There is nothing quite like a country fair – especially when it comes to the food, fun and family entertainment to be had! The 2015 Carlsruhe Country Fair, to be held at the historic Carlsruhe School House in November is the perfect opportunity to soak up some genuine country spirit with activities ranging from working dog demonstrations and a pony club display to a treasure hunt, ‘veggie man’ competition and old-fashioned games. Other highlights include a Light Horse display, trackless train rides, a lolly hunt and musical entertainment from a capella singers Miranda’s Picnic. Arts and crafts activities include wool spinning and woodwork. Quality market stalls offering home-made jams, cakes, plants and specialty foods including wood-fired pizza will ensure there is something for the whole family to enjoy. The Carlsruhe Country Fair is an event run by Woodend Primary School to showcase its historic rural campus and raise funds for the school. This beautifully treed halfhectare property about 8km north of Woodend includes the original red brick classroom, mud brick poultry pen, large fenced vegetable garden, a small orchard, a playing oval and two paddocks for the farm animals. Don’t miss this chance to soak up the country atmosphere in a beautiful rural setting. Stallholders interested in having a stall at the market please contact the school on 5427 2455. Majestic Flint Hill

On Saturday 14 November & Sunday 15 November Flint Hill, a majestic and historical garden at 65 Romsey Road, Woodend is opening as part of Open Gardens Victoria’s first season. Open Gardens Victoria opens inspirational gardens to the public, and Sir Roderick Carnegie’s beloved Flint Hill certainly fits into this category. Flint Hill dates back to 1922, when the process of carving a garden out of a partly timbered block began. The garden and house were originally sheltered from the north by a peppermint wood. A few of these large peppermints still survive. The grand vision for the romantic garden visitors will find today began in the 1930s. Now, magnificent oaks, maples, beeches and conifers form a canopy over sweeping lawns bordered by hundreds of majestic rhododendrons. Three of the trees are listed on the National Register – so as visitors walk through the gardens they should look out for the Bishop Pine, the Lucombe Oak and the Caucasian Fir. Pathways wind through woodlands, criss-crossing each other as they lead to a series of enchanting ponds and a lake. The garden is surrounded by impressive eucalypt parkland with views to Mount Macedon and Hanging Rock. It has not always been plain sailing for this garden though. When Sir Roderick and the late Lady Carnegie bought Flint Hill in 1980, the garden had been sadly neglected and was overrun with blackberries. The ponds were dry and overgrown and there were many dead trees in the garden. So they set about hauling out the rubbish and making bonfires. The garden responded. Even so, the garden is not without challenges. Lack of light, large tree roots, sulphur-crested cockatoos and parrots all take their toll. And the weather can be fierce. Frosts are common and the water pipes have been known to stay frozen until after lunch! Occasionally it snows. Today, Flint Hill’s Head Gardener Merran McRoberts maintains a picture-perfect woodland garden complete with manicured lawns, sculptural hedges and an orchard. A recently added post and rail fence adds to the atmosphere.

With Lisa Stafford’s guidance, a number of new beds have recently been created. There is a herbaceous area near the house as well as a vegetable plot and hydrangeas for summer colour. This is one of the great gardens of Australia and is not to be missed. It will be open from 10.00am to 4.30 pm on both Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November. Entry is $10 (children U18 free) and students $5. There will be talks on the garden each day, along with quiet music and refreshments. Visitors can combine their trip with the Macedon Food and Wine Festival for a full day of activities! Submitted by Liz Fazio

Gorillas are on the brink of extinction. They’re calling on YOU to donate your phone today! You can now help save Gorillas in Africa simply by donating your mobile phone! Coltan is a metallic ore that is mined both in and out of Africa and can be found within many electronic devices such as mobile phones. The mining of coltan within the Congo River Basin is contributing to forest loss and unrest in the region, and is accelerating the loss of mountain gorillas at an alarmingly fast rate. Whilst efforts are being made to tackle this issue, the majority of the worlds known coltan reserves are found within Africa, and the mining of coltan within gorilla habitat continues. It is very difficult to know which phones contain coltan mined from Africa, however every phone can help save gorillas when donated to They’re Calling on You. By donating your phone through the They’re Calling on You mobile phone recycling program you are: • Keeping its coltan and other valuable or toxic parts out of Australian landfill • Helping the National Zoo & Aquarium raise money to support primate conservation, and other wildlife conservation projects • Lessening the demand for coltan mining by providing the coltan-coated capacitor in your old mobile phone a second life. Thank you Thank you to all those who have donated their old phones to be recycled instead of throwing them away. At the end of September we sent off 111 phones to be recycled. This resulted in a donation of $116.52 to Zoos Victoria to support primate conservation. Recycle now! Please recycle your pre-loved mobile phones, smart phone and tablets of all ages and in any condition Drop off points are located at Collier Office & Business Assist, Shop 5, 130 High Street or Woodend Primary School, High Street Woodend.

Call for Mental Health Volunteers

PS My Family Matters is looking for local people to join its volunteer group, offering peer support to those who are caring for a loved one with a mental illness. ‘Since we formed PSMFM 18 months ago we have seen an increasing demand for peer support services’ said Tamara Wilson, president of PSMFM. ‘Our feedback consistently indicates that carers value the one on one interaction with someone who understands what they are going through and can offer support and advice.’ PSMFM is looking for people who live in (or near) the Macedon Ranges, and have lived experience of mental illness, either as a patient or as a carer. Access to a car would be helpful. ‘We are in the processing of finalizing both our governance and training programs’ said Tamara. ‘Volunteers will receive comprehensive training in mental health first aid and will be supported through our governance and oversight policies. This is a chance to join a team who are truly making a difference to the lives of many in our community. If you can spare a few hours a week, we would love to hear form you,’ For further information and to register interest please call 0475 269 965. Cooma Uniting Church Male Choir

This highly regarded Choir will be singing in the Kyneton Uniting Church on Sunday 18th October at 2:30pm. Come and enjoy a pleasant Sunday afternoon with the Cooma Uniting Church Male choir followed by afternoon tea. Admission is a donation to the Refugee Council of Australia. About the choir The choir was formed as a quartet to sing at the opening of the Cooma (Victoria) Methodist Church in 1926. With the exception of the Second World War the choir has provided music each year at the church anniversary. The men practise in August and September and accept up to ten invitations to perform at district venues. These days members come from all denominations with only one currently from Cooma. The music that the choir presents is sacred and while simple in style, appeals to Christians and nonChristians alike. The men enjoy coming together to share God’s love and message through song. During its 89 years, there have been four conductors. The first conductor Alf Poole was succeeded by his nephew Lindsay Clapp. He was in turn succeeded by his nephew Stewart Anderson and the current conductor is Stewart’s son Peter. There have been nine organists and the current organist Geoff Anderson is pipe organ trained and is very much at home on instruments such as Melbourne and Sydney town hall organs. He looks forward to presenting several solo items on the Kyneton instrument.

Council lifts restrictions on burning off for small properties Following the recent fires in Lancefield, Cobaw and Benloch, Macedon Ranges Shire Council in consultation with local CFA brigades has approved the lifting of burning off restrictions again for the remainder of October for land less than 4,000 square metres. Residents must ensure that when burning off they do not create a nuisance for their neighbours and should continue to monitor any burn-off for at least seven days to ensure it is fully extinguished. Large loads of green waste (excluding noxious weeds) can also be taken and tipped for free at Council’s transfer stations. Roll Up, Roll Up: The Wellness Expo Is In Town

Do you walk a tightrope balancing wellbeing in your life? Could you do with professional support to juggle disease and good health? Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s time to introduce you to complementary therapies. The Macedon Wellness group is inviting the community to come along to its annual expo in Woodend on Saturday 7 November. You can step inside to meet local practitioners and discover who and what’s available across the Macedon Ranges to support you and your family to be well. If you’ve ever been curious about things like homeopathy, tai chi or Feldenkrais then roll up to the expo, where you can find it all under one roof. There is a diverse range of treatments that come under the banner complementary therapy–. Each modality has its own theories and practice. But one thing they have in common is the aim to treat the whole person, not just symptoms. This goal links local health and wellness practitioners from the Macedon Wellness group. It’s a not-for-profit network that connects practitioners, and showcases and promotes wellbeing in the community. Committee member Sue Whittaker is excited about this year’s expo, which is the third event the group has coordinated. This year it is supported by a grant from the Macedon Ranges Shire Council. Statistically the Macedon Ranges has some health challenges - with obesity, mental health, exercise, smoking and work life balance issues. “Complementary therapies and preventative health can help to improve the wellbeing and longevity of individuals and our community,” Sue said. The expo is a fun way to find out more about the nature and benefits of therapies offered in the region. The day-long event will include mini treatments, stallholders, demonstration activities and guest speakers. You can stock up on healthy food supplies at the Woodend farmers’ market then drop into the expo next door for a healthy supply of information for your body and mind. Submitted by M. Wilson

Planting Futures

Zoe Bruton initially chose to study horticulture because her mum liked plants. The Year 10 student from Sacred Heart College has been surprised to become so interested, and to discover that there’s more to it than just putting something into the ground. She and her classmates have been learning about a range of horticultural crops, soil preparation, and irrigation requirements. They’ve also developed skills to identify and manage pests, weeds and diseases. This week they put their knowledge to good use at Kyneton District Health.

SHC students & teacher, Jim Sinatra with Karen and Howard (KDH

The students visited KDH to plant the school’s donation to the hospital gardens project. It was a good chance to get hands-on experience in a real-life project, which is a valuable part of the practical VET curriculum. Teacher Vin Lakey explained that students also respond well when an industry professional other than their regular teacher gets involved. On hand at KDH was Trentham local Jim Sinatra, an emeritus professor and leader in landscape architecture education and design. Mr Sinatra has been one of the key contributors to the hospital gardens design and installation. The community has embraced this project, donating well beyond the initial target of 90 trees. KDH Director of Nursing, Quality and Community Engagement, Karen Laing, welcomed the active way Sacred Heart chose to participate. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for our hospital and school to work together to build connections. We love the way Sacred Heart has directly linked its donation to student programs and subject activities,” Karen said. The organisations are looking at ways in which they can continue to grow collaborative programs into the future. Submitted by D Lawrence

Corelli, Britten and Brahms at the Cope Williams Estate:

Resonance String Orchestra and the Castlemaine Chamber Players present an afternoon of fine music Resonance String Orchestra's Senior Strings and staff will combine forces with the Castlemaine Chamber Players to present a very special Summer Recital in the Cope Williams Estate's fine Art Gallery on December 5th. Resonance String Orchestra has had a thrilling 2015, including a dynamic workshop and performance with the Australian Chamber Orchestra's ACO Collective, followed by Heartstrings, a collaborative concert with soprano Elisabeth Denk. Heartstrings saw audience members treated to a lush array of romantic and romantic-inspired works (including a unique rendition of Bizet’s Habanera featuring stilts, origami roses and choreography!). In 2016, Resonance is set to explore new territory with an exciting collaborative project with the captivating Travel Art Dance Company. Resonance has enjoyed an injection of new blood this year with a number of accomplished adult amateur players joining the ranks of the Senior Strings ensemble. We have also recently welcomed a new cohort of talented young students into the main orchestra. Resonance is still accepting members into both ensembles, so if you play a string instrument and would like to play with others in a friendly and musically challenging environment, contact the Directors of Music. The Summer Recital, the orchestra's final performance engagement for the year, will feature works by Britten and Corelli, featuring a number of soloists from the Senior Strings Ensemble. The Castlemaine Chamber Players will be presenting Brahms' sextet in B flat major, one of the masterpieces of the Romantic Chamber Music repertoire. This is a great opportunity to hear this stunning work live, and to hear two of the central Victoria's esteemed string ensembles. Join us at 3 pm, Saturday December 5 at Cope Williams Estate, 160 Glenfern Road Romsey. Tickets are $20/ $15 book via trybooking: http://www.trybooking.com/JJVE Queries: music.director@resonancestringorchestra.org.au. Submitted by Cherie Eddy for Resonance String Orchestra

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new way of providing disability services which will affect many people with disabilities, their families and carers in our rural community. People with disabilities will be able to access services under the scheme from May 2017 and will require information and education about the changes as well as information about what they need to do to access services under the NDIS that will support their individual goals. Windarring together with Cobaw Community Health understand the importance of sharing their knowledge about the implementation of the NDIS for people with disabilities, their families and carers and are conducting a series of community information sessions in the region to ensure that people are empowered to make decisions about disability services. We also want these sessions to be a chance for families and carers to tell us about how they would like to see services provided locally. Guests and presenters will include representatives from Early Childhood Intervention Australia, the National Disability Insurance Agency, Cobaw Community Health, Macedon Ranges Shire Council and Windarring who will all be available for round table discussions and feedback. The first two information sessions will be held in November and all are encouraged to attend. • Woodend: Wednesday November 25, 9am-12pm at Woodend Neighbourhood House • Kyneton: Thursday November 26, 6pm-9pm at Kyneton Mechanics Institute For further information about the NDIS or Community Information Sessions please contact Chris O’Connor, CEO, Windarring on 5422 1666. Cub Scouts get air!

1st Woodend Burke Cub Scout pack experienced some very exciting times over the past few weeks in and around Woodend and beyond. Our community and the outdoors were a strong focus for our activities. We headed off to Noonameena Scout Camp to participate in Jamboree of the Air; this was an awesome activity where we had the opportunity to talk to other Cub Scouts from around the world as well as Australia. Also on this day Cubs made a homopolar motor which is a direct current electric motor with two magnetic poles that makes a wire twist and move around a battery. Every child was supported in their learning as an individual to achieve at their level of understanding.

Flying High In November we will be flying high at the Kyneton Aerodrome with an activity day run by the Scouts Victoria Air Activities Unit. Every Cub Scout in attendance will be offered a flight in a light aircraft on the day. Currently we have some vacancies for girls and boys 7 ½ upwards, and if you wish to share in the fun and adventure with your child, we have a leader vacancy as well. I encourage you to give me a call as you are most welcome to attend for the remainder of 2015 or register your interest for 2016. Please give me a call (0419 001 493) or we sincerely invite you to our Try Scouting afternoon on Sunday 13th December 2-6pm at our Scout Hall in Forest Street. Door opens on true tales

An unusual door opened in Woodend recently, allowing some fortunate people, including me, to experience alternative lives. Story Door - Woodend’s first free, live, true and personal story-telling evening - happened at Holgates Brewhouse on 2 October. With an open microphone, anyone could tell a fiveminute tale, involving ‘no notes, no reciting, just raw human adventure’. The organiser, Kate Lawrence, asked me to attend and write this article. I went nervously, anticipating that this atypical amateur performance might be… awkward. I was wrong. With two-dozen others in the audience, I was thoroughly entertained and enlightened, glad that my Friday night routine of snoozing on the sofa under my iPad had been disrupted. There were ten storytellers, locals and Melburnians, novices and old hands. In styles as individual as fingerprints, they shared funny, sad and strange experiences, all true. The theme was ‘Firsts’. We heard a nurse’s moving story about organ donation. We shared a city dweller’s eye-opening adventure in drought-stricken countryside. We moved house, learned to ride, kissed another woman, studied philosophy, went busking, almost lost our virginity and irrevocably lost a friend. At Story Door, I discovered the seductive power of oral storytelling. Actually, it was a rediscovery - as a child, I begged my parents to tell me tales. Stories are how we share wisdom, so others might benefit from our experience. They’re also intensely good fun. Step through the next Story Door from 7.30pm on 6 November in the Leadlight Room at Holgates. Theme: ‘Race against Time’. Cost: nothing. Walking together

Out of the Shadows The Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group (MRSPAG) would like to thank the community for their generous support of Lifeline’s Out of the Shadows and Into the Light Walk. on September 13. Woodend put on its best show of sunshine and warmth as about 270 people come together to walk in remembrance of those lost by suicide and to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention.

People gathering at Woodend Children’s Park were able to take a remembrance stone and have their loved one’s name read out in an opening address before walking together around Woodend’s beautiful Five Mile Creek. Afterwards, Innisfree put on a delicious spread for breakfast, including bacon and egg rolls and fruit salad. Welcoming the walkers, MRSPAG member, Lynsey Ward, said having open and honest conversations about suicide and mental illness helps to remove stigma and better understand how to assist people at risk of suicide. “The experiences that bind and unite us are beyond heartbreaking, but from this we have a perspective that is critically important to any conversations about how we can better respond as a community and work together to prevent suicide,” Lynsey said. MRSPAG is a group of passionate people working towards a goal of zero suicides in the Macedon Ranges including local community members, representatives from mental health services, Victoria Police, support agencies and Council. MRSPAG would like to thank the individuals, companies and organisations that supported the event. Without their assistance and generosity, the walk would not have been possible. A big thanks to all involved For more information about MRSPAG and its plan of action for suicide prevention please contact Kerry Haby on 5422 0333 or email khaby@mrsc.vic.gov.au. If you feel you are at risk, or if you are worried about someone you know - please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 for immediate help.

News & events

Club of Woodend

Once again Rotary had a busy month in October which included supporting the recent Macedon Ranges Shire Council (MRSC) Live 4 Life celebration event held at Braemar College.

Lydia Akers was the winner of the Individual Award and the $300 prize money, generously sponsored by Woodend Rotary. Rotary Youth director Jenny Zimmerman and Club Service director Charlie Bender represented the club and had a great time at the event. Lydia wrote this inspirational message to accompany her entry. “In my opinion Speak Up Speak Out means to

share or talk about your feelings, emotions or mental health problems to a counsellor, trusted adult or parent.” Members also visited the Woodend Heritage Society and finished the month with a visit from the District Governor Julie Mason. We continued our weekly walking group activities which included walks in Woodend, Macedon and an 18km walk on the Trentham Rail Trail. Local Jazz Duo a must-see

An enjoyable night at Brahms and Liszt recently saw Kind of Blue Jazz Duo perform in this intimate venue. It really is a very smooth way to spend an evening with friends!

Come up and explore the Macedon Regional Park, take in the view from the Camel’s Hump, go for a refreshing walk on more than 30km of walking trails and finish up with a nice lunch or afternoon tea. ...and we are only a 10 minute drive from Woodend!

Food made with love They like to give their audience an insight into some of the most famous jazz songs that we all know and love so you’ll often hear a little bit of history in between the numbers. A long repertoire list means you’re bound to have heard the songs before … it’s impossible not to sing along! In November they’ll be delighting the diners at Charlie’s Restaurant in Gisborne on both the 7th and 28th. You can find details of their next gig on Facebook … just type Kind of Blue Jazz Duo in the search field … that’s the quickest way to find them!

Life sentences:

a communicator’s story Growing up in northern NSW, Rebecca (Bec) Colless loved to read. ‘I read in the bath, as I brushed my teeth, and while playing scales on the piano,’ says Bec. ‘I even experimented with reading on my bike, but that ended badly.’ ‘To avoid unemployment, I studied science and became expert at mashing fruit flies to extract their DNA. Then, to avoid employment by strange men in smelly laboratories, I acquired some postgraduate qualifications in communication, writing and journalism.’ For five years, Bec and her husband ran their own travelling science show, visiting schools around Australia. ‘We brought joy to thousands of teachers, who nicked off to their staffrooms for coffee while we minded their students.’ Bec has managed education programs, marketing and communications for science centres and museums, a university, the CSIRO, Western Water, and RedBeard Bakery in Trentham. Meanwhile, she had two daughters and moved to Woodend in 2005. When her younger daughter started school, Bec studied fiction writing for children at RMIT. Some of her short stories have been published and she has won several national competitions for her unpublished manuscripts for picture books and novels for children and young adults. Since 2011, Bec has freelanced as a marketing and communications consultant, working with local businesses and government agencies in tourism, wellbeing, hospitality and sustainability. ‘I enjoy the variety,’ she says, ‘and I like operating in the regional economy. I can charge less than city consultants and see the results in my local area.’ Find Bec at www.rebeccacolless.com.

from the Mayor On this journey that we are taking thought you may be interested in understanding the role our Red Cross plays has with asylum seekers and refugees. Firstly the Red Cross is built on seven fundamental principles- Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality. These principles come to the fore when the Red Cross is working to assist people impacted by migration and seeking asylum, irrespective of the legal status, whose survival, dignity or mental health is under threat. The Red Cross focuses on restoring family links for people separated by war, conflict, disaster or migration. The well being of people waiting on outcome of their Visa application. Making sure that the dignity, health and well being of people in immigration detention is protected. To help in building capacities, skills, support and service access for refugee and asylum seeker communities to re-establish their lives.

Konichi-wa, I have been in Japan, along with other councillors and council staff, representing Macedon Ranges Shire at the opening of a cultural centre in Tokai City, Japan, with whom we signed a sister city agreement 12 months ago. We were joined by their other 3 sister cities from Japan and Turkey. We also planted a Bottlebrush at the University of Tokai, to commemorate our friendship. The two areas have many differences, but the friendship and hospitality of the people of Tokai is similar to that of the Macedon Ranges. Whilst there I was saddened to hear about the bushfires, and I thank everyone who kept me up to date, and worked hard to assist in fighting the fire and now, in the recovery period. Such a large and intense fire was earlier in the season than expected, and reminds us of the need to be prepared at all times. Please contact council staff if you need assistance following on from this fire, or in making future fire-ready plans. My thoughts are with everyone impacted by these recent fires. Lastly, I would like to thank everyone for their support during my time as Mayor. A new Mayor will be elected in November. Arigato, Jennifer

Term four has started and we have a wide range of courses and activities happening again. I just thought that I would highlight some of the new things happening at the House and some late arrivals that missed out on our brochure. Anjee Anderson has brought her Shiatsu Massage practice to our little House on Wednesday mornings. For a very reasonable rate you can gain relaxation and pain relief from either a half hour or full hour massage. Shiatsu is a discipline that uses Chinese Medicine theories and practices to access energy points to effect relaxation. We have Dora delivering her very popular workshop, Make your Own Skin Care products. Using natural ingredients you will leave your half day workshop with a lip balm, a moisturiser and a scrub and the knowledge to do it all again. Perfect for a homemade Christmas gift, the workshop is on 28 November from 10am to 12.30pm, and at $50 including all materials; it’s a great deal. Pamm Brittain will be leading a short series for women to explore their ‘inner knowing’ i.e. expanding one’s consciousness by discovering or rediscovering one’s own innate qualities to create positive lifestyle choices. If you are at a crossroads in your life then this 6-week course could be

the catalyst for change. Starting 28 October and running through to early December it will set you up for a great new year. Also new for this term is Creative Daze Drama, with Saskia bringing back her delightful drama classes for primary school aged children. Help bring your child’s imagination alive and send them along on a Monday afternoon 4-5.15pm. Book in now for all of these courses through the House. A heartfelt thank you goes out to a few people as we are drawing closer to the end of the year. Firstly to the Braemar students who came along on a Friday afternoon and were the technology trouble-shooters for a range of very grateful people. We do hope to see some of you back next year. Secondly our community lunch volunteers who are preparing to deliver their last community lunch for this year. There have been a few people who have helped out throughout the year including Susan, Diane, Carmen, Vicky, Lorraine and Lorraine (yes, we were overflowing with Lorraines). Come and give them your personal thanks on Friday 20th November at the last Community Lunch for the year (we will see you back in 2016). Submitted by Jill Scanlon - Coordinator

Hesket goes National!

In time for summer Bradley’s welcome the latest innovation from Verosol - CrystalScreen.

The Skipping Nationals During the school holidays, four of our lucky Hesket Skippers participated in the Skipping Nationals at Canberra. The three day event, starting on the 19th of September, was the first day of the much anticipated competition for Imogen Hoyle-Service, Maddison DuttonJohnson, Sam Williams and Zantha Snell. Each child completed an individual speed trial, a group speed relay, a group double-dutch speed relay and a team freestyle. Maddison, Sam and Zantha each performed an individual freestyle and both Maddison and Imogen choreographed a paired freestyle. The competition was fierce, as our students are up against other skippers who were already experienced with the National event, however all of our skippers did us proud and wowed the judges and officials repeatedly. From keeping their cool when their ropes broke, to the never before seen move of quickly picking up their team mates rope and skipping on, to the special mention about a rather impressive individual freestyle for being a first timer, these Hesket skippers continued to impress all of those around them. Sam Williams received a silver medal for his individual speed and a bronze medal for his overall points, qualifying him for a spot in representing Australia in the World Championships next year in Sweden.

November 2015 White Ribbon Campaign

At Brooke Street Medical Centre we support the White Ribbon Campaign. This is a male led campaign to stop violence against women. Shockingly, one woman is killed in Australia every week by an intimate partner. And in the 1544 age group, intimate partner violence is the main contributor to death, disability and poor health in Australian women. The White Ribbon campaign says hope lies in developing equality and respect between men and women. Many men are involved in White Ribbon programs across Australia to improve attitudes towards and actions against women. White Ribbon Day is 25 November. MASH solar a “sure winner” says Mayor of Macedon Ranges

Community solar bulk-buy, MASH2, gets the thumbs up from Jennifer Anderson, Mayor of Macedon Ranges. “MASH2 is a sure winner for residents of Macedon Ranges providing savings on energy bills, returns to the community, and a reduction in greenhouse emissions”, says Cr Anderson. “Given its success in neighbouring Mount Alexander Shire, I encourage residents to participate.” MASH2 is launching in Macedon Ranges Shire on Wednesday 21 October at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute. Two community info meetings will be held giving residents a chance to find out about this solar bulk-buy project which started in Mt Alexander Shire in 2015. So far, over 300 homes in the region have installed solar PV rooftops with MASH in just over 12 months saving over 1500 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year and $200,000 off electricity bills annually. MASH2 is organised by the Hub Foundation Castlemaine, a not-for-profit organisation. “We set up MASH to help people reduce their CO2 emissions by making high quality solar rooftops more affordable. Currently 18% of homes in Macedon Ranges have solar PV rooftops. We’re hoping we can help boost this to close to 20% in the next 6 months”, said Jo Kaptein, Project Officer at the Hub Foundation. A community bonus of a free 2Kw solar PV system will be installed on a community building in Kyneton once 50

installations in the region have been completed. The community info meetings are at 5.00-6.30pm and 7.00-8.30pm on Wednesday 21 October at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute, 81 Mollison St, Kyneton VIC 3444. Attendance is free. Register at mash.org.au or by calling 0455 589 065.

Thank you from Bike Safe

The weather is finally starting to turn and its an open invitation to get out onto on your bike. Over the past few weeks we have had some perfect conditions for cycling. Despite the sunny skies - cyclists still feel nervous when approaching blind and narrow parts of the road. Sometimes its difficult to be aware of vehicles behind you. Wind can play havoc on a cyclist’s hearing and the eyes on the back of helmets are only to deter Magpies ( and they don’t work for that either). Last week I encountered just such a situation. The driver of the Mawson’s Concrete and Garden Supply Truck however slowed down - and waited the few seconds until there was clear vision around the corner. Its just one example of recent courtesy’s we’ve seen paid - but do you know how much we appreciate it? It certainly made my day. I was keenly looking for the first opportunity to let this driver safely pass. So we from Bike Safe Macedon want to say thank you to every driver who pays us this consideration and helps to keep us safe. A thousand times - Thank you. Submitted by Amanda Calvert

New Arthritis Support Group for Macedon Ranges Are you, or is someone you know, living with arthritis or a muscle, bone or joint condition such as osteoporosis or fibromyalgia? Arthritis affects nearly one in every five Australians. Often seen as a normal part of ageing, two of every three people with arthritis are aged between 15 and 60 years. While there is no cure for arthritis, there is help locally in the newly formed Macedon Ranges Arthritis Peer Support Group. The Macedon Ranges group meets from 1.303.30pm on the first Monday of the month at Woodend Neighbourhood House, 47 Forest Street in Woodend. Peer support groups provide social connections with people who understand a little of what you are going through, the opportunity to develop long lasting friendships and importantly, the chance to have a laugh. You can also tap into local knowledge about services and health providers available. Concerts to exceed 100,000 patrons

The 100,000th patron to concerts at Hanging Rock will make their way through the gates at the Cold Chisel concert in November. Cold Chisel will be the first Australian act to headline Hanging Rock after successful concerts by international stars Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart and The Eagles. Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Deputy Mayor, Russell Mowatt said that the concerts at Hanging Rock have enjoyed wide spread support since their introduction in 2010. “Council’s partnership with Frontier Touring has provided Hanging Rock with much needed revenue and importantly promotion, which has no doubt contributed to over a 10 per cent increase in general visits each of the last three years,” he said. The economic benefit to the region of each concert was assessed at approximately $4.3 million, meaning that over $25 million has been added to the regional economy since 2010. “Not only does the Macedon Ranges and surrounding areas benefit but so does the state as many concert goers come from interstate”, he said. Limited tickets are still available for the Cold Chisel concert on Saturday 21 November. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.hangingrockconcerts.com. In addition to the concert, works to support events and general picnicking at the Rock are continuing, with new barbecues and improved toilet facilities that include a new accessible toilet and a family-friendly toilet with baby change facilities recently completed. Other works include the provision of power and water into the East Paddock and two new picnic shelters and toilets. The works have been funded by the Victorian and Australian governments and Macedon Ranges Shire Council. Submitted by E. McCormick for M.R.S.C.

This November the Macedon Ranges is set to go off. Seriously, you don’t have to go anywhere else because there is something on every week. Let’s start with a small list of big fun. You can go to the Kyneton Cup for first-class racing and a party to match –it is the day after Melbourne Cup. Over the weekend 14 + 15 November plan for the Macedon Ranges Wine and Food Festival and the Malmsbury Village Fayre to get your fill of the delicious offerings from local producers and take a trip to the Hanging Rock Craft Market for more handmade treats on the Sunday. The next weekend, you can head to the Kyneton Show for true country hospitality and entertainment. There’s more. Cold Chisel come to the Rock in the same weekend in what will probably be the biggest party in the region of all time. In the last weekend you can head to the Riddells Creek Street Festival or the Carlsruhe Country Fair. This is just a short list of the region’s offerings for November. Head to our Macedon Ranges Naturally Cool Facebook page to tell us what you are up to in the Macedon Ranges over November. Post your pictures that show you celebrating in the Macedon Ranges. Fun weekend for cancer cause

Teams are getting into fundraising mode for the Lancefield/ Macedon Ranges Relay For Life, now in its 14th year and only a few months away.

Bless the animals

There was no donkey, or cocks crowing, but at the blessing of the animals at St Mary’s Church, Sunday 4 October, there were hooves and barking aplenty. On a sunny spring morning the blessings of the natural world were felt in the spiritual world as the Woodend Anglican congregation celebrated the feast of St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment. The unusual service had hounds howling hymns, a pony processing up the aisle and the day’s readings featured rabbits and emus.

L) Whelan with owner Trudy Shaphard. R)Emrys (aged one and a half years) walks Bob into church.

Mother Heather Vander Reest presided with a calm not shared by the Chihuahuas or excited toddlers present, giving blessings to pets and their owners. Parishioners shared stories of their four-legged companions, including Whelan the tailless terrier-cross, rescued by a local animal shelter, and Bob the pony, a survivor of the Kinglake bushfire. Bob made himself useful mowing the church lawn before and after the service (and managed to refrain from eating the flowers during it). Whilst the service may have lacked Father Ian Howarth in a Scooby Doo costume (to which sight those at Kyneton farmers market were treated) it was nonetheless a service to linger long in the memory. St Mary’s Anglican Church Woodend welcomes all (of two legs or four) to their Sunday services at 10.30am Submitted by Matthew Gisborne

Local organisers are hoping the number of teams climbs as high as 30 for the 2016 Cancer Council Victoria major fundraiser, which has raised more than 1.23 million since 2003. The committee is again injecting new activities and entertainment into the event program to make the weekend a fun and rewarding experience for all ages. An incentive for all teams registering by November 22 is the opportunity to win the use of a marquee at the Relay, donated by Macedon Ranges Party Hire. The winning team members will be able to save their energy for the track and make a smooth exit after the event as the company’s crew takes charge of assembly and pack up. An important date for all teams to note is Tuesday, November 24. Captains or team representatives will be given information about the Relay weekend at a meeting starting 7pm in the Supper Room at the Lancefield Mechanics Institute. The 2016 Lancefield/Macedon Ranges Relay For Life is on March 4 & 5 at Lancefield Park. For more details contact Kathy on 0419 644 688 or: jakalake57@gmail.com. Submitte by Nadine Hartnett

Australian Decorative & Fine Arts Society (ADFAS)

A full house heard Irish lecturer, Dr Caroline Brooke, speaking on Art and Patronage in Renaissance Florence at Kyneton Town Hall last Thursday 15 October. This last lecture for 2015 was very well received by ADFAS members and guests. Dr Brooke brings vast specialist knowledge and passion to her subject. She said that Renaissance Florence art patrons such as her subject, banker Cosimo de Medici, were motivated, among other reasons, by civic pride. She added that on her first visit to Australia she has been struck by the degree of civic pride she has seen here. After the lecture, Chair Maureen Hoerner unveiled the 2016 program, which will see UK television’s Antique Road Show presenter, Lars Tharp, return to Australia for the opening lecture on Thursday 3 March.

Local businesses Choosing Tap

Woodend businesses are keeping hydrated while helping the environment with Western Water’s Choose Tap program. Western Water has given away more than 3,500 free reusable water bottles to encourage the community to choose tap water over bottled. So far more than 100 businesses across the region have signed up for the program, including medical centres, mechanics, schools, real estate agents and plumbers. Any Woodend businesses who would like free water bottles for staff can sign up for the program by visiting the Western Water website at www.westernwater.com.au. Numbers are limited, but those who miss out can sign up for the next round of the program in early 2016. One of the biggest benefits to choosing tap water over bottled is cost, with the price of a bottle of water at the supermarket costing around the same as filling a reusable water bottle from the tap every day for two years. PET plastic water bottles are also a huge source of waste, taking up to 1000 years to break down in landfill. Tap water is a great way to avoid unhealthy sugary drinks, and stay hydrated for better health and work performance. Submitted by k. Smith for Western Water

Richard and Caroline Brooke from UK with Maureen Hoerner, Dee Briscomb and Gordon Whyte after the lecture.

Membership of ADFAS is open to everyone with an interest in the arts. By joining now, you can enjoy the year’s final activities – excursions to Ballarat Art Gallery for the Archibalds and to the Hermitage exhibition at the NGV – and the end of year sunset party at historic St Agnes homestead, Kyneton, before looking forward to the 2016 program of six international and two Australian lectures at Kyneton Town Hall, as well as a mix of excursions and luncheon talks throughout the year. 2016 programs and membership applications are available now at Woodend Information Centre or ring Norma on 5427 4918.

Encourage Church hosts Chillax Youth Group, meetings held fortnightly on Saturdays Youth groups have been part of the fabric of many communities for decades. Yet a surprisingly large number of people have never been exposed to them. It’s no surprise, therefore, that these people are unaware of the many benefits a youth group could have on their children. One of the most frequent ways that communities have attempted to combat a rising feeling of listlessness and isolation amongst teens has been through youth groups. This is not surprising, given the excellent track record that such groups have. Youth groups can literally be life-savers for some children who crave a sense of family, friendship or simply an opportunity to use their creativity and energy constructively. Youth groups can be great places for kids to get back on their feet, with renewed confidence and a real sense of wellbeing. Not only this, but they may well also find that they are able to make new friends and to become part of a new social group. Also responsibility can be given to children in youth groups, which teaches them the skill of leadership; again, this can be put to use in any number of contexts later in life. It’s certainly true that children can gain many benefits from attending youth groups! Chillax Youth Group meets fortnightly during school terms with lots of different events and excursions! For more information regarding our youth group, please contact the church office via Encourage Church, 7 Mitchell Court, Romsey, ask@encouragechurch.com.au or 5429 6327. A welcome reopening for Gilbert Gordon Oval, Woodend

The pitch is rolled, the cricketers whites are out and training has begun at Gilbert Gordon Oval this season following the completion of works to rejuvenate the site. The $800,000 project ($662,000 Victorian Government and $142,000 Macedon Ranges Shire Council) to completely reconstruct the oval saw the cricket pitch, goal posts, coach’s boxes, sub-surface drainage and turf surface overhauled. Council’s Director Assets and Operations, Dale Thornton welcomes the reopening of the popular sportsground. “The revitalisation of Gilbert Gordon Oval has been a long time coming–and now user groups like the local cricket club can get out there and enjoy it once again. “Both the cricket and football clubs are looking forward to having a sports ground that can be used all year round, and we’d like to thank all the oval user groups and the community for their patience during its rejuvenation,” he said. What a beauty of a business!

Ramai Skin & Body Care is an enticingly peaceful and restorative place for busy people including weary parents with children in tow. Owner Samantha Moore, who has worked in the beauty industry for 10 years, opened Ramai in 2012. Her success stems largely from listening to clients, shaping the business to fit in with their lives, and rewarding customer loyalty. The salon is situated opposite the Woodend railway station but set deeply back from the road for maximum privacy. One of its distinguishing features is a child-friendly zone. It is stocked with books and things typically found in waiting rooms to amuse little visitors, but there is also a fish tank and movies to help pass the time. Another key factor contributing to the business success story is the opening hours. It operates until 9pm five nights a week. The exclusive use of organic skin products is further reason that people choose to come for waxing, manicures, pedicures, facials, massages and body treatments. Sam also promises that a 60-minute facial means a person will indeed receive the therapist’s attention for the full hour. Many clients need flexibility with appointments and, if nursing a toddler on one’s lap while having a manicure is the only way a mum can get her nails groomed, that’s how the treatment is done. Ramai again triumphed at this year’s Macedon Ranges Business Excellence Awards, winning Trainee of the Year

page 38

and finishing in the top three for the strongly contested categories of Excellence in Wellbeing, Excellence in Retail, and Young Business Person of the Year. Sam is thrilled that trainee Tiffany Podboy’s commitment to developing and extending her skills was recognised. She also acknowledges the support of clients, who continue to provide useful feedback and promote growth by recommending the business. “We offer so much more than beauty treatments, we provide a total beauty experience.” Visit www.ramai.com.au for information about the range of Ramai services and testimonials from customers. If you wish to discuss a treatment or make a booking ring 0438 062 143. Written by Nadine Hartnet

The Gisborne Singers collaborate

With the Ballarat choral society to present the armed man -a mass for peace- in Woodend and Ballarat The Gisborne Singers and the Ballarat Choral Society combine to make an 80 plus person choir, supported by full orchestra with Helen Duggan as soprano soloist. Choir and orchestra are conducted by Stephen Brockman. These two choirs were last together for Mendelssohn’s Elija and the power and resonance of the two choirs together is quite wonderful, as was indicated in a major combined rehearsal recently in Ballan. The Armed man was commissioned by the Royal Armouries in Britain in 2000 to mark the transition from one millennium to another. It reflects the passing of the most war-torn century in human history. This is a stunning work by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins who charts the growing menace of a descent into war with a hope for peace. I t is an exciting work both to sing and hear in concert with soaring melodies that are quite breathtaking. The work is presented in recognition of the Gallipoli landings in 1915. All of the innocent victims of war are commemorated in its text, regardless of race or creed. Performances will be at St Patrick’s College Chapel, Sturt St, Ballarat –3pm on Sunday 15th November. Bookings: Her Majesty’s Theatre box office 5333 5888 or www.hermaj.com. Also in Woodend at St Ambrose Parish Hall, Cnr Anslow and Templeton Sts, Woodend at 3pm on Sunday 22nd November. Start Run Group Achieves 5km

Macedon Ranges Running Club members achieved their goals at all levels in October. Congratulations to all our Woodend Start Running Group members who, after 8 weeks of training, completed their non-stop 5km run on 25 October at Gisborne. The milestone event saw a fantastic effort by our runners, who were well supported by friends, family and other club members who came along to make the day a success. Besides the milestone 5km event, the AGM was held, with the outgoing committee receiving rapturous applause for their work over the year for keeping the club socially vibrant, organising events and encouraging community participation. The new committee was proposed, seconded and installed for the ensuing year. On the back of their 5km run success, the Start Running Group members have now begun training for their nonstop 10km run on Sunday 29 November. The event celebrates the completion of the running clubs popular 13 week structured program and is to be held at the Children’s Park, Nicholson St, Woodend. The event has an 8am start, with a BBQ after the run. We encourage family, friends and the community to join us in making this event special for our runners. October was the month for the Melbourne Marathon Festival, where club members enjoyed participating in either the 21km Half Marathon or the 42.2k full Marathon. Well done to our runners who took part and to the strong support supplied by club members on the day. Want to get involved and be part of the Macedon Ranges Running Club? We have welcoming groups in Gisborne, Kyneton, Lancefield & Romsey, Macedon, Riddells Creek and Woodend to help you start running. The region is certainly producing some terrific young basketballers. In July, local Under 12 players attended a skills day in Bendigo with Basketball Victoria Country. This resulted in ten players from the Macedon Ranges Basketball Association and Riddells Creek Junior Basketball Association being selected in the top 100 Victoria Country players to attend a four day tournament in Echuca over the September holidays. We also had four Under 14 aged players (pictured) attend Basketball Victoria Country’s elite Gold Nugget Camp in Shepparton in early October. Tess Barnes , Annabel Strahan, Jack Hassett and Jordan Phillips were selected to attend after completing the Academy program of 20 hours of training and two weekend camps over the winter season. At the Gold Nugget camp they competed with 47 boys and 47 girls attempting to make two U15 Basketball Victorian Country State teams to play at the Southern Cross Challenge in January. Up and coming local coach, Jason Palmer, was selected to coach at the Gold Nugget. Congratulations to Annabel Strahan and Jordan page 40

Do you know your superannuation obligations? Case Study Sole trader Chris failed to pay $2,500 superannuation guarantee for his employee Ron for the June 2015 quarter. Ron is 21 and a full time employee who has been working for Chris for two months. Chris is legally required to pay 9.5% of Ron’s ordinary times earnings to an eligible superannuation fund by the 28th day past the quarter. However Chris is new in business and was not aware of his superannuation obligations. The ATO became aware of the non-payment of superannuation and issued an audit notice. Chris then realised he hadn’t made any payment and went to his accountant for help. Chris’s accountant told him to obtain Ron’s nominated superannuation fund details and then prepared a Superannuation Guarantee Charge Statement that calculated the following:  Superannuation guarantee shortfall $2,500  Administration fee $20  Interest on shortfall owed to Ron $134.25. Interest is payable from the beginning of the applicable quarter rather than the end of the quarter When payments are late employers risk the following:  Large penalties and interest charges  Risk of staff loss  Legal action  Continued audits from the ATO Should you wish to discuss your superannuation obligations please feel free to contact Andrew Marshall or Janine Orpwood on 5427 8100 for an initial consultation.

A timely warning to clean up! We have been extensively involved in the recent Lancefield/ Cobaw fires, with more than 20 Woodend CFA Volunteers and several CFA vehicles working, often 24/7, to bring the terrible fires under control. During the fire period, over ten days, we visited dozens of homes in the Cobaw Ranges, and were amazed to find that many had done little or no clearing work. In many cases, the flames came to within metres of the houses and our crews had to work very hard to keep the fire away. Fortunately, we were able to save every home. On the other hand, it was very obvious who had done good clearing work around their homes, and these required very little or no work. With the onset of an early fire season, NOW is the time to start preparing to reduce the risks of fire danger to you, your family and your property. Why you should clean up The ferocity of a fire depends on a number of factors, including the weather, ground slope and especially the amount of ‘fuel’ on and around your house or property. Fuel is the only factor that you can alter before an unplanned fire starts. Fuel reduction is therefore one of the most important preventions you can undertake, with the most effective methods including mowing, raking, slashing and burning. Clearing volatile fuels such as grass, undergrowth, fallen leaves, bark, dead branches and twigs will lower the intensity of a fire. Reduce green and you won’t see red! In grasslands, the intensity of grassfires increases with the height and weight of the grass. Cut the long grass within 30 metres of the house, and then keep it under control. If grass cannot be kept short by grazing animals, it should be slashed well before the fire danger period so that cut grass has time to rot prior to summer. A well maintained garden will reduce the fire intensity around your house and make it safer for you to stay and defend your home, and put out spot fires started by embers from the main fire. Make sure all vegetation around the house is pruned, especially any overhanging branches, clear ground around trees from dead undergrowth and fallen branches. If you live on a slope, greater ground clearance is desirable, especially under established trees. Remove over-hanging branches and clear leaves and twigs from roof gutters - something you should do on a regular basis. Move wood piles and other flammable materials away from the house. Isolate potential fire sources such as incinerators or rubbish pits. It is likely that the Fire Danger Period will start much earlier this year. Please check the Macedon Ranges Shire Website for information and regulations about Burning Off. Submitted by 1st Lieutenant Mike Dornau, Woodend CFA

The Bioscope

In April 1914 an exciting show was advertised in the Woodend Star. A Bioscope show was a music hall and fairground attraction consisting of a travelling cinema and the heyday of the Bioscope was from the late 1890s until roughly the end of the First World War. Bioscope shows were fronted by the largest fairground organs and these formed the entire public face of the show. A stage was usually set up in front of the organ, and dancing girls would entertain the crowds between film shows. Films shown in the Bioscope were primitive, and the earliest of these were made by the showmen themselves. Later, films were commercially produced and these "silent" movies, made in black and white, had subtitles along the bottom of the screen (think SBS) and were accompanied by an organist who matched the music to the scene. Dark, threatening music accompanied the appearance of the villain while light, romantic notes were played as the heroine was clutched to the hero's manly bosom. Audiences were encouraged to hiss the villain and shout encouragement to the hero and heroine so a great time was held by all. Silent film stars had to use their faces to express every emotion – a skill that was lost on most actors when talkies took over. Films of the era included "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", "Bronco Billy and the School Mistress" and "Sea Dogs of Australia". Newsreels with film of important events became popular as well as documentaries. Showmen travelled through the suburbs and country areas by horse drawn vehicles or by train, presenting moving pictures in Town Halls and Mechanics' Institutes. Australian film production started early, with surprisingly, the Salvation Army being one of the main producers but overseas films from Great Britain and the USA soon overtook the market.
