SET-UP
Set the ball back in your stance. This will help you ideally set your hands in front of the ball. Another important aspect of the set-up is to have your weight forward to encourage hitting the ball before hitting the sand.

BOUNCE & RELEASE
To ensure you make the distance take a less lofted club, either a pitching wedge or even a 9-iron.This will allow you to swing smoothly and it will send the ball out on a lower trajectory so the ball will bounce and release with a little less spin.
COMPACT SWING
Use body turn in the backswing and don’t try to make a full swing. A threequarter compact swing will help you maintain better control and keep a wide arc. Swing smoothly through the ball, ensuring a shallow divot after the ball.

COMBINE CLUBS TO MATCH THE COURSE
HORSES FOR COURSES
When I found myself playing golf full-time, I had to adjust my club selection in my golf bag to suit the course I was playing. When playing a longer course, I would load my bag top-heavy and when I played a shorter course, I made adjustments to have more options in the short iron area. The length a golfer hits the ball is a factor that can determine the combination of clubs a player has in their bag. A golfer who hits the ball a long way may have only a driver and a fairway wood and more shorter irons. A golfer who does not have much distance off the tee may have more woods and hybrids in their set to help them take advantage of the course. What combination do you have in your bag? Does it suit the strengths in your game and the course you regularly play? A typical combination most midhandicapped golfers should have is: driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, 3-hybrid, 4-hybrid, 5-iron to pitching and sand wedge. This is mainly due to golfers trying to add distance to their combination due to a lack of distance along with a lack of confidence to play with long irons.

TAKE THE SAFE OPTION
CUT SHOTS WITH LOW-RISK CHIPPING
DON’T BE A SUCKER
One sure way to save shots around the green is to avoid playing high-risk shots at sucker pins. Play to the ‘fat’ part of the green, which takes the dreaded ‘wipe’ out of play.
SHOULDER CONTROL
For consistent contact, play the ball in the centre of your stance with your hands set slightly ahead of the ball. From here, your shoulders control the shot not your hands. Swing back and aim for the back of the ball, accelerating through impact.
TRY THIS DRILL
Put a towel under your armpits and try to not let it fall in the course of your chipping action. This will encourage using your shoulders and not a hand action during the swing.
