ARCHITECT AS A DIRECTOR

Architecture is an ever-present form of visual storytelling. So I think it has a lot of aspects in common with cinema. The built environment has the ability to capture the history of a place and tell that story through space. Architecture forms a visual, spatial link between the past, present, and future, becoming a point in the timeline of a place and culture.

MERSIN FREE ZONE

AN OPEN SOURCE URBANISM

ACADEMIC TERM: DESIGN STUDIO 401 | 2022 FALL

PROFESSORS: ONUR YÜNCÜ, EVREN BAŞBUĞ, BAŞAK UÇAR, ESATCAN COŞKUN, ESER KÖKEN İŞLEYİCİ

TEAM MEMBERS: ARDA ARAPASLAN, FATMA SENA KAYA

TYPE: URBAN PLAN

CONCEPT

Free zones are the zones where bureaucratic procedures, legislation and restrictions necessary for trade are partially or completely excluded. They are especially ideal for ports, airports and areas close to them, where transportation is generally easy. Mersin Free Zone is the first free zone opened in Turkey. While this freedom has been provided for goods for many years, why shouldn't it be provided for people? Can there be special free zones for people? Mersin's population is consisting from multiple cultures and it deserves freedom

of; thinking, moving, deciding, and most importantly, freedom of creating. Think that it’s like a game. A giant one… Our roles as designers are only consulting and observing. To achieving that, an open source urbanism has been proposed by using the latest 3D printing technology and pushing it's limits. With scaled-up 3D printers becoming an organizer in the city, a new open, dynamic, flexible and organic city has occured around the train station. Welcome to the new Mersin Free Zone for people!

THE BREATH

REVIVAL OF MOHAIR INDUSTRY

ACADEMIC TERM: 2021 FALL

PROFESSORS: SERAY TÜRKAY COŞKUN, CAN AKER, HEVES BEŞELİ, ÖZGÜN ÇAKIR, MELİS ACAR

TYPE: URBAN FACTORY

SITE: ULUS, ANKARA

BACKGROUND

In the Ottoman period, Ankara emerges as an important trade center of Anatolia. In Ankara, which specializes in Angora Goat breeding, sof, a fabric woven from the mohair obtained from these goats, has an important place in the economic and social life of the city. For centuries, it was a

leader both in the Ottoman Empire and in Europe, but it has been seen that it has lost this position since the beginning of the XIX. century. The most important reason for this loss is that the British became the leader in the weaving industry in the post-Industrial Revolution period and started to raise

Angora goats in Africa. In a pointed move, an Urban Factory was proposed next to the Historical Ankara Castle. The project aims to be an important landmark in the region for the daily visitors as well as reactivating the production and trade of mohair industry in Ulus.

MANIFESTO

Life is born from the ground, for ages, different cultures and religions have tried to teach us that the sky goes beyond something we can understand, to believe there is a connection between heaven and earth that inspires us to search for the light and value the shadows, in both of them we can find shelter and warmth, it’s a universal duality in every

culture in order to find serenity in everyone’s soul, a peace inside us and in everyone that surrounds us. In a geographic area like Baghere, a very diverse area socially speaking, there must be a spiritually balanced architecture, a physical point of reunion in which you can find harmony in cultural development, in an artistic and educational way for those who interact there. Instead of actually building something, our proposal is based on coming back to the ground and to rise to the sky; then, not to actually build something but to come back to life’s base: earth. The essence. This is how we project a space that allows to make more flexible spaces through different levels without any physical barriers, creating and inclusive amphitheater for cultural, artistic, trading activities, or simply just interaction in a public refuge.

MANIFESTO | 18

The earth is what we all have in common.

PATHWAYS

In addition to the existing pathways, new pathways proposed by thinking about the shortcuts. Main strategy for the roads was collecting people from the residential areas around the site easily. A landmark of the village should be the most accesible building.

SITE: HACI BAYRAM VELİ SQUARE, ANKARA

PARTNERS: HAYA TAHBOUB, ARDA ARAPASLAN, ÖZLEM CEBECİ, ELİF ZEYNEP DÜZYOL

CONCEPT

Hacı Bayram Mosque is in Ulus located adjacent to the Temple of Augustus. This togetherness of different cultures inspired us and we questioned the meaning of leniency. We interpreted the leniency as hard to reach, a very valuable objective. Because of that, we

designed a series of challenging experiences that reach the cozy and comfortable space of leniency, intersection of different cultures. We took references from Ulus while deciding on these challenges. Whole structure act like a labyrinth and force people to strive.
