THE GLOBAL LEADERSHIP SCHOLARS PROGRAM AT NYU WASHINGTON, DC What kind of leader do you want to be? In NYU’s highly competitive Global Leadership Scholars Program, students learn how to practice ethical and inclusive leadership as they develop a heightened sense of self-awareness and purpose, practice creating change with peers, and learn how to collaborate with others to achieve results. According to the 2016 National Association of Colleges and Employers Job Outlook Survey, employers cite leadership skills and the ability to work as part of a team as the most important hiring criteria. Over the course of a fall or spring semester at the NYU Washington, DC, campus students in the Global Leadership Scholars Program prepare to assume leadership roles in the public and private sectors through course work, experiential learning, mentorship and coaching sessions, and cocurricular events. At the end of the semester scholars receive a certificate in leadership issued by the NYU Leadership Initiative.

NYU GLOBAL PROGRAMS

“Leadership is about uplifting others in a meaningful way that inspires them to pay it forward. The Global Leadership Scholars Program has shown me how important it is to work and behave in a way that supports your peers and their goals to build a better and stronger community.” ROXANNE ROMAN, 2017 NYU SHANGHAI

“My experience as a Global Leadership Scholar surpassed my wildest expectations. I have learned so much about leadership and have been able to actually apply it in my day-to-day life. I did not expect a course to completely change how I think. Now I constantly consider my core values and how I can implement leadership into my daily routine.” SYDNEY HIBBS, 2018 COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE

COURSE WORK

The core of the program is a multidisciplinary intensive course called The Meaning of Leadership. Students explore leadership in modern global society and examine ways to exercise leadership in their own lives. Through case studies, students gain an understanding of the diverse forms of leadership currently in practice around the world. As students perform simulations and collaborate on team projects, they build the skills necessary to be effective leaders capable of taking on challenges in any field. In addition to The Meaning of Leadership, scholars may also enroll in two to three additional courses in business, economics, journalism, politics, public policy, or other subjects related to their major in order to maintain a full-time course schedule.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

MENTORSHIP & COACHING

An internship or experiential learning placement is a requirement of the program. Washington, DC, offers countless opportunities for developing leadership and career skills, and staff at the NYU center provide guidance and support during the placement process. Some organizations where students have held internships in past years include the Council on Foreign Relations, the United States Conference of Mayors, the UN World Food Programme, the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities, the Supreme Court of the United States, the White House, the Women’s Foreign Policy Group, and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, to name just a few.

Before Global Leadership Scholars even arrive on campus, they have a one-on-one advising session to discuss their areas of interest and goals. This helps the NYU Washington, DC, staff match each student with internship opportunities and their locally based NYU alumni mentor. Scholars are paired with mentors who have similar academic backgrounds and career ambitions and, over the course of the semester, meet with them for informational interviews, job shadowing, and career advice.

“I did an internship at the Internet Society, which works on scenario plans to map out the multiple possibilities for the future of the internet so that individuals, governments, and businesses can be prepared. One of the highlights of my experience was the chance to sit in on interviews with some of the leading technical and academic experts in the field, and I even met some of the internet’s creators. Speaking with these pioneers has been a dream of mine and was an incredible learning experience.” GREYSON NEVINS-ARCHER, 2017 NYU TANDON SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING

“My alumni mentor has become a great adviser and resource for me, helping me think through the steps between now and law school.” BASTIAN SHAH, 2017 COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE

COCURRICULAR EVENTS

LIVING IN WASHINGTON, DC

As Global Leadership Scholars, and as students at the Washington, DC, academic center, students have unparalleled access to networking and educational opportunities. In previous years, scholars have attended forums on big data and criminal justice reform; networked with White House and congressional staffers over breakfast; participated in salon-style conversations with writers, musicians, and artists including Zadie Smith and Pat Metheny; and attended talks by leaders in the arts, business, diplomacy, law, and other fields, including former Vice President of the United States Joe Biden; Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Washington, DC, Caroline Vicini; and former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Gordon Brown. As they interact with trailblazers across many fields, scholars learn the meaning of leadership in the 21st century.

NYU Washington, DC, provides many opportunities for students to get involved and take on leadership roles. They can be elected to our Hall Congress and plan activities, create community engagement opportunities, and advocate for fellow students. Or, students can join DC Dialogues, a student-led initiative that brings together experts to talk about special topics, such as green business or the refugee crisis. They can sign up for exciting excursions that have included trips to the Newseum, performances at the Kennedy Center, concerts at the Verizon Center, professional sporting events, and receptions at one of our many embassies. Students often cite the academic center as a highlight of their experience. They live in modern apartmentstyle four-person suites with a shared bathroom and kitchen. A very limited number of studio apartments are also available. There are a variety of student lounges with computers, recreational equipment, and cable-access televisions as well as laundry facilities. A variety of other multipurpose spaces are equipped for studying or relaxing with friends and for individual meditation and reflection. Students receive a free gym membership and access to a bike-share program. A professional residential life staff lives on-site to provide guidance, support, and programming.
