Some can't resist snapping their feet or food, but this photographer's particular bent is for all things green.
Do you remember the first photo you took that you thought was good? No I don’t, and I do not think that very often. I sometimes think certain elements in the picture are good and try to analyse what makes a photo appealing or not. Which came first for you, plants or photography? Photography came first. Plants are my current obsession. Why plants rather than animals or people? I own a lot of plants and no animals. Besides that, animals tend to move around. I like the stillness of plants. What does an average day look like for you? Do you have any daily rituals? When I wake up, my husband brings me coffee and I write my morning pages in bed. (The 'morning pages' is an exercise from the book The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron). After that every day is a different journey, but it always involves shooting, processing and editing photographs. What do you like about living in Amsterdam? Amsterdam is a relatively small city, everything I need is nearby, I can go anywhere by bike. There are a lot of interesting museums and artist initiatives, and festivals in the summertime. We have a lot of cultural diversity which I think is nice, and the people over here are mostly tolerant, which is really great.

How do you unwind after a long day? I unwind reading a book. I also like to draw, embroider and arrange flowers, although I almost never actually do those things.
What were you like as a kid? A crafty one. And always moving the furniture around in my room. Trying to make a cosy, harmonious space. What jobs have you done? I’ve worked several years as an editor at various publishing houses after receiving my master's degree in psychology. How important is the atmosphere of your workspace? That's very important. Light creates the atmosphere, while inspiring images and objects make me feel more creative. My space is filled with thrift finds and plants – they live, change and purify the air. What was the last thing that made you smile? My kids make me smile every day. What's something you've always wanted to do? Sing like Adele. What's something you've never wanted to do? Go on stage. What’s the best compliment you’ve received about your work? Sometimes people tell me they’re inspired by my work. That's the ultimate compliment. What does this year have in store? Floral design. Jay Dart thedart.ca My name is Jay Dart (aka Granduncle Jiggs). I’m a drawist/ wanderer. I live in a hamlet outside Toronto, Canada (aka elsewheres). My favourite thing about where I live is being faraway and its best-kept secret is the yawnder lights. During the day you can find me working or drawing or herding my kids, while at night I’m usually drawing after my kids go to bed. My motto is keep on wanderin’. When I’m in a good mood the sun is a-shinin’ and when I’m in a bad mood the wind is a-blowin’. I was the type of kid who drew paracosmic worlds and played hockey. My
favourite thing about being outdoors is wandering. My tree house password would be squirrel tears. If someone tried to cut down my tree, I’d grow a new one. My tree house’s soundtrack would be weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. My tree house’s resident animal companion would be a fox named Floyd. The three essentials I’d want in my tree house would be: paper, pencil and eraser. If I could hang with anyone in this tree house it would be my wife and kids because they’re the best.

BRICKS & MORTAR I live with my boyfriend Jackson Love, a musician and audio engineer, our pup Rue and our turtle George. Rue is a Catahoula Leopard cross Kelpie that we adopted from the RSPCA four months ago. We live in a two bedroom house in Marrickville in Sydney’s Inner West. We weren’t really thinking of leaving our apartment in Bronte, but for some reason we thought, ‘let’s just have a look’ and stumbled on this place. We inspected it and fell in love. FAVOURITE SPACE I love our living area. It’s the central focus of our home, mentally and physically. We chose not to have a television and it’s definitely one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. Instead of zoning out we use the space to hang with each other, listen to the radio and just enjoy each other’s company. I WISH FOR... Bigger windows and more skylights! Lack of light is generally the big problem with most inner city homes. If we owned it I would be opening up the living area onto the terrace to give it a more open plan feel, and putting in a beautiful garden. CITIZENS OF STYLE My best mate Lynden and I started Citizens of Style as a way of being able to create our own images, be our own bosses and most importantly, work with each other. We work collaboratively, creating images and video for editorial and commercial clients as well as developing content for social media. I style, he take-a-the photo.
