Halloween Celebrations
Traditionally, cemeteries are cleaned up and tended on 31st of October, the eve of All Saints Day. Based on a Celtic and Scandinavian tradition of acknowledging the end of the growth and harvesting season and to acknowledge and respect those that are not with the family during the long winter. In Scandinavia spruce branches are placed on the garden beds to protect them from the heavy rain of November and the snow that will fall and lay on them for the 3-4 months from December. Woodend Rotary are embracing this traditional aspect of Halloween by conducting our annual clean-up of the Woodend Cemetery on this day, in conjunction with Macedon Ranges Venturers and Scouts and Woodend Youthspace. The trick or treat system of modern Halloween has replaced the original intent described above and become common in all parts of the world.
