SWANSEA CITY OPERA presents

ALISON JIEAR: HERE COME THE GIRLS

Critically acclaimed Swansea City Opera are back with their 10th Anniversary Tour of Faust by Gounod.

Laurence Olivier Award nominated vocalist Alison Jiear returns after her sell out performance last year in The Frank and Ella Show to celebrate some of the finest female vocalists of the last century: including Judy Garland, Peggy Lee, Julie London, Doris Day, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald, Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield & Barbra Streisand.

FAUST

Sung in English, this dark Gothic tale follows the fortunes of Faust, who weary of life, is contemplating suicide when he encounters Méphistophélès (the Devil). Faust agrees to exchange his soul for eternal youth and the fulfilment of his hedonistic wishes. The resulting journey balances romance and temptation; and is widely regarded as a magical and tuneful masterpiece, based on Goethe’s dramatic poem Faust, one of the great works of European Literature. "One of the finest plays Alan Bennett has ever written" Daily Telegraph

The History Boys opened at the National Theatre in 2004 to rave reviews and a sell-out run and went on to become one of their biggest ever hits, winning over 30 major awards including the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best New Play. In a recent national survey this comic masterpiece was voted the nation's favourite play. Set in the 1980's, The History Boys is the story of a group of bright, funny and unruly sixth-formers in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university. Their maverick English teacher is at odds with the young and shrewd supply teacher, whilst their headmaster is obsessed with results and league tables. Staffroom rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence overflow, provoking insistent questions about history and how you teach it. Their A Levels may be over, but their true education is only just beginning. This brand new production, from the producers of Avenue Q, Spring Awakening (UK Tours) and Seussical (West End), is an hilariously funny and exceptionally moving play about the true purpose of education. This national treasure has proved to be the perfect night at the theatre. Alan Bennett has been a household name for more than forty years. His numerous plays include Enjoy, The Madness of George III, Single Spies, Talking Heads and The Lady in the Van.

BLOOD WEDDING by Federico Garcia Lorca in a new version by David Ireland

In this day and age who can love who? Are there infatuations that still remain taboo? David Ireland's radical new take on Lorca's play, re-fuels this classic story with a contemporary twist. Jenny Sealey and David Ireland push this tale of searing lust, love and rebellion to its limits. When a young man and woman are overrun with passion, infatuation and defiance - the consequences are explosive. Winners of the TMA's 'Promotion of Diversity Award', Graeae is a force of change in world-class theatre, breaking down barriers, challenging preconceptions and boldly placing disabled artists centre stage. Artistic Director Jenny Sealey, MBE and winner of the Liberty Human Rights Arts Award has directed shows such as the award winning Reasons to be Cheerful and critically acclaimed The Threepenny Opera that she co-directed with New Wolsey's Artistic Director Peter Rowe. THE NEW WOLSEY YOUNG COMPANY presents

50 years on from its UK premiere

Arthur Miller’s tale of religious hysteria in the infamous witch trials of 1692 is a masterpiece of social and political commentary, and a timely warning on how profound religious loyalty can be manipulated by those seeking to serve their own ends. The story of how the small community of Salem is stirred into madness by superstition and personal grievances, culminating in a violent climax, is a savage attack on the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations. Join the acclaimed New Wolsey Young Company as they tackle ‘one of a handful of great plays that will both survive the twentieth century and bear witness to it’ John Peter, Sunday Times.

FEED THE BEAST

You are asking me to waste my time making sure some newspaper isn't going to be mean? Michael is moving into Number 10 Downing Street and there will be no charm offences with this Prime Minister, not with a country to run. There's no time for lunches with the press while there are children living in poverty. And there's certainly no time to comment on a minister's illicit affair while the country needs more nurses. But when his family's private life looks set to be the next big story, Michael seeks help from a 'bollocking b***ard' press secretary to control the media. Perhaps the odd 'distraction' might help after all? Feed The Beast is a fiercely funny look at the rocky relations between our press and politicians in a world of spin doctors and Leveson Inquiries, from the award-winning writer of Damages, Whipping It Up, Roaring Trade and the highly acclaimed BBC programmes, Sherlock and Doctor Who.

THE BUSINESS OF MURDER by Richard Harris

This acclaimed psychological thriller, which enjoyed a successful 9-year run in the West End, is written by Richard Harris (A Touch of Frost, The Avengers, The Sweeney) and is brought to Ipswich by Middle Ground Theatre Company. Stone, a humourless and dour man, invites Dee, a television playwright, over to his flat on the premise of discussing a script. Once there, she is surprised when superintendent Hallett, the man with whom she is having an affair, also arrives for an entirely different reason. But nothing is as it seems, and as the plot twists and turns the motive of their host Stone gradually becomes clear. They are all, it would seem, in the same business‌ The Business of Murder.

WHEN I GROW UP? Directed by Rob Salmon

This is the story of how Charlie (who’s a boy) decides what he wants to do when he grows up – it’s epic! It also contains moderate violence and mild peril, and scary scenes for those under the age of about… four? This is also the story of how Charlie (who’s a girl) decides what she wants to do when she grows up – it’s mega and completely cool! It doesn’t contain any violence, but there is a bit of a love story. When I Grow Up? is not just about choosing a job, it’s about working out what you’re good at and a little bit more about the kind of person you want to be. So if you’re 8 to 10 years old it’s the perfect show for you, you might even want to bring your adults along in case they want a reminder! VENUE / New Wolsey Studio TIMES / 11am & 2pm AGE /

ROOM ON THE BROOM From the book by Julia Donaldson Illustrated by Axel Scheffler

'Zesty and delightful... a clever compelling treat.' The Independent

Tall Stories’ magical, musical stage adaptation of the picture book by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler flies back into town prior to a smashing West End season! How the cat purred and how the witch grinned As they sat on their broomstick and flew through the wind The witch and her cat are flying happily along on their broomstick when a stormy wind blows the witch’s hat, bow and wand away into the night. A helpful dog, bird and frog find the witch’s lost things and all hop on the broom for a ride. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK! - it snaps in two! When a hungry dragon appears, who will save the poor witch? And will there ever be room on the broom for everyone? Songs, laughs and scary fun for children aged 3 and up (and their grown-ups).

THU 2 APRIL HALF MOON presents

CIRCLES IN THE SAND WED 1 APRIL

COMEDY CLUB 4 KIDS Like the name says it’s a Comedy Club 4 Kids!

Cracking entertainment for everyone over six years old and under 400 years old (no vampires). We have the best comedians from the UK and world circuit doing what they do best... but without the rude bits! It’s just like a normal comedy club, but it’s on in the day, kids are allowed in, and thus there is a higher than usual chance of heckles like “why is that your face!?”

‘A highlight for children... giving them a taste of some of the biggest names in comedy with the fun, rowdy feel of a real comedy club.’ The Guardian
