he World Archery Festival’s Vegas Shoot is truly unique. If you asked each of the 1610 registered shooters whether they had a chance of winning, nearly 95% would say, “No way!” Why? Because the Vegas Shoot is THE VEGAS SHOOT — the most popular and prestigious archery event in the World. NASCAR’s counterpart to the Vegas shoot is the Daytona 500. Both events are held early in the year, rather than as seasonending championships, and both offer showcases for new equipment and new faces in their sport. Just to be in the Daytona 500 or the Vegas Shoot is often an once-in-a-lifetime achievement. The main difference between the two events, however, is that one does not have to qualify to be in the Vegas Shoot. Everyone is invited ... regardless of skill level. We’re not perfect, however. With increasing participation each year, the Riviera Hotel and Convention Center is approaching limits on available rooms and venue space. It’s conceivable that either a fifth line be added on Friday and Saturday, or that there will be a registration cut-off limit. Neither answer is palatable. Theoretically, the current limit is near 2000 shooters for four lines, but with like styles shooting together on same line, the practical limit is somewhat less. Unofficial practice lanes are at a premium, and the thought of practicing outdoors is not pleasant, especially this year with the cold wind. Except for open practice Thursday afternoon and evening, the lack of practice space on weekends is the biggest complaint. Yet, they keep coming back — year after year, and in increasing numbers. This year, a new Novelty Round has replaced the 3-Star Tour Marked 3-D Round. The round consists of five, three-arrow, ends at 40 yards. The target is the single-spot or 3-spot Vegas face. There is a Money Division and a Trophy Division at each of the 3-Star venues, Las Vegas, Louisville and Hartford. On Sunday at Hartford, those with the top 32 aggregate scores (Money and Trophy Divisions combined) from all three venues, will compete in a Shoot-Down Round. The purse could be $5000, depending on 2008 participation. Unfortunately, there’s insufficient space at the Riviera Convention Center to hold the 40-yard Novelty Round indoors. It was held in a reasonably protected parking lot adjacent to the Convention Center, but rain and high winds made the participation less than expected. We’ve been assured that the Louisville and Hartford Novelty Rounds will be held indoors. ROUND ONE, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22ND

No less than 64 archers in seven divisions shot perfect 300’s on Friday. Fifty-two 300’s were shot in the Championship Freestyle Male Division alone. At the Championship level, ﬁrst, second and third place ties are broken by a shoot-off, and not by total Xcount. Nevertheless, a high X-count on Friday is a sign that you’re a favorite to make continued on pg. 6 Archery Magazine April / May 2008 5

Sunday’s shoot-off. Bob Eyler’s 300 with a nearperfect 29 X’s was top on Friday, followed closely by Jim Despart and Keith Trail with 28 X’s. Scott Starnes, Dave Cousins, Chance Beaubouef, Braden Gellenthien, and Jedd Greshock had 27 X’s. The X-count for the balance of the ﬁfty-two 300’s in this division ranged from 26 down to 18 — all with a chance to make the ﬁnals. Six perfect 300’s were also shot in the Freestyle Flights; namely, Seneca Nunez, Derrick Poet, Mark Jackson, and Steven Gatto from the US, plus Mario Angel Gonzalez from Mexico and Simon Dingle from England. They were joined by Steve Boylan and Paul Stephens, Championship Senior Freestyle Division; Jeff Human, Championship Bowhunter Freestyle Division; John Wheeler, Bowhunter Freestyle Flights; England’s Nicola Simpson, Championship Female Freestyle Division; and the youngest of the

“perfects,” Garrett Ayersman, Youth Male Freestyle. In addition the those shooting 300, other adult Friday leaders in the Championship Divisions included: Rick Stark, 290, Barebow; Ashley Butler, 298, Female Crossbow; William Prim, 299, Male Crossbow; Jeff Fabry, 298, Male Freestyle Limited Compound; Jennifer Nichols, 288, Female Freestyle Limited Recurve; and Scott McKechnie, 296, Male Freestyle Limited Recurve. Sixteen of the eighteen Youth Divisions were represented at this year’s Vegas Shoot. ROUND TWO, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23RD This second of three days is when all shooters get to shoot with their competition, as well as the final day for all Cubs, Youth and Young Adults. Those remaining perfect with 600’s through the second day of competition were reduced from 64 to 20 — all in the Championship Freestyle Male Division. In addition, there were forty-eight 599’s distributed among five Divisions. Based on a 56 X-count, Jim Despart, Bob Eyler and Chance Beaubouef led the Championship Freestyle “600” parade. The X-count for the remaining seventeen still-perfect ranged from 55 to 44 — all with a chance to win on Sunday. Thanks to 300’s on Saturday, Tim Ewers and David Gravlin passed Jeff Human and Eric Griggs (who also shot 300) for the Championship Bowhunter Freestyle lead. Tiffany Reeves also shot a 300 on Saturday to tie Nichola Simpson with 599 in the Championship Female Freestyle Division. Scott McKechnie slipped four places while Sweden’s Magnus Petersson jumped into the Championship Male Recurve lead. In the Championship Senior Freestyle Division, Steve Boylan maintained a one point lead over Paul Stephens and Ed Reichert, who shot a 300 on Saturday. All other Friday leaders in the Championship Divisions held on to their leads Saturday. The nearly 200 Youth shooters completed their rounds on Saturday morning. There were some very fine aggregate scores shot, most notably Shaun Larsen’s 597 in YAMFS, Paige Pearce’s 593 in YFFS, Garrett Ayersman’s 596 in YMFS, Ernesto Boardman’s 582 and Pedro Martinez’s 581 in YMR, Rodolfo Gonzalez’s 586 in CMFS, and Tono Kohji’s 565 in CMR. ROUND THREE, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24TH Virtually every sport has their crowd-pleasing way of breaking ties at the championship level, but the Vegas Shoot is rather unique. While Xcount is used to determine the order of finish in the non-championship divisions and flights, all Vegas Championship shooters tied for first place after ninety arrows, not considering X-count, must face an end-by-end shoot-off in front of a very large and boisterous audience. The Vegas shoot-off rules are as follows: After two ends of sudden death using standard Vegas scoring, the third and subsequent ends are scored with the X-ring as a “10.” All other “gold” hits are scored as “9’s.” This year, the sole shoot-off needed was in the continued on pg. 8 Archery Magazine April / May 2008 7

PERFECT PRACTICE, PART 2

The Do’s and Don’ts of An Accelerated Learning Curve

Due to the length of this subject it has been broken down into three parts. Part 1 appeared in the previous issue. The third part will appear in the next issue.

s stated in the last article, consistently hitting what you aim at with a bow and arrow is really hard to do! This “predictable accuracy” that eludes so many of us is an attainable goal, but it’s never really achieved or maintained without endless hours of practice. For those of you who would rather “pray for luck,” here’s an old archery saying . . . “It takes a lot of luck to succeed with a bow and arrow . . . the more you practice, the luckier you seem to get!” It follows that if we’re going to have to practice, we might as well make it count. Like most good archers eventually discover . . . practice does not make perfect . . . perfect practice makes perfect! The best way to do that is to have a qualiﬁed coach keep you on track. By the way, besides teaching the shooter’s school, I also do private and group lessons at my home. The following is Part 2 of a uniquely productive and accelerated practice regimen. These “super sessions” are for serious bowhunters and target archers. With the proper dedication, these do’s and don’ts will greatly accelerate your learning curve and your level of understanding and accuracy

with a bow and arrow. • DON’T waste time practicing scenarios that won’t happen. If you are going bowhunting for whitetail this November, from a treestand in zero degree weather, you won’t be very well prepared by shooting at a 3-D target on level ground, in shorts and a tshirt in August. • DO try to duplicate whatever situation you are preparing for as closely as possible. You may not be able to duplicate the weather conditions, but you can duplicate most of the other factors. Practice from the same kind of treestand, at the same height. Wear the same clothes, shoot the same arrows and broadheads, shoot at dawn and at dusk (under low light situations), shoot in the rain, shoot your backup bow, shoot from a sitting position, etc., etc. If you are a bowhunter, don’t shoot at the kill zones on 3-D animals. Most are not anatomically correct at the present time. Pick a spot, where the real vitals are, and aim at it. Find out what you and your equipment will do under the above conditions . . . before you ﬁnd out the expensive and hard way. You may have to shoot straight down, or pull your bow back while twisted around or sitting down. Or, you may have to draw and shoot after running to cover after a long stalk. Be prepared! Take an egg timer and a magazine with you into the treestand. Set the timer for ﬁfteen minutes and read the magazine until the timer goes off. Shoot one shot . . . then climb down! Do the

same thing the next day! I’ll bet the second day you’ll take more time! If you are a 3D or target archer, simulate the stress of a tournament as closely as possible. Shoot against your buddies. Shoot the same number of arrows as you have to in the tournament, and score them as they will be scored. Put some pressure on yourself! Shoot for a Pepsi or dinner, or the registration of your truck . . . whatever gets you stressed or your adrenaline ﬂowing! If you are a bowhunter or 3D shooter, practice with a good rangeﬁnder. your sights with it, and use it to double check your results. If you don’t check the yardage after you shoot and miss, you’ll never know whether you’ve misjudged the distance, or you executed the shot badly. • DON’T try and shoot a dozen arrows at the target in two minutes. This is generally an attempt to overcome anxiety about missing by not taking the time to think each shot through. The shooter tries to put his subconscious on automatic through quick repetitions. He therefore tries to accomplish two things . . . “get in the groove” of hitting the center while “avoiding responsibility” for missed arrows. He’ll usually try to con himself or spectators . . . “Well I missed because I didn’t really take my time. I could have hit it if I wanted to . . .” Yeah, right! Of course, the more arrows he shoots at a time, and the longer he shoots (sometimes two to three hours), the more tired he gets . . . and the more he misses. It’s a vicious circle. If you are practicing on a 5spot target for example, and you are missing on the last one or two arrows most often, there is prob-

ably a good reason. Other than possibly building up anxiety, most people experience this problem because they shoot too fast. Your muscles are like rechargeable batteries. Shooting an arrow expends a certain amount of energy. The muscles need some time and relaxation to fully “recharge.” This keeps them in their “comfort zone.” Most archers don’t allow enough time between arrows. A typical scenario might go something like this . . . you have 100% energy level when you draw your first arrow. By the time the first arrow is drawn and shot, your energy level is down to 85%. If you shoot too fast, by the time you shoot your second arrow, your energy level is only back up to 90%. Once again, if the third arrow is shot too soon, your energy level may only be up to 80%. And, when the fourth arrow is shot, it’s only recharged to 70% . . . and the fifth arrow is only 60% . . . and so on. No wonder your last arrows are not as good as your first! After each shot, you should put your bow in a bow holster or, if you shoot a long stabilizer, rest it on the ground, and let your arms (and the rest of you)

relax completely. Your muscles that are involved in the shot need to be completely relaxed for a sufficient period of time (usually 15 to 20 seconds). The length of time will vary for each individual, depending on age and physical condition. In any case, you must allow your muscles to recharge to 100% after each shot. Your last shot should feel exactly the same as the first shot! • DO shoot each arrow as if it is the only one you are going to shoot today! “Relax . . . reflect . . . and recharge” between shots for fifteen or twenty seconds. You’ll win more often if you try to shoot sixty “one-arrow tournaments” than if you try to shoot one “sixty-arrow tournament.” Remember how you eat an elephant . . . one bite at a time! If you practice putting all your concentration and effort into every shot, not only is it more likely to hit the target, but when that record book buck is standing there broadside, or it’s the last shot of a tournament, you’ll find that the “subconscious well” that we all try to draw from under pressure, is only full of good shots. Stress quality, not quantity! Shoot only five or six arrows at a time, fifteen seconds apart, and if any shot doesn’t feel right, let it down and start over! If you get tired or can’t seem to focus as well as you should, stop for the day. Don’t reinforce failure! If you’re doing well, practice a little longer. Try to put yourself totally into each shot. Thirty to fifty carefully shot arrows per session will do more good than 300 arrows shot quickly and casually. the compound bow. By the early 1970’s, Allen agreed to let other bow manufacturers produce their own compound bows under the Allen license. Upstarts Jennings and PSE were the first to jump on the bandwagon. The traditional recurve bow manufacturers soon followed. By the mid-1970’s, there were about a dozen different compound bow brands on the market, and the competition was quite fierce. There was no better way to convince the public that you had the best bow than to have the top professional archers shoot and win with it. Primarily because the Professional Archers Association prohibited compound bows, the NFAA Professional Division was born in 1973 for those top archers who wanted to compete for cash awards using “unlimited” equipment. At that time, there were virtually no big money tournaments that allowed anything but FITA equipment. The recurve-only PAA continued to have their standalone tournaments, while the NFAA Pros experimented with a few “anything goes” tournaments, most notably the “Lake of the Woods” shoot held near PSE’s headquarters

outside Mahomet, IL. Almost all top competitors at these early NFAA Pro tournaments were sponsored by one of compound bow manufacturer, principally Jennings, PSE and Astro. By 1974, Carroll, Bear and a few others began to sponsor factory teams. Still, unless the recreational archer watched one of these tournaments, or read a magazine advertisement expounding the staff shooter’s winning ways, he probably end up buying whatever bow his local proshop was pushing. Then at the 1976 NFAA National Outdoor tournament at Aurora, IL, the NFAA Pros and their sponsors finally got the exposure they needed. They came up with a winner-takeall, “World Professional Team Championship.” It was held in the late afternoon after each day’s field competition on the practice field behind the Holiday Inn. The format was quite simple. Contributing sponsors put up $500 per two-archer team. Each day’s round consisted of six, fivearrow, ends at 50 yards. In 1976, the target was the experimental NFAA Expert face. Later, it was the 50 cm Hunter face we use today. After Monday and Tuesday, the bottom half of the

teams were eliminated. Then after Wednesday and Thursday, only the top two men’s and women’s teams made the cut for Friday finals. This was my first experience in watching “stadium archery.” The practice field was laid out south-to-north on the east side of the three-story Holiday Inn. There was a grassy bank between the motel and the practice field which provided an ideal spot to watch the action. Then, with favorite beverage in hand, a few hundred spectators cheered their favorite team on to victory. I had no favorite. I was still shooting a recurve in 1976, but was certainly in the market for a new compound bow. The target butts, the spectators, and most of the range were in the shade. Only the shooting line was in the sun. Since most of the Pros shot right-handed with their backs to the sun, the late afternoon glare was no problem — except to left-handed Dean Pridgen. The final two women’s teams were sponsored by PSE and Carroll, while the men’s teams were sponsored by Jennings and Bear. The wasn’t much drama in the women’s finals — PSE’s Eva Troncoso and Nancy Pfeilmeier won handily — but it was another story in the men’s finals. Jennings’ Gary Lyman and Dean Pridgen enjoyed a comfortable six-point margin over Team Bear’s Dave Young and Joe Drury with only two, five-arrow ends to go. Then with one end left, the lead was reduced to two points. Finally, with just two arrows remaining, Team Bear grabbed the winner-take-all $6000 purse by converting a two-point deficit into a two-point victory. Although Dean Pridgen probably won’t admit it, Team Jennings’ hopes went down with

the sun. As the accompanying photo shows, teammate Gary Lyman did his best to shade Dean’s peep sight. The World Professional Team Championship continued using the same format for several years, always in conjunction with the NFAA National Outdoor tournament, but sometimes starting on Sunday instead of Monday. The sponsors changed, too. More bow manufacturers got into the act, and some other companies, like Bowhunters Warehouse and Toxonics, sponsored or co-sponsored teams. Even a few states, like Michigan, joined in. Then in 1986, factory-sponsorship disappeared, and the “teams” competed as either Professional or Adult, with all NFAA shooting styles being recognized. The “winner-take-all” prize money disappeared, too. The Team Shoot slowly became an entertaining,

self-supporting, time-filler at both the Outdoor and Indoor National Championships. It went from being 100% pro, to pro and amateur, to today’s pro with amateur, or, as we know it, the Pro-Am. The “amateur” is really a misnomer. The Pro-Am prize money is awarded without prejudice. Today, the contingency money awarded to top factory shooters more than makes up for losing the old factory team shoot. There’s more “bang-forthe-buck.” If you’ve attended a national tournament, or even looked through this magazine, you’re bound to notice the super-sized contingency checks the factory-sponsored winners are holding. You’ll certainly notice what brand of bow the winner is shooting. I still miss the old Team Shoot, though. Archery Magazine April / May 2008 29

finally understand the true excitement of drawing back on an animal that has no idea that you are there. Being married for 19 years to a “WhitneyHill Award” recipient, I could never understand his desire to hunt. I did know that being outdoors is refreshing for the soul, but the actual hunt and harvest is so much more. After Doug and I went to South Africa for his first safari hunt, I had my first desire to hunt. It did not take me long to purchase my first bow and start practicing for our next trip, 30 Archery Magazine April / May 2008

where I will be a hunter along side of Doug. I knew that I needed to actually harvest an animal. On Wednesday, February 27, 2008, was my chance. Doug and I went to Big Horn Canyon Ranch for my 1st hunt. We came up on two pigs trying to feed out of an empty barrel. I could not have asked for a better target in one pig. He had a pink strip running up and down in the “kill zone”. Perfect to aim at. I stepped out from a bush, with Doug right behind me guiding me through, and I drew my bow back at 23 yards. As soon as I released, Doug told me “perfect shot, he’s dead.”

I was so excited, and at that moment understood Doug more than ever. I had been praying for two nights prior for a good shot, and that all my practice would be precise enough to harvest an animal with one arrow. When it did, I was pumped up. Ready to harvest another. Nothing else came our way and I was quite satisfied with my pig. Being that I don’t work for our living, I was happy to tell Doug “Tonight Mama’s bringing home the bacon.” I look forward to more hunts, especially in South Africa. PFATA News The 2008 Indoor State Championship for the Pennsylvania Field and Target Archers was held Saturday and Sunday, February 16 and 17. The tournament was held at two locations: York & Adams Archers in eastern Pennsylvania and Charleroi Archers in western Pennsylvania. In all, 59 archers participated. York & Adams Archers had 23 participants, while Charleroi Archers had 36. Twenty-four archers turned in perfect scores of 300. All ties were broken by “X” count. The top point producer was Jesse Broadwater, shooting in the Pro Male Freestyle Division. Broadwater posted 300 with 60 X’s and 14 “inside/out” X’s. PFATA’s Outdoor State Championship will be held Saturday, July 19, at Mechanicsburg Archers. Registration forms will be mailed to PFATA members well in advance of the tournament. Mechanicsburg Archers will also be the venue for PFATA’s annual general membership meeting. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, August 16 at 1:30 pm.

Crystal Parker, Director WA-NFAA@washingtonarchery.org Washington State Archery Association Indoor Multi-Color Championship by Linda Parker, WSAA Past President Three sites across the state served as hosts for the WSAA Indoor MultiColor Championship on the weekend of 11-13 January 2008. A total of 145 archers participated, with the largest group at Silver Arrow Bowmen in Mount Vernon. The other locations were Archery World in Vancouver and AS&J Archery in Yakima. Some ﬁne scores were shot, including Mark Eaves (AMFS, Championship Flight) with 599, followed by Ryan Magelson with 597 for second place. A three-way tie for third place at 594 was decided by x-count in favor of Jason Prince. PMFS saw John Heuvel chalking up 598 to slide ahead of Martin Lotz’s 597. On the female side, high marks were set by AF-S Karen Palmer at 585 and PFFS Crystal Parker with 584. We were happy to see large turnout is some special categories – 40 of the participants were Female, 13 were Young Adults, plus nine Youths, seven Cubs, and one PeeWee. Two youngsters took on the new NASP category, one High School and one Middle School. The Blueface Mail-In will run through February and March, with our Blueface Championship on 1-2 March and the NW Indoor Sectional 8-9 March.

We’ll shoot 28 field and 14 animal. Sunday, May 18: Shotgun start at 8:00 am for 28 hunter. Accommodations: All major motels maybe found in northwest Phoenix. Campgrounds: The facility has a campground for both dry and full service. Check in with the Facility at numbers above or www.azgfd.gov/ctc for space availability Miscellaneous Info: Ben Avery is run by the Arizona Game and Fish and has pistol and rifle ranges, as well as archery. There are field ranges, a 15 to 80 yard practice range, and a FITA practice range. If you come in early to practice, use the main gate, and be sure to stop and pay the range fees. Facility opens at 7:00 am Wednesday through Sunday. For the non shooters or after shooting, there are shopping malls within 5 to 10 miles of the facility. Lake Pleasant Recreational Area is about 25 miles west on Carefree Highway. There are any number of other options for entertainment in the Phoenix, AZ area. The weather will be warm to hot. Seven Ways to Remain Focused Put yourself in this situation. There is one target left in the tournament and you are tied for first with another person in your shooting group. He shoots first and scores an eight on a long, hard turkey target. Now it is your turn. What is going through your mind? Are you thinking that you need to hit a ten to win? Are you thinking that you have to at least hit an eight? Are you thinking that you cannot hit a five or you’ll lose? I hope you are not entertaining any of these thoughts. Instead, you need to be focused on using the best form that you are capable of shooting. You have to remain focused on the task that is facing you, which is perfect shot execution. There are many things that can distract archers to the point that they lose their focus. Once this happens, their performance will suffer. Here are some ways to combat the distractions and help you remain focused: • Use pre-tournament preparation. Do not think of the upcoming tournament in terms of winning or having a fabulous score. Instead, think in terms of you making every shot with the best form that you can produce. When practicing, try to shoot every shot with perfect form. Then each time tell yourself that is what you are going to do at the tournament. • Relax. The whole key to being able to execute good form is staying relaxed. Regulate your breathing. Take deep, slow breaths. Constantly remind yourself to drop your shoulders and relax your muscles. • Think performance. You know you can shoot great form. You do it constantly in practice. All you need to do is execute the same shot that you have been practicing. • Do not be concerned with results. Do not put any emphasis on your score or the score of others. You can be concerned about that after the tournament is over. Being concerned about points while competing will distract you from a top performance. • Be totally involved in the moment. Forget the shots that you have already taken and the ones that you are going to face. Only be concerned with the shot that is in front of you. • Do not give shots a more significant value. scenario at the beginning of this article, most of you probably looked at the shot as a win or lose situation. By doing that you place a higher value on the arrow. When you do that too often you try to ﬁne-tune your sight (over-aim) and make a poor shot execution. It is just another shot, so allow yourself to shoot the way you have practiced for months. • Use Mental Imagery. Before releasing the arrow, look at the target and see yourself going through the motions of using perfect form. Let your body and mind feel the shot and then execute that same shot. It is easy to get lost in thought, especially thinking that is not part of the task in front of you. When your mind strays, stop and bring it back to reality. To be a good archer, you have to discipline yourself to stay focused by controlling your thought processes.

2008 NFAA CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS CHANGES Rule changes only. Policy Section changes and Rules Interpretation Committee actions are excluded for simplicity. All changes are effective June 1, 2008, and will be published in the 37th Edition of Constitution and By-Laws, dated June 1, 2008, and available for purchase from NFAA Headquarters CONSTITUTION Page 12, Article III, Section B, Paragraph 2, Subparagraph 2.9. Change subparagraph 2.9 to read: 2.9 Make an effort to send a representative to an annual meeting empowered to act for the state or foreign country on any and all issues before the NFAA Board of Directors while in session or in mail session. Page 18, Article VI, Section F. Add new Paragraph 1 following main body of Section F: 1. Members of the NFAA Board of Directors shall be exempt from paying pre-registration portion of fees at National and Sectional Tournaments. Page 19, Article VII, Section C, Paragraph 2. Delete the third sentence that reads, “This will include any commercial travel fare, any additional lodging expense and $30.00 per day for meals.” Page 19, Article VII, Section C. Add new Paragraph 3: 3. Members of the NFAA Council shall be exempt from paying pre-registration portion of fees at National and Sectional Tournaments. Page 20, Section VII, Section I, Paragraph 1. Add new Subparagraph 1.1 following main body of Paragraph 1: 1.1 Councilpersons are responsible for collecting the scores and fees from their respective Indoor and Outdoor Sectional tournaments, and forwarding same to NFAA Headquarters within fourteen (14) days of the close of said tournaments. Page 25, Article XII, Section B. Change B to read: B. One-Time dues: Individual dues for first time members joining directly through the NFAA shall be $60.00 ($25.00 to be forwarded to the member’s State Association). Family dues shall be $85.00 ($45.00 to be forwarded to the member’s State Association). A family unit is defined as a head of household, spouse and dependents less than 18 years of age. Junior membership dues, as a primary member, shall be $35.00 ($20.00 to be forwarded to the member’s State Association). After the first year of membership, all dues shall revert to the standard billing 48 Archery Magazine April / May 2008

system used by each State Association. Should a new member join the NFAA directly through their respective State Association, the State Association fees used through the billing system shall apply. Page 25, Article XII, Section D. Change D to read: D. Military and foreign dues: Dues for the NFAA for military personnel and foreign nationals belonging to the NFAA affiliated association, or military personnel on transient basis who are not located within the jurisdiction of an affiliated body, shall be $35.00 per year per person and shall include the NFAA’s official publication. Dues for two additional family members shall be $5.00 per person. Additional family memberships shall be $2.00 per person. Transient military personnel shall be serviced from NFAA Headquarters. Page 26, Article XII, Section H. Change H to read: H. Bowhunter dues: The yearly NFAA Bowhunter membership dues shall be $35.00 with $5.00 deposited in the Bowhunter Defense fund, $5.00 returned to the State Association, and $5.00 to the NFAA general fund for administration. The balance will be applied for magazine subscription and individual liability insurance. Additional family membership may be added for $5.00 per year per person. Page 26, Article, Section M. Change M to read: M. Junior Membership fee: Junior membership fee, as primary members, shall be $15.00 per year. No adult may be a second member on this membership. Additional Cub, Youth and Young Adult family members may be added to the primary member for a fee of $5.00 per person per year. Additional members in excess of two shall have a fee of $2.00 per person per year. BY-LAWS Page 28, Article I. After the title “General Rules for Field Archery Games,” add the following (before Section A): The following applies to all Field, Hunter and Animal Rounds. Page 28, Article I, Section A. Add new Paragraphs 8, 9 and 10 as definitions:

10. String dampening device: A devise made to stop the forward motion of the string. Page 28, Article I, Section C. Revise Paragraph 3, add new Paragraph 4, and renumber current Paragraph 4 as Paragraph 5, thusly: 3. In all National and Sectional tournaments using official NFAA rounds, sixteen 20 cm target faces shall be used for the 20-, 25-, 30-, 35-feet and the 11yard shot. The target butt shall be so constructed as to encompass the targets in a 4-by-4 configuration. Where 35 cm target faces are specified, four 35 cm target faces will be used. The target butt shall be so constructed as to encompass the targets in a 2-by-2 configuration. Where 50 cm target faces are specified, two target faces shall be for the 35-yard (Field) and 36-yard (Hunter) fan. The target butt shall be so constructed as to encompass the targets side-by-side or one above the other. 4. In all National and Sectional tournaments using official NFAA rounds where Group 4 animal faces are specified, four Group 4 Animal faces will be used and the target butt shall be so constructed as to encompass the targets in a 2-by-2 configuration. The four faces presented shall be of the same design. Where Group 3 Animal faces specified, two Group 3 Animal faces will be used, either side-by-side or one above the other. The two faces presented shall be the same design. 5. An archer shall not deface his/her target in any manner to include punching a hole, enhancing the X or any other portion of the target in an effort to gain sighting/aiming advantage. Any target so defaced shall be removed by the tournament chairman. Repeated offense shall be grounds for removal of the offender from the tournament. Note: The tournament chairman may have the archer’s name placed on the target, as in indoor tournaments; however, the name will not be on or in the scoring area of the target. Page 30, Article II, Section B, Paragraph 1. Delete Subparagraph 1.1, concerning string and serving color, from Paragraph 1. Page 30, Article II, Section B, Paragraph 5. Change Paragraph 5 to read: 5. Only one adjustable draw check and level mounted on the bow, neither of which may extend above the arrow, and a mechanical type arrow rest and cushion plunger, are permitted. Fixed pin sights may not have more than one pin set for a single distance, and all pins must be set in vertical line plus or minus one (1) millimeter. Page 31, Article II, Section F, Paragraph 1.
