AUDIO PHYSIC

AUDIO PHYSIC CLASSIC 10 AND 20 LOUDSPEAKERS

W

hile using a familiar shape and the d’Appolito style symmetrical driver layout, the replacement for Audio Physic’s Yara series, the Classic 10 (image below centre), has new reflex cabinet design and materials. The drivers (2 x mid-bass and one dome tweeter) are all new, as are the range of finishes. High quality WBT NextGen binding posts are fitted. This is a twoand-a-half way design, which Audio Physic explain as follows: “In the case of a two-and-a-half way loudspeaker, a woofer is added to the two-way system where it covers the bass frequencies up to approx. 500Hz and operates in parallel with the woofer/midrange driver.” There are Standard timber finishes at $2899/pair (Oak, Black Ash, Cherry, Walnut) and Premium (Gloss White, Gloss Black). The premium finishes will cost a little more, at $3199/pair. As ever, the goal of Audio Physic is to present you with as much of the feeling of a “live” performance as possible, within the constraints of size and price. The Classic 10 takes over from a very successful Yara series and builds on that experience to continue to bring you a singularly musical presentation in an

4

LWHSpring2012_004 Audio Physic.indd 4

affordable package. To extend the options in this class of speaker, Audio Physic have also released a new Classic 20 model (pictured above, and right), which steps things up another notch. The driver layout of the Classic 20 is quite different to that of the Classic 10, and more closely resembles the format used in larger Audio Physic speakers. There are two side-firing woofers, while the midrange and tweeter remain at the top of the front baffle as usual. This new series has fresh reflex cabinet design and materials, and might be seen as bridging between the replacement for the Yara, the Classic 10, and the middle batting order from Audio Physic, such as the Sitara and Tempo 25. The drivers (2 x woofers, one midrange and one dome tweeter)

are all new, as are the range of finishes. High quality WBT NextGen binding posts are fitted. There are Standard finishes at $3899/pair (Oak, Black Ash, Cherry, Walnut) and Premium (Gloss White, Gloss Black). Premium finishes cost a little more at $4199/pair. The Classic 20 takes you a step over and above the Classic 10 while retaining similarly compact dimensions, just a little deeper in the cabinet. This and the extra bass driver enable more bass depth in the presentation, which is true to Audio Physic’s aim of bringing the live performance into your home. MAIN FEATURES Sandwich cabinet construction ● New surfaces: glass white high gloss / glass black high gloss ● A new bass reflex construction integrated into the sandwich construction (Classic 10, Centre and Compact) ● Newly developed loudspeaker systems ● A connection terminal with WBT nextgen terminals ● Interchangeable front panels

SUNFIRE SUBWOOFERS

S

unfire is another brainchild of that noted prodigy in hifi design over many years, Bob Carver. He has turned his mind to many aspects of audio over the years, in amplifiers, speakers and even CD players. The subwoofer episode started in the 1990s when, answering the oft-heard request of his wife, he sought to make a smaller but superior subwoofer. He did it with a vengeance, producing high-powered bipolar designs with

6

LWHSpring2012_006-007 Sunfire Subs.indd 6

enormous current that are the basis of the True Subwoofers (TS-EQ) in today’s range. The guiding principles behind Sunfire subwoofers are: (a) compactness; (b) to go as low as possible; and (c) to play loud! To achieve these goals in the HRS range, they have utilised every engineering aspect possible, starting with heavy 20mm MDF

enclosures, which are sealed, not ported, to get tighter bass without the ‘boom’. The drivers have to be light but rigid in cone structure and heavy in the magnet, with very long travel. The roll surrounds are specifically designed with variable thickness profiles to optimise the speed and travel of the woofer. To exert the force and subtle control over the cone’s excursions, there must be high power, but this must be guided by smart technologies which maintain clean performance even when the system is working hard. There are three ranges, starting with the SDS, a two-driver design (one forward active, one downward passive) with sizes 8”/200mm, 10”/ 250mm and 12”/300mm, and amplifier power of 200/250/300w respectively. Priced at $599, $799 and $999 these represent great value and deliver amazing performance.

SUNFIRE

“Still want more? The True Sub EQ Signature gives you balanced inputs, a measurement microphone and internal contour circuitry that automatically optimise the subwoofer to your individual listening or viewing room. It is truly a one-ofa-kind product with absolutely no peer.” The second group is the HRS, which covers the same range of sizes, but with everything built to a much heavier standard. These are high-power and very high performance, but once again are priced at a level that makes them ultra-competitive. The largest of the HRS series is the HRS12, still at a relatively compact size of around 343mm cubed. A low frequency response of 18Hz is very impressive, and not usually achieved in a subwoofer at this price. You get a powerhouse rated at 1000w from a coolrunning Class D amplifier module. Cool running, because Class D gives off very little waste energy in the form of heat – it is very efficient, important when you put a powerful amplifier into a box! High power is needed to deliver the maximum punch possible from the woofer. The HRS12 frequency response of 18Hz–100Hz with sound pressure levels up to 108dB makes this one a heavy hitter in rooms up to 120 square metres.

As you’d expect, there are adjustments for volume, crossover frequency and Phase (0-180 degrees). Power can be On, Off or Auto On/Off (signal sensing). There are inputs of both line level (gold plated RCA) and speaker level to use as required. There are also two other models in this series, the HRS10 and the HRS8. The HRS series are priced from $1299-$1999. The ultimate subwoofers from Sunfire are the TS-EQ series “True Subwoofers”. These are powerful to the point of being brutal, with 2700W of amplification inbuilt. But it’s not all about brute force. There are smart technologies in there too. “The True Subwoofer EQ Signature will likely generate more earth-shaking and musical bass than any sub you’ve ever encountered. It’s a true, flagship product with a massive 116dB of crystal clear output, delivered with the precision of Sunfire’s two most coveted and patented technologies. First is the 5th-generation high pressure, High Back-emf design, which produces extraordinary levels of bass energy from an impossibly small enclosure. The second is Bob Carver’s

Tracking Downconverter power source, used to supply its amazing, internal 2700-watt amplifier. We are stocking the TS-EQ10 and TS-EQ12, priced at $2999 and $3999 respectively. They are two-driver models, one each side of the enclosure, and of such rigidity that they’re almost more like pistons. For absolute solidity, speed and power in bass response, these subs are the way to go, and furthermore they outperform subs that cost considerably more. And that goes for all the models by Sunfire: they will not be outperformed for the money, at any level. Note: By the time this issue is out, we may have seen the new smaller version of the TS-EQ subwoofer called the Atmos. This uses two 6.5”/162mm drivers in an aluminium enclosure designed to withstand the “two atmospheres” of pressure which the sub generates internally. With a 1400w amp running the show, this diminutive demon will outperform a lot of larger subs.

YAMAHA AVENTAGE ‘020’ MODELS RX-A3020 and RX-A2020 Yamaha’s Aventage receivers have been a resounding success in the first and second editions, and there’s no doubt the third series will enjoy the same popularity. They have superb sound and all the features you could want. To recap the main points, this is the premium Yamaha Surround Receiver range, and all are optimised for musical audio as well as movies. They have numerous surround modes covered (including 23 DSP modes) right up to

8

LWHSpring2012_008-009 Yamaha.indd 8

the higher resolution DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby True HD ones for Blu-ray, are network connectible (via Ethernet cable or wifi), and at the top of the range have nine channels of power. Once networked you can control them with the Yamaha app via your iOS (Apple) device, Android and even Kindle Fire, get Internet Radio into them directly, and stream other content from around the internet or the home network. The two top models, RX-A3020 ($2699) and RX-A2020 ($2199), as usual,

have extra-everything. Starting at the beginning, they’ll have more advanced room measuring and auto-setup functions, taking readings from up to eight points around the room. They’ll also have more advanced video chipsets, the VHD1900 HQV VIDA. With nine channels of power you can run a 5.1 or 5.2 channel theatre plus Zones 2 & 3 from these big guys, and max power ratings of around 150-160w per channel means no limp performance in any of them.

YAMAHA

“Yamaha’s other Aventage models (RX-A1020 / 820 / 720) all have an amazing list of inclusions. There’s AirPlay, 4k video passthrough and upscaling, at least 90w to 100w per the seven channels.” The RX-A3020 can be expanded with a separate two-channel amplifier to give you 11.2 channels of pre-amp controlled power, which can be allocated according to your priorities. It becomes possible to run two 5.1 systems, as the second HDMI out is independent of the first. Or you can do a 7.2-channel theatre but still have Zones 2 & 3 running in stereo. Yamaha’s other Aventage models (RX-A1020/820/720) all have an amazing list of inclusions. There’s AirPlay, 4k video pass-through and upscaling, at least 90w to 100w of power per the seven channels, a front USB that does digital transfer from your iOS player, Zone 2 functions and YPAO Auto Setup/Room EQ. Upscaling of

older analogue sources to 1080p is there, along with at least six and up to eight HDMI 1.4 inputs plus the usual couple of optical and coax ones too. It’s clear that features are not being rationed in any of the Yamaha Aventage range; they all have a generous allotment. However, Rule #1 when buying a surround receiver is buy the most expensive one you can, as there’s always some extra dividend in terms of connections, processing, and

ultimately the power to control a large number of speakers as well as possible. In addition, the Aventage “020” range will provide for higher resolution “4k” screens which will become more common over the next few years. We’ve been through stages with high definition, starting with 1280x720 pixels, then 1366x768, then “full HD” at 1920x1080. What most of us have now is a 2k screen, and this is going to roughly double (as new models come along) to 3840x2160 (approx.) which will be “4k”. The first flat panel TVs with this capability are appearing now, and will become more common over the next twelve months. It’s good to have this aspect covered in any of the new models of surround receiver you purchase now, even if you don’t need it right away. Individual model details will go up on our website as they come into the store. Pricing remains at much the same levels as the “010” series, with some savings of $100 each in the RX-A820 ($1499) and 720 ($1199). The RX-A1020 is at $1799.

KRELL PHANTOM III AND 2250e

T

he Phantom III is the first Krell preamplifier to include either an optional digital input module or a headphone output. The digital module features AES/EBU, coaxial and optical digital inputs for use with streaming devices or other digital sources. The Phantom III ($6999) is the perfect centrepiece for a world-class digital and analog audio system. This is a dual monaural design, with the left and right channels afforded their own power supply regulation and individual circuit boards. All signal gain is executed with surface mount technology using proprietary multiple-output current mirrors with nearly 500 times the open loop linearity of other designs. Featuring 700kHz bandwidth in a zero feedback, balanced, Krell Current Mode design, the Phantom III shares the same design philosophy as its bigger brother, the flagship Phantom preamplifier. Negative feedback is not used anywhere in the preamp, nor is it necessary. Open-loop distortion is typically less than 0.003%. The volume control is realised with a balanced resistor ladder – bandwidth and transient response of the preamp circuitry are virtually unaffected by the volume setting. The headphone circuitry is identical to the main circuitry, offering private listening with the same performance as speaker playback. The digital module supports up to 24 bit / 192kHz LPCM. All digital signals are fed to an ESS Sabre DAC and then sent to Krell’s Current Mode, discrete balanced analog circuitry. Being a modular design, the optional digital converter module is easily added at any time.

12

LWHSpring2012_012-013 Bryston.indd 12

Oversized for a preamplifier, the power supply features a 95VA transformer and 40,000µF of capacitance, giving it the ability to respond quickly to musical demands. The large power supply improves noise rejection and renders the Phantom III impervious to all but the most severe AC voltage power fluctuations. A new eco-friendly standby mode reduces power consumption to 2w. The Phantom III preamplifier is available in silver or black finish. SPECIFICATIONS • • • •

Refinement in reproduction and huge power are Krell trademark features, and they define the Evolution 2250e ($9999). Boasting technology sourced from award-winning larger siblings, the Evolution 2250e provides the immense power and unmatched sound quality that are the hallmarks of all Krell amplifiers. Sharing the same advanced high speed output devices, massive power supplies, and unique Krell Current Mode circuitry, the Evolution 2250e delivers performance that was previously reserved for products costing far more. Sophisticated and expensive to execute, surface-mount circuitry is featured throughout, gracing the design with short circuit path lengths, vanishing parasitic capacitance and improved bandwidth. Alone, the Evolution 2250e is ideal for use in stereo music systems. When coupled to the three channel Evolution 3250e, this duo makes ideal amplification for home theatre applications.

Prodigious power, low energy draw Blessed with a power supply outfitted with a 2,500VA power transformer and 136,000µF of capacitance, the Evolution 2250e is a powerhouse. Power output of 250w per channel into 8 ohms and 500w per channel into 4 ohms will drive any loudspeaker to its full dynamic capability. An additional transformer for control and protection circuitry also provides power for a new energy-efficient standby mode, similar to turning off a 15w light that is always on in your house – the draw is only 2w. usage also reduces heat output substantially. The high-current and high-voltage analog supplies have additional noise filtration circuitry to reduce high-frequency switching noise.

Smaller elegant chassis Housed in elegant silver or black brushed anodised aluminium, the Evolution 2250e is the smallest amplifier in the Evolution ‘e’ Series. Featuring a 4U (7” High) profile, the new amplifiers bring prodigious power to applications requiring smaller amplifiers without sacrificing sonic performance. The stylish aluminium faceplate features the blue power ring when in operating mode and green in low draw standby mode that is shared by all Evolution ‘e’ Series amplifiers. SPECIFICATIONS •

BRYSTON BHA-1 HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER

H

eadphone amplifiers have gained enormously in popularity as people discover that the same principles apply to headphones as to loudspeakers: a better amplifier simply makes them sound better, particularly if they are really good headphones and a bit on the inefficient side. There’s something for everyone, starting from the entry-level Musical Fidelity V-CANS Mk.2 at $249, then their M1-HPA at $899, with its linelevel or USB inputs. Further up the scale there’s the Lehmann Linear at $1299, which is also built to a high standard and the design of which pays attention to every last component. But now there’s the Bryston BHA-1 at $1899. Looking more like a full width pre-amplifier, the BFA-1 exudes serious hifi intent right away. On the front panel you find the balanced L+R XLR outputs, plus a stereo version of that, and a standard 6.3mm socket as used by most headphones. Sennheiser HD800 owners can get a special cable which connects to the L+R XLRs!

Then there are Balance and Volume controls, a gain selector (14dB or 20dB) and an Input Selector to choose between balanced inputs, singleended RCA, and even 3.5mm stereo mini, all of which are to be found on the back panel. Inside the box there are a host of classy design features, including Balanced Dual Mono circuitry, Noble Stereo Volume potentiometer, 6 fully discreet Class A Bryston op amps, and a high quality Bryston internal analog power supply.

LOEWE ROOM REFURBISHED

A

s part of our renovations, the Loewe room is being redone, and it will have a selection of beautifully designed TV and audio products on show. Apart from the major flat screen TVs (Individual and Connect) there will be a couple of relative newcomers to the stable, guaranteed to excite interest. The Loewe Sound Box (below) is a powered speaker with CD player, FM radio and iPod dock. At 470x190x58mm it’s not small, being a little wider than most full-width components, although quite narrow. It has interchangeable colour panels for the top, and the system remote covers Loewe TV and Blu-ray disc players as well. USB and auxiliary inputs expand the source possibilities. Specifications are scarce, but as Loewe say “two fourinch, full-range speakers and twin digital stereo amplifiers give the Soundbox a rich, powerful sound.”

lenwallisaudio.com.au

LWHSpring2012_015 Loewe.indd 15

Loewe Soundvision (pictured right) is a further step along this line, being a sound system with a touch-screen controller protruding from the top, and the ability to do iPod, CD, FM and Internet Radio plus music streaming wirelessly. As well as the touch control there’s a remote handset. This time we get six speakers, including two bass units, for superior sound in this type of one-box device. More wireless sourcing can be done via Bluetooth. The Individual Compose range of televisions is so named for its ability to adapt to many differing configurations in terms of mountings, ancillary equipment for sound, and those small touches like interchangeable side colour strips for a touch of chromatic brilliance even when switched off. Those slim, elegant lines contain a very fast 400Hz screen (Full HD) which is LED-backlit LCD and can track fastmoving images beautifully, and is 3D capable. An inbuilt Loewe DR+ (500GB) recorder makes capture, storage and replay of TV programs easy and efficient, running off the TV’s remote control. Live TV can be paused, rewound and re-watched any time. For simulated surround a Loewe Soundbar can be added, and there are

pedestal stands of various heights to suit your room and positioning. Or use the close-fitting wall mounts to achieve a super-flat wall installation. Screen sizes are 55”/46”/40”/32”. Placement on one of the Spectral AV cabinets can be the perfect finishing touch, being stylish while minimalist – but very practical, with compartments for accompanying equipment. For those wishing to mix in as much networked content as possible, the Loewe Connect series (main image) offers an exciting line-up of capabilities. You can enjoy all the usual free-to-air TV and radio, plus Internet Radio, Online Video Content (Browser), streamed programs from your local network, Photos, Music – you name it. The suite of features varies according to model/size, but the 40”/101cm model features 200Hz speed, DR+ inbuilt recorder (500GB), and inbuilt DVB Radio. The screen is again an LED-backlit LCD, full HD and 3D capable. Other sizes are 32”/81cm and the 26”/66cm, although the 26” has a much reduced feature set. Once again there’s a mixture of floor, table and wall-mounting options.

ENTERTAINING WITH ELEGANCE L en Wallis Audio was very excited to embark on such an inspiring project with the owners of this fine home. The smart design and the well-conceived ideas from the owners made the final results even more exceptional. Being a home automation project, it was essential for the Len Wallis Audio team to prepare a blueprint including all the documentation and design elements that would steer the project’s execution. Alberto Vangi and Scott Collis representing Len Wallis Audio worked closely with Lee Vaughan & Ben Neale of EBM Systems throughout the build of this project, to ensure its success.

16

LWHSpring2012_016-019 Custom Install.indd 16

One of the key features of the design was to enable a Clipsal C-Bus and Creston centralised control system of the entire house including multi room audio/video, lighting, security, motorised blinds and windows, floor heating, and even the heated towel rails! At the front door you find a keyless entry stainless intercom system. A unique ring tone is sent to the owner’s fixed and cordless phones allowing them to automatically open the door. As you walk through the residence, one of the first rooms is the family room. Here we have provided an audio solution with one single wall-mounted speaker,

By Alberto Vangi known as the sound bar, which activates surround sound while viewing a 58-inch plasma screen. A hand-held Creston remote also brings together control of other devices including Foxtel, Blu-ray, AppleTV and the iPod music library. On the same level you also have an impressive all-enabled temperature controlled wine cellar with LED lighting and a Clipsal DLT light switch to control the lighting in the area. The stunning lap pool is engulfed by harbour views; here we provided a rock-shaped speaker that not only disappears within the landscaping but offers great outdoor entertaining sound.

The entry level also offers an expansive open-plan living area that combines with the dining/kitchen and opens out to a deck with remarkable views. Apart from the rock speakers (which are hardly visible) we used Stealth Acoustic speakers to work within the ceiling – they completely disappear into the ceiling. This is partly why the home has such clean lines throughout. A centrally-located 15-inch Creston master touch panel was installed as the brain of the system. This master control gives access to all controls throughout the smart home, including setting their schedules to allow for timed events to occur such as floor heating, blinds opening and closing, and lighting scene settings for different times of day. Another advantage of this system is the energy management function, which works by communicating between the Clipsal/Crestron system and all other control devices.

Heading to the lower ground floor we find a bar area ready for a game of billiards while watching a 58”/147cm plasma TV or listening to digital radio or your iPod via invisible Stealth speakers. A Crestron hand-held controller and local Saturn Clipsal range switches continue to make things a breeze to use. Another exceptional entertainment feature of the house is the dedicated theatre room, accessed by a redcarpet entry foyer as you walk down the staircase. Immediately you feel as if you are entering a gold-class movie experience, with the comfortable seating and atmosphere where you can easily imagine having a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres while watching a movie on the 110”/279cm screen, the Full HD projected image coming via the ultra-modern JVC DILA (Digital Light Amplification) projector. B&W speakers and a Velodyne subwoofer provide the digital surround sound, directed by a top Yamaha AV surround

sound receiver and again overseen by a Crestron hand-held controller. A press of the button will have the lighting lowered, the projector showing your favourite movie, digital TV show, Foxtel IQ2 or even AppleTV-sourced entertainment. At the top level of the house the Master Bedroom has a 50”/127cm plasma ready for Foxtel or Digital TV programs. Crestron again provides ease of use for the lighting and blind control. Since this was on a level with other bedrooms, we provided a Crestron 5.7-inch version of the master panel for general control of the floor, and again ease of use of the energy management system. Central to the house is the area known as the CDP (Central Distribution Point) – what many people may call the hub. This is where we installed a rack to accommodate many of the distribution devices. A good example is the fully automated security system which monitors alarms, displaying which alarms

Newsletter Spring 2012 have been activated, allowing views of multiple cameras via Crestron panels and TV screens, checking of open doors and gates, and determining areas that have been entered or windows that have been opened. Clipsal C-Bus Sensor & Infrascans are located throughout the house, including reed switches on windows to communicate back to the CDP for security system updates which are displayed on the Crestron touch panel, along with the cameras recording on a DVR in the CDP. As soon as motion is detected, the alarm system is activated. The multi-room music system is also distributed from this point, providing the owners of the house future flexibility and a simpler solution throughout. The Crestron system, programmed by Ivan Smith, became the central control system for the house and is notable for the elegance in its design and ease of use. It allows the owners to walk up to each touch panel, from the handhelds to fixed in-wall panels, and control their entire smart house with complete confidence. We couldn’t be happier with the result. Not only was it an inspiring experience to have worked on this project but it is always gratifying to know that the clients were also very pleased with the journey and final outcomes. The owners themselves also did an amazing job with their own thoughts and inputs into the project and the overall design of the home and interiors. The quality level was set extremely high, and we can say proudly that we achieved it.

THE DRAGONFLY DAC

O

ver time, many things get smaller and still achieve very good performance. We’re used to being able to stick a music library in our pocket, or have a large amount of storage on a USB key drive. But to get a DAC of the quality now offered by the AudioQuest DragonFly ($299) in a little plug-in item not much larger than a USB key drive is really astonishing. Steve Silbermann, AQ’s Vice President of Development, wanted to buck the system and create waves. He wanted to make “a really high-quality audio product that meets people on their own terms”. By this he meant convenient, able to be taken anywhere any time, and plugged into a computer as a source, making it an audiophile playback system. To do this he enlisted Gordon Rankin, whose work on USB DACs had already

20

LWHSpring2012_020 Audioquest Dragonfly.indd 20

attracted attention. Rankin said that meeting the size specification for the DragonFly was “a pain in the ass”, since there are 107 parts inside it including five regulated power supplies, an ESS Sabre 24-bit DAC, a Burr-Brown headphone amp/line amp with 64-step analogue volume control, a Texas Instruments TAS1020 controller and other chip sets. Once connected and installed, the asynchronous DragonFly adapts to sampling rates of 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96kHz, giving a visible colour indication via the LED-lit dragonfly logo. (It downconverts 192kHz to 96.) The output is via 3.5mm stereo socket, and you can take this via whatever cable combo you like to the audio system of your choice. This has just arrived as we go to print, so nobody has heard it yet. But Art Dudley reviewed it in the October 2012 issue of

Stereophile and said it sounded as good as his $900 reference DAC. On the one hand this is not an audiophile product, but it certainly fills a space in the growing area of how to make your music sound good wherever you are. It’s so small you can take it anywhere, it costs no more than other “compact” DACs that you probably wouldn’t pack for a trip, and there’s really no reason not to have one unless you’re stonecold broke!

RTI CONTROLS

Newsletter Spring 2012

REMOTE CONTROL GETS SMARTER

L

ovely touch-screen remote controls with backlighting and all manner of smart possibilities are now available as a combined package of software from companies like RTI and Savant, and the familiar iPad from Apple. At the easiest end of the spectrum, apps are available that control your recent Marantz or Yamaha surround receiver and networked Blu-ray player directly from the iOS device, and you can control other things (like Sonos) with a similar free app. Stepping up from there, smart remote company RTI, who we have been involved with for some years, now supply a more comprehensive control solution. That is to say a remote control which can control not only the audio/video system in your theatre room, but also things like lighting and air con too, in conjunction with the RTI processor and the appropriate C-Bus items. RTiPanel can utilise an iPad or iPhone to give you a portable controller (see the screenshots above). What it adds is programmability – each client’s remote can be customised for both function and appearance, using RTI’s Integration Designer programming software for control over lighting, air conditioning, and so on. The home’s wireless network needs to be very good

22

LWHSpring2012_022 RTI ipad.indd 22

and highly stable for this to work reliably. In some cases we use commercial standard wireless routers rather than the common domestic ones. “Integration Designer allows complete flexibility in the design of the controller screen. Several pre-defined button shapes are provided, plus a complete set of editing tools to create custom graphics for the display. Infrared codes can be added to any button by a simple drag-and-drop process. The Macro Editor provides a simple interface for allowing every button in the system to carry out complex multistep actions. “Integration Designer also includes a powerful Infrared Library Manager, which allows infrared codes to be learned and stored for easy reuse in multiple systems. Updates to the included infra-red library are continually being made…” This is an evolving area in the custom installation/home automation field, and the outer limits of what these systems can do are still being explored. Variations in building construction can also require differing wireless solutions, as propagation of the wireless network can be affected by the structure of the home.

The benefits to the customer are obvious, as the graphic representation of the various controls makes it easy for them to understand and operate; indeed a degree of automation can make things just happen at the right time without the home owner having to do anything. This can apply to lighting, air con, security, blinds/curtains, garden irrigation and pool maintenance. Once the client’s needs are assessed, the appropriate control system can be recommended, be it RTI or Crestron. The scope of the project and the customer’s own desires will influence the final formula. But from simple AV control through to full home automation, we can make it happen, and make it work.

MUSIC

ONLINE MUSIC By Geoff Forgie

I

used to write about CDs on these remote back pages of the magazine, but the world is changing. Discs are almost a thing of the past. Will it get to the stage it did once, many years ago, when tons of 78rpm records ended up as landfill under a Sydney freeway? That may be just an urban myth, but what follows is true. With the advent of Spotify in Australia, I can say that this type of service (online music library, subscription based) has really arrived. I was a bit shy of these until now, as they didn’t appear to really cover my musical tastes in any depth. But now, whether you’re into popular, folk, blues, classical or jazz, the chances are that you’ll find way more than you expected in the Spotify listings. Each new range of surround receivers is enhancing the access to this sort of service, with Marantz possibly offering it later this year as an add-on to their ‘007’ series. As a fan of CD for a long time (as well as retaining a large LP collection), I thought I’d go on buying discs for a while yet. But now, that too is changing. Linking your Spotify Premium account ($12/ month) to your good stereo systems via Sonos opens up the musical world to such a degree that it has shaken my faith in buying those little flat, round, silvered pieces of plastic. As a user of Internet Radio (like JazzRadio.com), I’ve been hearing various new artists and following up by researching what albums they’ve done, and then reading reviews before deciding which ones to buy. Even at secondhand

prices from Amazon, you’ll still pay $10-20 per disc including delivery. At my sedate pace it’s still easy to run up a $30-$50 bill per month — some might do that in a week! There are from time to time great bargains, like the complete Mahler set (for people who are into it) on EMI – 16CDs for $48 or a mere $3 per disc, delivered! But quite a few of my single CD purchases have been “on spec”, based on no in-depth auditioning, so anything up to half of them have proven to be below my expectations. So really, I have already been wasting at least what a premium online account costs per month. So access to a really, really wide range of music, even if only at 320k standard, for $12/month and able to be relayed around the home via Sonos, looks pretty reasonable. The only other proviso is that you have enough monthly download gigabytes to spare so that you can use this service freely without panicking about your internet limit running out. It can be quite a shock to get busted back to dial-up speeds!

This will not be the solution for everyone. There will be those who want to go further up the quality scale with Hi-Res audio, and those who will not want to go below CD standard. But I know how popular these services have been in recent years, and now, seeing how the inventory and accessibility has improved, I can’t see it being anything but a roaring success. I’d say the same will be true when Netflix gets going here with its comprehensive movie line-up. Everyone I know who has used it is hooked. It’s fantastic to have a really good music system, and for me it’s even better when I have an unlimited number of new albums I can play any time. It’s a form of addiction, I know, and music remains a legal drug, mostly harmless, and certainly therapeutic. Just as upgrading your audio gear upgrades your music collection, new music refreshes and invigorates your existing system.

STEALTH ACOUSTICS

Newsletter Spring 2012

STEALTH SPEAKERS T

he ultimate invisible speakers, to the delight of all interior decorators, are Stealth Acoustics. The big news is that they have released a new improved range, and the resulting audio quality is better than ever. The new models have an even thinner front panel than the previous series, and the frequency response has been enhanced. Some readers may not know what I’m on about, so here’s a recap of the way they work, how they’re installed, and an overview of the new series. These speakers are inserted into your Gyprock wall, in a carefully prepared opening with just the right spacing on the studs, so some forward planning is

essential. Once in place, the small gaps between them and the Gyprock are filled, they can be painted the same colour as the wall, and become invisible. The basic principle of operation hasn’t changed – the “drivers” are creating sound vibrations by being directly coupled to the front panel, basically one operating as the high frequency tweeter, while a larger one emulates the woofer for lower frequencies. There are no “cones” or “domes” as per normal speakers. All the sound is generated by the interaction of the drivers with the flat panel. The new range comprises a pair of two-way in-wall speaker designs, the LR6 ($849/pair) and the LR8 ($999/pair), which

can be used for music or surround sound. There is a three-way model to give a larger presentation, the LR3 ($1999/pair), and a twin-tweeter model, the SLR8 ($699/each), for those places where a single speaker is all that will fit or is needed, while preserving left/right stereo information. To round off the range there are two bass speakers, a single 8”/20cm equivalent and a twin 8”/20cm, together with a dedicated amplifier – the 255R at $799. More details of all these models can be found on our website, and full specification sheets can be provided if required. These speakers enable a standard of tidy “speakerless” finish impossible to achieve with any other speakers. It is recommended that you consider them early in the planning process for your home build or renovation, and that your builder be advised of the need to space the studs according to the sizing of the speakers. Space savers are also used to ensure that they fit correctly when installed. In return for this extra care, you’ll get a result that will amaze you and all who experience them.

STEREO

Newsletter Spring 2012

STEREO LIVES! W

hy has the LP lasted so long? And valve amplifiers? Stereo generally? Is it that they are special, or just a form of nostalgia? We’d maintain that it’s because quality stereo works so well. Although it’s relatively simple compared to some of the technologies around these days, good old two-channel stereo can sound so good that the fact it’s not surround (and doesn’t have pictures) is actually a virtue for the music lover. There are no distractions. You get right into the sounds that great musicians have created, the feelings they embody in the performance, the almost physical presence of the instruments. With all the attention given to surround sound and video – quite understandable given its entertainment value – it can be forgotten just how good a stereo music system can sound. I’m happy to be able to report, however, that stereo sales continue to do extremely well at Len Wallis Audio. This is helped along by the failure of most outlets to bother with it any more. People come to us saying that most shops can’t sell them a CD player, far less a good straightforward stereo amplifier, or a pair of quality speakers from a specialist speaker manufacturer. Getting a turntable is going to be mission impossible in the vast majority of stores these days. As for great valve amplifiers, well, that too is difficult – difficult to find the right product. There are certainly a lot of “unknown brands” out there on the web. We have had a very good reaction to stocking the Plessis and Prima Luna amplifiers, the latter having a large range and starting off at a very affordable level. Modern valve amplifiers take the worry out of biasing the power tubes for best

26

LWHSpring2012_026 Stereo Lives.indd 26

sound – it is now either automated or easily done with an inbuilt meter in the models we sell. Turntables and valves have been around for a long time, and still hold their places, but these days the digital world is being blended into the stereo one with some very liberating aspects. Putting aside hi-res music files for a moment, the most revolutionary things about the new technologies is the ease of access you now have to almost everything that’s ever been recorded. Apart from the amazing number of CD releases over the nearly 30 years since CD came into being, there have arisen various methods of digitally storing and distributing music around the home. We can quickly find everything in our own collection, and also go online to one of the various subscription libraries that are all the go now. The further you take the equipment quality “stairway to heaven” upwards, the more you’ll appreciate the gains to be made in better players, better DACs and better master copies of the recordings. This side of the digital revolution is still developing, but more material each year is issued on either SACD or in the “download only” HDTracks or other hi-resolution music files, which take about 10GB of space instead of the more modest 600-800MB that a CD requires. Stereo is not just a backward-looking technology. It continues to evolve and look forward as well. Just as artists find new ways to create two-dimensional images, putting paint on canvas remains an artistic mainstay. Good stereo music is part of an immortal art heritage that covers a huge range of work. The only problem is that life’s so short – and there’s so much to explore!

4K SCREENS

4K SCREENS ARE COMING

T

he first so-called 4k screens are starting to appear overseas, and will become more common in 2013. The ongoing march of progress is unstoppable, so what we now call ‘Full’ HD, or 1920x1080 pixels, is going to be superseded (over some years, of course) by Ultra HD, which is 3840x2160 – the total number of pixels increases from around 2 million to 8 million. As usual, there’s no reason to panic about this new development appearing on the horizon. Just as those older 1280x768 screens were perfectly OK until we got 1920x1080 ones, we aren’t exactly slumming it now. Those who want to will be able to upgrade, those who do not want to can carry on quite happily until they feel like making the change. It will be a while before all the pieces are in place, and the discs we play or programs we otherwise access for our screens will not be 4k material for a while yet. And, importantly, not everyone needs it anyway. On an average sized screen you probably won’t notice the difference. In fact we only mention it as the first piece to fall into place may well be your next surround receiver. The new Marantz and Yamaha surround receivers, at least the SR5007/SR6007/SR7007 and the new

Yamaha RX-A“20” series just arriving, are all “future proof” in being capable of handling this increased resolution. Each of the screen manufacturers has 4k screens on the starting blocks for 2013, and some are appearing overseas as we go to print. Cinemas have been using this standard for a while now, and the projector manufacturers can step into the market at any time. The missing piece, or last to arrive, as is often the case, is enough things of Ultra HD standard to play. Remastering of movies will have been underway for a while now, and Blu-ray may adapt to accommodate it, but it depends on having enough storage space or using some smart compression algorithms to get it all down. Multi-layer discs could also help in this regard, as that greatly increases the storage capacity. As mentioned, cinemas have been and will continue to be the ones most in need of this upgrade, due to the large screens they use – you may have seen pixels there! Next will be the larger home theatres, perhaps if you sit close to a big 120”/300cm projection screen. At the lower end of the screen sizes, say up to 65”/165cm, the need is going to be less urgent, in fact some say not needed at all, and even at the larger 80-

90” sizes will depend on the purchaser’s desire to have the best, and the sharpness of their eyesight at close range! Down the track, once you have a large 4k flat screen or projector, your current Blu-rays will be able to be upscaled for some improved results. DVDs benefit (and need to) from upscaling when played back through an upscaling player or in-receiver process. So Blu-ray upscaling will provide something of an upgrade while the (as yet theoretical) 4k releases ramp up. But this is all conjecture right now. We’ll all be watching with interest as the situation becomes clearer over the next 12 months; as soon as we have a meaningful in-store demo for you we’ll announce it. (There may be also a renewed demand for test discs, such as the Spears & Munsil High-Definition Benchmark Blu-ray Disc Edition, from which the lighthouse picture used below is derived.)

SUB-SAT SPEAKERS

Newsletter Spring 2012

SATELLITE OF LOVE

S

atellite of Love was one of Lou Reed’s best known songs, and satellite speakers have been loved for nearly as long. This species of speaker system has enjoyed huge success, owing to the low-visual impact combined with the trick of making them sound much bigger than they are. While Bose built a high profile for their cubes, there are some other products around that achieve genuine hifi quality while not costing much if any more. The Focal Dome sub-sat speakers (pictured above) have been the quality audio benchmark in this class of speaker since they appeared several years ago. It’s a crowded class, as small speakers are hugely successful in the marketplace for cost and low-visual-impact reasons. The vast majority of them are, however, not what we would term hifi quality, and by default they are featured in most of the downmarket “one brand” surround systems that sell mainly on low price. Focal did a lot of research and development

28

LWHSpring2012_028 Sub Sat speakers.indd 28

work before releasing the Dome series, even producing a white paper on the design aspects. Briefly they include the use of superior components for tweeter and woofer, plus a rigid, rounded metal enclosure to ensure that the only vibrations you’ll hear are the ones coming from the speaker drivers, uncluttered by any spurious effects. They sound clearer and cleaner at any volume than their competitors, but also hold their clarity when pushed to louder levels. As one reviewer said: “…the Domes immerse the viewer in whatever they are watching with smooth, accurate and often powerful sound. In two-channel mode the Domes throw an amazing soundstage and sound as good with thrash metal as they do acoustic ballads. Wrap all of this performance in a package that looks like it should be on display in an art museum and you have the Focal Dome system. Needless to say I loved this speaker system. They are as much art as they

are function and because of that, they lead their class. Don’t buy a 5.1 sub-sat system without auditioning this Focal Dome system first.” At $2999 for the 5.1 package they were not expensive compared to other well-known brands, but at the new price of $2599 (thanks to our strong dollar) they are a lay-down-misere best buy. The 2.1 pack is now $1699, while a pair of the Dome satellites can be had in gloss black or white for $899. The Dome subwoofer can also be purchased separately for $899. If you need to shop for something a little cheaper, the Sib & Cub 5.1 system is also a great performer at $1999. Another high performing system of this type is the B&W MT60 system: the M1 satellite has been upgraded to Mk.2 status with improved drivers, and it continues to offer a quality above the majority of satellites on the market. As you’d expect with this company’s products, they are stylish, well made and deliver a balanced and detailed sound. What makes the new offering extra good, however, is coupling the M1s to the PV1D powered subwoofer and getting the lot (a 5.1 system) for $3199. The subwoofer is a unique design and uses rigid 8”/200mm layered (paper/Kevlar/aluminium) drivers facing each way from the circular enclosure, powered by a 400w amplifier. Like the Focal Domes, these speakers are of a high order and can be used very happily for music as well as surround sound. Each M1 is on an adjustable table stand, and they can be rotated on that if you prefer a horizontal presentation, such as for the centre speaker. Optional floor stands can be added if required, or the M1s can be wall mounted. Colours: Black or White.

SOUNDCAST OUTCAST

THE VERY SOCIAL OUTCAST 8

T

here’s no more typical scene during the warmer months around Australia than a gathering by the pool, on the patio or balcony – with the BBQ. Entertaining in that fashion or just organising a casual meal for the family is a way of life, and having some music going is part of the charm. What OutCast does is make it easy to have good sound wherever you are around the home, whenever it’s needed. The OutCast 8 is a portable outdoor full-range speaker system with 8”/200mm subwoofer. There are two sets of 75mm L+R speakers arranged around the top of the circular casing, so the sound

propagates omni-directionally. The subwoofer is down-firing and vented all around the base of the speaker enclosure, and is also omni-directional. Amplification is compact Class D, very efficient and effective, 50w for the subwoofer and 25w x 2 for the high frequencies. The range of the wireless transmission is 80m-100m, while the inbuilt rechargeable battery pack provides sufficient power for 10+ hours of music. There are two types of transmitter, the UAT or “universal” transmitter, and the iCast (pictured above right) which is made as a dock-style transmitter for your iPod or iPhone. The OutCast 8 sells for $1099

with the iCast, $1049 with the UAT. A second OutCast can be added for $950 without transmitter. Control can be exercised via Apple’s control app, or you can utilise the control buttons on the unit itself. Any music player can also be connected directly via the Auxiliary input. Dimensions of the OutCast 8 speaker are 660mm height x 279mm diameter; weight is 11.6kg. Regardless of your musical tastes, be it Al Frescobaldi or something much more recent, the OutCast 8 will deliver it in good shape to wherever you are relaxing or partying. Summertime, and the living is easy....

VIBRAPODS

Vibrapods have been designed with a cunning approach to soaking up the internal vibes that all sorts of players generate with their motors and transport mechanisms, as well as those coming up through the furniture from other things. The Vibrapods ($39.95 per set of 4, plus $5 postage to anywhere in Australia) are replacement feet for your various components which can be attached (after removing the original, screwed-on feet) or on which they can simply sit. The structure is a bit like a doughnut, with external walls of whatever thickness suits the weight of the component, to give more or less resilience. There are five models to accommodate items of various weight: Model 1 (0.9-1.3kg), Model 2 (1.8-3.6kg), Model 3 (3.6-5.46kg), Model 4 (6.358.16kg), Model 5 (9.9-12.7kg). As an alternative to the Vibrapod feet, or even for use in concert with them, there are the Vibrapod Cones which suit heavier items such as amplifiers and speakers, being weight tolerant up to 25kg. Some reviewers have pointed out that the improvements differ from Vibrapod foot to cone, and that in some cases you might want to use both, stacked. Again, given the low price of $11.90 each, no problem. There is no doubt that isolation works, and these are a neat and cost-effective solution.

QED PROFILE CABLES QED make a lot of classy interconnects and speaker cables, some of which are decidedly high-end. They also have the Profile range, which start around $40 for 1-metre stereo interconnects and optical digital ones. Most of them come in 2/3/5m lengths as well, while the subwoofer

interconnect comes in 3/6/10m lengths. Not everybody needs to go to the highend ones – to be honest not every piece of equipment is worthy of it – but getting well-made interconnects like these at a very reasonable price is a great idea that just about everyone can benefit from.

QED MUSIQ THE SIMPLEST TWO-ROOM MUSIC SYSTEM The QED MusiQ two-room system has been overtaken by more modern technologies, but then again, so has the LP and the CD. Like a good old plain vanilla stereo, it remains very useful. The main unit can be placed out of site, requiring power and speaker leads, plus inputs from two sources. Control is via a small keypad in each room; this can toggle between the two sources and adjust volume. We found several of these systems hiding in a dark corner of the warehouse, and are offering them at a fraction of the previous price of $1695. Grab a MusiQ now for just $299 and have some fun with it wherever you care to set it to work.

SPIN-CLEAN There has been nothing in between the cheap cleaning pads of various sorts and the top-line cleaning machines (which can be up around $1000) – until now! The SpinClean Record Washer Mk2 ($135) is now available and has received acclaim from audiophile magazines like The Absolute Sound and Stereophile, among others. It is essentially a narrow tank to contain clean water and a small quantity of special cleaning fluid. Two rollers support the 12” LP (with alternate positions for other sizes) and two brushes in the middle clean while you rotate the record three times clockwise and three times more, anti-clockwise.

The Spin-Clean fluid is applied directly onto the brushes, and as the record rotates the brushes get the dirt and other matter out of the grooves and it goes into the water then, due to the chemical action of the cleaning fluid, sinks to the bottom of the tank. This means firstly that it doesn’t re-attach to the LP, and secondly that you can use the same mixture for more LPs. Each batch of water/fluid additive is said to be good for up to 50 LPs. Your initial batch will be enough for 700 cleans! The fluid contains no alkalines, soap solutions or phosphates, and is bio-degradeable.

MILTY DUOPAD

PLESSIS SPIKES The Plessis spikes can be used under just about any audio equipment you want to benefit from their isolation action. The improvement in sound from players, amplifiers and speakers have been noted by audiophiles for many years, but getting a high quality metal spike of this type at the right price ($15) has been a problem. These are stainless steel, 32mm diameter, with gold plating. If you require it, each can have a protective disc to go underneath and prevent damage to floors or cabinet bench tops, at an additional $10 each for the matching discs. The discs can also be bought separately to go with your existing spikes – having that nice shiny gold finish they’ll look great with most spikes and add lustre to your gear whatever it is.

Everyone who’s using LP but doesn’t want to go for the cleaning machine needs a few cleaning accessories. Apart from the carbon-fibre brush, which is suitable for removing the larger lint and dust particles, you’ll be needing a Duopad for removal of finer dust that the carbon-fibre brush doesn’t pick up, and for the wet cleaning that some (perhaps not all) LPs require. For a full explanation of the fabulous Duopad see the blog entry on our website – it details how you can use the Duopad effectively in either dry mode or wet mode to clean your LPs. It is certainly one of the best little accessories we have found for small-scale, cheap-as-chips cleaning of LPs, and we strongly recommend that you have at least one and a spare!

SPECIAL AUDIO TEST DISCS The Chesky company are famous for their audiophile recording quality, and they are also one of the few who have produced discs that show you what the characteristics of your system are. These discs will give you the tracks specially selected to demonstrate stage depth, imaging, midrange purity, dynamics, bass depth and a host of other things. “The Ultimate Demonstration Disc” (Chesky UD95) on CD gets you started on the “road to critical listening”. For those with SACD players there’s also Chesky SACD343 (hybrid disc, playable on CD players too) which is Volume 2 of The Ultimate Demonstration Disc. These special editions sell for $39.95 each.
