Holgate Brewery expansion opens its doors Woodend’s internationally renowned, family-owned Holgate beer brand will welcome 60,000 additional visitors to the region every year and employ up to 15 new workers. Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas joined Paul and Natasha Holgate at the official opening of the new Holgate Brewhouse Visitor Discovery Centre and Taproom to the public – made possible by a $1.5 million grant through the Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund. “We’re so proud to back this local business to expand and create new jobs in Woodend, while supporting the local tourism industry and attracting new visitors to our beautiful region,” said Mary-Anne Thomas. The new Visitor Discovery Centre is set to stimulate the local economy by $1.87 million in visitor spending each year, with a new tasting tap room, views of the brewery, reception for the adjoining hotel and an interactive visitor experience showcasing the history of Holgate Brewhouse. The new centre comes after upgrades to the brewery including a world-class German-made brewing system and equipment - a first in the Australian craft beer brewing sector, increasing the brewery’s capacity and improving consistency across its products. The project is the second stage of a three-part vision for the brewhouse’s growth, which also includes a Macedon Ranges Wine Hub and upcoming Calder Corridor Craft Beer Trail tourism experience. The Holgate Brewhouse is the brainchild of Paul and Natasha Holgate, who had the idea for their business while

on holiday in the USA when they came across the small craft brewing industry and were inspired to start their own. Two years later, they began operating from their backyard in Woodend and selling craft beer, before venturing into hospitality and tourism in 2002, when they took over the town’s historic Commercial Hotel. Constructed in 1896, the building has been Holgate Brewhouse’s home ever since. Council to introduce glass kerbside collection in 2020 Macedon Ranges Shire Council will introduce a separate, glass-only bin collection service next year. The 140 litre bins, which will be collected every four weeks and have purple lids, will be delivered to approximately 20,000 households in February 2020. This decision comes after Macedon Ranges Shire Council was one of 33 Victorian councils affected by the closure of recycling processor SKM Recycling earlier this year. In the meantime, residents have been asked to remove glass from household recycling bins. A new recycling processor has been identified but only if glass is removed from the recycling bins with the yellow lid. Shards and small pieces of glass can become embedded in paper and cardboard in recycling bins and contaminate the other recyclables. Glass-only bins have been installed in public places
across the shire to assist residents in removing glass from their recycling bins. When the new service commences, the glass collected in the public place bins and the glass-only kerbside bins will be processed and reused in construction materials. Until the new service begins next year, residents are asked to continue to keep glass out of their recycling bins and to use the public place glass-only bins. For a list of locations, see mrsc.vic.gov.au/glass Council advises that as a last resort, glass can be placed in the red-lidded, general rubbish bins. Our community lost one of our colourful and much-loved citizens recently, when Joanna Casey, née Sheil, passed away on October 25. Joanna was a woman of great intellect and keen insight. She was always interested in what was happening around her, and was never afraid to express her views, particularly when it came to fairness and injustice. She fought relentlessly for the ‘underdog’ with compassion, wit and a steely resolve, and is remembered for her huge, kind, caring, generous heart. From an early age, she developed a strong social conscience and community spirit, and was active in local affairs until her death. Joanna grew up on Mt Macedon and moved to Melbourne to study at Toorak Teacher’s College. She is remembered by her friends there as an extroverted, boisterous, fearless and fun loving 17 year old. After several years’ teaching and raising her family in Melbourne, she returned to Mt Macedon in 1977 with her husband, Paul, and three sons, Simon, Adam and Jonathan. Joanna was appointed as the first female principal at the Malmsbury Youth Detention Centre School and was passionate about her work. It was well known that some of her more unorthodox methods changed the lives of many adolescent males – providing them with opportunities to develop the skills and attitudes to keep them out of trouble. Her colleagues recall that as the principal, Joanna provided staff with amazing support and inspiration, and was widely respected – even though one of them later described her as a “new-age feminist, get-out-of-my-way power woman”! She had a big personality, humour, opinions, voice and stature. Nobody could put one over her! In the 1990s, Joanna worked at Cobaw, where she coordinated the Homelessness program. She was a fearless advocate for the disadvantaged and worked hard to raise community awareness of homelessness and family violence to bring about change. Joanna saw the potential in the people she supported and provided them with opportunities and encouragement. According to those who were involved with the Shire Council, Joanna was a keen Council observer and an active participant, who valued the opportunity to have input on issues that she was passionate about. Whether it was through the Shire’s Housing Advisory Committee, which linked to her professional work with Cobaw Community Health, the Disability Advisory Committee, or various aging forums and networks, Joanna was a practical and considered advocate who linked real life and its problems to the work of Council and other agencies. Always respectful and willing to engage with officers or councillors, nevertheless she was persistent and tenacious in pursuing a logical, commonsense response. Many current and
past council officers valued her input, wisdom, humour and contributions to her community. Joanna loved politics and engaged with it at all levels to campaign for change. Joanna joined the Australian Labor Party in 1964. She was a strong Labor supporter and advocate and represented the Labor Party as a councillor with the now amalgamated City of South Melbourne. After decades of service, Joanna was granted Life Membership of the party. She manned the polling booths at every state and federal election up until 2018. Due to ill health, Joanna was unable to participate in the campaign for the re-election of the State MP for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas, but she celebrated in her own way with a glass or two with ice. During the 2019 federal election campaign, Joanna insisted on ‘walking her block’ and letterboxing for her local federal MP, Lisa Chesters. The current president of the Woodend Labor Party branch, which Joanna co-founded, Pauline Brown, remembers Joanna’s unrelenting support and mentoring over many years. Joanna encouraged women of all ages to participate, champion causes and seek office, assisting many in their professional endeavours. She was really chuffed to see so many women representing her community at local, state and federal levels. Apart from her involvement with social issues, Joanna was a volunteer at the Visitor Information Centre for many years; a member of U3A; and a founding member of the Cambodian Nights, which raises funds for an orphanage in Siem Reap. She was a generous and fun-loving host and enjoyed participating in all things social, in the company of her many friends. She is remembered as a loyal and caring person and will be very much missed. Sadly, Joanna’s husband, Paul died of cancer in 2002 close to retirement age, denying her the privilege of growing old with him. Joanna Casey is survived by her three sons and seven grandchildren. No guarantee of water supply in bushfires, warns Western Water
Western Water is warning customers in the Macedon Ranges that they should not rely on their mains water supply if there is a bushfire in the region. “Water pressure, water quality and water supply cannot be guaranteed in the event of a bushfire,” said Graham Holt, Western Water’s General Manager, Customer, Community Relations and Operations. Western Water also says large bushfires in the region could affect the quality of its drinking water. “During and after a serious bushfire we recommend you boil your drinking water until Western Water confirms it is safe to drink,” Mr Holt said. Western Water works closely with the CFA during the bushfire season and has prepared staff and networks for extreme conditions. Mr Holt says residents can also help the community to be prepared for fire season by ‘adopting’ a fire hydrant. “You can help by keeping fire hydrants near your home free of debris and vegetation,” he says. If residents think a hydrant needs maintenance, they can contact Western Water by calling 1300 650 422 or by completing an online form at their website. Customers can go to westernwater.com.au to record their mobile phone number on our system. This allows Western Water to provide customers with direct updates via SMS if there is an issue with the water supply. Residents are advised to plan ahead and consult their local CFA for information on preparing for a bushfire and recommendations for an independent water supply. How well do you know fire? Get ready before it’s too late A hard-hitting new advertising campaign has been launched that will reinforce the deadly risks of fire and the importance of planning and preparing for the fire season, as the state heads towards a long, hot and dry season. The ‘How well do you know fire?’ campaign will run across television, radio, print, digital, social, and outdoor media to highlight the deadly risk fire poses and the importance of planning and preparing for the season. Authorities warn that radiant heat from a bushfire can kill you from 300 metres away, and a single ember can start a new fire from 40 kilometres away. These facts will be combined with confronting imagery to ensure Victorians are prepared this bushfire
season, after research found many people were becoming complacent about their personal bushfire risk. Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas welcomed Victoria’s bold new approach to fire preparedness – one of the largest fire campaigns in the state’s history. “We know that we can’t afford to be complacent across the Macedon Ranges and Daylesford regions. Planning and preparing for your fire risk can be the difference between life and death.” Available emergency management staff and agencies are ready to respond to incidents across the state, including thousands of volunteer and career firefighters from across all agencies, as well as a record fleet of 50 aircraft,
which will hit the skies to help fight fires and keep communities safe. Victorians and communities need to start preparing themselves for the fire season – visit www.vic.gov.au/ knowfire to plan and prepare. “Share the message with friends and family, and make sure you are ready for fire this summer,” Ms Thomas said. “Our firefighters can’t do this alone. I would like to start by thanking all the volunteers in the CFA brigades in our shire for their dedication and commitment travelling to New South Wales and supporting the communities during the devastating fires. We are also feeling the warmer weather conditions here in our shire now, and in our recent Shire Life edition we have some important information and reminders about preparation and responses. Please talk about this with your family, friends and neighbours at home. Thank you all for your support over the last year in my role as mayor. For the many invitations to share in your events, to hear your stories, and for keeping me informed about all the work community groups are doing, as well as allowing me to talk about the work of Council. I have enjoyed every minute. I would like to thank my fellow councillors for electing me to continue for another year – a very important final fourth year of our council term. It is a great privilege and honour to have this opportunity, and we will continue to move forward, working together on our strategic vision and priorities, and continuing to advocate for and support our community on important issues. Congratulation to Councillor Mandi Mees who was reelected as Deputy Mayor. You are probably aware that progress is being made with funding secured for a Masterplan and Business Case for the Woodend Community Precinct, so keep your eyes and ears open for opportunities to provide input into what this area means to you, and ideas for its future role for the town, shire and region. This is a significant opportunity for Woodend, so please be part of it. I would like to welcome the new director for Assets and Operations, Mr Shane Walden, who has a wealth of experience and has joined the Executive team at Council. Council is very pleased that the results of the trial glassonly household collection bins in Lancefield have been so successful and has endorsed plans to introduce this separate glass-only bin collection service next year. We hope this will be at the same time as the Food Organic and Garden Organic (FOGO ) service in February 2020, and residents will be contacted. A local olive oil has recently been awarded Gold Medals in the Australian Food Awards and in the Australian International Olive Awards. The oil is produced from an olive grove established by Michael and Elizabeth Peck in 1999 on red and grey soils, by a bend of the Campaspe River at Woodend. and processed by master oil maker, Tony Siciliano, who uses the age-old Affiorato processing method. This delicate Italian method removes the pips early in the process without crushing them; the oil is then “floated” off the vegetal water. This cold, gentle process produces a pure, extremely high-quality oil that is keenly sought-after by olive oil connoisseurs. Help the Shire become more age-friendly

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is developing a Positive Ageing Plan and would like residents’ thoughts and ideas on how to make the shire more age-friendly. The Positive Ageing Plan 2020-2025 will consider many elements that contribute to healthy ageing, such as living independently for longer, remaining socially connected and having access to information, services and agefriendly public spaces. Director, Community Wellbeing, Karen Stevens said the plan would be developed with input from the whole community, but older residents were especially encouraged to participate as they grow older in the Macedon Ranges. “It is essential that we hear from older people so the plan reflects their needs and priorities,” she said. “We want your ideas about how we can support you, encourage your continued involvement in the community and be an age-friendly shire.” she said. There will be a range of opportunities to have your say, including through workshops, a survey (online and in print), face-to-face interviews and group meetings. Community effort restores Woodend Primary School’s Community Children’s Garden Woodend Primary School’s Community Children’s Garden is having a makeover, thanks to generous locals and a Junior Landcare Biodiversity Grant. Originally constructed ten years ago by a group of dedicated parents, and maintained by teacher, Barb Lonsdale, the garden became overgrown after Barb’s retirement. Now it is having a facelift. Sheets of black plastic, repurposed newspaper weed-mat and woodchips from school landscape works have been used to tackle the weeds. The restored garden includes sensory garden beds, fruit and berry areas, new raised vegie beds, an indigenous garden and a log-seat outdoor classroom. The Landcare Grant has covered some costs, but the labour and many items have been donated by locals. The Woodend Men’s Shed kindly created new raised vegie beds from materials donated by Sunbury Bunnings. Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group helped prepare the site for the new garden beds. Grade 6 Environment Leaders, who assist in the garden each week, designed the outdoor classroom using donated logs and used brick paving. Herbs, vegies and seeds have been provided by parents, and members of the Facebook group ‘Woodend Garden Club’. An Indigenous Plant Garden borders the vegie patch and provides habitat for native birds, insects and lizards, who help to pollinate vegetables and eat garden pests. An initiative of WPS parent, and volunteer Gardening Facilitator and Woodend Landcare member, Nicole Middleton, each species in the native garden has an informative label, making the garden an educational self-guided tour of Woodend vegetation. Plants for the indigenous garden were grown by Newham Landcare, and Woodend Landcare donated plant guards and stakes, and helped volunteer parents teach planting techniques to the children. Each week, students are in the Community Garden learning about the environment, permaculture gardening and trying tasty fresh foods through lunchtime Garden Club, the Environment Leader program and classroom learning initiatives. Woodend Primary School would like to express gratitude to all the benevolent parents, locals and community groups who have helped to once again provide a productive and educational garden space for children at the school. Macedon Ranges Shire Council is urging the community to call out disrespectful behaviour that fuels violence against women during the upcoming 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Council is taking part in a state-wide campaign called “Respect Women: Call It Out”, during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence from 25 November to 10 December. The dates are significant, as 25 November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and 10 December is Human Rights Day. The Call It Out campaign aims to raise awareness that bystanders can have a powerful role in helping change behaviour. Everyone has a role to play in calling out disrespect towards women – we shouldn’t wait for somebody else to do the right thing. The campaign is supported by the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) and funded by Respect Victoria. During the sixteen days of activism, Council will run a social media campaign encouraging residents to share their stories on how they call out disrespectful behaviour. Residents can comment on these social media posts or post a comment on a display board at Kyneton Sports and Aquatic Centre. Those who post stories either online or in person will have a chance to win prizes, including a six- month gym/swim membership at Kyneton or Gisborne Aquatic Centre, a sixmonth pass to Hanging Rock or two tickets to see comedian Ross Noble at the Kyneton Town Hall. Resonance String Orchestra connects the community through music
Macedon Ranges-based not-for-profit community choir Resonance String Orchestra will be performing a concert “You're the Voice“, all about community connection and cohesiveness, in Kyneton on Monday 2 December. Nine local and undiscovered vocal talents and a backing band comprising of some of the region's musicians will be performing with Resonance String Orchestra. Contestants will perform international hits, as they compete to win the attention of the event's judges, Opera Australia's Tiffany Speight and local music education specialist, Joseph Bromley. The audience will also vote for their favourite performer on the night. The concert is being staged with the support of the Macedon Ranges Shire Council and the Commonwealth Home Support Program. which aims to provide experiences for social and community connection for residents aged 55 and over in Macedon Ranges Shire. Queen Scout Award Success 2nd Woodend Scouts last month celebrated the achievement of three of its Venturer members – Richard Jefferson, Lachlan Sutton and James Inkster from Woodend, under the leadership of Dale Sutton – in attaining the highest youth award achievable in the Scouting movement in the Commonwealth, the Queen’s Scout Award. The award focuses on achieving challenges from several areas, including community involvement, personal growth, leadership development and adventurous activities. In the seven years since its commencement, 2nd Woodend Scouts has seen seven of its members complete the award. The ceremony was held in Jackson Hall at Braemar College, with local council dignitaries, fellow members, Scout Association Commissioners, and family members in attendance. 2nd Woodend Scouts congratulates these fine gentlemen on this wonderful achievement, and we wish them every success in the coming months with their exams, and future endeavours. Stars in our Eyes’ Celebrating International Volunteer Day To mark International Volunteer Day, local volunteer resource centre, Volunteer Central Vic are hosting an event to recognise the work of volunteers in the community. ‘Stars in our Eyes’ will bring together local organisations and volunteers, in celebration of the contribution that volunteering can make to the community. “The Macedon Ranges has one of the highest volunteering rates in the state,” says Lisa Richards, Volunteer Central Vic’s Coordinator. “Volunteering is a great way to meet new friends, learn new skills, increase self-confidence, as well as develop stronger connections with your community.” Guest speakers include Jackie Nieuwenhuizen from Read Victoria, Kerryn Wildenburg from Kyneton Caring Community and Dawn Bamforth from Cobaw Community Health’s Social Support program. They will talk about what volunteers do in

Monthly Social for LGBTIQ+ Adults Cobaw’s new Country LGBTIQ+ Inclusion Program (CLIP), is encouraging LGBTIQ+ adults to get together
for a cuppa and chat on a monthly basis. Meeting on the third Thursday of every month, Social@ will offer a regular opportunity for members of the LGBTIQ+ community across the Macedon Ranges to get together and make new connections. “Living in a rural area, LGBTIQ+ people are at higher risk of social isolation,” says Belinda Brain, CLIP Coordinator. “This can have an impact on a person’s mental and physical health, as they are often left with little knowledge of services and groups that are LGBTIQ+ inclusive”. Cobaw’s CLIP program was started earlier this year, following an increased acknowledgement of the need for adult LGBTIQ+ support in the region. Social@ is one of the first initiatives to be started up by the program, and there are hopes that it will grow each month and more opportunities for people to connect will come out of the monthly gatherings. 2018 Jasper Hill Georgia’s Paddock Jasper Hill is one of the pioneers of the Heathcote wine region and in the upper echelon of Victorian Shiraz. The vineyard itself has been organically farmed since its inception and is unirrigated. The attention to detail in the vineyard, combined with precise winemaking results in a wine of concentration and balance, whilst being a long term cellaring proposition. The wine is a deep but youthful red, with a nose packed with dark plum, raspberry and a touch of blackberry fruit; oak lifts the nose with a web of baking spice. The wine is 15.5% in alcohol, but you can’t tell. The weight of fruit and tannin are in equilibrium, and generosity of oak has the wine flowing from start to finish. A wine that is sure to impress. 2016 Gisborne Peak Riesling This is a wine that continues to get better with age; the nose is framed by candied lime and lemon and is just starting to take on more aged characteristics. 30th Anniversary of Brooke St Medical Centre, On 1st November 2019, the staff and owners of Brooke St Medical Centre (BSMC) quietly celebrated 30 years since the commencement of the medical practice. The original BSMC began in a small converted house at 5 Brooke St (now the site of a vet practice) as an extension of a long-term Kyneton-based practice, owned over the preceding decades by a succession of solo GPs (the late Drs Joe Connellan, Michael Bergin and Dr George Waters). Dr Peter Ferguson was mainly based in Woodend, working with one receptionist and, at that time, no practice nurse. From day one, the demand for quality GP care was high, and the practice quickly outgrew these premises. Drs Alison Killoh and Richard Bills joined BSMC in 1990 and 1991, respectively. Even in the early days, allied health services were co-located at the clinic, for example, physiotherapy and chiropractic. A six consulting room, purpose-built medical centre was built on the current site, with a brief interlude where the surgery shifted into a temporary demountable building – during which time the surgery building flooded in November 1992! BSMC was one of the first medical centres to employ a practice nurse in a dedicated treatment room area.
Since its inception, the Brooke Street Medical Centre has continued to grow to meet the needs of the local community and, at the end of 2001, opened a new wing of the building, which housed a larger treatment room, larger waiting and office spaces, an imaging facility and more consulting rooms. February 2012 saw the opening of yet another extension of the premises to enable the practice to house its own rehabilitation gym (“Fit for Life”), allied health wing, upstairs staff conferencing area, downstairs student teaching wing, five-bay treatment room with separate procedure rooms and emergency resuscitation area, onsite radiology and pathology and extra consulting space for visiting specialists.
The Brooke Street Medical Centre has consistently achieved accreditation as an undergraduate and postgraduate teaching practice and RACGP accreditation. BSMC has trained scores of medical students and dozens of medical registrars, as well as countless nursing and allied health students. Brooke St Medical Centre now employs over fifty staff, comprising eighteen general practitioners, nine treatment room nurses, twelve receptionists, five administration support staff, five allied health staff (including a physiotherapist, exercise physiologist, diabetes nurse educator, dietitian, asthma educator / QUIT Nurse), three psychologists, two chronic disease nurses, a travel health nurse consultant and a community mental health nurse. Visiting services now include a cardiologist, a urologist, a dermatologist, an orthopaedic surgeon, a geriatrician, a psychiatrist, a podiatrist and an audiologist. Plans are well advanced at BSMC for two innovative programs in early 2020: restarting the previous successful Pain Clinic program (including small group education sessions and individualised allied health services, incorporating mind and body activities) and a new program called “Yes to Healthy Life”, for people at risk of developing diabetes. Thank you to all who contributed to our successful Poppy Appeal, which raised nearly $6000 – all of which goes towards the welfare of veterans. The generosity of the community is very much appreciated. We also provided every primary school child in the district with a red poppy to wear on Remembrance Day. The local schools sent representatives who were involved in the ceremony held at the RSL on the day. About 100 people attended the solemn ceremony, including the mayor Cr Janet Pearce, and representatives from our state and federal governments.

After being involved in several off-grid installations, it quickly became apparent that existing solutions need to be designed from scratch every time, leading to unknown costs and timeframes. The cost of arranging skilled labour in remote areas is one of the biggest problems, with poorly-engineered solutions a close second. The concept that Lightbox Solar came up with was a standardised module that contained the solar panels, batteries and associated electronics within a single package. These modules could be completely built and tested in a factory and then delivered to the site. Multiple units could be chained together if required, with minimal work required on-site to complete the installation. After nearly 18 months research and development, Lightbox Solar has released their first system. A single module is able to supply a shed, remote machinery, a pump or a small home. More modules or a generator can be added to supply additional demand and they can be easily relocated with a forklift. Works to start on Woodend Kindergarten playground Works will start in the coming weeks on a development to improve the playground at Woodend Kindergarten. The $508,000 project will see an upgrade of the outdoor play space, thanks to contributions from the Woodend Kindergarten Committee, Macedon Ranges Shire Council and the Victorian Government. The project team, including parents and educators, have been involved in developing the detailed designs for the playground, which aim to deliver an inclusive space where children can explore, play and investigate with the use of natural elements. Preliminary works will start in term four this year, with construction likely to start over the Christmas holidays and continue into term one next year. Council will aim to minimise disruption to children and families accessing the service during the works. It is anticipated the upgrade works will be completed by April 2020.
Production year winds up for 2019 Mount Players’ final production, The Graduate, was a wonderful success with a near sell out season. Audiences across the board loved it and we have had tremendous feedback on the standard of our actors and the creative set. Thanks to director, Robert Wallace for bringing this iconic play to life on our stage. This year the Youth Theatre will be staging their productions across two weekends. On 6/7/8 Dec “The Trap” by Stephen Gregg will be performed by our 16 – 21 years group and on 13/14/15 Dec “The Golden Medallion” by Keith Passmore will be performed by our 10 – 15 years group. Combining their talents in “The Golden Medallion”. each play will be double cast, with each cast performing 2 shows. These shows are a fantastic opportunity to come along as a family and enjoy the super talent our youth theatre boasts. The first production for 2020, Switzerland, by Australian playwright, Joanna Murray-Smith, has been cast and is already in rehearsal. This two-handed metaphysical thriller set in the Swiss Alps at the secluded home of author, Patricia Highsmith, opens on 28 February. The Fire Danger period has started In the Macedon Ranges! The CFA has commenced its Fire Ready Victoria Campaign, sharing vital messages about the dangers of bushfires. The aim is to reach residents, especially those in high risk areas (Woodend is in the Top 52) and ensure they have ample information from which to make an informed decision in the event of a bush or grassfire.
Any burn offs will require a Council Permit
The Fire Danger Period in the Macedon Ranges commenced on Monday November 25, and you cannot undertake a burn of any shape or size without a permit. The Fire Danger Period is a long-term restriction, and due to last until the end of April. Under fire restrictions, a permit issued by the shire’s Municipal Fire Prevention Officer is required to burn off. Total Fire Bans are individual days of extreme weather conditions, where all burning is illegal, and serious restrictions are placed on the operating of machinery. The CFA has an excellent publication called “Can I or can’t I?”, which clearly spells out the distinctions between the Fire Danger Period and Total Fire Ban days. You can get a copy of the publication from your local CFA fire station or download it from the CFA website. Lighting a fire in the open without a permit is an offence and can result in a court appearance and a heavy fine, or even up to 12 months imprisonment. The CFA and Victoria Police have a Zero Tolerance policy for the lighting of fires both during the Fire Danger Period and Total Fire Ban days, and police will be called.

The Woodend Pony Club recently held their annual Dressage and Combined Training Day, at the Racecourse Reserve in Forest St. It was a successful day with over 400 people in attendance. Competitors came from all areas of the state to participate in the popular equestrian event, held in the heart of Woodend. The club volunteers did an exceptional job at coordinating the event and ensuring an enjoyable day was had by all. The Woodend Pony Club, which was founded in 1971, provides a welcoming and friendly environment for riders from the age of four upwards. The club, situated at the old Racecourse site, continues to offer 11 rally meetings a year, on the first Sunday of every month (excluding January). New member enquiries are welcome and more information can be found at www.woodendponyclub.org.au The Pony Club is pleased to be able to work alongside another critical youth organisation, in the 2nd Woodend Scouts Group, who share the club rooms. Some handy tips about chickens that have been shared with me over time Scaly legs - if your chickens (especially roosters) have scaly red legs, it is probably caused by a small mite that gets under the skin and irritates the chickens. These pests need to be suffocated. Use vaseline or spray cooking olive oil. Repeat until legs look good. Hot weather - keep a bag of cheap frozen vegetables to give your chooks a cold treat on a very hot day. A frozen watermelon section is also delicious. Water - over summer add extra water to the coop. Use a bucket with rocks at bottom. Place some bricks around it so the smaller chickens can easily access the water. Careful if you have small chicks as they are prone to drowning! Diatomaceous Earth - hard to pronounce but excellent for chickens and coops. Add it to the nesting boxes and dust bath areas so that the girls roll around in this insect-killing natural powder. Make a porridge from oats, pollard or bran and add the DE to deter internal parasites and worms. Apple cider vinegar - helps keep your chickens’ health in balance by regulating the body’s pH so that everything can run at its peak. Feeding eggs - yes give your excess eggs back to your girls. Scramble up some eggs with the shells and add delicious herbs - especially parsley, sage and rosemary. This will address the need for calcium and protein. SUBMITED BY FIONA LAIRD

Community Halloween party – a ‘spooky’ success. Ghastly ghouls and wicked witches were in abundance at this year’s Community Halloween Party, run by the Rotary Club of Woodend. On a hot spring evening, there was a great community turnout, with hundreds of children and adults in fancy dress. A good time was had by all, with some suitably ‘spooky’ music pumping out from the PA. Rotary members entered

As the Macedon Ranges slows down into the summer break, now is the ideal time to think about how you would like to spend your spare time in 2020. “Rotary Woodend welcomes everyone in our community to come and give us a try,” says Annie Hamer, membership chair for the Woodend Rotary club. “It’s a great way to meet new people, and to contribute to our community and Rotary’s global initiatives.” Annie has three key reasons why now is a great time to join Rotary. One: Rotary Woodend is active and visible in the local community – from regular fundraising activities, to marshalling the MRSPAG walk, to taking part in the Halloween Children’s party, there is a wide range of activities that members can be part of. The New Woodend Star is a Rotary initiative, published by the club every month on behalf of the Woodend community. Rotary gives back the profits from running this publication to local community groups, helping them to fund their activities. Two: Rotary activities make a difference to the lives of those around us. Whether it’s helping get furniture, household items and blankets for those in need, or
helping prepare our local secondary school students for job interviews, Rotarians make a difference to the lives of many in the Macedon Ranges. Three: Rotary makes a difference in the world. Rotary Woodend is currently building a school in Vanuatu for children who have been displaced due a natural disaster. It’s a significant project for a club of our size and there’s plenty of opportunity for people to get involved. The club also supports a number of Rotary international projects and has a regular commitment to support cleft palate operations in Bangladesh. “As a club, we are very active. We’re light on formality and big on talking about and actioning our projects and having fun doing it,” said Annie. “If this sounds like the sort of club you’d like to be part of, please get in touch.” Rotary’s final club meeting for 2019 is on 12 December. Book now for barefoot bowls or your Christmas function Last year, we had a very successful summer season of Barefoot Bowls, with several local clubs and businesses incorporating the format into their Christmas party plans. Social/Barefoot Bowls is available all year round at the Woodend Bowling Club, but is obviously more fun and enjoyable in the warmer months. You can book it for a night of fun, a party for Christmas or any other occasion, fundraising and so much more. We can provide all the bowls you will need, and we can also organise catering or you can use our kitchen. We have a well-stocked fully licensed bar, which can be opened with people to serve you, and you pay our very reasonable Crackerjack bowls club prices. Bookings are essential. Booking forms are available on our website, or at the Clubhouse.
The new pennant season gets rolling! The Club has teams in both Midweek (Tuesdays) and Saturday competitions, starting in October, and going all the way through to March, with a break over the Christmas period. Results have been mixed thus far, so we are naturally hoping that we can get as many teams as possible into the finals. We have also started our Club Championship events, with the Men’s and Ladies’ Singles Championships to be completed by late December. Other events will continue in the new year, including the Consolation Singles, Men’s Pairs, Ladies’ Pairs, Mixed Pairs, 21 up and 100 up. Good luck to all competitors.
Play Bowls Month is coming in March Last year, the Woodend Bowling Club took part in Bowls Victoria’s ‘Play Bowls Month’ during October, and it was a great success. However, we decided to move it to the warmer weather of March, which will be more pleasant under lights. We organized two very popular battles involving local groups and businesses, and we will be repeating them again next year – The Battle of the Sports Clubs and The Battle of the Businesses & Organisations.
If you have wondered what playing lawn bowls is like, why not come down to the Club and have a go. The Club can provide everything you need, the bowls and important guidance from one of our experienced players. And it’s free!

Student podcasts share community members’ inspirational stories A group of students from Sacred Heart College Kyneton have been developing their project management and media skills through their involvement in the LINCS Program. LINCS (Learning, Initiating, Networking and Connecting for Success) is an alternate applied learning subject offered to Year 9 students. The major project for 2019 was selected after the students decided they would like to learn about the journeys taken by, and life experiences of, members of our community. The team of students investigated ways they could discover more about people they saw as inspirational, with an aim of eventually sharing their learnings with the broader community. The ‘Community Inspired Podcasts’ were the result. This project provided a fantastic opportunity for students to experience a hands-on project from conception to final delivery. As well as developing their project management, recording and
editing skills, the podcast project allowed them to improve skills including: active listening, public speaking, and interviewing, while learning about the many and varied paths taken by those being interviewed. We greatly appreciate the support of Kyneton Community & Learning
Centre through funding provided by the state youth Engage! funding program; by members of Cobaw Community Health, who delivered sessions on community-related topics; and of course, the large number of people who were happy to give their time to be interviewed.
