he other day, I held a friend’s baby, and my old tricks came back to me in what felt like a rush of muscle memories. All of sudden I was gently swooshing her through the air, my new toy airplane; then we were waltzing to music that only existing in my mind; and, in the end, she was so generous with her drool, I felt it was only fitting that we played peek-a-boo with my shirt. As the experience, with its joys and aches, reminded me, I’m no longer a new parent—my children are 14 and 10—but still I love bonding with infants and toddlers. That will probably be evident to you should we meet here at the New York Baby Show—and we just might. I’m the guy with the big bushel of graying hair who will be walking up and down the show’s long corridors non-stop for two days, trying to be helpful to parents while catching up with exhibitors, some who are beginning to feel like old friends I see at the annual reunion. And you know what? I love it. I love seeing all of you so excited to be here, so happy to get out of the apartment or house, so fundamentally interested in doing right by your children. May I offer one piece of advice? While you’re here at the Baby Show, take your time. Enjoy the vendors. Enjoy the demos. Enjoy the rest stations. You don’t have to see everything to see a lot. If you enjoy the experience, my hope is that you’ll let this be the start of your relationship with New York Family magazine, which produces the New York Baby Show. Time To Thrive A Renowned Child Expert Has Written A Wonderful Guide To The Toddler Years By Kristin Tablang

Tovah P. Klein, PhD, is a child psychologist and the director of the internationally renowned Barnard College Center for Toddler Development. She spends five days a week pondering, observing, studying, and interacting with 50 individual toddlers (kids ages 2-5) and teaches undergraduate and graduate students at Barnard about tots. Her advice has appeared in The New York Times, Redbook, Parents, and numerous other publications. She’s also a developmental adviser for “Sesame Street,” and the mother of three boys. Her latest book, How Toddlers Thrive: What Parents Can Do Today for Children Ages 2-5 to Plant the Seeds of Lifelong Success, explores and explains the working of the toddler brain. According to Klein, the toddler years are among the least studied in childhood research, despite the fact that they are some of the most crucial when it comes to cultivating a child’s potential for future success. In the first half of the book, Klein dissects the latest scientific findings in the field to prove that the toddler years are indeed when a child’s neural pathways that are necessary for thriving in life are set. Klein aims to explain the reasoning behind toddlers’ often perplexing 30

behavior, ultimately hoping to arm parents with the ability to view the world from their toddler’s point of view. She tackles topics such as the “Toddler Paradox”—how toddlers can flip-flop so quickly from wanting to be fiercely independent, to acting like a temperamental, helpless baby. She chiefly stresses the importance of developing skills such as resilience, self-regulation, self-reliance, and empathy. In the book’s second half, Klein reveals an adaptable set of methods parents can utilize to decipher—and manage—toddler behavior, from how to handle specific challenges such as eating, sleeping, and toilet training, to broader notions like managing change and sharing. To dig deeper into the world of toddlers, we caught up with Klein about some of the central topics and themes in her most recent book! In what ways are the toddler years the most crucial time period for developing a child’s ability to thrive and succeed later on in life? What skills are particularly important to develop during this time? Tovah Klein: The toddler years are a time of incredible, rapid change. There is the most rapid brain development happening, a child is acquiring language, physical, and thinking skills and experiencing new, intense emotions. Some of these [first-time] emotions [include] particularly anger but also pride and shame. The toddler is also moving out in the world

Don’t ever shame them for what they are feeling, no matter how ridiculous you think their reason for the tantrum was. Instead, give them a hug, label the upset as just that, and remind them that you love them. What’s the most common misconception about toddlers? TK: That they are intentionally out to get the parent. That they are “manipulative”—as in, they are pre-meditating ways to push our buttons. That is not the case. Toddlers are very much about figuring out who they are, and often they see us as standing in their way. They are only focused on their desire of the moment or what they need and will go head first to get that need met. What’s one thing you think parents do with good intentions that in actuality is harmful to their little ones?

and separating from the parent. This means they are developing a sense of who they are. They are curious and eager to discover the world. So all of this exploration, knowing that there is someone close by to turn to if they need help or comfort, or simply a check-in is what gives them a base. They are developing the sense of self—what they like and dislike, a sense of trust in others and confidence in their own abilities. They are slowly starting to know their emotions and importantly the beginnings of being able to handle those emotions (what we call regulation). The seeds of becoming independent later, of being able to both take care of themselves and be compassionate to others, are being laid down now. What’s the cause behind the stereotypical “toddler tantrum,” and what can a parent do to tame it—or avoid it altogether? TK: Tantrums don’t need to be avoided. They happen because sometimes the child is overwhelmed, and they don’t have the language to communicate or understand what they are feeling. There is a reason behind a tantrum, even if the adult has no idea what it is. They don’t have the brain development yet to handle the flood of emotion. They melt down. It is important for parents not see this as being bad and do all they can not to take it personally. Toddlers need us to stay calm when they are this upset. Our emotions affect them. So often we think our child’s behavior is a sign that we are not good parents, or the child is being disrespectful. That is not the case. If you are in a crowd, or a public place, best to remove the child to a calmer and quieter setting. Sometimes that is going into another room so they can calm down… The most important part is when the child calms.

TK: Parents worry that if they don’t show their toddler the right way to do things their child will never learn. But toddlers learn from trying things over and over, struggling through, and eventually figuring out. They have incredibly active curiosity and want to learn. Parents can intervene too often and correct their children or show them the “right” way to do things. This can actually make a toddler feel like they can’t do it, they don’t know how. They don’t trust themselves and feel ashamed of what they can’t do. Parents have good intentions, but it is better to back off and let toddlers try, stumble, and try again. Our role as parents is to help them through the frustration, rather than directing them to believe there is only one right way to do something. How do you indulge a toddler’s desires without ultimately creating a spoiled, entitled child? TK: Such a great question and an important one. Nearly every parent worries at some point that their child is becoming a brat. I understand why— toddlers can be very demanding. But recognizing your child’s desires does not mean giving in or meeting them on the spot every time. Empathy and recognition go a long way—everyone wants to be understood in their desire, even if it is not indulged. Toddlers especially need to be understood, and labeling their desire helps them manage it. This is how we begin to help our children handle disappointment as well (which is part of life forever!). So instead of saying: “How many times have I told you no cookies before dinner?” you can try empathy: “I know how much you love cookies, so I am going to put them on the counter so they are ready for after dinner!” Or: “You really wanted to play more at the playground, so tomorrow we are coming back!” Toddlers live in the moment, and one of our roles is to recognize that and help them move on. In other words, recognize a need or desire, but with limits.

Post-Natal Advice: Breastfeed! Unless you have a medical contraindication (and there are a few), breast is best for both mother and baby. Like all new things, it sometimes takes time to get things started, but don’t give up. Watching a baby thrive on breast milk is a powerful feeling for a mother and a wonderful way to bond. –Janet Stein, MD, Director of Obstetrics, Mount Sinai Beth Israel A fever (greater than or equal to 100.4 degrees) with or without malaise, abdominal pain, increased

bleeding, or breast tenderness is not normal. This can be a sign of a uterine (endometritis), breast (mastitis) or a wound infection (abdominal incision post cesarean section or vaginal laceration). Women must call their provider immediately when fever or other signs of infections are recognized, for the successful treatment of postpartum infection is time-dependent. Another serious problem in the postpartum period is the early identification of psychosocial issues. Postpartum blues are very common in the first few weeks after giving birth. Persistence of extreme mood changes or inability to function must be recognized by the family, the patient, and the provider. –Peter G. Putting ice packs on for the first 24 hours followed by warm soaks or sitz baths can help relieve the discomfort. –Joanne Stone, MD, Director, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Mount Sinai Hospital Rest at home leads to success in breastfeeding and helps the mother become a sane parent. When my patients leave the hospital I always warn them about well-meaning family members. Everyone wants to come by to visit the baby. Little children want to hold their newborn cousins, and all want to hear the story about the miracle birth. The mother needs to rest after her delivery. She needs to learn her baby’s routine. Family members should be told to keep their visits short. Rosie And Daron Pope Return To The New York Baby Show With Their New Line Of Baby Clothes And Plenty Of Parenting Advice By Mia Weber

One of the annual highlights of the New York Baby Show is the presence of maternity and parenting maven Rosie Pope. Last year, Rosie served as a spokeswoman and keynote speaker at the Baby Show, while her husband, Daron Pope, represented a dad’s perspective on the panel of parenting experts. Rosie and Daron graced New York Family’s April 2014 cover and are both expected to have prominent roles in the 2014 Baby Show. Originally, Rosie rose to prominence in the pregnancy and parenting realms with her eponymous maternity clothing line. She then gained national recognition with her Bravo series, “Pregnant in Heels,” in which she established her chops as a parenting adviser, a role she solidified with her MomPrep classes and book, Mommy IQ: The Complete Guide to Pregnancy. The big news this year is that Rosie recently launched a line of baby clothes (see sidebar) and is now the first-ever contributor to Amazon Mom, Amazon Baby, and Amazon Registry. As for the Baby Show, the Popes (who recently

welcomed their fourth child—a healthy baby girl) love coming because it lets them share their expertise directly with parents seeking answers to pressing parenting questions. “I really encourage people who are coming to learn about all the vendors and look at all the different gear, but also take advantage of the sessions they have. Just forget everyone else in the room and ask those questions that had you up at 1am searching on Google,” Rosie says. “Take those questions with you and get real answers. It’s an invaluable experience—it rarely happens, to have that many people in one spot who are going to answer your questions.” And Daron concurs, underscoring the educational aspect of the event. “Becoming a smart parent doesn’t happen in a post-graduate setting…so I think the New York Baby Show is a great opportunity to go meet products and companies and to talk to Rosie. We asked our March 2014 cover-mom, Daphne Oz, for a few pearls of wisdom on both maintaining wellness during pregnancy and dressing for a bump. How to Maintain Wellness During Pregnancy: Try to find a balance in your cravings. If you’re gunning for something sweet, see if the natural sugar found in an apple or other fresh fruit—or even a sweet potato—will suffice. If not, treat yourself to a small portion of whatever it is you’re really craving. Indulge for a good cause. Don’t cave for the junk that’s just going to satisfy you in the moment because it’s convenient, but is made from artificial ingredients or is a couple of days old. Treat yourself to something really fresh, decadent, and homemade! That way, you know exactly what is going into your body, and your little one’s. Drink more water than you thought humanly possible. When pregnant, your blood volume basically doubles, plus it’s doing the filtering work of two bodies, so you want to make sure you stay hydrated with plenty of water to help flush toxins away and provide plenty of fluid to move all the essential nutrients you’re eating to your baby. Sleep when you need to. It was really hard for me to get into the habit of napping, but I stopped being able to sleep well through the night, so I started making sure I’d sleep whenever my body felt it was the right time. That way, even if I could only get comfortable for six or so hours at night, I made up some time with a 30-minute—or two hour!—siesta in the afternoon. How to Dress for Pregnancy: Stay sexy. You don’t have to wear spandex all the time, but muumuus aren’t the only option either. Things that remind you of your femininity and changing shape are best. Remember, pregnancy is beauty, but it’s also pure power: you’re growing a human! So flaunt that incredible body with confidence. Don’t stock up on pregnancy clothes. By month five, I was happily enjoying my highwaisted, elastic band jeans, but I paired them with sweaters or blouses that I could also wear post-pregnancy. Patterns on top, solids on bottom. I’m a New Yorker, so black and neutrals are often my “color” of choice, but I like to get bright and colorful for “The Chew” I found the most flattering outfits to be the ones where I had a bright, fun pattern on top—not too busy—and then kept it sleek and simple in a muted tone or solid on bottom.

the new baby excuse As Her Newborn Turns Into A Toddler, One Mom Says “Good-Bye” To A Catch-All Justifier

My daughter turns 1 this spring, and though I’m excited to celebrate this milestone, there’s one thing I’m not looking forward to: Losing my “new baby” excuse. Until now, if I couldn’t remember something I should obviously know—like bringing my 4-year-old son’s snow pants to preschool so that he could go outside at recess—I could blame it on my mommy-brain. Missed my friend’s birthday? The constant sleep deprivation is eroding my memory. Still haven’t lost the baby weight? I gave birth just a few months ago! But now that my daughter is hitting the 12-month mark, I don’t have the fact that I brought a human being into the world mere months ago as an explanation for my failings. Sure, I’m still exhausted. But what parent isn’t? I’ve pretty much made it through the trenches of the first year (for the second time) and should be able to cope with the day-to-day demands of life again, right? This became obvious to me the other day when I was getting my hair done. I was seeing a new stylist I’d never been to before, and we were at that awkward moment where she quietly unfurls my hair, taking in all my imperfections while I watch wordlessly in the mirror. “When’s the last time you got your roots colored?” she asked, lifting up a handful of my limp, unwashed hair. “Um…a few months ago?” I ventured. “I have a new baby,” I added. “I can barely get out of the house!” It wasn’t until the stylist asked how old my kid was—“11 months,” I mumbled—that it dawned on me I don’t actually have a new baby anymore. I don’t have any baby. I have a toddler. Sigh. Things have changed. Now, if I’m 15 minutes late to an appointment and lugging a hyper 1-year-old, I don’t get the same looks of understanding I did when there was an infant nestled in my arms (even though the latter was easier). If I let the dishes pile up to a disturbing height in the sink, I can’t tell myself it’s because 48

I’m nursing around the clock and don’t have a minute to spare. When I’m secretly wearing my maternity sweatpants to the grocery store…well, that’s just because they’re comfortable. My daughter’s turning 1 and what I’m really thinking is: I have to get my act together. The good news is that things are getting easier. My daughter’s less fussy, more fun, and growing independent. She and my son can play together in the same room without me worrying she’ll be fatally injured. And she started sleeping through the night, which means my brain is starting to function again. I no longer wake up thinking: “How am I going to get through this day?” Now, I don’t feel that way until at least 10am. But, even with these major lifestyle improvements, I still can’t get myself to find the time or motivation to do certain things. Like the laundry. I find myself fantasizing that I live in a place like Downton Abbey, where everything from getting dressed to preparing one’s meal is done for you (then I realize, I do live in a place like Downton Abbey, only it’s my son and daughter who are being waited on…by me!). I guess what I’m realizing is this: Maybe it’s not having a baby (who, let’s face it, is not really a baby anymore) that’s holding me back from getting back into the swing of things. Maybe it’s me. Having a kid rocks your world, and it takes time to figure out how to take care of you, your newborn, and the rest of your family without freaking out on a daily basis. For some people, they adjust right away. For others, it takes longer. But when you finally do come up for air, life is there, waiting for you. And you just have to jump back in. Eventually, we all figure it out. Which is what I’m doing. I think I’m almost there. But in the meantime, I’ll hold off on those dirty dishes!
