AN INITIATIVE OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF WOODEND

Come out of the cold for some actionpacked, creative fun!

What are your children looking forward to doing most on Sunday 27 July? Learning a creative new dance or joining in a bit of West African inspired drumming? Trying out the basics in mini tramp, web rope and aerial circus skills? Perhaps they would like to plant a seed, build a nest, help create a giant pond mural – or a beautiful, bizarre cardboard garden? It’s all on offer from 10am to 3pm at Buffalo Stadium! As well as hands-on workshops that cater for toddlers to tweens, the addition of a marquee to the Stadium will see performances run across three lively stages, including: • Silly story-telling and musical mischief making with award winning children’s author and musician Craig Smith of The Wonky Donkey fame • Two magical ‘black light’ puppet shows by Dream Puppets • Stunning tricks and not-so-awkward audience interaction with masterful magician Adam Laurance in Adam’s Amazing Magic Show • Improvised dance acts by a troupe of seven performers from Travel Art Dance Company • Didgeridoo and story-telling by indigenous musician and artist Ron Murray • Rhythm, rhyme and ridiculousness with local musician David Juriansz And look out for two pint-sized riders sitting atop life-sized-ish camel puppets, as they rove around the festival – plus The New Woodend Star • July 2014

there’ll be food stalls, balloon twisting, the schools’ ‘Sea of Stars’ mural and the big CFA truck to climb! Festival co-founder, Gemma Rayner says the event will provide families with ‘a little bit of sparkle’ in the middle of winter. “We live in such a vibrant community, with a fabulous calendar of events of all sorts,” Ms Rayner said. “But, until now, there’s been nothing like this – a big, arts-focused festival aimed squarely at children and families,” she said. The Woodend Children's Festival is a non-profit community event coordinated by a committee of volunteers – with many more helping on the day. While the headline act, Craig Smith, is from New Zealand, most of the program comprises local talent, with many artists based in the Macedon Ranges or Melbourne. The event is funded by several government agencies, local businesses and community supporters. Craig Smith’s specific performances are sponsored by Trentham & Districts Community Bank® Branch and Goldfields Library Corporation. Several local primary schools are also getting involved, with students weaving a ‘Sea of Stars’ to adorn the walls at Buffalo Stadium on the day. Tickets to the festival are $12. Jump online now at www.woodendchildrensfestival.com.au for full program details and to pre-purchase tickets for guaranteed and fast-tracked entry. School needs Solar Sponsors

Woodend Primary School (WPS) is working hard to switch to renewable energy by installing solar panels and now seeks support from the community in this endeavour. After three unsuccessful applications for a government grant, the school launched the ‘Here Comes the Sun’ campaign to raise funds for the project by other means. So far, the school has run two sausage sizzles at the Woodend Community Farmers’ Market, a Hot Cross Bun Drive, and a Solstice Party for Solar Panels. WPS needs Solar Sponsors from the local community. ‘Anyone helping WPS to go solar is reducing greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change,’ said WPS Acting Principal, Lynne Flynn. ‘The school’s power bills will also be reduced, freeing up money for other purposes, for decades to come – a wonderful legacy! ‘Any donation to the cause will be gratefully received at the school office – every little bit helps,’ Mrs Flynn said. ‘Donations are tax-deductible. ‘If a family, an organisation, or a business donates $275 – enough for one solar panel – or more, their outstanding support will be commemorated on a permanent sponsors’ plaque at the school. ‘We have already received generous donations to the cause from the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group, Blackbird Cakes, Collier Office & Business Assist, Ethic, Holgate Brewhouse, Prince Wine Store, RedBeard Historic Bakery, and a number of school families. ‘Having carefully investigated the school’s energy needs, we aim to install a 10 kilowatt array on each of three roofs with different orientations – to capture as much sun as possible,’ Mrs Flynn explained. ‘The total 30kW system will include 120 solar panels, to be installed in stages, as we can afford them. The supplier, BREAZE Energy Solutions, a non-profit organisation from Ballarat, was chosen through a competitive quote process and approved by the School Council.’ ‘The school’s annual electricity bill is around $25,000. It’s exciting to imagine what else the school will be able to do with the money we’ll save, every year, by generating our own electricity from the sun,’ said Mrs Flynn. ‘When the panels are installed, our students will know that we that we are doing our best to secure their futures by taking action on climate change.’ Fundraising luncheon Hosted by Woodend Rotary Club in the school hall on August 9th. Please join us for a light lunch and delicious sweets. All proceeds will directly benefit our ‘Here Comes the Sun’ campaign. Turn to page 9 to learn more. Submitted by R. Colless

Chasing the Memories

Like others participating in Run Melbourne, Sylvia Franzen knows that no matter how hard she trains for the half-marathon, there may be variables on the day that threaten to throw all the preparation into a spin. Nothing, however, will alter her inspiration. Three years ago – before Sylvia had donned any running gear – her father Gunther, then 72, was diagnosed with Lewy Body disease and Alzheimer’s. Both share some characteristics and neither is curable. One of the distinguishing features of the former is that a sufferer experiences periods of being alert and coherent alternating with periods of being confused and unresponsive. “This run is a dedication to my dad, Gunther. In the late 70s–early 80s he ran the Big M Melbourne Marathon (Frankston to Melbourne) four times, so I thought it fitting that I should run this race in his honour and to raise funds for much needed research.” With the support of members of the Macedon Ranges Running Club, including 10 who will run the half marathon of 21.2km with her on July 27, Sylvia has formed the team Chasing the Memories. A great camaraderie has grown among the group as they’ve ramped up their training. “We’ve laughed, cried and most importantly talked. Lots of talking! MRRC philosophy is if you can’t talk you’re running too fast. Running is essentially an

Feel sensational

individual pursuit, but at no point in working towards this event have I felt alone,” says Sylvia. Recently Sylvia and team ran the 17.5 kilometers from Woodend to Kyneton, where Sylvia presented Gunther with a team shirt. It was an emotional morning with extended family and the run team on hand to celebrate the day. “What an awesome thing to do! My teammates met Dad and extended family and learnt about Alzheimer’s and the need for research funding.

Sylvia (far right) presenting Gunther with a team shirt following a training run from Woodend to Kyneton

“The Kyneton run was an extraordinary event and I feel blessed that I have been able to share it with my fellow runners,” says Sylvia. “For me the timing is perfect as it gives me a connection with Dad, who has been a full-time resident at R.M. Begg since May. We talk about the training and now he has his own t-shirt. He’ll be there on July 27 to cheer on the team as they cross the finish line.” continues on page 4

HVP wishes to advise local residents that winter harvesting operations are commencing again in the Railway and Fingerpost pine plantations, located between Macedon and Woodend on either side of Black Forest Drive. Operations will include thinning of some stands, and final felling of others. Harvesting operations are expected to run until the end of November. Harvesting and delivery contractors have been instructed to minimise as far as is practical the impacts on local residents. Residents are advised that log trucks will be using local roads including Canning Park Road, Centre Road, Fingerpost Road, and several other feeder roads in and around the pine plantations. Due care should be exercised around the boundaries of the plantation, at road intersections and at points of truck access from the plantation on to local roads. Please observe all safety signs.

Council adopts Structure Plan

Macedon Ranges Shire Council adopted a new town plan for Woodend at the 28 May Council meeting. The Structure Plan sets out a vision for the development of the township to a population of 5,000 people by 2036. The vision has six themes which relate to management of population growth, housing choice, and Woodend’s role, character and identity. The plan prioritises infill development over expansion of township boundaries to accommodate population growth at the present time. Mayor, Cr Roger Jukes said that the adoption of the plan follows almost two years of community consultation. “Council would like to thank local residents, community groups and the Community Reference Group for their valuable contributions to the preparation of this plan,” he said. The plan includes a Neighbourhood Character Study, which will be used to guide future development in a way that respects the existing character of Woodend. To view the final Structure Plan, visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/ woodend-structure-plan or drop into a Council service centre in Woodend, Gisborne, Kyneton or Romsey. The next stage of the project will involve a Planning Scheme Amendment to translate the plan’s directions into the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme. This will occur in conjunction with the implementation of the Kyneton and Riddells Creek structure plans over the next 12-18 months.

Have your say on our region’s unique features

Throughout July, Council is seeking community comment on a draft planning statement which will recognise the Macedon Ranges as an area of special significance in statelevel planning policy. The draft statement will be available on Council’s website, mrsc.vic.gov.au/planning-statement, and in Council service centres for one month from early July. Once adopted by Council, the statement will form part of Victorian Government policy within the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme, and will guide planning decisions into the future. Council would like to thank the large number of community members who provided input into the draft through an online survey in May/June, which received over 1100 responses. The findings from the survey and other consultation activities will be made available to the community over the coming months. Council is keen to keep residents involved in this process and present a policy to the Victorian Government that gives everyone confidence in the future management of our valued spaces. It is expected that Council will consider the final statement with any community comments at its September meeting. For more information, contact Council’s Strategic Planning and Environment unit on 5422 0333 or via or via strategicplanning@mrsc.vic.gov.au.

This will be done as a planning scheme amendment, and may take up to 18 months. I encourage you to look out for it and continue to have your say. Also keep a look out for the draft of the new Localised Planning Statement outlining what we see as important and should be protected within the Shire. Hesket Primary performs at Awards

Hesket Primary School has had a Jump Rope for Heart demonstration skipping team for 23 years. Over that time they have represented the National Heart Foundation and their school at many performances. These have included being on Channel 9’s Good Morning Show, numerous public performances and visiting many other schools.

Hesket Primary Skipping team

After performain a showcase at the Victorian Sports Awards the school was approached by Neill Gladwin the producer of the State Schools Spectacularto include the team in the 2013 production. This was an amazing experience for the team and they were delighted to again be asked to perform at the 2014 State Schools Spectacular. This year’s show is being held at Hisense Arena on Saturday 13th September. The team is already hard at work on their routine for this event. The team was recently asked to entertain the crowd at this year’s Victorian Education Excellence Awards. The awards ceremony was held held at Crown’s Palladium Room on Friday 16th May. Our team consists of 8 students aged between 8 and 11. This talented group train hard to improve their skills and teamwork while having lots of fun and being extremely fit. Hesket Primary School is very proud of their team’s achievements.- Great things happen in small places! Submitted by Cliff Palmer

Sixteen local girls and boys from 2nd Woodend Scouts experienced a rare endurance event on the Murray this term, paddling over 90km over four epic days and camping along the river banks at night. Over the course of the long weekend they paddled in pairs, with their tents and food in cargo holds, making their way downstream, following the path of the famous River Murray Marathon. The scouts completed their Canoeing Badge before this event, and all felt a marvellous sense of accomplishment at the finish. “It was something I’ve never thought of doing, but would do again in a heartbeat,” said Ruby, one of the scouts who took part. It was a great chance to properly enjoy the canoes generously donated by Bourkies of Woodend, and learn the skills of canoeing, team work, water safety, lightweight camping and bush cooking. In another great experience this term, twenty-two 2nd Woodend Scouts were amongst over 700 scouts from all over Victoria who converged on Tallarook Forest to take part in Scouthike – a competition hike event over two nights and two days. 98 teams of scouts hiked between overnight bases, completing up to 24 challenges along the way to score points for their team. Challenges included traditional scout activities such as dealing with a staged emergency to test first aid, tying poles together to construct bridges, lighting fires, camping out, survival, and navigation with maps and compass. Equal weighting in the scoring is also given to leadership and teamwork.

It's a Wrap!

Macedon Grammar School students had an amazing Art Exhibition on the long weekend in June at the Gisborne Mechanics Hall. For many students it was their first time showing some of their artwork. The display of all the artwork looked fantastic and there were lots of positive comments. Students enjoyed showing off their artwork to their families and lots of artworks were purchased.

The MGS Drama Group also put on a rousing performance of A Christmas Chaos which they have been rehearsing for over the past two terms. The performance was filled with comedy, action and drama as the actors displayed their amazing talents, what a great show! It was a full house and there was lots of laughter, action and fun. There was also great stage support from the back stage crews and props and set designers, a fantastic all round effort from all involved. This term also we have seen our students participate in inter school orienteering and the school book fair. The Year 8 students also had an excursion to the Old Melbourne Gaol to re-enact the trial of Ned Kelly as part of their English class. Last week all the senior students completed their mid-year exams, and after the term break, Year 10 students will be on work experience. We look forward to the holidays and a busy term 3. Members of the Woodend Unit of Red Cross would like to thank those in our community who participated in National Volunteers Week, and who worked hard to thank the volunteers of our community. Volunteering is a great way to participate, and feel a part of your community by connecting to other like minded people. On August 13, 1914, Lady Helen Munro Ferguson formed the first Australian branch of the Red Cross, just after the start of World War I. By the time World War II had commenced, the Australia branch of Red Cross had become the country’s largest charitable organisation. Today, there are over 200 hundred branches in Victoria, and the Woodend Unit is one of these. The humanitarian principles of the Red Cross have remained strong over the last 100 years, and continue to do so, as we endeavour to help those most in need, at times of large scale disasters, and in times of personal crises. The support of our local community is vital in this. Come and support us at our next fund raising activity, a cake stall on the 5th July – outside the Newsagency in High St – from 9.00 am. Anyone who would like to be more involved and become a Red Cross volunteer is welcome to come along to our meetings, which are held on the first Thursday of the month. The next meeting will be on the 3rd July, at 39 High St Woodend. Submitted by Carmel Stewart.

Hayden’s Ride

A 16 year olds 746 kms bike ride for Epilepsy Research in September 2014 Epilepsy affects 1 in 25 Australians and this young person’s ride will raise funds to research the cause of this disease and its treatment and this will help improve the lives of many Australians. You can help: it’s easy. Go to: fitnessandchallengeevents. everydayhero.com/au/haydyn-s-ride-for-epilepsy and donate whatever you can afford for every kilometer Hayden rides. Check in each day to see his progress and you, your family, friends in school and our community can read about this incredible journey as it unfolds. Hayden explained that the reason for doing the ride was from seeing a class mate have a seizure last year, so he decided to raise much needed money for research into epilepsy. Hayden has a love for riding and is training every day. Hayden will ride from Woodend to Broadmeadows then up the Hume Highway to Parliament House in Canberra. A total of 746 kms, over 7 days, from 24th September 2014 30th September 2014. He is fully supported by Woodend Venturer leader Mark Lamble www.evolvefilms.com.au/clips.html who will post video links from each day’s journey and many of the Venturer Scouts will be on the bus and heading into each town to promote the ride and the cause and to prepare the way for Hayden to talk at all public meetings. Give him a hand. By helping him you help every person who has or will suffer from epilepsy. Woodend Rotary Club is a proud to support Hayden on this inspiring journey Submitted by Miranda Bain, Director: Community Services, Woodend Rotary

Links For Wildlife

“Linking existing areas of native vegetation with new native plantings would assist smaller birds and other animals to move around and survive,” said Ian Temby recently at the Annual General Meeting of the Ashbourne Landcare Group. Ian has worked for wildlife for 36 years initially with the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, then through its many name changes, finished with DSE in 2010 and since then as an independent wildlife management consultant, and has written a book called Wild Neighbours, the Humane Approach to Living with Wildlife. He has recently moved to Ashbourne where he has noted more than 78 bird species and plenty of bats, frogs, possums, sugar gliders and native flora near his property. Ian also spoke about living with wildlife, in particular the problem of coping with injured animals which opened up much discussion. He spoke of the dramatic increase of some wildlife such as our local grey kangaroos. As these animals now have no natural predator like the dingo, other native animals are now struggling to survive in meaningful numbers, due to the damage to their natural habitat. Ashbourne Landcare includes the area between Falloons Road, Tylden Road, Harpers Road and the Great Dividing Range. Its aim is to promote the natural and agricultural environment which includes the upper reaches of the Campaspe River, some forest and a variety of farming. This year it plans to start establishing links for wildlife. With various government grants and two spray pumps available for hire, the Group assists members to remove weeds, especially gorse, blackberry, broom and hawthorn. Speakers are regularly invited on topics ranging from local geo-hydrology and cattle feeding to native birds and flora. The Group also liaises with other Landcare groups which have included visits to native nurseries or relevant field days. New members are always welcome: Contact President Alan Denehey 0412 277 573, or Secretary Libby Peck 0419 396 641. Submitted by Jane Holth and Libby Peck

Trivia night raises $7,100

What a wonderfully generous and supportive community we live in. Thanks to you, Woodend Kindergarten’s trivia night has raised an amazing $7,100.

Woodend Playgroup even came dressed for the Rio Carnival. “It was a great evening, and I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves,” said kindergarten president Mark Constable. “And the money we made has exceeded our wildest expectations. “We have been very lucky to have had such wonderful support – both from the people who attended and from the local businesses that donated items or sponsored either a table or a trivia round.

The money will help us buy a shade-sail for the sandpit, which has been without cover since we lost a lovely elm tree that had stood in the grounds for 30 years. In what was an extremely enjoyable evening, 100 people in teams of ten put their knowledge to the test. Jubilant cries and despairing groans filled the Norma Richardson Hall at the end of each round as the answers were revealed. The hall itself was beautifully decorated by Country Style Events to reflect the colour and spirit of Brazil, the host nation of the soccer World Cup. The team from

I’m very proud to be a part of this community, and all of us at the kindergarten are extremely grateful to everyone who helped us. “We should all remember this generous support when we’re choosing where we spend our own money. Awards celebrate young people

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is calling for nominations for its annual Youth Awards, which celebrate and recognise the achievements of young people. All young people in the Macedon Ranges, along with their families, friends, teachers, neighbours, employers or colleagues, are encouraged to put forward a nomination. Nominations will be accepted for anyone aged 12–25 years in the Macedon Ranges who has excelled in the arts, sport, at school or in their community. Young people are such an important part of our community, and a nomination shines a light on both the contributions they make and the individuals who make them. Nominations close at 5pm on Tuesday 29 July and winners will be announced at the Youth Awards presentation night on Tuesday 26 August in the Kyneton Town Hall. Award categories and nomination packs can be found on Council’s website, mrsc.vic.gov.au/youth or can be picked up from any Council service centre. Woodend Cemetery

Looking through some of the older records, there are a number of older graves marked as ‘Reserved’ which are unable to be used at the current time. Reserved graves which are older than 25 years are able to be sold by the Trust if the original purchaser cannot be located, contacted or has been buried elsewhere. If you think a relative of yours may have purchased a plot prior to 1989 please contact the Trust. To be able to use a Reserved gravesite, you must have proof of purchase – that is, a receipt for payment or a Deed for the site, have inherited the Right of Interment or be able to provide evidence you are related to the original purchaser, including a statutory declaration. The Trust is seeking your help: as part of a project to restore lost historical records, the Trust is interested in any old photographs you may have of the Cemetery prior to 1985. All photographs will be scanned and returned to you. Please contact Keryn on 0417 011 300 if you have any items of interest, or email woodendcemetery@iinet.net.au. Did you know? Woodend has several notable burials: • Sir Errol Knox died aged 60. He was appointed as Managing Editor of the Argus newspaper in 1937. Staff of the Argus lined Spencer Street when his funeral entourage made its way from Melbourne to the Woodend Cemetery in October 1949. • Sir Errol also rose from an enlisted Private during WWI to a Major. He was later appointed Brigadier and made Director-General of Army Public Relations which he undertook in an honorary capacity. • Sir Errol is buried with his wife, Lady Gertrude Knox in the Catholic monumental section. August 8th 2014 Dying to Know Day is an annual day of action dedicated to bringing to life conversations and community actions around death, dying and bereavement. Did you know? • 75% have not had end of life discussions • 60% think we don’t talk about death enough • Over 70% of us die in hospital though most of us would prefer to die at home • Very few of us die with an Advance Care plan (less than 10 percent) • The number of Australians aged 65 and over will double by 2050 increasing our need to plan while well and share our wishes with our loved ones We encourage all Australians to: • develop their death literacy • make their end of life plans such as a will and advance care plan • share these wishes with their families • get informed about end of life and death care options such as dying at home, home and community led funerals and natural burial • be better equipped to support family and friends experiencing death, dying and bereavement. Inspired by the Igniting Change book, Dying to Know, D2K Day believes there is a HUGE amount of unharnessed death-related knowledge in the Australian community. A national day of action provides a way for people to share knowledge and become better equipped to deal with death! On Dying To Know Day, Natural Grace Holistic Funeral Directors, are hosting an evening of warm organic hospitality where everyone is welcome to come for a safe and gentle chat about dying and death. From a foundation of refusing to deny the fact of death but with the wish to make gentle it’s effect, we will gather at ethic. 63 Urquhart Street, Woodend on Friday 8th August at 7.30pm. Just in case we need some prompts, topics which may be covered include: planning for end of life, creative ways to begin difficult conversations, choices for after death and funeral care, home based family led funeral care and sustainable burial and cremation options. Yummy organic treats and mulled wine will be served! Gold coin donation would be appreciated. All welcome! Enquiries to Libby on 1300 008 037.

The Garage

Opening this month, The Garage is a brand new facility specialising in the service and repair of premium, European and late model cars and SUVs. Owned and operated by Mount Macedon couple, Adrian and Andrea Matthews, The Garage offers the latest technology and diagnostic tools, combined with a professional and friendly customer service. With over 30 years experience in servicing European cars, The Garage’s owner and head technician, Adrian Matthews says local drivers will no longer need to travel down to the city to get their cars serviced. “For Macedon Ranges residents, it can be a real inconvenience to take your car all the way to the city or up to Bendigo to get it serviced. Many European vehicles can need specialised attention but don’t need to be taken to the main dealer for that service. “By opening The Garage in Woodend, you no longer need to take an entire day to get your car looked after, you can get a similar level of care, right here on the doorstep.” With over seven years experience in the automotive industry, Andrea Matthews says The Garage aims to offer drivers a unique service for the area. “Customers will be invited to join us for a free coffee, take advantage of our free wifi and we’ll also be offering a free pick up and drop off service (within a defined area).” More information at www.the-garage.biz or drop by Unit 1, 15 Bowen Street, Woodend. In July 1984 the Woodend Neighbourhood House became an official incorporated association, which means that the House is turning 30, and we are having a party (with cake) on Tuesday 15th July from 10.30am. To help us celebrate we want you to tell us what the House means to you – try to keep it short (20 words or less) – and we will transpose them onto our celebration tree. We will be seeking a small donation from you too, and we will send all money collected from our birthday celebration to the Woodend CFA. It seems fitting, given that the House was born out of a community response to the Ash Wednesday bushfires (it was originally a drop-in centre after the fires), that we give back to the CFA. Here is the link to RSVP www.surveymonkey.com/s/ WNH30, please let us know by the 10th July, of course you can call us on 5427 1845. You will also have found our new look brochure in your New Woodend Star this month. There’s a lot on offer. In our language section we have our continuing French classes; Beginners, Beginners 2 and Polish your French (for those with a few language notches on their belt) plus we are starting Italian for Beginners, you do need to have some other language knowledge to start this course (an understanding of romance language grammar structure etc).

The Pathways courses are booming, with Intro to Computers and the newer Intro to Word and Intro to Excel. Our Literacy Basics course is taking the next step, concentrating on writing rather than reading and we are busy putting together an Introduction to Permaculture/ Horticulture, starting in August (just in time for spring preparations). Have a good look at our Workshops – the first one off the rank is the great value $25 Chocolate Making on Saturday 19th July from 1.30-3pm – and they keep on coming after that, get your name down and your payment in, there are limited places for all the workshops. You’ll find a new children’s activity with Chieko, our new origami specialist. Over three one-hour Origami for Children workshops she will teach your children all the basic folds and get them started on their ‘thousand cranes’ or whatever other origami passion takes over. It’s $45 for the three sessions, starting on 19 July – see the brochure for more details. Remember, RSVP by 10th July for our birthday celebrations and, as always, pop into the House with your ideas, questions or to get your name down for your desired course. Ciao! Rewards for responsible pet owners

Well behaved dogs and their owners will be rewarded with free pet goods as part of a new responsible pet ownership program being introduced by Macedon Ranges Shire Council this year. The program will keep a register of dog owners who do the right thing by registering their pet, keeping them under control, and carrying litter bags when out in public. The register will be Responsible owners to be rewarded by developed through daily Macedon Ranges Shire Counil patrols conducted by Local Laws officers in public places such as streets, parks and reserves throughout the shire. Those found to be acting responsibly will be invited to have their details added to a register to win one of six hampers of pet goods, to be drawn at random at the end of each calendar year. Pet owners found to be in breach of the relevant laws will be advised of their responsibilities, as well as the benefits of registering their pet. No on-the-spot penalties will be issued. “With nearly 11,000 dogs and 3,000 cats registered in the shire, we know that the majority of our residents are responsible pet owners,” said Anne-Louise Lindner, Manager Community Safety. “Most people understand the importance of registering their pet and keeping them under control in public. This new program is not punitive in any way; it is about education and positive reinforcement. “We also hope that these patrols will promote greater awareness of Council’s role of encouraging and promoting responsible pet ownership,” she said. The program will commence in July, and is an action in Council’s four-year Domestic Animal Management Plan, which was adopted in 2012. For more information about pet ownership responsibilities including animal registration, contact Council’s Local Laws Unit on 5422 0333 or visit mrsc.vic. gov.au/pets. Spokes of Hope

Members of our team have many different reasons for participating in the Ride to Conquer Cancer and in doing so support the great work at Peter Mac, here's a story of how one of our riders, Alison Farrell is motivated to take part: More than 62 years ago as a young married man with two young children my father-in-law Jim Farrell was diagnosed with lip cancer, three weeks after his 15-month-old son David was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Surgery revealed that David’s cancer was beyond available treatment and he died aged 18 months. Meanwhile Jim’s cancer had spread into his neck and the lymph nodes of his armpit, and the prognosis was also dire. Along with radium needles a radical surgery was proposed that involved removal of a large section of Jim’s lower face, and a portion of his neck and underarm. The anesthetic used was ether. He wasn’t expected to survive the surgery. But Jim survived and had months of treatment and reconstruction. In the first of many operations a section of his chest was stretched to form a ‘tube’ of skin large enough to rebuild his lips and cheek. One end was attached in place of his missing top lip and the other remained attached to his chest for weeks until a blood flow was established (tubed pedicle graft). Jim Farrell is now 86 years old. He and his beautiful wife Bonnie (dec.) were married for 61 years, had 16 children, 44 grandchildren, and 42 great grandchildren. He is Peter Mac’s

Jim Farrell with Damien and Allison last week

longest surviving cancer patient. Last month my father David Picken had surgery for skin cancer on his lip. In order to reconstruct his top lip a wedge of skin was taken from his bottom lip, flipped and stitched in place of his top lip (a pedicle flap graft). His lips were then sewn together for two weeks until a blood flow was established, at which time they were separated. He is now cancer free. The pioneering approach and surgery performed on my father-in-law at Peter Mac more than 60 years ago influenced the treatment of many others to follow, including the reconstructive surgery performed on my dad last month. Imagine what could be made possible in the future by supporting what is happening at Peter Mac now. Please support Peter Mac by donating to Spokes of Hope in our ‘Ride to Conquer Cancer’. Our team will be having a launch on Sunday July 20. For more information follow us on Facebook - Woodend Spokes of Hope. Submitted by Daron Jack

Encouraging youth to ‘Engage!’

Amanda Millar has announced the investment of $12 million into the Engage! program to help young Victorians to build skills needed for life after school. “I am pleased to invite local community and government groups in the Macedon Ranges to apply for grants of up to $150,000 to deliver initiatives for and with our young people. “The funding will support organisations and councils to deliver a wide range of initiatives including volunteering and mentoring programs, and projects that boost real-life skills and connect young people to further education, training or careers. Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith encouraged organisations to reach out to young people in the community and work with them to develop innovative projects that could be eligible for an Engage! grant. “Through this program, Victoria’s young people will have access to fantastic initiatives that help develop new skills and networks,” Mr Smith said. “This $12 million Engage! program provides community organisations and local governments with the practical resources they need to listen, respond and create opportunities for young Victorians so that they can fulfil their potential. “Since 2012 over 100,000 young Victorians have been involved in Engage! programs, highlighting the success of the program. Applications close on Friday 1 August. For more information or to apply visit www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au. ADVERTISEMENT

Change It Up Training Woodend Library

Susie Prestney, one of the Woodend Library Managers, has been awarded the Reid Scholarship. Since 1990, the Library Board of Victoria has awarded the Barrett Reid and the Margery C Ramsay Scholarships to develop the leadership potential of Victorian public library staff. One scholarship of up to $30,000 is awarded each year. The 2013 Barrett Reid Scholarship will enable Susie to investigate best practice in volunteer programs in a library setting. Her research will take her to California where she will undertake an internship at the California State Library in Sacramento. Susie will spend two weeks with the renowned ‘Get Involved: Powered by Your Library’ project team responsible for a state wide initiative designed to expand the visibility and contributions of skilled volunteers through public libraries. Susie will also visit public libraries in the San Jose area that have positioned themselves firmly at the forefront of award-winning library programming with volunteers. Inspiration for seeking out new ways of working with volunteers grew from a volunteer-driven programming initiative at Woodend which was suggested by one of Woodend’s keen Library members, Julie Ward. In 2013 the project became ‘Warm up Woodend’ – Julie signed on as a Library volunteer and led this art project focused on the library, which was aimed to bring colour and warmth into the cold and damp Woodend winter. Braemar College Year 9 community service students and volunteers from all demographics flocked to the project. In 2014 the project ‘Get Knitted’ was supported by the Shire and in June the trees, benches and bike racks outside the library were yarn-bombed. Many community members and visitors to Woodend comment on how “it puts a smile on your face and this makes Woodend such a welcoming town”. The Woodend staff look forward to Susie’s report and to incorporating new volunteer skills and ideas into the Library programs offered to the wider community. Submitted by Lulu Cockram

An Animated Film Society

Melbournian Adam Elliott made his mark in the world of claymation pictures in 2004 with his short film, Harvie Krumpet, winning the Oscar for Best Short Animated Film. He and his producer Melanie Coombs then decided on a full-length feature. This film, Mary and Max, was screened at the MRFS at its June meeting. The film was five years in the making and this touching tale of two lonely people who become pen pals – 8 year old Mary living in Melbourne and 44 year old Max living in New York – showcases yet again the talent of this very creative director/ producer team. On July 9th, members will be treated to a classic with the screening of The Third Man, a 1949 film from director Carol Reed with screenplay by Graham Greene. Starring Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten, we follow in the footsteps of novelist Holly Martins as he travels to postwar Vienna where a flourishing black market operates. His ex-school friend, Harry Lime, has offered him a job but Martins finds that Lime has died in unusual circumstances and decides to investigate. The Macedon Ranges Film Society meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 7p.m. in the Woodend Community Centre. Film notes are provided and for those who wish, there is supper, kindly supplied by members, following the screening. Enquiries about membership must first be made by emailing mrfilmsociety@gmail.com or by call Lorraine on 5427 0921 or Christine on 5429 5452. Submitted by Christine Caley

Ernie Sigley and Friends

Kyneton Town Hall, Friday 1 August at 11. 30am

Ernie began his career as a DJ on 3DB Melbourne when he was 15 years old and also appeared on the TV show, “Teenage Mailbag”. He has received 20 Logies for most popular performer and producer. He also won a gold Penguin award as Australia’s top entertainer and the Gold Logie in 1974. Ernie has many Number 1 hits including “Hey Paula”, also receiving a gold record for his album “Here’s Ernie”. He then took over the national “Tonight” show, which was re-named “The Ernie Sigley Show” and became the highest rating tonight show on Australian television. From there he hosted his highly popular show of interviews and talk on 3AW for 12 years as well as performing in clubs and concert halls. “Ernie Sigley is famous for his raspy voice, the gap-toothed grin, the lascivious laugh, the fondness for grubby innuendo, the who cares, it’ll be right on the night approach. These were the Sigley stock in trade throughout a career, which has had more ups and downs than a bride’s nightie, to use a gag Sigley himself might employ. His story and songs are entertaining, after all he is the consummate performer.” (The Age 2008). Logie Award winner and game-changing Australian musician Ernie Sigley brings his story to the Macedon Ranges. Join Ernie Sigley as he takes you through his 50 years of success in the industry, accompanied by special guest guitarist Mick Hamilton, followed by a complimentary morning tea from 10.30am. Stewart Olney, John Newell, Dave Bower and Bob Sullivan volunteers with Landcare – Thursday Crew and Woodend Men’s Shed. You have probably seen them out working alongside the railway line and other locations around the town. The ‘Thursday Crew’ is a special group of Landcare volunteers who devote their time to cleaning up and restoring locations around Woodend. These are the guys who come in to do the heavy lifting so to speak. Experienced with machinery and chainsaws, they do the bulk of the weed eradication and infrastructure work, before other Landcare volunteers are able to plant and mulch. It was during one particularly cold and wet session, that the idea of a Men’s Shed was first raised. A long frustrating search for a local facility to call home has finally come to fruition with the generous support of Bupa Woodend’s (previously known as Woodend Community Aged Care) management team. To describe it as a shed really doesn’t do it justice. The location at the rear of the Aged Care facility in Sullivans Road; is actually a large, comfortable, self contained recreation room with its own kitchenette, reverse cycle heating/cooling, and access to a bbq area and single lane bowling green. This is the first time in Australia that a Men’s Shed has been located at an Aged Care Facility; and you would have to agree that this is an inspiring initiative by Bupa and Men’s Shed, with many social benefits for all concerned. The facility residents are encouraged to visit the Men’s Shed, and already friendships are being forged. According to Stewart Olney (President) many of the members have donated their own equipment to the Shed, and they will be purchasing other equipment, with vouchers generously donated by the local Rotary Club. At this stage the Shed will be open on Mondays & Tuesdays from 9am to 1pm. As more members join, it is anticipated that hours will increase as required. Occasional visitors are welcomed, or you can become a member for just $20 per year. The committee would love interested locals to call in and have a cuppa and see what they are doing. Parking is available along Sullivans Road, and you enter at the large gate to the rear of the property. This waterhole is to the west of Gilbert Gordon Oval, and the ‘Thursday Crew’ is currently removing weeds, and rehabilitating this area. The waterhole was built by local policeman Sgt Earnshaw in the 1920s, to create a place for kids to swim. The local Historical Society is doing research on the Lake if you are curious to find out more. Written by Marion Coulson

Pastors parables

Did you know . . . . . All religions in the world believe we must practice very specific behaviour and follow very specific rules in order to reach their form of heaven. All of them believe that their “way” is the only way. Only Christianity teaches that God loved us enough to make the way for us. Only Christianity teaches that God forgives us based on His grace, and He opens His arms to us not because of how good we are or how much we do. In some ways, Christianity is the opposite of religion. If religion is about humans reaching up to get to God, Christianity is about God reaching down to rescue us. Think about it this way. All other religions require that you do certain things in order to make it to their afterlife. Christianity is the only faith system that believes that God, has already done what is necessary for His children to reach Him, through Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. He did it all on our behalf!!That’s grace! Since all religions are different, we have to make a choice. Whichever religion you choose will determine your eternity. If you would like to know more about faith in Jesus please contact Pastor Marilyn or our office 5429 6327. We would be happy to help you find true peace and joy in life. Encourage Church “Encouraging one another to be all that we can be in life and in God”. You are also invited to join us at one of our Sunday Services: - 10am at 7 Mitchell Court Romsey, or 6pm at Woodend Community Centre or one of our fortnightly Life Groups, Fortnightly Youth events and weekly Children’s programs. We also offer Kidzone Before & After School Care, Vacation Care and ‘mainly music’ Program. Submitted by Pastor Marilyn Hunter - Encourage Church

There were many strong individual performances on the day, and a number of students have been invited to attend a second selection trial for the State team that last year contained several Braemar students, and was victorious at the National Championships for the first time in many years. According to Principal, Mr. Russell Deer, "Braemar College has a long tradition of orienteering success, and a number of our students have gone on to compete at state, national and international levels." Sun Country Cup Football Win Braemar College defeats Bendigo Senior Secondary to become Regional Champions On Friday 29 May, Braemar College football team became Central Victorian Regional Champions when they defeated Bendigo Senior Secondary by 55 points. The level of determination and energy by Braemar College stood out. They worked hard in the first quarter to set a platform for the remainder of the game. The Braemar team displayed strength across the field, with standout performances by Jake Conolan, Conor Dimasi, Nicholas Doolan, Brodie Hoyne, Riley Paterson, Jack Reaper, Trent Stead and Thomas Wood. Braemar College Principal Mr. Russell Deer said, "The Bendigo team had a number of TAC players in their squad, and our team came into this match as underdogs, so this win is a particularly significant achievement." Braemar College defeated Maryborough Education Centre to qualify for the match against Bendigo Senior Secondary. They will now meet the Ballarat Regional Champions in the next round. Submitted by D. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, this year’s Woodend Winter Arts Festival played to full houses and attracted world famous artists whose concerts will be heard throughout Australia and in many overseas countries. What a feather in the cap of the organizers and the many local people who gave so generously of their time to make it such a fantastic success. Without doubt, this festival is already achieving world wide recognition. Over a hundred years ago, another group of Woodender’s banded together to set up a Choral Society, and how this came about was duly reported in the original Woodend Star on the 30th April, 1904. Although a far cry from the standards of the present Festival, it shows how all those years ago music played an important role in our community and how a group of enthusiasts set out to bring their own love of music to a wider audience. “A NEW MUSICAL SOCIETY: Music, both instrumental and vocal, always to be encouraged, would seem to be making headway in Woodend. In the one case we now have a well established band, and the “forward movement”in regard to the other is represented by the formation, on Wednesday evening, of what is to be known as the Woodend Choral Society. The meeting at which the new society was formed was held in the Mechanics’ Institute, was well attended, and carried through on lines likely to lead to the achievement of the success expected. Mr. N. Jongerboed was voted to the chair and the desirability of forming the Society was affirmed on the motion of Mr. E. F. Daniel, seconded by Mr. G. Sproule. Mr. J. W. Whitehouse was appointed secretary and treasurer on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. E. F. Daniel, and Mr T. Kidney was unanimously chosen to fill the position of conductor, he undertaking to assist the society until well established by giving his services for 10 shillings a week. It was decided to confine the society to performing members and, on the motion of Messrs of G.A. Daniel and G. Sproule, the subscription was fixed at a shilling a week and sixpence for ladies. On the motion of Messrs Sproule Miss K Gaggerio was appointed pianist…….A weekly practice was decided upon to take place each Thursday night and it was agreed to apply for the Lodge room at the Mechanics’ Institute for the purpose. Rules were drawn up for the guidance of the society.”
