TALAWA THEATRE COMPANY in association with THE NATIONAL THEATRE presents

Moon on a Rainbow Shawl

BY / Errol John DIRECTED BY / Michael Buffong

Talawa Theatre Company and the National Theatre take Errol John’s ‘bruising, brilliantly witty play’ (Time Out) on tour after its critically acclaimed run in London in 2012. In Port of Spain, Trinidad, the snatches of calypso music, hymn tunes and drums are interrupted by the raucous celebrations of troops returning from war. Here, neighbours drink, bawl, make love, look out for each other and crave a better life. But Ephraim is no dreamer and nothing, not even the seductive Rosa, is going to stop him escaping his dead-end job for a fresh start in England. Universally praised by critics and audiences alike, the original creative team have reunited to present John’s mesmerising and heart-warming masterpiece once more. TIMES / 7.45pm MATINEES /

Yes, it’s an affectionate, irreverent roller coaster ride from fig leaves to final judgment as the bad boys of abridgement tackle the great theological questions: Did Adam and Eve have navels? Did Moses really look like Charlton Heston? And why isn’t the word “phonetic” spelt the way it sounds? Whether you are Catholic or Protestant, Muslim or Jew, Atheist or Jedi, you will be tickled by the RSC’s romp through old time religion. ‘It’s wacky! It’s zany! And a little profaney.’

Richard Durrant, known widely as the Guitar Whisperer, is a world class virtuoso with an imaginative flair for presentation and a warm, easy rapport that has endeared him to audiences in the UK, Europe and South America. Unusually, for a concert guitarist, he performs standing up and his shows use beautiful, projected images. TIME / 7.45pm

OUR BIG LAND Written by /

Dan Allum Directed by / Amy Hodge

When Sophie Kaylor, a Gadje house dweller, marries Roman Farr, a Romany Gypsy and moves into his community, the signs appear ominous. But Roman’s powerful mother, Oceania, accepts Sophie into her family. However, it isn’t long before the Gypsy lifestyle puts the marriage under strain and when Sophie decides to leave Roman it sets in motion a horrific chain of events. Our Big Land is a provocatively dark atmospheric piece of theatre with the culture clash between Romany and non-Romany communities at its core. The themes of family bonds, cultural loyalty and love crossing culture boundaries are to be found at its centre, while echoes of yearning for freedom, choice and lost love resonate throughout. Gail McIntyre, Playhouse Associate Director, brings together the work of two of the UK’s most prolific and revered poets, Benjamin Zephaniah and Lemn Sissay in a heartbreaking and hilarious production that pulses with engery, love, loss and hope. Overnight he has become a refugee. As a violent civil war rages back home, Alem’s Ethiopian father and Eritrean mother make the heartbreaking decision to leave him in London. Amidst this turmoil Alem determines to take control, to transcend his refugee label, to become Alem Kelo - an African, a Peacemaker and no longer just a Refugee Boy. THE ELEPHANT MAN By / Bernard Pomerance Directed by / Rich Rusk &

Rob Salmon

‘Tis true my form is something odd, but blaming me is blaming God; Could I create myself anew, I would not fail in pleasing you.’ Seen first as a freak in a sideshow on the streets of Whitechapel the ‘Elephant Man’ is John Merrick, the grotesquely deformed Victorian who was ‘rescued’ by Frederick Treves, an eminent physician, who in trying to help Merrick only succeeded in making him another type of sideshow – this time for the great and the good of Victorian Society. Award winning visual theatre company Gecko will collaborate with the acclaimed New Wolsey Young Company to present Bernard Pomerance’s celebrated hit play. ‘If I could reach from pole to pole, or grasp the ocean with a span, I would be measured by the soul; the mind’s the standard of the man.’ VENUE / New Wolsey Studio TIMES / 7.45pm MATINEES / 2.30pm on Sat 26 April and Sat 3 May

...WHEN I GROW UP?

Sat 8 March NEW WOLSEY THEATRE presents

WHEN IGROW UP?

Charlie (who’s a boy) feels like he has to make choices all the time, what to watch, what to wear, when to get up, what does he want to eat… and he hates it. Charlie would really rather let his Mum or Dad make all his decisions for him. Charlie (who’s a girl) who loves making decisions, so much so that she really likes making them for everyone around her. So when they’re both asked at school to think about what job’s they might like to do in the future Charlie (who’s a boy) goes into a flat spin, and Charlie (who’s a girl) knows exactly what to do! Or does she? What is Creative Learning?

Creative Learning uses the arts to develop creativity, unlock potential, explore difference and celebrate identity. Clear? If you’ve taken part, purchased or commissioned work, or seen what we do that statement probably makes sense, but if you haven’t it might take some explaining. So here goes… We use the productions, artists, skills and resources of the New Wolsey Theatre to increase your understanding of how theatre works, to develop your own creativity, to broaden your knowledge about a subject or the world around you, or to give you a better understanding about yourself. We even apply the techniques we use in a rehearsal room to give people the opportunity to see what motivates their own behaviour. We deliver a service to schools and colleges, a programme of projects and events for children, young people and the community, and a platform for students, arts educators and teachers to gain new skills and share good practice.

NEW WOLSEY THEATRE TOURS The New Wolsey Theatre is opening its stage door to offer a brilliant and rare opportunity to go behind the scenes. ACCESS Information / Spring 2014 Since Autumn 2013, Ali Briggs has been part of our team as Agent For Change. Her role is to work with us to increase opportunities for Deaf and disabled people in Ipswich and the surrounding region. With this in mind we have been assessing all our activities, evaluating their accessibility and discussing how improvements can be made. Our goal is to have a range of additional services available to give any performance added accessibility including scripts, a synopsis, introductory notes, and touch tours. Give us a call at the Box Office on 01473 295900 to request any of these services, or visit:

www.wolseytheatre.co.uk/access

CAPTIONED PERFORMANCE Captioning converts the spoken word into text that provides people with hearing loss access to live performance. In captioning, the words appear on a screen at the same time as they are sung or spoken. Captions also include sound effects and offstage noises.

ACCESS CONCESSIONS If you are using an accessible service, you can choose to sit in any seat and pay the concession price (£3 off full price) for that performance. Assisting companions are £8.50.

See page 22 for ticket pricing.

AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCE Audio Described performances give you a live commentary about the action happening on stage through a pair of small headphones. To help you immerse yourself in the show as much as possible we offer touch tours before each audio described performance enabling you to explore the stage and get a feel of the set and costumes before the play starts.

BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETED BSL Interpreted performances feature an on-stage interpreter who converts spoken dialogue into British Sign Language.
