Countdown is on to 10th anniversary Festival

Opening with a bang on 6 June! The 10th anniversary Woodend Winter Arts Festival will open with a bang – with free fireworks at Buffalo Stadium, accompanied by Wadaikorindo Japanese drummers who could well be just as noisy! Opening night will feature the first performance of the much anticipated glamour event of the Festival this year – the Australian premiere of the first extant opera, Jacobo Peri’s Euridice of 1600. This opera is priced for the people – and a great chance for those who have never experienced the opera, including younger audiences, to see it up close. No less than 10 opera singers will perform the opera, created by Festival president and music archaeologist, John O’Donnell, who invested more than 100 hours on the work. It will be performed accompanied by Accademia Arcadia and featuring violinists Davide Monti (returning due to popular demand from Italy) and Lucinda Moon, Laura Vaughan playing the viola da gamba, baroque harpists Maria Christina Cleary and Hannah Lane with the Festival Artistic Director Jacqueline Ogeil on the

harpsichord with John on the organ. Euridice stars Jacqueline Porter as elebrating 10 ears of creativit Euridice. Jacqueline is the Festival’s in the Maceon ane in the Macedon ane program ‘cover girl’ (pictured) and she is joined by Robert Macfarlane as Orfeo with Jennifer Cook, Christopher Roache, Daniel Thomson, Matthew Thomson, Helen Gagliano, Jerzy Kozlowski, Michelle Clark and Michael Strasser. Euridice tells the story of the newlywed Eurydice’s death by snakebite and of her husband Orpheus’s voyage to Hades to plead for her return. It has a number of variants. All involve the power of music, but not all achieve the happy ending. Rodney Hall, engaged to direct the performance, describes his stage production as “elegant, stylised and timeless” with sculptural costumes and formal movement. Green Room Award nominee Peter Mumford will design the set, costumes by brilliant young designer Michael Mumford and Russian trained 6–9 June 2014 Olga Makeeva. The production promises woodendwinterartsfestival.org.au 1 to have a touch of magic and mystery. A fabulous opportunity for those who have Free program: never been to an opera. Woodend Kindergarten trivia

Woodend Kindergarten will host a trivia night at the Norma Richardson Hall on Saturday June 14th. With the soccer World Cup on at the same time, the theme for the evening will reflect the colour and spirit of the host country, Brazil. There will also be a raffle and a silent auction, with some great items up for grabs. Among them is a day with Gai Waterhouse at her Sydney stables and a year’s membership and guest pass to Moonee Valley racecourse. The money raised will help to buy a shade-sail for the sandpit, which has been without cover since a beautiful elm tree had to be removed earlier this year. “We wanted to celebrate the fact that Australia will be playing in the World Cup,“ said kindergarten president Mark Constable, “but we didn’t want the evening to be dominated by soccer. Using Brazil as the inspiration for our theme seemed like the perfect solution. “The quiz will be professionally hosted and there will be plenty for everyone to enjoy. It promises to be a fantastic evening.“ The elm tree stood in the kindergarten’s grounds for 30 years and would have been a familiar sight to generations of children. Sadly, though, its trunk split in high winds in February and it had to be chopped down. “We really miss its wonderful green, cool presence and the huge amount of shade it provided for everyone on hot, and wet, days,“ said teacher Stephanie Goss. The Norma Richardson Hall, in Buckland St, has room for 80 people, so there will be eight teams of 10. The event starts at 7pm. There will be a bar, but guests are asked to bring their own supper. Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased by e-mailing woodendkinder@gmail.com. Submitted by Richard Padgett

Spokes of Hope

Did you know one in 12 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer and that it is the second largest cause of cancer deaths in this country? With this in mind the Spokes of Hope riders put their complaints of “my bum hurts“ into perspective as they began training in earnest for the Ride to Conquer Cancer, a 200km ride to raise funds for cancer research. One of our riders, Andrew Wilson-Annan (whose wife Julie has been diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer) said “no matter how much my bum hurts during training, or on the ride itself, it’s nothing compared to the challenges faced by Julie and I’m proud to provide some support for Peter Mac.“

Keep an eye out for the orange jerseys … rain, hail or shine. The team has grown to 13 riders, who have all been affected in some way by cancer. Each rider must raise at least $2500. That’s $32,500 from a small team from Woodend. Spokes of Hope’s previous effort was $25,000 by just five riders! Over the coming weeks and months, before the big ride in October, we’ll be holding some fundraising events around town. We also have tins around local cafes and businesses where you can donate. Follow us on Facebook on our page Woodend Spokes of Hope. For those wishing to donate online, and to obtain a tax receipt, please go to www.conquercancer.org.au and search for Spokes of Hope under the “Donate“ tab. For more information about the team contact Shevaun Noonan on 0402 211 344 or email shevaunnoonan@hotmail. com. We’ve been overwhelmed by support from local businesses and we’d like to thank the following: Il Caffe, Bradley’s Curtains and Blinds, Woodend Produce Store, Mitre 10, Woodend Cycles, Woodend Automotive, Natural Grace and Australian School of Applied Management. There were many strong individual performances on the day, and a number of students have been invited to attend a second selection trial for the State team that last year contained several Braemar students, and was victorious at the National Championships for the first time in many years. According to Principal, Mr Russell Deer, “Braemar College has a long tradition of orienteering success, and a number of our students have gone on to compete at state, national and international levels.“ Braemar College is an independent, coeducational, ecumenical day school, located amongst a unique and tranquil Mount Macedon bushland setting on the outskirts of Woodend. The Winter Session:

The Wonder of Wicking Beds The Woodend Community Permaculture Garden presents The Winter Session: The Wonder of Wicking Beds, on Saturday the 7th of June from 9.30 to 11.30am. Wicking Beds are self-contained raised beds with built-in reservoirs that supply water from the bottom up – making them self-watering and incredibly efficient. This session will be a ‘hands-on’ workshop as we demonstrate the creation of a wicking bed. We’ll be inserting the liner, creating the water reserve, installing the plumbing, and filling the bed with soil. Come along with your gardening gloves and take part so you can learn how to do it yourself at home.

Woodend Art Group Woodend comes alive over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend, and the members of WAG join in the fun. In our beautiful historic gallery in the railway station building the fire burns brightly, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and home baked cake offers visitors a warm welcome. Not to forget, of course, the beautiful array of art works adorning our walls. This show is one of our main shows for the year, and members have been working tirelessly preparing paintings, prints (from our own printing press), wood work, jewellery and art cards to name a few items on sale. Both framed and unframed paintings will be available for you to purchase. A gold coin donation is asked for entry, this gives you a ticket into the raffle, tea and coffee and our warm hospitality. Further information is available on the WAG web site www.woodendartgroup.org.au Submitted by Margaret Watkins

Running alongside the workshop, will be the Macedon Ranges Home Produce Exchange. Kicking off at 10am, we swap home grown fruit, vegetables, herbs, preserves, seedlings, seeds, eggs, manure, baked goods and lots of great tips and inspiration. Come and join in on the fun! These free events are held in the Woodend Community Permaculture Garden right next door to the farmers market. Morning Tea is provided by gold coin donation. Kaleido Discs

The Macedon Ranges Arts Collective will once again be in residence at The Woodend Neighbourhood House, Forest St, Woodend during the Woodend Winter Arts Festival over the June long weekend. This year the Collective will be holding a fun, handson activity aimed at engaging children young and old in the wonderful world of colour in art. We are creating an Artist-led sculptural piece called Kaleido Discs or, as it is becoming affectionately known, the KD Project. The KD Project will be installed in a public space in the Macedon Ranges after the festival, but we need to help to create the components. Thanks to the generosity and sponsorship of the Bendigo Bank this is a free activity and no bookings are required as it will run from 10am–4pm over the three days of the Festival. As well as the KD Project, the Collective will be presenting a terrific display of works by members. Several Artists will be at hand to answer your questions and will be doing demonstrations in their preferred media, presenting a vibrant and stimulating exhibition. There will be woodwork, paintings, photography, art jewellery, glass, ceramics, mosaics, metal clay, fibre art, textiles and much more for sale, and there will also be pop-up make and take sessions. The home of the Collective, The Gallery on Mt Macedon Road (behind the Trading Post) will also be open from 10am–4pm across the long weekend. The Woodend Winter Arts Festival runs from the 7th – 9th June 2014. Submitted by Lara Le Reveur

Rock ‘n’ roll royalty the Eagles

Set to perform at the Rock International band, the Eagles, have announced that they will perform at Hanging Rock in February 2015 as part of their ‘History of the Eagles’ Australian/New Zealand tour organised by Frontier Touring.

Legendary band the Eagles will play at Hanging Rock

Macedon Ranges Shire Council Mayor, Roger Jukes, said he is looking forward to welcoming international rock ‘n’ roll royalty to the Macedon Ranges. “The Eagles have been busy touring across Europe and the US so we are very excited to know that they will be coming to our very own Hanging Rock,“ he said. The Eagles will follow in the footsteps of other international acts Leonard Cohen, Rod Stewart and Bruce Springsteen—who have all performed at the Rock—plus The Rolling Stones, who are set to perform in November this year. “The calibre of these international acts really highlights what a world-class live music venue Hanging Rock has become,“ Cr Jukes said. Each of the previous concerts has been a huge success for the region, especially for accommodation providers and local restaurants, shops and cafes. “The flow-on benefit for the community and businesses after the two Bruce Springsteen concerts was estimated to be in the vicinity of $9.7 million,“ Cr Jukes said. The event will be held at Hanging Rock on Saturday 28 February 2015. To find out when tickets go on sale and see other performance dates included on the tour, visit www. frontiertouring.com/eagles.

It can be hard to know whom you need to contact when you have a question or concern regarding things occurring in the Shire. Cr. Jennifer Anderson, Macedon Ranges Shire Councillor We have systems in place to try to keep a record of all contacts made, either by post, email or telephone, but no system is perfect. The best place to start, in general, is to ring the main desk on 5422 0333 or email mrsc@mrsc.vic.gov.au Front desk staff will ask as many questions as they feel they need to try put you through to the right person. Issues may involve multiple departments, so it may be that you will need to speak to more than one person. The best advise I can give is to make sure you have pen and paper handy when you call in order to write down the time, date and name of person whom you have spoken to. Also write a brief summary of what you were told, and the name of anyone you were advised would be in touch later. It is wise to ask for an approximate time frame, so your expectations are not unrealistic, and you know when to call to follow up if you have not heard back on your matter. This assists us to improve the system, and track where communication errors or misunderstandings may have occurred. You are more than welcome to contact your ward councillors at any time, but it is best to try the main office first, as they are most likely to know who is best served to help you. Member for Macedon out for Blood

June 14th is World Blood Donor Day. If you or one of your loved ones have ever needed blood, you already know how important blood donation is. Blood is something we all expect to be there for us when we need it, yet only one in 30 of us give blood regularly while one in every three people will require a blood transfusion in their lifetime. Stocks of blood”run low this time of year with a dropoff in donor numbers over winter and as many as 1000 blood donors a week cancel or reschedule appointments. This means more donors are needed to roll up their sleeves and donate. Modern techniques mean that a single blood donation can help at least 3 different patients and contribute to making up to 22 different life giving products. Donating only takes about an hour and most people are able to give blood if they: • are fit, healthy and not suffering from a cold, flu or other illness at the time of donation or in the previous seven days • are aged between 16–70 years • weigh more than 45kg Saving lives by donating blood is in our hands. Blood donation is a simple way to make an enormous difference, so call 13 95 96 to find your nearest donation centre. Warm regardsJoanne Duncan MP, Member For Macedon

Woodend Playgroup has had a very busy first half of the year, with its long-awaited bathroom renovations being completed and more families signing up as members. Children have been enjoying the new bathrooms and outdoor play equipment and many of our littlest, new baby members have loved having a roll around on the brand new carpet and playing with our new infant toys. In May MP Amanda Millar and Macedon Ranges Shire Council councilor, John Connor, were invited to morning tea to thank them for their generous support of the renovations and improvements at Playgroup. Bush Playgroup has continued to be a roaring success, with the Macedon Ranges playgroups leading the way in its implementation of its monthly Bush Playgroup activities. Two Woodend Playgroup committee members, Melanie Lloyd and Caitlin Griffith, led a group of about 100 delegates at Playgroup Victoria’s annual conference on the implementation of Bush Playgroup and the benefits to children. In April children enjoyed a fun morning exploring at Black Hill Reserve in Kyneton and in May the children did some wildlife spotting and played some “silly soccer” at Cameron’s picnic ground at Mt Macedon. In other happenings, Woodend Playgroup parents have been busy baking for the local football match supporting local charity Nick’s Wish Foundation in May and soup for those game enough to brave the cold for the Woodend Winter Arts Festival’s firework display on Friday June 6th.. Art is at the Heart

Art is at the heart of the Macedon Ranges. The area’s diverse, ever-changing landscapes and picture book villages continue to compel generation after generation of artists. The place offers inspiration on an accessible human scale. As a result, creativity is everywhere for you to enjoy. There are paintings in cafes, galleries in wineries and huge stone sculptures in gardens. Whether or not art is your thing, it is easy to get drawn in. Browse at the window of a gallery and, chances are, art will become part of the conversation over dinner, then again at breakfast. Local artists love to share too. Drop into an open studio and see their magic in action. Want to see some art for yourself? Drop into one of the many studios or galleries in villages across the region. Where are they you ask? A great way to explore the arts across the Macedon Ranges is to follow the Macedon Ranges art trail. Pick up a brochure at your local Visitor Information Centre, or download a copy at visitmacedonranges.com/arts-culture and design your own artist adventure What about in your home town? Woodend is home to a number of studios and galleries, here are just a few: Ettore Dipilla creates bespoke glass works and conducts classes for adults and children, helping them create unique glass art. Painter Stephanie Goss creates beautiful botanical works, many of which are reproduced into cards and prints, she also conducts workshops. Mary Larnach Jones’ training in a range of arts from trompe l’oeil to icon writing sees her produce works inspired by a range of genres. Or browse in a gallery; it’s excellent coffee, cake and art at The Chamber Art & Coffee House, ever-changing exhibitions at Bakery Lane Gallery, and inspiring art and sculptures in a delightful garden setting at Black Anther. Forty-seven local businesses attend conference

For the first time, businesses in the Macedon Ranges came together to learn about smarter business practices from Small Business Victoria as part of a two day conference held at the Kyneton Town Hall on 20 and 21 May. Macedon Ranges Shire Council partnered with Small

Business Victoria to offer the two-day program, which included multiple sessions on topics such as marketing, social media and finances. Forty-seven individual businesses were represented with the majority booked in to multiple sessions, including the networking night. In total, 141 bookings were made across the two days. Small Business Victoria presenter, Bruce Hall, said that the conference concept was a first for Victoria and will no doubt be replicated across the state. “I’m sure other councils would be keen to run their business events in this format. It’s difficult for regional businesses to access quality professional development. A conference format that is locally based makes this much easier,“ he said. Mayor, Cr Roger Jukes said that attendees had provided positive feedback on the conference, with the majority saying they would like it to be an annual event. “Some of the comments made were that it was an amazing experience. They appreciated the fact that it was both affordable and easily accessible because of its location in Kyneton,“ he said. Conference highlights included the “hands-on“ social media workshops focusing on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Popular Small Business Victoria presenter, Tim Gentle, said that over the two days, he had “shined a flashlight into the digital world.“ “I guided them through the potential, what’s available and how to do it. The participants embraced this new knowledge and understood that they have to keep up, or be left behind. “To demonstrate the diversity of the digital world, we also set up a Google Hangout. Each attendee was filmed introducing themselves and their business, and the video was posted on YouTube,“ said Tim Gentle.

The Leadlighter

Ettore. (Ee-Tore-Ay) If his parents hadn’t immigrated to Australia, Italian-born Ettore probably would have been a farmer or a goat herder in the hills around his birth-town of Pacentro, 80km east of Rome. “I think my father was a farmer. He came to Australia after the war in 1949. He worked on the hydroelectric scheme for four years before Mum, my sister and I came over. I was six and I must have hated the sea voyage because I have a lasting fear of water,“ says Ettore. “I don’t remember much about Italy except being put on the family donkey with grandfather’s lunch. The donkey knew the way to the field and, with lunch delivered, the donkey duly delivered me back home to Mum.“ The family settled in Richmond but it was a banking career in the western suburbs that prompted Ettore to move to Woodend. “The train made it easy to get to work. I bought my adjoining 5-acre blocks in 1972 for $9,000. Rates were $4 pa per block. Like everybody else, I dreamt of raising sheep, cattle, ducks, geese, goats etc. Unfortunately the goats escaped through the fences and the foxes got the lambs and geese and it all proved to be way more work than we’d imagined. Now we just have chooks.“ The next venture was to grow flowers and for ten years Ettore grew and sold many varieties to local florists. While the fox problem was arrested, the 60,000 bulbs eventually brought about an allergic reaction, which was rarely relieved with anti histamines. From 1988 Ettore was a home father. “I got into leadlighting because my friend wanted to impress some woman and he told her we could make her a window that went from the floor to the second story. I borrowed a library book and taught

myself to leadlight. When she found out that we really didn’t know what we were doing she pulled the pin, and I was left with all this glass that I’d bought for the project.“ Ettore taught himself to cut glass and to create mosaics and leadlight. His first project forms part of a geometric design now in his front door. Needless to say, over twenty years experience has seen him recognised as a master of his trade and since establishing a leadlight and mosaic business at home in 1988, Ettore has taught the craft approximately 3500 locals. Classes are Monday to Wednesday mornings and evenings and run for 2 hours during the school terms. He also runs ‘The Little Gallery on High’ in Trentham in conjunction with two other local artists, Rose Wilson and Fran Harkins. Ettore instigated the Lions Market in 1985, which ran from the service station right along the footpath to the Commonwealth bank and had over 150 stalls. The feather in his cap is four recentlycommissioned bespoke panels for the synagogue on the corner of Toorak and St Kilda Roads. “It had four panels; two at 6' x 4' and two at 6' x 6'. Ramona Kabel designed the window, I made them and then Ramona touched up parts by painting on the glass. It’s probably the nicest thing I’ve worked on. Undoubtedly, the greatest leadlight example in Woodend is at St Ambrose church and the second is at Holgate’s hotel. The pub windows are original traditional-design Victorian, and they’re big! I’ve had to repair them a couple of times. They’re such old glass. The church windows in the rear elevated choir area were repaired due to vandalism. They are four metres high and slot together but are cemented into the brickwork so I had to dig them out. My neighbour

was inside and I was outside in a cherry picker. We taped the windows with duct tape and took out each window individually. They’d also be a hundred years old.“ Apart from leadlight, Ettore does a lot of fusing and slumping. It is flat layers of glass which, when heated, fuse together. The fused glass is then laid over a mould—usually a plate or bowl— which when reheated will slump into the shape of the mould. “We’re currently doing full torso glass bodies. We take a plaster mould and then create the slump from that. I hope to have an exhibition of these ready for September.“ Ettore’s community service initiative is the annual ‘Working Outside the Square’ exhibition where around 50 local artists sell works and donate some proceeds to a scholarship for young local artists. “This year’s theme was ‘books’. We donate $4,000 annually and have given away $29,000 since we began nine years ago. Applications from Year 12 students (or those at the end of their gap year) are interviewed and funds are distributed in February. The money must be used to fund art education and continued on page 2

Survey extended Council has extended the timeframe for people to complete a survey that seeks to understand the rural and regional landscapes that people value most about the Macedon Ranges. The survey will guide the development of a new planning statement that will recognise the region as an area of special significance in state-level planning policy. The survey will remain open until Friday 6 June. It is available online at mrsc.vic.gov.au/planning-statement, and in service centres in Gisborne, Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend. Respondents can choose to go in the draw to win an iPad mini. Council’s Director of Planning and Environment, Sophie Segafredo, said that over 200 people had completed the online survey so far, but that more responses were needed to provide a good representation of community views. “We are encouraging anyone from the Macedon Ranges, particularly young people, to undertake the survey. “The survey only takes 10 minutes to complete, and asks what is important to you in our natural environment and recreational areas, and how you use these areas,“ she said. Council held a successful community drop-in session on Thursday 22 May, where residents were given information about the policy, and gave verbal feedback to Council officers and Victorian Government representatives. “Some of the feedback we have received is that this new statement should apply to the whole shire, not the original designated area outlined in previous policies. “Residents also indicated that there was a need to separate the Macedon Ranges from urban expansion in surrounding municipalities,“ said Ms Segafredo. Once developed, the statement will form part of Victorian Government policy within the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme, and will guide planning decisions into the future. In June, Council will develop the draft planning statement based on community feedback received from the online survey, drop-in session and a targeted workshop with residents. The draft will be released for public comment in July before it is considered at the August Council meeting. It will then be provided to the Victorian Government for inclusion in the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme. For more information about the project, visit Council’s website or a Council service centre, or contact Council’s Strategic Planning unit on 5422 0333 or strategicplanning@ mrsc.vic.gov.au.

June 2014 NAIDOC 6 - 13 July 2014

Bike racks For our bike riding patients - we now have bike racks located near the ambulance bay.

New time to phone for results What is NAIDOC week? National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee week is held each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples. Why do we support it at Brooke Street Medical Centre? To acknowledge indigenous Australians: and celebrate their history, culture and achievements. To assist in “Closing the Gap” – by working to achieve the same health outcomes for indigenous peoples that other Australians experience.  Life expectancy is lower than it is for other Australians – by up to 20 years.  More children die in infancy than other Australian children.  Conditions like heart disease, diabetes and kidney disease are experienced at higher rates than other Australians. Why do we ask: “Are you of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin”? To help plan and deliver services to those at risk of the above health and life-expectancy issues. We ask this question of everyone – you can’t tell by appearance. When you self-identify as of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin, you will be asked if our nurse Kellie Tobias can give you a call back. Kellie is trained in culturally sensitive practice and offers health assessments and arrangement of services where needed. We hope to help you identify issues early and work with you to achieve the best health outcomes possible. Flags: We warmly thank the Woodend RSL for lending us their flags for this occasion. When doctors advise you to phone our nurses for results of tests, please call at the new time: between 12.00 midday – 1.00pm weekdays. Remember to leave enough time for your tests to be processed and reviewed by your doctor before you call.

Medical students We bid farewell and good luck to our semester one Monash Medical students. They leave in June for their final, regional placements. In July we will welcome a new group for the second semester. and the students write: It would be hard to overstate the impact our time at Brooke Street Medical Centre has had on us as medical students. We’re taught and supported by passionate people who care deeply about our education, and have always made us feel welcomed and included. The philosophy at BSMC is palpable and absorbing – that health-care is more than fixing diseases, it’s about being there for people. It’s clear to us that everyone here – whatever their role – cares about people; and the lengths that have gone into making the center accessible to everyone in the community continue to surprise and impress us. It’s fair to say that our time at BSMC has left a profound impact on all of us. Thank you. It has enriched us academically, professionally and personally. And I’m sure generations of Monash University medical students, now doctors, who have come through BSMC will continue striving to emulate the model of care that’s provided here. Last but not least, thank you also to the patients of BSMC, who have also been our teachers. Thank you for always offering incredible warmth and generosity. Woodend Cemetery

The Trust welcomed its first tour group on 6 May. Members of the Woodend Neighbourhood Walking Group braved a brisk and clear morning to hear about the history of the cemetery, the notable burials, plans for the future, some amusing anecdotes from the past and the different issues the Trust deals with to keep the cemetery running smoothly. Thank you to the Walking Group for their kind donation. If you or your group would like a tour, please contact Keryn on 0417 011 300 or by email at woodendcemetery@iinet.net.au

The WCT would like to thank Wayne and Mick at Woodend Produce for donating a gate for use as an emergency access to the cemetery. Our next task is to organise a working bee to install the gate along the East Street boundary. Works have been progressing to complete the upgrade of the waterline through the cemetery. We apologise for any disruption this has caused to cemetery users. General cemetery access is by foot but allowance is made for the elderly or disabled to drive into the cemetery, however we do ask that visitors be respectful, stay on the main driveway and close the gates when leaving. Did you know? The earliest monument within the cemetery is for a child, that of John Henry Peachy, who died on 30 June 1861 at the young age of 9. Submitted by Philip Johnson, Chairman on behalf of the Woodend Cemetery Trust.

Hanging Rock, now & the future Since entering Parliament in August 2013, no issue has loomed larger for me than Hanging Rock and the proposed development in the council-owned adjoining Eastern Paddock. The announcement by the Minister for Planning the Hon. Matthew Guy that Hanging Rock will be protected from development and that funding of $1 million will be provided to maintain and upgrade the park’s public facilities over four years is a momentous and historic one for the Macedon Ranges community. Hundreds of locals and some from far beyond have spoken with me about Hanging Rock – entrusting me with both their dreams and thoughts about this treasured place. I have raised your voices in the Parliament on five occasions since coming into this role. I pay tribute to the people I have met on this journey. Thank you. This is your moment. I acknowledge, as I have throughout this process, the work of the Macedon Ranges Shire Council and of our local councillors. This Council undertakes and supports many valued projects and initiatives for our community and for local volunteer groups. The Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s agreement to accept this announcement on Friday is welcomed. Finally I thank all my colleagues – most especially Minister Matthew Guy and Minister Ryan Smith for listening and delivering for the local community in this announcement – and also my predecessor, Mrs Donna Petrovich – a true local. Hanging Rock – as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be.

Yours sincerely, Amanda Millar, State Liberal Member of Legislative Council for Northern Victoria ADVERTISEMENT

Council welcomes state’s commitment to maintain Hanging Rock

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has welcomed a $1 million commitment from the Victorian Government to fund maintenance of Hanging Rock over the next four years, but says that a long-term plan is still needed to ensure the icon’s ongoing financial and environmental sustainability. Mayor, Cr Roger Jukes said that the $1 million boost was a welcome contribution to the essential works needed at Hanging Rock, but that many long-term challenges still remained. “We’re pleased that the Victorian Government has recognised the need for immediate funding to address the ageing of state-owned infrastructure, weed and pest problems at the Rock. “But Hanging Rock needs ongoing investment if it is going to continue to thrive as a natural asset and tourist icon,“ he said. “Hanging Rock is unique and precious, both to our residents and visitors to our shire. We need a long-term state government commitment to provide the best possible visitor and community experience,” he said. The funding announcement by Minister for Planning, Matthew Guy MLC, comes after Council and the Victorian Government completed a study into securing a sustainable income source for Hanging Rock in 2011. “We’ve been working with the Victorian Government for a long time on the need for ongoing funding of Hanging Rock, which is a state-owned asset. “Council is the custodian and caretaker of this asset, but we need the ongoing support of the state to maintain it to the standard that the community and visitors expect” said Cr Jukes. First girls in woodend to achieve their scout medallions Our Term Two brochure is available on our website – www. woodendnh.org.au – and still has some courses on it that you might want to join. Both Creative Writing (Mondays 7-9pm) and Performance Poetry and Public Speaking (Wednesdays 7–9pm) are still accepting new interested persons, in fact, you can join them at any time, just call and book your place with us. We are surely headed into winter, the early weeks of May threw out a reminder of the months to come, and our heating gave us some trouble for a few of those days. It’s all fixed now, don’t worry. As we head into the cooler months it is often a time for reflection and contemplation. If you are in the frame of mind to set yourself on a new path then maybe our series of half day workshops facilitated by Kate Lawrence is your starting point. What is Success? was held on 31st May, coming up on 15th June is The Oldest Enchantment (storytelling) and on 27th July (all Sundays) is The Seven Simple Tools for Happiness. Kate is also running her popular Happy and Whole series for us in Term Three, commencing on Thursday 24th July from 10–11.30am. All of these activities and also a Women’s Circle and a Mental Health Carers’ Support Group are being held in our new cosy lounge, a less formal meeting or activity room for all those times when you just want to connect. It’s furnished with a comfy lounge, some well-padded chairs, a coffee table and is housing our honesty library. It’s close to the kitchen and small enough to heat quickly with a few bodies in there. Why not have your community meeting in the space; it’s the same rate to hire as all our other smaller rooms. Lastly a quick call out for any new courses for Term Three! Get them into Angela now as she is putting the final touches on the brochure as you read this (absolute deadline 4th June). Call us on 5427 1845 to see whether your course can fit into our spaces. The under-croft is now also available for the more messy pursuits of arts and handy-crafts, so a call could be worth it. Submitted by Jill Scanlon, Coordinator

Seven scouts from 2nd Woodend Scouts were recognised in May by being presented with the Scout Medallion, the highest award a girl or boy can achieve in the Scout section. In an impressive ceremony held in Melbourne, 119 scouts from all over Victoria were presented with their Scout Medallions by the Chief Commissioner, Brendan Watson. The scouts were escorted into the hall by a full Scottish Pipe Band, and over 400 proud parents, relatives and leaders watched their children receive their individual recognition. In order to earn their Scout Medallions the seven scouts collectively camped out for over 420 nights; hiked, paddled or biked over 1,000km; completed more than 300 hours community service; and developed many important life skills such as leadership, first aid, cooking and self-confidence.

Layla Barker, Lauren Walduck and Victorian Chief Commissioner Brendan Watson. Margot Woodard from Woodend was absent but also received the award

Of special significance this year was that three girls from 2nd Woodend received their Scout Medallions at the ceremony. They are the first girls in Woodend to receive this award, which was instituted 10 years ago. Since girls began joining scouts thirty years ago, their numbers have increased so that now half of the cubs and scouts in 2nd Woodend Scout Group are girls. If you would like more information about scouting, please contact Jane Walduck on 0417 440 228. Submitted by J Walduck

Huge turnout for Mother’s Day Classic

More than 135,000 Australians, in a record 99 locations including Woodend formed a national sea of pink at the recent Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic breast cancer research walk and run. This year was Woodend’s biggest event yet, with approximately 900 walkers and runners participating on the day. The positive spirit on the day was palpable. It was a beautiful day filled with love and camaraderie as the community came together to support this important cause. The organisers of the Woodend event would like to thank our volunteers and our generous sponsors

ME Bank, Cobaw Community Health, The Rotary Club of Woodend, Macedon Ranges Shire Council, Woodend Bowling Club, Sunbury Community Health, Western Water, Woodend SES, R T Edgar Woodend, Sign Obsession, Macedon Ranges Nursery, Macedon Ranges Signs and the Macedon Ranges Running Club.

We look forward to seeing you at this fabulous event in 2015. Donations can still be made at www. mothersdayclassic.com.au/donate Organised by: Women in Super (WIS) is a national organisation of women working with and for not-forprofit superannuation funds. WIS cares about the health of women as well as their financial wellbeing and in 1998 established Mother’s Day Classic, an event which has become the single largest donor to the NBCF.

Mother’s Day Classic was a fun and meaningful way to spend Mother’s Day and national organisers were grateful for the huge support shown by regional Australia. The event is the biggest single donor to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), funding research projects into detection, prevention, treatment and ultimately finding a cure. Mother’s Day Classic has donated $19.8 million to NBCF research since its beginings in 1998 (including a record $5 million in 2013). This does not yet include money raised in 2014. Fundraising is open until 16 May, and the 2014 total will be announced in mid June. The nation’s largest charity event also aims to honour and support those affected by breast cancer. “It gives me goose bumps each Mother’s Day to look out into that sea of pink and to feel the camaraderie and support offered to event participants. Every single person who joined in today or who donated helped make Mother’s Day memorable and meaningful,” national chair Louise Davidson said. On average, 40 Australian women are diagnosed with breast cancer each day. Research has played a major part in breast cancer 5 year survival rates increasing to nearly 90% since the Mother’s Day Classic began.

Trees for Mum a sucess

On a glorious autumn Mother’s Day, and for the third year running, Woodend Landcare hosted Trees for Mum. 260 trees, shrubs and grasses were planted by a huge crowd coming from wide and far. Over 33 different postcodes were recorded on the sign-in sheets including Packenham, Jan Juc, Echuca, Melbourne and Healesville. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with lots of thanks for the opportunity to help the environment and honour mothers, both late and living. We hope everyone will enjoy the planting alongside the Rotary Exercise track for many years to come. Thanks to all our members for their help with preparation and on the day. More hard graft by the Thursday Crew has revealed a lake next to Gilbert Gordon oval, from behind a wall of blackberry and willow. Lake Earnshaw was built in the 1920s and was a popular swimming hole for many decades before it fell into disuse. A Western Water grant and MRSC funding have helped us with woody weed removal and a planting day is planned for October. We’d love to know more about the history of the lake -–if anyone has memories of it in its heyday, please drop us a line on woodendlandcare@gmail.com or call 5427 2312. Pat Dwyer. Cambodian Kids Foundation In January this year, seventeen year old Pat Dwyer travelled to Cambodia to work at the Soksan International School, which was built by the Cambodian Kids Foundation in 2012. Initially a little hesitant to go, Pat now considers this as the greatest experience of his life and is already planning to visit again. “I thought the poverty would be too challenging for me, and I didn’t realise I would just have so much fun”. Pat helped to implement a Kelly Sports programme which meant he could teach AFL and other perceptual motor skills to the children. Pat has some experience in this area, having assisted his father Joel run the local Auskick programme for many years. Pat also had the opportunity to travel to the Northern Territory last year as part of his Sacred Heart Kyneton work experience; where he assisted as an AFL junior development officer working with indigenous kids. Pat’s mother Jane, who also volunteered in Cambodia, says that she watched her son grow in confidence and maturity throughout their two and a half week experience. “He was really quiet the first week, just taking it all in. Then he blossomed; laughing and talking easily with the villagers and the other volunteers”. Jane said the whole experience was really well organised. Former students of the school met the group of about 24 volunteers in Phnom Penh to act as interpreters and escort them to Soksan village, which is about

180km north west of the capital. She said they felt safe and supported the whole time, and she would not hesitate to let Pat return unaccompanied with another organised group later this year. Pat says that he made many friends while in Cambodia, and is keeping in contact with a number of the other younger volunteers from his group. His experience has made him determined to continue working with young children in some capacity. Pat has obviously been changed by his experience, and it is uplifting to listen to a young person speak so passionately and with a clear sense of direction. “We have so much, and half the time we don’t need any of it”, he says with Protect your of his head and a knowing smile. a shake entertaining area Cambodian Kids Foundation was established in all yearThe around by enclosing it with 2006 by the local Cooper family; and their efforts, assisted the mesh or PVC panel by blinds. many volunteers and sponsors have transformed the lives Specially of an designed entire village. Sustainable Gardening Workshop

26 July: Sustainable garden design Macedon Ranges Shire Council in collaboration with Western Water is offering free sustainable gardening workshops throughout 2014 for local residents. The next workshop, ‘Sustainable garden design: general tips plus design in bushfire zones,’ will be conducted on 26 July by Michael McCoy, an experienced gardening writer and local resident in the Macedon Ranges. Micheal McCoy has written extensively about gardening, including books and articles for the major gardening publications. Design is key to ensuring that a sustainable garden uses the available space and resources effectively. The workshops will cover assessing a garden site and ensuring appropriate plant selection. “We know that many of our residents are keen or budding gardeners, so Council is proud to host this series of hands-on workshops in partnership with Western Water,“ said Mayor, Cr Roger Jukes Western Water’s General Manager, Customer and Community Relations, Peter Donlon said, “We are pleased to be partnering with Council for these workshops, which will help local residents create healthy, sustainable gardens that need less water to thrive.“ The first workshop will take place from 10:30am to 12 noon on Saturday 26 July at the Riddells Ceek Neighbourhood House. All workshops are open to anyone interested in learning and are free to attend. Places are limited, so please register your attendance in advance. Film Society Loses Its Memory!

At the May meeting of the Macedon Ranges Film Society, members were asked to concentrate on the film being screened and marvel at our ability to make memories. Guy Pearce who plays Leonard Shelby in the 2000 film, Memento, has trouble with this. He can’t make new memories and since he is determined to track down his wife’s killer, this becomes very difficult indeed. He relies on a system of hand-written notes, tattoos and Polaroid photos. But does this work? The MRFS aims over the course of a year, to show films of different genres and June’s film, Mary and Max, is a far cry from Memento. This 2009 film is a claymated feature film from the creators of the Academy Award-winning short animation Harvie Krumpet. Writer/director Adam Elliot employs the voices of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Toni Collette, Eric Bana and Barry Humphries in this charming tale of unlikely friendship between two lonely people, an 8-year-old girl living in Melbourne and a 44-year-old man living in New York. The Macedon Ranges Film Society meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 7pm in the Woodend Community Centre. Film notes are provided and for those who wish, there is supper, kindly supplied by members. Enquiries about membership must first be made by emailing mrfilmsociety@gmail.com or call Lorraine on 5427 0921 or Christine on 5429 5452.

Gisborne Bushwalking Club

The Gisborne Bushwalking Club has been in operation since 1982 and is currently well supported and active. We organise walks at about two week intervals on either Saturday or Sunday and also on the first Wednesday of each month. These take the form of a full day walk and we carry water, our lunch and wet weather gear, if necessary. The walks vary from easy (about 12–14 km on fairly easy tracks) to hard (18–20 km on steep tracks or cross country). We usually end up at a spot where coffee and cakes can be purchased! We also have a couple of weekends a year when we venture further away and stay overnight in camp style accommodation, so that we can walk for 2 or 3 days. Some of our members have been in the club since its foundation and the average age of members is increasing, so we are keen to have new members join the club and you would be made welcome on any walk. If you have thought about having some good walks and exploring the district come and joins. MRBA wins grants In breaking news, the standard of basketball competition in Woodend is set to improve with the fantastic announcement on 14 May that the MRBA had received two grants from the Victorian Department of Sport and Recreation. Announced at the Castlemaine Golf Club by Minister for Sport and Recreation, Damian Drum MLC, the MRBA will receive a Country Action grant of $1500 towards coaching

courses as well as a VicTalent grant of $500 to go towards the travelling costs of the coaches of our Sunbury teams. The Country Action grants aim to increase the capacity of sport and recreation organisations in regional Victoria. The VicTalent grant provides assistance for sports where travel is required in order to engage in competition. These grants will go a long way at the MRBA – improving the knowledge and skills not only of our many volunteer coaches and parents, but also making a major difference to the many young players who will benefit from the coaches’ development. Cyclists’ Safety Campaign Survey

A large peloton of cyclists turned out on Anzac Day for a memorial ride, organized by Metro Velo, to commemorate the day and also celebrate success of the Bike Safe Macedon Ranges road safety campaign. The billboards are now gone from our roads but we hope that everyone will remember the simple message to “Pass Cyclists with Care“ delivered by the campaign.

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the campaign we are inviting everyone: drivers, cyclists, anyone who uses the roads in the region to take a couple of minutes to complete our on line survey. e are interested to know what was effective and what could be improved. The results will inform us as to how we should approach future campaigns aimed at improving the safety of all cyclists using our roads, provided we are able to obtain funding, to deliver them. To complete the survey go: www.surveymonkey. com/s/BSMRcampaignfeedback0514 or you can connect to the link via our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ BikeSafeMacedonRanges. What a busy time it’s been. The 5km & 10k Start Running Group milestone has been reached and well done to the all runners that completed the program. Such an amazing thing considering many had never run before they started the SRG program. We would like to congratulate Sally Piper in receiving her lifetime membership. She has been such a driving force in this club. Thanks again for you true running spirit. The date for our spring Start Running Group has been set for September 1. So if you ever thought about giving running a go this is the ideal opportunity to have a crack and join an inspirational bunch of runners–Grandparents, mums, dads, teenagers– the program works for everybody and great friends. I have been running with the Riddell group for over a year now and it’s been one of the best times of my life. We do things we think we can’t, and achieve goals we thought we couldn’t. My second marathon is coming up soon and I know I would not have been able to achieve this without the support of our very dedicated leaders and friends. I’d also like to say a big thanks to Cobaw Community Health who’ve come onboard, together we are striving to improve the communities health, fitness and wellbeing. Well done to all the runners out there, specially those continuing through winters frosty mornings and rainy days. Submitted by Travis van Niekerk, MRRG committee member.

The Caroline Chisolm Shelter Sheds Ian Beever, one of our volunteers, found this interesting information about the Caroline Chisolm shelter sheds, one of which was at Woodend and another at Carlsruhe. Ten of these shelter sheds were erected between Melbourne and Castlemaine in 1855 after Mrs Caroline Chisolm, expressing her disgust at the conditions for travellers, especially women and children, along the goldfields road, had agitated for the Government to build shelters providing cheap bed and board. The Woodend shelter shed was on the east side of Nicholson Street behind the London and Liverpool Arms Hotel; the site is now part of the Woodend Children’s Park. The shed was managed by Mr. & Mrs. O’Connor, who as managers, lived rent-free and were able to eke out a living from the daily takings. When the gold rush waned and the railway gave faster travel, many of the sheds Our Men at War were used for other purposes. The Woodend one was used for Anglican services before St Mary’s Church was built and also housed early council meetings. A letter written in March 1858 by an Englishman to his parents in England, and published in the Woodend Star in February 1934, described these sheds. His racist comments we find totally abhorrent but have to

acknowledge that that was the attitude of some at that time. I guess we have to at least concede that there was no attempt to segregate the races at the shed, all being given equal accommodation. “These sheds are 5 or 6 miles apart all up the Mount Alexander Road from Melbourne. It is a long building divided into three compartments, the middle one being the kitchen and sitting room. One end is the bedroom of the family who managed it, and the other end is the dormitory of the lodgers. Down each side of the dormitory is ranged a row of strange looking machines they call bedsteads. By paying 6d you may lie on the floor but by paying 1s you are admitted to the luxury of placing yourself on one of the aforesaid machines. But you soon find it is by no means the kind of thing to rest your bones upon, there being no bed, unless you call a canvas bag with a hatful of straw in it a bed. It is impossible to fall out of because if you rolled off your own bedstead then you must roll onto somebody else’s. An occurrence not desirable when a person sleeps as I did one night with a repulsive Chinaman on one side, and a more disgusting nigger on the other.“ The Carlsruhe shelter shed was managed by the Cadogan sisters, Anastasia and Mary, who had come from London in 1854 to improve their position and took up the management of that shelter. A letter headed AN APPEAL was printed in the Kyneton Observer in May 1863, telling of their troubles: “The following appeal is made to the benevolent on behalf of the two females who for six years respectably conducted the shelter shed at Carlsruhe, and who have been deprived of an independence, the hard earnings of six years, through the Government granting the shed for the use of the National Schools, just at the time when they had, upon the assurance of Mr Brooks in the Parliament House that the sheds must be left for the purpose for which they were built, laid out all their ready money in the part purchase, the fencing, and partial grubbing and cultivating ten acres of land, and of which, if they had been allowed, as they requested, to have stayed two years longer in the shed they would have been able to have completed the purchase, finished grubbing, and fully cropped, and gone out of the shed at Christmas, 1863, perfectly independent;“ It continues: “whereas by the loss of the shed, they were suddenly deprived of the means of living, as they had left themselves entirely dependent on the daily receipts of the house for their maintenance, and consequently they were obliged to sacrifice the land to the mortgagee at a loss of £35, and everything that they had got around them by six years honest industry and truly hard labor was obliged to be sacrificed at not a quarter their value for their immediate support, and they are now, after twelve month’s bitter suffering, reduced to utter destitution, and must, unless a sympathizing public assist them, die of starvation. In the sincere hope that this appeal may be more successful than that which they made to the Government, they have only to add that whatever may be contributed will be duly esteemed and gratefully acknowledged By your truly unfortunate servant, MARY CADOGAN, Carlsruhe Subscriptions will be received by the Rev.G.O.Vance, Rector of Kyneton“ After their death the Kyneton Guardian paid tribute to them saying that their uncomplaining bravery under their privations had won for them the greatest of respect among the people of Carlsruhe, Woodend and Kyneton. As a result of the help they received the sisters in 1864 were able to open a little sewing and embroidery store which they ran for the rest of their lives during which time the elder sister went blind. Anastasia died in December 1880 aged 80, and Mary three months later in March 1881 aged 75. They are both buried in the Carlsruhe Cemetery.
