Woodend Primary celebrates Solar Stage 1
Woodend Primary School (WPS) has reached a major milestone in its campaign to switch to renewable energy: half of the school’s huge solar energy system has been installed. Less than a year into the Here Comes the Sun campaign, 68 solar panels with a total capacity of 17kW are already generating clean electricity for WPS. ‘By going solar, we lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce global warming. Our power bills also reduce, so for decades to come, our school will use the savings to enhance our facilities and resources – a wonderful legacy!’ said WPS Principal, Andy Kozak. Here Comes the Sun is a community-led and -funded initiative. So far, 32 local families, groups and businesses have each sponsored at least one solar panel, worth $275. Funds have also been raised through sausage sizzles, a hot cross bun drive, a dinner-dance and other activities; and WPS has invested money from its Building Fund. continued on page 2
