CEO’s MESSAGE Ross Anderson

15 Years young - and we've never been stronger! What an amazing rollercoaster ride the past 10 months have been for me, since taking over the reins of the Six Nations from Ms, Judith Kennedy. The Six Nations Wine Challenge is unique – it is unlike any other international or domestic wine show. We work closely with six wine judges who are the leading wine critics, wine writers and wine journalists from their respective countries. They select their top 100 wines and by invite, we reach out to these selected wineries and ask them to participate on behalf of their country. Christopher Waters – our Canadian Judge sums it up beautifully when he says “…it’s not a case where wineries can enter all of their wines, in the hope of getting some notoriety and reaching the podium. It’s a case where we are actively seeking out the best wines from our countries and bringing them into this room to compete against each other.” This sets an incredibly high benchmark by which all 6 competing nations can measure their own success. Any upsets to report? - you bet! Canada nearly pulled the biggest upset by winning the Shiraz Trophy – it was a close call. In their second year as part of The Six Nations, Canada

2017 saw Patrick Comiskey join the Judging team representing America - Patrick slotted into the role perfectly and did a fantastic job with his selections –

With less than 48 hours to go before departing Johannesburg, our South African Judge and Chairman for 2017, Michael Fridjhon had an accident resulting in a broken shoulder that required immediate surgery. Thankfully Michael had already done all the hard work with his selections, was not seriously injured and Huon Hooke - Australia's Judge stepped back into the Chairmans seat.

thank all of our valued sponsors, with special mention to NSW Liquor Logistics, Mainfreight Logistics (Aus & NZ), Aspiring Logistics (South Africa) & Manjits Total Event Management – your ongoing assistance and support is greatly appreciated. I also wish to thank the amazing team of helpers who share the vision I have – in particular Ania Smolec in Santiago, Tarryn Vincent & Motti Lewis in Cape Town, Cameron Couper in Auckland, Chris Rose in Sydney and a number of others who offer their input and time whenever its needed. We hope to have some exciting news for the 2018 season - with Argentina potentially poised to return to the fold. Congratulations to all competing companies for having been selected into this most prestigious Challenge.

2017 Six Nations Wine Challenge

CHAIRMAN’s MESSAGE From Huon Hooke

It should be Michael Fridjhon writing this, but Michael unfortunately could not attend this year’s judging due

to an accident. He did as usual select the 100 South African entries however, and we look forward to his return next year. As a result of Michael’s late withdrawal, we judged with five judges rather than six. And there was a new face at the table in the person of Patrick Comiskey, who very capably took over as the USA’s representative Judge. It was our first competition with new owner Ross Anderson

running the show, and things ran as smoothly as ever, with founder Judith Kennedy occasionally peering over his shoulder. Shiraz was one of the strongest classes. I noted a remarkable number of spicy wines, including some with evident use of whole-bunch, mostly to their benefit. Sparkling was a strong class with many fine wines, and many styles being rewarded – rosés, blanc de blancs and blends; young and mature wines, vintage and non-vintage. The Other Reds (Full Bodied) class was also strong, and a great pleasure to judge. It was diverse in varieties and

“80 years of winemaking, “80 years ofpursuit winemaking, uncompromising of quality” uncompromising pursuit of quality”

styles, and loaded with interest. Zinfandel in particular excelled, which is probably a good sign for the USA. (At time of writing I have no knowledge of the results, except that both the trophy winner and runner-up in this class were zins.) Other varieties to excel were cinsault, durif, malbec, montepulciano and tempranillo. White blends on the other hand was not a strong class. It is a pity there have to be winners and losers: Chile this year did not score any trophies, but at the time of writing, the identities of the class winners (determined on

We do however know the trophy results: New Zealand again topped the trophy list with six, USA scored four and Australia, South African and Canada scored two each. Arguably, inordinate importance is attached to these

trophies, whereas the aggregate scores – based on the gold and double-gold medals won – are a more meaningful measure of the performance of each country. All will be revealed on October 11!

Finally, I encourage you all, in your respective countries, to spread the word about the Six Nations Challenge. It is a worthwhile - indeed unique - testing ground for fine wine.

Tradition of Excellence

L’Ecole N° 41 is a second generation, family-owned artisan winery located in the historic Frenchtown School depicted on our label. Founded in 1983, we are the third oldest winery in the Walla Walla Valley. We have become one of the most prominent and visible Walla Walla Valley wineries with national and international distribution.

lecole.com

As a traditional brick and mortar winery, L’Ecole is engaged in growing and making 100% of our wines. Our focus is on terroir-driven, distinctive, and expressive wines, achieved by over 30 years of experience with dedicated, long-term relationships with some of the oldest and most proven vineyards in the Walla Walla and ColumbiaValleys.
