OUR HOUSE BY / Tim Firth MUSIC AND LYRICS BY / Madness Directed BY / Peter Rowe

Winner of the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical Inspired by the music of Madness, this uplifting musical comedy is a raucous tale of life and love, heartbreak and hilarity, good and bad set in London’s famous Camden Town in the mid-80’s. It’s Joe Casey’s 16th birthday and tonight’s the night he’s treating his girlfriend Sarah to an evening in a brand new luxury apartment - the only problem is he has to break in! When the police turn up Joe has to decide – run away, or face the music – a choice that will set the course of his life, and his love, forever. Bringing together one of the most successful British writers with one of the best loved British bands, this new actormusician production will have you laughing, crying and dancing in the aisles. Using some of the greatest hits from the mighty Madness back catalogue including: Our House, Baggy Trousers, My Girl, Embarrassment, The Sun and the Rain, Driving in My Car, The Wings of a Dove, Night Boat to Cairo and the all-time classic It Must Be Love, You’d be mad to miss it! FRI 27 & SAT 28 SEPTEMBER GLYNIS HENDERSON PRODUCTIONS present ACTION TO THE WORD’S PRODUCTION OF ANTHONY BURGESS’S

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE DIRECTED BY / Alexandra

Spencer-Jones This electrifying and testosterone-filled physical theatre ‘horror show’ exquisitely captures and transcends the spirit of Anthony Burgess’ original literary masterpiece, 50 years on from its publication. A Clockwork Orange lures its audience into the glorious glass-edged nastiness of Manchester’s underworld. A playtime of orgiastic ultra-violence and sexuality, it is the story of Alex and his Droogs in their battle against the tedium of adolescence. An unapologetic jubilation of the human condition, it remains as terrifyingly relevant today as when the book was published in 1962 and when the Stanley Kubrick film caused a stir in 1971.

Picture this: you’re in love, exams are over, summer is here and the party has started. University and big decisions lie ahead, but everything is suddenly about to change. A young man tells the story of a night to remember, with consequences he’ll never forget. With an original rap soundtrack, this compelling, witty and intimate play explores the harsh realities of growing up, independence and the consequences of a journey which will change lives forever. The play was shortlisted for the Best Play for Young People by the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain.

Adapted by / Carol

Ann Duffy Supple Directed by / Rob Salmon Dramatized by / Tim

‘Never so long as I live will I wander off the path into the woods when my Mother has told me not to’ These woods have many stories to tell… how one dark night two lost children stumbled upon a cottage made of cakes and fancies, how once upon a time a woodcutter saved a girl from the belly of a wolf, tales of lions, and witches and magic and more. Seven classic stories from the Brothers Grimm, including Hansel & Gretel, Ashputtel, The Lady & the Lion, Little Red Cap and Rumpelstiltskin. So follow the light of the pale moon through the trees and remember not to stray from the path. Dark, mischievous and just a little scary. If you’re under 8 you may need to sleep with the light on. Creative Learning uses the arts to develop creativity, unlock potential, explore difference and celebrate identity. Clear? If you’ve taken part, purchased or commissioned work, or seen what we do that statement probably makes sense, but if you haven’t it might take some explaining. So here goes… We use the productions, artists, skills and resources of the New Wolsey Theatre to increase your understanding of how theatre works, to develop your own creativity, to broaden your knowledge about a subject or the world around you, or to give you a better understanding about yourself. We even apply the techniques we use in a rehearsal room to give people the opportunity to see what motivates their own behaviour. We deliver a service to schools and colleges, a programme of projects and events for children, young people and the community, and a platform for students, arts educators and teachers to gain new skills and share good practice.

MILK PRESENTS: SELF SERVICE

The greatest vaudevillian double act ever conceived for the small stage. Marvel at their daring, gasp as they burlesque and improvise their way through this epic tale of companionship and separation, weep as they struggle with their inner daemons and celebrate as they triumph over adversity. One hour continuous flow of amusement with a dark and twisted heart Quotes on Vaudevillian Adventure (Edinburgh 2012) “Flawless” ★★★★★ Fest “Triumphant” ★★★★★ Threeweeks

With original live music, animation and wild costumes, Milk Presents take a wild stab at defining the indefinable in Self Service, a show that spans decades of popular culture, political upheaval and quaint normalness. This show episodically and sporadically leads the audience on a punk style journey through queer in an attempt to see what ‘normal’ really is when it comes to gender, sexuality and beyond. Self Service pokes fun at the way we live our lives and things we take for granted like getting married and having children.

PUNK ROCK

BY / Simon Stephens DIRECTED BY / Laura Norman

“Everything human beings do finishes up bad in the end. Everything good human beings ever make is built on something monstrous. Nothing lasts. We certainly won’t…” Ferociously funny, complex, contemporary and unnerving, Punk Rock explores the underlying jittery tensions, hormonal headiness and potential violence in a group of affluent, articulate seventeen-year-old students as they begin to plan for college and the rest of their lives. Set to a back drop of confrontational, hard edged Punk Rock, Simon Stephens’ powerful and shattering play explores the volatility of adolescent life, confronts young people as they really are, and builds inexorably towards its tragic and violent climax.

Whatley Grindle

The first major revival in 50 years of these intimate one-act plays by the acclaimed, multi-award winning British playwright, Sir Peter Shaffer (Amadeus, Equus, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, Lettice & Lovage and Five Finger Exercise ). Both short and bitter-sweet comedies, performed as a matching pair on the same night, give us a fascinating window into the turbulent changing attitudes to love in the 60s through a brilliant combination of comedy, pathos and drama. The Private Ear is set in a musky London bedsit, where reclusive Bob, normally used to giving his full attention to his record collection, calls in a favour from Ted, his slick, confident friend, to help him treat his date, the beautiful but shy Doreen, to a slap up meal. The Public Eye takes place in a swanky London accountancy office, where uptight Charles is confronted by Julian, an eccentric private detective hired by Charles to investigate his young wife’s suspected infidelity. Bob expects help. Charles expects proof. But in this darkly comic double bill nothing is as it seems. www.originaltheatre.com TIMEs / 7.45pm (Tuesday at 7pm) matinees / Wed 6 & Sat 9 Nov at 2.30pm post-show talk / Thu 7 Nov

AGENT for Change With the opening ceremony for the 2012 Paralympic Games fresh in everyone’s minds, it’s fantastic to see an arts organisation really challenging itself to ensure there are no barriers for disabled individuals to engage with its activities Claudia West Arts Council England

We recently appointed Ali Briggs as Agent for Change with a remit to create better opportunities for disabled participants and audiences in the eastern region. Access is one of our core principles and in recent years this has been evidenced in a number of collaborations and co-productions with Graeae, programming work by disabled artists and in the provision of participatory opportunities within our Creative Learning offer. Earlier this year, The New Wolsey and Graeae toured the UK with Reasons to be Cheerful, which was nominated for two TMA awards; The Best Touring Production Award and also for The Renee Stepham Award for Best Presentation of Touring Theatre.

“I am delighted to be joining the winners of the TMA Award for Most Welcoming Theatre and excited about working together to create change. I am a deaf actor – my passion is for theatre both on stage and as an audience member. I am committed to passing on that passion and making sure that deaf and disabled people are visible and have equal access to all of it.” Ali Briggs With Ali in post, we plan to extend our engagement with disability arts and artists in the eastern region and to provide a support network for artists and arts organisations.

If you want to join us on this journey please make contact with Ali at abriggs@wolseytheatre.co.uk 18 / ACCESSIBLE Performances / Autumn 2013

AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCE

Audio Described performances give you a live commentary about the action happening on stage through a pair of small headphones. BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETED BSL Interpreted performances feature an on-stage interpreter who converts spoken dialogue into British Sign Language.

RELAXED PERFORMANCE A Relaxed Performance is one which has been carefully adjusted to reduce anxiety or stress for those who might otherwise find the experience unsettling or difficult, for example changes are made to sound and lighting to eliminate surprises and soften their impact. We introduce our first relaxed performance as an extra option for audiences and to remove barriers to access and enjoyment. It's about making the theatre welcoming and inclusive for all.

The under 26 rate was extremely valuable to me whilst at University enabling me to see a wide variety of productions at an affordable rate which enhanced my degree.

GERALD O'Conner

We love going to the theatre as a family and the under 26 rate makes this possible. We choose together and get the chance to see a variety of shows throughout the year.

Charlotte Humphreys

Having the ability to go and see shows with my friends at a rate cheaper then the cinema was just amazing.
