Out of the Shadows Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group Invites YOU to the Lifeline Out of the Shadows and Into the Light Walk 2016 World Suicide Prevention Day is in September – We will be walking again on Sunday 11th September to help shine a big bright light on this important topic in our local community. This will be our third walk locally. Each year we have seen the community support for this event grow. Mental health issues do not discriminate, with 1 in 5 Australians in any 12-month period of time living with mental illhealth it is very likely that each of us know someone (or are that someone) who could benefit from raising awareness, breaking down the stigma and working harder to improve access to the support and services that can help. We walk together on September 11 to remember those we have loved and lost to suicide. We walk together to provide ongoing hope for recovery to those who live with mental health issues, their family, friends and carers. We walk together to raise awareness and to reduce stigma for mental health issues and suicide prevention in our local and surrounding communities, to have new conversations that are helpful. By working (and walking) together we can help prevent suicide. To join us please register at www.outoftheshadows.org.au and click on find a walk, or registrations will be open on the day at 8:30am The walk will start at the Woodend Children’s Park (Nicholson St) and continue along the beautiful 5 Mile Creek to Ruby McKenzie Park and back again. This community event is FREE but we do encourage you to make a donation to Lifeline. T-Shirts and refreshments will be available to purchase. Soul Food art for the CFA

A gorgeous collection of Soul Food paintings have been created to raise funds in support of the local CFA. The artists are enthusiastic participants in the Passion for Painting art group, which meets every Friday at Embrace Art Studio in Carlsruhe. Local artist, Padma, leads the class. She says, “This group was designed to inspire creative expression, bring people together in a relaxed, fun atmosphere while learning a range of art practices AND make gorgeous artworks to raise funds for our fire fighters”. The art classes began 5 years ago and in 2015 they mounted their first fundraising exhibition, held at Black Anther Gallery, 42 Anslow St, Woodend. The original paintings will be on view at Paysanne Restaurant, High St. Woodend until September 3 then on September 4 from 11 am - 4pm at the CFA Wine and Food Festival, Carlsruhe (held at heritage listed Degraves Mill, 688 Cobb and Co Rd.). From September 6 the art can be viewed at Duck, Duck and Larder on Piper St. Kyneton. The five new Soul Food mandala artworks will be re-produced as high quality postcards, priced at $2 each with profits to the CFA. The cards will be available locally at supporting shops, restaurants and galleries. For more information call Padma (weekdays before 6 pm ), Tel: 5422 3322.

Woodend’s flexiride bus on the road The new Woodend FlexiRide Bus Service is expected to be on the road beginning October 2016. In February and March this year Public Transport Victoria held community meetings to hear Woodend residents’ thoughts on how FlexiRide should work to meet their public transport needs. Fifty residents attended the meeting and eighty locals completed a survey to ascertain the needs of the community in regards to the bus service. The survey results indicated that FlexiRide should operate in hourly intervals, and be a predominantly weekday service, with Thursday anticipated to be its busiest day. There was only limited demand for a weekend service. Many locals expressed a desire for the bus to operate beyond the proposed boundaries of the Woodend township. Labor Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas said, “I would like to thank everyone who attended the community forum in March and all those who filled in surveys, your voices have been heard and FlexiRide is on track to start in October. Woodend will finally have an essential service the community has been asking for.” Submitted by Kate-Ida Holleman

The Geburrh Centre project, a community led initiative to invigorate the community centre precinct in Woodend was successfully launched this month. Our website www. geburrhcentre.com has received hundreds of views, and the online survey it links to has similarly had hundreds of submissions completed. Thank you to everyone who has so far participated in the discussion as to what you would like built on that site and why. The online submissions have been thorough and well considered. For those who have no access to view us online, hard copies have been placed at Woodend’s Produce Store, Neighbourhood House, Bourkies Bakehouse, and the foyer of the Woodend Library and are collected regularly. In addition, active discussions have been held with the Woodend Tennis Club, Neighbourhood House, Sustainability Group, Heritage Society, Rotary and Lions, and Senior Citizens so far. For anyone wishing to discuss this project in person with a member of our Team, please do not hesitate to contact us at geburrhcentre@gmail.com to arrange a time. As a result of the feedback received so far, the project’s name Geburrh (pronounced Jabor) has

been identified as a matter for further discussion. It is a Wurundjeri name for Mount Macedon, which sits on Dja Dja Wurrung land and our group is working towards discussions with the Dja Dja Wurrung Council to shape our collective ideas further. This is a project of cultural and historical significance and it is imperative that we get this consultative stage done properly in order to achieve the best possible outcome for the Macedon Ranges Shire. Work is being done behind the scenes to raise an expression of interest with Regional Development Victoria for a full feasibility and business plan study of the site, based upon the material that you, the public, are sending through. Please keep those ideas coming, and invite your children and grandparents to participate also. It is a site that involves the whole community, potentially the whole region and will service us all in the years to come. Submitted bu J Walduck

Macedon Ranges U3A

There are only two Mondays left in September for term 3, Semester 2. Our morning speakers are listed below, but we have an afternoon discussion session after lunch each Monday also. All meetings take place at the former Senior Citizens’ Hall in Hamilton St, Gisborne, near the Library. They start at 10.30 a.m., and visitors are welcome. The first visit is free, but if you would like to come back for more, we will ask you to become a member. (A proportional membership fee is charged for those who join later in the year.) • Monday September 5. Morning speaker is Brian Austin, a retired dentist. Brian gave a very interesting talk a few months ago on the history of dentistry. This time he has some things to say about modern dentistry, and some of them may be a little controversial! • Monday September 12 – Glenn Turnbull will be giving some historical insights from the archives of two well-known Melbourne secondary schools, Melbourne High, and Strathcona. This is the last day of term, but we hope to have news for our October program for next month’s edition. There’s plenty to listen to, learn about, and stimulate your “little grey cells”, and that’s why U3A is such a great place to be. If you bring your own lunch, you can join the group and chat over lunch (tea and coffee provided, but bring your own mug). Then stay for an hour’s discussion about - well, practically anything! Although it’s a University, we don’t make you do exams! For further details, please contact our President, Malcolm Colquhoun, on 5426 2331, or email malcolmac@hotmail.com. Submitted by Jo Clancy

And it’s GOLD for Woodend Kinder! On Saturday 30 July the Woodend Kinder Committee hosted its Olympic-themed trivia night with the help of 100 guests sporting national costumes and a competitive spirit! Thanks to the generous support of local businesses and members of the extended Woodend Kindergarten community, the Committee raised a fantastic $7,500 from ticket sales, auction items and sponsorships.

WOODEND KINDER TRIVIA NIGHT

thank you

to all our local supporters!

“We were absolutely delighted by the support we received from so many local businesses. It was particularly appreciated given the large number of requests the businesses receive each and every week from local groups,” said Laurissa Mailler, president of the Woodend Kinder Committee. The funds raised will go towards new outdoor play equipment, which will be accessible to all children who attend the three and four-year-old kinder programs at Woodend Kindergarten. “We have received great support from the Early Years team at the Macedon Ranges Shire Council, and we’re working together to find a solution for the outdoor play area,” said Laurissa. The Canadian Lumberjacks were victorious on the night, taking home a great gift pack of local goodies. “We were delighted with the great support from all involved and the enthusiasm from all the teams! It all contributed to a great atmosphere and a fantastic night out.” Submitted by L.Mailler

September 2016 Manager of the Year

L to R: Tracy Clarke, Aust Assoc of Practice Management, Vic President; Deborah Stidwell, Practice Manager, Brooke Street Medical Centre; Wendy Shepherd, General Manager Operations, Australian General Practice Accreditation Ltd.

Celebrations are on at Brooke Street Medical Centre where Deb Stidwell has won the honour of Practice Manager of the Year, Victoria. We are not surprised - Deb embodies all the qualities you want in a Practice Manager. She keenly supports innovations like the development of the Practice’s rehabilitation gym, pain and travel clinics. Deb is also a canny business manager and is very accessible - she makes it her business to support staff at the practice and build on ideas for improvement from the team. Aside from running such a large and dynamic practice, Deb is active in the Macedon Ranges Reconciliation group and the Macedon Ranges Shire ICE working group. Deb also works with other practice managers in order to support one another in the complex world of general practice management. Brooke Street Medical Centre now waits with excitement to see whether Deb takes out the national award. This will be announced at the Australian Association of Practice Management Conference in October.

Travel Health Yellow Fever is a serious disease spread by mosquitoes in parts of Africa, Central America and South America. Yellow Fever is the only vaccination that is mandatory under International Health Regulation for travellers entering and passing through countries with known Yellow Fever. This disease has no cure and up to 50% of severely affected persons who aren’t treated will die. Brooke Street Medical Centre is a designated Yellow Fever vaccinating clinic - we have been licensed by the Department of Health to access the vaccine and legally provide you with the World Health Organisation’s International Certificate of vaccination. Sometimes it can be difficult to work out if you need the vaccine for the destinations you are visiting; so it’s a good idea to visit our travel nurse at least a month prior to travel with a clear idea of your itinerary. Yellow Fever vaccine is very safe for most people but for those with certain pre-existing conditions it may have some potentially serious side effects. While some countries only allow those health professionals with specific Yellow Fever training to provide the vaccine, Australia does not require this. It’s therefore useful to consider the expertise of health providers when you require Yellow Fever vaccine. At Brooke Street, regular travel medicine training is provided to staff involved in this area of practice and our travel health nurse has several years of post-graduate travel medicine education. You can be reassured that you will be assessed carefully and be receiving the vaccine from staff who are proficient with its use. We keep many travel vaccines including Yellow Fever on site.

Pap smears & Compass trial Are you overdue for your Pap smear? Call us to arrange your appointment for this important test. Women born on or after 1/7/1980 and aged at least 25 are eligible to take part in the “Compass Trial”. Depending which trial arm you are allocated to, you may not need to have another Pap for 5 years. Ask your health provider about the trial - of course if you don’t wish to take part, that’s fine. Landcare week and our Lake Earnshaw Plan Lake Earnshaw is a hidden gem found between the Gilbert Gordon Oval and Five Mile Creek. It has a history of being Woodend’s former swimming pool and an angler’s paradise. Once invaded by weeds, Woodend Landcare’s Thursday Crew have been working solidly in the area to unearth and restore the former qualities of the site and take it in a new direction. Woodend Landcare sees great value in having a ‘wild zone’ so close to the towns centre. We’re planning new plantings that will enhance the area and continue the wildlife corridor along Five Mile Creek. We’re proposing pathways that link existing public areas and protect sensitive ecosystems. And we’re envisioning structures that encourage engagement with the natural environment. These Lake Earnshaw plans, developed by Pene Rice and the Thursday crew, are currently on display in our Coles window and on our website (www. woodendlandcare.wordpress.com). We’d love to hear your thoughts, suggestions or dreams for this special part of Woodend. Email us at woodendlandcare@ gmail.com. Comments close on the 10th of September. The plan will also be on display at our Woodend Landcare stall at the Woodend Farmers Market on Saturday the 3rd September. Come and have a chat with us!

Also, as part of Landcare Week (5-11 September), we have our annual display in the Woodend Library. This year, we celebrate the delightful local places that are great to explore with kids. This will link with the kid’s nature activities in the library over the September school holidays.

Women’s Health Week: no more elephants in the room! When it comes to health, every woman has an elephant in the room. It’s time to start talking. Jean Hailes for Women’s Health will be getting rid of those elephants during Women’s Health Week 2016 (5-9 September). Women can be good talkers, but when it comes to health we often don’t take the time to ask questions, seek out credible information and work out a sound plan of action. Across five days, Women’s Health Week will be online and on-the-ground. This year’s theme is ‘Am I Normal?,’ giving women across Australia the chance to learn more about their health and talk about issues they might not usually discuss. Free events, articles, videos, podcasts, recipes, tools and much more will be supported by a range of experts to help make women’s health a priority. To celebrate the week Ranges Medical in New Gisborne invites you to come along to a ‘free mini health check’ and information stall on Tuesday 6th September from 08:30-12:30am. www. rangesmedical.com.au “This is a great opportunity for women to find out what they need to know about women’s health, what they want to know and what’s not being talked about,” says Jean Hailes Executive Director Janet Michelmore. “‘Am I Normal’ is such an important theme for women,” says Jean Hailes Deputy CEO Dr Mandy Deeks. “It’s a question we all ask ourselves at some stage, whether it’s about weight, body image, mental health or sex.” Ranges Medical general practice clinic in New Gisborne encourages women to join in the Women’s Health Week conversation by taking part in their free mini health check. Dr. Anne Peterson says …”I am passionate about women’s health and talking about what is ‘normal’. Come along and have a blood pressure and blood sugar check, grab a show bag and have a chat…” Join thousands of women across Australia by registering today at womenshealthweek.com.au. Submitted by J. Western Water offers community grants Western Water is encouraging schools, community and environmental groups in Woodend to apply for up to $2000 in funding under its Sammy’s Water Week Grants program. Named for Western Water’s slithering mascot Sammy Snake, the grants are available for school or community gardens or environmental projects. The grants aim to help create sustainable and liveable communities across our region. Groups or schools applying for grants must meet the grants criteria of making the most of local water supplies, providing clear benefits to the school or wider community and demonstrating sustainability practices. The grants can be used to pay for plants, equipment or watering systems. Previous winners have included St Ambrose Primary School and Woodend Landcare. All projects must take place within Western Water’s service area. The grants are part of Western Water’s Corporate Social Responsibility Program, which aims to give back to the community. For more information and eligibility criteria, go to westernwater.com.au or call 9218 5527. Entries must be in by 23 September and winners will be announced during Water Week in October. This distinctive combination means that clients at her boutique firm, JS Law, get understanding through difficult times, and technical legal expertise informed by real world and corporate experience. The specialist family and criminal law firm has built up over the past five years, supporting clients and contributing to the Macedon Ranges community where Juliana has lived for two decades. JS Law regularly mentors local secondary and university students. Through work experience with Juliana, young people gain insights into what happens day-to-day in a busy law firm. From Melbourne, Saray Iluminado will perform a beautiful concert of new interpretations of Jewish & Balkan music on authentic instruments. This will be a delightful experience in the intimate surroundings of the Duneira lounge room. While you’re in the mood for music, get ready for five concerts in October. Goods & Services Tax on purchase of farmland Consider George’s case George has been farming potatoes in Trentham as part of the family business for many years. He has finally gathered together enough funds to purchase his first farming property. George is concerned about the Goods & Services Tax (GST) applicable to the purchase as the vendor is registered for GST and has indicated there may be GST charged on top of the purchase price.

GST Implications There will be no GST applicable to the purchase of farmland if the following conditions are met.    

The land was used for a farming business for at least five years immediately before the sale; and The buyer intends to use it for a farming business; and Both parties to the contract are registered for GST; and The contract clearly specifies there will be no GST charged

In review of these conditions, George has confirmed with the vendor that they have been operating a farming business on the property for over five years and that they are GST registered. George also intends to run a farming business on the land, has himself registered for GST and confirmed with his legal representative that the contract correctly identified the transaction is to be GST free purchase of farming land

Should you wish to discuss further please feel free to contact Andrew Marshall or Janine Orpwood on 5427 8100 for an initial consultation.

The exploration challenge

See you later winter. You gave us snow and warm fires and rain for our tanks but we are done. Spring is in the air and it is time to have some fun out and about in our beautiful Macedon Ranges. We challenge you all to explore what the region has to offer this September. Not just in your own patch though, try heading to another local village to try out something new. Have you ever been to the Kyneton Daffodil Festival, where the whole town hosts a range of fun and quirky events? Have you been to the Riddells Creek Farmers Market for their local, seasonal fresh produce? Did you know Duneira on Mount Macedon is hosting Saray Illuminado in concert while its gardens bloom in a riot of colour? And how long since you have visited Camel’s Hump or Hanging Rock to stretch your legs? Have you and the family done the RomseyLancefield ride along Federation Track? You could start off slowly, browsing the stores and cafes around Woodend and Kyneton or you could book in to a workshop. Don’t forget to check how the locally crafted beer and wine tastes in the springtime (be assured, it tastes REALLY good). Head to the new, world-class visitmacedonranges. com website now to find more events and things to do. Share your photos with the Macedon Ranges Naturally Cool Facebook page and inspire your friends to explore this region that dazzles in spring. Submitted by Helen Relph: 0419 022 922

Spring is here

and we’re ready for more great activities and new projects. We’ve got an exciting new partnership Remy Shpayzer from the Fox in the Chamber. Remy, a professional barista will be teaching 15-25 year olds the art of being a barista and helping them learn new skills ready for a summer job. This program has been generously funded through Kyneton Community and Learning Centre’s LET’s program so we can offer six hours of training for just $60 per person. Science and Art Smarties will be back at the end of the month for the school holidays. Full details and enrolments are on our website woodendnh.org.au If you’re after something new to do, our next brochure will be distributed in the October Woodend Star. In the meantime, you can always join our mailing list or follow us on Facebook and Instagram to keep up-to-date with our news. On Friday, 9 September we’ll be donning a touch of yellow and asking “R U OK?” at our monthly community lunch. This event is a great excuse to knock on a neighbour’s door and invite them along for lunch. You’re welcome to linger over a coffee and a homemade macadamia brownie and join our weekly ‘Unlock your Technology” session at 2pm. Three techsperts from year 9 at Braemar will be on hand to answer your computer, phone or tablet questions.

As you may have seen in the July press, we are extremely grateful to Macedon Ranges Shire Council for overturning their decision to cut our funding. Community letters of support and submissions contributed significantly to this change in decision – for that we are extremely thankful. Our other piece of good news is that we were successful in our application for a community grant to reconfigure our reception area to accommodate two volunteers at a time. We are very grateful to Rilla Healey from Small Studio in Woodend for her architectural advice and drawing up our plans, to Brad Else at Evolve Interiors in Kyneton for building our new desk and cupboards and to Nicole Janett, Interior Designer, for her expertise helping us choose paint colours. During the September school holidays (16-30 Sept) the committee, volunteers and staff will work together to transform the space ready for the start term. It’s exciting times at the House! Jennifer Anderson 4 West Ward For those of you who don’t know me, I am a resident of Woodend who works part time as a General Practitioner and at The Royal Children’s Hospital. I have been a Macedon Ranges Councillor for the past four years, including one year as Mayor, and have decided to run again in the elections for Council this October. I love where I live and wish to ensure the Macedon Ranges remains a place as beautiful as it is today, to be enjoyed and cherished by current and future generations. Each decision council makes impacts on subsequent decisions and it is important to get the balance of population, community health and wellbeing, jobs, agriculture, natural landscapes and protecting the environment right. It is also important that each point of view is listened to and respected. If I am re-elected, I hope to continue to improve collaboration and communication with the community, Councillors and Council staff to achieve this balance together. Telephone, email or arrange a time to chat so we can understand each other’s thoughts about the future of the Macedon Ranges, together. 0417 112 582 | jennifer4westward@gmail.com The New Woodend Star / September 2016

Help for shy poets

If you'd like your poem to be performed at the monthly Chamber Poets session, actor John Flaus can help: each month he reads aloud poetry written by those who don't feel ready to stand in front of a microphone themselves. We welcome all poets, young and old, experienced and beginners. Our next session is 3-5 pm at the Chamber cafe on Saturday 10 September. Everyone is welcome to come along and be entertained! VALE – Margaret Robinson

28th February 1921 – 29th July 2016.

It is with great sadness that we farewell a truly wonderful lady. Elegant, beautifully spoken, kind and compassionate: Margaret was greatly respected and adored by all who knew her. Margaret Robinson was a stalwart of many local groups including the Red Cross, Probus, the Heritage Society, the Woodend Walkers, and the volunteers from the Visitor Information Centre. Born in Tasmania in 1921, Margaret’s maiden name was McCoy. She was the eldest of three children, but tragically suffered the loss of her mother when only four years old. Margaret, her two year old sister, and 8 month old brother were sent to Victoria to be raised by their maternal grandmother and great aunt. She grew up around the Toolern Vale area, and said that despite the circumstances it was a happy childhood. She left school at the age of 16 and went to work for the Reserve Bank of Australia on Victoria Parade. She loved this job and stayed there until she married at the age of 37. Her husband Doug was twenty years her senior,

and soon after marrying they moved to a large property on Mahoneys Road, Woodend during the early 1960’s. This property was subdivided after they sold and moved to a newly built house on Old Lancefield Road, in 1968. Tragedy struck again when Doug suffered a stroke and was left fully paralysed for 4 years before passing away in the late 1970s. A physically large man, Margaret was unable to care for him full time at home. He stayed at Ray M Begg in Kyneton where Margaret visited him every single day; regularly taking him home for weekends. Margaret joined the Australian Red Cross in 1960, and just last year received an award for 55 years of service at Government House. She was involved in Emergency Services for many of those years and was one of the first in attendance to set up the Emergency Relief Centre at the Woodend Racecourse on Ash Wednesday in 1983. A Relief Centre that was maintained for two long weeks. She remained active in Red Cross until well into her nineties; assisting with the catering at an open garden at Flint Hill only a couple of years ago. If offered a cup of tea by the local Heritage Society, you will be drinking from one of Margaret’s creations. Her beautiful china painting skills adorn the cups and saucers

of the Society, a legacy of a fundraising campaign bearing the names of all their members. She was also one of the founding members of the Woodend Walkers group in 1977. This group still meets today. Details of their regular adventures were documented by Margaret; with lists of destinations, participants, weather, sites seen and events that occurred on the way. These fascinating snapshots of local life are maintained by the Heritage society. Margaret volunteered at the Visitor Information Centre for 17 years, and was dreadfully disappointed when required to retire at age 90. She was a popular volunteer, with many requests by others to fill shifts accompanying her. She remained a member of Probus, and was still in regular attendance until recently. Margaret lived independently until well into her 90s. She suffered a broken hip five years ago, and spent some time in rehabilitation in Castlemaine before returning to live at home. She had been living at the local Bupa since late 2014. Margaret liked to laugh and tell people she was “the real McCoy” – and she really was. She was one of the loveliest ladies I have ever met, a true lady; in every sense of the word. Written by Marion Coulson on behalf of Woodend Red Cross Photo courtesy of Christine Sullivan.

Film Society hung up on Hitchcock. The Macedon Ranges Film Society's August 10 screening featured the 1948 Alfred Hitchcock classic 'Rope'. 'Rope' was inspired by a 1929 stage play based on a true story; two men who, considering themselves intellectually superior, commit murder by strangling their friend then throwing a party while his body remains hidden in their apartment. The film's drama centres around the intellectual game playing between the murderers played by John Dall and Farley Granger and their former school master played by James Stewart. Hitchcock filmed on a single set with minimal editing – unusual for the time. In September the Society's feature film is 'The Imitation Game' starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The Macedon Ranges Film Society meets monthly on the second Wednesday at Woodend Community Centre. Film notes and an informal supper are part of the evening. MRFS is a membership-based club; initial enquiries by email to mrfilmsociety@gmail.com or call Lorraine 5427 0921 or Christine 5429 5452

Hawks prove to be tough mudders Tough Mudder is on in November and with some of the Masters players considering entering marathon mudfest the game against Samaria at the boggy Swanpool Oval could be seen as a training session for it. The Hawks were pumped for a tough game when the convoy headed to Swanpool to take on the undefeated Suns, little did we know what we were in for. The other new team to the Masters league was apparently unstoppable, so in the lead up to the game the Hawks were priming themselves for a tough game. Training had seen a lot of focus on ball movement and hitting up targets, but this was done on a resurfaced Gilbert Gordon Oval where mud is something on the road now. If we’d swapped our footy boots for gumboots the chances are it would’ve been considered performance enhancing when the ball was bounced… err… the ball was thrown up. The Swanpool ground had not seen a game in years and the warm-up highlighted a saturated paddock that better suited dairy cows. Dairy cows wearing flippers. The game began in mud and went downhill from there, but not before our big streak of pelican shit Doug Sutherland announced his return from injury and kicked the first goal of the game. He was only just warming up.

Hawks vs The Suns

The Suns opened the second quarter with an early goal and it looked like they were going to run away with the game, but the Hawks responded with James ‘Cleanskin’ Overland showing the way with a quick goal after arriving at the ground at the end of first quarter. We’re not sure how, but he remained pretty clean through out the game. Big Tim Chew stepped up and nailed two goals as the Hawks kept Suns scoreless for the rest of the quarter. By half time the ground was a bog and the hosts hot-footed it to the sheds while the Hawks stayed on the ground and soaked up the conditions. The Suns could only manage a touched behind in the third quarter before Dougy slotted his second followed by Jason Van Dam. The ground was well and truly mush and scoring soon became a rarity… for the Suns that is. The ball was slewing off the boot sideways, marks were being spilled, players slipped, slid or got bogged as the hilarity of the day set in. The Hawks ran out 32-point winners against what had been the benchmark team of the competition and there was talk of the Suns having thrown in the towel after halftime. Daniel Edwards threw himself into the game for his best performance for the Hawks to date, joining a lot of unheralded players whose efforts, say coach Ray Tadd, “made a significant contribution to the end result”. While Drew copped another whack to the head for a dose of concussion, credit goes to Anthony “Woody” Woodcock for seeing out the game without any need for ice or a stretcher. Nils ‘Kiwi’ Moojen’s efforts on the bus also came under scrutiny with a late arrival but he backed up with being the leading “piss stop” caller on the way home. He wasn’t bad in the ruck either. Our next game at home is the last for the season. The Hawks take on Kerang on August 28 with the game moved to Buffalo Stadium. WOODEND B WLING CLUB NEWS Season open day – Sunday September 25 The Woodend Bowling Club will officially open the New Season at the Club on Sunday September 25. The new Midweek Pennant Season starts on Saturday October 4 and Saturday Pennant on October 8. All Club Members are welcome, and we extend the invitation to all past members of the Woodend Bowling Club who are most welcome to celebrate the start of the new season. WE ARE 126 YEARS YOUNG There can be few clubs or organisations in the Macedon Ranges that have a longer continuous history than the Woodend Bowling Club. At a well-attended meeting of the ratepayers held on 1st June 1890, it was decided to establish a Bowls and Tennis Club in the town. A committee was appointed to select the most suitable ground and was authorised by the meeting to make an application to the Shire. The location chosen on the south side of the Five Mile Creek, and was unanimously approved at the next meeting. This is the very same location where the Woodend Bowling Club is based today. The original agreement of the lease was to pay the ‘consideration of one shilling paid yearly’. The Club still has an excellent working relationship with the Shire, although the current ‘consideration’ is slightly more. Back in 1890, it was agreed to erect a 4 foot 6 inch picket fence, at a cost, which would not exceed £50. As soon as this was completed the club would spend at least £50 to form the new bowling green, which was officially opened on Christmas Day the same year. The modern game of lawn bowls is more colourful and competitive Lawn bowling in the 21st century is both colourful and competitive, and is no longer the ‘older persons’ game that many people believe. In fact, most of the leading male and female players in the Australian ‘Jackaroos’ teams and in their 20s, 30s and 40s. with some players, like Kyneton’s Chloe Stewart, being chosen successfully in the national team as a teenager. There are also more ‘fun’ versions of the game such as barefoot bowls and Jack Attack, which is the bowling version of cricket’s T20. The Woodend Bowling Club is always looking for new members, young and not-so-young. For further information please call me on 0409 093 935 or email: admin@woodendbowlsclub.com. For barefoot bowls bookings please email: bookings@ woodendbowlsclub.com. And you can follow us on Facebook. Submitted by M Dornau, Woodend Bowling Club Inc.

Your electric gates could slow the CFA down We have noticed that more and more properties in the Woodend area, and Macedon Ranges, are installing electric front gates. Whilst this makes opening and closing gates on rural properties much easier, it can also present a barrier to CFA fire fighters if we are called to an emergency on a property. Under law, the CFA can force our way in if necessary, and any damage is covered by special insurance. However, there are also some properties that have installed ‘serious’ electric gates that are both very large and very strong, and breaking in would be impossible. In such cases we would look at cutting through fences, or some other means, to gain access to the property. One way of giving us access if residents aren’t at home, without causing damage or breaching security, would be to leave a contact phone number clearly visible close to the electronic access point for the gates. We could then make a quick phone call to gain access. This would also assist deliveries and trades people visiting a property. Time to start your pre-summer clean up.

Now that the weather is starting to improve, people are beginning to venture outdoors more often, especially into the garden and other areas on larger properties. So, NOW is the time to start preparing to reduce the risks of fire danger to you, your family and your property. Why you should clean up

The ferocity of a fire depends on a number of factors, including the weather, ground slope and especially the amount of ‘fuel’ on and around your house or property. Fuel is the only factor that you can alter before an unplanned fire starts. Clearing volatile fuels such as grass, undergrowth, fallen leaves, bark, dead branches and twigs will lower the intensity of a fire. For more information please visit the Macedon Ranges Shire website and search for ‘Burning Off’. Please contact Captain Mick Christie on 0419 870 601 or 1st Lieutenant Mike Dornau on 0409 093 935, call the Woodend CFA on 5427 2356, visit the station in Urquhart Street, Like our Facebook Page or visit our website: www.woodendcfa.org.

Woodend’s heritage society upgrades computers thanks to Mortgage Choice Bendigo When Jannyse Williams joined Woodend’s heritage society 20 years ago, searching for information in old newspapers meant using a microfilm reader. It was painstaking work. To find a relevant article, researchers often had to wind through months of editions. Pages whizzed past on the screen. Then, when the correct day had been found, they had to scour headlines to pick out what they wanted. “It would give you a migraine very quickly,” Jannyse said. “You had to read every line.” The society had some computers. But they were so old they didn’t have Microsoft Windows. In those days, data was stored on 3.5in disks, not USB sticks and portable drives. And the internet was in its infancy: access, if you had it, was via a dial-up connection. No broadband, no Wi-Fi. Nowadays, those computers and microfilm readers would themselves be heritage items. As a voluntary organisation, Woodend & District Heritage Society doesn’t update its equipment often. It has to make do, and be on the look-out for secondhand deals. “New” computers – when they do arrive – are already several years old. So the committee leapt at the chance to obtain six computers from Mortgage Choice. The machines came from a call centre but they were not old. Importantly, they were much faster than the society’s existing computers – some of which had been around since the mid-1990s. And their larger 19in screens were much kinder to the eyes. The opportunity arose because Woodend resident Peter Machell, owner of Mortgage Choice Bendigo, knew of the heritage society’s valuable work and spotted a chance to help. “Our region has a rich history, and the Woodend and District Heritage Society’s dedication to compiling and protecting it is amazing,” Peter said. “Whether I read an article, see an old photo or just listen to a local talking of days gone by, I’m fascinated with our past and how it has built the wonderful culture we have in Woodend.” Jannyse, now the society’s President, said the society was able to buy the computers, and 12 screens, for a far better price than it could have obtained them for elsewhere. Members now find it easier to log photographs, rate books, school and church records, club minute books, and births, deaths and marriages. page 30

Local newspapers from the earliest days can now be viewed on a computer rather than a film reader. Searching for articles is no longer the time-consuming task it once was. Tony Stidwell, who manages the collection of photos, said: “The extra screens are much bigger and clearer so we are able to replace the smaller screens that some of our volunteers had problems with.” The additional computers mean volunteers no longer face arriving to find every computer already in use. “They come in and can go straight to their computer and open it and start working,” Jannyse said. “It’s just made life a lot easier for everyone. We are very grateful.” (See picture on back page) Submitted by J Williams
