Drama Desk Awards. Directed by Nancy Medina, the 2018 winner of the Royal Theatrical Support Trust Sir Peter Hall Director Award, this major revival will introduce this Pulitzer Prize shortlisted modern classic to UK-wide audiences for the first time.

Fri 11 Oct, 7:45pm will be Captioned Sat 12 Oct, 2:30pm will be Audio Described via a headset Supported by the Royal Theatrical Support Trust.

TUE 8 TO SAT 12 OCT THE NEW WOLSEY YOUNG COMPANY PRESENT

THE LARAMIE PROJECT BY MOISÉS KAUFMAN & THE TECTONIC THEATRE PROJECT DIRECTED & DESIGNED BY ROB SALMON In October 1998 in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming, 21-year-old student Matthew Shepard was tied to a fence post, severely beaten, robbed, tortured and left, alone, to die. His body was discovered eighteen hours later. He was rushed to the hospital and put on life support. He died five days later. The reason for this brutal crime? Matthew Shepard was gay. The hate crime attracted vast attention worldwide, bringing sexual discrimination and violence to the forefront of public discourse. The Tectonic Theater Project travelled to Laramie in the aftermath of the murder with the intent of creating a theatrical portrait of a town coming to grips with horrible, hate-fuelled violence. Hailed as one of the most captivating and encompassing pieces of contemporary theatre, the play shocks, challenges, and moves all who watch it as it reveals the lowest depths of hatred and greatest heights of compassion that lies within all human beings in any seemingly average community.

FIVE YEARS MON 23 & TUE 24 SEP POLICE COPS

BADASS BE THY NAME Hot off the back of sell-out runs at Edinburgh Fringe and Soho Theatre London, multiaward-winning company Police Cops bring you their latest comedy blockbuster. MANCHESTER 1999. A gritty Northern kitchen-sink drama turns into a vampire slaying horror epic. Complete with a 90s rave soundtrack, supercharged physical comedy and more vampires that you can shake a stake at.

“Let me tell you about Foxwood. A place that my skipping voice would not get me thrown down stairs. Unlike other schools. It was very much like other schools.” From 1998-2002, Neal Pike attended a special educational needs school in Nottinghamshire. Five Years is about trying to hold on to a sense of who you are during those messy, brutal and mundane years of adolescence. With warmth and humour that cuts to the bone, Neal Pike explores identity, community and the parts of him that were shaped by Foxwood. SISTERHOOD

THU 26 SEP

This performance will be British Sign Language Interpreted, Captioned and Audio Described

Like Handmaids Tale, but with more hope, Sisterhood is a gentle but fearless adventure into the dark heart of patriarchal rule. Three women, aged 20, 40 and 60 (But not a virgin, mother or hag in sight) stand on a precipice, the patriarchy watching over them – flaming torches aloft – threatening to burn them all. This newly devised multimedia tale introducing you to a sisterhood caught between two timelines: the witch trials of the 16thC and modern-day women facing a world in political and environmental upheaval. Sisterhood transports the audience, in this extra-live performance, to a church cell in Wilmington, where three women await their trial in the morning. Soothing and passionate storytelling interweaves the stories of these three women with vestiges from the performers own lives, to reveal an immediate and clear association.

The Rock 'n' Roll Panto by Peter Rowe THU 28 NOV TO SAT 1 FEB Widow Twankey’s in a spin – there’s the Emperor’s robes to be cleaned, stir fry to be cooked and the mysterious magician, Abanazer, to be catered for. Then her eldest son Aladdin falls for Princess Lotus Blossom, the Emperor’s daughter, and she nearly chokes on her chop suey. But when Aladdin and his pet monkey, Cuddles, get their hands on an ancient oil lamp, a rocking green Genie magically appears to make all their dreams come true. Can they outwit the evil Abanazer, dodge the Emperor’s dragons, and prove that a Princess and a peasant can make the perfect pair? This ancient tale gets a brand new twist, incorporating over twenty classic songs including I’m A Believer, Papa Don’t Preach, ABC, I Will Survive and Highway to Hell, all played live by our multi-talented company of actor-musicians. Mix in outrageous jokes and classic slapstick, with some wicked magic, and Aladdin serves up a sizzling hot feast for all the family. AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES Audio Description captures the visual elements of a performance that a blind or partially sighted person might otherwise miss and describes them in clear, vivid language through a pair of headphones. Free touch tours take place an hour before the performance.

BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETED BSL interpreted performances feature a professional interpreter that translates spoken English into British Sign Language.

CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES Theatre captions are similar to television subtitles and give deaf, deafened or hard of hearing audiences access to live performance.

WHEELCHAIR USER ACCESS There are 6 wheelchair user accessible spaces in the New Wolsey Auditorium, 4 in row C and 2 in row K. The studio auditorium has 2 wheelchair user accessible spaces with a small passenger lift to the auditorium. The HEG is wheelchair user accessible also.

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY RELAXED PERFORMANCES A Relaxed and/or Dementia Friendly performance is one which has been carefully adjusted to reduce anxiety or stress for those who might otherwise find the experience unsettling or difficult. For example, changes are made to sound and lighting to eliminate surprise and soften their impact and there is a relaxed attitude to noise and moving around the auditorium during the performance. We have experienced these performances’ suitability for audiences with autism, sensory and communication needs, learning and/or physical disabilities, mental health conditions or people living with dementia. Our Bradbury Platform is installed for these performances, increasing our wheelchair user accessible spaces up to 12. We are working towards being a Dementia Friendly Venue and staff members are Dementia Friends. We look forward to welcoming you on your visit to the theatre.
