Accessible Performances on performances that have an age recommendation. Most of the work in the festival isn’t suitable for under 12’s, which is why we’ve added a family day for children and their families. Some of the work may have explicit, offensive or challenging content and where possible we have marked these shows as 18+ as a recommendation. But with many of the productions being at early stages in their development we don’t yet know the content of all of the work at the time of going to print, so if you’re not sure get in contact with our Ticket Sales team who will be able to advise. ? Thu 30 May LUCY ELLINSON

When I Was Old / When I Get Young A special community performance, where a small group of local people will step out onto the stage of the New Wolsey Theatre. From new-born baby to senior citizen, the project weaves together personal reflections and ambitions, past and future lives; to create a ‘story of a life time’. When I Was Old/ When I Get Young is made in response to Shakespeare’s famous Seven Ages of Man speech and captures what we’ve come to understand about being human. It is a unique story-telling experience that considers how we change over time. Developed as part of RSC Pilot Night. Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

The Bullet And The Bass Trombone

There’s an orchestra, trapped in a city during a military coup. Violence erupts, the orchestra becomes separated – lost – trying to find their way home. The composer is left to tell the story. An intricate, fractured narrative with a haunting soundtrack comes together like a mosaic: a whistling bird in the jungle, a gunfight at the airport, a murder in a forest of music stands… pieced together by a lone performer, trying to make sense of the chaos. “Harrowing, intelligent, beautifully crafted... and ultimately incredibly uplifting in an impossible-to-describe kind of way.” Andrew Haydon, Postcards from the Gods K sleepdogs.org

Session 1

How To Win A Cure For Against History Ageing

In 1885, the boy aristocrat Henry Cyril Paget was visited by some sort of ghost who promised him immortality and fabulousness. 20 years later, dying penniless in Monte Carlo, Henry realised the ghost had lied about one of those things. Self-help gurus David and Peter McWizard challenge their own mediocrity to bring you this gutwrenchingly sad play about frocks for men.

A piece about being young and foolish, and becoming old and wise, or about being young and wise and becoming old and foolish. This is an intimate, evocative performance that asks how we can talk more honestly and openly about ageing, and how this can prepare us better for the process. Ira Brand is a performancemaker and writer, working in theatre and live art.

How do we express our spleen? Whose business do we stick our noses into? When did we start wearing our hearts on our sleeves, and why are we up to our elbows in heels and bums? BBC R4 Slam Champion Ben Mellor takes you on a stand-up poetry and music fuelled tour around the body, attempting to get the measure of modern life through anatomical analogy. Presented with Ben’s trademark mix of free-verse poetry, rap, beatbox and a healthy dose of satirical humour, the text is underscored live by multiinstrumentalist Dan Steele on guitar, keys, drumpad and livelooping technology.

Based on the perversely funny memoir written by Hungarian satirist Karinthy Frigyes, this show explores a patient’s eye view of the disorientating symptoms and ultimate operation of a growing brain tumour. Placing the audience as collective patient it examines how physical illness can parallel the malignancy of personal relationships and the lengths we might go to to cure ourselves. Written in collaboration with Nick Walker, sound design Iain Armstrong. Developed with the support of Arts Council England, mac birmingham and Ferment, Bristol Old Vic, The ShowRoom at the University of Chichester and The Basement, Brighton through EXSE.

This is a story about Them. A story about Us. A story about my dad - a retired policeman and me, a protestor. About fear, bravery, being kettled, Superted, the Lone Ranger and policing the people in front of you. It’s about working out what matters, and standing up to protect it. It’s about me, and my Dad. There are also some jokes in it. Because serious things are worth laughing at a little bit. Mentored and supported by Third Angel. Supported with public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, ARC Stockton and Theatre in the Mill. Additional support from Embrace Arts and Sheffield Theatres.

Dancing bicycles and vintage Hoovers are brought to life in this surreal, comic exploration of feminism and the very domestic fight over who does the washing up. Brought to you by the creative team behind the sell out success of PULSE 2010 Poland 3 Iran 2, Domestic Labour reveals unlikely connections between Iran and Europe and the changing fortunes of women.

“I live in a flat made of wooden walls, 70’s carpet and doors that are locked from the other side. In the dark of the night, I listen to the building. It tells of finger prints on door handles, skin cells in the carpet, ghosts in the plumbing, what it used to be and what it will become.” The Forensics Of A Flat And Other Stories is the beginnings of a new piece from solo performer Francesca Millican-Slater, after the huge success of Me, Myself and Miss Gibbs. “A confident and likeable performer, MillicanSlater immediately engaged the audience, and there was a real sense that she was sharing part of herself” Fringe Guru

#TORYCORE WINNER OF THE ARCHES BRICK AWARD 2013.

W.I.P

James and Gemma are getting ready for a fight. This is the press conference. The cameras are rolling. An autocue scrolls relentlessly for 4 hours. As the insults and self-aggrandizing become more and more extreme the conversation becomes a linguistic version of the fight itself and then of life itself. This is a work-in-progress of a durational piece of work that James and Gemma hope will eventually last 24 hours. They’re going to try for 4 hours at PULSE and see what happens. The audience is free to come and go as they please. Action Hero is the collaboration between artists James Stenhouse and Gemma Paintin. They have been making work together since 2005, they are a couple, and their artistic process often resorts to fighting. K actionhero.org.uk

Part gig, part metal-recital, part exorcism, #TORYCORE combines sludge and doom metal with the Budget speech 2013; a pounding subverbal deathgrowl with text samples from the blue suits at Tory HQ. Chris Thorpe and Steve Lawson on guitar, Lucy Ellinson on vocals with lyrics by George Osborne and the architects of austerity. #TORYCORE is twisted avant-garde metal and a guttural vocal that plays like a verbatim record of a government ripping society’s guts out. “Forest Fringe’s Death Metal version of the budget not perfect but magnificently visceral” Time Out (from Latitude Fest)

Growing up isn’t easy, especially when you’re in love with a bear. This is a story about a girl who dares to follow her longing. The youngest daughter of a king, she feels like a misfit. Then one night a compelling dream leads her deep into the forest, where a chance encounter sets her on a fateful path she could never have anticipated. Following a sell-out success at Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2011 and a critically-acclaimed tour of the UK and Ireland in 2012, The Wrong Crowd combine stunning puppetry, enchanting music and deft humour in this dark, coming-of-age tale about identity, passion and the willingness to love. “A fantastical world that has all the fresh, unusual and sinister appeal of wandering into a fairy-tale for the first time” ★★★★ The Scotsman K wrongcrowdtheatre.co.uk

I Wish I Was Lonely WORK-IN-PROGRESS I Wish I Was Lonely is a participatory show about contactability. A show in which the audience commit to leaving their phones on. A show investigating what it means to participate in communication – or not. There will be poems, there will be stories and there will be conversation. I Wish I Was Lonely is the new show from Fringe-First winners Hannah Jane Walker and Chris Thorpe (following 2011’s The Oh F*ck Moment) that asks whether the invisible waves we’re tethered to might be drowning who we are. ? Predator finishing off what I started when I was five

A live, interactive re-telling of the 1987 classic film, Predator. At five years old my brother and I snuck down stairs after my parents had gone to bed and taped the film Predator off the TV. We would watch the film religiously thereafter and began creating our own version. What started out as a scene for scene re-creation soon turned into our own re-imagining. Unfortunately we never finished what we had started. So here’s my chance! With a little bit of your help I will finish off what’s been in the making for 20 years, using some of the same techniques that my brother and I started with, as well as bringing to life and realising the fantasy that we wished we were able to achieve in 1991. So please, sit down and join me at my table, as we play with remote control helicopters, action men, puppets and our own imaginations to complete our own version of the film Predator and finally finishing off what I started when I was five.

A Faultline Hi. Hello. I am Jessica Pam Latowicki. I am privileged to be here with you today. Later in this show I am going to run into that wall there 20 times. As fast as I can. I am going to start at the line and run. I am going to do my best not to put my hands up. I am going to run into that wall there 20 times because I can. A Faultline is a daring and darkly funny exploration of survival, friction, earthquakes and the idea that maybe we are all just spare capacity out and about spending our excess capital. Complete with a dangerous show-stopping finale and light refreshments for all. A Faultline was developed with support from the National Theatre Studio. Jessica Latowicki is a live artist, writer and performer from New York City. Her work has been seen at BAC, ICA, Shunt and Brick Box. She is one half of the theatre company Made In China.

The Forest & The Field

The Forest & The Field is a gently seductive, immersive piece of non-fiction storytelling, which asks its audience to look at themselves, and to consider what we’re all doing when we meet in a theatre space. Drawing on a wealth of examples from Shakespeare to O.J. Simpson, The Forest & The Field creates a space for reflecting on theatre, from inside the moment of its happening. The piece considers how makers and audiences over time have imagined what theatre is, and how it relates to the world around it; and it asks some searching questions about how theatre might change to meet the social and cultural challenges of tomorrow - and how we might change with it. Relaxed and informal, yet passionate and provocative, The Forest & The Field opens up an irresistible invitation not only to theatre makers and thoughtful audiences, but to anyone with an interest in how we live today.

The Pain of Desire

Wendy Bevan and Temper Temper create a world of ambiguity sending a shiver to the core. Their epic, original sound, fuses muscular jazz, glittering blues and Weimar rock and roll; a crunching drum beat that shakes the walls, a thick bassline that echoes in the chest; led by wild coiffered pianist Seiriol Davies’ madcap, expert playing. Bevan’s stunning other worldly performance as a statuesque femme fatale is hypnotic, and pure Dietrich, her hauntingly beautiful voice, echoing the pain of desire. Temper Temper’s soundscape comes in torrential waves, exploring a “memorable journey into a David Lynch-like world of deep emotion, rich drama and superb music.” Temper Temper is the coming together of four musicians, performers and artists with multidisciplinary backgrounds. Led by Wendy Bevan; founder/ creative director, who has a rich history in the visual arts, and is well known as a photographer and musician, she has also worked as a performer/singer with a number of major producers. ? Sat 8 June FIGS IN WIGS

CHRIS GOODE & COMPANY

We, Object

Thompson’s Live

Figs in Wigs have been taking objects for granted; exploiting their physical forms by placing them under the gaze of spectators. We have objectified objects for too long. It’s time to put the spotlight in the spotlight, let the staging upstage us, and show our objects some affection. We, Object is an absurdist amalgamation of visual puns, word play and amateur dancing dealing with objects, objectification and objection. As the show progresses, it becomes increasingly unclear as to who (or what) is (or isn’t) being objectified. Our movements are big yet our objects small. Can their minute form represent and challenge the way society belittles the ever-present issue of female objectification? Or perhaps it’s just a show about small things.

A podcast series by Chris Goode & Company, focusing on conversation around theatre and performance, poetry and music, arts and ideas. Each episode brings together three guests, in front of a live audience, to talk about whatever’s been on their mind lately – what they’ve been seeing and doing and enjoying, as well as what they’ve been making or thinking about. Writer and theatre maker Chris Goode hosts the event and guests on previous editions have included Stella Duffy, Wendy Houstoun, Phelim McDermott, Judith Knight and Dan Rebellato. For this new series, Thompson’s Live is on the road, touring the UK to find out what’s going on in the various locations where Chris Goode & Company is working this spring.

We, Object, is a new work which has been previewed at the Roundhouse and further developed with support from The Junction, Cambridge and The New Wolsey Theatre.

Now I am superlatively, Institute WORK-IN-PROGRESS actually awake

W.I.P

By Liam Jarvis and Hannah Barker

Created by Amit Lahav

Drawing inspiration from the remarkable story of British musicologist Clive Wearing, “Now I am superlatively, actually awake” is a looping audio performance for single audience members that explores what it means to have only moment-tomoment consciousness. “Now I am superlatively, actually awake” is part of Analogue’s strand of work inspired by leading research around neuroscience, following the award-winning 2401 Objects. “The bright young things of British theatre” The Observer

Critically acclaimed dance theatre company Gecko return with an intimate, funny and revealing exploration of care. Institute is driven by Gecko’s desire to explore complexities in human nature; our loss of care and our complete reliance on one another. We are entering a time in which we are potentially more fractured and disconnected than ever before. When the time comes, will anyone really care? Mark Thomas : Bravo Figaro Scotsman Fringe First Award 2012 WINNER Glasgow Herald Angel Award 2012 WINNER

After walking the wall in the West Bank, becoming Guinness World Record holder for political protests and chasing arms dealers around the country Mark Thomas turns his attention to matters closer to home with a show about his father. First commissioned by the Royal Opera House, Bravo Figaro is the true tale of a self-employed builder’s love of opera, degenerative illness and how to put opera on in a bungalow in Bournemouth. It is about love, death and the search for peace in an imperfect world... with some gags thrown in for luck and told by one of the finest storytellers in the country. “This powerful story was packed full of emotion, taking the audience on an incredible ride through the decades and, more significantly, the contradictory, complex feelings he had for this brusque character. Always surprising as it deftly nipped between the moving and the funnies this was a ride that left the audience drained in the best possible way, having come through an amazing tale. Absolutely superlative stuff.” Chortle.co.uk
