CHRISTMAS RIBBONS
Now a tradition, the Christmas feature for advertisers is displayed in colour for the first time. (Page 2 & 39 & 40). It provides our advertisers a platform to thank customers for their support, send Seasons Greetings or advise of holiday hours. THANKS FOR SUPPORTING OUR ADVERTISERS
Father Christmas has once again appointed The Lions Club of Woodend to be one of his agents in Australia. Your children can have their personal letters to Santa answered by sending them to Santa, C/- Lions Club of Woodend, PO Box 25 Woodend 3442. Imagine their excitement when they get a letter from Santa Claus and he knows all about them! Father Christmas would appreciate to receive your letters before Monday 21st December allowing him to reply before Christmas Day. Please enclose a self addressed envelope, so Santa can send a personalised return letter. Be assured that the letter will deal only with generalities and will be non-committal in its promises. The intention is to bring joy – without committing parents to any specific purchases. Take the time to sit down with your little one and show them the letter writing process, it may be the first lesson on letter writing they get. Work out the message and have them practice the wording before starting on the good copy. Once everything is sorted it’s time to write the final draft in their neatest handwriting. Submitted by A. Downie for Woodend Lions

The Children’s Market Santa Claus is coming to town Christmas is in the air and the big man himself is heading into town with Woodend’s newest family fiesta – The Children’s Market. The inaugural indoor/outdoor market kicks off on Saturday December 3 with pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting and plenty of gorgeous gifts and stocking fillers from clever crafters, designers and knitters. Families can catch Santa on his Aussie stop-over for a family snap with the talented Smith and Archer. On offer is a range of snazzy polaroids, digital photos, snow domes or Christmas cards. Or fill your belly with some festive cheer and grab a cone from Ice-cream Social or sweetas-can-be home-baked goods and coffee. Wonderwoman Children and Toby the Teddy will give market goers the chance to learn how to save a life at free workshops. Teddy Toby will use fun activities to teach children what to do in an emergency and Wonderwoman will give practical first-aid tips and host fun-filled book reading of “Is this an Emergency? Ambulance?” And the grown-ups can brush up on their skills with morning and afternoon first aid classes. The Children’s Market is on the first Saturday of every month and is proud to support our amazing local community by donating partproceeds to selected local charities and the CFA. If there are any particular areas of first aid you would like to learn about,

WOODEND CHILDREN’S PARK
The 2007-2009 th community driven project, Woodend Children’s Park, marked its seven year anniversary this month. Hosting hundreds of children’s parties, Christmas parties, and the famous Woodend Rotary Halloween Event, the park has brought together so many happy occasions. As part of its vision, it has galvanised friendships and ensured a healthy, free and vibrant activity space for the community. Working on a project such as this united the entire town with the mission to simply create a living legacy for the children of the area. It was an exercise that empowered and re-skilled a group of people who were out of the workforce while rearing young children, and allowed new comers to the town to make lasting friends with people who have been in the area for generations. The Council and other community groups continue to see the Woodend Children’s Park as a source of inspiration, and in fact the lessons gained from this project have been shared many times by those wanting to rebuild after bushfires, or overseas in impoverished schools, or in neighbouring towns. To coincide with the anniversary that the Park was officially handed over to the Macedon Ranges Shire Council this month, Jane and Julie from the project hosted Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AM Governor of Victoria with a wander around the park. This visit represented how well regarded the community’s efforts are seen even years after the handover, and that a shared community effort holds a true value that doesn’t fade.

Woodend Red Cross This month I would like to extend a letter of thanks.
Woodend Red Cross is a group of people who give what they can of themselves and their time to help others – doesn't that sound like a bunch of do-gooders on the rampage! Most of the ‘good works’ aren’t immediately visible unless there is a flood, fire, earthquake or other disaster which brings our people into the field to help however they can. Behind these scenes are the bakers, the knitters, the blood donors, the tin rattlers, the phone chain participants, those who support the victims of abuse, the financial donors – I'll stop now or this will be a small book. Everybody knows they deserve our thanks. This letter of thanks is to all the people who support us in our community. So many businesses, cake makers and buyers, raffle ticket buyers, the ‘keep the change’ people, in fact, another small book. Of course, this in turn helps those for whom everyday life is less than easy and joyful, something that most of us tend to take for granted in Australia. Know that you are part of contributing to local, Australian and International Red Cross and the tireless volunteers in the field. SO, THANK YOU, WOODEND, and a happy festive season to all. Christmas Toy Shop For past six years the Combined Churches of the Macedon Ranges have organised a Christmas “Toy Shop” to assist families living in the shire who might struggle to afford a Christmas gift for their child. Last year we helped over 140 families. The Toy Shop relies completely on the generosity of our community, to donate gifts to stock the shop. Families are referred to us by local support and welfare agencies and are given a personal invite to attend the shop and pick out toys for their children. For families who are facing challenging times, Christmas can become an incredibly stressful, lonely and sad season. The Toy Shop gives struggling families the opportunity to enjoy what others may take for granted – to choose something special for their child and be able to give it to them on Christmas morning. Donating to The Toy Shop is a fantastic opportunity to embrace the true Christmas spirit and reach out in generosity and love. The community has always supported the Christmas Toy Drive with tremendous generosity, With so many families in need, we hope residents, businesses and people who work in the Macedon Ranges will continue that tradition this year.” This year we’re seeking donations of toys for boys and girls aged 0 - 18. Gifts need to be new and valued around $20. We also welcome donations of books, plush toys and smaller items suitable as stocking fillers. We particularly fall short in gifts, books and stocking fillers for older children each year.
Spend your summer evenings at the Rock
Grab some snags, pack a picnic and spend your summer evenings at Hanging Rock. Throughout December, January and February, Hanging Rock Reserve is staying open until 8pm on Thursdays and Fridays, giving you a chance to do more of what you love – spending time in one of our region’s most spectacular spots. Council’s Chief Executive Officer Peter Johnston said he hoped the extended summer hours would encourage more visitors to the natural landmark. “Whether you’re a local to the region or visiting the Macedon Ranges from elsewhere, make time to stop by and spend some time at Hanging Rock,” he said. “There’s plenty of walks, wildlife and history to discover, with the reserve really buzzing during the summer months. “We’ve got the annual Hanging Rock races on 1 and 26 January, along with the annual Classic Car Display in February, and musician Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band making his welcome return on Saturday 11 February.” Hanging Rock Reserve is open every day (except Christmas Day) between 9am and 5pm. Entry fees are $4 per pedestrian, $10 per car, $20 per minibus and $50 per coach. Regular visitors can also purchase an annual pass for $67 that can be used during normal operating hours, excluding major event days. To find out more about Hanging Rock or a range of other local experiences and entertainment, visit mrsc.vic.gov. au/hangingrock, drop into a Visitor Information Centre in Kyneton or Woodend or call 1800 244 711.
How to Donate:
Gifts can be dropped into the offices of Cobaw Community Health in Kyneton and Woodend. Monetary donations are also being accepted, used to purchase toys to fill any gaps in the shop. Gifts need to be supplied by December 14 to allow time for sorting and setting up of the toy shop. To arrange collection of gifts or further information contact Georgina Harvey 0404 442 891.

Cheers to a great year! Another action-packed year has come and is almost
gone at Woodend Neighbourhood House. 2016 has been amazing with the House continuing to grow with over 12,000 people coming through our doors. We’ve revamped our reception, overhauled our website, welcomed new volunteers to the team, and seen our community lunches become even bigger and better, all the while offering all of our great courses, workshops, and rooms to hire. We already have exciting endeavours on the horizon for 2017, one of which is our front garden makeover. We were thrilled to win a grant from Western Water and cannot wait to transform the front of the House into a welcoming, sustainable, and edible garden with wicking beds. We’ll be calling all green-thumbs and working-bee enthusiasts to help create this space in February, so stay tuned! Speaking of volunteers, if you’re keen to give some of your time at the House in the New Year get in touch and we’ll send you out a volunteer pack. And, speaking of the New Year will your resolution be to start a hobby or try something new? From wine appreciation and belly dancing to languages and bike maintenance – we’ve got something for everyone. Check out our term one brochure in this edition of The New Woodend Star for some inspiration. ‘Tis the season to have a summer holiday so our reception will be closed from 16 December and will reopen 23 January. However, you can always enrol online and we’ve even got Paypal now to make online payments a breeze. From everyone at the House we wish you a safe and joyful Christmas season and look forward to seeing you in the New Year!

Many of these people who have fled from ISIS and other situations of extreme violence are not allowed to work or to collect any financial assistance. These are people who have lost absolutely everything and are entirely dependent on the kindness of ordinary Australians to help them with basics such as food, blankets and accommodation. The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Footscray provides food to around 520 asylum seekers every week - and this food comes from collections such as ours all around Victoria. We are asking the people of Woodend to donate a bag of rice, a bottle of shampoo or a packet of green tea to our collection. Dec 2016 / Jan 2017 National winner
Deborah Stidwell has won the prestigious award for Australian Practice Manager of the Year. She was presented with this honour ahead of other state finalists at the recent dinner concluding the Australian Association of Practice Managers’ 2016 Conference. Deb is Brooke Street Medical Centre’s Chief of Operations where she has led the team from strength to strength since 1998. Practice staff are absolutely thrilled for Deb. They have decorated the Practice with photos, streamers, balloons and flowers to celebrate. In speaking to her team, Deb said “whilst I know this is an individual award, I would never have won it without all of you.” She said that Brooke Street Medical Centre and sister practice New Aged Care “is a wonderful team of people, who care about the community and the aged and are prepared to go the extra mile for their patients and residents.” Deb said that going through the process over recent months from being the state finalist to becoming the Australian winner has given her a lot of time to reflect. “I had the opportunity to reflect all that WE have achieved together over the years, and believe me it’s a lot. This is a special place to work and one of which I am very proud.” The Directors of Brooke St Medical Centre say there is no more deserving winner. Doctors Peter Ferguson, Richard Bills, Alison Killoh and Chris Atkins have lauded Deb’s capacity to manage such a large and vibrant practice and maintain her good humor, friendliness and have an open ear for all staff at all times. They note that some of Deb’s key qualities include respect for all staff, great leadership skills, dedication to quality of care and an ability to lead new programs to meet the needs of our local community. Woodend Rotary was pleased with the community support of the 7th annual Halloween Community party. The weather was pleasant with a brief shower but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the large crowd in attendance. Thanks must go to all the Woodend Rotarians and Scout leaders from 1st and 2nd Woodend Scout groups who helped plan the event and provided some great entertainment and the sausages. The following people and businesses very generously supported the event not only this year but previous years and help make a Woodend Halloween a great community activity. ●● • Fairhurst Conveyancing | Major sponsor ●● • Newrap Costume Hire for the Fairy Floss ●● • Blackbird Cakes for another amazing cake ●● • Cobaw Community Health |Red the Clown ●● • Macedon Ranges Signs | photo boards ●● • JJs (Chloe’s) Jumping castles ●● • Coles Woodend ●● • Collier Office & Business Assist ●● • Woodend Newsagency New features this year included the photo boards and the jumping Castle which attracted a lot of attention. Orange lights will transform the historic town hall façade from 25 November to 10 December as part of the Victoria Against Violence campaign Go Orange! The campaign aims to engage and educate the wider community about the link between family violence and gender inequality. The campaign encourages Victorians to wear or display orange in their homes, neighbourhood or workplace. Orange is the colour designated by the UN Secretary– General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign. As a bright and optimistic colour, orange represents a future free from violence against women and girls. The campaign is timed to coincide with the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism against gendered violence campaign, which starts on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November) and ends on International Human Rights Day (10 December). Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said the state-wide campaign complemented local work to prevent violence against women and children. “Lighting up the Kyneton Town Hall orange symbolises that Macedon Ranges stands together with the rest of Victoria to prevent family violence and promote gender equality,” she said. In the last five years, Council has led several projects and activities to tackle the underlying causes of violence against women in the Macedon Ranges such as gender inequality, rigid gender stereotypes and behaviours that contribute, condone or excuse violence “Gender inequality is internationally recognised as a key underpinning driver of violence against women and continues to affect women at all stages, and in all areas of their lives,” Cr Anderson said. “While we are working towards building a society based on respect and non–violence to increase women and children’s safety and wellbeing, we still have a long way to go judging by the latest statistics”. According to information from the Victorian Government ●● In the year ending June 2016, the number of family violence incidents went up by 10 per cent to 78,012 ●● For the year July 2015 – June 2016, the number of females affected by family incidents was three times the number of males affected ●● • More than 74 per cent of women with a disability have been victims of violent sexual encounters at some point in their lives ●● • Women with disabilities are 40 per cent more likely to be the victims of domestic violence than women without disabilities Continued on age 18 page 17
●● Over 500,000 women have reported that their children have seen or heard partner violence ●● One in four women have experienced violence. If you or someone you know is experiencing family violence, help is available. Call 1800 RESPECT – 1800 737 732. In an emergency call 000. Elephant-fighting Bees? How do you stop a 4500kg elephant from eating and trampling on your crops and raiding your stored food? Employ the humble and friendly bee. It’s worked in Africa, could it be replicated in Sri Lanka? Kylie Butler a PHD student started a program with the help of two of the founding members of the Wooden Bee Friendly Society, David GormleyO’Brien and Emma Collins. David and Emma volunteered to travel to Dewagiriya, a remote hillside village 3 hours’ train ride northeast of Kandy, Sri Lanka to provide bee handling advice. The basis of the program is to surround the farmer’s crops and homes with a simple wire and suspend the bee’s hives on the wire.
hives. They are shy but best of all give you half the sting.” said David GormleyO”Brien.
“The elephants can be very destructive when they come down from the forests at dawn and dusk to raid the local farms” “A farmer could lose a whole crop in one raid.
Once the elephant attempts to cross If an elephant was especially hungry the wire the hive is disturbed and the and raided the stored food, it would bees sting the elephant in retaliation. David and Emma found the village of Dewagiriya made up of small rice farms of two acres with a high reliance on government subsidised pesticides for crop management. Poorly managed pesticide use can be terminal for bees and add an unforgiving climate of six months extreme dry and six months’ extreme wet makes bee keeping a very tough gig. “The local variety of bee Apis Cerana, is very different from our European Honey Bees. It’s a tiny bee, half the size of our honey bees, produces less than half the honey and live in very small
push down a wall of the house to get to the larder and the family placed at risk of being killed in the process.” Emma observed one house half destroyed, and the farmer forced to move his whole family into a crude tree house out of reach of marauding elephants. But the local villages understand they have a responsibility to maintain the elephant population of the area and live in harmony with them. Emma advised, “David and my roles were to provide classroom and field training on modern methods of hive management, capturing wild bees, bee diseases and hive health improvement

by diverse crop plantings. It was essential to build up the confidence of the locals in handling bees. We had to teach how to minimise the impact of pesticide use on the bees.” David and Emma meanwhile learnt traditional Sri Lankan bee keeping methods including improvised bee smokers from a wad of dry combustible material encased in green leaves. David said, “The role of the beekeeper was often given to the women of the village with many participating in the program.” After ten days of hard work at the village, David and Emma had developed a great understanding and mutual respect with the local villagers. They helped the participants become competent bee keepers, who could set up elephant guards and as well as producing honey for their own medicinal purposes or a small amount of sales.
Will the program be sustainable?
Only time will tell.. David and Emma felt the exchange of knowledge and skill with the local farming community a highly valuable exercise. “Woodend Bee Friendly Society hopes to maintain a continuing working relationship with the community of Dewagiriya with WBFS members assist these wonderful people on a regular basis.” said David. New arts program a big win
ADVERTISEMENT
Labor Member for Macedon is encouraging arts groups, societies, venues and local councils to apply for funding to attract the best performances in an effort to strengthen regional touring in more places across the state. Grants of up to $15,000 will be available to support the presentation of a single show or live event, a series of shows or an annual program. Ms Thomas said that “arts touring brings significant benefits to towns, to communities and to artists and Victoria has a strong history of regional tours by major companies as well as independent artists.” Funding will be offered through three grant rounds in 2016-17. St Mary’s Trivia Night a win!
We had over 90 people in the Norma Richardson Hall testing their grey matter and having a great time. In the end the Psychedelic Hedgehogs of Awesomeness won the night – and had the most interesting team name. We raised over $2,500 which means that we are well on the way with our fund raising activities to replace our ‘holey unholy floor’. Kyneton District Health amongst the State’s best
The Macedon Ranges community has a hospital to be proud of, with Kyneton District Health just announced as a finalist in the 2016 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards. KDH has been shortlisted for both the Premier's Small Health Service of the Year, and Excellence in Community Engagement for its innovative Tea for Ten feedback project. The external recognition builds on the recent award as the Macedon Ranges Business of the Year. The hospital is two years into a period of reform driven by financial imperatives, quality and safety standards, and community relations. “We’re now well on the road to implementing our quality framework. We’ve delivered a break even budget, and engaged our community that is becoming increasingly confident in the best care we deliver in hospital and at home,” said CEO Maree Cuddihy. Over the past year Ms Cuddihy was a panel member for a state-wide review into the quality and safety of hospitals across Victoria, which enhanced KDH’s focus on its own care and services.

New & updated facilities to better serve the community The Geburrh Centre Project Committee have been busy putting together information for the newly elected Council, with the aim of gaining their support for the improvement of the old squash courts and market precinct. The Committee also reported positive meetings with both the Federal and State local members. “We are pleased to pass on to the Woodend community that the project has broad support at all levels of government” said spokesperson Jane Walduck. “We are at the stage where we’re mapping out funding opportunities, and will be starting applications quite soon. We have had good community feedback by way of the online and paper format survey, but more ideas and inputs are always welcome. Detailed design is still a way off, but momentum is building behind some ideas that will be great for the site”. The committee plans to meet with Council before the end of the year, and looks forward to a very positive 2017. Submitted by Matthew Sanderson, Group Committee.

•Wine • The Macedon Ranges Wine Show was held in late September and showcased both the quality and diversity of the region, in particular the quality of the Riesling’s was exceptional across the board. If you haven’t tried a local Riesling now is the time to stock up prior to the warmer months 2015 Zig Zag Road Riesling Zig Zag was established in 1972 just outside of Malmsbury and was one of the first vineyards in the area. The unirrigated vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Riesling. A light yellow in colour, the nose combines floral citrus blossom with wet slate and pickled ginger, the palate has well defined citrus fruit and an attractive chalky texture. Delicious and elegant now with plenty of further development ahead. Rated: 94 | Drink: 2016 - 2027 | Price: $25 www.zigzagwines.com.au
2013 Rowanston on the Track Blanc de Noir Rowanston on the Track is a small winery in Glenhope that produce Pinot Noir, Riesling, Shiraz and Merlot. The 2013 Blanc de Blanc is a good example of Blanc de Noir and represents great value at $25. The wine is a light salmon colour in the glass and has a fine persistent bead, the nose gives plenty of bright red berry fruit with understated oyster shell notes. The palate is fruit forward with wild cherry, strawberry and a touch of stone fruit. There acidity to finish gives texture and length. Drinking well now and over the next few years. Council elects new Mayor Cr Jennifer Anderson is the new Mayor of Macedon Ranges Shire Council for 2016/17, elected at a Special Council Meeting in Gisborne last night. The West Ward councillor, who was reelected for a second term at last month’s council elections, previously served as Mayor of the shire in 2014/15. At last night’s meeting, Councillors decided not to appoint a deputy mayor. It is the first time in the shire’s history that Council has opted not to have a deputy mayor. Cr Anderson thanked her fellow councillors for “having faith in me to be your first Mayor in this new Council”. “It is a great role, representing Council at many occasions and community events and bringing knowledge from many areas back to the Councillor group,” she said. “One of my favourite parts is the Mayor’s official capacity to preside over citizenship ceremonies for people who choose to make Macedon Ranges their Australian home. “This is a great new Council, with a diversity of skills and backgrounds and a desire for transparency in decision making and improved community consultation.

“I hope that even though people may not always agree with the decisions made by this Council, they will understand the process and know that they have been listened to and their thoughts and ideas have been considered." The first Ordinary Council Meeting of the new Council will be on Wednesday 23 November. For more information, see mrsc.vic.gov.au/ councillors Submitted by L Manton for MRSC

Woodend Primary School is excited to welcome Diana Ellis as our new Principal. Diana started at the beginning of term four. Our previous Principal Andy Kozak - has moved to be Principal of New Gisborne Primary School after nine years at Woodend Primary school. Diana was the Principal of Lancefield Primary school for the last six years, and prior to that was a teacher in the region. 2016 is a year of many changes and challenges for our school - including the recent grant of $2.2 million for capital and grounds works and the development of our next 3-year strategic plan. Diana has leapt in with both feet and is working with staff and the school community on these and other projects. From day one Diana has been out about the school getting to know students, parents and teachers and becoming a part of our community. The school bids a fond farewell (and best wishes for the future) to Andy Kozak. Throughout his nine years as Principal, Andy brought a high level of respect to both the school and himself (within school and the wider Macedon Ranges communities). During his time he lead a number of important educational initiatives, adding whole-school programs focussed on achieving the best student outcomes and extending into specialist areas such at STEM and DigiTech. Andy was to be found at most school extra-curricular activities - including working bees, community events, sporting events and music performances - and coked innumerable sausages on the school barbecue. Woodend Primary would also like to thank Jo Emond for her excellent work as Acting Principal during term three; we wish Jo the best for the future. Submitted by Brad Dean, School Council President

MACEDON RANGES FUTSAL ARE VIC CHAMPS Futsal (indoor soccer) fever has erupted in the Macedon Ranges with three local teams recently making state finals and a record number of Macedon Ranges Futsal (MRF) players chosen to represent Victoria at the national championships next January in Sydney. The Australian Futsal Association (AFA) held its Victorian state titles in Ballarat late October and early November. The U10 team Wild Victory from MRF won their section winning every game. Although MRF has won regional titles in the past this is the first MRF team to win a state title. Congratulations! The U14 team Power Ranges (pictured) had a magnificent tournament. Their love of futsal and great friendship keep this team participating at a high level. Unlucky to lose the semi final 3-2 to the eventual grand final winners Ballarat, this team is sure to be back next year to contest the cup. The very consistent and persistent U16 team Woodend had another successful tournament making the quarter finals. The team has made finals for the past three years and sets an example to the younger teams for showing great skill and determination over a long period of time.

Get court up in tennis this summer The weather is slowly getting warmer and the temperature has definitely been rising at the Woodend Tennis Club this month. Last week we launched our inaugural ANZ HOT SHOTS program at the club and are pleased to report that we have had over 100 kids participate in the sessions so far. For $25 a family, kids are getting a chance to pick up a racquet for the first time, learn new skills and have a whole lot of fun. With so much interest we hope to run a similar program in 2017.
Woodend Tennis Club Kids play ANZ HOT SHOTS for the first time
The adults have also been having a ball with our second year of Fast4 tennis. Fast4 is a mixed social competition, with simplified rules and lower compression balls which makes it an easy way to get back into tennis or improve your technique in a fun, relaxed setting. Almost as important as the tennis is the weekly fancy dress theme, music play list and dinner menu. So far this season we’ve visited France, Bollywood and the Wild, West, West! If you want to learn more, pop down a Wednesday night and witness the action from 7.30pm. There has also been some serious play going on down at the Club, with this year’s Club Competition. The courts have been buzzing with Mens and Ladies Singles and Doubles, as well as a Mixed Doubles section. Our Grand Final Day takes place on Sunday 27th November from 11am onwards. As well as fantastic tennis, there will also be a wine and beer tasting and spit roast. It’s a great chance to come down to the Club and see our best players in action. Our thanks to Brooke Street Medical Centre for their ongoing support of the competition. If you are considering dusting off your tennis shoes or are interested in learning more about the club, please visit our website at woodendtennisclub. org.au or like us on Facebook to keep up to date with upcoming events, coaching and competitions. DON’T RELY ON WATER SUPPLY FOR FIRE SEASON Western Water is warning Woodend residents to have an independent water supply ready if they plan to stay and defend their home this fire season. If electricity is cut or water infrastructure is affected by fire, pumps and other equipment may fail, cutting the mains water supply. If there is extremely high demand for water from customers and the CFA during a fire, water pressure may also drop. Residents should consult their local CFA about options for an independent water supply and plan ahead. Western Water is also doing all it can to prepare for summer, with backup generators ready and water storage tanks at high capacity to cope in case of fire. Residents can also help the community to be prepared for fire season by ‘adopting’ a fire hydrant. Keep any fire hydrants near your home free of debris and vegetation, and if you think a hydrant needs maintenance, call Western Water to report it. You can also send Western Water a message on Facebook, or fill in a form at WesternWater.com.au. Submitted by K Smith| Western Water

Plan and prepare. THE REASONS ARE BLACK AND WHITE.
It’s your responsibility to be fire ready this summer. Prepare your property, fire plan and emergency kit now. When hot, dry, windy days are forecast, check Fire Danger Ratings daily and monitor warnings via local radio, the VicEmergency website and app. Leaving early, before a fire starts, is always the safest option.

Preparing and maintaining your property for the fire season
Environment events: discover the natural world
As we approach another fire season, Council is reminding residents to make adequate preparations. Here are some simple tips you can follow to make sure you are fire ready: ●● Slash grass and keep it under 75mm high ●● Rake up and remove dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark ●● Remove any rubbish or material that is likely to cause, maintain or promote a fire ●● Store inflammable liquids well away from the house ●● Store woodpiles away from the house ●● Place metal flyscreens or window shutters over windows ●● Keep gutters clean of leaf litter ●● Remove all noxious weeds from your land ●● Face LPG cylinder’s vent pipe away from the house and store securely in an upright position ●● Prepare your bushfire survival plan. Property inspections and notices Council’s Fire Management Officer will continue to inspect properties during the fire danger period, and will issue fire prevention notices to those properties that pose a hazard. There are heavy penalties for owners that fail to comply with conditions outlined on the notice, and properties are expected to be maintained to the required standard throughout the fire danger period.
Whether you’re declaring war on weeds or looking to get up close and personal with local wildlife, Macedon Ranges Shire Council has a range of free environment events on offer designed to get you out in nature. On Saturday 3 December rural land owners are invited to come along to Bald Hill Reserve, 281 Pipers Creek Road in Kyneton to find out more about how to manage invasive weeds. The free workshop, to be held from 10.30am until 1pm, will share tips on how to identify and treat problem weeds, and also provide demonstrations on the best techniques to eradicate weeds from your property. The workshop includes a free lunch, and is presented in partnership with Upper Campaspe Landcare Network. Discover creatures of the night on Saturday 10 December at a free, family-friendly spotlight event at Bald Hill Reserve. Join Council environment officers and the Friends of Bald Hill Reserve from 9pm to 10.30pm to spotlight for night birds and native animals such as sugar gliders and ringtail possums. Participants should bring warm clothing, a torch and sturdy footwear. For more information on the events, or to book, visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/environment-events, or call 5421 9660.
