Programs for Children in K–6
www.summerreading.org
Welcome to Summer Reading! Summer Reading is fun for children of all ages who want to keep their reading skills sharp over the summer vacation. Anyone can sign up: babies, preschoolers, kids, teens, and even adults. This year, there are lots of fun summer programs and activities planned at libraries in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. At the end of the summer, the top children and teen readers from each borough will earn a special chance to go to a Yankees home game, take a bow on the ball field, and meet a star player (last year’s top Summer Readers met Curtis Granderson).
Seward Park Library Thurs, June 7, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Come for a full line-up of activities, from readings and storytelling to animals and arts and crafts.
To sign up and get more information, visit www.summerreading.org, where you can also discover lots of exciting online summer-reading activities and rate the books you read. Don't miss this year's Summer Reading Kick-Off at Seward Park Library on June 7 (see schedule to the right). Or jump-start your summer of reading at one of the kick-off events at a neighborhood library near you. Turn the page for a full listing.
11:30 a.m. Meet Jeff Kinney, author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid The seventh book about Greg is due out in November, but its superstar creator makes a special visit to talk to his fans and give away some books. Hear what’s in store for your favorite wimp and his friends.
12:30 p.m. Birds of Prey See hawks, owls, falcons, and other species up close in this exploration of these winged wonders! Touch raptor artifacts. A lucky volunteer may even get to help. Presented by the New Canaan Nature Center.
12:30–2:30 p.m. Make Art with Michael Albert Try your hand at creating collages from cereal boxes. Michael Albert talks about his art, known as “Cerealism,” and his picture book, An Artist’s America, and demonstrates how to turn everyday packaging into original artwork.
2 p.m. Tales from the East Storyteller Robin Bady weaves a tapestry of tales from China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

www.summerreading.org Discovering the world through summer reading Meet Michael Pineda, a top 2011 Summer Reader from the Bronx
When Michael Pineda grows up, he wants to be an astronomer. Or an astronaut. Or a biologist. Or a zoologist. Or a train operator. These are just some of the many worlds the seven-year-old from the Van Cortlandt Park section of the Bronx discovered through books and reading during the Library’s Summer Reading program last year. In all, Michael read 262 books in three months, which made him NYPL’s top Summer Reader from the Bronx. Together with the other top Summer Readers, the budding bookworm was feted on the field at Yankee Stadium and got a chance to meet center fielder Curtis Granderson. “I was so proud of myself,” says Michael, who displays the ball that Granderson signed for him in his living room, near his usual piles of nearly 50 library books from the Van Cortlandt Library. “I got to see the Yankees and they won!”

“Because we didn’t go anywhere, he would just read one book after another,” she says. “He loved it. He loves finding out about new things.” In addition, Pineda says Michael loved logging on to www.summerreading.org to keep track of the books he read, review them, and read comments from other kids. He loves to read but has never liked writing, says Pineda. “Summer Reading made him like to write more too.”
TOP Michael, second from left, was feted on the field at Yankee Stadium last August along with other top Summer Readers from across the city. BOTTOM Before the game, Michael met center fielder Curtis Granderson and got an autographed ball.

Michael’s mom, Vernessa Pineda, says Summer Reading was a great way for Michael to spend his vacation exploring, even if the family didn’t have a chance to go away.

Susan Ng and Devlynn Chen are good friends— and even better readers. To earn their spots as last year’s top teen Summer Readers in Manhattan, Susan read 348 books and Devlynn read 150. Here, the 16-year-old Bronx Science students talk about their favorite writers and offer tips for this year’s readers. What do you like to read? Susan: Shoujo manga (Japanese comics and cartoons geared toward girls) and anything romance. Devlynn: Romance, but I love the classics too!
Devlynn Chen (left) and Susan Ng live on the Lower East Side and spend time at Seward Park Library.
All activites are for ages 12 to 18.
Who are your favorite authors? Devlynn: Mark Twain (The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is my favorite!). Susan: Alan Lawrence Sitomer [The Downside of Being Up, The Secret Story of Sonia Rodriguez].
Staten Island :: Dongan Hills Thurs, Jun 7; 2:30 p.m. Great Kills Thurs, Jun 7; 2:30 p.m. Huguenot Park Fri, Jun 8; 3 p.m. New Dorp Wed, Jun 13; 2:30 p.m. Port Richmond Thurs, Jun 7; 4 p.m. Richmondtown Thurs, Jun 21; 2 p.m. South Beach Thurs, Jun 7; 4 p.m. St. George Library Center Thurs, Jun 14; 2 p.m. Todt Hill–Westerleigh Thurs, Jun 14; 2 p.m. Tottenville Wed, Jun 13; 2:30 p.m. West New Brighton Wed, Jun 6; 3:30 p.m.
Summer Reading Finale Stop by your neighborhood library to celebrate Summer Reading 2012 and the last days of summer fun. Bronx :: Allerton Thurs, Aug 23; 4 p.m. Baychester Tues, Aug 28; 4 p.m. Belmont Thurs, Aug 23; 4 p.m. Bronx Library Center Fri, Aug 17; 2 p.m. Castle Hill Fri, Aug 10; 3 p.m. City Island Fri, Aug 17; 2 p.m. Clason’s Point Mon, Aug 27; 3:30 p.m. Edenwald Tues, Aug 28; 3 p.m. Francis Martin Mon, Aug 27; 4 p.m. Grand Concourse Fri, Aug 31; 3 p.m. High Bridge Thurs, Aug 23; 4 p.m. Jerome Park Fri, Aug 24; 2 p.m. Kingsbridge Fri, Aug 31; 4 p.m. Melrose Fri, Aug 31; 3 p.m. Morris Park Tues, Aug 28; 2 p.m. Morrisania Fri, Aug 24; 3 p.m. Mosholu Thurs, Aug 16; 3 p.m.
What’s your favorite thing about reading? Devlynn: Reading is like searching for an adventure. You can be in the middle of New York City on the train yet feel like Huck Finn did when he traveled down the Mississippi. Susan: In romance novels, I like how the characters interact with each other and how they talk about their feelings. Do you have any advice for this year’s Summer Reading participants? Susan: You don’t need to read 800 books, but just picking up a book and reading the back cover is a good start. Devlynn: Just do it! It’s actually fun!
