Bubba Theo’s Journey When Bubba Theo was born, Samantha Moore realised her family had joined those Ranges families that had a fight on their hands. Theo was born with bilateral renal cystic dysplasia. Currently fed through a nasogastric tube to support his growth and manage his kidney condition, Theo and Sam will make the drive to The Royal Children’s Hospital soon and return with a feeding peg attached to Theo’s stomach. This starts the journey for his eventual kidney transplant. Over the years, Samantha has been the vessel for mums from all over the Ranges to confide in, and she has learnt that there is a recurring theme amongst mums of sick kids. On social media, parents celebrate healthy babies taking their first steps and munching first toasts; but parents of sick kids often sit mute, knowing that their child may never reach those goals. One mum explained it as ‘being in black and white and watching everyone else move around in colour’. When it feels that everyone is celebrating the norms in life, some amazing parents are celebrating nights without feeding, without tube accidents, clear blood tests, and running up kilometres with trips to specialists. These parents are our neighbours, our friends. They are the families that can’t turn up to play dates and are hyper-vigilant about colds and sniffles. These are the families that need our support. From providing the feeding supplements for Theo, through to his occupational therapy, Samantha found The Royal Children’s Hospital a massive support, and as part of this year’s Royal Children’s Appeal, she has organised a local raffle. From golf lessons, hotel and beauty vouchers to bespoke pottery, this is the raffle for the Ranges.

2021 Mt Macedon ANZAC Day Dawn Service not to proceed. Due to the COVID-19 physical distance requirements for public events, the 2021 Mt Macedon ANZAC Day Dawn Service is not able to take place. However, to still honour the local memories and community contributions to our 'normal' service, the organising committee is committed to providing a locally inspired and produced virtual service that will be available for all to take part in, through a widely available video production. The decision taken not to proceed with the 2021 Mt Macedon ANZAC Day Dawn Service was a reluctant one. The narrow walkway viewing area at Mt Macedon does not allow people to physically distance, and contact tracing data is very difficult to collect with the various access points to the site. And with the still unpredictable Covid situation in April, the health and safety of the public, especially that of our veterans, is the committee’s highest priority. Filming is underway for the 2021 Mt Macedon ANZAC Dawn Service, which will not only feature traditional parts of the commemorative event, but additional images and
stories from around the Shire of Macedon Ranges. There will be a professionally-produced, twentyminute video, plus an extended version with local stories and ‘Voices from the Front’ — letters and recollections from veterans from the region. A special inclusion this year will be recently recorded recollections from two Macedon Ranges World War Two veterans. From dawn on ANZAC Day, the video of the Dawn Service can be seen on mtmacedondawnservice.org or on the Facebook site: The Mt Macedon Anzac Day Dawn Service. Families and individuals with photos, stories, letters and recollections suitable for the video are invited to contact the Dawn Service Committee mtmacedondawnservice@gmail.com. The organizing Committee expects 2022 will see the return of the popular public event as COVID-19 restrictions are gradually eased over the coming year. SUBMITTED BY BRUCE MILDENHALL

New servo on its way
Woodend residents will soon be able to buy their fuel close to home, with the $2 million redevelopment of the town’s only service station almost complete. The BP Service Station will also include a Wild Bean Café. Constructed by Becon Constructions – a Hallambased company experienced in service station constructions – the station includes the latest in industry standard fiberglass tanks. Clint Noble of Prompt Petroleum Services said that the two underground tanks, with a total capacity of 200,000 litres, feature leak-detection design. “Each fibreglass tank has a double wall, and the cavity between the two compartments – called an ‘inkwell’ – is filled with dye. If the internal wall of the tank splits for some reason, the dye can be detected in the fuel. If the external wall of the tank splits, the level in the inkwell drops, which can also be picked up quickly.”
If a leak should occur, the tanks are designed so that they can be repaired in situ. Before construction began, Becon removed the old-style steel tanks, which had rusted and needed replacing – along with contaminated soil on the site. Site Manager Leigh Rogers said construction of the service station is due for completion in May. SUBMITTED BY TERRY LONGTON
Holgate Brewhouse recovering after Covid With bars and restaurants across the country hit hard by the pandemic, one of Woodend’s major tourist drawcards, Holgate Brewhouse, has emerged largely unscathed. Having opened their $8 million Visitor Discovery Centre and Taproom just weeks before the first lockdown in Victoria, co-owners Paul and Natasha Holgate had to think creatively to keep the business thriving. “As half of our business is keg beer supplied to boutique hotels, when hotels shut, we lost a lot of business overnight,” Natasha said. In response, the couple quickly launched an online shop for both bottled beer and takeaway food. “We got a lot of local support during that time. Before COVID, we thought that the tourist side of the business was evenly split between Melbourne and regional visitors. However, when the ‘ring of steel’ was in place, our trade was still at 80 per cent – showing how strongly regional areas were supporting us,” said Natasha. Now that Victoria’s restrictions have eased, Natasha said Holgate Brewhouse has never been busier. “Business has gone through the roof. We are also brewing for other brewers so are running at full capacity. We employed two new brewers in December, and now have five employees on production and packaging,” she said. A new self-guided brewery tour has been introduced, using QR codes linked to the brewery’s
website. Created by Paul and Natasha’s son, James – who started his involvement in the family brewing business as a three-year-old in the garage – the tour details the beer production process and takes visitors through historic photos of Woodend and the hotel. Holgate Brewhouse employs 15 people in the Brewhouse and 25 full and part timers in the hotel. The business recently installed a 90KW solar unit to cover the electricity needs for the Brewhouse’s beer production process.

Caring for the community Known for her outgoing personality and caring nature, Reverend Melissa Clark holds a special place in the hearts of many Woodend people – and she feels likewise about them. Halfway through a service at St Mary’s for the Victorian Anglican Bishops, Reverend Melissa Clark became slightly unsettled when her cat, Dottie, appeared and sauntered down the aisle. “I was naturally a bit nervous with this audience – and then Dottie walked in. I suddenly realised the Archbishop of Melbourne was sitting in her favourite row. I thought she was going to rub herself against his leg and put hair all over his vestments. It was a bit of an anxious moment. Luckily Dottie eventually settled in the Bishop’s chair at the altar.” Though it might have been a first for the Archbishop, Dottie is well-known to the St Mary’s congregation. Like her owner, the cat seems to have a way with people. “She often wanders in and makes herself at home during a service. I believe Dottie knows who needs comforting, and acknowledges them as she makes her way to the front. I think that sometimes helps people in a small way.” Melissa – or ‘Rev Mel’, as she is known to her parishioners – has always been aware of the importance of gestures of comfort. Mel grew up in Sunshine and attended the Anglican church as a child. After taking a leave of absence as a teenager, she returned to the church in her early twenties. “By that stage I’d done a fair bit of
singing; I’m a classically trained singer. I went to our family church in Sunshine one day, and I was chatting to the priest, and he said ‘So what do you do? What gifts do you have?’ And I said ‘I don’t have any gifts, and he said ‘Yes you do – I heard you singing the hymns.’” On the priest’s request, Mel went on to form a church choir and, later, work as volunteer in the church. She became Parish secretary and, with her soon-to-be-husband Ray, started supporting a particularly vulnerable group in the church community. “The church had a large congregation of South Sudanese refugees, and many of their children were bored and disengaged. We started bringing books in to read to them, which then became a children’s ministry.” Around this time, it dawned on Mel that helping others and doing work in the community was her calling. “I told Ray, ‘something is happening to me here – I think I need to explore
Holistic Funeral Directors
what I’m meant to be doing, and I think it’s going to be in the church.’ He, and a few other trusted friends said, ‘it’s about time you saw that.’” So others had seen it in me before I recognised it in myself.” Mel studied Theology at Trinity College, Melbourne, before being ordained in November 2015. She joined the Anglican Parish of Woodend-Trentham in early 2016. With “Come as you are, everyone is welcome” often displayed on the church’s colourful sign on High Street, the parish reflects Mel’s inclusive approach. The theme of helping others runs through Mel’s sermons, and inspires her to stand up for what she believes in. She was a prominent campaigner for LGBTI people’s rights during the marriage equality debate in 2017, and is a strong supporter of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Footscray. “This role is the joy of my life” “I absolutely love it. I feel deeply that I had a calling to be here. This is my first parish, and you’re only meant to be at your first Parish for two years. But I’ve told my Bishop he’ll need a crowbar to get me out of here, because I’m home.” Mel says the challenges of the pandemic highlighted the best aspects of living in a community like Woodend. “I didn’t even have to ask – people left donations of food and household items at the church, and fell over themselves to help.” SUBMITTED BY TERRY LONGTON AND KATE O’CONNOR

With just over one-third of this first year of our Council term over, we have been kept very busy on your behalf. We would like to thank everyone for providing feedback on the Woodend Community Centre Draft Masterplan during March. All submissions will be considered, and a final masterplan will be presented to a future Council meeting. We are looking forward to this project progressing. One already completed project is the new outdoor exercise equipment installed at Campaspe Park. Have you seen it or had a try? It is free to use, and if you missed the classes in March, you can use a QR code on your phone to gain instructions if you need to. Woodend is one of four towns where they have been installed thanks to funding from the Rotary Club of Kyneton, Campaspe River Land Management Group, Council and a state government community sports fund infrastructure grant. Residents of towns without the equipment are feeling extremely jealous. Check them out to see what all the fuss is about. Hopefully by the time you read this, we will have appointed our new CEO, but you will have to wait a bit longer until they commence in mid-May. We would like to thank Acting CEO John Nevins for looking after the Shire since November. His time as Acting CEO finishes on the 21st of April, and we are most grateful for his knowledge imparted and how much he has embraced being part of our community during the short time he has been here. Our new Deliberative Engagement process for community consultation commenced mid-March and will be completed mid-April. A community panel has been selected from a broad range of applicants to represent the demographics of our communities in the consultation. Following their sessions, the panel will report back to Councillors with a proposed community vision and Could you thoughts on the council plan, budget and long-term financial resource plan. The whole community will get to see their recommendations and how council Home Loan? responded, along with providing input into the final documents in early May. We will update you in the next edition. Enjoy the autumn leaves, and make sure you continue to check out Council’s website and Facebook page for all the latest news, events and ways to provide feedback.

Jude Perl’s insight into her personal and relatable mental health struggles of being an adult, will make you want to sing along, cry and laugh all at once. Sometimes labels are super useful, particularly when you’re washing your fave jumper. But at other times, labels can halt your growth and suppress your very existence. Jude reminds us when to be aware of these labels, and when the labels are totally useless – and most importantly, that we are not alone. She’ll talk about some tough stuff, make you laugh and make you feel truly human. Friday 18 June, 8pm. Bookings: 1300 888 802 or online: mrsc.vic.gov.au/arts-events

The Mount Players finally re-open the curtains It is with much pride and excitement that I put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) this month. Our theatre finally welcomed in its first group for a play reading in February, and to see people sitting in our auditorium after so long was very moving indeed. We are now in rehearsal for our first show, Too Many Crooks, opening on 14 May. Step back in time and be part of the audience at a BBC radio play, with live sound effects and six actors taking on numerous roles to tell the hilarious story of a bunch of crooks who just can’t get it right! Adapted from the 1959 British comedy movie starring, among others, Terry Thomas, Sydney James & George Cole. Director, John Rowlands has adapted the script for the stage and promises lots of laughs. We will have a limited seating capacity due to Covid restrictions, so get in early to secure yourself a seat. For full details on the show and to book tickets we invite you to our website www.themountplayers.com. You can also check out our What’s On section for our monthly play readings, where everyone is welcome. SUBMITTED BY KAREN HUNT

Downtown the Musical
“Five essential workers meet in a bar (on Zoom) and nearly two years later they are thrilled to be opening “Downtown! The Mod Musical! In April at the Bluestone Theatre, Kyneton!” Throughout 2020, our world has been flipped upside down and turned on its head, and an industry that took a large brunt of the impact was the arts! But this didn’t stop this group of women from coming together through Zoom, FaceTime, socially distanced outside meet ups and various other mediums to rehearse a production full of joy and groovy music. Comprising a cast full of essential healthcare workers, the group’s workload didn’t lull during this pandemic, it grew! Through it all, they still had an outlet to express themselves and have a laugh, even when one of the cast members was overseas. The show, which transformed from a conversation in 2018 into the full production in April 2021, shares stories from the ‘60s and ‘70s, and is the work of a Woodend local, Karen Morgan, who has been working, while producing and directing this full production. Featuring songs such as: Wishin’ and Hopin’; Preacher Man; Shout; Downtown; These Boots are Made for Walking; One two three; Don’t Sleep in the Subway… and more.

Book tickets for the Rotary Trivia Quiz The Rotary Club of Woodend is running a Trivia Fundraising Quiz, in aid of crisis accommodation for Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health (SCCH). “The definition of homelessness extends well beyond the traditional image of people sleeping rough on city streets,” said Mick Deviny, president of Woodend Rotary. “The term homelessness incorporates anyone who does not have a secure place to live. This includes people sleeping in their cars, sheds, couch-surfing et cetera, and those who are in high-risk environments, due to domestic violence, and sexual and physical abuse.” With a Woodend winter only a few months away, this is your opportunity to come along, have some fun and help raise funds for a very worthy cause.
The evening will feature a trivia quiz, run by quizmaster and local identity ‘King Maxwell’. There will be prizes for the winning table, as well as some fun games and a raffle. All profits from the night will be donated to SCCH. Tickets are available on https:// www.trybooking.com/BPEAA. Please put a table of 6-8 people together. Smaller groups will be on shared tables. Nature Stewards Program
Would you like to do more for nature but don’t know where to start? Nature Stewards is a 10-week educational program that will introduce you to Victorian and local nature and show you ways to take action for the environment. This program will allow you to discover more about your local environment, connect you with others in your community, and help you learn how to volunteer for nature at home, online, and in your community. Participants will learn about conserving ecosystems, managing soils, and fungi, plants and animals. Macedon Ranges Shire Council have partnered with two other local governments (Melton and Hume) to host the Nature Stewards Program, run by Outdoors Victoria, a notfor-profit organisation. The Nature Stewards program will run between April and June 2021 and includes 10 class sessions of 3 hours, and four field sessions of 4 hours. You don’t need to have existing experience in environmental care or work -- anyone over the age of 18 years with an interest in learning more about the local environment is encouraged to join up. People who are keen to learn about the environment and potentially consider incorporating this knowledge into a community group are also encouraged to apply. PS My Family Matters is looking for local people to join its committee and for peer support volunteers. “We have been successful in our funding applications to both the NDIS and the State Government,” said Tamara Wilson, president of PSMFM. “This funding has secured our operation for the next 3 years, and we have a need for people to volunteer both as committee members and as peer support volunteers to our carers.” PSMFM is looking for people who live in (or near) the Macedon Ranges, who have a passion for issues related to mental health and would like to get involved with an organisation that supports carers of loved ones with mental illness. Committee members and volunteers will be offered the opportunity to complete mental health first aid training as part of their induction. "This is a chance to join a team who are truly making a difference to the lives of many in our community. If you can spare a few hours a month, we would love to hear from you,” said Tamara. “Our new funding arrangements give us a great opportunity to develop our service proposition and offer support to more carers throughout the Ranges.” For further information and to register interest please call 0475 269 965. A Connected Woodend As part of its work to build connections in Woodend, the Woodend Neighbourhood House is considering the question how a community can come out stronger and not divided after a disaster? Steve Pascoe is perfectly placed to help answer this question. having been impacted by the 2009 bushfires, and as one of the community leaders who led the Strathewen Community Renewal Association to give voice to locals. Ten years later Steve was invited into Mallacoota after the 2019/20 bushfires and has walked alongside those communities in their recovery processes. Steve has been involved in emergencies for over 30 years, as a volunteer and as a professional in both CFA and local government. The House invites Woodend community members to come and hear from Steve this month at the House. Steve is a dynamic presenter, and you will be invited to ask any questions you like. Stories from Strathewen can be found on the ‘Big Stories’ site www.bigstories. com.au/. This is a free event, and Steve is volunteering his time because he is passionate about the connectedness of local communities. Due to COVID conditions, registrations are required. The talk will be on Wednesday 21 April from 7.00 pm – 8.30 pm. Please register your attendance only if you plan on attending, at https://www.woodendnh.org.au/courses/ steve-pascoe-connectedness-communities/ A further ‘A Connected Woodend’ meeting will take place in July 2021. Anyone wishing to be involved will be welcome to attend.

Macedon-Woodend Scout Group off to a great start
Grants applications now open!
The last month has marked an exciting time for our local Scouts, following the official opening of the Macedon-Woodend Scout Group, the joining of 2nd Woodend and 1st Macedon Scout Groups. Local dignitaries and Scout officials came together with the families and leaders of the group to celebrate the merger. The group has risen quickly from the restraints of lockdowns and has been back to adventuring all over the State. Cubs and Scouts recently returned from a camp at Anglesea, where they spent a weekend camping and learning to kayak and surf. The Venturers have endured both Mt Feathertop and the Glenelg River already this year, with two of the team members close to achieving their Queen’s Scout Awards. The Group is committed to helping the young people of the Macedon Ranges choose adventure as a way of learning teamwork, leadership and resilience – all in the name of having fun. Woodend Police Woodend Police are going through some changes at the moment, with Lieutenant Senior Constable Les Drew retiring a little earlier than expected, and S/Const Marianne Voswinkel returning to her duties at Gisborne and with leave, our services will need to be bolstered by the support of our surrounding stations in March. I know that Marianne has enjoyed her time at Woodend, and she has done a power of work for which I thank her . Senior Constable Steven Davies from Kyneton will be with us for the next three months, starting in mid-March. I hope you get to know him and show him the benefits and joys of working within the Woodend community. I’ve seen the community’s comments on social media in relation to the reduction of the speed limit on Black Forest Drive. Woodend Police were not part of the decisionmaking process for the reduced speed limit, however, the signs are lawful and therefore enforceable from the moment they are erected.

Help, my dog ate the venetians!
Sometimes there are accidents. (Cats up the sheers, dogs using timber venetians as bones…) Occasionally, there’s faulty equipment. But always, at some time in a product’s life, there’s wear and tear, especially if it cops the afternoon sun. (Because the sun ages us all!) If the blind, awning or curtain came from Bradley’s originally we’ll give repairing it a red-hot go, but if it’s not from our store, we can’t help, because we’re not a repair company. Verticals and venetians are close-toimpossible to repair—there’s a lot of weight drawing in and out of one small plastic part at least a couple of
We understand, however, that there needs to be a mental adjustment to the changes for the community. Without boring you with technical stuff, a reduction in the speed limit to 80 km/h from the freeway exit to South Road increases your travel time by less than 30 seconds (27 seconds to be precise). The driver of an average family car travelling at 80km/h has a typical reaction distance of 33 metres and a braking distance of 36 metres, making an overall stopping distance of 69 metres. At an increase of 10 km/h, these figures move to a reaction distance of 38 metres, braking distance of 45 metres, with an overall total stopping distance of 83 metres, which is a difference of 14 metres. On a wet road this jumps substantially to an overall distance of 85 metres at 80 km/h and 103 metres at 90 km/h. Over the years, there have been some significant collisions on this stretch of road, though the freeway has certainly helped in some respects. However, with the amount of wildlife that uses this corridor, fallen trees/ branches and a fairly consistent wet
road surface for a good part of the year, a reduction in stopping/reaction distance should have a significant improvement on your safety and damage to your cars, and lessen the impact or occurrence of animal strikes without extending your travel time significantly. Finally, we had a visit from a local daycare centre, where I answered a number of questions from our younger community about what a police officer does within the community and in our workplace. Easter is not far away, and Woodend police will be expected to be out and about patrolling, to ensure community safety. SUBMITTED BY DAVID ARNOLD, SERGEANT WOODEND POLICE STATION

times a day. (Gravity catches up with products.) And these parts are hard to get. Tracks and rods are simpler, thus easier to repair. Over the years, we’ve discovered two must-have items to have in your repair kit: 1. Alcohol-free wipes to get marks off (test in a discreet corner to see if the fabric can handle it) 2. Silicon spray for rods and tracks (make sure it’s food grade, otherwise it makes things stickier). In any case, there are specialist blind, awning and curtain repairers out there. An internet search finds them pretty quickly as well as a number of DIY videos involving blind cord and tracks and not as much swearing as you might think! Overall, curtains, blinds and awnings are a lot like tyres. They get a lot of use so sometimes we just have to say, ‘Thank you and goodbye’…

The Good Guide
Introduction Vintage is underway in the region, with Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir amongst the first varieties to be picked. With it, highly likely later-ripening varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon will still be on the vine, given the long and generally cold growing season that 2021 has provided. The reviews this month come from an icon of the region in Bindi wines, as one of the best value blanc de blanc you will find.
2014 North Wine Contrefort Cuvee Louis Cremant A wine from a stellar vintage that continues to develop in the bottle. A light yellow to gold in colour, with balanced aromatics of citrus, quince and some faint flint/nougat notes. There is an alluring structure to this wine; it is made to cellar, which is the hallmark of vintage sparkling wines, with tightly-bound citrus holding court, richer stone fruits and almond meal notes there but playing a background role developing. The finish is long and citrus-dominant with richer leesinduced characters providing subtle generosity. Rating: 93 | Price: $40 | When to Drink: 2021 - 2025
2017 Bindi Original Vineyard Pinot Noir
As the name suggests, the grapes that go into this wine come from the Original Vineyard which was planted in 1988. The wine is only ever made in small quantities and sees almost 18 months in oak, of which 25% is new. This is a benchmark example of Macedon Ranges, with a purity of fruit and suppleness, whilst also having a profile of tannin and acid that gives dimension as a young wine and underwrites significant development potential. The nose sees a mix of red and black cherry set against a dusting of spice and earth; the palate balances fruit and savoury impact, with a peacock’s tail of flavour that is centred on dark cherry. The finish is long and complex. One to leave for a decade if you have some. Rating: 96 | Price: $85 | When to Drink: 2021 - 2031 SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ECKEL

Kyneton Health’s frontline workers receive COVID vaccine Sixty high-risk frontline staff at Central Highlands Rural Health’s Kyneton campus were amongst the first in the region to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The Pfizer vaccine was administered by the Loddon-Mallee’s mobile vaccination team and was given to staff working in Kyneton Health’s Respiratory Assessment Clinic, Urgent Care Centre and Acute Ward. Kyneton resident Mandy McGee is an Associate Nurse Unit Manager at Kyneton Health and was one of the first frontline workers to receive the vaccine: Mandy’s vaccine was administered by Endorsed Enrolled Nurse Trish Allen, who also received the Pfizer vaccination. “With today’s delivery of the vaccine to our high-risk frontline healthcare workers, we are one step closer to protecting our communities from COVID-19. “Whilst we continue to work with the Government on the rollout of the vaccine in our communities, it’s important we all stay alert and follow COVIDsafe guidelines. Mental Health Royal Commission final report welcomed Victorians experiencing mental illness will have access to better treatment, care and support closer to loved ones, under recommendations handed down by the final report from the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System. In February, the Commission delivered its final report, a blueprint for delivering a new mental health system for all Victorians and the state’s biggest social reform in a generation. Welcoming the report, Member for Macedon, MaryAnne Thomas said the government recognised the profound failures of the current system had sadly cost lives and committed to implement every one of the report’s recommendations. Australia’s first ever Royal Commission into Mental Health has provided the government and community with the plan to build a new mental health system from the ground up, and with expertise from those with lived experience.
While it will take time for the government to fully consider the report’s recommendations, work has already begun on implementing those that were laid out in the Royal Commission’s interim report. “This year we’ve lived through a global pandemic and all the stresses that have come with it. Now, more than ever, we need a new mental health system for all Victorians,” says Ms Thomas. The 2020-21 Victorian State Budget includes $868.6 million to focus on priority areas such as acute mental health beds, suicide prevention, Aboriginal social and emotional wellbeing, and support for the mental health workforce. ANZAC Day Services (Sunday 25th April 2021)
An update from the RSL The Woodend RSL Sub-Branch Committee and Members wish to thank the community for the support we received for our recent pop-up restaurant, which operated Friday nights through February and March. The Mexican cuisine brought something new and fresh to the RSL Club. Jane Niall and her team did an excellent job with the meals and our talented bar staff did a fantastic job matching Jane’s menu with suitable cocktails and drinks. We are closed for Easter; however, please keep an eye out as we hope to have another pop-up cuisine experience soon. In the meantime, we welcome you to visit for a drink from 5pm to 7pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The Woodend RSL is a great place to stay in touch and enjoy the relaxed environment to catchup with family and friends. Everyone is welcome.
In the interests of public health, due to the ongoing pandemic risk, there are restrictions throughout Australia and New Zealand on gatherings and marches to commemorate ANZAC Day. We encourage everyone to do a personal driveway dawn service to commemorate those that have gone before us and made the ultimate sacrifice. Please contact relatives and friends who have served and offer them companionship on this day when they remember lost mates and colleagues. There will be a small COVID-safe dawn service at 0530, at the Woodend RSL Sub-Branch. At the time of writing, we were in discussion with authorities on how this will be done within the COVIDSafe guidelines. More detail on this will be forthcoming closer to the date. Our main service will be at 12:30pm, at the front of the RSL. We ask veterans and ex-service people to form up at 1215 on the nature strip
in Schaw Street, beside the RSL, for a short march to the front of the RSL, where a ceremony and wreath-laying will take place. After the ceremony, attendees will be invited into the RSL for a light snack and a hot or cold beverage. Our COVIDSafe plan will restrict numbers in the building on the day to 100 (at the time of writing) but there will be plenty of space in our enclosed area at the rear of the RSL to catchup with friends and share stories. On the day, we will also have a display from our museum, highlighting war service by our local community members. This year is also the 100-year Anniversary of the RAAF. We need to give recognition on the day to the Australians lost in the many conflicts when serving with the RAAF and the Australians who served with the RAF in the Battle of Britain. More detail on the services mentioned above will be available closer to ANZAC Day . SUBMITTED BY HOWARD BURVILL

New CFA Management Team
We recently held our delayed biennial elections for the various management positions in the brigade. We would normally have held the elections last May (to start positions in July 2020) but they were delayed due to COVID-19. The CFA recently decided to allow brigades to hold their elections with the new positions starting immediately and to last for 16 months. Mike Dornau was again elected Captain, 1st Lieutenant will be Steve Ritchie 2nd Lieutenant Malcolm Judd, 3rd Lieutenant Sue Hobbs and newly elected 4th Lieutenant Rob Marsh. Long-term Treasurer Steve Ritchie was returned, along with Secretary Annette van Huffel and Communications Officer Keith Mason. The other member of the BMT (Brigade Management Team) will be Member Support Stewart McKinnon. Other key positions were Community Safety Officer Sue Hobbs, Training Officer Rob Marsh, Equipment
Officer Malcolm Judd, FEM (Fire Equipment Maintenance) Manager Kate Daniel and OH&S Manager Gary Hobbs. Mike Dornau and Keith Mason were also voted as Group delegates with VFBV delegates being Brad Dean and Steve Rumble. Other key positions included Training Assistant Tim Duff, Equipment Assistant Patrick BradfieldSmith, Communications Assistant Ben Richardson, Community Safety Assistant Mike Selby, FEM Assistant Patrick Bradfield-Smith, OH&S Assistant Malcolm Judd and Member Support Assistant Nat Briggs. “It is great to see such a diversity of members taking up key roles in the brigade, especially some of our younger members,” said Captain Mike Dornau. “I think it is important that we spread the load as much as possible and give younger members the possibility to broaden their experience base to help the transition into senior roles in the future.” The next elections for Woodend CFA will hopefully be back to the normal cycle next year, and be held in May 2022.

The Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal collection will again be held on Good Friday The Woodend CFA will once again be collecting on behalf of the Royal Children’s Hospital on Good Friday April 2, after missing last year’s physical collection due to the virus. Woodend CFA volunteers will begin collecting at around 9am and will cover as much of the Woodend area as we possibly can during the day. The Hesket-Kerrie and Newham CFA brigades will also be collecting at the same time. The Macedon Ranges community is normally very generous, and we’re sure this will continue. If you are not going to be home on Good Friday, you can drop donations off at the CFA Stations on any Sunday morning, or visit the Woodend CFA Virtual Tin Shake www.virtualtinshake.com. au/fundraisers/Woodend.
Change your clock, change your smoke alarm battery
Sunday 4 April is the end of Daylight Saving, and at 3am, you need to move your clock back one hour. Along with changing your clock, it is the perfect time to also change your smoke alarm batteries. House fires occur more frequently in the cooler months, so it makes good sense to check your smoke alarm battery at the same time you change your clock. For further information, contact the Woodend CFA on 5427 2356 or visit the station in Urquhart Street. Follow us on Facebook, or you can visit our website: www. woodendcfa.org. Hello fellow gardeners.
Is your child due for their next round of vaccinations? Bring them to a free Council immunisation session with one of our highly qualified and experienced immunisation nurses. Our nurses have been providing vaccinations to children for many years, so you can relax knowing that your child is in good hands. Many parents dread subjecting their child to needles, but our nurses know exactly how to put both you and your child at ease and make the experience as quick and comfortable as possible. There’s no need to make an appointment, just drop in during the scheduled session time.

First 2021 performance for Young Voices of Macedon
Saturday 13 March saw the first performance of the year for a group from Young Voices of Macedon, who performed two half-hour sets at the Kyneton Community Market. The Vivo group entertained the audience with action songs and joined with the Cantabiles to sing Gary Galah. The older Cantabile group offered two sacred songs and two from the jazz cantata Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo, which will be performed in its entirety in September. Soloists were Josie Barnes, Orson Cox, Leah Karic and Amelia Clark. As two of our older boys are experiencing voice change, we organised a visit from Dr Geoffrey Cox, former Director of Music at St Patrick’s Cathedral and very experienced in dealing with voice change in adolescent boys. Following a lesson with Geoffrey, our boys are now cognisant of the changes taking place and are much more secure in pitching notes. With vocal parts appropriate to their range that we are providing, they are able to continue singing and do so with confidence in using their developing adult voice. Our next performance is on Sunday, 18 April at St Ambrose Church, Woodend. SUBMITTED BY JESSICA DEMARE

Let’s recycle right and keep Macedon Ranges beautiful
It’s been twelve months since the introduction of the four-bin service and residents have done an incredible job sorting things into the right bins! Since February 2020, using their new FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics) bins, residents have saved from landfill 8,492 tonnes of organic waste, which has been turned into nutrient-rich compost used on farms, parks and gardens across the state. This has resulted in a reduction of 24,967 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in greenhouse gas emissions compared to last year. This would provide enough electricity to power 4,227 houses for one year. Our new glass-only bins have saved 1,973 tonnes of glass from landfill, glass which has instead been used in Victorian roads and construction. FOGO will be rolled out to remaining townships and rural areas at the end of this financial year. Affected properties will receive a letter in the post regarding upcoming changes. While this is great news, we can all still do our part to reduce waste and recycle more.
Q: Can you guess what the top incorrect item in the recycling bin is? A: Bagged recycling. Please remember to put your recycling loose in the bin as bagged recycling could send a whole truckload to landfill! Learn more about what belongs in which bin and what else you can recycle at your local transfer station by visiting our A-Z guide of what goes where on our website mrsc.vic.gov.au/A-Zguide
Want to improve the health of your horse and your land? Macedon Ranges Shire Council and Melbourne Water are partnering to offer a $100 discount for horse owners to participate in an online equiculture course. Equiculture – short for equine permaculture – is a holistic horse property management program that promotes sustainable farm and pasture management techniques, designed with your horse’s welfare and natural behaviour in mind. The equiculture program is delivered digitally, with participants able to learn at their own pace. Fifteen modules teach participants all about healthy soil and pasture, managing weeds, mud and erosion, property design and layouts, as well as managing optimal equine health. “Riding horses recreationally or as part of farming practices is very common in the Macedon Ranges, and we know how important caring for the health of horses is for riders,” said Angela Hughes, Director Environment and Planning. “Rural landholders have regularly told us they want more opportunities to learn about land management and Council is pleased to support that through the equiculture program. Places in this discounted course are limited so contact us to secure your spot.” Completion of the Equiculture course can also be incorporated into the Pony Club Australia K or C* certificates. To get your discount code, contact Jason McAinch on 0455 210 436 or visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/sustainable-farming Places are limited so get in quick! Whole Town Garage Sale a success.
Woodend Neighbourhood House recently held its Whole Town Garage on 13 March, with a last-minute pivot, which saw the garage sales being brought in-house. Over 20 garage sales were relocated onsite inside the House and in the garden. The house was full and vibrant, it was so lovely to see people reconnecting. The weather gods blessed us with a beautiful morning, and it was a successful day for all. A huge thank you to Woodend Rotary and CWAWoodend Eves for supporting the event with their delicious Sones and BBQ.

Hello from your local CWA !!
Woodend! It’s been too long and so much has happened recently. Thanks to Woodend’s amazing local businesses Black Forest Tyre & Auto, Bourkies Bakehouse, Full Moon Saloon, New Leaves, Woodend Ice Cream Co. and Woodend Produce Store for putting up prizes for the inaugural Christmas Lights competition. In January, we joined forces with the Kyneton Twilighters Branch for a family fun night at the Kyneton Croquet Club. Many of us were brand new to croquet and the club members were very helpful in assisting us navigate the finer points of the game. Members from both Branches provided a delicious supper to share. The Central Highlands Group hosted an inspirational International Women’s Day event at the Victoria Hotel. The panel consisted of Professor Jenni Lightowlers, Rev Debra Saffrey-Collins and Jeni Kolkka; all three of whom are passionate about getting involved with their communities as leaders, mentors and employers. Finally, what would we be without our fabulous members? We’ve grown so much over the last year that we’ve outgrown our first home. While we were very sad to say goodbye to the Scouts’ wonderful Log Cabin on Forest Street, we’re looking forward to taking up residence at the Neighbourhood House. To keep in touch, follow us on Facebook and Instagram, send us an email at cwawoodendeves@gmail. com, or come along to one of our meetings. We can also be found at the monthly Woodend Lions Market, we’re the ones on the sausage sizzle! Come and say ‘hi’, we’d love to meet you.
Woodend Landcare - April working bee Many Woodend residents have admired the wildflowers growing along Quarry Rd Rail Reserve over spring. Now it is time to undertake some woody weed removal and help this important site thrive. Woodend Landcare's April working bee will be held at the Quarry Rd Rail Reserve on Sunday 18 April from 9 am until 12 pm. We will focus on removing gorse and broom, which are a persistent problem along the reserve requiring regular attention. We will start by checking over the best wildflower area near the intersection of Washington Lane and Quarry Rd and will then progress along the reserve in an easterly direction. Mark this date in your diary, and come find out where the best wildflowers will appear in spring and summer. Bring gloves, protective eyewear and secateurs, and wear full-length old clothes and sturdy footwear. The best place to park is along Washington Lane. Please register your interest at woodendlandcare@gmail.com and you will be notified of any possible changes due to Covid restrictions or weather. Residents living nearby, and any newcomers to Landcare are very welcome to join in for some quite easy hands-on work, to enjoy our usual high quality morning tea, and to help preserve this special native plant diversity found so close to the centre of our town. U3A Kyneton is kicking up their heels U3A Kyneton is excited to announce an International Folk Dancing course. The introductory session will be on 29 March 2021 at 10.00a.m. in the Red Brick Hall, Yaldwyn St West, Kyneton. It is never too late to enrol in the many and diverse courses and activities this dynamic and proactive group offers. The bushwalkers trek a different route every second week, exploring the many walks in the district, often routes not known to many of us. Dog walkers are out and about every Thursday and the first of two historical tours of Kyneton commences on 16th March. All French classes are now full thanks to our devoted tutor Simone
Graham. A big “Merci” to Simone and Grist!! Tai Chi invigorates both body and soul, while many are learning to grow their own vegetables. The course in “First Australians” has given great insight into this topic. In the early 1890s, intrepid horse riders galloped across the paddocks of Woodend with hounds to hunt foxes with the Woodend Hunt Club. At first, the riders met at the Newham Hotel with the hounds and rode slowly past the school to Kennons’ paddock at the foot of Cutting Hill, from where they raced towards Hanging Rock and the hounds’ kennels in Woodend. In later years, the routes were varied to enable hunters to ride across many different farms.
Photo 506: Members of the Woodend Hunt Club with their horses and hounds probably, going on the attire, in the early 1940s. Local riders included Jack Rogerson, Jack Meagher, the Woods brothers, Alex McKenzie, Ted Daniel, Jack and Mena Peters, Nellie Gagiero, Jim and Tas Keating, the Kenneys and the Hayes. Photo 63: Members of the Woodend Hunt Club Professional jockeys were not allowed to join in the hunt, which was open to any amateur rider who could ride a horse over a fence without falling off. At one time, hounds were bred and kept by Mr Charles Peters at his property ‘Fairview’ and there were others at Woodend. Many excited spectators on horseback and in buggies watched the start of the hunt and then tried to keep up with the hunters and their hounds. Few injuries were reported in the local press, but sometimes the hunters had to repair damaged fences. At the end of the hunt, riders and grooms rubbed down their horses, the dogs were fed and bedded down in their kennels, and then everyone congregated at a hotel, often McKenzies, to relax and compare memories of another stimulating ride. The hunting season ran from June to September and ended with a celebratory dinner in October. During the year, there were other social events, such as a ball where the ladies showed off their finest dresses. In 1902, the Hunt Club considered winding up and being superseded by the Woodend Race Club, but it was not disbanded until 1943.

Macedon and Woodend sports on a Green Sport and good wicket Biodiversity The growing ranks of the Macedon and Woodend Cricket Clubs now have ‘smashing’ new cricket training facilities at their respective home grounds, made possible by a $149,000 investment from the Victorian Government. Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas joined Macedon Ranges Shire Councillors to officially launch the new practice cricket nets at Gilbert Gordon Oval in Woodend and Tony Clarke Reserve in Macedon. Cricket is as popular as ever at the home of the Macedon and Woodend cricket clubs, which have around 240 members between them . The new three-lane training wickets at both grounds replace previous training facilities that were ageing and struggling to keep up with the growing interest in cricket and local sport, especially from women and girls. “The new facilities at both these Macedon and Woodend grassroots sport hubs also open more opportunities for female participation,” said Ms Thomas. The new synthetic wickets come complete with mesh fence and an internal retractable net and rigging system, allowing the transformation of the three lanes at both venues into an open multipurpose space. At Tony Clarke Reserve, Ms Thomas also officially flicked the switch on bright new oval and netball/tennis court lighting, made possible by a $100,000 investment from the Victorian government. Along with the Macedon Cricket Club, the ground is also home to the Macedon Tennis Club and the Macedon Football Netball Club. The new lighting opens up the oval and adjacent courts to more twilight training, especially over the winter months; it provides better lighting for more use of the oval; and is competition-standard, allowing for night games. Ms Mary-Anne Thomas acknowledged the Macedon Ranges Shire Council and the clubs for their commitment and financial contribution to the respective projects. For those of you who read this Green Sport article last month, I hope you have been on an #emubob, perhaps as part of Clean Up Australia Day. Every day the world of sport and recreation intersects with the natural environment, and this can have a negative effect on biodiversity, yet also provide opportunities for nature-based solutions to foster biodiversity. Sports precincts and their communities can install nesting boxes, plant habitats that become havens for pollinators, and support wildlife corridors, wetlands and bird sanctuaries. To find out more about sport and biodiversity, check out the “Sport and Biodiversity” report , available from the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources website, www.iucn.org To find out more about climate change and sport in Australia, check out the Climate Councils report, “Game, Set, Match: Calling Time on Climate Action” on www. climatecouncil.org.au, or the Victorian Government and Sports Environment Alliance resource, “Future Proofing Community Sport and Recreation Facilities” www. noplanetnoplay.org. The 2021 round of MRSC Community Grants opened on March 27. When you head off to your next training, match, exercise session or round of golf, stop and observe, consider how you could foster biodiversity at your place of play. Perhaps a new partnership or grant could help. Next time I will look at water quality and security and its impact on the future of sport. Need help with green sport ideas big or small? Contact me at annabel.greensports@gmail.com or @a_bella_life. Let’s put sport and nature on the same team. SUBMITTED BY ANNABEL SIDES

The pennant season finals have begun.
The Central Highlands Pennant Finals series is now well underway, with Saturday and Tuesday Division 3 teams both making the finals. Defending champions, the Tuesday Division 3 team finished in second place and played top side Diggers Rest in the first final, losing by just 4 points (32-36). They then played Macedon in the preliminary final and won 38-34, to earn the return match against Diggers Rest in the Grand Final, where, after taking an early lead, they went down by just 4 shots, for a score of 37-33.

in third place and won their elimination final against Romsey by 9 points 67-58. They then played Gisborne in the preliminary final, but the match was washed out and delayed. We will report on the outcome in the next edition. The Saturday Division 2 team put in a strong season and just missed the Top 4 in a last game battle for the position, missing by a mere 5 points. Our Tuesday Division 1 endured a tough season and was never really in finals contention, despite some strong performances during the season. Congratulations to all players during the season and through the finals.
O’Brien pairs
On Sunday March 14, we held the annual O'Brien Pairs Tournament in honour of club stalwarts Frank and Laurie O'Brien. Ten pairs actually had to battle with some cool weather, but managed to finish the event in lovely sunshine.

Learning Beyond the Classroom After the months of restricted interaction and activity of 2020, experiences beyond the home have been appreciated more than ever. As Term 1 comes to an end, a broad range of activities has been enjoyed by students at Sacred Heart College, both in and outside the classroom, each one providing opportunities for the development of friendships, knowledge and skill. The Year 7 Camp in Kinglake is one of many activities aimed at assisting the gradual transition for students moving from Grade 6 to the first year of secondary school. A three night stay includes a mixture of team building activities and events that allow students to challenge themselves physically, while getting to know each other and work together in a team environment.
The Year 8 Surf Camp is a weeklong experience in Anglesea, offering students the opportunity to link educational skills with life skills and develop problem solving, wellbeing and leadership skills. This handson camp offers activities including surfing, initiative challenge, high ropes course, overnight hike and raft making.
Our VCE Outdoor and Environmental Studies students have also participated in a Dive Camp on Port Phillip Bay. This 3-day camp allows students to gain skills and a fuller understanding of the outdoor environment by participating in a variety of outdoor activities, including: sea kayaking, mountain bike ride and a dive in the Bay after a practice pool dive.
March, eight Year 12 students, and one former student from the Class of 2020, chose to unite as a school team to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave. Each student had their own connection to the cause, raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation and undertook the shave. To date they have raised over $9,000! To further support the team’s efforts search for the ‘Pokemon Bald Team’ on www. worldsgreatestshave.com
