Celebrate Mums with Trees on Mother’s Day Trees for Mum Woodend will be held on Mother’s Day, Sunday, 11 May from 9.30am to midday at the Rotary Community Exercise Track near Buffalo Stadium on Forest Street, Woodend. Trees for Mum is a series of free national Landcare events inviting children of all ages to celebrate their Mums, by planting trees in their honour on Mother’s Day. The event is now in its third year in Woodend, attracting around 150 people each year.
The Mother’s Day Classic has become firmly entrenched as an important event in the Macedon Ranges. Since 1998 the Mother’s Day Classic has grown into one of Australia’s largest charity events and has become an integral part of Mother’s Day for thousands of Australians. Since 1998 the Mother’s Day classic has raised $19.8 million, with all proceeds donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Woodend Mums Kristy Woodhouse and Angela Van Dam with their children

Gather your friends and family, head to the Woodend Children’s Park and join over 120,000 people Australia wide in celebrating mothers and raising funds for breast cancer research. Choose between a 4km or 8km walk or run. There will be other attractions at the park on the day including a sausage sizzle, children’s activities, live music, raffles and spot prizes. Registration opens at 7:30am, with official welcome starting at 8:30am. The event kicks off at 9:00am. Woodend CFA fund raiser Your local Woodend Fire Brigade is a 100% volunteer brigade that provides an invaluable service to our community. In fact, we are called to up to 150 turn—outs a year … or an average of 2 to 3 a week. In addition to this, as was evident in the recent major 2014 fires, our vehicles and members are also called upon to volunteer for Strike Teams on a statewide and interstate basis. So far this year, as well as looking after incidents in our local community, over 40 members of the Woodend Fire Brigade have been involved in Strike Teams and support roles at major fires both locally and statewide giving up their own time to help others. Our total contribution was around 1,000 ’person hours’ providing round the clock support at major fire scenes. The CFA provides the Woodend Fire Brigade with vehicles and equipment to suit its brigade risk profile; however the Brigade’s Tanker 2, Support & Forward Control Vehicle are partly— or wholly—funded by the Woodend Brigade. We also purchase specialist equipment on our own behalf, which is not covered by the CFA. Hence the importance of raising funds to maintain our fleet and service to a quality that we believe will best serve this community. Woodend’s Tanker 2 has given the community excellent service over the last 15 years and now the time approaches for it to be upgraded. Tanker 2 becomes Woodend’s primary vehicle when Tanker 1 is away on Strike Team duty, so its vital to fund this required upgrade. We have been working on this important replacement for several years, and our goal is to replace it as soon as possible with a state—of—the—art new twin cab tanker, which will cost approximately $350,000. We also need to upgrade our station, which is now approaching 20 years of age. In some areas it is now too cramped for both vehicles and volunteers to operate safely.

A Great ’Good Friday’ collection
Once again, the Woodend, Newham and Hesket—Kerrie CFA Brigades conducted the annual Good Friday collection for the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal throughout the roads, streets and tracks of the area. A very big thank you to all of the CFA volunteers, family members and friends from the three brigades, around 50 in total, who volunteered to door knock, patrol intersections and count the collection, many giving up most of their day, and to the Woodend Ladies’ Auxiliary for ensuring that all were well fed and watered throughout the day A special thanks to everyone living in and visiting the Woodend, Newham, Hesket and Kerrie areas who donated so generously, raising a record of just under $14,750 – including over $12,500 for Woodend, nearly $1,250 for Newham and more than $1,110 for Hesket—Kerrie. A special mention to the McKinnon family who had six members collecting in Woodend, and between them they raised around $3,900. The Kyretses nearly $1,500 and the Price family over $1,000. Some great individual efforts included Sammy K with $1,152, Georgia McK $1,120 and Charlotte Mck $1,010, while Oliver and Maddi Price and James Selby also did a great job. A special thank you also to the Woodend businesses who allowed for collection containers in the week prior, and to the team at the Commonwealth Bank for the final money count. Unfortunately, we were not able to cover every home, and many people were away for the Easter break and start of the School Holidays, so it you wish to still donate to the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal, donations are being accepted up to the end of May – please drop into the Woodend, Newham and Hesket—Kerrie CFA stations any Sunday morning. Dedicated to the just and humane treatment of asylum seekers and refugees. With support from Woodend Anglican, our Banner “Let’s Fully Welcome Refugees” is now up again in Woodend’s Anglican Church grounds on High Street. MRRAR has been very active, recently hosting six asylum seekers in local homes and enjoying a terrific day climbing local hotspot Hanging Rock together. Another hosting visit is planned for May. Food donations Food donations are being collected for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Melbourne. Any non—perishable food or toiletries can be left at Collier Office & Business Assist or St Mary’s in Woodend. “Mary meets Mohammad” The MMAR group invites you to a free screening of ’Mary meets Mohammad’. This award winning documentary looks at Tasmania’s first detention centre through the eyes of local knitting club member Mary, and Afghan Hazara asylum seeker Mohammad, who is detained inside the centre, as they connect through the gift of a knitted beanie. Ride to concour cancer With one in two Australians diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, many in the Woodend community have been affected by cancer, whether it’s a personal battle, a relative or a friend. A group of locals have set out to raise funds for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the only public hospital in Australia solely dedicated to cancer. Spokes of Hope are a local team of amateur cyclists who will ride 200km in the 2014 Ride to Conquer Cancer to raise funds for the Peter Mac centre. All Spokes of Hope riders have been affected in some way by cancer and have set out to raise at least $2500 each to help fund cancer research. The team first entered the Ride in 2012 and five riders raised $25,000. This year the team has grown and they are asking for more riders to join them and for anyone in the community support them. Nicole Jacks, who rode for the team in 2012 says it’s more than just fundraising and riding, it’s raising awareness. “The last ride we did was a fantastic weekend where we rode a tough course with battling cancer at the front of our minds. Crossing the line the next day was an emotional experience as the reality of this disease hit home. There were many tears from supporters of riders. I highly recommend anyone getting involved,” she said. “The riding is made easy by the camaraderie of the riders and event volunteers. Anyone can do it.” Her husband Daron said supporting the riders was a great weekend, but it was the finish line that brought home the purpose of the ride. “Seeing cancer patients so elated and proud of those riding for them was an emotional experience. I have friends with, and lost friends to cancer. It made me realise we can all do more to help find a cure to this hideous disease” This year’s event is on October 24–25 on the Mornington Peninsula. Sing along for Mother’s Day
Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s first Morning Music show of the year will be held on Friday 9 May at the Kyneton Town Hall, providing the perfect gift idea in the lead up to Mother’s Day. Starring John Lidgerwood, ’Yes, I Remember it Well’ is a brand new tribute show featuring stories and songs from classic film and stage masterpieces, including a tribute to the musicals of Lerne and Loewe; Brigadoon, Gigi, Camelot, My Fair Lady and Paint Your Wagon. The show starts at 11.30am and tickets can be purchased for $17.50 each or as part of a four show package for $62. Other shows include a Pavarotti sing-a-long, Ernie Sigley and Kamahl. Mayor, Cr Roger Jukes said that a Mother’s Day celebration was the perfect way to kick off Council’s Morning Music program, which encourages community participation in the arts. “The Morning Music program gives those who prefer their entertainment by day, rather than by night, the chance to enjoy a diverse range of musical performances.” Each ticket also entitles the holder to free entry at the Kyneton Museum, which is open Friday to Sunday, 11am– 4pm. The current exhibition, 100 Frames: flood events in photographs features photographs taken by flood—affected residents living in Gannawarra, Campaspe, Loddon and Swan Hill shires. “Complete your Mother’s Day weekend with a visit to this exhibition, which offers a fascinating insight into the impact that the floods had on these communities. It highlights their strength and resilience as they banded together through the recovery process,” said Cr Jukes. Macedon Grammar School Drama Group at rehearsals for ’A Christmas Chaos’
The Royal Shakespearean Company goes astray, and a motley crew of actors assemble to put on the play in just seven hours. With mistakes, bad puns and even worse acting antics, “A Christmas Chaos” will be a riotous comedy! “When I first read the play, I thought it would be hard to pull off," says actor Matthew Sievers who is portraying ‘Scrooge’ in the production “but it’s really developed and there’s so much comical depth to it. Speech Sounds in Children
Learning to talk takes time, from newborn attempts to communicate by crying through to the complex speech sound combinations in words and sentences. According to Speech Pathology Australia: • By 2 years of age, your toddler should be saying a range of speech sounds when talking — p, b, m, t, d, n, h, w. • By 3 years of age, most children can say the sounds — k, g, f, ng • By 4 years of age, your child should be saying the sounds — l, s, z, sh, ch, j • r, v, and th are later developing sounds, and are produced accurately by most children by the ages of 5, 6, and 8 1/2 respectively. A 3 year olds speech should be understood by unfamiliar people 75% of the time, and by 5 years of age understood by everyone. A breakdown at any point in the intricate process of speech development, such as incorrect positioning of the tongue (if your child uses the tip of their tongue, instead of the back of the tongue, to produce the word “car”, they will produce the word as “tar”) or incorrect air flow (as with a ’lateral lisp’), can lead to a reduction in your child’s ability to speak clearly or be understood. Macedon Ranges businesses can learn smarter business practices from skilled professionals at a two day conference hosted by Macedon Ranges Shire Council, Small Business Victoria and Tourism Macedon Ranges. The Smart Business conference will be held from 20–21 May at the Kyneton Town Hall. It offers a range of workshops to local business owners and their staff, covering marketing, social media, finance and other business practices. Hands—on training sessions will allow businesses to learn new skills and embrace new tools. Popular presenter, Tim Gentle from Design Experts in Bendigo, will deliver the marketing and online workshops, including two training sessions on the use of social media tools and mobile devices. There are also sessions aimed specifically at start— up businesses. The sessions are run by qualified business professionals who are trained to provide insightful and interactive sessions. Conference—goers will also be able to access a free mentoring session on site from the Small Business Victoria Mobile Business Centre during the conference. Places at individual sessions can be purchased for $30. Discount packages are available to attend either a full day ($65—$75) or two days ($130). June is bowelscan month
Australia has the world’s highest incidence of bowel cancer – 1 in 12, in both men and women. The risk begins at age 40, doubling every five years and more rapidly as the person gets older. Statistics show 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully cured if detected at an early stage. Early detection leads to an improved prognosis and less severe treatment. Bowel cancers begin as polyps, which are growths occurring in the lining of the bowel. Because polyps can develop into cancer, early diagnosis and removal of all polyps is important. More than 75% of people who develop bowel cancer do not have a family history of the disease. For the over 40s Bowelscan is an easy, inexpensive method for early detection. Annual Testing is strongly recommended for all men and women over the age of 40. Rotary Bowel Scan Kits will be available from the Woodend Pharmacy from the middle of May for 4 weeks. The kits are $10 each and can be returned to the pharmacy to be sent out for processing. Australian Rotary Clubs have issued approximately 150,000 kits during their annual Colorectal Screening programs. Since Bowelscan commenced, it is estimated that more than 1,000 people with bowel cancer and 5,000 with polyps have been detected. The Rotary Club of Woodend will be running the Bowelscan Program in conjunction with the Woodend Pharmacy as a Community Awareness Project. Be kind to yourself, look after your health. National Volunteer week 2014 marks 25 years of National Volunteer Week. A week when we take time to celebrate the volunteers who empower and support resilient communities through their work. Woodend Library and Woodend Connection Volunteer Network will join thousands of organisations around the nation to mark the 25th anniversary of National Volunteer Week in Australia (12–18 May). This year’s campaign theme “Celebrate the Power of Volunteering” is all about appreciating and understanding the work of volunteers across the nation. Woodend Library and Woodend Connection Volunteer Network recognises the valuable contribution of its many volunteers; without them we would not be able to service the community of Woodend. Janet Pearce, Chairperson of Woodend Neighbourhood House said: “National Volunteer Week 2014, enables us to dedicate and honour our volunteers through time that they so selflessly give up to us. Thank you very much to everyone who has donated their old phones to this recycling program. The “They’re Calling On You”campaign commenced in August 2013 at Woodend Primary School, and together with the phones dropped off at Collier Office & Business Assist, 122 phones were collected and sent off in December. Your donation of these phones has helped in the gorilla conservation effort. All the phones donated have been: • diverted from landfill. • lessening the demand for coltan mining by giving the coltan in your old mobile phone a second life. • helping raise much needed funds to support primate conservation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This recycling program is continuing in 2014 as it is a very worthwhile cause. Easter Raffle Patrick Murray won the first prize in Woodend Kindergarten’s Easter raffle.Patrick, from the Bilby group, took home a hamper full of treats. Rachael Mason (Koala group) and Ruby Sgubin (Rosella group) won the second and third prizes.The raffle raised $565. “Our Easter raffle proved very popular – especially with the children,” said Mark Constable, the kindergarten president. “The prizes were donated by families from the kindergarten and we really appreciate their support. “I’d also like to thank Hallmark Cards, who provided items to wrap the prizes.” The next major fundraiser will be a trivia night at the Norma Richardson Hall, in Buckland St, on Saturday June 14. 2014 Seniors Festival grants
Macedon Ranges Shire Council is offering grants of up to $900 to local groups to run an activity during October as part of the 2014 Victorian Seniors Festival. The Victorian Seniors Festival is a statewide program of activities for older people during the month of October. Events in Melbourne run from 5–12 October, with local activities to follow in the Macedon Ranges for the rest of the month. Council is supporting groups within the shire to offer activities from 12–31 October, to avoid clashing with the Melbourne events. Any group can apply, but applications must meet certain criteria. Activities should be free or low-cost (less than $5), take place in the Macedon Ranges Shire, and address at least one of the following criteria: • Encourage people to be more physically active • Encourage people to be creative e.g. participate in an artistic activity • Promote social connections, particularly for people who might not usually participate. No more than one activity will be funded in the same township, so groups are encouraged to collaborate to avoid competing for the same pool of funds. Applications will close on Friday 27 June and all applicants should discuss their proposed project with Stephanie Harper, Council’s Healthy Ageing Officer, before submitting their application. Macedon Ranges Bridge Club
It’s that time of the year when the Macedon Ranges Bridge Club looks to offer instruction classes to beginners, on how to play bridge. Why do people play bridge? We often categorise things or people in sets of 4 – earth, air, fire, water and (spades, hearts, clubs diamonds) are two very obvious groupings. So maybe people play bridge because they are: competitive (spades, fire), social (hearts, earth), intellectual (diamonds, water), perfectionists (clubs, air). Of course most of us are a mix of all of the above, and the MRBC caters for everyone. If the thought of learning to play Bridge has ever crossed your mind, come along and give it a go; and dealing the cards for a game of Bridge can throw up in excess of 53 billion, billion, billion hands (if you ever wanted to know!). We aim to run a series of 2—hour Beginner Lessons, to be conducted on 8 consecutive Thursday evenings, or Friday afternoons, commencing in early May. Many older people will have heard of U3A, and no doubt some have told themselves that University is not for them. In this case, the word University is used in its original sense of people exchanging ideas and sharing knowledge. So please think again. Our U3A is based at Gisborne Further Education Centre in Hamilton St, and it’s a great way to meet other people in a friendly atmosphere, and have a chance to talk about interesting topics. We are organising two special events during the midwinter term, and we are inviting YOU – yes! YOU who are reading this article now! – to join us for one or both of them. These events are for members only – a series of informal discussion courses – the topics are: • Four of the vanished kingdoms of Europe • Exploring opera Two subjects, over four weeks, with leaders who know their topics well. This term, the courses take place in the afternoons, from 1.00 – 2.00, following the morning guest speaker, and lunch. Q3A A Very, Very Special presentation that we are calling Q3A. This is a combination of U3A and Q&A (as seen on the ABC), and will have the same format, except no television cameras! A panel of invited guests will be chaired by our own wise man, Roger Jones OAM, and will include two local MPs, Joanne Duncan and Amanda Millar, Bryan Power, Geoff Hildebrand and Don Watson. One or two others are being sought. The topic for discussion, in which you, the audience can join in is: Is our present system of voting for elections for the Australian Senate the best way to ensure a fair, democratic result for the whole community? This event is open to the public, and will be held on Monday June 16th, commencing at 10.30 . Lunch will be served afterwards to all attendees, and the whole thing is free of charge. On Friday 21st March, the Newham Sculptural Pig Project and Art Exhibition was officially opened in the Mechanic’s Institute by Jennifer Kalionis, Director of the Castlemaine Art Gallery, with much beautiful art and the decorated pigs on display. Saturday 22nd March heralded show time! The Pigs had been on show around Newham for a few weeks, perched on apple crates loaned by Chaplin’s Orchard, now some would go off to their sponsored homes and the rest would be offered for sale and auction. Marquees featuring Edgar’s Mission, Bruce Hedge with his apple juicing demonstration, Barfold Olives, Halfpint Vegan Dairy, Hanging Rock Winery, Josh’s Eggs, Organic Sunrise juices, Pork to the Paddock, Steph Goss, Western Water, Woodend Sustainability and a stall by the Newham Garden Club selling items including bulbs, preserves and spectacular pig cupcakes were positioned about Warm drinks were provided by Church Lane Coffee and in keeping with the history of a bacon factory, Julia and Michael at The Newham General Store offered delicious pork meals plus a sausage sizzle was run by Maggie Staley. Music featured through out the day with the 19 piece Daylesford Swing Band playing in Wesley Park The Newham Primary School was also buzzing with activities for the children, face painting, student performances and an Animal Farm too. A feature was the tiny pigs painted by the students of the Woodend Primary School, Carlsruhe Annex, the pig pinch pots created by Newham Primary School students and an amazing Dragon pig from the Candlebark School children. Peppa Pig made a surprise visit too At 10.00am a fabulous procession of pigs and people was lead from the School to the Hall by Sandy Hood and the Newham Primary School drummers where the pigs were set on show. The culmination of the saw an auxtion of some of the pigs, Reece Nuttel of RT Edgar did a magnificent job, as the bidding was spirited and all the pigs were sold. The day was a resounding success ! Special thanks must go to the Macedon Ranges Shire Council for providing the grant to manufacture of the life sized pigs. We also thank the following for their particular support of the concurrent art exhibition and school’s participation, RT Edgar, Cope—Williams Arts Foundation, Hanging Rock Winery, CFA, two private sponsors, Bruce Hedge and Michael Dillon for generous photographic assistance and the community for their support On 7th April, $13,000 comprising profits raised from the Art Exhibition and Festival was presented to Janet and Bernie Hawkins for Very Special Kids, Osmond Park Farm, Woodend, a truly inspirational place. Council’s draft budget
Aiming to strengthen liveability Macedon Ranges Shire Council is inviting community comment on its draft budget for the upcoming financial year, which proposes a 4.8% average rate increase and over $7.5 million in improvements to the shire’s road network. Mayor, Cr Jukes said the draft budget looks to strengthen liveability and protect and enhance what makes people choose to live and do business in the Macedon Ranges. “Council budgets must balance environmental, infrastructure and social needs with available resources, including rates and grant funds. We have sought to achieve this within the community’s capacity to pay, and welcome your feedback. “The draft budget includes a capital works program of approximately $7.5 million for the construction and improvement of our road network. As usual, priority will be given to roads that will deliver maximum benefit to the wider community,” he said. Mayor, Cr Jukes said that Council was in the middle of some major projects, many of which require a continuation of funding in this year’s budget. “Current projects funded in this year’s budget include the Macedon Ranges netball complex in Gisborne, the Bluestone Theatre in Kyneton and the resurfacing of the Gilbert Gordon Oval in Woodend. “We will make improvements to the Senior Citizens Centre and Recreation Reserve at Riddells Creek, purchase land for an All Abilities Playground in Romsey and support a community playground at the Botanic Gardens in Kyneton.

“We have also allocated $400,000 to the design and planning for an early years hub in Gisborne, and will contribute $1.5 million for shared use of an indoor sports stadium at the Gisborne Secondary College,” he said. Hanging Rock Reserve and the adjoining East Paddock will receive $2 million in upgrades, including electricity and water reticulations, lighting, landscaping, shelters, roads, car parking, barbeques and tables. Council is also finalising a range of strategic documents which will influence future budgets, including an Open Space Strategy, Walking and Cycling Strategy and Waste Management Strategy. The draft budget proposes an average increase in rates and charges of 4.8%, which equates to $80 per year for a ratepayer living in a median valued property ($1,740 this year compared to $1,660 last year). This would be a typical bill for someone living in a house valued at $445,000, with a weekly garbage, green waste and recycling collection. This is Council’s seventh consecutive rate increase that has remained below 5%. In the seven year period before that, the average rate increase was 7.4%. Council’s Chief Executive Officer; Peter Johnston, said that the budget process had involved a careful allocation of resources, in the face of rising operating costs. “When resources are limited, they must be very carefully allocated so that Council can continue to achieve its objectives and deliver services to the community. “Increases in electricity, fuel and insurance costs have been factored into the budget, including the fire services levy which applies to all Council—owned land,” said Mr Johnston. continued on page 24

Janet Pearce – Medecins Sans Frontieres, Woodend Neighbourhood House In 1994, Janet Pearce was a young Aussie spending a year back—packing around Africa after taking a break from her nursing job in London. She arrived in Nairobi to see the horrific television footage of the genocide unfolding in Rwanda. Without hesitation she went to the local Medicins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) office to volunteer. Doctors without Borders, is a French founded non—government humanitarian organisation, providing medical treatment in trouble spots all over the world. Four days later Janet found herself in a Hercules plane flying into Kigali, capital of Rwanda. Janet would spend the next four and a half months caring for survivors at a large Saudi built hospital in Kigali. This brand new hospital had previously been virtually unused. peacekeepers patrolled the fence line. A short training course in Amsterdam gave her a much needed respite before her next six month deployment to the border refugee camps in Tanzania. In total five hundred thousand Rwandan refugees were camped here seeking shelter. Here she worked with Jacques de Groot, a Dutch Doctor she had met in Amsterdam who was to become her future husband. Janet says these experiences totally changed her perspective on life. “Nothing really surprises me; I know people are capable of pretty much anything”. Janet doesn’t say this in any way to be dramatic. She states it simply as a fact. She returned feeling “determined l would never take anything for granted. l realised how lucky l was.” After living in The Netherlands for a few years, and the birth of their eldest son, Janet and Jacques came to Australia in the year 2000. With a growing family, Janet’s volunteering over the next few years became centred on their three children. She was involved with many different Woodend committees during this time including, Playgroup, the Toy Library and the Netball Association as a committee member and a coach. Janet had also been involved with the Natural Gas Alliance which campaigned to bring natural gas connection to Woodend. In 2009, Janet became involved with the Neighbourhood House; and has been Chair of the Committee of Governance since 2011. Janet is very passionate about the Neighbourhood House because of its wide accessibility to all members of the community, and the strong emphasis on self—help, support, education and the positive community bonds that are built. Janet is very grateful to our local Council for giving her the opportunity to participate in the Loddon Murray Community Leadership Program. The term has just started, with that very short week immediately after the holidays some courses have delayed their start date until May. Check out the Term Two brochure you may have received in last month’s star, or have a look at our website – www. woodendnh.org.au A couple of brand new courses have come through as late entrants (they missed our brochure). Anita Triado is taking a Beginners Italian class starting Wednesday 7th May from 10am–11am. It’s an eight—week course; cost is $160 for the term. She is seeking motivated, language—loving beginners, a new language is hard to learn at the best of times but in adulthood it is much trickier. Maybe you have Italian heritage and want to build on your childhood memories or you are thinking of taking the trip of a lifetime and want to be able to make yourself understood. We are also hosting Rosie Berenyi—Mansell and her Chocolate Making workshop on Saturday 10th May from 1.30– 3.30pm – a delicious way to spend your afternoon and at $35 a great deal (you do take home chocolates and get to eat some while you are there). New courses for this term also include our Sewing for Beginners. We have had so many people asking for basic dressmaking courses over the time I have been here, well here it is! Starting Wednesday 23rd April (though we will hold out for a couple of weeks to get a class together) from 1–3pm, Sue Hill, an experienced seamstress and sewing teacher, will take you through the basics and onto simple pattern sewing before the end of term. The cost for the term is $170 (if it starts later in the term the price will be adjusted accordingly). Contact the house 5427 1845 to ask about any of our courses advertised in this month’s Woodend Star and to offer your talents to run a course, start an interest group or support group, build an action group or volunteer at the House. Finally, I’d like to welcome Angela Van Dam to the position of Administration Officer at the House. Angela has been busy volunteering with a number of community groups around Woodend and district over the last couple of years and we are delighted that she will bring her energy, expertise and talents to the House as well. Budget and Council
Council has finished it’s budget deliberations and will be releasing the draft council plan and budget next week. Thank you to all of you who wrote early to allow us to Cr. Jennifer Anderson, consider things you felt were Macedon Ranges Shire Councillor important. There were some wonderful ideas, and some that may not have made the draft this year will be investigated during the year and possibly considered in the 2015/16 financial year. Please inspect the draft budget and council plan on the website or at council offices, and get your submissions in by the due date via the process explained on the website, at offices, and in the local papers. Remember to look for things you would like to see done and things that we are planning that you may think should take lesser priority in your mind. We like getting submission in support of what we have chosen also. All submissions need to go to the specified address, but you can copy in councillors, or ring us to discuss further if you wish. It is a large document, so you may consider breaking it down into what actions you would like to see council take( the plan), what core services you think should be provided( capital works— footpaths, building maintenance etc), and what new projects council is considering ( new initiatives). There is also the fees and services section if you have an interest in fines and community service fees such as hall hire and permit applications. We have tried to keep rates and bor rowing as low as possible, whilst continuing to provide essential services. If you wish to talk about your submission at a special council meeting then let us know at the time you write to us. Even if having your say does not change the current budget it will still let council know what you see as important, and may mean it is considered in the future. Council works for the community, so we need to know whether you feel we have prioritised things to best serve the community with our limited funds. Chasing the Memories – a run for Alzheimers
A Son, a Brother, an Uncle, a Husband, a Friend, a Father, a Grandfather. At the age of 72 Gunther Franzen, a local resident was diagnosed with Lewy body disease together with Alzheimer’s. He has always been a fit healthy man— in his youth was a local hero for his soccer team in Germany. Later in Australia, married with 3 children, he took up running and in the late 70’s and early 80’s he ran the BigM Melbourne Marathon (Frankston to Melbourne) 4 times. As part of his training he ran from home in Plenty to work in Preston, as a child his daughter Sylvia found this distance inconceivable.
Sylvia, now an adult, is training to run a half marathon in Gunther’s honour. Running with Macedon Ranges Running Club for just over a year now, Sylvia along with 7 other members from the Woodend branch are training for The Age Run Melbourne 21.1km half marathon on 27th July. The “Chasing the Memories” team are raising funds for Alzheimer’s Australia (Victoria) to fund vital research into dementia. Researchers are currently investigating different areas such as: causes of dementia, medication that may modify or slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, long term care, support for carers, genetic factors and risk reduction. In Victoria 69,000 people have dementia with 56 new cases diagnosed every day. Victoria is currently facing a dementia epidemic. In 2013, there are around 75,000 people living with dementia in Victoria. This number is projected to increase to almost 246,000 by 2050, unless there are medical breakthroughs. With these numbers in mind the likelihood of you knowing someone who has dementia or are a carer to a sufferer of dementia are high. Sylvia says “I’m using The Age Run Melbourne half marathon to push beyond my comfort zone, take up this challenge and raise funds to support Alzheimer’s Australia. In 2014, Macedon Ranges Shire Council together with Woodend Library will ‘yarnbomb’ the area outside the Woodend Community Centre. Come to the Library to knit, weave or crochet your own piece of community art. The project will be unveiled during the Woodend Winter Arts Festival over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, 7–10 June. Plans are also taking shape for Woodend crafters to knit and crochet for the ANZAC 2015 ’5,000 Poppies’ commemorative project. National Simultaneous Storytime, 21 May Every year, Woodend Library participates in National Simultaneous Storytime as part of this week. This is an important annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Across the country, an Australian picture book is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre—schools, childcare centres and family homes. The book chosen for this year is Too many elephants in this house written by Ursula Dubosarsky and illustrated by Andrew Joyner. The ladies of St Mary’ Guild invite you to join them for their annual knitting bee on Wednesday, 4 June from 11am to 2.30pm in The Norma Richardson Hall. The ladies will be knitting squares and sewing them into blankets for the homeless. Over the past 10 years the Guild has donated over 300 double blankets – that’s a lot of squares! 2014 is the centenary of the commencement of World War I. For those families who have ancestors who fought in WWI buried at Woodend, a commemorative poppy tile has been produced by the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, in partnership with the RSL. These self—adhesive tiles are available for purchase through the RSL. If you have purchased a tile and would like it affixed to your ancestor’s headstone or cremation niche at the Cemetery, please contact the Trust for assistance. The Trust was recently successful in attaining a Councillor Grant, which has gone towards the restoration and framing of the original 1890 hand—coloured plan of the Cemetery. The project has been supported by the Macedon Ranges Shire Council, and we thank them for their assistance. Added to this we were successful in being awarded a Grant from the Dept of Health for the replacement of the main waterline through the cemetery. Works to complete this project are anticipated to be completed shortly. Did you know? The oldest person buried at the Cemetery is Patrick Mahony, aged 109. Patrick was born in 1779 in Ireland and died in Woodend on 30 August 1888. As always, we rely on the support of our small group of volunteers, who we thank for giving up a few hours of their spare time each month. Would your children be interested in being a CFA Junior volunteer? We have recently had several enquiries about forming a CFA JUNIORS Program at the Woodend CFA. The CFA has over 250 Junior Brigades across Victoria. Young people aged between 11–15 years old can join CFA as junior members through the Junior Volunteer Development Program. When juniors turn 16 they can apply to become senior members of their brigade. Junior Brigades provide a range of safe, enjoyable and challenging activities for young people. There is no cost to join and most activities are free. All junior members will receive their own polo shirt, hat and set of overalls. Activities include team building, practical skills, fundraising, first aid, community service, sporting and social activities and excursions. Junior Brigades are all about fun, friendship, belonging, volunteering, responsibility, challenges, teamwork, leadership, skill development, community spirit, commitment and firefighting skills. Junior volunteers also participate in regular brigade activities such as presentation nights, brigade meetings and also have the opportunity to compete in junior firefighting championships. If we receive enough positive response, we will get the wheels in motion. While we attend most of our bush, grass and scrub fires over the warmer months, the CFA attends more structural fires (such as houses and sheds) in the cooler months. This is the time when people start using their fires, heaters and electric blankets again. One of our common winter calls is to a chimney fire, where the heat from the fire below has actually ignited ash and debris that is lodged in the chimney. It is therefore wise to regularly check, and even have your chimney or flue cleaned. A winter fire plan is also important. A recent survey indicated that more than 25% of children did not know what to do if a fire broke out in their home. Have you discussed an evacuation procedure with your family in case of a house fire? Have you discussed with your children how to safely exit a building by crawling low in smoke? Have you organised a meeting place outside to know that everyone is safe? How to check and clean smoke alarms? Do you have fire extinguishers or fire blankets? Tennis is back in Woodend
The Woodend Tennis Club’s hardworking committee are delighted to see the completion of its largest project to date. The new court surfaces are something all members and the community can enjoy and will stand the club in good stead for years to come. Marcus Wills Pro Tennis is now coaching at Woodend Tennis Club. Marcus has over 20 experience and is a fully qualified Victorian Tennis Club Professional. Marcus coaches a number of different programs including Hot Shots, Tennis in Schools, Adult lessons, Group lessons, Private lessons and students with disabilities. Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) Year Ending 31 March 2014 Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) arises when a payment is provided to an employee or their associate in a different, often non monetary, form to salary or wages. Macedon Ranges Basketball Association
On March 29th our under 12 C grade team played an exciting grand final against Bulldogs 3 at Boardman Stadium in the Sunbury Basketball Association. The Bulldogs side had beaten our Woodend Hawks team once during the regular season, though the Hawks managed to get a win over them in the first semi— final by 4 points to find our place in the grand final. So the stage was set for a real nail-biter and we expected it to be a very close game. Our boys started the game very strongly right from the tip-off, with some great early points followed by impressive

full-court press defense. Heading up the press were Hayden Clune and Cameron Corry-Thomas who put the Bulldogs ball handlers under a lot of pressure, and helped cause turnovers. Fergus Connor and Xavier Tadd both did an amazing job pulling down rebounds, playing some great defense throughout the game. Jasper Dillon did a great job scoring some early points in the first half, and finishing with 5 points for the game, to give us a half-time lead of 18 points to 6. The second half saw our boys continue to run hard, play great defense and share the ball around – not giving the Bulldogs a chance to get back in the game. Ryder Blizzard played with his usual high energy, helping with some great steals, finishing the game with 5 points. Max Rivers was a very strong performer, pulling down rebounds, playing great defense as well as scoring 6 points in the second half to finish with 10 points for the game. Jack Hassett was a standout performer on the day, finishing with 14 points, plenty of assists, rebounds and a few very nice blocked shots. The final score for the game –Woodend Hawks:39, defeating Gisborne Bulldogs: 13 points – so it was an amazing win. The boys played the game of their lives to help record the first premiership for Woodend Hawks in the Sunbury competition. Thanks to Josh Forde and Will Oswin who played with the team throughout the season, including a memorable game for both players in the last of the regular season against Bulldogs 5. Our apprication also goes to Maxine Corry –Thomas for a job well done as our team manager for the season. Hopefully this is the first of many premierships for the Woodend Hawks! Book Launch: In Search of Ashbourne – A history of early Ashbourne in the Macedon Rranges by Jane Holth Saturday 12th April saw the former Ashbourne Catholic Church bursting at the seams as locals and past residents of Ashbourne gathered for the launching of a new Heritage Society publication In Search of Ashbourne – A history of early Ashbourne in the Macedon Rranges by Jane Holth. Jane moved to Ashbourne in 1989 and explains in her introduction how her fascination with the district began. “I was intrigued with the little dilapidated building in the paddock next to our property. As I came to meet locals who had lived in the area

since the 1930s, in particular Bill and John Hickey, Ron Kellett and Graham Thiele, I learnt that Ashbourne had once been a busy little hamlet and that the old building was formerly a Catholic church and a school.” Sobering tales emerged of priests who travelled out from Woodend on foot or in a horse and gig, and held services in the church for those of a religious bent. Other memories of the church focused on the dances held there several times a year where families had a rollicking good time and staggered home at dawn. Judging by the amount of broken china and glass we have found under the church, the tales of revelry are not exaggerated.” Woodend & District Heritage Society President, Jannyse Williams welcomed over a hundred people to the old building, and Jane thanked the many page 38

people who had contributed stories and photographs for inclusion in the book. Bill Hickey then took the microphone to describe the events that once took place in the old Church and passed on fascinating memories of the families who had been — and in many cases still are — part of the Ashbourne community. Susie Spence then completed the formal part of the proceedings with a delightful reading of Denis Fitzgerald’s poem “Old Time Dances at Ashbourne” Judging by the size of the gathering and the constant ripple of voices while afternoon tea was being served, this sense of community still exists and to all intents and purposes, the afternoon took on the quality of a real “back to” and reunion. As more and more stories were recalled and shared, it became obvious that there were still more tales to be told.
A further book is a real possibility.
