his writer fondly recalls the family Torana S. In the four door version, the two-toned copper and black mid-sizer from Holden sported a large engine 3.3L engine in a lightweight body that made for exciting driving. In fact, so high was the power-to-weight ratio that driving it even mildly enthusiastically could easily end up in tears. ‘To fly’ indeed. Of course here, we have a totally different version of the beloved Torana. It’s an LX sports two-door with an even larger engine (383 Chevy – see tech panel for further details) but, in order to tame the wild ride, owner Robert Pegg (also owner of Pegg’s Audio Trim) has made extensive modifications all-round – from engine, to suspension, exhaust, brakes and much more. And the car is truly… stunning.

COLLECTOR’S CLASSIC Indeed, the LX is somewhat of a rare beast these days. Especially one as superbly rebuilt as this specimen. Every aspect of this build has been evaluated and re-evaluated in order to elevate it to the ultimate interpretation. Starting with the exterior sees you admiring the flared A9X guards around the wheel arches, the aggressive all-round body kit and the ‘Blueprint’ blue respray used throughout (including the engine bay). The hood, however, has been done in gloss black and features a large intake scoop front-and-centre. Massive twin chromed exhausts shoot out the back while retro-look ‘mag wheels’ are also done in brilliant chrome. The LX has been debadged and every exterior design aspect has been reworked to brandnew-out-of-the-factory look. Extreme care has been applied to the interior too. Here we have a cream theme throughout, blending in nicely with the exterior’s blue. The entire interior has been stripped, retrimmed and rebuilt. Cream leather and vinyl are applied throughout across the dash, centre console, door trims and independent Recaro seats (fitted to both front and rear). Smart-looking

padded diamond stitching has been applied to the door trims and seats. There’s metalwork aplenty in the various enhancements throughout. A SAAS steering wheel provides a further retro touch as does the B&M billet gear shifter (and its shifter well), billet window winders and door latches. A whole gang of VDO graphite gauges are spread across the dash. The cream theme extends to the floor too where the same material and colour scheme is carried through. Overall the interior colour scheme looks jaw-droppingly gorgeous.
AUDIO SPREAD The audio system shares the same discriminating selectivity. Neatly integrated on to the dash, just below the smaller VDO gauges, is a Sony CDXGT625UI single-DIN head unit. This handles the tunes while passing its signal to the superb and somewhat rare Nakamichi PA-D4100B 4-chan-

nel amplifier which handles the front speakers. The two Polk Audio 6.5-inch splits and two Polk Audio DB651 speakers are built into custom designed pods, two per door with a single tweeter above the 6.5-inch driver for stage projection. The LX’s ‘hatch’ is a superb mix of cream leather/vinyl (Pleather or leatherette) and custom enclosure design. A large cabinet has been designed to hold both the aforementioned Nakamichi PA-D4100D 4-channel amplifier for the splits and the Nakamichi PA-D2125B 2-channel amplifier for the subwoofers. They are installed in a horizontal orientation while the furthest portion of the cabinet houses the two high-power Polk Audio db1040DVC dual voice coil 10-inch subwoofers which have been mounted cone-up. The rear portion of the car is superbly done and on par with the excellence of the cabin’s interior trim level. Its sparse and uncluttered appearance – in a sea of cream – is a welcome

relief from the over-stuffed busyness that can often proliferate.
CONCLUSION This is a retro masterpiece of a car. Robert Pegg has been respectful to the design by enhancing the exterior with a respray and suitable body kit and wheels – none affecting the original’s arresting aesthetic. The interior rebuild is a one-of-a-kind masterwork with the cream theme throughout making for a feel of luxury. The audio kit has been wisely chosen too, and its installation done in a tasteful and, we’d imagine, in a way to wring the best results from the components’ performance. And man, is the LX design gorgeous… even here at InCar – where we’ve seen so many cars – we are extremely jelly…

he team at Maroochy Car Sound specified a true high-end system for this outstanding 2011 Camaro. The Pioneer AVH-X8850BT with its Apple CarPlay technology and a Scosche Camaro dash kit have really added some key audio and visual features, including the ability to control Pandora, Spotify and even play back FLAC files for true audiophile reproduction.
In UtopIa The speaker system has been designed around one of the best sounding and highly awarded automotive speakers in the world: the Focal Be 165W-RC. There was no other option – the Focal Utopia series was a must-have for this project. The Utopia Be 165W-RC speakers provide breathtaking sonic accuracy, with sound reproduction akin to high-end home speakers. You get totally immersed in the powerful soundstage created by these Utopia speakers, with each instrument as distinct and natural as in a live performance. The Focal Utopia bass drivers have been installed into the doors of the Camaro with custom speaker trim rings which have been painted to match the interior colours with an aluminium polished bar to protect the woofers. The install is functional while providing a level of fit and integration expected at a factory level. There’s also no shortage of Stinger Roadkill which is used to line the internal front door skins and it has really helped to eliminate any unwanted rattles. The tweeters look the part in their custom made A-pillar pods. These pods have been handcrafted to suit the Focal Utopia tweeters and to provide a perfect centre image with countless hours spent before fabrication to get the correct tweeter angle and placement on the A-pillars. The front stage of this Camaro is just outstanding. The type of sound quality that would rival many high-end home audio systems. Now, with the subwoofers, we’re getting serious. Here we have two Focal Utopia Be 33 WX subwoofers. These subwoofers use Focal’s composite sandwich “W” cone technology and hit hard producing bass notes that are tight and controlled. Massive, multi-element magnets and zinc alloy baskets give these subs rock-solid power and strength. The heart of the system is made up of two Focal FPS Series amplifiers which offer monster power and performance and get the absolute best out of the Focal Utopia subwoofers and speakers making them perform at their absolute best. The FPS4160 4-channel amplifier takes care of all the full range audio for this system, while the FPS3000 monobloc amplifier is a

perfect match to drive the Focal Utopia 13-inch subwoofers with plenty of power in reserve – it’s a monster of a power amp. The FPS Series amplifiers tick all the boxes when it comes to performance and sound plus, having plenty of adjustability with their inbuilt filters and crossovers they make the Focal Utopia speakers and subwoofers perform at their absolute best. They’re all about high-fidelity reproduction and are a perfect choice for this system.
BOOT-UP With a unique boot opening to work with, the Camaro had a few challenges regarding the product placement and layout when trying to get the best result in audio performance and visual looks. Plus having a boot-mounted battery threw another spanner in the works. It was important to have easy access to service or maintain the bat-
tery. The limited opening meant the subwoofer enclosure would have to be built in a way that would work with the small boot opening. With all these factors in play MCS came up with a great design that also fitted the brief. The boot has been covered in copious amounts of Stinger Roadkill in order to prevent any unwanted noises. When deciding how to design the subwoofer enclosure it was important not to hide the awesome construction and multi stack magnets that the Focal Utopia 33 WX subwoofers have to show. We decided to construct an enclosure with acrylic viewing windows to show how great these subwoofers really look. The amplifiers are mounted so they look like they are floating, then add the Focal Utopia passive crossovers and the Optima battery into the mix and there is definitely no room for luggage or groceries in this boot. But when the choice is a
pair of 13-inch Focal Utopia subwoofers and a couple of Focal FPS amps, who cares about that other stuff anyway! MCS also saw no limitations when optioning up this Chevy Camaro from a few essential engine mods, air filter and exhaust upgrades giving this V8 even more punch. The Camaro’s Eibach adjustable Coil-Over suspension has given it a low-ride which corners like a true performance car should. The custom made 22-inch D2 Forged wheels with Toyo 265/35/22 tires for front and a massive 315/30/22 for the rear, has really captured the modern muscle car look. There was no other choice when it came to a high performance battery that can handle the load that a system like this. The Optima Batteries have been a proven choice that will perform well in high-end audio systems; the Optima D27F Yellow Top packs a whopping 800CCA and 66Ah of capacity.
CONCLUSION This is one great-looking car with an audio system that matches the look and performance that is expected from a Camaro. The Pioneer head unit with CarPlay is a great choice, and having high voltage RCA Pre-outs is a real plus. The Focal Utopia front speakers, well these are just awesome. What else can we say? The subwoofers hit hard and really complement the front end of this audio system. It’s just a great looking and sounding audio system. The installation of this system was headed up by Michael Prentis with a special thanks to the entire team at Maroochy Car Sound for getting behind this project. E
ven by today’s high HSV standards – and the current Commodores in this league are superb cars – the 1988 Group A stands out as an exceptional example of Aussie car design. There had been nothing like it until then and some may argue nothing like it ever since. And if this writer’s memory is correct, the 1988 VL was the first vehicle launched by the newly-set-up HSV branch of Holden, designed specifically for Group A Touring car racing. So really, here’s somewhat of an automatic icon from the get-go.
TOP OF GROUP This monster has had quite a bit of work done to its already powerful V8 engine – quite aside from the immaculate silver and chrome work – while also bearing the benefits of exhaust and suspension modifications, among other things. Extras were added such as a sunroof, pumped guards and guard flutes and more. The exterior paint work has been refreshed with a custom silver Dupont respray – the original Group A colour was ‘Dorward Blue’ – while the SS Group A badge has been expertly brushed on by Jason Stevenson. The body kit is pure eye candy and includes a massive air-grilled front skirt, attractive side skirts with meshed port accents and the iconic gigantic rear spoiler, which was originally designed to provide maximum road down pressure come race time.

The interior features original VL Group A black leather seats while the rear seats are custom black leather. A trio of gauges have been installed below the head unit and keep the driver informed on transmission temperature, engine oil temperature and water temperature. A large Momo steering wheel and steel pedals have been installed while Hertz logos on the doors in bright red provide a bit of colour to the interior. The original 1988 VL HSV Group A sported what were at the time very good quality 16-inch 5-spoke wheels. They suited the car even if, ideally, a larger gauge would have made it even more ‘racy’. That issue has been thoroughly addressed

here with owner Steven Santos specifying highly attractive and massive 22-inch wheels with rubber band-thin Falken tyres. The deep dish chrome and grey chrome wheels provide an even more aggressive stance while also elevating the visual impact. Both the exterior and interior of this extraordinary car have been treated with utmost respect to the original classic design.
Audio Tech The class act continues with the gear chosen for the audio gear. It all starts with the Clarion NX502A multimedia head unit which has been
smartly integrated into the dash. The rest of the system is made up of components from the excellent Hertz brand. As Steven says “Hertz equipment is probably some of the best sounding gear I have ever used.” We would not disagree. Front and rear amplification is catered for by two of Hertz’s HDP 4 4-channel amplifiers providing ample power and current drive to satisfy to any situation. The two Hertz 12-inch subwoofers are being driven by a Hertz HDP 1 high power monobloc amplifier. Speakers are from Hertz too and they are splits which have been mounted in factory locations in order to keep the interior as neat and uncluttered

as possible. However, in order to improve imaging and soundstage, the speakers’ tweeters have been mounted flush high up on the doors. Neat. The boot’s install has been kept neat in order to make the space usable. The floor of the boot is a free space adorned with an embossed logo to shout the very skilled installation company Audiotech (the space below is used for storage) while an embossing with the Hertz logo features on the boot’s lid. Then at the back, vertically mounted and behind a clear acrylic window you’ll see the Hertz HDP 4, HDP 1 amplification and the splits’ crossover enclosures.

Two custom enclosures with acrylic windows on the boot’s side walls store the battery on the driver’s side and the fuel related components (pump, surge tank, etc) on the opposite side. The set-up is extremely neat and, as mentioned earlier, provides for access and useability for the boot. The Hertz 12-inch subwoofers have been unusually placed in the centre panel behind the amplifier rack and behind the bulkhead. This provides good bass power and is an efficient – if less visually arresting – way of installing large subwoofer drivers.
ConClusion What a classic car this Group A is… Steve Santos has respected the original design while very cunningly enhancing it in some subtle and not so subtle ways. Everything about it is classy; from the superbly tweaked and polished engine and bay, to the subtly elegant interior, to the exterior which respects the original Group A aesthetic. And then there’s the wisely thought-out and expertly installed audio system which, with its phenomenal Hertz kit choice, is bound to rock hard. Group A indeed.

ere we go with another fine well engineered vehicle, this time from the quality global Subaru automaker. Subaru builds its cars tough as nails and they can handle just about anything thrown at them. Most come with fully equipped with an All Wheel Drive (AWD) mode. Subaru is also known for another great design, its boxer engine used in most of its models. With this being said the flat/boxer engine along with all-wheel-drive became standard equipment in all the regular and mini-sized compact cars in most international markets and is also the standard in the majority of North American Subaru cars. The brand has targeted certain crowds of enthusiast including the outdoors and the affordable sports car enthusiasts.

KEEPING TRACK Let’s break this down. Here is an outstanding track-built 2006 Subaru STI jammed full of performance parts and the owner, Jamarri Whiteside, designed most of this track-themed car. Jamarri is based out of Beaverton, Oregon where the car resides today. The STI was originally purchased for $28,000 and Jamarri claimed to have dumped over $100,000 plus and nine years of build time into his intensely-built STI. He has made it into his own style of track car for the streets. The engine was overhauled and fully built to 500hp with multiple upgraded performance parts. A local shop called Surgeline, near Jamarri’s town, helped with the install and tuning which was accomplished with help from engine builder and shop owner Bobby Wintrode. A major upgrade included a full engine and fuse box wire tuck along with battery relocation inside the cabin. A standalone AEM engine management system was added to up the pole replacement on the motor. The stock turbo was replaced and upgraded to a Garret turbo 0.70 A/R compressor housing with a 4-inch inlet and anti-surge ports. Finishing off the detail work, almost all the bolt-on engine parts got powder coated gold, black and blue.

Now, closing up the Seibon dry carbon fibre bonnet you take notice in the multiple carbon fiber components on the exterior of the car. Including the four Seibon dry carbon fibre doors and matching Seibon dry carbon fibre boot lid. Even as you approach the STI you can’t help but notice it was addressed by using Custom grabber blue paint work done by Eddie Slepicka from Bent Metal Customs shop. Your eyes automatically get drawn in quick to the oversized plump Ray Gram lights wheels bulging out the sides, sitting heavy on 315/30/18 wrapped on Falken 57DR tyres. Now while all of this looks so awesome, the challenge was to complete the car’s interior to a true track setup. As you grip the handle to open up the dry carbon fibre front door you will catch a glimpse of the custom made aluminium door panels to lighten up the interior. Still that wasn’t enough, the remaining Subaru interior stock parts were removed and gutted for

race weight reduction. Then a full six point SCCA spec weld-in dash roll cage was installed with compete gussets for easy access in and out of the car.
Inner sound With the focus still on the interior the front Recaro Racing seats will hold you snug into position strapped in with the Team Tech 4-point harnesses in custom blue. A custom made stainless steel shift lever extension with a bronze burnt knob was installed. mid speakers that blast quality tones out. These front speakers are placed in a custom handmade plexiglass box mounted in-between the roll cage. A sleek Memphis Audio PR4.50 amplifier controls the watts on the mid speakers along with the single Memphis Audio SC10D4 10-inch slim subwoofer. A ton of thought and detail was put into this, everything had to be quick and removable and a ‘performance’ themed audio system. With a few quick disconnects the full system can be removed for weight reduction as needed. That consists of a custom made thick plexiglass plate mounted to the white roll cage in the car that counts as an amplifier along with crossovers rack held on with titanium nuts. To boost up the power levels the Memphis Audio capacitor with blue LED controls the voltage and power readouts. decided to upgrade all the factory spec parts installing most of the undercarriage himself. The stock suspension was replaced with Cusco Zero 3x coilovers for the desired ride height. He also installed Perrin cross lock under braces and Perrin rear control arms. As he couldn’t stop there he added a family of Cusco performance parts including Cusco trailing arms, Cusco lower centre points, and Cusco red strut bar. This explains why Jamarri enjoys driving his ride – it performs like a supercar.
