On the Cover Valerie Sparks A finalist for the William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize, Valerie Spark’s cover piece, Le Vol 1 is digitally pieced together from photographs the artist has taken from around the world. The birds were photographed from the Vienna and La Rochelle Natural History Museums. Sparks explains the work’s title, “The French term ‘le vol’ translates as flight, flying, theft or burglary. For the birds in this work, life and flight have been stolen and yet reanimated by the taxidermist. Whereas collecting practices have changed dramatically, the work raises questions about early collecting practices as acts of theft.”

Celebrating Erwin Fabian’s 100th Birthday One of Australia’s most significant living sculptors, Erwin Fabian, celebrates his 100th birthday this November. An impressive milestone but one that hasn’t seen the artist slowing down, with him still practicing as a sculptor.

To celebrate this momentous birthday, Australian Galleries Melbourne hosts an exhibition of Fabian’s latest pieces in ‘Recent Sculpture’.

Represented by Robin Gibson Gallery, the artist’s ‘Recent Sculpture’ exhibition was first shown in May this year and travels to Melbourne.

Predominantly working with scrap, rusted metal, Fabian transforms these raw, often industrial pieces by bending them into meaningful sculptures, with a new identity that borrows from nature in its organic forms.

Born in Berlin in 1915, the son of painter Max Fabian, he left for England in 1938, interned and then was deported to Australia in 1940 on the Dunera troopship. But it wasn’t until 1962 that he held his first exhibition of sculpture at the Hung Horse Gallery in Sydney. Having worked for over half a century, Fabian’s work has refined over the years and grown in intensity, while retaining a strong aesthetic. His sculptures although figurative, open a conversation with the viewer, connecting on a human and emotive level.

21 Artists to Celebrate 21 Years Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre (CPAC, Liverpool, Sydney) is throwing itself a 21st birthday, with a group exhibition the icing on its birthday cake. The Western Sydney artistic hub has invited 21 contemporary artists – both promising local emerging artists, and highly respected Australian artists who have shown at CPAC during its formative years – to present new and existing works. ‘21’ reflects on the great careers of these artists as well as looking toward the future of the arts in Western Sydney.

Exhibiting artists include: Gordon Bennett, Vivienne Burns, Daniel Boyd, David Capra, Peter Cooley, Rosie Deacon, Christine Dean, Mikala Dwyer, Fiona Foley, Franck Gohier, Claire Healy and Sean Cordeiro, Deborah Kelly, Richard Larter, Dani Marti, Angelica Mesiti, Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran, Raquel Ormella, Khaled Sabsabi, Gina Sinozich, Savanhdary Vongpoothorn and Judy Watson.

Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre Director, Kiersten Fishburn says, “As the principal artistic centre for South West Sydney, Casula Powerhouse is committed to presenting the best contemporary arts practice within the context of the cultural diversity of our region. It is wonderful to welcome back so many of the artists that exhibited here early in their careers, many involved from the very beginning. Exhibition Previews Monster Pop!

Monsters come in varying guises, the snake-headed woman, the giant at the end of the beanstalk, the bunyip in the creek, the boogeyman under the bed and the modern-day politician. ‘Monster Pop!’, an exhibition of contemporary Australian and Indonesian artists, embraces them all. A group exhibition, at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, it features thirteen artists, who find the idea of monsters, or the monstrous entering their works in different ways.

A cross-cultural examination of all the creatures and creations lurking in the mind and popular culture, the exhibition mixes mediums and styles.

There are traditional shadow puppets, an inflatable head sculpture, self-portraits, photographs and street art, all sitting side by side. Curators Andy Ewing and Fiona Carter had a strong vision of the artists and works they wanted to include. Ewing explains, “We had a clear idea for our initial proposal, but decided to hone it on our visit to Indonesia and let the Indonesian artists begin the discussion. We refined it to artists ‘exploring monsters and or the monstrous, be it political, emotional, psychoanalytical and/or literal, who also refer to popular culture.’ This way we could remain open in selecting works, and allow the exhibition to say many things.”

The pair wanted a mix of established and emerging artists and also wanted to spark a dialogue between the two countries, showcasing what links, and separates them. “There is an attention to the uneven distribution of resources, cultural traditions fading or changing or reigniting in the social media age,” says Ewing. “Australian artist Rodney Glick worked with traditional Balinese carvers, who usually do very fine Hindu deities. Rodney would show them photoshopped images of suburban people with six arms, like Kali Yuga, and work with them to realise the forms.

Reko Rennie worked with 11 artists in Yogyakarta [for Warriors Come Out To Play], on an Asialink residency, to make a road trip video work, with an Indonesian punk soundtrack. Gender politics and queering identities are also common to both in this instance.”

While Ewings has a soft spot for all of the works, there’s one that speaks to him, Indieguerillas’ animation Banyan Tree Lounge. Indieguerillas, made up of Yogyakarta artists, and couple Santi Ariestyowanti and Dyatmiko “Miko”Bawono, attempt to revitalise a Javanese folk tale about ghosts under the Banyan Tree. “They designed these contemporary funky reinterpretations of ghosts and deities, and used a traditional music structure, but digitally made to sound contemporary, to reignite interest in stories that they feel are dying out in one generation, due to Indonesian young people’s interest in social media, says Ewing. “A kind of collective cultural amnesia is taking hold, and I like that contemporary artists are rising up to take that on.”

The Greats: masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland

Jo Darvall Paris bled into the Indian Ocean

Part of the Sydney International Art Series, ‘The Greats: masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland’ is an extraordinary and richly presented showcase of some the world’s most revered old master paintings and drawings.

‘Paris bled into the Indian Ocean’ explores a number of past events connecting the O’Connor family across generations. Using a paradigm of thoughts and questions, Darvall distils this into one of her most ambitious exhibitions to date. The exhibition is influenced by Kathleen O’Connor’s story as she returned home to Western Australia from France in 1955.

Spanning a period of 400 years from, the Renaissance to Impressionism, the exhibition includes works by some of the great names of Western art, including: Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael, Titian, Rubens, Velázquez, Poussin, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Turner, Monet, Degas, Gauguin, and Cézanne.

Comprising over 70 works, all but two will be seen in Australia for the first time, including Botticelli’s, The Virgin adoring the sleeping Christ child.

Darvall says that she want’s to breathe new life into old stories and to “…question whether we changed that much, the way the public treats people with visionary ideas and our cultural heritage.” ‘Paris bled into the Indian Ocean’ serves as an opportunity to represent and celebrate the determination of creative women in the early to mid 1900s.

Andrew Sayers A lens of clear air

Modern Love: The Lives of John and Sunday Reed

Late artist Andrew Sayers has produced a series of paintings distilled from notes and memories of three decades living and working in the nation’s capital, as well as time spent on the south coast of New South Wales.

Celebrating the launch of a double biography of the same title, the exhibition ‘Modern Love’ will explore the unconventional marriage of Heide founders John and Sunday Reed, champions of modernism and catalysts for successive generations of Australian artists and writers.

Andrew was director of the National Museum of Australia from 2010 to 2013 and the inaugural director of the National Portrait Gallery from 1998 to 2010. In 2014 Andrew had his first solo exhibition as well as being a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. In 2015 he was a finalist in the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales with a portrait of Tim Bonyhady.

Beaver Galleries 5 to 29 November, 2015

When the Reeds purchased Heide in 1934 they were closely involved with an experimental artistic, literary and musical milieu. Heide became a gathering point for creative figures such as Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester, Arthur Boyd, John Perceval, Max Harris, Michael Keon and Peter Cowan, who along with the Reeds paved the way for a new cultural landscape. This exhibition will present artworks the Reeds collected over six decades, family heirlooms, archival photographs, and personal memorabilia.
