Welcome When the flurry of applications to perform in the Open Season flood in we never cease to be impressed by the creativity of the work. We see the return of many familiar faces, and welcome a number of new companies bringing exciting original work to the New Wolsey Theatre and studio. We’re thrilled that Nigel Barrett and Louise Mari from internationally reknowned theatre makers Shunt will close the season with Sleepover. This year we introduce a number of accessible performances for Deaf, hard of hearing, and visually impaired audiences members (see page 10).

2014 sees Appeal celebrate their 40th year and what better way to do it than with Oklahoma! The first collaboration from Rodgers & Hammerstein II based on Green Grow the Lilacs. Set in Oklahoma Territory outside the town of Claremore in 1906 it tells the story of Cowboy Curly and his romance with Laurey Williams. OKLAHOMA! was the first musical to have its songs and story written at the same time, making them and the ballet integral to the plot and advancement of the story, a new concept in 1943. This is one classic which has truly stood the test of time. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA! Music by Richard Rodgers Book & Lyrics Oscar Hammerstein II Based on

BEAUTIFUL THING By Jonathan Harvey ‘A warm and funny urban tale of two teenage boys discovering themselves, love and the songs of Mamma Cass.’ Set during a heat wave on a rundown Thamesmead estate, Jonathan Harvey’s stunning award winning play Beautiful Thing is an urban fairytale full of characters that abound with attitude, energy, frankness and humour. The story follows Jamie, an introvert, troubled teen whose dislike of football is reason enough for his classmates to bully him at every opportunity. Living with his pre-occupied single mum, Sandra, Jamie finds himself infatuated with his next door neighbour and classmate Ste. This iconic play truly captures what it is to be sixteen, gay and in the first full flush of love.

Perpetual Perpetual is an exploration of the relationship between organic and mechanical matter. We think ourselves distinct from machines, that our movements, thoughts and voices hold something human, something that can’t be replicated. But what is the body but mechanics, the skeleton scaffolding, the muscles pistons, the heart a dynamo and the brain its pilot? Does that distinction we cling to truly exist and if so, how long for? Jimmy Addy, Taylor Ayling and Liam Cadzow Webb are young performers working with collaborative methods of devising theatre. Perpetual is the first work of this collaboration.

ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE... …and all the men and women merely players, they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts. The annual Youth Perform! festival brings children and young people from all over Suffolk together to showcase their skills as young theatre makers, and this year takes the work of William Shakespeare as its theme in the 450th anniversary year of his birth. It’ll be everything from As You Like it to The Winter’s Tale and back again. So brush up your Shakespeare, see some scenes from plays you may have never seen before, hear the wonderful language of the Bard from a variety of schools and youth groups drawn from all over Suffolk and support this fantastic project.

A New Musical
‘A Battle of Wills Fought Across the Heavens’ When Galileo pointed his telescope into the heavens, what he glimpsed turned our view of the universe upside down. His family and friends were thrown into turmoil, while he came into direct conflict with the might of the Catholic Church - and the dreaded Inquisition. Would the light of science be allowed to shine into the future? Gallery Players bring you the world premiere of this brand new musical. Developed especially for Gallery, and following on from last year’s sell-out performances of ‘Into The Woods’, we promise you a fascinating and entertaining insight into the life of this incredible man. SANCTUARY
FOSSILS
by David Williamson
From fossils to fingerprints, canyons to candlewax, history literally shapes our world, and reveals itself in every nook, cranny and indentation. Join us on a voyage of discovery from rocks and remains to the sentient stories behind them. Unscene Suffolk is a community company of adults with visual impairment, whose performances are accessible to blind and sighted audiences.
Robert ‘Bob’ King, an internationally renowned investigative journalist, has returned to his native Australia to retire to the relative isolation of Queensland. But the sanctuary he thought he had found is breached by a student about to publish King’s biography. Conflict erupts between the idealist and the pragmatic realist as each challenges the truth about the other’s past. A gripping story, full of suspense with a thrilling climax.
