DREAM THINK LAUGH MAKE

PHOTO HELENA KVARNSTRÖM

Bed socks, big boots, running from the light switch to the bed, blasting your undies with a hairdryer, knitted beanies that cover your eyes, a big coat you’ll grow into (so your mum says), puffy jackets, thermal underwear, marshmallows and hot chocolates, mulled wine, the smell of cinnamon, a lifetime of soup in one season, red noses and blue fingers, porridge on the stove, hibernating bears, saying “You know nothing, Jon Snow”, icy windows, washing your hands in cold water then saying, “You want ice? You got ice” as you cruelly put them on someone’s warm body, blowing steam jets from your mouth, walking on the sunny side of the street, defrosting by a fire, scarves and gloves, litres of tea, long baths, box sets and board games, friends dancing to warm up the night, sketching snowflakes, hankies, writing REDRUM on frosty glass and dressing your cat in a Cosby sweater.

Winter, we’re ready for you.

SKY'S THE LIMIT

She's the comet you can't stop, giving convention a run for its money. Meet the wild card of pop, Sky Ferreira. WORDS JANA ROOSE

Sky Ferreira walks into a high school cafeteria and has no idea where to sit. Tray in hand, she looks to the jocks and cheerleaders – and would rather strangle herself with her backpack strap. She’s too self-aware for the nerd table; she has too much ambition to be a burnout. The drama club demands just a little too much jazz hands. This kind of scenario is possibly half the reason Ferreira dropped out of her actual high school at age 15. Impossible to pigeonhole, the nearly 22-year-old model, singer, actor, rebel, and clumsy oaf (see 60 stitches in her right shin from falling down a stage shaft while supporting Miley Cyrus on her Bangerz tour) has never quite fit in anywhere. In the lead up to giving school the flick, Skye “Ferris Bueller” Ferreira skipped more classes than she attended, taking buses to suburbs of LA to drift in record stores, stalk record producer and Runaways manager Kim Fowley, whisper song ideas into the tape recorder she kept around her neck, then go home in the afternoon and sell her parents a tall tale about how great her history test on King Derek the Third went. While her parents were putting together the fact that there has never, in all the world, been a King Derek, upstairs in her room Ferreira was recording demos and uploading them to MySpace. Of course, at some point there would be the inevitable call from the principal, Ferreira’s parents would move her to a new school, and the cycle would lather, rinse, repeat.
