COMMUNITY LIVING ROOM academic l studio 2 l public space l multi displinary

Location : Rachamankha, Chiang Mai - residential area

29

CONCEPT

multi accessibility + blurring interior-exterior space

Nowadays, Chiang Mai’s economy and tourism have expanded. This issue turns over most of city’s public space from citizens to tourist. Moreover, green space in the city is also being decreased. The growth of city and urban planning in a modern way effects citizen lifestyles and causes a fall of interaction among people, city then becomes less alive. Hence the public space for citizens to meet and socialize is the main objective of this project.

Steel ( H Column )

This project aims to function as a “living room” to support community’s activities and to increase green space which engages people with their neighbors and outdoor activities.

body move soul

BIRTH : THE MOVING OF SOUL CONCEPT In Buddhism, it is believed that our souls exist and vanish in every second. From this thought, I think about when we imagine or think about something. It is a feeling like our soul vanishes from where we are and exists in a new place where we are thinking about. For example; we are at home and thinking about going shopping at department store. This is show that our soul can be moving from place to place all the time. I present this idea by using lighting technique. We can see each object 2 places in one time; on the glass box surface and the real object, showing the idea that our soul can be existed and born from the thinking of mind.

concious level

stilmulated time

LIVING : CONCIOUS-UNCONCIOUS CONCEPT To perceive life or being, is to be conscious or be careful in every single movement. Normally, we do things unconsciously and we will be conscious and focus when something stimulates us. For example: when we are driving on a long way, we lose our carefulness and will be stimulated by the horn’s sound, sudden break or the traffic signal. From the idea of conscious and unconscious, the space is formed by 2 materials, which are concrete and glass to make differences between feelings of walking. The space have 4 stimulating point (conscious point) in all part of space. When users step on a glass floor, they will walk more carefully and get conscious that they are walking because in our mind glass is fragile and cannot contain much weight. Therefore, users will be careful and get notice they are walking or looking on the floor while using the space.

DEATH: THE NATURAL GRAVEYARD CONCEPT Death defines as the return to nature. Human is a combination of body and spirit.

NATURE OPEN DEATH

CONCRETE ENCLOSED LIVING

Human body is just a composition of natural substances. When spirit leaves the body (death), what left behind is just a pile of those substances which are ready to rot and disappear when the time goes by. In Thailand’s funeral, the dead body is cremated. After burning, smokes and ashes are remained. Smokes and ashes are carbon that trees around the area use in photosynthesis. This process is a clear representation of the word ‘death’ in a way of returning to nature.

The transition of space enclosed by concrete (entrance) to the opened space (graveyard) represents the moment of life from living to death. In addition, at the graveyard, trees are used instead of the tomb
