EDITORIAL DON'T GIVE ME AURAL BRITTANY ROSE
Did you know that there are different kinds of learning styles? I'm a visual learner — I get to class, write the paper code in a coloured pen (which corresponds to my colour-coded timetable) and highlight the corners of the refill in the given paper's colour: one class is purple, one pink, another is blue and the fourth is lime green. Nexus stuff is orange, and general life activities are yellow so my wall planner and diaries are a mess of colour blocks that only I can make sense of. I am absolutely not an aural learner. Mnemonic devices don't work well for me at all - as a child, singing times tables was a futile and ultimately pointless attempt at rote learning because I just suck at listening. Like, I really do. You can tell me something three times and I'll still forget if I don't write it down or read it in a message. I have to see shit to retain it. The above inadequacies coupled with a dodgy understanding of rhythm and an inability to acknowledge that I'm possibly tone deaf are my excuses for not being a certified Music Person. I go blank whenever someone asks me what music I like, and can only ramble vaguely about 90s pop (think Britney, No Doubt and the Spice Girls). I'm also fairly incapable of making song requests outside of screaming "GAGA!" semi-ironically anytime I'm out at The Bank and the poor band take a breath between songs. I find myself enjoying or appreciating artists for the way they visually communicate mood, tone, narrative or theme through video clips, fashion and live performance (I find Sia's approach to anonymity super interesting and definitely cried the first time I watched the video to 'Elastic Heart'). Anything by FKA Twigs (who I saw at Laneway 2015) is an absolute fave to the point that I spent $150 getting two posters and a 'Papi Pacify' tee sent from the UK. That woman can vogue as though she's a flexi ruler, and her style is to fucking kill for. If you feel like a 16 minute visual journey from angler-fish-jewellery-witch, past blow-up-doll-fucking creeps (with a pit stop at double denim), finishing at a birth scene in a white van, then watch her 16 minute video for EP M3LL155X. Basically, the gist of what I'm saying is that I'm wholly uneducated on the subject matter of this issue's theme — Music. So I asked my fave Deputy Editor, Lyam, to create some music content — check out his interviews with people who have more rhythm than I've got, including recent Laneway act and up-and-coming NZ Cool Kid, Lontalius (pg.16). If you are a Music Person then check out live music photographer Ngamihi Pawa's Covered profile (pg.15), educate yourself on the local music scene thanks to Arpie Shirehorse's guide (pg.18), or read our interview with music blogger Rob Shirlow who started Hamilton Underground Press (pg.20).

Hello #letuce Why are students paying for parking? Where does this money go? Staff party at the end of the semester? Sounds like a crime scene of questions to be honest. Is the perception of students and "millennials" as apathetic at worst, and online slacktivists at best accurate? No, I do think that the older generation always has a bad attitude towards the younger generation *laughs*. But, you know, all of those accusations have been levelled at all generations — you're either too radical or not radical enough, doing too much or not doing enough. The problem we have at the moment is that we now have another generation of young New Zealanders who are caught up in increasing cost just to get by so they are having to pay for their own education, having to save for their own superannuation, it's much harder to establish a financial base — especially in regards to buying their own home, so there are increased costs and increased pressures on young people now that the Baby Boomer generation never had to face. Often the Baby Boomer generation just does not understand how different and difficult life is for the younger generation now. We don't want to create some kind of inter-generational war. What we're trying to do is make sure older people understand that things are significantly different for younger people and it is much harder to get ahead. Older people, we have a responsibility to make things better and to work with young people around the question: "What is the future of Aotearoa going to look like?" What are the concerns, the environmental concerns, the economic concerns, the social concerns — and then how do we put in place the systems that will work for them

Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei will be visiting campus with Marama Davidson to talk "freezing flats, huge loans and having no money", so we thought we'd take the opportunity to get some more political interviews in the news section. If only a right wing party would visit campus so we could interview them — oh, that's right, John Key was here for the opening of the new Law Block and didn't even say hi. You and Marama Davidson will be visiting the University of Waikato campus on the 9th of May — what are you hoping to gain from discussions with students? Marama and I want to talk with students — and others who might want to come — about the housing issues they're facing in Hamilton; but also, generally about the issues of inequality that they're seeing and what they think are the solutions to it. We have extensive policy on dealing with inequality and housing and poverty issues and we're pretty confident about that policy but it's always good
sure that everybody has access to the most education that any individual wants to pursue. Some people just want to get to sixth form and leave and that is fine, it is entirely honourable. Others want to spend their lives deep in the bowels of academic institution, it's perfectly fine too, because they all make a contribution to the wellness of the community. We support full funding for tertiary institution, and not just tertiary education but from early childhood right through. Older people need to have access to education too — education is a lifelong pursuit. That's not to say there isn't a personal benefit, of course there's a personal benefit but there's also a societal one, and society, the community, needs to take responsibility for it. We have to make sure that at every point there is an opportunity for an individual to make a contribution to their community and it will change over time so we have to have a system that is properly funded and flexible enough to deal with people's changing life circumstances.

The Meteor Theatre was gifted to the community by HCC in 2014 "with a list of KPIs and the condition that we must do the earthquake strengthen." The Trust has been reporting to the council and at the end of the second year have "already achieved all the KPI's set down for the entire three years." Over the past 2 years the Trust has raised $750,000 from community funders and supporters including Hamilton City Council, Lotteries Community Grants, Donny Trust, Trust Waikato, Fuel Festival Trust and other individuals, towards the capital building works. The Meteor's Technical Manager, Alec Forbes, states: “We put the building’s survival into the hands of the community. We have not asked before. We ask now”. So who is responsible for the creative community in Hamilton? We asked our Arts Expert, Peter Dornauf for his thoughts on the matter: Why are creative arts (such as theatre) important to society? The arts often tell the truth, say things out loud that people might be afraid to say otherwise. In that capacity they are crucial to a healthy society. They, like the court jester, are able to point the finger and get away with it. It's why dictators don't like the arts and often suppress them.
NEWS GIVE A LITTLE TO THE METEOR BRITTANY ROSE
Who should pay to support theatre and arts? Individual, community or government? All three groups should and do pay. The individual does through their taxes. They do again at the door. Both local and national government have a civic duty to support the arts.
The Meteor theatre requires approximately $600,000 in order to ensure its doors will remain open and the building remains with One Victoria Trust, rather than being returned to the Hamilton City Council (HCC).

SPORTS OPINION HAPPY ENDINGS: COMING UP FROM BEHIND TOM COLLOPY
It's a fairy tale season with a happy ending in sight for the City of Leicester and their fans worldwide. At the start of the 2015/2016 premier league season, Leicester City were 5000/1 underdogs with bookies to win the league and 3/1 to be relegated. PREZ SEZ WSU GETS EXTROVERTED INDULA JAYASUNDARA
When my team and I stepped into our roles on the 1st of January we had barely made contact with our neighbouring student representative bodies. Changing this perception of working in silos has been a big part of my team’s vision for the WSU. This year we have worked tirelessly not only on mending our internal partnerships and affairs but a large part of our focus has been to bolster our partnerships with groups external to our organisation. Our focus on reinforcing external partnerships in 2016 has opened doors to a lot of opportunities. Within a span of four months we: 1) are collaborating on a national campaign with the Students’ Association of Waikato Institute of Technology (SAWIT) and Waiariki Institute of Technology Students’ Association (WITSA); 2) have resolved all disputes with NZUSA and joined the national body as associate members; and, 3) have hosted our first Inter-Union Hui since 2009, which was attended by six student associations from all corners of the North Island. It is extremely important for us to understand that our battle is not against other student associations, but with forces that deprive our students of their well being and standards of living;

what better way to fight this battle than with a unified student voice? As a result of these circumstances a platform has been created for the two student associations in Hamilton to be actively involved in raising the issues that matter to students through the local body elections. This year looks very promising so far but let us not get ahead of ourselves; there’s much more to be done. On a final note I’d like to congratulate all the graduates for reaching a huge milestone. Give yourself a pat on the shoulder and thank yourself; it most certainly was not a walk in the park. If you found it nerve-wracking to get on that stage in the hope you didn’t trip and fall; watch this space next week to hear about how I expected to sit with my mates but ended up sitting on that stage instead. I was scared shitless. 9

POETRY GRAFFITI (AND OTHER POEMS) BY SAVANNAH BROWN BRITTANY ROSE
Savannah Brown is a 19 year old vlogger who gained exposure on YouTube with her slam poem What Guys Look For In Girls and she has self-published a little book of poems on the everyday. Brown has a slight (and totally endearing) speech impediment and a weird, almost transatlantic accent; you can't quite tell if she's British or American, but you can tell that you have a gigantic crush on her when you watch her videos. Or perhaps that's just me. Some of the poems in the anthology are ones she's read on her channel which transforms reader experience — her voice and speech patterns, the kinds of pauses and intonations she uses come through thanks to line breaks and fragmented sentences. This really is the poetry of a contemporary, young writer — it's not bogged down by pretentious wordiness, rhyme or meter, although she does employ assonance sparingly which adds a rhythmic momentum. The poems are short, and every word counts in this free verse where conventions of grammar and punctuation are disregarded — there isn't a capital letter in sight.

Obviously poetry is not for everyone, though I would suggest that if you find

poetry tricky to enjoy this might be a place to start: binge watch Savannah's videos and familiarise yourself with her voice, and then nibble at the book — one poem at a time. My recommendation is 'Burgundy Walls'.
On the stage of the Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco, 1976, one of the most marvellous performances in the history of popular music took place. The Band, possibly the greatest band of the 1960s (although I’m sure a certain Doctor in the Throughout the 1960s, The Band had established themselves as

Martin Scorsese, sensing the cinematic potential of their last performance, insisted on documenting it. Joined on stage by a number of guest stars including Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Muddy Waters, The Band delivered an astounding performance. Scorsese captures it all with clarity, precision and
Now I am a pretty big Star Wars nerd, and when I heard about this game it’s safe to say I was abnormally ecstatic. TV SHOW LOVE BRITTANY ROSE
Love is a Judd Apatow directed Netflix original and it's watchable, but not particularly good. I watched the entire first season in a few days, but definitely paid more attention to my phone from about episode three onwards. Set in LA, the series follows two hopeless singles, Mickey, a flakey stoner (played by Gillian Jacobs — Community's Britta), and the socially awkward Guss (played by Paul Rust, a noone with a big nose). The only mildly interesting thing about the series is that it casts both Mickey and Guss as the protagonists, and they each roughly share screen time (though I suspect Guss' storyline hogs the script a little). Love offers insight into character motivations and avoids conventional romcom tropes. They are both protagonists, but they're each utterly unlikeable in their own ways — each of them are selfabsorbed and self-interested. Guss tries to pull the nice-guy card when he's actually a dick, and Mickey is incredibly inconsiderate towards her adorable flatmate, Bertie, who has an unconvincing Australian accent.
FOOD GREY GARDENS EMMA NYGARD
The first and second episode were really enjoyable — and initially Mickey is really relatable (I'm sure Guss would also be relatable for some). She's a chill chick who gets a little wastey and has bad luck with dudes. But as the relationship with Guss unravels because they're both shit at communicating and have fuck all common ground it's clear that the title of the series is intended to be ironic. They should probably rename it Narcissism.

It’s only a matter of time before these names are in lights, or at least attached to a viral video on Facebook. Have a quick read and then jump on Soundcloud and expose yourself to talented New Zealanders this Music Month.
LONTALIUS With 4,000 Facebook followers you may be fooled into thinking that Lontalius is a small time musician, a teenager messing about making music in his bedroom — you'd be wrong. His presence is growing within the NZ music scene, from his chilled, near melancholic performance at Laneway in February to his recent release of his debut album, I'll Forget 17, this 19 year old is putting the rest of us to shame with his increasing success. He opened for that cool-in-the-2000s band Death Cab for Cutie when they were in the country and is increasingly catching attention overseas, even gaining airtime on UK's BBC Radio 1. Lontalius spoke to Lyam even though he is probably far too cool for us (he's been interviewed by killer magazine, Dazed and Confused) and we gained insight into his obsessions: coffee, clothes and boys. Where did you grow up? Island Bay, Wellington. What do you listen to on the daily? Mostly myself. Who would you say influenced your sound? Wilco, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Nils Frahm, The-Dream. What are some of your musical guilty pleasures? I don't believe in guilty pleasures but I do feel a little guilty about how much I like John Mayer. If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be? I wanna be on a Beyonce album. Everyone does too, I guess, but she's unbeatable as an artist and a singer. What have you been working on lately? I've been working on the second Lontalius album in Los Angeles, and at home too. Recently you've been in the Red Bull Studios with Japanese Wallpaper, can we be expecting some fresh collaborations? I hung out at the studio with him for a few days but we didn't really make much music. I'm sure I'll end up doing something with him sometime though, we share demos with each other all the time. Other than music what do you spend most of your time doing? I drink coffee, think about music/clothes/boys

We write features on bands and artists and publish them online and in our zine which comes out every couple of months. We also record podcasts featuring local bands and bands that will play at our shows. Why was HUP formed?
We generally only put shows on at Nivara Lounge and The Meteor — both are hugely supportive of what we are doing. We love what The Hum 106.7FM has been doing to support Hamilton music too, setting up a station that plays music only by Hamilton bands. We are lucky to work with Ngamihi Pawa too — she takes some incredible photographs of the bands on stage.

YOUR SPACE 14 PRETTY PL The quaint picket fence tricks you into believing this lil cottage will belong to a domestic goddess, but the unvacuumed carpet and half drunk wine in the fridge lends to imagining a girl crying on the wooden kitchen floor in red lipstick and a 1950s-style full circle skirt Conclusive evidence points to the residents struggling to let go of the past — years worth of magazines that should probably have been recycled long ago line the horizontal bookshelf. At first glance the windowsill hosts a healthy mint plant, but closer inspection evidences an eclectic mix of unnecessary crap including (but not limited to): shot glasses, curtain hooks, light bulbs, coins, block letters, amethysts and stray drill bits. —

But then they decided to complicate the proceedings, and next thing you know, Crash is controlling mutant monsters before promptly being cancelled, and Spyro doesn’t even have his own series anymore, instead being used as part of an ensemble in Skylanders. "No more," I say, "Enough!" It’s not that hard. Go back to the original designs, don’t try punk up the character designs and try make them look cool, either, like they tried the past. One of the reasons I loved Crash so much was his stupid, goofy face! And it’s fine for Spyro to be a cute little purple dragon, he can still burn Ripto to a crisp.
