BIRDSONG ADAPTED BY / Rachel
Wagstaff Whatley
DIRECTED BY / Alastair
A mesmerising story of love, courage and sacrifice is now brought to the stage in this critically acclaimed version of Sebastian Faulks’s bestselling novel. An epic tale of love and war set both before and during the Great War. In pre-war France, a young Englishman, Stephen Wraysford, embarks on a passionate and dangerous affair with the beautiful Isabelle Azaire that turns their world upside down. As the war breaks out over the idyll of his former life, Stephen must lead his men through the carnage of the Battle of the Somme and through the sprawling tunnels that lie deep underground. Faced with the unprecedented horror of the war Stephen clings to the memory of Isabelle as his world explodes around him. Recently aired over Christmas on BBC 1 and following on from the hit West End production, this brand new adaptation marks the very first touring production of the play. Performed by a dynamic ensemble company including award winning actress Sarah Jayne Dunn (Drop Dead Gorgeous, Hollyoaks), Charlie G Hawkins (Eastenders), Arthur Bostrom of 'Allo, Allo' fame, Tim Van Eyken (War Horse) and introducing newcomer Jonathan Smith as Stephen Wraysford. “Captures both the pain and the pity of a war that almost defies comprehension.” Michael Billington, The Guardian www.originaltheatre.com www.birdsongthetour.com Follow us on Twitter @birdsongthetour TIMES / 7.45pm

Randle P McMurphy is a lover of life... of booze, bars and girls. After a life of crime he is faced with a simple choice; to be sent to prison or to submit to a psychiatric evaluation in a state mental institution. Taking what he believes to be the easy option, he finds himself confronted with the repressive regime of Nurse Ratched. His attempts to bring defiance, laughter and liberation to his fellow inmates result in a devastating conclusion.
While the servants’ party continues in the barn outside, aristocratic Miss Julie is drawn to the kitchen and to the socially ambitious Jean, her father’s valet. What starts as a harmless flirtation soon descends into a ferocious power struggle and battle of the sexes, from which neither can escape. www.uktouringtheatre.co.uk TIMES / 7pm

How to lose friends and infuriate people! BY / Roger McGough after Molière Directed BY / Gemma

Master wordsmith Roger McGough dips his quill into a Molière classic in this mockery of manners and morals set amongst 17th Century French aristocracy. Considered by many to be Molière’s best work, The Misanthrope will again join the creative forces of McGough, Director Gemma Bodinetz and English Touring Theatre to complete a tricolour of Molière comedies following the huge successes of Tartuffe and The Hypochondriac. Poet Alceste is disgusted with French society. Powdered fops gossip in code and bejewelled coquettes whisper behind fans wherever he looks. In pursuit of honesty, he embarks on a one-man crusade against forked tongues, frippery and fakery. But could the woman he has fallen in love with be the worst culprit of all?

A personal message from Sarah Holmes Chief Executive
One of the greatest pleasures working in the theatre is the chance to get involved with a wide variety of groups and organisations. And it’s not just on stage or behind the curtain that this happens. Every year we receive support from local businesses and individuals who want to help us in bringing new and exciting shows to the region. This takes a lot of commitment, hard work and, yes, money.
inviting you to come and play
As a charity we need to raise funds every year to maintain, refurbish and repair the buildings and that’s all before we even start to develop the shows. We have been extremely fortunate in the support we have had from the local business community. I would very much like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge and thank all our Culture Club members for joining us and promoting our shows to their staff, The Hearing Care Centre who work with us to improve our accessible performances and John Banks Honda for providing our Creative Learning team with a car to enable them to work more effectively and efficiently in the community. You all help us enormously to make the theatre a vibrant, thriving organisation that brings much to the community, and we hope that you will continue to take an active interest in our work.
The New Wolsey Theatre would like to thank…
Culture Club membership starts at £500 p.a. Your membership donation goes directly into our annual fundraising programme and helps us to draw down other funds. Please contact:
