Get On Your Bike

Let’s Ride For Renewables Communities across the Macedon Ranges will have a chance to actively show their support for clean, local renewable energy and investment in sustainable jobs by participating in the region’s first “Ride for Renewables”. “Everyone is welcome, including families, kids, friends of friends and cycling enthusiasts. If you have a bike and you believe this region should be allowed to make a real contribution to producing clean energy to help fight climate change, please join the Ride for Renewables on October 18,” said Ralf Thesing, President of the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group. The family friendly bike ride will cover a relaxed 13 kilometer route from the Black Forest Timber Mill on Black Forest Drive to the site of proposed community-owned wind turbines in the pine plantation off Fingerpost Road and return. “The Ride for Renewables is a campaign to show our decision-makers the community deeply supports new, clean energy industries that would make the most of our natural resources such as wind and solar,” he said. “For example, a proposed local, community-owned wind farm with three 2.5 megawatt turbines could power up to 4500 local households. A 2012 feasibility study showed a three turbine facility, in the pine plantation south of Woodend, would be technically and financially viable. The idea is modelled on the successful Hepburn community wind farm south of Daylesford. “This project would benefit our region economically and environmentally but the project has been shelved and all wind facilities in Macedon Ranges Shire banned by the state government. While that ban remains in place, our community is missing out on millions of dollars of investment and the opportunity to do our bit in the effort to slow global warming.

We need to show them this just isn’t good enough,” said Mr. Thesing.“We urge the community to join the Ride for Renewables and send our message to Spring Street loud and clear.” Make the date in your diary: Ride for Renewables, 18 October 10.30am, Starting at Black Forest Timber Mill on Black Forest Drive to the site of proposed community-owned wind turbines in the pine plantation off Fingerpost Road. There will be a photo opportunity before the return ride to Black Forest Timber Mill. (13km round trip) Everyone is welcome for a fun and relaxed day out. Lunch and refreshments will be provided at the starting and finishing point. Lunch and insurance is included in the registration cost: $25/person, & $40/family. Bookings are essential for catering purposes – get them now at www.mrsgonline.org.au/r4r. For further details go to www. mrsgonline.org.au or R4R@mrsg.org.au. *Please note: the Ride for Renewables is on gravel roads and more suitable for mountain and hybrid bikes than road bikes. The Ride for Renewables is organised by the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group and is supported by Friends of the Earth’s Yes2 Renewables Campaign and Woodend Cycles.

Woodend, has already registered to participate in the statewide shopping event. She hopes Support Small Business Day will help bring both new and familiar visitors to their store on Saturday 4 October. “We just opened up in July, so we're still a really new business. It's been a great few months, getting to know so many of the locals," she said. Specialising in prestige, European and late model car servicing and repair, The Garage aims to cater to locals who would otherwise travel long distances - usually to Melbourne - to have their cars serviced. "With over 30 years experience in premium car servicing, we're offering the same level of quality you'd expect from a big business in the city, but being a small family business, we're also focusing very hard on customer service," Andrea said. This includes offering the free local pick up and return of vehicles before and after servicing, or a courtesy ride to the town centre. For those that prefer to wait on-site during a service, there's free customer wifi and coffee. "Living locally, we understand the needs of locals," Andrea explains. Andrea hopes other small businesses will get behind the campaign, and that local shoppers will get out and support local traders on Saturday 4 October. "We'd love for people to come down and say hello on Support Small Business Day." she said. Small businesses can register online now, for free, to receive a support pack full of promotional materials to display in-store, and tips on how to create Support Small Business Day special offers for their store. Businesses who register before Wednesday 1 October will also receive a special activation card that will allow them to accept Bendigo Bank-sponsored gift cards on the day. Shoppers can search the Support Small Business Day website for participating businesses, and also register their details to be in the running to win prepaid gift cards and other prizes. Support Small Business Day is an initiative of the Victorian Coalition Government, with Principal Partner Bendigo Bank. There are currently more than half a million actively trading small businesses in Victoria, contributing approximately 30 per cent of the State’s output and sales, which represents a significant economic benefit to our State. Woodend Kindergarten to celebrate shade-sail unveiling Community Morning Tea, Saturday 11 October Woodend Playgroup will celebrate its 35th Anniversary with a community morning tea at its Forest Street facility from 10 am – 12 noon on Saturday 11 October. The event will welcome past and present members of Playgroup, as well as previous attendees of the infant welfare centre and kindergarten that used the facility between 1958 – 1979. Interested members of the wider Macedon Ranges community are also welcome! “Woodend Playgroup has been an integral part of community life in Woodend for 35 years. We would like to take this opportunity to reminisce with members old and new and to ensure their stories are heard for generations to come, celebrating the wonderful facility that was home to Woodend’s first infant welfare centre, kindergarten and playgroup,” said Faye Cormick, President of the Woodend Playgroup Committee. “The Woodend Historical Society and, in particular, Ruth Hodgson, has been instrumental in helping us locate members of the community who have had an extensive involvement with Playgroup over the years, as well as assisting with old documentation and photographs,” added Faye. Playgroup started as a small play area within the infant welfare centre and was called the ‘Woodend Infant Welfare Playgroup’. When the infant welfare centre moved to the current Cobaw Health building in 1979, Woodend Playgroup became the sole tenant of the Forest Street facility. “Our history is fascinating and deserves to be shared and remembered,” said Faye. To share your memories, stories and images of the facility as an infant welfare centre, kindergarten and playgroup, please email Woodend Playgroup: woodendplaygroup@gmail.com We hope you can join us for morning tea and We look forward to welcoming you to Woodend Playgroup on Saturday 11 October! Kindergarten families and sponsors are invited to celebrate the installation of our new shade sail from 12.30pm to 1.30pm on Tuesday 7th October. Please come along and enjoy scones and cakes-Hopefully the sun will be shining. The shade sail – bought with the money raised this year – replaces the beautiful elm tree that used to shelter children in the sandpit. Kindergarten president Mark Constable said: “We are delighted with the shade sail. It looks great and has arrived just in time for summer. “It wouldn’t have been possible, though, without a lot of help from local businesses. “We are hoping that many of our supporters can join us for afternoon tea on 7th October so that we can thank them for their generosity.” Submitted by Richard Padgett

Local gardens open

Two local gardens in Woodend, "Overwood" and "Woodlands" will open their gates to the public on Sunday 30th. November to raise funds for the local Scouts at 2nd Woodend. Both properties adjoin the historic White Lodge in Whitelodge Road and were formerly pasture paddocks with a dairy and path running between them. Both properties feature significant eucalyptus specimens over 80 years old and both gardens have been created over the past six years, but that is where the similarities end. "Overwood" is mainly a grass garden, featuring many specimens of ornamental and indigenous grasses, planted to cope with both drought and wind. Overall, it is designed as a modern family garden and people may enjoy viewing what can be created in a 10 acre space with minimal upkeep, but where proportion in design has been the most significant factor. The garden at "Woodlands", however, is vastly different and offers the visitor a beautiful collection of garden species; each carefully nurtured and placed in photographic composition within its 5 acres. Colours, textures, and scents are all considered in a beautifully flowing garden, where outdoor rooms flow seamlessly into another, a botanical splendour. Coffee, tea and a Devonshire scone or a barbecue sausage will be for sale at both properties. Funds raised on the day will go towards the construction of a new Hall for the 2nd Woodend Scouts. The gardens will be open from 10.00am to 4.00pm and there will be an Entrance charge of $6.00 per garden or $10.00 for the two gardens. Whitelodge Road is accessible via Old Lancefield Road, Woodend.

The Annual Show of the Macedon Ranges Art Group is set to be bigger and better than ever. Now in its 19th year, the annual event will feature over 200 art works from some of the finest artists in the region. According to group president, John York, the group has attracted many new artists and now encompasses a broader range of painting styles and techniques as well as a diverse range of sculpture and ceramic works. The increased number of art works has necessitated a change of venue with the 2014 event to be held at the Woodend Community Centre in the heart of beautiful Woodend. The new venue also provides additional space for the popular painting demonstrations conducted throughout the show. The exhibition runs over the Melbourne Cup Weekend commencing with the grand opening on Friday evening 31st October and concluding Tuesday 4th November. Art lovers and collectors will be keen to attend Opening Night and be amongst the first to snap up a bargain. The invitation only event kicks off at 7.00pm with light refreshments and snacks. Entry is free but places are limited To secure your invitation contact John York at 041 750 6934 or email macedonrangesartgroup@gmail.com The show continues daily from Saturday to Tuesday 10am to 4-30pm so be sure to call in and enjoy a complimentary tea or coffee while meeting the artists, viewing a demonstration and browsing through some of the finest art in the Macedon Ranges. Magpies: friend or foe?

It’s magpie season in Victoria, which means that breeding males may become territorial and protective of their nests, warns Macedon Ranges Shire Council. In late winter and early spring each year, magpies have eggs or young in the nest. As territorial birds, they are known to swoop people riding their bikes, walking their dog or running. If residents encounter this “swooping” behaviour, it’s important to remember that they are just protecting their territory. Magpies are native birds to Australia who have survived well in urban environments. Swooping is part of the magpie’s natural behaviour, so the best thing to do is avoid the location where the magpie is nesting for the next couple of months. Chasing magpies only provokes them and exacerbates the problem. Moving the nest won’t fix the problem either, as they tend to come back to the same spot each year Magpies are protected under Victorian law which means they cannot be trapped, injured or moved to another area. How many koalas can you find at Hanging Rock?

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is seeking volunteers who are interested in contributing to koala conservation to join in this year’s koala count at Hanging Rock on Friday 3 October 2014. The annual koala count, in its thirteenth year, assists in monitoring koalas in the Macedon Ranges by gathering quantitative data on the local koala population. It complements a range of other fauna monitoring projects that are currently underway, including the installation of nest boxes, wildlife cameras and hair collection traps in bushland reserves throughout the shire. Those who participate in the koala count will walk around Hanging Rock Reserve in small groups recording sightings of koalas. Macedon Ranges Shire Council Mayor, Roger Jukes is encouraging everyone to get involved. “You never know what you are going to see. While the count is all about finding and counting koalas at the Rock, you might also be lucky enough to see a powerful owl, kangaroo or wallaby as well. “Also, this year’s count will coincide with school holidays, so why not bring the entire family along,” he said. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. If you are interested in participating, please register before 12 noon on Wednesday 1 October 2014 by phoning 5421 1468. Backyard bird count

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is inviting residents and community groups to get involved in Birdlife Australia’s inaugural Aussie Backyard Bird Count during National Bird Week (20-26 October). Anyone can take part in the count which only takes 20 minutes and will provide information about the health of local bird populations and our environment. It will also assist in examining the impact of pest species such as Indian Mynas. Getting involved in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count is easy: sign up on Council’s website, mrsc.vic.gov.au/birds or download the Aussie Backyard Bird Count App (Apple and Android). It’s then a matter of choosing a location like a backyard or sports oval and spending 20 minutes recording birds seen in that area on the online form or via the App. A variety of fact sheets to help identify local bird species in the shire have been developed by Woodend Landcare and Woodend Bird Observation Group. These are available for download on Council’s website, mrsc.vic.gov.au/birds. Following National Bird Week, Council will use the data collected to create a series of maps showing bird populations around the shire which will be made available online later this year. Hanging Rock planning underway

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has commenced work on the development of an Environmental Management Plan for Hanging Rock that will guide future environmental and conservation works at the reserve, including the East Paddock. Macedon Ranges Shire Council Mayor, Cr Roger Jukes said Council is working with local environment groups and other stakeholders to identify issues and opportunities at the site. “The development of the plan will help us to establish a set of principles and an action plan that will focus on conserving and enhancing the Rock’s environmental values, whilst balancing the important role the site has to play as a recreation and tourist facility. “It will also help to guide the allocation of resources so that Council and community groups can plan various works and projects, and apply for external funding where needed,” he said. The plan will provide direction for everyone involved in managing and maintaining Hanging Rock, including Council, environmental groups and user groups such as recreational clubs and event hirers. “Over the next few months, we will be working with community user groups and relevant stakeholders to develop the draft plan before placing it on public exhibition for broader community input in early 2015,” Cr Jukes said. The plan is being funded by the Victorian Government and is being prepared by ecological consultants, Practical Ecology, who have extensive experience assessing the natural values of similar sites and preparing management plans for bushland reserves. Council and Climate Change Many people have been contacting me, or commenting within their submissions to council, on the issue of climate change. Council has taken part in projects with Cr. Jennifer Anderson, surrounding councils, and within the Macedon Ranges Shire Councillor Loddon Mallee South region on this subject, but much of this has been around adaption rather than mitigation. Climate change mitigation is harder. It costs money now to fund projects that may not see their full benefit, or return upon investment directly to council, and thus rate payers, for some years. Processes such as using alternative energy sources to power our buildings or street lamps, using recyclable materials for some of our signs and street furniture, cost money and it can be difficult to agree that the initial cost is worth spending in order to set a good example and reduce our carbon footprint, along with potential cost savings in the future. I am always interested in your ideas about how we might reduce our carbon footprint as something council could take the lead in, and foster in the community, and encourage you to look at any current policies we have up for review that could benefit from a change in thinking. The budget process is always a tough one, so start sending in your ideas as soon as possible, so I can look into whether any are feasible within the next budget year. The more ideas we have to reduce our Shire's impact on climate change, the more likely it is we will be able to fund at least one project each year. Long term planning for our future will cost us money today, but cost us our beautiful Macedon Ranges if we do not. Warm regards - Jenninfer Anderson

Feeling Framed has made a colourful splash on the Woodend retail streetscape since opening next door to the post office four years ago. More than a decade before the business made Anslow Street home, it was already taking shape in the old school house north of town in the capable hands of Kay Brabham. Kay, who was born into an artistic family, worked as a graphic designer before finding a passion and enthusiasm for preservation framing. Taking over the local art supplies store has since proved a comfortable fit with the framing business. From local art shows to the nation’s prestigious Doug Moran and Archibald portrait prizes, Kay and husband Grant enjoy their quiet albeit significant contribution to showcasing artwork in its many humble, imaginative, sentimental and spectacular forms.

Kay Brabham (above) and husband Grant operate Feeling Framed

They are rarely surprised or fazed by the things they are asked to frame, though a 1.8 meter snake skin offered plenty of technical difficulties and gave Grant the creeps! “We have framed many unusual items such as bullet casings and bottle fragments and personal items found on recent trips or brought back by brave soldiers from Gallipoli, French and Belgium battlefields,” says Grant. “A banner travelled to Rome with parishioners of St Ambrose Parish community for the Canonisation of St Mary MacKillop in October 2010. This was framed with tens of hundreds of signatures from the Woodend community, all testifying to the prayers and healing of a very brave local boy Jack Simpson from his Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Multiple Sclerosis.” Observing tears of joy from customers when they collect their framed pieces and listening to the stories informing the paintings and objects, as well as supporting the emerging creativity of young people, are the best aspects of being in business, according to the Brabhams. While their working roles are largely interchangeable, Kay’s meticulous skill as a scraperboard artist has no doubt helped her attention to detail, colour and design. Some of her work is displayed at the shop with assorted work from other local artists, a feature they hope to grow. Feeling Framed is a member of the 2014 Macedon Ranges Art Trail. Obituary Bruce Kingsley Jones, 25 May 1928 – 8 June 2014 Bruce Jones lived all his life at Cheveley the family farm, on the Five Mile Creek two miles north of Woodend. He is characterised by integrity, gentlemanly ways, cheeky grin, sense of humour, optimism, love of life and courage when dealing with tough times. Bruce sold his first animal at eight that he walked to Kyneton market. Bruce was a willing volunteer for milking and anything to do with animals. There were always stories of family times, fun and making money by walking around rabbits and trapping water rats for the pelts. Bruce’s aspiration to be a farmer was evident early. In accordance with the wishes of his mother he was educated at Caulfield Grammar, funded by his own farming activities. Bruce met the vivacious, dark haired beauty Maureen Vistarini in the early 1950s. She and Bruce twirled their way through local dances, shared their passion for Hawthorn Football Club and commenced married life in February 1953. Back then Bruce was primarily growing potatoes, fodder crops and raising sheep. Bob, his horse, provided the pullingpower for the annual crops of spuds and oats. The tractor and electricity and arrived in the late 1950s. Despite the tractor Bruce worked his cattle with his horse, Whisky matching the folklore of the old cattlemen. Bruce’s approach to farming was innovative responding to weather and markets. There was the chicken poo experiment with one hundred head of yearlings, the stinky silage years because it was good tucker, the artificial insemination phase, the grain feeding years with high turnover and small margins and the strip feeding of turnips and dust. Bruce relished cattle sales, whether at Kyneton, Newmarket, Ballarat or Bendigo. He often topped Newmarket sales with cattle he bred. He also relished the mateship between famers, agents, carriers and buyers.

Bruce served as a councillor of the Shire of Newham and Wooded for three terms, including one year as Shire President. Bruce regarded his legacy as the first planning scheme, a doctor based in Woodend and a farm rate. He also contributed to education, serving on the Kyneton High School Council and pursued the establishment of Braemar when Clyde School for Girls was closed. Bruce served on the Hanging Rock Reserve Committee of Management and is a life member of Racing Club, a Rotarian and Paul Harris Fellow. He was part of the initial push to buy the paddock to preserve and protect Hanging Rock and its views Bruce lived the last twenty years with compromised health. Skin cancer treatment was part of Bruce’s life however an ear reconstruction and radiation therapy were required to deal with an aggressive cancer in 1991. Then there was the hay bale accident on 1995. Bruce faced these challenges supported by Maureen side and fabulous medical care. He sold a last mob of cattle in May, through Maureen’s willpower and the help of good friends and neighbours. Bruce is survived by his wife, Maureen, his children Greggory, Denise and Alan (in law), his grandchildren Catriona, Philip (in law) Eliza and Alexander and his great granddaughter Annie Maureen. 15 Years of Brewing for Holgate family

Well it’s snuck up on us out of the blue, but it’s actually our 15th Birthday this October. When our daughter Emily turned 16 in September it reminded us of the heady days in 1998 when she was born and we were in the planning stages of starting up our brewing company. Phew, talk about taking on a bit too much! During the September of 1999, 12 months later, two semi-trailers with shipping containers were rolling down Quarry Rd and on into South Rd where we began the install and commission of our brewery in a newly erected shed on our property. The first brews were put down during the week of 12th October 1999, and we kegged, bottled and sold the first batches in November 1999. It’s been a whirlwind 15 years, full of ups and downs, successes and stresses in a very competitive industry dominated by multi-national breweries. Other milestones have passed us by – renovating our Hotel and opening it as our “cellar door” in 2002 ; moving the brewing operations with improvements to our High St pub location in 2006 and significantly increasing our fermentation capacity in 2012. We’re proud to have survived in this environment, and to have been one of the pioneers in the Australian craft industry before the current boom emerged. We’re proud also to have served the Macedon Ranges region in providing many jobs and employment over the years, and grateful for the hard work of all our staff. We say thanks too, to the many good beer drinkers out there who have continues on page 4

Calling out for Volunteers Thanks to everyone who came to the ‘Show Your Love’ morning tea in early September. I hope you saw the pictures in the local paper (Macedon Free Press), it was lovely having the candidates for Macedon there and getting to talk to them about the important work that neighbourhood houses do in the community. I hope we made an impression. We couldn’t have done it without our fantastic volunteers. Our volunteers help out at our front reception desk, some of them do archiving and filing, some help with computer upkeep and house upkeep and some of them are part of the governance of the house. If you need to do some volunteer work for your Centrelink requirements or your children are off to school next year you might consider offering some of your time to us. It’s a great way to get involved in your community, make new friends, build your skills and share your knowledge. We need volunteers for our reception desk for next year, shifts are three hours (or more if you prefer) and we will pay you back with good company, belly laughs, feeling like you are contributing to your community and one free course (with some conditions) for every 12 months of volunteer service. We are also always looking for people who are interested in being on our Committee of Governance. You would be committing to monthly meetings (about 2 hours), reading reports and information beforehand (about an hour), some sub-committee work (on and as needs basis) and a real sense that you are helping your community by being part of the team that sets the strategic direction of the neighbourhood house. Come in now to express your interest, learn the ropes and get involved! Contact Jill Scanlon or Angela Van Dam on 5427 1845 if you want to talk about volunteering. Oh, and look out for our Term Four brochure in this edition of the New Woodend Star. Submitted by Jill Scanlon - Coordinator

October 2014 Cardiovascular risk

Some people are more at risk for heart attack and stroke than others. At Brooke Street Medical Centre, we may use the cardiovascular risk calculator to determine your level of risk for a cardiovascular event or disease. When there is no known existing heart disease, the calculator may be used for people of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander background from the age of 35. Other Australians may have the calculator used from age 45. In using the calculator, a number of key factors are considered to determine your risk score. This score identifies your likelihood of having a cardiovascular event within the next five years. Identifying risk early helps us to work with you to manage your health - hopefully before an event occurs. The higher the risk, the more intensively we need to treat, without delay. The National Vascular Disease Prevention Alliance promotes the use of this multi-factor calculation. It has been found to be more accurate than the use of individual factors to determine risk for heart attack and stroke. Ask your GP about this at your next appointment. Hopefully together we can reduce the number of events like stroke, heart attack and other blood vessel diseases.

Flu & other viruses Lots of us have been unwell this winter with a range of viruses. Influenza type A has been identified along with colds and other respiratory tract infections. These diseases often get passed on via airborne germs which are released into the air through coughs and sneezes. They can also be passed on via objects contaminated by droplets from coughs or sneezes or touched by dirty hands. There are basic hygiene techniques you can use to reduce the chances of passing these diseases on to others:  Cover coughs and sneezes (eg. cough or sneeze into a tissue)  Dispose of used tissues in rubbish bins  Wash hands after sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose – wash hands carefully with soap and water  Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth (germs can then be transmitted from the hands to objects that other people touch or pick up).

When visiting the clinic, masks are available for infectious people at reception counters. Alcohol gel pumps are also available at the counters for everyone to clean their hands. Please help reduce the risk to other patients and staff.

Gender – not always easily identified Services and organisations often ask us to identify our gender. For many of us, this seems a straight forward question. For others, gender is not clear or a comfortable fit with our physical characteristics. In acknowledgement of this, our patient registration form will include the gender options: “female”, “male” and “other”. At times this may conflict with other service questions. For example, the cardiovascular risk calculator discussed on this page asks for gender as it produces different risk scores for men and women. For those identifying gender differently from their given physical characteristics or choosing not to identify a gender, we aim to work as well as we can to accommodate your individual needs. Vocational Service in Rotary

Rotary has themes for each month of the year, and in the month of October the theme is Vocational Service. In Rotary, Vocational service has a focus on two key areas. The first is to build vocational service appreciation, to promote and increase understanding of vocational service across the wider community. The second is vocational service program development, which aims to identify, nurture and expand programs in order to ensure sustainability. Some of the local district programs overseen by the Vocational Service area of Rotary include; • The Victoria Police Leaders Mentoring Program is a tripartite partnership with Victoria Police, business and Rotary by which business and Rotary mentors provide mentoring to leaders in Victoria Police. The program is entering its eighth year with some exciting changes which will ensure the program delivers directly to Victoria Police community engagement strategy. • The Life After Stroke is a program coordinated in partnership with numerous stakeholders, including the Stroke Association of Victoria. The programs aim is to provide practical support to identified stroke survivors, supporting them to re-enter the workforce through vocational mentoring and links with established industry, education, training and recruitment networks. • The Vocational Program Databank contains details of programs, both local and international, that may be of interest and tailored for local introduction at Rotary clubs.

• The Vocational Service Engagement area introduces training, information and other resources to ensure that Vocational Service Chairs in each Rotary club is supported and empowered to develop a robust Vocational Service program. At Woodend Rotary, examples of Vocational Service conducted in recent times include; • A Woodend Rotarian offered his vocational skills and experience in painting to support the Rotarians at Work Day project to repair and refurbish the picket fence on the approach to the Woodend railway bridge. • Another project, developed by Rotarians with ambulance and health experience, supplied two Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) to the BP service station and the Victoria Hotel in Woodend. The introduction of the AEDs was accompanied with the necessary training for staff at both locations. • A student careers evening has been supported by Woodend Rotarians in partnership with the local secondary schools to provide an opportunity for VCE students to discuss occupation choices with professionals from many and varied areas. If you believe you can offer support to any Woodend Rotary projects, are keen to learn more or get involved in your local community please contact the club via email woodend@rotarydistrict9800.org.au, or visit our website: http://portal.clubrunner.ca/9589. Birthday Party Magic.

The invitations have been sent and RSVPs received. The cake is iced and the candles are in place. The decorations are up and all is ready - the guests arrive and the party is in full swing.

But suddenly nothing makes sense any more. Everything you thought you knew no longer holds true. Everyone’s eyes are open wide and mouths agape. Adam Laurance is performing his Magic Birthday Party Show! Things appear, only to disappear again, a giant stick appears from an empty bag, the magic birthday card appears but it makes no sense, the birthday child is out there helping but everything gets stranger and stranger. There is a chicken, an egg (which came first?), mysterious pieces of rope and finally a birthday cake is produced from nowhere. Want an unforgettable birthday party? Then this is the show for you. Take photos, video the show if you like (and play it back later in slow motion to try to work out how Adam did the tricks!) and you can even learn some magic in a workshop. Call Adam on 5427 1839 or go to adammagic.com. au. Adam lives here in Woodend so you get a special local price. Call now for a quote. You will be pleasantly surprised, amazed and astounded!

Drive-In & Fireworks Night

St Mary’s Primary School in Lancefield is holding its annual Drive-In Movie & Fireworks Night in Lancefield Park on Saturday 15th of November 2014. This year the movie to be screened is “The House of Magic”: Thunder, an abandoned young cat, stumbles into an old mansion during a storm and is adopted by its owner, eccentric magician Lawrence - to the annoyance of Lawrence's cranky pet rabbit, Jack, and mouse, Maggie. When Lawrence is admitted to hospital, his real-estate salesman nephew tries to sell his house from under him forcing Jack and Thunder to unite to stop him. The gate will be open at 6.00pm. Prior to the screening of “The House of Magic”, we have a giant inflatable slide, lucky dips and face painting organised to entertain the kids. There will also be fairy floss, a BBQ, and a canteen with hot chips, hot doughnuts, drinks and more. Following the Drive-In Movie, which will commence as soon as it is dark enough, there will be a fireworks display which lasts for approximately 15 minutes. Tickets pre-paid by 7th November cost $50 per vehicle and are also entered into a lucky door prize draw. (Late bookings or on-night entry is $60 per vehicle). The event is the school’s major fundraising event for the year and the Parents & Friends Committee would sincerely like to thank our 2014 major sponsors: Bendigo Bank-Lancefield and Romsey Community Branches, Chess Property Consultants, RTA Robot Technologies, Romsey Fresh Wholesale, Humvee Excavations & Grange Cleveland Winery. For all enquiries or bookings please contact Shelley Knott on 0433 146 333. Submitted by Regina Marr on behalf of St Mary’s Primary School Lancefield.

Out of the Shadows

Sponsored by Life Line, Out of the Shadows held a very successful walk and information event on Sunday 14th of September 2014 to highlight and raise awareness about mental health issues and suicide. Suicide does not discriminate by gender, age or in any other way, devastating family, friends and the wider community. A local group came together to create an opportunity for Macedon Ranges residents to walk, united, in an effort to shine a bright light on the prevalence of mental health issues and the impact of suicide in our community. The idea behind the walk on Sunday, September 14 was to give cause for reflection, recovery, hope and prevention. It is one of many ‘Out of the Shadows’ events being held nationally following an initiative of Lifeline for World

Suicide Prevention Day on September 10. Acting Chair of the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group, Noelene Ward, said suicide not only remains the leading cause of death in Australia for people aged 15-44 years old, but recent ABS data suggests that in the Macedon Ranges, the rate of suicide is trending upward which opposes Victorian and National trends. Lifeline is a 24-hour telephone crisis service available every day of the year to anyone, anytime and from anywhere in Australia for just the cost of a local call. Megan Condron, Jo Gray and Peta Rankin Macedon Ranges Basketball Association – Buffalo Stadium and Woodend Hawks @ Sunbury. Basketball has been a way of life for these three sisters since their primary school days. Growing up in suburban Roseanna, the Leffanue sisters say “how incredibly lucky we were”, to be introduced to the game by friends. Mentored by national basketball identities Michael and Lorraine Kapnoullas, through the Diamond Valley Association, the girls quickly developed a deep love of and talent for the game. Megan and Jo both went on to be selected for Victorian State level teams for U16s and U18s; and during her Year 12 studies Megan was selected for the Melbourne Tigers in the WNBL. All three continued to play at University and into adulthood, for the sheer enjoyment of the game. Peta played State level netball as well. The sisters credit the commitment of their parents to partly explain their success and devotion to the game. Marg and Bob, now also resident in Woodend, drove their daughters quite literally all over the state. “We were a one car family, I don’t know how they did it”, says Megan with a laugh. The girls had a long association with Woodend because their mother was originally from Bendigo, and their parents

had owned land in the local area throughout their childhood. Peta and her husband Rob shifted from Melbourne first, and then Megan and Jo and their respective families also moved to Woodend around the same time, about nine years ago. The three sisters are today heavily involved with our local basketball association. Megan is the President, Jo the Treasurer and Peta is the sporting pulse website administrator. Their combined brood of eight kids are all following in their mothers footsteps and a new generation of basketball players have taken to the court. Our local basketball association continues to grow and develop, under the guidance of the sisters and a dynamic executive committee. Lots of new opportunities are being explored for players and coaches of all levels. Hoop Time is an Auskick style junior development program aimed at 6-9 year olds. A recent training day has seen over twenty of our local parents and juniors attain Level 1 accredited Coaching standards. Local squad teams are training for Victorian Country Championships. And this summer, twelve ‘Woodend Hawks’ teams will play in the bigger Sunbury association, which is a great opportunity for players to further develop their skills. Our local summer season at Buffalo Stadium commences in Term 4. Megan estimates that approximately 100 hours of volunteer time is clocked up every week by the association. This includes committee time, coaching and parents scoring for the many games across the different age groups. This fantastic dedication by volunteers ensures the continuing success of the association. The recent ‘Woodend Hawks’ trophy presentation night was a great celebration of the club and was attended by 174 parents and players. From the junior ‘hoop time’ players, through the age groups right up to Open Men’s and Women’s, there are lots of opportunities for players of all ages and standards to be involved. The Midweek Ladies competition on Wednesday mornings has one dedicated player who recently turned sixty. Registrations for the upcoming Summer Season close shortly. Grading Games will commence the second week of Term 2 and aim to select evenly balanced junior teams. If you are interested in finding out more information about playing or getting your kids involved; please contact Megan Condron on 0421 054242 or at president@mrba.org.au . Written By Marion Coulson

Macedon Ranges Shire Council will lift burning off restrictions on small blocks during October to encourage residents to be proactive in their fire preparedness this year. Restrictions that were introduced last year as part of Council’s new Local Law No.10 will be lifted for residents living on land less than 4,000 square metres (one acre) to enable them to prepare their property for the fire season. Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Director of Assets and Operations, Dale Thornton, encourages residents on small blocks to clean up fine fuels such as leaves and twigs. “The fire season has been predicted to arrive earlier and last longer this year so it is important that residents begin their clean up sooner rather than later. “After the devastating fires that swept through the shire in January and February, we want to make sure that everyone is well prepared leading up to summer,” he said. Burning off must only be for fire prevention purposes and should not cause a nuisance to neighbours. Green waste can also be taken to Council’s transfer stations free of charge. Council’s Fire Management Officer will begin inspecting private properties for fire risk in late October. Fire Prevention Notices will be issued to those properties that pose a serious fire risk to their neighbourhood. For more information about preparing your property, visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/fireready Submitted by E. McCormick

Gold Medal for local olive oil

The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria Fine Food Awards have been announced and our local Campaspe Bend extra virgin oil has won the OLV 004 Gold Medal. Campaspe Bend Extra Virgin Olive Oil is one of the few estate-grown Affiorato olive oils in Australia, and is proudly sold at the Woodend Fruit Market and the Village Larder in Woodend. In 1999, farm owners Michael and Elizabeth Peck planted their first olive trees on the red and grey soils along the Campaspe River. When the trees commenced fruiting they decided to have a friend and mentor, Tony Siciliano, process their olives using the rare Affiorato method. This method involves making a paste of the olive fruit without crushing the pips. As the oil rises to the surface of the vegetal water it is skimmed off, leaving the skins, flesh, stalks and pips to sink to the bottom of the vessel. This gentle, cold process produces pure, extremely high quality oil, sought after by olive oil connoisseurs for its delicate and peppery flavour.

A Brazilian odyssey for Woodend lovers of the arts

Do you know that the Woodend community helps to support a flourishing arts society? The Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society (ADFAS) Central Victorian region draws one third of its membership (currently around 180) from the Woodend area and would like to see that number increase. If you would like to share your passion for the arts with other like-minded people in our community, then come along to the next ADFAS lecture on Thursday 16th October at 7.15pm at Kyneton Town Hall. UK Landscape Architecture specialist Marilyn Elm will speak about the works of Roberto Burle Marx (1909 - 1994). He was Latin America's most influential 20th century landscape architect and an internationally renowned figure in the modern arts. Marilyn’s talk traces Roberto's flamboyant and colourful legacy from Rio de Janeiro to the iconic Brazilia.

Submitted by M Peck

RobertoMarx left a flamboyant and colourful legacy

A multi-talented artist, Roberto Burle Marx was witness and contributor to a broad form of expression. Trained as a painter and musician, he practiced simultaneously in diverse media, including drawing, painting, etching, sculpture and landscape design. He collaborated with most Brazilian architects on the national and international scenes, including Oscar Niemeyer, Rino Levi and Lucio Costo and associated with Marcel Breuer and Le Corbusier. This is the last of eight events scheduled by ADFAS for this year. A charge of $30 for non-members includes a light supper and wine after the lecture. Join this Brazilian odyssey - you will be made very welcome. Enquiries to Dee Briscomb on 53487629. Submitted by Marion Waugh-Young and Norma Aplin, ADFAS Central Victoria Committee members

Woodend Cemetery News

The Right of Interment There is a common misconception that when a plot or niche is purchased within the Cemetery that you own that portion of land and it is yours to do with what you wish. In fact it is not the land you are purchasing, but the “right” to inter the remains of a loved one. The Cemetery Trust manages the Cemetery grounds and all public cemeteries in Victoria are situated on Crown land. Funds paid to the Cemetery go towards the ongoing care and maintenance of the grounds and assets, such as paths and driveways. A portion of these funds is allocated to a perpetual maintenance fund which will be used for the maintenance of the Cemetery once it is full and no further interments can be made. As managers of the Cemetery, the Trust has the responsibility to maintain the grounds in a good and safe order; to keep it free of hazards and litter, and ensure the safety of visitors as well as contractors and staff of organisations undertaking works or interments within Cemetery grounds. The Trust also manages and approves all interments and the installation of monuments, headstones and plaques. These tasks are undertaken primarily with volunteer labour. Trusts do not receive Government funding to manage cemeteries, apart from any Grants applied for to assist with the completion of specific projects. There is no guarantee that a Grant application will be successful. The owner of the Right of Interment Permit, or Deed, is responsible for maintaining any memorial established at the place of interment (i.e. grave or niche) in a safe and proper condition. These responsibilities are detailed in the Permit. The Trust is able, under the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003, to make and enforce rules, policies and procedures to ensure the safe operation of the Cemetery. Anyone wishing to become a Trust member is welcome to apply to join by contacting the Secretary on 0417 011 300. New members are selected and appointed by the Department of Health, with the term of appointment being three years. The Trust meets four times per year and members are appointed on a voluntary basis. Malmsbury Village Fayre,

Sunday 16th November The third Sunday in November is always special in Malmsbury; it is the day of the Malmsbury Village Fayre, a great day for the whole family. “Fayre is an ‘old English’ word meaning food and wine celebrated in a small country village, and this is why we chose the old spelling,” President of the Fayre Committee, Greg Miles explains. This year’s Fayre will be extra special as we have the local Zingaro festival musicians combining with us to present a rich programme of Eastern European music, great for listening and even better for dancing! The Malmsbury Village Fayre aims to provide visitors with a wonderful chance to taste the wines, produce and foods of the local region in the magnificent setting of the beautiful & historic Malmsbury Botanic Gardens. Guests can walk along the Coliban River, marvel at the amazing 1860’s bluestone viaduct, sample some gourmet preserves, wines or honey and relax in the country sunshine or under the many majestic trees by the lake. The children will be well catered for with lots of entertainment, dancing, face painting, creative and fun things for them to do. Mark the date in your diary and bring the family along for a great day out! Submitted by Sandra Aitken

Net Medical Expense Offset (NMETO) New Centrelink rules affecting Government age pensions & other benefits Do you need to take action now? If you’re over 55 and potentially eligible for a Centrelink benefit upcoming changes may affect you. • New rules as from 1/1/15 change the way that superannuation based pensions affect entitlements to Centrelink benefits that are subject to an income test (such as the age pension) • The new rules only affect people who start receiving their Centrelink benefits after 1/1/15, or who start or change their superannuation-based pensions after that date. • If you might be eligible for both a Centrelink benefit and a superannuation-based pension next year, you may want to take action this year to maximise your Centrelink benefits in the future. A financial adviser can look at your individual circumstances and make recommendations to help you consider whether to: • Start a new superannuation based pension now before 1/1/15; or • Make changes to an existing superannuation based pension before 1/1/15; or •Apply for Centrelink entitlements that you are not receiving

Congratulations to Macedon Ranges Running Club

The club received the exciting news that they are a finalist for the Outdoor Active Recreation Initiative category of the Victorian Government's 2014 Community Sport and Recreation Awards.

Another busy month for the Club with over 160 participants across the shire entering our Start Running program. Everyone will come together in Gisborne for the first milestone of running 5km on Sunday, October 26. followed by a breakfast at Dixon Field 1 with family and friends being encouraged to come along and help celebrate.

(L) Julie Arnephy & Steve Jackson at Anglesea 100km (M) Journeying between Romsey and Lancefield. (R) Woodend runners on a beautiful Winter morning

Nominations were open to Victorian community and active recreation clubs, groups and individuals. Recognising the work of clubs, teams, groups or individuals who have succeeded in enabling more people to participate in outdoor and active recreation through a single initiative, event or longer-term project/initiative/program. This is fantastic and shows the recognition our club deserves for our encouragement for the community to be involved in outdoor recreation activity through the Start Running program. Every member of our club participates in this encouragement but special thanks must go to our Leaders, Co-ordinators and Assistants who make it all happen by volunteering their time and enthusiasm. The winner will be announced from the three finalists at the awards ceremony to be held at the MCG on Wednesday 1 October 2014.

The Annual General Meeting will also be held after the run so members please consider committee participation. Four behavioural policies were adopted which completes a very sound structure for the Club and aligns us with the Government's Healthy Sporting Environment status. The Lancefield-Romsey branch is up and running (excuse the pun) and welcomes new members ~ see the website www.macedonrangesrunningclub.com for contact details. Thanks to the support of Cobaw Community Health another ten of our leaders were first aid trained as part of our safety strategy. Many of our runners are targeting fun runs; with participation in the Coburg Harriers fun run, planning the Melbourne Marathon festival and a recent good time at Anglesea as part of the Solomon Trail series. We are investigating a Parkrun event at Gisborne. Parkrun is a nationwide free 5km weekly event which needs the collaboration of clubs and organisations in the area to ensure its viability. It is a popular event which would introduce participants to the sporting and fitness activities available. Any individual, club or organisation interested in this project please contact Lindsay 0418 582 014. Submitted by L Sharpe and S Franzen

Communities underestimate bushfire risk CFA has carried out post-season community surveys in bushfire-prone areas since 2009 (Black Saturday) to understand how people view the bushfire risk and how well prepared they feel. Many people have a high general awareness of the bushfire risk, but a significant proportion of people underestimate the level of risk at their property. Over the years the CFA has conducted similar research, and there has been a consistent pattern of results. Although around 80% of people believe it’s likely that a bushfire could occur in their area and around 70% believe there’s a large threat of a bushfire in their area, less than half the people rate the actual level of bushfire risk at their property as major or extreme. Why do so many people underestimate the actual level of risk? People’s risk perception is influenced by a range of social, environmental and situational factors. The concept of risk is highly subjective. Some people have an unrealistic belief that a bushfire won’t affect them even though they know they live in an area where bushfires can occur. Others who have done all the preparation they need to do for a bushfire often believe the risk is lower.

If you answered yes to any of the above, you may have a hearing loss.

CFA Chief Officer predicts a dangerous fire season CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson recently spoke about predictions for the upcoming fire season. He said that the seasonal outlook indicated an active fire season, particularly for areas in central, north and western Victoria. “For us in CFA it’s quite significant. Firstly it reminds us that August has been a very dry month across much of Victoria,” he said. “Rainfall predictions suggest it's going to be a drier than normal season.” A huge thank you to the Woodend Neighbourhood House for their recent very generous donation. Yes, we know that for the Chinese 2014 is The Year of the Horse, but for our Society it has definitely been The Year of the Book! Many readers will already be familiar with Sylvia Boxshall’s magnificent publication “They Went to War” which tells the story of all the men and women from the district who served in the First World War. Sylvia has now completed another equally important work Name, Rank and Number which tells the stories of all those from the district who served in the Second World War. With help from many in the community, Sylvia has produced another landmark publication which we believe is not only an important record for our own district, but one which makes an also makes an important contribution to Australian histology as a whole. The amount of time and research that Sylvia has given to these two huge books, not forgetting her smaller publication, Our Men at War which relates to the Boer War, is incredible. Name, Rank and Number will be available at the end of this month, in plenty of time for Christmas. As both the 1st and 2nd World War books are large and heavy, we recommend that you call in to the Court House on a Wednesday or to Collier Office and Business Assist at other times, to see them and make any purchases. While on the subjects of books, we have just done another print run of a transcription of My Side of the Mountain by Betty Jean Barned which relates to the history of the Hesket, Cherokee and Kerry area and a reprint of the small book of poetry Hanging Rock Memories and other Poems by Denis Fitzgerald. We also still have copies of our best sellers Echoes of the Past – a history of Newham and Cobaw by Jannyse Williams, Time Gentleman Please, Hotels of Woodend and the surrounding District, again by Jannyse with delightful illustrations by Joycelyn Moreland, and Jane Holth’s two important publications Forging History and In Search of Ashbourne. Copies of the history of St. Mary’s Church – Walls two Feet Thick – and The Walkers and Miss Sim are also still available. With spring at last in the air, if you are interested in exploring the district The Walkers is well worth having on your shelf. It documents the walks taken by a group of friends around the Shire and beyond and may introduce you to some new places to explore! I make no apology for advertising these publications. Yes, their sale does bring income into our Local History Centre but most importantly, they place on record accurate district history which, if it is not recorded, can so easily become distorted or worst still, totally lost as the years roll by, “History is for human self-knowledge – the only clue to what man can do is what man has done. The value of history, then, is that it teaches us what man has done and thus what man is.” R. G. Collingwood, the famous English Philosopher wrote this not long before he died in 1943. These days some may object to his use of “man’ rather than ‘humankind’ but few. I doubt will disagree with his opinion!

Woodend Teddy Bear Show th Sunday, October 26 St Ambrose Hall 10am-4pm

Teddy Bears derive their name from former American President Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname was "Teddy". In 1902, while on a bear hunting trip, President Roosevelt refused to shoot a captured bear, deeming the action an unsportsmanlike act. Roosevelt ordered that the bear be put down to end its pain. A cartoon depicting the incident inspired a New York candy shop owner to seek the President’s permission to name two toy bears “Teddy’s Bears” and display them in his window for sale. The shop owner, Morris Michtom, went on to mass produce the bears and form a toy company. German craftswoman Margaret Steiff took her first large orders for stuffed bears in 1903. And so began the international affection for teddy bears.

Colour in Teddy for a chance to win a handmade artist bear valued at $200 and/or tickets to the Woodend Teddy Bear Show. Entries due at Collier Office & Business Assist, Woodend by Thursday, October 16.
