Join the psychedelic ride with this issue's artist whose mind was first blown thanks to a Magic Eye book. How would you describe your works? Serendipitous. I never set out to create something specific. It is a spontaneous exploration of how one image responds to itself and can be manipulated in infinite ways to create something entirely new. Dream travel destination? I'd like to ride a motorcycle across India all the way up to Nepal and just take a year off and wander. Did you read a lot of Magic Eye books as a kid? Actually I did! I was quite young when I got my first book, and I remember I couldn't get my eyes to see the image for ages and it killed me. Everyone else could do it. Then one day I finally figured out how to adjust my eyes and the image jumped out of the page and I fell backwards. Mind blown! I thought it was awesome. What other artists do you admire? First to mind is Storm Thorgerson. He created some of the most unique and iconic album artworks to this day. His artwork for Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon led me to listen to the album which undoubtedly changed my world. Banksy, ISO50 and Leif Podhajsky, as well as street artists Beastman and Anthony Lister always provide my eyes with delights when I catch one of their pieces around the city.

Where did your label name Dolcey and Duke come from? I've always loved duos like Bonnie and Clyde, Thelma and Louise, Mickey and Mallory, Sonny and Cher, Sid and Nancy, Romeo and Juliet. Dolcey and Duke was my version of that many years ago when I started my first ever blog. Over time their characters

developed in my mind and I realised that Dolcey and Duke was the female and male side of myself. Only when I thought about it did I realise that intrinsically I seek balance, harmony in everything I do, and Dolcey and Duke has come to represent that. Besides artworks, what else do you work on? To pay the bills I do graphic design, art direction and some installation work. Although at the moment my main focus is releasing Dolcey and Duke's first range of limited edition artworks on silk scarves, which will be available before Christmas. I have fallen in love with printing on textiles and am working on creating large cushions, bags, and reupholstering vintage soft coverings. What book has blown you away? I read this amazing book about crop circles and their appearance all over the world. The patterns and geometry and scale and size! Amazing. I just love that no one really knows how and why it happens, but this phenomenon is so incredibly fascinating. It gives me that feeling you feel when you are a child and you still believe in magic. Finish this sentence: when people are assholes remember‌ Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. See more of Michelle's work at dolceyandduke.tumblr.com.

MINNA GILLIGAN, 22 Artist / minnagilligan.com

At just 22, emerging artist Minna Gilligan has accomplished so much that it wouldn’t be implausible to think she secretly works alongside a clone of herself. Her creative output is immeasurable, and is surely the cause of various incidences of envy and hair loss among her peers. Since graduating last year from the Victorian College of the Arts, Minna has been running a marathon, passing the paintbrush baton to and from her various artistic pursuits. She divides her days between a part-time position at Art Guide Australia and predominantly working as an exhibiting represented artist and commercial illustrator, having contributed her collage-based works to Rookie, Nasty Girl, Urban Outfitters and ASOS. The philosophy ‘less is more’ is made redundant when it comes to Minna’s choice aesthetic. Heavily inspired by the 1960s and ’70s, she pairs her own colourful and psychedelic illustrations with collage cut-outs from her collection of old books and photographs to build narrative within her work. “I’m a collector, but my mum calls me a hoarder,” she admits. Her collage-based illustrations are not to be likened to inspiration-collages forced upon your average ‘The Secret’ devotee; instead Minna’s work conveys a sensibility and depth that slips between the realm of reality and fantasy. “I want my work to be solid but reflect like a trick mirror,” she says. Which is probably why her art has seamlessly become the perfect visual backdrop for Tavi Gevinson’s online magazine Rookie, where Minna has been a staff illustrator since its inception in 2011. Aside from her art, Minna moonlights alongside fellow artists Jon Campbell and Georgina Glanville in Pamela, a band that recently celebrated its radio debut. “Our sound is really lo-fi, ’60s and folky,” she says. She also frequently collaborates with international photographers Petra Collins and Eleanor Hardwick and, when time permits, takes a break from it all by getting Zen with her all-time favourite movie Sister Act 2 – “It’s better than the original!” Allegedly the gen Y workaholic is a rarity, but Minna Gilligan is certainly one. “I like being busy and I like working hard. I once woke up with a pair of scissors under my back and a skin indentation to match.”
