N I G EL BAR KER 1. Nigel your new web series on Adorama TV sounds very exciting. How did you get involved in the project? Every now and then the stars align and in this case I believe there’s a perfect storm brewing too! For many years I have wanted to create a reality competition show pitting photographers from all different practices against one another to see how each style of photography and photographer would match up, with the ultimate goal of finding the Top Photographer. Well when Adorama, the leading camera retailer in New York and a place that I have frequented since I first arrived in the City in the mid 90’s for all my professional camera needs, came to me with the hope of collaborating. I jumped at the opportunity. With Adorama’s years of experience servicing the world’s best shooters and their fabulous YouTube channel Adorama TV, half a million subscribers and growing, I knew this was the perfect place and time for a show like Top Photographer. As I mentioned I had dreamt of doing this for years but timing is everything in show business and photography and with the advent of social media there has never been a time in history when more people have an active interest in the art of photography and an appreciation for taking pictures. 2. It seems that web series like yours and Facebook live are creating new and exciting areas in media and entertainment. How has the process of working with a web series been different from working on a TV series? You are absolutely right. The process of working on a web series is so much more immediate and cutting edge. You are producing shorter, tighter and more information packed segments that are simultaneously freer and more authentic than scripted TV. Instead of shooting a series and having it come out on TV 6 months later and barely remembering what happened, the whole process is much more in real time with poignant and timely subject matter. Your crews are smaller which results in being more agile and flexible-a huge plus in a free flowing reality show.

definition. My work in fashion and beauty started over two decades ago as I made a transition from being a model myself to the other side of the lens. As a fashion photographer I concentrate on my subject and their personality, trying to evoke authentic emotions to create a believable image which resonates with the viewer and in turn makes them interested in the clothes or product the model is wearing etc. 4. Lastly, how has the process of judging a fellow photographer’s work been different from judging a model’s future for success? Actually I get asked to look at photographers portfolios on a daily basis through social media. One of the main things I look for is a signature look and style that identifies the photographer and helps them stand out. This is actually quite similar to picking out an upcoming new face in the modeling industry. I always try to be subjective and open minded about a style of creativity regardless of whether it appeals to me or not. It’s important to be polarizing as a creative if you want to be noticed. That doesn’t mean one has to be sensational or outrageous but you do need to create imagery that has a narrative that makes a viewer stop and ponder. 5. Any thing else you’d like to share? It’s been an extremely exciting and busy year with the launch and opening of the DogPound, a fabulous new gym in Soho that I have been a founder member and investor. I also recently became the Artistic Director of a new menswear line called Flag & Anthem where I will be utilizing both my photographic eye and interest in men’s fashion to help shape the collections. And in another twist I became the Global Brand Ambassador for AC Hotels by Marriott, shooting their national advertising campaigns, curating the hotel libraries, hosting opening events and much more. One thing is for certain, being a photographer in this day and age means thinking outside the box if you really want to be on top.

3. Aside from fashion or beauty photography, is there another genre of photography that speaks to you? I have always been a portrait photographer by

THE BRAND

THE BUSINESS

August was conceived as a reinvention of classic swimwear over the decades, and is based on the belief that the most sensual part of a woman is her confidence. Inspired by the cultures and spirit of Brazil and New York, August’s creative lenses combine NYC’s style with Brazil’s sensuality and joie de vivre. The result is a unique and refined expression that passes through the modern and goes to the bold. With dynamic arts and soft tones, intricate stitching and clean lines, August’s style is crafted with careful contrasts that seek to capture the spirit and style of the modern and versatile woman.

August’s idea was born in New York in 2013 and grew through the efforts of its founders: Brazilian model and creative director Gabriela Rabelo and Scandinavian strategist and brand director Teke Busk. Based in New York, and with extensive international experience, both collaborated to create the product, brand and market that bring a renewed global perspective to the beach fashion scene. From cuts to designs, from brand to design, from suppliers to production, the goal has always been to reinvent and enhance each component as much as possible, thus creating a company that is inspired by the past and yet keeps its vision focused on the future.

RENEE GARNES Makeup Artist Renee Garnes shares her five favorite products Renee Garnes works with some of the industry’s leading talent. Painting the faces of Naomi Campbell, Chanel Iman, Jourdan Dunn, Kelly Rowland, Zoe Kravitz, Lion Babe and Golden Barbie.

YVES SAINT LAURENT’S TOUCHE ECLAT This golden pen is an essential in my makeup kit, whether I’m on set or getting my girls ready for a red carpet event. It conceals those dark under eye circles and highlights the area with just the right amount of coverage.

LAURA MERCIER’S SECRET BRIGHTENING POWDER FOR UNDER EYES This lightweight powder is my absolute favorite Laura Mercier product. Not only is it lightweight, but it sets your under eye concealer with the perfect amount of coverage leaving your under-eye looking fresh and bright! The best part is that its perfect for any skin tone. I don’t leave the house without it.

NARS’S VELVET MATTE LIP PENCIL These jumbo lip pencils are a kit staple! They come in vibrant colors that give your lips a long lasting matte yet creamy finish. The crayon makes for easy touch ups on set and that long-lasting red carpet look.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY’S LEGENDARY LASHES MASCARA IN BLACK VINYL This mascara gives you those luxurious long lashes with just one coat. If you want to get that falsh lash affect without the false lashes this is your go to! ARDELL LASHES IN DEMI WISPIES My go to lashes to finish any look. They’re not only easy to apply, but for a reasonable cost, they give you that Hollywood glam look ready for any red carpet, or night out on the town!
