NEWHAM COMMUNITY PIG SCULPTURE STOLEN A bronze sculpture of a pig has been stolen from the wall outside the Newham General Store. The little bronze porker has graced the Newham village centre since 2010 and was removed some time during the night of Thursday 10th October. It appears thieves levered up a 200kg capstone to remove bolts anchoring the sculpture to the wall. Nicknamed Chin-Chin, the pig was donated by local jeweller and wall builder Roy Martin, as part of a program of streetscape improvements conducted by the community at that time, with the support of the Macedon Ranges Shire Council. “The mould was made from an antique porcelain money box I picked up in France many years ago,” Mr Martin said. “We cast it in bronze

to be a sort of mascot for the community and as an historical gesture towards the bacon factory which was the centre of the village economy back in the late 1800s.” The little pig has attracted plenty of attention over the years, featuring in plenty of tourists' snapshots as they stop at the store, and becoming a firm favourite with local children who play on the wall after school. It also had a prominent role to play in the village's mammoth Pig Festival of 2014, when it was used as the template for ten life-size fibreglass sculptures, which were decorated by well-known local artists and auctioned to raise funds for the Very Special Kids Woodend Project. The image of the pig is widely used by community groups as a logo,

appearing on a variety of merchandise such as aprons and local preserves labels. “We're pretty devastated that it's been taken,” said Mr Martin. “It's very much a part of our identity now and locals have grown very attached to our little pig. We'd appreciate if it was returned, no questions asked.” Meanwhile, police are on the lookout. The pig weighs approximately 6kg. It is 450cm long and 22cm high. A small bronze mushroom was also taken and an accompanying bronze snail was stolen some years ago. Anyone with information can contact local police or Roy Martin on 0411 611 417. Woodend filmmaker reaches for the sky with new film

A few weeks ago, a group of Woodend residents attended a ‘sneak peak’ screening of Ocean to Sky – a new adventure documentary by local filmmaker, Michael Dillon. The audience joined Edmund Hillary on his greatest journey his jet boat expedition up India’s Holy River Ganges, from the Bay of Bengal to its snowy source high in the Himalaya. Michael filmed the expedition in 1977; the film now combines digitally remastered original footage with contemporary interviews with the expeditioners. A rollercoaster of emotions play out and their deep love for their friend Ed shines through as they recount tales of laughter and tears, adventure and excitement. It’s a rare chance to meet the man behind the legend. In the words of his daughter Sarah Hillary, “It is the first film to really show who Ed was. I found it exciting, funny and deeply moving.” The ‘sneak peek’ audience laughed and cried, and afterwards stood and clapped and clapped. What a reaction! Here are a few of their comments: Ocean to Sky was absolutely wonderful. We just loved it. A “must see.” Beth and Kevin I could almost feel myself with you on the journey. Alice loved your 'spiritual' angle. Holy blazes! What a story! Bruce I really didn’t know what to expect. The action was so exciting, the photography stunning, but it was the love and connections between the members of the crew that bowled me over. Truly moving. Mary Ocean to Sky will be released in NZ cinemas in October, and in Australia early next year. We will keep you posted. You can follow more about the film and view the trailer on www.michaeldillon.films.com.au or www.facebook.com/ michaeldillonfilms. Photo: Michael Dillon in India 1977

St Mary’s 160th Celebrations On November 8 1859, a small wooden church was opened on Buckland Street, on the current site of the rose garden in the church grounds. The Woodend community, ever-changing and growing during those gold rush years, gathered there for baptisms, weddings, funerals, and regular worship. In less than five years, that wooden church was deemed insufficient for the growing community (and the Woodend winters!) and so, on November 8, 1864, the beautiful bluestone church with “walls two feet thick” that stands there today, was opened. Every single day for 160 years, excluding some time here and there for repairs, St Mary’s Anglican Church has been a gathering place for the people of Woodend, to celebrate and grieve, to sing songs and pray, to marvel in the beauty of the building, and sit in the peace of the garden. The people of St Mary’s are celebrating this great milestone with a special service on November 10 at 11am, and we would love to welcome you. There are many families in the district with close ties to St Mary’s, and there are many people who have never managed to come and visit – no matter who you are or what your connection to St Mary’s might be, you are very much welcome to join us, as we give thanks for this place and this community. The true Christmas spirit For past nine years the Churches of the Macedon Ranges have organised a free Christmas “Toy Shop” for families living in the shire who might struggle to afford a Christmas gift for their child. This year is our tenth year! The Toy Shop relies completely on the generosity of our community to donate gifts to stock the shop. Families are referred to us by local support and welfare agencies and are given a personal invite to attend the shop and pick out toys for their children. For families who are facing challenging times, Christmas can become an incredibly stressful, lonely and sad season. Unable to participate in many of the traditions that our culture has come to know as “normal” these families can feel even more isolated and marginalised. As we rely on donated goods, there is no cost to the families for these gifts. We require donations of toys for children aged 0-18. Gifts need to be new and valued around $20. We also welcome donations of books, plush toys, $20 food only vouchers and smaller items that would be suitable as stocking fillers. We particularly fall short in gifts for older children each year. How to Donate:

Donations can be dropped into the offices of Cobaw Community Health in Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend or Contact Georgina Harvey (0404 442 891) directly to arrange pick up of donations. Donations of both gifts and money will be gratefully received. All financial donations will only be used to purchase toys to stock the shop. Gifts need to be received by Wednesday the 11th of December to allow time for sorting and setting up of the toy shop. We are also looking for businesses/organizations who would be willing to participate as a drop off point so that we can enable donations to be made shire-wide. All Enquiries: Georgina Harvey, MR Toy Shop Co ordinator. SUBMITTED BY GEORGINA HARVEY

parkrun comes to Woodend

Nicole Harman and Peter Machell Mortgage Brokers

Worldwide community phenomenon parkrun is coming to Woodend, with Campaspe parkrun set to launch November 2. parkrun is a free, weekly, timed, 5km run or walk held in towns throughout the world every Saturday at 8am. What started out in a London suburb fifteen years ago with thirteen runners and five volunteers has transformed to an international movement, with millions of participants walking or running every single Could you Saturday. Campaspe parkrun co-Event Director Mathew Piper said the rules of parkrun are quite simple. Home Loan? “Walk, jog or run the set 5km course. Enjoy yourself. Get active. Bring your dog. Push a pram. parkrun isn’t about elite athletes racing each other, it’s about getting up and moving in an inclusive, community atmosphere,” Mr Piper said. Woodend is the ideal location to capture a large audience, with the closest parkrun events in Lancefield, Castlemaine and Sunbury. “We’re really hoping to attract the attention of Kyneton, Trentham, Tylden, Macedon and Gisborne residents. It’s such a great way to boost your health and fitness as well as make new friends,” he said. The course will follow the Five Mile Creek path from the Woodend Children’s Playground to Romsey Road and back, with a short detour up to the base of the Shirley Park development. It’s a relatively flat course, with a couple of pinchy little hills to get the heart started. Volunteering is a huge aspect of parkrun, with each event requiring six or more volunteers every week. The launch on November 2 and every Saturday thereafter will be held at 7:45am at the Woodend Children’s Playground. Find Campaspe parkrun on Facebook for more information, or visit www.parkrun.com.au to register.

Distinguished young singer works with Young Voices of Macedon

Message from Your councilor

Young Voices of Macedon is proud to have guest tutor Amelia Jones working with them alongside regular staff, in preparation for the annual concert Global journeys. Originally from Wales, Amelia is a soprano with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Australia and an Honours degree from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. She is Principal Soprano at The Scots' Church, is a regular soloist with Melbourne Baroque Orchestra, and is also a singer and soloist with the worldrenowned Australian Chamber Choir. Amelia is recognised internationally for her vocals on the Australian video game Hollow Knight and on the award-winning Japanese anime series Made in Abyss and The Rising of the Shield Hero. It is also planned that Amelia will continue to work with the choir on a monthly basis in 2020, inspiring a love of singing, and assisting children to develop excellent vocal technique and other choral singing skills. Following the annual concert, the choir will embark on preparation for Christmas music for the Carols by candlelight, Gisborne on 8 December and the Service of reading and carols on 15 December at the Church of the Resurrection, Macedon. New members are invited to join from early November. See yvmacedon.org.au.

In the last few weeks, Councillors have received many emails from residents wanting Council to do more to protect our natural landscapes and rural environment, as well as encouragement for us to take stronger action on climate change. We will continue to increase our initiatives to do this, and report back on what we are undertaking, as well as what we have achieved. I am happy to discuss these topics with anyone at any time. Congratulations to all those involved in the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group, both previous and new committee members. Their initiatives have become valuable parts of our shire's life: the various Farmers' Markets in our shire are continuing to grow, the Waste Action Group are educating us all in what can and can’t be recycled and the new Transport Action Group is busy consulting on methods of getting around that result in less pollution and assists in connecting our communities. Council continues to invest in footpaths and will continue to advocate for the rail trail to Daylesford as well as off-road cycling and walking tracks that connect our towns. We are well on our way to improving the recovery of our recycled materials by removing glass from the yellow-lidded kerbside co-mingled bin, and I would like to thank you for your assistance in doing this. Please be aware of new places where glass can be taken to be recycled, as we continue to expand options. At the time of writing for Woodend the glass can be taken to the transfer station on Quarry Rd. Stay safe, walk or cycle to places as much as you can, and always think about what you purchase in order to reduce food waste and packaging in the first place. Together we can tackle the issues of climate change, healthy living, and protecting our rural lifestyle and natural landscapes. Keep emailing councillors. We do listen.

Shared Reading Circles We all know that reading is good for us. It gives us information, it allows us to see other ways to live and to be, it gives us access to unknown worlds. Reading on your own to yourself reduces stress, improves memory and writing skills and increases empathy. “We look for validation in the words, for catharsis, humour, common sense and a sense of commonality.” Isabelle Cartwright. Reading aloud with others gives a new layer of all these things, plus more. Through interactive bibliotherapy, or ‘shared reading’ as it is known in Australia and the UK, To Turn A Page offers a safe space to explore feelings and emotions through a text. A small group shares a short story with the trained host and we discuss the text as we go. To Turn A Page is part of a global social movement that aims to bring connect people one story at a time. The act of reading aloud, with the words being heard, evokes feelings that may have lain dormant for some time. It is the words that connect us as humans. We recognise aspects of ourselves in the writing or identify with the experiences. Shared Reading Circles connect individuals with themselves and with literature. It is beneficial to everyone: any gender, any age, any ability. thousands of years. Don’t peacocks lend themselves to being drawn? Butterflies and dragonflies. Anyone for bees on your sofa? (Pictured.) Zoo animals. Pets. The weather. Trees. Waterscapes. Even the globe reminds us of where we live through representation in fabric. If you were asked to draw your own perfect pattern, what would it be? It’d be hard, that’s what it’d be! Would you narrow it down to just one favourite thing? Which colours work together? What combination of favourite things could you blend to make a coherent theme? Just how many different species of birds is too many on one design? Thank goodness for designers! ! They don’t know your tastes ! or the style of your home, but very often seem to by the way people react

Behind the scenes, Bradley’s staff read about trends, meet with suppliers and select as wide a variety of fabrics as we can to take the sting out of the design part of your decisions. All you have to do is turn up. Our team can help you understand your personal style and narrow down your choices. We can even meet you in your home to provide insight into how your favourites might sit in your own landscape.

According to the report, the impacts of climate change are already being observed across the Western Water service region, with reduced rainfall and increased temperatures in the area. Western Water’s Managing Director Jeff Rigby says that increased demand for its services from urban growth within its service region, alongside expected reductions in available supply, is one of the greatest challenges posed by climate change. “In the face of climate change, it’s clear we need to be more flexible in our approach, and as a climate-dependent service provider, we must show leadership,” he said. “Above all, we’re committed to providing a quality service to our customers with minimal environmental impact from our operations.” Western Water intends to reduce its emissions using a range of sustainable practices, including the installation of large solar panel arrays, with construction underway on a 500kw system at Melton Recycled Water Plant. Currently, the plant uses biogas, another renewable energy source, to power around 30% of its energy supply. Western Water also plans to mitigate the effects of climate change using a series of waste reduction and resource recovery programs. If you’d like to find out more about Western Water’s environmental policies, please visit www.westernwater.com.au/ environment. So, you now have a flock of gorgeous chickens Let’s look at what you need to do over Summer to keep them happy and healthy. • Chickens are thirsty and drink 1 litre each per day in summer. Chooks can die quickly from dehydration so plan weekends away carefully. • A quick 1-minute morning health check is the best way of staying on top of any illnesses or injuries that your chickens could have. • Treats such as sunflowers, corn, wheat, mixed seed, pollard, sardines or greens should be given at the end of the day. These keep them warm overnight. They are also handy to bribe free range chooks back into their home at night (remember that in Spring foxes are around all the time feeding cubs). • Chook houses should be cleaned out at least weekly • Spring and summer are key times for the tiny red mites that hide in chook houses. • Worms are essentially parasites that move into your chicken’s digestive system and can cause them to be very unwell. If you suspect worms there are a wide variety of treatments, both natural and artificial. I like to naturally worm my chooks by giving them a dose of apple cider vinegar weekly in their water and diatomaceous earth in pollard but there are a variety of treatments available. The team are busily preparing for their upcoming Fundraising Gala to be held at The Wine Collective, Macedon Wine Room on Saturday November 23, from 7.00pm. While the Gala was originally planned in support of Organisation White Ribbon Australia, the team has reacted quickly to the news of that organisation’s sudden liquidation, undertaking research of Victoria based organisations that would best benefit from their fundraising efforts. safe steps Family Violence Response Centre is Victoria’s state-wide first response service for women, young people and children experiencing family violence, offering a 24/7 support line, emergency housing, court services and the like. They are committed to ensuring all women and children are able to live free from family violence – their ultimate goal is the elimination of family violence through their Respond-Recover-Prevent framework. Chinka (HEP) Steel Solicitor, Elyse Cuzzilla said, “It is through events such as these that we inspire individual and community action against domestic violence.” Over the past three years, the firm has held minor fundraising events, which have received positive feedback and led Chinka and co to want to do something more significant. Elyse also said, “Unfortunately as a firm we have come to see that the issue of family violence has not dissipated, and we as a firm want to show our support to those services who assist those affected.” The night will feature a delicious meal, a guest speaker from safe steps, entertainment and prizes, courtesy of our wonderful local sponsors. When you make a donation, or buy a raffle ticket or something at our fundraising stall, you’re part of the lifesaving work in South Sudan, and other places clinging to life. Thank you. More than half of South Sudan’s people struggle to find enough food to eat after years of conflict that has left communities uprooted, without the security or tools to be able to farm. The International Committee of the Red Cross has distributed seeds and tools to more than 350,000 people to help them plant staples like sorghum, maize and pumpkin before the rains set in. It’s on again – Lap4Life – SWIM 3046

For the second year running, the people of the Macedon Ranges are taking the lead in what they hope will become a state-wide movement of rural communities taking action against suicide in rural Victoria. Lap4Life – SWIM 3046 is a fundraiser for Live4Life, the only mental health education and youth suicide prevention model designed specifically for rural communities, involving the whole community, with proven results. The rate of death by suicide of those that live in rural communities is 41% higher than those who live in urban areas, and its impact is devastating. The event is the brainchild of father and daughter team Sean and Kirsten McKinney. It began in 2018 at Gisborne Aquatic Centre with SWIM 2866, 2866 representing the number of Australians lost to suicide the previous year. The event acknowledges a tragic reality in which our country’s annual suicide rate outstrips our national road toll and seeks to highlight the need to promote positive help-seeking behaviours when it comes to our mental health. SWIM 2866 proved so popular that this year it will be run across two locations in the Macedon Ranges: the Gisborne Aquatic Centre and the Kyneton Toyota Sports and Aquatic Centre on Sunday 10 November. The event is proudly supported by Jellis Craig. “Live4Life is a fantastic initiative to help improve young peoples’ knowledge about mental health,” said Tom May, director of Jellis Craig, “Having grown up in Macedon Ranges, I have seen the impact that suicide has on our community. When we were approached to support Live4Life and also get behind this event, it was a unanimous yes from all our staff”. Community members of all ages are invited to participate in this year’s SWIM 3046 either by swimming, volunteering or making a donation. Swim entry costs $20 and includes a SWIM 3046 cap. All funds raised go directly to Youth Live4Life. Donations are tax deductible. World Polio Day World Polio Day is October 24th each year. On or around this day each year thousands of Rotary clubs around the world hold events and fundraisers to recognize our progress in the global fight to End Polio. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years, and we’ve made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has helped to reduce polio cases by more than 99.9 percent. From over 350,000 cases thirty years ago to only 33 cases in 2018. With its goal to eradicate polio worldwide, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is a public-private partnership led by national governments with five partners – the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In the last three years the incidence of polio caused by the wild polio virus has only occurred in two countries (Pakistan and Afghanistan). Recently Nigeria reached the 3-year mark since its last recorded case. This is the trigger for the WHO to declare Nigeria, and hence the entire African continent, polio free. This announcement will be made very soon. We’re close to eradicating polio, but we’re not done yet. It’s crucial to eliminate polio from the last two countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyse as many as 200,000 children each year. We need your support to help us END POLIO NOW. You can be a part of history. Help share the message with your family and friends and on social media. We also need funds to continue immunization and surveillance efforts. Your gift will get us closer to the finish line. The Macedon Ranges Wine Show was held at the end of September, and with over 130 entries, it showcased the diversity and quality of the region. This month’s reviews focus on the top two wines of the Sparkling class of the Show. Interestingly they are both made from single grape varietals: one Pinot Noir (Blanc de Noir) and the other Chardonnay (Blanc de Blanc). Vintage sparkling is typically made to cellar with these two examples sure to impress over the coming decade.

2016 Hesket Estate Blanc de Noir Blanc de Noir refers to a sparkling wine made from only the Pinot Noir grape, with this release made from fruit sourced from the Straws Lane vineyard that has been managed by Hesket Estate for a number of years. The wine was only disgorged this year after time on lees in bottle. A beautifully made wine that enjoys wild strawberry, oyster shell and understated citrus tones on the nose; the palate has a fine bead with flowing acidity that is integrated with just ripe stone fruits, touch of strawberry and lifted brioche that adds richness to finish. Rating: 95 | Price: $40 | When to Drink: 2019 - 2029

2015 Midhill Vineyard Blanc de Blancs A wine from a stellar vintage that continues to develop in the bottle, a light yellow to gold in colour with balanced aromatics of citrus, quince and some faint flint / nougat notes. There is an alluring structure to this wine. It is made to cellar, which is the hallmark of vintage sparkling wines, with tightly bound citrus holding court and richer stone fruits and almond meal notes there but playing a background role at the moment. The finish is long and citrusdominant, with richer lees-induced characters providing subtle generosity. Rating: 93 | Price: $40 | When to Drink: 2019 - 2029 SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ECKEL

There’s movement in the air at Hanging Rock Winery ... with the opening of their latest exhibition, Art in the Vines, Sculpture in Motion. Following on from the hugely successful Art in the Vines , Sculpture Exhibition and Trail in 2018/19, this new exhibition is far from your ordinary display of outdoor sculptures – this is art that relies on motion for effect. Some of the artists have even elected to take on Curator Malcolm Thomson’s challenge of mounting their sculptures onto poles rising up to three metres into the air. Not only is the setting at the winery outstanding, but equally as impressive is the calibre of artists that Malcolm has enlisted. Australia’s pre-eminent kinetic sculpture artist, Rudi Jass is exhibiting, as is James Parrett - winner of Bondi’s Sculpture by the Sea major prize in 2018, not to mention local artist Anton Hasell - creator of the famous Federation Bells in Melbourne’s Birrarung Marr, along with many other acclaimed artists. Start the experience by tasting Hanging Rock’s award winning wine, before choosing a bottle or two, picking up a map and heading off glass-in-hand to explore the 15 amazing sculptures on the trail! Then to complete the experience, pair your wine with a gourmet picnic box or cheeseboard, find a spot on the deck or lawns and while away the afternoon. Art in the Vines – Sculpture in Motion is on until 23 February 2020 and entry is free. The exhibition is being presented with the support of Macedon Ranges Shire Council. The Gisborne Singers’ November Concerts The Gisborne Singers have two concerts coming up in November. The choir is presenting Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, John Rutter’s Mass of the Children, plus three beautiful John Rutter songs. The choir is delighted to announce that for the Rutter Mass, they will be joined by another children’s choir. More than half of this twenty-two strong youth choir are children of choir members; and ten performed with The Gisborne Singers when they presented the Australian Premiere of Karl Jenkins’ Cantata Memoria in 2018. Privileged to have the opportunity to perform a largescale work, the children are enjoying the music and forming new friendships. Their tutors are choir members Emily Shanahan and Kitty Skeen, who are generously volunteering their time. Soloists for the performances will be baritone Tom Healey and local young soprano Rosie Cocklin. Musical Director Stephen Brockman has organised yet another fine chamber ensemble (including harp) which will accompany the choir. When you come to us, you are looking for WELLNESS, not just a nice afternoon, or a place to show off your new lycra. Our philosophy is all about Eat – Move – Breathe and live. Gua-Sha, (an item on our massage menu) is especially good for head and neck relief, and is performed throughout Asia, where it is especially popular in China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Indonesia. You may know it as “spooning” as in Traditional Chinese Medicine where ceramic spoons can be used. The word Gua-Sha has two characters. “Gua” means to rub or to scrape and “Sha” is the discolouration of the skin that appears on the surface after treatment. Gua-Sha therefore means ‘to rub out Sha”, thereby releasing blockages. Jahne.

There will be a barbeque, including sausages, hamburgers, buns and slaw for lunch, which is included in the price. We will also have egg and bacon rolls for breakfast before tee off time. The bar will be open for the sale of drinks, tea and coffee. The aim of the day is to raise funds through the event, in addition to holding raffles. We are hoping businesses might enter teams of 2, 3 or 4 to play in the competition. (We can organise others for a 4-person team). The CFA will be joined by the Woodend SES (who are also opening up their station), Parks Victoria, DELWP and the Macedon Ranges Shire Emergency Management Team. There will also be a free BBQ on from 11am to 1pm, and also some children’s activities provided. This is a great opportunity for our community to come and see the impressive facilities at the CFA and SES, and to also meet some of your local volunteers and find out more about what we do. • Have a look at our fleet of emergency vehicles • Find out about becoming a CFA and SES volunteer • Find out about our new CFA Juniors Program for children aged 11 to 16 • Discuss your Fire Plan and Summer Safety for the forthcoming fire season • And so much more! See you at the Woodend Farmers’ Market

We have started our annual pre-summer Community Safety Information Sessions, beginning with our presence at the Woodend Farmers’ Market in November, December and January. On Saturday November 2, we will also be running the sausage sizzle at the market, which not only helps provide some fund-raising for the brigade, it also gives you the opportunity to enjoy a well-cooked delicious sausage. A huge thank you to the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group for giving us this opportunity. Free Property Advice Visit Service (PAVS)

This is a free service for residents living in some of the highest fire risk areas of Victoria. PAVS focuses on the risk and preparation for people who live in identified very high and extreme risk areas – which includes the Woodend area. The CFA members that carry out the service start by making sure residents understand the level of risk where they live. We will use a special checklist to undertake a quick assessment of the property, and also provide basic bushfire safety tips and advice that covers both people and property. If you live in the Woodend area and would like to book a free PAVS please call the Woodend CFA on 5427 2356 and leave a message with a return phone number, or make an enquiry via our website www.woodendcfa.org For further information contact Captain Mike Dornau on 0409 093 935. Choirs combine for charitable Christmas concert

What’s the recipe for a perfect start to your Christmas season? Combine delicious food with beautiful music and stir in compassion and charity. These ideal ingredients will be presented on a platter in Woodend on Saturday 7 December. As well as stocking up on fresh regional produce at the Farmers’ Market, you can enjoy an inspiring concert featuring three local choirs and help vulnerable people to reach safety and shelter – in the true spirit of the season. Entry to the concert is by donation at your discretion, with all proceeds going to Macedon Ranges Rural Australians for Refugees, to support the just and humane treatment of refugees and people seeking asylum. Performing separately and together, the choirs – Woodend Warblers, Miranda’s Picnic and Takt – will present a family-friendly program of Christmas carols, traditional and classical songs, pop and world music. The concert will commence at 10:30am in the Woodend Community Centre (the hall beside the library). For more information, please contact Bec Colless on 0412 219 093. SUBMITTED BY REBECCA COLLESS

Open garden raises funds for Vanuatu school project

Woodend, November 101 years ago

“Flags this week have been flying, bells have been ringing, and people have been rejoicing with a fullness of heart and soul never before approached in Woodend.” So reported the Woodend Star, describing the November 1918 Armistice Day celebrations. “Thus came the end, after four years of world-agony, and with it a relief that has found expression in a wave of people’s thanksgiving and rejoicings, at the triumph of righteousness over the military might that the enemy had sought to force upon the world at terrific cost in human blood, ruin, suffering and misery”. “The greatest war was over. The last post would wail no more at the red burial of heroes.” “The town fire-bell rang out the glad and momentous news”. “Soon the Mechanics’ Hall was filled, and there a memorable impromptu meeting was held”. “The audience gave vent to their enthusiasm by means of patriotic songs and cheering”. “All bunting obtainable was proudly displayed, amongst it being the Honour Flag gained by the Shire for raising its quota of the last War Loan”. The following Tuesday there was a public meeting, a SUBMITTED BY ALLAN AND SHIRLEY CANN procession, a sports programme, a thanksgiving service, entertainment in the hall and a burning of an effigy of the Kaiser outside the hall. On 11 November 2019, Woodend RSL will hold a Remembrance Day service at the RSL hall from 10.30am to 11.15am, followed by morning tea. All are welcome. Prior to the 11th we’ll be selling poppies and other items through all schools and at Coles. All proceeds are for the welfare of veterans throughout Victoria. A spectacular spring afternoon saw plenty of visitors enjoy the wonderful gardens of John and Jenny Shaw’s Woodend property. John and Jenny had kindly agreed to host the Open Garden to raise funds for Rotary Woodend’s Vanuatu School project. Entry fees and funds raised from a cake and plant stall saw over $1,500 raised. “We can’t thank John and Jenny enough,” said Allan Cann, International Chair, Woodend Rotary. “Since we launched the project in June, we have been humbled by the generosity of the local community. In addition to funds raised today, people have donated privately and at our regular Coles BBQs and collection boxes in Bourkie’s Bakery.” “The Vanuatu School project is progressing well,” said Allan. “We have delivered our first order of construction materials, and the local villagers are conducting the form work in advance of pouring the slab. We look forward to sharing more information and some pictures soon.” If you would like to know more about the Vanuatu School project and how you can help, or if you would like to know more about Rotary Woodend, please contact club president Mike Hamer on 0411 549 432.

Zonta celebrates 25 years The Zonta Club of Kyneton is celebrating its 25th anniversary in the same year as Zonta International is marking 100 years as an international service organisation. The club celebrated with a High Tea at Baringo Food and Wine in Gisborne, with over 50 guests including six of the founding members of the Kyneton Club, and eight past presidents. Other guests, welcomed by President Eloise Forbes, included Mary-Anne Thomas, local member of Victorian state parliament, Macedon Ranges Mayor Janet Pearce, and Councillors Anderson and Gayfer. Members of other Zonta clubs from around Victoria also joined the celebration. The event allowed members to reflect on the club’s achievements over the past 25 years, including the development of grants for young women in our local area, a safer environment in the local courthouse for women impacted by domestic violence, the initiation of a Z Club at the local high school, and our involvement in the recently run Leadership program for young students, Making Herstory. Beryl McMillan OAM, Chair of Zonta International Centennial Anniversary Committee, congratulated the club

on 25 years of community service and support for Zonta International’s educational programs and international service projects. Speakers commented on how far we had come in the advancement of women’s rights and what we had been able to achieve, both at our local club and internationally. They also pointed out how much more must be done worldwide, to continue to support and empower women to achieve their potential and to live without fear for themselves and their children. DRIVING Bike SafeINSTRUCTIONS Macedon Ranges DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS

I was lucky enough to spend some time in the USA recently. It was the end of the summer, and on the wide flat streets of a seaside town, many people ride or walk everywhere. It was holiday time for most people, and the mood was relaxed. As a result, all road users just learnt to get along safely and it worked! Bike Safe Macedon Ranges has just launched its "Share with Care" campaign, aimed at encouraging all road users to be careful when interacting with other vehicles on the road. It’s simply about leaving plenty of room and time to pass safely. It's particularly relevant to new users of our county roads, which present different challenges to the urban environment. Who knows what is around that corner? All it takes is a little impatience or lack of concentration, and someone's dad or mum, brother or sister, son or daughter could end up in hospital or worse. Maybe we can all think about taking a little more time and care out on our roads? .Let’s all Share with Care. Look out for the mobile trailer and banners across the Ranges to remind people of this simple message. SUBMITTED BY JEM RICHARDS, BIKE SAFE MACEDON RANGES

We had a bowl and a ball on season opening day On Sunday October 6, around 20 members, including several Life Members, gathered to mark the opening of the 2019-20 season of the Woodend Bowling Club. President Mike Dornau addressed those present and gave an update on major club news including the progressing building upgrades and grass green progress. Ladies Club Champion Irene Boldiston sent down the first jack and Mens Club Champion Norm Bickerdyke delivered the first bowl of the season. Members then enjoyed a pleasant game of bowls before adjourning for afternoon tea. Hopefully the new season will be as pleasant and successful as the day. New playing tops and generous sponsors

At the Opening Day we unveiled our new Competition Tops, which will give the club a contemporary new look for the next few years, continuing with our traditional colours of green and gold. We would like to thank our generous long term sponsors whose logos appear on the tops – Coles Woodend, Barker Trailers and Bourkies Bakehouse. We would also like to thank Hunter Bowls for their assistance in creating and producing the tops. A fine start to the new pennant season

The start of the new Midweek Pennant Season was played in beautiful conditions on Tuesday October 8, with the Saturday competition starting on October 12. Woodend has teams competing in the CHBD (Central Highlands Bowls Division) in both Divisions 1 and 2 in the Midweek Competition on Tuesdays and teams in Divisions 2 and 3 in the Saturday Competition. The season runs from early October to mid-December, and then continues from mid-January to March. Last year we made the Finals in one division but did not enjoy Grand Final glory. Fingers crossed we can do better this year. Book now for barefoot bowls or your Christmas function

Last year, we had a very successful summer season of Barefoot Bowls. Several local clubs and businesses also incorporated this into their Christmas parties. Social/Barefoot Bowls is available all year round at the Woodend Bowling Club, but is obviously more fun and enjoyable in the warmer months. You can book it for a night of fun, a great party, work Christmas party, fund-raising and so much more. We can provide all the bowls you will need and can also organise catering or you can utilise our kitchen. We have a wellstocked fully licensed bar which can be opened with people to serve you, and you pay our very reasonable Crackerjack bowls club prices. Woodend Hesket Football Club finish season on high. The club finished the year on a high, both on and off the field in 2019. Our under 19.5’s footballers went down to Rupertswood by 15 points in the grand final. A great effort by the team and something they and the club were very proud of. Our under 19’s netballers also had a great season, unfortunately losing to Macedon in the preliminary final. Congratulations on another great season by our under 19 team. This was topped off with Gracie Reid winning the league best and fairest. Thanks to all the players across all teams, lets all stick together and have an even more successful 2020! At the league presentation night Woodend-Hesket was awarded club of the year in the Riddell District Football Netball league. Creativity on display at Sacred Heart College Twilight Open Expo was held on Thursday 17 October at Sacred Heart College. The Expo was a showcase of three fundamental components of the personalised learning experiences on offer at the College – the Year 9 Expo, Year 8 Making a Difference (MAD) Projects and Year 10-12 Arts & Technology Exhibition. While each of these areas show a great level of application by the students, the display that always surprises visitors the most is the Year 9 Expo - largely due to the dynamic and creative approach taken by these students, which continues to go beyond expectations. Students are required to develop a product, prepare a portfolio outlining all stages of its development, and then create a stall to promote

their product/topic of interest during the Expo. The project provides an opportunity for a broad range of skill development, including – innovation, design, learning about and practicing time management (throughout this lengthy project) and ongoing problem solving (as challenges generally occur at all stages). The project is also a great way of celebrating the unique qualities of our students that may not be displayed in a typical classroom environment. Year Level Leader, Ms Hayley Galloway explained, “this year’s Expo included the theme ‘Our Sustainable Future’ which provided a further challenge in preparing their work, but pleasing resulted in students having a conscientious approach to the use of

materials. A further benefit of the Year 9 Expo is the fantastic opportunity it provides to involve students, parents and often the broader community, in its various stages. There’s a great sense of pride from all involved in seeing the final work on display.” Year 9 students described the project in many ways; Ella said it was rewarding, Tamika said she learnt interesting things on a topic she’d previously known nothing about and Xavier said it was a good opportunity to finally create something he’s often thought about making. All agreed it was lots of fun. If you missed seeing it this year, why not come along to the Twilight Open Expo in 2020. SUBMITTED BY JENNIFER BALDWIN ,SHC
