Club of Woodend

The Rotary Club of Woodend recently held a changeover to celebrate another great year under the leadership of Howard Bradfield and welcome new President for 2015-16 Grant Hocking. The event held at Glen Erin winery was well attended with 67 people enjoying the guitar brilliance of local musician Jimmy O'Hare and the outstanding service offered by Glen Erin. Guests included Rotary District Governor Julie Mason, Assistant Governor David Bourke, MRSC Mayor Jennifer Anderson, Councillor John Connor and representatives from several other Rotary clubs and community groups.

Nationals Leader visits Woodend Woodend Neighbourhood House hosted a visit from the Honourable Peter Walsh MP on Monday 20 July. Peter arrived just in time for an afternoon tea of home-baked scones thanks to our committee member Terrie and met with 10 people all connected to Woodend community life Leader of The Nationals Peter Walsh said it was fantastic to meet with some of the volunteers, committee members and users of the Woodend Neighbourhood House and get a first-hand look at the programs delivered. “Neighbourhood Houses play such an important role, particularly in rural and regional communities,” Mr Walsh said. “They bring communities together, not only helping locals to gain some new skills but also creating lasting networks and friendships. “Thanks to Jill Scanlon and everyone who attended for the delicious scones we enjoyed with a cuppa, and a chat.” As part of the visit Mr Walsh asked everyone to imagine that they were ‘Premier for a Day’ and to come up with their one policy that they would immediately implement. Mr Walsh took away some great ideas about how he and his party could continue to serve their communities and heard their thoughts on the need for bipartisanship to be seen more in the work of governments and oppositions. Jill Scanlon said, “A real rural perspective came through, with participants wanting to see better pathways for communities to support each other, develop strong links across their communities and secure the future of renewable energy resources to assist their communities to stay viable.” The Loddon Murray Community Leadership Program (LMCLP) had a hand in drawing Mr Walsh to the House.

What do you think of when you hear the word Rotary? To a lot of people it brings forward images of community and international projects aimed at improving the lives of people all over the world. Locally, you may know Rotary through its more visible work in the community. To many it would bring forth images of older professional gentlemen in suits, no women members and boring speeches, however at the Rotary club of Woodend and indeed in Rotary clubs around Australia we can smash this misconception. As the oldest service organisation in the world there are many experienced members continuing to do great work but Rotary is diverse in so many ways with clubs operating independently as incorporated entities. Rotary has a twenty-eight year history in Woodend and currently has twenty members from various backgrounds including seven female members. The youngest member is aged 33 and all of us joined Rotary to give something back to the local community and to communities around the world. Meetings are fun and include opportunity for social interaction and to hear from interesting speakers and visits to fascinating locations. Woodend Rotary has initiated and supported many activities over its proud twenty-eight year history and recent projects have included. • Youth leadership and development • Woodend Community Halloween party • Woodend Primary School solar panel project • Woodend SES, CFA, Landcare, Heritage society and Men’s Shed • RSL – Australia Day event march and lunch

Very Special Kids

Woodend Rotary Luncheon

Glen Osmond Farm What has been happening at Very Special Kids Glen Osmond Farm? Well, simply, everything that we had hoped for. We have just heard that the cottages are now fully booked until the end of this year, and in spite of the recent extremely cold weather, feedback from the families who stay at the farm continues to be overwhelming. We read about just how much this time away means to them from their comments in the Visitor’s books but the other day a thank you card with this message also appeared in our letter box. I’m sure you will find it just as moving as we did; Mathew and I could not leave there, a place he has appropriately named ‘heaven on earth’ without letting you know how much we have appreciated and valued out time here.Your vision of this sanctuary began on a few years after our first crossing paths with Very Special Kids. What this incredible organisation has done for our family over many different and challenging years is beyond belief and I do not know how we would have survived as a family without their ongoing support. We have been blessed in that Mathew has been given a quality of life beyond anything we were told to expect and as a result we have created what we hope would be a lifetime of memories. The bonus is we have him to share them with.

Save the date The Rotary Club of Woodend will be holding another of its popular fundraising luncheons on Sunday August 30. The luncheon will be held at the Woodend Bowls Club from 12.30–3pm. The event has been held for the past 7 years raising funds for various community projects and this time the funds raised will be donated to Macedon Ranges Shire Council Youth Programs. Thanks to the wonderful support received from local businesses from right across the Macedon Ranges and beyond who donate auction and raffle prizes and the generosity of those who attend, we hope to make a sizeable donation to MRSC Youth programs. The entry fee of $25 allows everyone who attends to enjoy champagne and the savory and sweet treats on offer. Over the years these luncheons have attracted a dedicated group of supporters. It is hoped the community will again turn out to support this event and ultimately the Macedon Ranges Youth programs. More information on MRSC Youth programs will be provided at the luncheon. This has now become an annual event and we would like to invite you to be a part of it in 2015. All luncheons attract good attendance and it is preferred that people book a place by contacting Melissa Hocking on 5427 1578. Submitted by G. Hocking

Glen Osmond farm Our visit here is another of those perfect moments and Mathew said he thinks this is what heaven would look like. Glen Osmond is magical and every breath of air I’ve taken since being here has filled me with an incredible sense of calm. The sun rising and setting each day allows you the appreciation that life is precious and a gift that we must enjoy and not take for granted. Our lives become so busy caring for a Very Special child and sometimes we forget to really live it and love it. Your beautiful dream of building this magical place has allowed us to do that – live, laugh and love. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Alex and Mathew Gaythorpe. XOX.

The barn at Glen Osmond Farm is a much loved play area for Very Special Kids families.

The serenity of the farm with its stunning views across to Mount Macedon is something that is constantly mentioned. In addition to the families who are able to bring their special child with them, for those who have recently lost a child it is this peacefulness, which they say helps them so much. For the siblings in these bereaved families who have shared the stressful and uncertain years with their parents, it is just a wonderful place to visit with new experiences and new places to explore. The unique barn with all its activities, the Woodend Children’s Park and trips to Hanging Rock and places like Daylesford and further afield in addition to kite flying, watching the kangaroos and feeding the Edgar’s Mission sheep, all add up to a memorable time. Yes, this is what we had hoped for and again we thank all those in the community who provide ongoing support. Submitted by J. Hawkins

Local businesses have the opportunity to be inspired by guest speakers at the region’s very first Regional Networking Evening next month, including presentations on how to network, expand markets and make broader business connections. The evening is being hosted by Macedon Ranges Shire Council on Tuesday 4 August from 6.30pm-10.30pm at the Royal George Hotel in Kyneton, and will include facilitated networking activities and an inspiring presentation from a local business owner. Guest facilitator and comedian, Trent McCarthy, will then take attendees on a journey of engaging and entertaining networking activities to encourage people to circulate the room and make new connections –the ultimate aim of the evening. Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson, said that networking and building relationships can often be the key to success and it’s an important strategy to have as part of your business plan.“The aim of Council’s Economic Development Strategy is to support business growth and development. The annual business training calendar is one of many Council initiatives that support the growth of employment opportunities in our region,” she said. The cost to attend is $35 and includes finger food (drinks can be purchased), however for the first 20 bookings, Council is offering a special deal of two tickets for the price of one – a great incentive to bring a colleague along. For more information contact Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Department on 5421 9616 or via ecodevadmin@mrsc.vic.gov.au. Submitted by G. Gamble for M.R.S.C.

Kyneton Antique & Vintage Fair

Friday 4 September to Sunday 6 September 5:00pm to 4:00pm at Kyneton Town Hall This annual event features dealers from across Victoria and items for sale range from clothing, costume jewellery, furniture, glass/chinaware to one-offs and accessories and much more. “Often imitated, never duplicated”… The original Kyneton Antique Fair started 19 years ago. It is amazing how the show has grown, how styles, dealers and customers have come and gone, yet it remains lively and fresh year after year. This has been accomplished by blending youthful and seasoned veteran vendors with newer vintage vendors - all with great quality merchandise brought to the marketplace. The Kyneton Antique & Vintage Fair is the major fundraiser for the Friends of the Kyneton Museum and all funds raised assist in the conservation of items as well as development of projects at the beautiful Kyneton Museum in historic Piper Street. Lunch will be available, including baked goods and home-made soup, in the Kyneton Rotary Club country kitchen in the Richardson Room in the Kyneton Town Hall. From M.R.S.C.

Proposed Commercial Rezoning in Woodend Macedon Ranges Shire Council is proposing to rezone the land bound by Urquhart Street, Brooke Street and Templeton Street from the General Residential Zone to the Commercial 1 Zone (see map below). The purpose of the rezoning is to ensure Woodend has sufficient commercial zoned land to meet the needs of the community for the next 15 years. The rezoning is an action in the Woodend Structure Plan adopted by Council in 2014. The amendment (C107) will be on public exhibition from 9 August to 10 September 2015. For more information and to have your say, visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/ yoursay.

Proposed Woodend commercial rezoning

a messaage

from the Mayor

Hi all, just a quick update this month. By now council should have endorsed the conversion of the Woodend Town Structure Plan into a planning scheme amendment. This is where what you have asked to be accomplished will become embodied in the planning scheme; to become a solid foundation upon which council makes decisions, about what planning permits are suitable for Woodend, and which are not. It still has a long way to go until adoption and institution and I encourage you to keep a look out in the local media and Shire Life for further updates on its progress. Once council has endorsed the draft amendment we ask the Minister for Planning to accept it. If the Minister does accept it, it is put out for public consultation for a minimum of 4 weeks. Council plans to exhibit it for longer than is required by state law, in order to present the best opportunity for people to provide feedback. I know you may feel that you have already made your views known by contributing to the Structure Plan, but this is the next very important phase, and we need to know if you support the proposed changes to the Planning Scheme, which have resulted from council’s interpretation of what was produced in the Structure Plan. Do not hesitate to call council strategic planning staff or myself if you need any assistance with these issues.

Kind regards, Jennifer

Woodend town structure plan – amendment process

In the coming months, Macedon Ranges Shire Council will release a proposed amendment that will implement the Woodend Structure Plan into the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme. The structure plan aims to manage future development and protect key features of the town through to the year 2036, setting out how the township will grow to accommodate a projected population of 5,000 people. The plan was prepared in 2013 with extensive community input. This next stage of work will engage the community in the formal planning scheme amendment process. Once the planning scheme amendment documents are finalised in draft and adopted by Council for release, letters will be sent to all residents and a full community consultation program will be undertaken. All documents will be made available to the public for discussion and comment. For updates on the project, visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/ woodend-structure-plan. If you have any queries please call 5422 0333 or email mrsc@mrsc.vic.gov.au. Submitted by G. Gamble for M.R.S.C.

What makes a great garden? ‘It’s the X factor,’ ASFAS member Christine Reid, a journalist with a passion for gardens, told her ADFAS audience at the Conservatory at Peppers, Hepburn Springs on 29 June. ‘It’s the atmosphere that makes a garden exciting. It comes from the love that people bring to their gardens,’ she said, with a special reference to guests Barry and Ruth Murphy’s garden, ‘Rosebery Hill’ at Pipers Creek. ‘You go away knowing that you’ve seen something that’s been loved.’

The ‘Eat’n’Speak’ event was followed on 16 July, by a presentation from European art historian Dr Alexey Makhrov, on ‘Summer Palaces of the Tsars’. This fascinating insight into the world of the royal estates of St Petersburg left many in the audience wanting to plan a Russian arts tour as soon as possible. Coming up in ADFAS Dr Sophie Oosterwijk is an expert in art history and English literature, who is currently lecturing at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Dr Oosterwijk will address ADFAS on 13 August on ‘Reflection and Illusion: The Art of Jan van Eyck and his Contemporaries’. She says that we ‘may expect to be dazzled by van Eyck’s virtuosity in oil paint’. Her lecture will focus on the illusion of realism in the art of Jan van Eyck and his contemporaries. Join us on Thursday August 13 at Kyneton Town Hall, 7 for 7.30pm. A delicious supper is served afterwards with local wine.Cost: $30 (at the door) single lecture or inquire about a half-yearly membership. Young artists lead the way

Students write and present “Power Chords” the musical Senior Braemar College students have taken the reins in the College's musical, Power Chords, to be performed in Braemar's Heyward Hall next month. The script was written and developed by a group of students last year and includes two original musical pieces. Rehearsals are currently in full swing with Year 11 and 12 students taking charge of the choreography, musical direction, vocal coaching, and assistant directing. Students have also taken responsibility for the costumes, lighting and set design, and they have taken active roles in the administration, publicity and stage management. Power Chords is a contemporary Rock Opera that tells the story of a not so talented band who begin performing in their garage and go on a journey of exploration guided by a number of gurus specialising in different genres, in the hopes of finding their sound so they can compete in the Battle of the Bands. An evil girl band threatens to jeopardise their chances, and by the end of the competition, it is clear that there can be only one winner. Braemar College Principal, Mr Russell Deer says, "We are very proud of the way students have taken on these leadership roles and worked together to ensure the success of this large scale production. Collaborating on our College Musical has given students the opportunity to explore their creativity, challenge their artistic boundaries and develop valuable team building skills.” Power Chords performance dates are Friday 14 August at 7.30pm, Saturday 15 August at 7.30pm and Sunday 16 August at 2pm. For enquiries, contact the College or see the College blog for more information.

Macedon Ranges residents, landowners, businesses and community groups are being called upon to share ideas about how Council and the community can work together for better environmental outcomes. A range of community views are sought across the shire, to guide the development of a strategy that will set out environmentally sustainable and responsible actions for the future of the region.“This is key strategic document for our region and our local communities, and it’s important that it has a shared vision and ownership from both Council and the community,” said Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson. “If you live, run a business or own land in the Macedon Ranges, this strategy will impact you and we want to hear from you. “Your input will guide our decision-making and activities aimed at reducing adverse impacts on our unique environment,” she said. The strategy is a key commitment for Council in its fouryear Council Plan. It will look at both shared actions with the community as well as actions from Council’s own services and operations, and the way Council works with the community and other organisations. A survey and background information will be released from Monday 28 July at mrsc.vic.gov.au/yoursay and in Council service centres. Drop-in sessions will be held throughout August for those who wish to discuss their ideas with Council representatives in an informal setting. For session times and locations, visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/yoursay The survey, which closes on Friday 11 September, asks people to share their values and concerns about climate change, biodiversity, land and water management. Mayor, Cr Anderson said community input and ownership of the yet to be named strategy was vital to its ongoing implementation. “We want the community to feel a strong sense of ownership for this strategy, which is why we’ve decided to invite the community to come up with a name – once the document reaches draft exhibition stage,” she said. The draft strategy will be released for community comment in early 2016. More information can be obtained by contacting Silvana on 5421 9659 or spredebon@mrsc.vic. gov.au. Woodend cafes embrace Choose Tap program

When you consider that a thousand litres of water from the tap typically costs less than $2, drinking tap water really is the best choice for your health, the environment and your hip pocket. For this reason, Western Water has developed an exciting new hospitality partnership program with cafes and restaurants across our service region as part of our Choose Tap campaign. General Manager of Customer and Community Relations Graham Holt said he’s been delighted with the support Western Water has received for the Choose Tap program. “Eleven Woodend cafes, out of a total of 50 who have so far joined the program, have agreed to provide and promote tap water in their premises. This is a fantastic response.” Mr Holt said Woodend had the highest number of Choose Tap cafes in the Western Water service area. We’re delighted 11 businesses have come on board. They are: Il Caffe, The Chamber, Schatzi’s, Pabulous Café, Café Colenso, Maloa House, Woodend Bakery Café, Vespas, Andrew’s Café, Top Shop and Black Anther Gallery. “Next time Woodend residents are in one of these cafes, look out for the Choose Tap sign, the glass bottles on the table as well as other information about why you should choose tap.” Mr Holt said the program was open to any hospitality business in the region and plans were also underway to expand the program into all local businesses to encourage workers to drink more tap water during the day. If you would like to become a Choose Tap hospitality partner or find out more about the program please call 1300 650 422. Submitted by N. Cooper for Western Water

Guest Speaker at AGM

Landcare Week

5–12 September Plant giveaways, a free public talk on native plants and a community planting are highlights of Landcare week this year. Visit our stall at the Woodend Farmer’s Market on Saturday 5 September, where we’ll be giving away 500 iconic Black Gums. The only known natural occurrence of this endangered species is within 4km of Woodend and they are recognised as a valuable part of the Macedon Ranges’ unique natural environment. The species’ very limited geographic range makes it highly vulnerable to further loss and we aim to double the number of Black Gums on private properties to support Landcare plantings on public land. If you come at 11:00 to collect your Black Gum, you can also hear a free talk by local ecologist Bianca Aquilina on how to create a garden that is rich in habitat and more water-efficient by planting species that are native to the area. Bianca will introduce us to some of the common and unique native plants of Woodend. Take part in a community planting near the Children’s Park on Saturday 12 September. After extensive weed removal, we’re ready to plant a mixture of native grasses, strappy plants, shrubs and trees in two areas on a bend in Five Mile Creek. For information visit our website at woodendlandcare. wordpress.com, see our window outside Coles, send an email to woodendlandcare@gmail.com or call 5427 2312.

Newham and District Landcare Group invite you to their AGM on Friday August 7, in the Newham Hall. Our guest speaker is Gerry Gill, an anthropologist and film maker who has made regional landscape the focus of his research and films. He lectured in Sociology and Anthropology at La Trobe University Bendigo for 30 years. Gerry is interested in the layers of stories that are as much part of the landscape as the rocks, hills and creeks. In his talk at Newham, Gerry will discuss the Aboriginal occupation of the area north of Terrawait (Mt Macedon), what the landscape looked like when Europeans first saw it and the conflicts between invading Europeans and Aborigines on the pastoral frontier. Does rethinking our landscape and colonial history help us think about our own contemporary situation in which we confront climate change? 7pm for drinks and nibbles, 7.30 AGM, 7.45 speaker presentation. Free supper to follow. RSVP Penny Roberts penroberts@bigpond.com or 0418 396 837. Submitted by H. Scott

August 2015 Cost of health care

BSMC fees

Today Medicare rebates do not cover the full cost of providing you with medical care. This is because the rate at which successive governments have indexed the Medicare Schedule fees has been substantially lower than increases in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and average weekly earnings.

Your out of pocket fees, for a single service on a Monday – Friday are as follows:

The reality is that Medicare rebates do not cover the cost of providing you with a safe and high quality service. The fees charged by this practice have to cover all of our practice costs including employing receptionists, practice nurses & allied health professionals, and meeting our operating expenses such as rent, medical equipment, electricity, computers and insurance. Unlike the Medicare rebate, these costs increase, year on year. Medicare rebates (which have lagged behind the CPI for years) have been frozen since 1 July 2014 and will not be increased until 1 July 2018. The Medicare rebate freeze means that this practice is no longer able to routinely bulk bill our patients. From 13th July 2015, our practice will be charging according to the fee schedule opposite. If you have extenuating circumstances please discuss these with your treating GP / health professional.

If you wish to let the Government know that the Medicare rebate is insufficient to assist you in meeting the cost of your medical care, please contact your local Member of Parliament at http://www.aph.gov.au/Senators_and_Members/ Members and/or the Minister for Health: The Hon Sussan Ley MP Minister for Health Parliament House CANBERRA ACT 2600 Tel: (02) 6277 7220 Email: sussan.ley.mp@aph.gov.au Brooke St. Medical Centre – tel. Dance the night away

The Kyneton and District Old Time Dance Club Inc. currently has about fifty members and is keen to promote dancing as an enjoyably activity. The local Kyneton and District Dance Club runs most Tuesdays nights starting at 7.15pm in the local St Mary's Hall. This involves both dance tuition and practice of dances done around the district. Once a month at 8 pm on the 3rd Friday of the month, we conduct an evening dance catering for a range of dancing abilities with an excellent country supper being provided. In both cases the general public is most welcome to attend at minimal cost. Please contact John on 0419 535 143 or by email johncode1944@gmail.com or alternatively look at our website using google. Use Duneira Open Garden as a fundraising opportunity!

Duneira’s heritage garden, at the top of Mount Macedon, is a favourite place for locals and visitors to explore in spring, especially with the famous bluebell display under the Dutch Elm drive.

For the first time Duneira is offering community groups from the Macedon Ranges region the opportunity to utilise the existing Open Garden program for the benefit of their organisation, starting this spring! An Expression of Interest form needs to be completed, and groups must comply with some basic volunteer and insurance requirements. Open the Duneira garden to the public during the weekend and use the proceeds for the benefit of your organisation. For more information and an information pack, please call during office hours 9am–3pm Monday to Thursday. Alternatively, email admin@duneira.com.au for more information. Hanging Rock Review

Tourism operators urged to participate The Victorian Government describes Hanging Rock Reserve as “one of Victoria’s most iconic tourist destinations”. Tourism Macedon Ranges (TMR) agrees and is preparing to be closely involved with consultations as part of the review of the management of Hanging Rock Reserve being undertaken by the Victorian Government. TMR is seeking feedback from tourism operators in the Macedon Ranges about their priorities for Hanging Rock. “It is such an important and beautiful natural feature of our shire and it also contributes a large amount to our local economy and employment,” says Helen Relph, Chair of Tourism Macedon Ranges. “I urge tourism operators to contact me to discuss how TMR will contribute to the review.” TMR is also encouraging tourism operators in the Macedon Ranges to contact the consultants, PPB Advisory, directly for more information about how they can be a part of the consultation process. Please contact Catherine at PPB Advisory on 03 9269 4206. Mary-Anne Thomas, the Labor Member for Macedon, has said, “We want to hear from members of the community and key stakeholders about their concerns and their vision for the future of our area.” The information received from the community through the Hanging Rock review will be used to develop a range of options that provide for sustainable long term management of Hanging Rock and take into account the diverse range of interests in the area. A chilly Woodend night for a mother's plight

Woodenders were warmed and cheered by a performance by Dame Judi Dench at the July meeting of the Macedon Ranges Film Society, when the 2013 film Philomena Lee was shown. Judi Dench comes to the screen with equal amounts of gravitas and humour as she navigates her way through a difficult subject - finding the child she had when a teenager and who was given up for adoption. In August, a lighter touch is expected with a Ken Loach film, The Angel's Share. Members will be entertained by this Scottish comedy-drama which tells the story of a young Glaswegian father determined to set his life on the straight and narrow after a brush with the law. This touching film won the third most-prestigious prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 - the Jury prize.

New Business Networking Group

Local businesses are banding together to form a business networking group with a difference, they have registered the group as “Macedon Ranges Business Networking Group”. Dean Kennedy of Kennedys Accountants and Leigh Tomkinson of Macedon Essential Business Services are launching the group with a free information session at 7:30am on Tuesday 18th August 2015 at the Banquet Room, Baringo 293 Station Rd New Gisborne. Leigh said the feedback and interest in the idea so far from local business has been very promising. Dean commented that there are some great networking groups run around the area but the point of difference of MRBNG is that the group will be run by local business owners and the group works by using the best form of advertising for most businesses – word of mouth. Leigh said that at the first meeting we will provide an introduction to the way the group will work and business owners will have an opportunity to talk about their business and start to establish networks. We are predicting like in Melbourne that those businesses who attend the meeting and realise that becoming part of this group can help their business will join up on the day as there is only one spot for each type of business profession or trade. There will be a small monthly membership fee to cover costs as the group moves forward but not a hefty fee like that of similar groups in Melbourne. Business owners can register to attend the free information session at www.mrbng.eventbrite.com.au we are also encouraging them to bring along approximately 30 business cards, as the cards will be circulated through the group. 0438 440 986 Infectious Diseases: Tuberculosis (Consumption) At this time of year when many of us have elected to have a "flu shot" it is timely to reflect on the infectious diseases of the past. Many of the older residents of the district will remember having to have X-rays for TB at the mobile van that used to move from street to street, in an effort to make early diagnosis of this deadly disease. Those affected were quickly sent off to one of the many sanatoriums, usually situated in cooler hilly country such as the one at Mt Macedon, where the regime was extreme rest and cold air. The photo shows a typical sanatorium ward where patient activity was carefully monitored and controlled throughout the day. Although they were widespread throughout the world, sanatoriums only accommodated a small fraction of TB victims. Not wanting to register deaths, the hospitals often did not accept people with more advanced disease, and because of the cost of sanatorium care, many poor patients were left to die at home with their families. In the final analysis, the death rate in sanatoriums or at home were the same – about half of patients died whether they were treated in a sanatorium or not treated at home. The big advantage was that sanatoriums did remove infected people from the general population thus cutting down on the rate of infection. Thankfully a vaccine was developed for tuberculosis (known earlier as consumption) and used throughout Australia. Once antibiotics were discovered that provided a real cure for TB for the first time, sanatoriums declined and closed rapidly. In 1948, a remarkable campaign to control tuberculosis with sponsorship by UNICEF and the Danish Red Cross was undertaken. The program was, in fact, the first disease control program undertaken by an agency of the World Health Organization. Due to the almost complete eradication of TB in Australia, the vaccine is seldom administered now unless a person is travelling to a country where TB is prevalent. Before that, notices such as those below were common: • Kyneton Guardian 28 Sep 1887 Funeral of Mr. Walter Davies, son of late Mr. Davies who built Springfield Hotel and also nephew of Mrs. Joseph Davies of Red Hill Farm, Dalhousie. Suffered from consumption and had been a paying patient at Kyneton Hospital. • Woodend Star December 3, 1898 p2, Death Notice - Mrs. Egan, relict of the late James Egan of Woodend North, her son Patrick Egan died of consumption at Kyneton. • Woodend Star July 19, 1902, p4: A long letter from the Board of Public Health re. the ‘Great white plague' - Consumption.
