Remembrance Day 2016 Friday November 11
Every year, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we pause to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars and peacekeeping operations. This year marks the 98th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). At 11.11am on November 11, 1918, the guns finally fell silent on the Western Front. The war was over. Woodend RSL Sub Branch will commemorate this anniversary at the Cenotaph in front of the Sub Branch, 32 Anslow Street, Woodend Proceedings commence at 10.30am, involving a short service, with participation from local schools and Braemar College Cadet Unit. Immediately following the service, there will be refreshments available inside the hall.
The Poppy Appeal
The Poppy Appeal contributes significantly to the fundraising work of the RSL. Poppies are available in various denominations from $1 to $50 and the money raised is used to assist both current and former serving members of the Australian and Allied defence forces and their dependents when in need. The RSL encourages all Australians to purchase a poppy and ‘Remember in November.’ Submitted by B Meldrum Woodend RSL Sub Branch

Twilight market,
Saturday November 26 | 4-8pm Now in its fourth year, Love Your Local Twilight Markets are excited to return to the Macedon Ranges. Showcasing predominantly local producers, crafters, artisans, musicians, small businesses, and with a fleet of amazing food trucks, live music, a licensed bar and kids activities, Woodend Twilight Market is a family friendly, fun, free, event. Love Your Local co-owners, Lisa Rees and Stacey Anderson held their first trial event at Buffalo Stadium in December 2012. The feedback was so overwhelmingly positive that they ran three more consecutive events a few months later, this time including Gisborne and Kyneton. Each year since, Love Your Local has expanded into other areas of Victoria and continues to grow today. They were this year's winners of the ‘Excellence in Events and Attractions’ award at the Macedon Ranges Business Excellence Awards and pride themselves on
supporting the local community in every region they go to. At each event, Love Your Local donates stalls to local community groups, sporting clubs, charities or fundraisers. Following Woodend Twilight Market on November 26, Love Your Local will return to Gisborne on December 10 for their big annual Christmas Market. Stallholder applications are available via the website; loveyourlocaltwilightmarkets.com, for all other enquiries, email loveyourlocal@live.com.

Trivia night to benefit St Mary’s Church fund for floor restoration forward to a full house on November 5 and encourage Dust off that game of Trivial Pursuit and start practicing for St Mary’s trivia night. The event begins at 7pm, Saturday November 5 and will benefit the fund to replace St Mary’s Church flooring and restore Woodend’s beautiful 152-year-old church back to its former glory. Many people in our community are familiar with St Mary’s buildings; the beautiful blue-stone church, with its unique collection of stained glass windows, and the wonderful Norma Richardson Hall, where many a fun evening has been had by both locals and visitors alike. But now, Woodend’s oldest church is in need of some repairs. Over the course of the last 152 years the flooring at St Mary’s in Buckland Street has endured both an underground spring and the ever dreaded termites. “Last year new drainage was installed and pest control was bought in to move both water and white ant. It is time to start the work to repair the damage and replace our floor”, said The Rev’d Melissa Clark of the Anglican Parish of Woodend-Trentham “A Trivia Night is a fun way folks can get involved with their community” she ads “We are looking
everybody to come out and support this event.” To participate, tickets are $10 per person, BYO snacks and drinks. “Make up a team of your smartest friends and come along for a great evening”said Rev Mel, “We’ll have a silent auction and some great ‘gold coin’ games, with prizes and auction items donated by some of our very generous local businesses. Everyone is welcome at St Mary’s”. To reserve a ticket or make donations of raffle items call Rev. Mel on 0411 722 718.

Newham Mechanics Institute is very proud to announce a special one-night only performance by renowned singer-songwriter Robert Forster on Friday November 18. Best known as a founding member of seminal Australian band The Go-Betweens, Robert is regarded as one of the country's great lyricists and a writer of quirky, introspective pop. President of the Mechanics Institute, Stephen Mitchell, is clearly excited. “This is a huge get for a tiny local hall like us. We've been trying to entice Robert for a couple of years now and we're elated that he's finally agreed!”. With the memoir to his friend and co-founder of The Go-Betweens, the late Grant McLennan finally out, Robert Forster is picking up his acoustic guitar and heading out to play a couple of special solo shows - one of them right here in the Macedon Ranges. “Grant & I” is an extraordinary portrait of an intense, creative and sometimes fraught friendship that represented a genuine meeting of artistic minds. Paul Kelly FAIRHURST CONVEYANCING and Secretarial Services described it as “an odyssey of friendship, ambition For all your and the struggle of art. Clear eyed and compelling”. The memoir was released on the back of Robert’s stunning solo album “Songs To Play” that received Ring Sue Fairhurst on world wide acclaim. Rolling Stone magazine gave it four stars, saying, “Tall Go-Between walks to his own beat with grace, wit and style.” 27 Urquhart Street, Woodend Together with Grant McLennan, Robert formed MVCA & AIC The Go-Betweens in Brisbane in 1977, and enjoyed years of great critical acclaim. In May 2001 “Cattle and Cane”, one of the Go-Betweens' signature songs, was selected by the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) as one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time. In 2010, Brisbane named a bridge after them. * 8 mm / 16 mm Film to DVD “This is an opportunity to see a renowned * VHS/Mini DV/ Hi 8 to DVD Australian musician in a unique and intimate setting,” * Filming/Editing Services he adds. “This isn't something an artist of Robert * Corporate & Special Events Productions Forster's standing does all that often.” The show AVPA Multi -Award Winners adds to an increasingly impressive list of acts that Accredited Producers the Newham Mechanics Institute has assembled in the last few years. Tickets are sure to be hot. Their last show sold out weeks in advance, so patrons are encouraged to book early.

Keeping Nepalese Babies Warm A big thank you to the crafts people of Woodend, the Macedon Ranges, Wangaratta and friends further afield for the amazing response to our appeal for knitted and crocheted rugs and beanies. Co-ordinated by the ladies of St Mary’s Anglican Church Guild, Woodend, over 100kgs of items, beautifully handmade with love, have been collected: 750 beanies, 150 rugs and over 80 jumpers. Incredible!! About a third of these are already in Kathmandu and the rest will be taken in November. Thank you to our couriers for taking bags stuffed with woolies on their Nepalese holidays, keeping our transport costs to a minimum. All the rugs and beanies will arrive just in time for distribution via local hospitals in the villages of Sotang, Paphlu and Bung before the cold winter months of December, January and February. Unfortunately, we can’t take any more items for Nepal at the moment, but don’t stop knitting! There are many needy people both here and overseas, St Mary’s Guild will find a way to send your knitting to them. Submitted by S Matthews | St Mary’s Guild Secretary

A Cultural Community space for Woodend? The Geburrh Centre Team is keen to meet newly appointed Councillors to the Macedon Ranges Shire this month and be part of discussions for future planning within the region. With over 400 community surveys now received, the consensus shows that the community is excited to explore new ideas for the existing High and Forest Street site, and that a contemporary library and refreshed public space is needed to provide quality community facilities as well as boost the economic development of the town and its value to the Shire as a tourist hotspot. Only one hour from Melbourne, and the corner turn for visitors travelling to Daylesford, this site has the opportunity to showcase the 400 professional artists that reside in the town. Woodend also bears the significant history of having three important indigenous groups with connections to this area, the Dja Wurrung, Wurundjeri and Taungurung. This project has the potential to showcase this history and to give recognition to the elders and their stories.

In addition, there is a need for an improved market space for the rapidly growing market activity on the site. A proposal for permanent outdoor covered areas, reminiscent of those found in Europe that have similar weather to ours, is suggested. If you have ideas you would like the team to present to council in December, please send them through this coming month via our community survey located in the library foyer or Bourkie's Bakery or via geburrhcentre.com. Open Gardens in the Ranges Garden Designfest, Australia’s premier open garden event, will expand in 2016 to include 3 gardens in the Macedon Ranges area on the weekend of 19 and 20 November. Garden Designfest offers the opportunity for the public to visit more than 40 private gardens which have been designed by some of Australia’s leading professional garden designers. The event commenced in 2004 and was initially restricted to gardens in the Melbourne metropolitan area. However, it has proved so succesful that in 2016 gardens in a number of Victorian regional areas, including the beautiful Macedon Ranges area, have been included.
To enable people to visit gardens in both Melbourne and the regions, Garden Designfest will be held over two weekends in November: ●● 12 and 13 November: gardens in Melbourne metropolitan area and Mornington Peninsula; ●● 19 and 20 November: gardens in Euroa, Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong, West Gippsland Malmsbury, Woodend and Gisborne. Garden Designfest is a Rotary project, organised on a voluntary basis and all proceeds go to charity. Since its inception in 2004, the project has donated almost $400,000. Tickets are $8 or $12 per garden available at the gates or $45 for a multi-garden ticket includes a guidebook and access to all gardens. Visit www.gardendesignfest.com.au for locations and tickets.

November 2016 Shingles vaccine for those 70 - 79 A vaccine against the Shingles virus will soon be freely available for people aged 70-79. The Commonwealth’s Immunise Australia Program will be rolled out over the coming months.
Bow-vember! It’s Movember with a twist
Shingles (Herpes Zoster virus) is an itching, tingling or painful blistering rash. It is related to a reactivation of chickenpox (varicella virus) experienced in earlier life. It is found most commonly in older people. Those aged 50-69 or 80 and over may have the vaccination if they wish, however the Government is not freely providing the vaccine to this group. The fee for the vaccine off script is around $220 depending on the pharmacy. The vaccine is not routinely recommended for those aged 50-59 but it is for those 60-69 who haven’t previously been vaccinated. Those who have previously had shingles are able to be vaccinated but they need to wait for 12 months before vaccination. We have not been told when our supplies of the vaccines will arrive – only that the program begins in November. Vaccination clinics will be arranged as soon as we receive supplies.
SMS messages re appointments When patients have bookings to see more than one clinician on the same day, they are automatically sent two SMS messages the day before the appointments. The first SMS confirms one appointment and the second message requests that you phone reception. This also happens when people sharing a mobile phone both have appointments on the same day. Do not be alarmed – our system is reading this as an error, which it isn’t. Please ignore the message to phone in. We will always ring you ourselves if we need to change your appointment. Of course if you get an SMS message asking you to ring to make an appointment regarding results, for Pap tests etc, please do so. Brooke St. Medical Centre – tel. (03) 5427 1002 page 12

Playgroup starts Christmas celebrations early Woodend Playgroup will be celebrating Christmas early this year with its annual Christmas party planned for November 27 between 10am and 1pm. Libby Nuttall, president of Woodend Playgroup, explains why the event will be held in November: “December is such a busy time of year and we've found that a lot of people go away in the lead up to Christmas. We didn't want any of our playgroup families to miss out so we've planned an early celebration to get everyone in the party spirit.” This year's celebration will be at Buffalo Stadium and the committee has been hard at work organising some fantastic activities for the children. Playgroup families can expect pony rides, a petting zoo, a jumping castle, three Luvaball sessions, face painting, Christmas craft activities, the Lion’s red train and most importantly, a visit from Santa who will have a small gift for each playgroup child. The Woodend Playgroup Christmas Party is open to fee-paying families that have attended playgroup in 2016. Message from the Premier
This summer is forecast to be a dangerous fire season. Fire Action Week is the time for all Victorians to begin preparing. Many communities throughout Victoria have been battling with persistent rain and rising flood waters. This rainfall has provided the stimulus for increased growth of vegetation in forested, bush and grass fire areas across the state. As summer intensifies, these regions will dry out quickly, increasing the risk of uncontrollable fires, especially over the Christmas and summer holiday period. Emergency services are working with communities, businesses, local councils and government to reduce
the risk in your area, while ensuring resources are in place to respond to all emergencies. However, it is up to you to understand the risk in your area, monitor conditions and take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of your household. Taking steps to get prepared before summer means you know what to do when a fire starts. Talk to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave and where to go to stay safe. Leaving early means leaving before a fire starts – not when you can see flames or smell smoke. Leaving early means avoiding panic, being trapped and making the wrong decisions that could be dire. Use Fire Action Week to prepare your home and property and think about summer fire safety, especially if you live in bush and grass fire prone areas. Taking the right steps now will help make your decisions in an emergency easier and clearer.
The steps to take are simple… ●● T alk to your household and neighbours about what you’ll do on high risk days and have a plan if fire threatens you and your home this summer ●● Check Fire Danger Ratings daily at emergency.vic.gov.au to find out how dangerous a fire would be if one started and monitor warnings, especially when the Fire Danger Rating is Severe, Extreme or Code Red ●● Pack an emergency kit of essentials – including important documents, a first aid kit, medications, blankets, water and a battery powered radio – and keep it handy Planning and preparing for fire is everyone’s responsibility. Make it yours this week and help keep your family and the community safe this summer. For more information on how to get prepared, go to emergency.vic.gov.au.
The Hon Daniel Andrews MP Premier of Victoria
Be Fire Ready. THE REASONS ARE BLACK AND WHITE.
Fire Action Week The Right Time To Prepare
1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days. 2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. 3. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark around your home. 4. Remove or prune shrubs near windows and well away from branches of mature trees. 5. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property – no branches within 10 metres. 6. Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter (if you are physically able to). 7. Remove all materials from around the home that could burn, such as boxes, furniture and woodpiles.

Come along and learn about methods to develop resilience and support mental health and wellbeing on Wednesday November 30, 7pm for 7.30pm start at Norma Richardson Hall, Woodend. Light refreshments served What is it all about? Life doesn’t always run smoothly. We all have challenges and hurdles to overcome from time to time. Resilience is the ability to bounce back. Do you need some tips and ideas to help you be more resilient? Come along and hear from Martin Heppell from The Resilience Project. He’ll teach us how to become more resilient based on the three areas of: ●● Gratitude: focus on what you’ve got and not what you don’t have ●● Mindfulness: the ability to feel present and calm and to shut off disruptive thoughts ●● Empathy: the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes - we’re hard wired to be kind! “Did you know that an adolescent brain in 2016 receives the same amount of information in a week as a 40 year old received in a year when adolescent” Hugh Van Cuylenburg, founder, The Resilience Project. FlexiRide service hits the road in Woodend The new on-demand weekday bus service, Flexiride, hit the road at the beginning of October to help residents and visitors in Woodend get about town. The bus is wheelchair accessible and small enough to get around Woodend’s narrower streets. The 18-seater bus departs from the central stop at Woodend Shopping Centre seven times each weekday between 9am–5pm, connecting locals to the Woodend Shopping Centre, Buffalo Sports Centre, the RSL, Brooke Street Medical Centre and Woodend Station. Locals can be picked up at one of the 28 designated stops located around the town and travel to the stop closest to their desired destination. Passengers using FlexiRide outside of the central stop must call 5422 1634 to request a pick-up. They will be given an estimated pick-up time at the stop. The service, operated by Dysons Group, is paper ticketed with full and concession fares available. A two hour ticket will cost $2.40 or $1.20 concession. Local member Mary-Anne Thomas rode the bus with long-time campaigner Betty Barned (pictured) who called the striking orange bus ‘a little beauty’. Ms
Thomas congratulated Betty on the tireless work she had done campaigning to get the bus. Ms Thomas said ‘the arrival of FlexiRide in Woodend gives people the peace of mind that the bus will be where they need it, when they need it. For just the same price as a standard fare, I encourage everyone to jump on board in the coming weeks and months and give Woodend's very own bus a go’. Stop maps and timetable information is available on ptv.vic.gov.au or by calling 1800 800 007. Submitted by T.Tyler for Office of Mary-Anne Thomas MP

Two Davids on the Local Arts Stage
We congratulate the winners of our school based local History Competition and all those who entered. Woodend Library put the entries on display from Thursday afternoon October 13. Next month's issue will carry a full report. The winners were: Charlie Tillyer, Dash Cannon, Paige Koliba and Molly Consiglio. Congratulations !
Woodend retired architect, David Faggetter and UK artist, David Hockney, were featured in this month’s ADFAS lectures. David Faggetter entertained an audience of sixty members and guests at Macedon Wine Room on October 6, when he spoke about his experience developing an urban design around an ancient oasis near Abu Dhabi. Clearly a project close to his heart, David’s talk resonated with his passion for the Middle East’s oases and corniches with their potential to create calm and cool refuges in the desert. The October 13 lecture featured the legendary David Hockney, whose works will be exhibited at the NGV from 11 November. UK art historian Mary Alexander’s lecture explored Hockney’s iconic painting, ‘Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy’ (1970). The ADFAS CV program continues to the end of the year, with a trip to Ballarat Gallery on October 27 to view the Archibald Exhibition 2016, followed by the annual Christmas Party on December 8. If you are interested in any of these activities and would like to join ADFAS CV, email adfascenvic@ gmail.com.au or collect a 2017 brochure at Woodend Information Centre. By joining ADFAS now, you will be eligible for the earlybird prize drawn at the Christmas Party.

Improvements for pedestrians
Pedestrians will find it easier to get around Woodend following Council’s successful application to the Transport Accident Commission for funding to address safety issues. Council will match the $26,050 provided by the TAC in order to improve pedestrian infrastructure in the township at a total cost of $52,100. The works will improve pedestrian access to Woodend railway station, particularly along High Street, Woodend. The project will be completed in two stages: ●● Stage 1 – improvement of pedestrian access to the main Woodend areas through the installation of footpath rumble strips. ●● Stage 2 – installation of zebra crossings across Anslow Street, Forest Street and Urquhart Street as well as on associated service roads to allow pedestrian right of way and greatly increase pedestrian safety for the vision impaired, children and older people as well as the general population. This is the second year in a row Council has successfully applied for funding under the TAC’s Local Government Grant program, which funds small-scale infrastructure treatments to address pedestrian and cyclist safety in line with Victoria's Road Safety Strategy 2013-2022.
U3A Macedon Ranges End of year program
There isn’t enough room to give details of all the interesting speakers we will be learning from, but there are a couple of special items to highlight. ●● On November 14 we are taking a bus trip to the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne – an allday trip including lunch. There may be a few seats on the bus if anyone would like to join us, but a week’s notice is needed. ●● On December 5 we hold our Annual General Meeting, of which we are required to give public notice. All present and former members are cordially invited to attend the AGM being held at the former Senior Citizens’ Rooms, Hamilton St, Gisborne, commencing at 10.45 am A committee will be elected to take over in the New Year. As always, new or returning members are very welcome to come to any of our events and join in our activities and discussions. Small Business Tax Concessions Consider Rachel’s Case Rachel, 54, has been operating a primary production small business in the Macedon Ranges for 12 years. Rachel has decided to downsize and sell her farm. The real estate agent has estimated it will be able to be sold for $1,000,000. She is wondering what the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) implications will be in her case. As Rachel qualifies as a Small Business Entity (SBE), she is able to take advantage of the small business CGT concessions. Based on the purchase and estimated sale price the gross gain is $500,000. As Rachel has held the property for greater than 12 months she is eligible for the general 50% discount prior to the application of the small business concessions. Rachel may elect to use the Replacement Asset Rollover giving her the option in the next two years to roll over the gain into another small business asset. As Rachel will subsequently turn 55 she may then elect to use the Retirement Concession under which she is not required to contribute the amount into superannuation and there will be no tax payable on the gain. The example can be demonstrated as below: Sale price $1,000,000 Purchase price $ 500,000 Gross Gain $ 500,000 50% General Discount ($ 250,000) Sub-total $ 250,000 Retirement Concession ($ 250,000) Net Capital Gain Nil

Yes, Christmas is just weeks away, but we can help! On Saturday, November 19 our Christmas themed stall will be outside the Woodend Newsagency, from 9am to 1pm. From cakes to cookies, sweet and savoury goodies, gift boxes to tree decorations, whether it's yummy or beautiful, the Red Cross elves are doing their superb best to lighten your load. Of course, this in turn helps those for whom Christmas isn't the wonderful celebration most of us enjoy, so come and see our offerings, and know that you are part of contributing to local, Australian and International Cross and the tireless volunteers in the field. Sadly, we have recently farewelled one of our members. We extend our sympathy and condolences to Jane Dawson and her family on the death of her mother, Patricia Dawson, a long term member of Woodend Red Cross. Here is the list of the lucky raffle winners, and, yes, one of the tickets was bought locally. 1st Prize: Bendigo Stay and Explore Pack Winner- Mr Bill Freeman- Charlton. 2nd Prize: Bendigo Discovery Pack (value $200) Winner- Ms Ann CollinsonHeathcote. 3rd Prize: Echuca Discovery Pack (value $95) Winner-Heather, Romsey Rd, Hesket. A Japanese story Macedon Ranges Film Society's October screening featured the 2003 award winning Australian film 'Japanese Story'. A cross-cultural drama-romance, ‘Japanese Story’ stars Toni Collette as a geologist and Gotaro Tsunashima as a Japanese man whose father has interests in an iron ore mine in the Pilbara. Collette's character Sandy is assigned to show the Japanese man Hiromitsu around the region, however as she has no Japanese language skills and Hiromitsu has no understanding of Australian culture or the outback and its dangers. Various adventures and misadventures and some romance led to a tragic climactic event and an emotional and moving conclusion. Excellent Australian film making by a predominantly female team headed by Director Sue Brooks, Producer Sue Maslin, Writer Alison Tilson and Editor Jill Bilcock. Music composed by Elizabeth Drake. Film Society members evoking the Japanese flavour of the film. Macedon Ranges Film Society meets on the second Wednesday each month at Woodend Community Centre. Film notes and an informal supper are part of the evening. MRFS is a membership-based club; initial enquiries by email to mrfilmsociety@gmail.com or call Lorraine 5427 0921 or Christine 5429 5452. Not all skin cancer checks are equal For peace of mind, see an experienced doctor accredited by the Skin Cancer College of Australasia, and have your skin checked with the latest MoleMax digital scanning technology
• Get your skin checked before it sustains any more damage this summer • 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70 • The sooner your skin cancer is diagnosed and treated, the greater your chance of survival
Ranges Medical is the only practice in the Macedon Ranges using the world-leading MoleMax digital epiluminescence microscope to examine and record skin lesions. Through comprehensive mole mapping and expert analysis, we can reliably monitor changes, detect skin cancers at an early stage and avoid unnecessary excisions. We can provide advanced surgical treatment in-house, including skin grafts and skin flap surgery. Early detection and treatment of skin cancer increases survival rates and reduces pain and scarring.

Catch out skin cancer this summer Barry Mann is passionate about solar power and cricket. Unfortunately, the combination could kill him. ‘When I’m on the oval and the solar panels are glinting on Woodend Cricket Club’s roof, I love contemplating the clean energy they’re generating. Simultaneously, I worry about developing skin cancer!’ Barry plays cricket up to 40 days per year. ‘I wear sunscreen, a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses, but in my youth I used no sun protection and I’ll probably pay for that.’ ‘Sun exposure causes almost all skin cancers,’ says Dr Peter Dawkins, from Ranges Medical in New Gisborne, who holds a Diploma in Skin Cancer Medicine and is accredited by the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. ‘Skin cancer kills more Australians than the road toll, and two-thirds are men.‘Sunburn can occur in just 15 minutes, causing permanent, irreversible skin damage and increasing the risk of skin cancer,’ Dr Dawkins says.
W OODEND H EARING C ENTRE WOODEND Did you know 1 out of 6 Australians HEARING CENTRE suffer from hearing loss? • Are you having problems understanding what people say? • Do you have problems hearing in background noise? • Have you worked in a noisy environment? If you answered yes to any of the above, you may have a hearing loss.
‘Use sun protection and get regular skin checks. Early detection and treatment of skin cancer increases your chance of survival and reduces pain and scarring. ‘Worryingly, a recent Cancer Council study showed that 35% of women and 40% of men had not had their skin examined in the past year.’ Dr Dawkins’ team at Ranges Medical uses a worldleading MoleMax scanner for comprehensive mole monitoring - available nowhere else in the Macedon Ranges. ‘We’ve identified numerous skin cancers of which patients were unaware, including early melanomas. Our practice is equipped for treating skin cancers that would previously have been referred to city centres.’ Woodender Alan Reid doesn’t play cricket, but he loves to surf in the sun. He has his skin checked at Ranges Medical. ‘It’s quick and simple,’ says Alan. ‘The Molemax records a detailed body map, so any changes are easy to spot at the next check-up and I don’t have to rely on my wife’s memory to tell me if a mole on my back has altered. ‘I frequently got sunburnt when I was a kid. Now, I wear a full-length wetsuit and waterproof sunscreen in the surf. I make my kids take care of their skin too. They’ll appreciate it later!’ The SunSmart UV Alert is reported daily at www. bom.gov.au/uv and is also available as an app. When the UV level is 3 or higher, sun protection is needed. Hobby beautifies into successful business
Story Wise Woodend
Samantha Moore is a local business success story, having turned a hobby into an award-winning beauty business. She established Ramai Skin & Body Care in 2012 and has built it all the while as a single parent to son Aiden. Driven by an ambition to have the leading beauty salon in the Macedon Ranges, Samantha aims to double client numbers each year, and expects more than 250 clients by the end of 2016. Ramai prides itself on catering for people wanting later than normal trading hours and a more child friendly environment. The salon operates 9am to 9pm five days a week. Samantha is investigating relocating to larger premises but a major focus of the business will continue to be providing a home like ambience and a safe, family friendly environment. A year after giving birth to both Ramai and her son, Samantha won Young Business Person of the Year in the Macedon Ranges Business Excellence Awards. She has since been a finalist three times in this category. In 2014 she was a Finalist in the Ausmumpreneur Awards. Staff member Brooke Young is motivated to excel and recently won Business Employee of the Year in the Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Youth Awards.

The best is yet to come Duneira Mt Macedon
The next few weeks at Duneira will be the busiest of the Spring season. Not only is late October/early November the time to visit the famous bluebell driveway but numerous events throughout the house and garden will delight and amaze! This Saturday night (29/10) be prepared to be scared with two evening Ghost Tours run by Lantern Ghost Tours. Family tickets are available. Sunday (30/10) is all about gardens and we are delighted to have Michael McCoy present a lecture and take us on a tour of the garden. Our oriental carpet specialist Dr Susan Scollay brings the garden into the house with her illustrated lecture on the Duneira carpet collection. Early November brings interesting events, including a literary event “Ghost Girls” with Cath Ferla, where Cath will talk on writing for book and screen; a great session for budding writers of any age. You can also meet Rachael Kohn, presenter of “The Spirit of Things” on ABC Radio National for the past 19 years, who will be ‘On the Couch’ with Jacky Ogeil in an interesting discussion of Rachael’s life and work. If you’ve ever heard Rachael’s show, you’ll love this opportunity to meet her in person. Take a tour of the garden with well-known musician and gardener Simon Rickard who will open your eyes (and ears) to the sounds that various trees make. Many speciality timbers are present at Duneira that are traditionally used in musical instrument. Later in November, join us for a weekend of art and artists through talks, tours and films, experience a delighted concert performed by Anne HarveyNagl (Vienna-based violinist who will perform exclusively at Duneira) and Jacky Ogeil on the music of the famous Menuhins who were regular visitors to Duneira earlier last century. These and many more opportunities to explore are detailed on www.duneira.com.au. Submitted by I. O’Duffy, Duneira

Andrea Norden was recently faced with the question: “What would you like for your birthday this year?”. She realised she didn’t really want for anything, and this conclusion began an extraordinary journey to deliver a vital piece of medical equipment to an isolated community in Timor Leste (East Timor). Instead of perfume, wine or chocolates; birthday guests were kindly asked to contribute an equivalent amount in cash, which was then used to purchase an autoclave (a machine to sterilise medical instruments) for a local community health centre, which Andrea then delivered, installed and taught local staff to use. Andrea has been a member of the Macedon Ranges Friends of East Timor (MRFoET) group for 2 years. The Woodend mother of three, first heard about the group through her work as a local Maternal Child Health Nurse.
Andrea Norden, second from the right, with Turiscai health centre staff.
Macedon Ranges Shire Council generously supported MRFoET to print 100 copies of the booklet which Andrea took with her. With many expectant mothers unable to read, it is important to have relevant information with strong visual demonstration of potential problems or issues. Installation of the sterilisation machine also included a voltage regulator to cope with power surges, and a water distillation facility to prepare water before being placed in the steriliser. Andrea said that gathering information from the local staff about the health centre’s needs will form an important part of MRFoET future planning. Andrea also had the opportunity to connect with other groups in Dili including Marie Stopes International, Wateraid, Alola, and Rotary, which will also provide a wider perspective of where needs can be best met. Our local MRFoET group works with other organisations such as the Alola Foundation, which was established by Australian born, former East Timorese first lady, Kirsty Sword-Gusmao. Ms SwordGusmao will be the guest speaker at an upcoming event called “Talking Timor” to be held in Kyneton (see next page) If you would like further information please call Andrea on 0403 043222. MRFoET meet at the Victoria Hotel, Woodend on the 1st Monday of every month. If you would like further information about the group contact Andrea or Fran Wigley on 0411 208 448 or mrfoet@gmail.com. Written by Marion Coulsen, phote supplies by Andrea Norden
Each ‘Friends of Group’ in Australia is aligned with a specific region in East Timor, and our area is based on the village of Turiscai in the Manufahi District. This village has a population of approximately 7000 people and is in the mountains inland from the capital Dili. The village was only connected to electricity about eighteen months ago, there is no reticulated water system, and the 80km drive from Dili takes four to five hours due to the poor condition of the roads. In preparation for her trip, Andrea edited and sourced photos for a maternal child health booklet at the request of the Turiscai health centre staff.

Talking Timor with Kirsty Sword Gusmao
Dinner and music with a Timorese flavour, a silent auction and lots of fun! Kirsty Sword Gusmao, former Australian aid worker and former wife of Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister, will speak at a special event on Friday November 18 at Kyneton Mechanics Institute. Dr Kirsty Sword Gusmao AO, founder of the Alola Foundation will speak about her role as Education Ambassador and share her Timor experiences. She was appointed by the President Dr. Jose Ramos Horta as Goodwill Ambassador for Education in October 2007. This appointment was in recognition of Kirsty's tireless efforts to date and to formalize future endeavors in addressing the educational priorities of Timor-Leste.
In June 2015 Kirsty was honoured to receive an Order of Australia for service to relations between Timor-Leste and Australia in the education sector, as well as being an advocate for improved health and living conditions for the Timorese people. This is an honour she shares very much with her colleagues at Fundasaun Alola who have been on the frontline of the battle against poverty, ignorance, discrimination and ill health in Timor-Leste since 2001. Woodend Rotary is going from strength Club of Woodend to strength with a very active program of guest CLUB HIGHLIGHTS AND EVENTS speakers at meetings, fundraising and regular projects to keep our members busy working for the community. The committee for the Kyneton Air show recently made the unfortunate but necessary decision to postpone the Kyneton Air Show due to the issues of recent rain making the venue unsafe for preparation and conducting the event itself. The condition of the grass runway meant that planes were becoming bogged which was the same for the car parks. Planning and preparations are continuing and the committee will meet again in November to schedule the new date early in 2017. Guest Speaker A recent guest speaker Bev Watson gave a wonderful presentation on living with Polio for 60 years. Bev contracted Polio in Australia in 1955 just 6 weeks prior to the introduction of the Salk vaccine. Everyone left with a better understanding of Polio and the achievements possible with a positive attitude and determination. A cheque for $2000 from the local Rotary clubs (Woodend, Gisborne, Castlemaine and Gisborne) was presented to Bev to go towards the Post Polio conference held each year.
There are an estimated 400,000 people in Australia with Polio. Whilst Rotary is leading the charge to rid the world of Polio the local clubs are doing their bit to support a group of those people living with Polio. In November we welcome the following guest speakers; ●● Nov 3: Mary Hitchcock talking on PTSD ●● Nov 10: Peter Duras –‘A funny thing happened on the way to the Olympics”. Peter was physiotherapists for many Olympic and Commonwealth games teams. We welcome visitors to our weekly meetings at the Victoria Hotel 6.45pm for 7pm start. Reflexology
how does it work? Reflexology is a holistic, non-invasive modality that compliments other therapies and modern medicine from conception to aged-care. Reflexology is the application of pressure and soothing techniques to areas on the feet, hands, face & ears. It is based on the principle that all components of the body are reflected in these areas. Reflexology stimulates the circulation to restore energy flow, which helps clear blockages that can occur due to stress, toxins, illness, emotions and injury. This modality has been a part of human life for over 3000 years that was used by the Egyptians and Chinese, now it is once again part of health care systems around the world. How will Reflexology help you? Reflexology promotes balance in physical, mental, emotional and energetic levels of the human body. It also produces the most profound and deep relaxation. It is in the state of deep relaxation that system levels are reduced and feelings of well-being are evident. Regular sessions of reflexology condition you to a more relaxed way of being. This modality will help you stay healthy, improve daily wellbeing and maintain vitality. Allow time to experience the nurturing and reflection, afforded by a caring and professional reflexologist. Achieving peace of mind, away from your daily demands and induces a more relaxed way of being. Special offer at Cosmic Cocoon Buy six treatments for the cost of five. What will Woodend look like ten years from now? What will our kids contribute to the town? How do we encourage our kids growing up in Woodend today to be the dreamers, doers, contributors and community leaders of tomorrow? The Passport Challenge kicks off this term, giving kids (aged 10-17) a passport divided into SIX key areas of capital: financial, manufactured, intellectual, social, human and natural. All kids must choose an area and decide on a personal project, something can do individually or in pairs to contribute positively to the local or global community. It's about kids building or creating capital to have a positive impact on the world around them! Based on Jane Gleeson-White's book SIX CAPITALS, the kids can choose to invest their time or resources, create something, produce something for community benefit, give something, connect people, or work to sustain their environment. They present their project at the end of term to graduate from the 2016 Field Trip Program and it's happening now!

Cheese Demonstration and Lunch a success Woodend Rotary held the third session in the series of Macedon Ranges Cooking demonstrations and lunch on Saturday 8th October with 26 people attending to learn about cheese making. Members of Woodend Rotary Daniel Rigoni and President Josephine Falzarano lead the demonstration covering Ricotta, Cherve and Mozzarella. The demonstration was followed by lunch consisting of anti-pasta platters, Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni, Ratatouille and salad all served with wine. Notes were provided to all participants to ensure they could repeat what they had learnt at home. This completed the series which covered Passata, bread dough, Sausages, Salami and Cheese. It was great hearing from participants who had already applied their knowledge with one family recently making 30kg of salami after attending an earlier session. “Whose wives are they anyway”
a farce by Michael Parker. The Mount Player's final production for 2016 “Whose Wives Are They Anyway” is in its final two weeks of rehearsals with the Gala Opening night on Friday November 18. This is one show you do not want to miss! Director, Frank Harvey has had an absolute ball directing his wonderfully talented cast, backed by a very funny script and can assure this hilarious play will not disappoint. From go to wo it is a downward spiral of chaos, confusion, double entendre, characters in various stages of undress, cross dressing and then finally the truth! It is seven years since The Mount Players staged the farce “Caught In The Act” also directed by Frank Harvey, who says that this show is even whackier! Tickets are already selling fast so do yourself a favour and book your ticket early. WOODEND B WLING CLUB NEWS A wet start to the new pennant season The start of the new Midweek Pennant Season was a complete contrast to last year. This year we were completely washed out as the rain continued to fall, whereas last year the opening game had to be cancelled due to the extreme heat in early October. Fortunately, the weather improved to get the Saturday Season underway a few days later. Woodend has teams competing in both Divisions 1 and 3 on both Tuesdays and Saturdays. The season runs from early October to mid-December, and then continues from mid-January to March. Last year several of our teams made the Finals, but did not enjoy Grand Final glory. Fingers crossed we can do better this year. Thinking of trying lawn bowls? If you have thought about giving lawn bowls a try, why not give us a call and we can organise a trial session. Or, if you have never thought of giving it a go, why not come and try? As we have said before, lawn bowls is no longer the ‘old person’s game’ many believe, and is now played by people of all ages. In fact, most of the players in the Australian Team are in their twenties and thirties, and some are still in their teens. We can provide everything you need, the bowls and important guidance from one of our experienced players. And it’s free! It’s warming up for barefoot bowls The Woodend Bowling Club offers a Barefoot Bowls program throughout the year, but obviously it is more fun and enjoyable in the warmer months. We have a wide range of lawn bowls sets available, so you just need to turn up and take your shoes off for a great fun night. Although you can also bowl with flat-soled shoes. Children are welcome, but parental supervision is required. You can book Barefoot Bowls in Woodend for a night of fun, a great party, work Christmas party, fund-raising and so much more. With the addition of a powerful lighting system on the carpet green that enables bowling at night as well. We can also provide friendly club members to help train you on the art of bowling for those who want to learn, or we can just let you go and experience the fun yourself. We have a well-stocked fully licensed bar which can be opened with people to serve you, and you pay our very reasonable bowls club prices (sorry but due license restrictions no BYO allowed). You just supply the fun!
Woodend Fire Brigade celebrates 120th years At about 4am on Wednesday, October 14 1896, a fire originated in the stables at the rear of the All Nation’s Hotel on the corner of High and Anslow Streets. Soon after, a group of a dozen gentlemen met to consider the “desirability of forming a Fire Brigade in Woodend”. It was moved that this proceed, to consist of fifteen members and to be named the Woodend Fire Brigade. On Monday November 21, the members of the Brigade met, having received a letter from the Shire granting the use of its fire appliances, but the erection of a depot and fire bell was delayed. The December 24 1897 issue of the Woodend Star contained a report on the new reel. It stated that “the new fire reel, built under order from the Newham Shire Council, for the use of the Woodend Fire Brigade, is now completed, and having inspected it, we can state with confidence that either for the use at a fire or demonstration, the reel is second to none at present in use in the colony, and one of which Firemen, as well as the builder, may feel justly proud”. Is there room for a fire truck at your house? Woodend CFA has an excellent record in turning out to fires and other incidents in our region. However, during recent inspections of the area it was discovered that a lot of properties do not have safe access for fire trucks to get close to the house or other important assets. In fact, at one property we were unable to get down the driveway. Fire trucks are very large vehicles and they need room to enter your driveway and somewhere to turn around. (See picture on back page) A driveway needs at least a four by four metre clearance and adequate access through gates. Bridges and culverts on private land also need to be able to carry the weight of a fire truck. See you at Woodend Farmer’s Market We have started our annual pre-summer Community Safety Information Sessions, beginning with our presence at the Woodend Farmer’s Market in November, December and January. On Saturday November 5, we will also be running the Sausage Sizzle at the market, which not only helps provide some fund-raising for the Brigade, it also gives you the opportunity to enjoy a well-cooked delicious sausage. A huge thank you to the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group for giving us this opportunity.
