The “New” Vegas Shoot— What a Difference a Year Can Make! Archery’s version of the “economic stimulus package” was found at the 2009 Vegas Shoot: New seating, new electronic scoring, new instant standings on big screen displays, and, ﬁnally, no more complaints about inadequate practice space or time. Thanks to grants from the Easton Sports Development Foundation (ESDF), in addition to some schedule and Novelty Event tweaking by the World Archery Festival, this year’s streamlined Vegas Shoot was acclaimed as the best ever. Yes, the poor economy, coupled with higher travel costs, affected attendance (over 1400) a tad, but you’d never know it if you were in the huge crowd watching Sunday’s exciting, sudden-death, shoot-off among the eighteen Pros tied with perfect 900’s. These eighteen are automatically in the running to win the WAF 3-Star Tour’s One Million Dollars. To win the million, they must shoot 600 with 120 X’s at the Louisville Indoor Nationals, March 14-15, as well as a perfect 1200 at the First Dakota National Bank Archery Classic in Yankton, June .13-14. Electronic scoring is not new to archery — it’s been used in Europe and the Olympics for many years — but the essentially “instant” scoring using the Danage Hand Held Terminal (HHT) is new to the USA and the World Archery Festival. with a four-man international team headed by Erik Kornbek, founder of Danage of Scandinavia. The team set up shop in the Grand Ballroom, and were on-call from Wednesday through Sunday, assuring acceptance of the HHT and success of the Instant Scoring System. Since written instructions on use of the HHT were available at every target butt, and since line judges were trained beforehand to provide assistance, electronic scoring proceeded throughout the tournament with nary a hiccup. One HHT was holstered at each of the seventy, 4-target, butts in the Riviera’s Grand Ballroom. [Because this was test year, the Royale Pavilion was not “wired.”] Each HHT is programmed with the target number and the assigned shooters’ names. After each scoring end, the shooters’ arrow-by-arrow scores are entered on the HHT, duplicating what’s entered on the ofﬁcial paper scorecards. Once the electronic scores are transmitted to a central processor, the scores are totaled, sorted and displayed on the big screen monitors within a few minutes after-the-fact. Moreover, once all total scores from the paper scorecards are processed (about an hour after the scorecards are turned in), they’re transferred from the WAF computer to the Danage Scoring System computer for an instant error-check and subsequent reconciliation. The “paper” scores from the non-HHT Royale Pavilion are also transferred to

the Danage computer, then merged with the other “electronic” scores, sorted, and instantly displayed on the monitors. It’s really neat. The two major changes to the Vegas Shoot this year were: (1) thirty minutes of on-the-clock practice in addition to the two official practice ends allowed before start of official scoring, and (2) elimination of the three-arrow, five-end, 40 yard Novelty Round. There was still open practice (at no charge) Thursday afternoon in the Grand Ballroom, as well as in the small designated practice room off the Riviera Convention Center lobby from Thursday

afternoon through early Sunday afternoon. This seemed to satisfy nearly everyone. Since there has never been enough room inside for either the Novelty Round or its processor, the Indoor Marked 3-D Round, the “Vegas Shoot” is now only the Vegas Shoot. Besides, the weather outside the Convention Center was wet and nasty. The WAF Vegas Shoot and its sister shoot, the WAF Archery Classic, are rather unique tournaments in that only three of the seven adult “championship” style/divisions, Freestyle, Freestyle Limited continued on pg. 6

Recurve and Crossbow offer both male and female awards. Championship Bowhunter Freestyle, Freestyle Limited Compound, Senior Freestyle and Barebow divisions are all unisex. Likewise, all four “flight” divisions, Freestyle, Bowhunter Freestyle, Freestyle Limited Recurve and Freestyle Limited Compound, are unisex. Of course, the Juniors must be separated by male and female. Adults shoot for cash prizes only, while the Juniors (Cub, Youth and Young Adults) shoot for first, second and third place medals (Vegas Awards). Round One, Friday, February 6th Sixty-two archers in six divisions shot perfect 300’s on Friday. Forty-two 300’s were shot in the Championship Male Freestyle Division alone, while another thirteen 300’s were shot in the Freestyle Flights Division. Two 300’s each were recorded in Championship Bowhunter Freestyle (Lynn Hoch and Troy Knoll), Championship Female Freestyle (Erika Anschutz and Tiffany Reeves) and Young Adult Male Freestyle (Ben Cleland and Garrett Ayersman). Dennis Neely shot the sole 300 in Senior Freestyle. At the Championship level, first, second and third place ties are broken by a shoot-off, and not by total X-count. Nevertheless, a high X-count on Friday is a sign that you’re a favorite to make Sunday’s shoot-off. Jesse Broadwater’s 300 with a perfect 30 X-count and Grant Schleusner’s 30029X’s led the list. ship Male Freestyle Division recorded 28 X’s, while the rest of the “300” shooters’ X-count ranged from 27 down to 17 — all with a chance to make the Sunday Shoot-off. There were several other close matches with very fine scores recorded on Friday. There were five and seven 299’s scored in the Championship Female Freestyle and Championship Bowhunter Freestyle Division, respectively, to go along with the leaders’ 300’s. In the Senior Freestyle Division, four old-timers with 299’s and four with 298’s were close behind Dennis Neely’s 300. In Barebow, past champion Teddy Kibel led defending champion Rick Stark 293 to 290. In Cub Male Freestyle, Michael DeCosta led Jimmy Bell 295 to 292, while in Championship Freestyle Limited Compound Division, Graham Cofield led defending champion Jeff Fabry 297 to 295. Equally close matches were also evident in the Freestyle Limited Recurve Divisions. For the women, Aida Roman’s 286 was one point better than the 285’s shot by Khatuna Lorig and Jennifer Nichols. For the men, Brady Ellison (296) led Jay Lyon (294) and Joe McGlyn (293). Some fine scores were also shot by the Young Adults. Tristan Skarvan and Carli Cochran were tied in YAFFS with 295’s, followed closely by Elizabeth Sweet with 293. Gregory Scherer’s near-perfect 299 in YAMFS was only one point behind the perfect 300’s by Ben Cleland and Garrett Ayersman (noted above). Several other scores in the 290’s were shot in the Youth Freestyle Divisions, led by Hunter Jackson’s 295 and

The Cub Girl gold medalists were Anna Whitcomb, Tayla McCue and Anna Miscione, in Freestyle, Freestyle Limited Compound and Freestyle Limited Recurve, respectively. The corresponding Cub Boy winners were Michael DeCosta, Jake Kuhlemeier, and Jacob Roshto. Paige Pearce edged Hunter Jackson 590 to 589 to capture the Youth Female Freestyle title, while Wu The McCurry rallied from ten points behind to win the Youth Female Freestyle Limited Recurve title over Tracy Lewis. In Youth Male Freestyle, Brandon Hood, Alex Wifler and Riley Whiting were all tied with 596’s with Brandon capturing the gold on X-count. Joseph Lira and Nathan Yamaguchi were the Youth Male Freestyle Limited Compound and Recurve winners, respectively. The Young Adult Female gold medalists were Tristan Skarvan and Nicole Crisp in Freestyle and Freestyle Limited Recurve, respectively. In the Young Adult Male competition, Ben Cleland and Ernesto Boardman, Jr. were the Freestyle and Freestyle Limited Recurve champions, respectively. Ben shot a perfect 600 to edge defending YAMFS champion Garrett Ayersman by one point. The adults completed the second of their three rounds on Saturday. The number of shooters remaining “perfect” was cut in half: 62 to 31. Twenty eight men scored 600’s in the Championship Male Freestyle Division, all of which were still in the “Shoot-off Chase,” with two-day X-counts ranging from 59 (Jesse Broadwater) down to 38 (Eric Osmonson). Cody Thompson in the Freestyle Flights Division, Dennis Neely in Championship Senior Freestyle Division and Ben Cleland in YAMFS (noted above) shot perfect 600’s as well. Nichola Simpson, Mary Hamm and Kelly Ward each shot a 599 to tie for the lead in the Championship Female Freestyle Division. Tiffany Reeves was just one point behind and three others, Christie Colin, Holly Larson and Camilla Soemod, were two points behind. Rick Stark passed Teddy Kibel, 582 to 581, to lead the Barebow Division, while Lynn Hoch and Bill Hakl, each with a fine 599, lead the Championship Bowhunter Freestyle Division. where the shooters finished.] The Pros shooting perfect 900’s, were (in alphabetical order): Michael Anderson, Nicholas Annen, Chance Beaubouef, Jesse Broadwater, Dave Cousins, Martin Damsbo, Jedd Greshock, Cabe Johnson, Kelsey Johnson, Morgan Lundin, Dan McCarthy, Levi Morgan, Grant Schleusner, Gary Smith, Jr., Scott Starnes, Keith Trail, Jackie White and Reo Wilde. After the second end of “regular scoring,” Levi Morgan and Gary Smith, Jr. were eliminated. Then in the third shoot-off end, where only the Xring counts as a “10,” Cabe Johnson, Grant Schleusner, Martin Damsbo, Keith Trail, Scott Starnes, Michael Anderson, Dan McCarthy, Nicholas Annen, Jackie White and Jedd Greshock were all eliminated. That left only five to shoot it out for the big money. Jesse Broadwater, Dave Cousins and Kelsey Johnson dropped out after the fourth shoot-off end, leaving only Chance Beaubouef, Reo Wilde and Swede, Morgan Lundin. Chance made it through the sixth end before he had to settle for third place ($2,500). Reo and Morgan remained tied for five more shootoff ends, when Morgan thought he had it won in the 11th end with a 30 to Reo’s 29. Morgan’s score was challenged, however, and both the second and third line judges declared his score a 29, making them tied going into the next, and final, end. It

Thanks again to the Easton Sports Development Foundation, the spectators this year got a great view of nearly every shot during the shoot-offs. With two powerful TV cameras capable of zooming in very close, anyone who looked at the real-time display on those big-screen monitors, seemed to know “who’s still standing” even before the line judges got to the targets. The WAF Vegas sudden-death shoot-off rules are as follows: After two ends of standard Vegas scoring, the third and subsequent ends are scored with the X-ring as a “10.” All other “gold” hits are scored as “9’s.” This year, in addition to the 100% probable shoot-off in the Championship Male Freestyle Division, there were five other sudden-death shoot-offs: (1) Chris Berry vs. Lynn Hoch vs. Troy Knoll for third place in Championship Bowhunter Freestyle; (2) Bill Hakl vs. Jeff Human for first place in the same division; (3) Dennis Neely vs. Steve Boylan vs. Richard Smith for second and third place in Championship Senior Freestyle; (4) Tiffany Reeves vs. Mary Hamm in Championship Female Freestyle; and (5) Aida Roman vs. Khatuna Lorig for second place in Championship Female Freestyle Limited Recurve. These five shoot-offs were conducted at the same time on the same 21⁄2 minute clock. It was a great warm-up to the “Big Dance” involving the eighteen Pros tied with perfect 900’s. After the second end of the shoot-off, Troy Knoll (5th), Steve Boylan (4th )and Aida Roman (3rd)

Mechanicsburg Sportsmen’s Association, home to the Mechanicsburg Archers, is proud to host the 2009 NFAA Outdoor National Field Championship, July 22 – 26.

The Mechanicsburg Archers will also be holding a Penn-Dutch League shoot June 20 & 21, 2009. This shoot is 14 Field & 14 Hunter Targets both days. This is a casual registration shoot from 7:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. both days.

Our 153-acre club is easy to get to, located only 5 minutes from exit 57 of I-81. From the exit, take Rt. 114 west to the light. Turn right on Rt. 944, go approx. 1⁄4 mile and turn left onto Miller’s Gap Road. Go approx. 1 mile and turn right at the “Y” onto Sample Bridge Road. Club is located on the right.

About Our Courses and Us We are members of the PA State Archery Association, Cumberland Valley Archery Winter League, and Penn Dutch league. Our Archery facilities include four (4) 28 target NFAA / PSAA approved field courses with a fifth course that should be completed by early spring 2009. Most of our field shooting lanes are wide enough to accommodate all 4 archers at one time. There are no steep hills to climb; they are like walking on a golf course (grass and all). Each of these fine courses are numbered and color coded at shooting positions and target butts, with signs that have target numbers and all yardages listed for Field, Hunter, and Animal distances. All yardage markers are colored coded and marked to match the yardage signs at each target and are placed in the ground using concrete cylinders and/or steel plates. Our permanent courses have target butts made out of Celotex. Sometimes, depending on the type of arrows shot, this Celotex can leave a small residue on the shaft. Using and arrow lubricant to help prevent sticking and sometime even a steel pot scrubber to remove the residue can be beneficial. Our practice facility is shot from a straight single line with 24 staggered butts that can be shot from 10 to 80 yards We annually host the PSAA Field/Hunter, and Animal championships. This year’s PSAA shoot is the weekend before Nationals, July 18 & 19, and all NFAA members are welcome to attend this shoot and participate in the guest division. This is a Pre-Registration Shoot. The Holiday Inn West (717-697-0321) will be serving as the NFAA Host Location. This is located 10 minutes from the club grounds. They are home to the West Shore Hardware Bar (night club), Legends Sports Bar and Restaurant, and the Carlisle Pike Saloon. The rate is $99.00 a night. Be sure to mention NFAA. For those interested in camping, unfortunately NO camping will be available on-site. Proposed changes to the NFAA Constitution and By-Laws were considered by the NFAA State Directors at their meeting February 2009. The following proposals were adopted by the NFAA State Directors and will change the Constitution and By-Laws effective June 1, 2009: Submitted by: Council C-7 Rationale: This will insure that the surviving spouse of a Life Member (where husband and wife are both life members) will receive our publication and proper communication and membership privileges which are always keyed to the head of household. Page 10, Article III, Section A, Para 2.5: Where a husband and wife are both life members of NFAA and the head of household dies, the surviving spouse shall become head of household without charge.

Submitted by: Council C-6 Rationale: For safety and insurance viability – alcohol and shooting don’t mix. While the intent of our rule book is to make shooting facilities alcohol free during shooting, our By-Laws only restrict alcohol during 3-D and outdoor National Sectional events. The two changes below will publish the rule so it will apply to all our games and all our events. n the thirty years the NFAA has held its National Indoor Championship, only four cities have been host: Omaha (8 times), Kansas City (8), Tulsa (7) and Louisville (7). Since the “hotbed” of indoor archery is arguably in the colder, upper Midwest, north of Missouri and Ohio Rivers, it makes sense that the last nine Championships have been held in either Kansas City or Louisville, the last six being in the Kentucky International Convention Center, located in the historic part of downtown Louisville. The facilities are nearly ideal: A well-lighted main hall, which can accommodate the manufacturers’ trade show, food services, and about 650 archers on each line. Prior to this year, the major complaint at every major indoor tournament has been the lack of open practice lanes. Not this year. In addition to eight hours of open practice Friday, there was 30 minutes of practice before the start of each line. This practice was on-the-clock and at the archer’s 26 ARCHERY MAGAZINE

assigned target, and was in addition to the two ofﬁcial practice ends normally allowed. This scheme worked well at the Vegas Shoot, and was equally accepted by almost all the shooters at Louisville. In total, each shooter had between 45 minutes and one hour of ofﬁcial practice before each line. The “new” National Indoor was also streamlined like the 2009 Vegas Shoot — no peripheral Novelty Shoot or Indoor Marked 3-D event. The only extra event this year was the traditional Saturday evening Pro-Am competition, which is more for fun than for monetary award. The National Indoor is the second leg of the World Archery Festival’s 3-Star Tour. It’s also the second step to the Million Dollar Jackpot to the person who shoots a perfect 900 at the Vegas Shoot, a perfect 600 with 120 X’s at the National Indoor, and a perfect 1200 at the WAF’s First Dakota National Bank Archery Classic in June. • Senior Male Bowhunter Freestyle: Jim Bath (600 105X)finished first, Bobby Roe (600-103X) second, and Doug Nihart and Merlin Oswald tied for third with 600-98X. • Master Senior Male Freestyle: After about forty years of collecting silver bowls (indoor and outdoor), Dean Pridgen (600-102X) collected another one. Loren Pagel (600-94X) and Clayton Venne (599-97X) were second and third, respectively. While there were “only” seven divisions competing on the morning line, there were fifty-nine divisions shooting the afternoon line. The first three places are listed in this issue. In the afternoon there were fifteen Championship matches decided by two points or less. Lucas Kenley, Jimmy Bell and Jeremy Elliot ended up tied with 600 and 118 X’s in Cub Male Freestyle. [Note: Jeremy won the 2008 CMFS Championship in a shoot-off.] These three kids certainly showed a lot of poise in front of a large and boisterous crowd. It took three ends, including one with inside/out scoring, before Jimmy Bell emerged Cub Male Freestyle Champion. Lucas and Jeremy shared second place. Now we’re ready for the Big Shoot-off. Ten Pro men were tied with perfect 600’s with 120 X’s. Five of these ten, Reo Wilde, Jedd Greshock, Dave Cousins, Chance Beaubouef, and Grant Schleusner, also shot perfect at the Vegas Shoot, which means 30 ARCHERY MAGAZINE

The other five, Jim Despart, Braden Gellenthien, Russell Payne, Chris Eggers and Rodger Willett, although not eligible to win the million bucks, are certainly eligible to win the 2009 NFAA National Indoor Professional Men’s Championship. The $7,500 NFAA award, plus $7,000 (or more) contingency money, for first place is nothing to sneeze at. The first two shoot-off ends were scored the “regular” way. So, naturally all ten Pros remained tied with perfect targets. Starting with the third end, however, scoring is “inside/out,” meaning that an arrow shaft must be entirely within (not touching the line) the X-ring to be scored an “X.” Grant Schleusner and Russell Payne were almost perfect with 25 and 4 X’s. 44 FORM FLAWS—PART II WHEN THINGS GO WRONG Editor’s note: The following is an excerpt from Idiot Proof Archery s promised, here is the next edition of the most common form flaws. In the last issue, we covered 14 form flaws under the headings of Stance, Alignment, and The Bow Hand Grip. In this issue we will cover Anchor and the Bow Arm. In the next issue we will cover both the Finger Release and the flaws associated with the Mechanical Release. The assumption will be made that this is a right-handed archer. The opposite will be true for a left-hander.

ANCHOR 15. Thumb Behind Neck This causes the wrist of the draw arm to kink or bend. Upon release, the wrist recoils and returns to its original straight position, which in turn creates sideways, pre-loaded torque in the wrist

and hand and is, therefore, transferred to the bowstring. Putting the thumb behind the neck also allows the archer to collapse into the back of the neck, thereby negating any back tension the archer may have had. A straight, relaxed and expanded wrist/forearm/elbow unit (in line with the arrow) is the most forgiving, “Idiot Proof” method in archery. 16. Head and Neck Too Far Forward As in the “Z formation” mentioned in #4, when the head and neck are pushed forward into the bow string for peep alignment, it creates tension in the neck. This is not conducive to consistent shot execution. The head should be upright and relaxed, and only slightly tilted to the side to accommodate peep alignment. The string should just touch the tip of the nose. (Archers that wear glasses may have to touch the side of their nose in order to see past the frames.) If you can’t reach the string with your nose without tipping your head forward, either your draw length is too short or, more likely, your anchor is too low.

with the string without bending your head forward, try raising your anchor farther up the side of your face until the string naturally comes up under your nose. Finger shooters tend to use fingertips in contact with the corner of their mouth. This is not as solid as locking the bones of the string hand into a place on the jawbone. Different shaped faces accommodate different anchor points. Find one that is comfortable, relaxed and touching at least two places on your face (plus the front and rear sight aligned), like your hand locked into the jawbone and your nose touching the string. 19. Moving Lips To Touch Kisser Button A kisser button is used instead of a peep and really shouldn’t be “kissed”! Moving your lips over to “kiss” a kisser button is not a consistent anchor, because the lips can be moved into almost any position. If you insist on using a kisser button, make sure it is anchored into something solid, such as the corner of an upper tooth . . . the lower jaw moves. 20. Floating Anchor—Draw Hand Doesn’t Touch Face Your draw hand should be locked in on the side of your face where you can feel the bones in your hand mesh or interlock with the bones in your face (jaw). Most archers find placing one or two knuckles behind the jawbone is solid and easily repeatable, regardless of whether you shoot with your fingers or a mechanical release.

17. String Too Tight Into Face at Anchor Pulling the string into the skin of the face or side of the cheek causes left and right string oscillation (resulting in left and right misses) and inconsistent anchor. Adjust your draw length, release rope, string loop, and/or anchor up or down until the string just touches your nose.

18. String Doesn’t Touch Nose at Anchor A solid and consistent anchor is imperative for good shooting, and is especially true when shooting up and down hills. The more points of reference you have, the more consistent your shots will be. (I recommend at least four.) Your scope or pin on target is one anchor . . . your eye looking through the peep is a second anchor . . . the tip of your nose on the string is a third . . . and the knuckles of your draw hand solidly touching and/or locked into your jawbone is a fourth. A kisser button is an optional anchor, but it’s not necessary if you use a peep sight. Note: If you have trouble touching the tip of your nose

BOW ARM 21. Bow Shoulder Too High This is one of the most common ﬂaws that I see. One of the reasons for this is because a lot of us learned archery on a recurve bow, or we were taught by a recurve shooter that needed all the muscle they could get to draw the bow back. This bad form is passed down from shooter to shooter. Another reason is pulling too much bow weight. This causes the deltoid muscle on the top of your bow shoulder to be used to push the bow out, and is tense at full draw (like some recurve shooters), which in turn, causes the sight to shake. The bow shoulder should be down and locked in the socket but relaxed. It should be level with the other shoulder. This is bone-to-bone form, as opposed to using muscles to keep the bow pushed forward toward the target. If it is done properly, the upper arm bone (humerus) will slip down and lock into the shoulder joint and the shoulder blade in the back will actually jut out. All of the bones in the arm unit including the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder should all line up. This produces a much steadier sight picture and will be much less tiring, because you are using bones to hold the bow, not muscles. 22. Bow Shoulder Rolled Into The Bow Similar to #21, this causes tension and excessive sight movement, which can lead to anxiety, fear of missing and later to punching and/or snapshooting. It is also hard to duplicate, and usually will break down over time. It is a symptom that the bow is being held with muscles instead of bone, and the shoulder is not down and locked. It also frequently goes hand in hand with shooting with a bent bow elbow. See #23. 23. Bow Arm Elbow Bent This technique has been mastered by a very few archers, but most shooters will ﬁnd it almost impossible to duplicate the bend in the elbow, exactly the same way every shot, especially shooting up and down hills. Sometimes the degree of bend in the elbow causes a slightly different draw length and the archer can’t really tell if he is exactly against the wall or slightly into the valley of the bow, from shot to shot (unless you use a clicker or marks on your cables that ensure the same draw length). Now the bow is, once again, being held with muscles, because you must also use the deltoid (shoulder muscle) to support this “bent elbow style.” This can cause a shaky sight picture. Also, shooting with a bent elbow probably requires two to three times more practice than shooting with a straight, but relaxed bow arm.

24. Bow Arm Elbow Locked And Tense This is the opposite of #23. If the elbow is hyper-extended, tense and locked, it also can create tension in the shot and movement in the sight. It is important that this elbow remain relaxed, but not bent. You may ﬁnd it easiest to pull the bow with the elbow locked, but once you get to full draw, “unlock” it but don’t bend it! All bones from the lower part of the hand all the way up to the shoulder socket should be aligned as much as possible, to support both the mass and draw weight of the bow. 25. Bow Wrist Bent This is when the archer bends the wrist out away from the midline of the bow, sometimes in an attempt to keep the string from hitting his bow arm. As in #12, the handle of the bow is too far out on to the thumb where only soft tissue, not bone, is holding the bow, plus there is excess tension in the bent wrist. This shooting position will almost always give the right-handed archer pre-loaded right bow torque (resulting in right arrows). Again, the bow wrist should be straight and relaxed and the bow handle should contact your hand at the base of the thumb.

26. Bow Arm Fully Extended If the bow is pushed to the full extension of the bow arm, all the way toward the target, then upon explosion, the bow hand and arm unit has no more forward extension available to expend energy from the bow. This is known as “pre-loaded” torque. What happens is, for right-handers, the bow will kick or swing to the left immediately upon release, before the arrow clears the rest, causing left arrows. This is frequently a symptom of too long of a draw. As stated in #21, the bow shoulder should be down and locked into the socket but relaxed. Quit Aiming!

ONCE AT AN NFAA INDOOR NATIONALS, one of my students had been battling it out for first place. The score was tied with only fifteen arrows remaining. Noticing that his rhythm was slowing down, I called him over and instructed, “Quit aiming and shoot form!” He knew exactly what I meant, as he proceeded to capture the title. When a competition heats up and the scores are close, archers tend to place more pressure on themselves, often trying to be too precise with the shot placement. By doing this, they add several seconds to their normal shooting rhythm and cause a breakdown in their form. Usually, the added time results in a weaker follow-through with the bow arm producing a low or low-right shot. When over-aiming happens, the bow arm loses forward pressure and more sight movement occurs. A weak shot is likely to follow. Many archers and some coaches put far too much emphasis on the aiming process. Put the pin on the target; then let it float and shoot a good, strong shot. Aiming is over-rated. If the pin is floating on the desired impact point, a strong shot with your normal form will hit the mark. The problem of over-aiming starts when ones

I would love to share my adventure in the tree stand. My husband, Buck, and I have been playing the archery game for over forty years. Hunting, field rounds, target, 3-D, shot—every style you can name. We have owned and operated an archery shop, and we have been officers at local, state and national levels. I am a level 4 national archery coach all because we wanted to learn to shoot deer with a bow. When we started hunting, deer were not as plentiful as they are today. By the fifth year, I was starting to become a little discouraged. When my birthday rolled around, my husband bought me a tree stand; prior to that we would just climb a tree and sit on a limb. On the morning of my birthday, I climbed up my new stand for the first time. About an hour later, two deer appeared and started my way, giving me a broadside shot. I was able to harvest my first deer with a bow! That began the annual hunt for the “birthday deer.” Some years the birthday deer came a few days early or late. Some years they were pretty nice bucks. And some years, meat deer. You know I shot a doe so the herd wouldn’t grow! This year we have two grandsons who are first-year bow hunters. It was an all-out effort for them to get their deer before basketball practice began! As the rut—and my birthday—approched, they had each had a shot but hadn’t connect. Finally, the big day arrived: My 65th birthday. My husband bought me a new tree stand! A week late, the new stand was up and the rut was in full swing. It was a cold Sunday afternoon, just a week from gun season. I was up in my new tree stand and a nice 10-point came by at a fast walk looking for a date, but instead he became grandma’s birthday deer. I’m proud to be fit enough to still draw 46 lbs., climb trees, and teach my grandchildren to hunt, to track, and to know the pleasure of having an arrow find its mark. I hope to be at this a while longer—I have seven grand-

Things to See and Do There are many non-archery related activities to occupy your free time. Hershey Park and Chocolate World is an easy 1⁄2 hour drive from the club. The Gettysburg Battle Field is less than an hour away. Or you might choose to visit the Amish Attractions in Lancaster County (and Lancaster Archery Supply!), The National Civil War Museum or PA State Museum in Harrisburg, Indian Echo Caverns, Or even go to a Harrisburg Senators AA Baseball game on City Island. For the golfers, 6 golf courses are located in the area. The fishermen can enjoy small mouth bass fishing on the Susquehanna River and trout fishing on some of the most famous limestone streams in the east, the Yellow Breeches Creek and Letort Spring Run, all located within 10 miles of the club. thinking process is centered on score or winning. Such pressure often begins days before a tournament and intensifies after the competition gets underway. Focusing on scores and first place is an excellent blueprint for a poor performance. Where should you direct your attention? Picture yourself shooting your best possible form. This process will build a positive image, help you relax, and produce a more excellent shot. Many archers put their confidence in the sight picture, not their form. When they get nervous and see sight movement, their game begins to deteriorate. Very few archers are steady enough to “lock on” to the x-ring and have the pin stay there. They keep waiting for the shot, wanting the pin to hold on the mark. Before long, they have added several seconds to their normal shooting rhythm, which allows the back pressure to decrease. The stage is set for an ineffective shot. How can you remedy the problem? Trust your

form, not your sight. Quit aiming! Hold the pin as close to the desired impact point as possible and let the pin float. If you tighten muscles in an attempt to guide the sight pin, the effect of this tension will be reflected in the shot execution. Concentrate and make sure you produce a shot with perfect form. If the form is good, the result will be much better than if you had continued aiming. Prove this idea to yourself so you will trust your form. Place a 40 centimeter target at 40 yards and shoot twenty arrows for score. Now, repeat the process, but let the pin float as you shoot a rhythmic shot and concentrate on perfect form. The scores should reflect where to place your trust. The next time you find yourself in a pressure situation, you should have the confidence to make a good shot. Instead of worrying about erratic pin movement, the focus is on perfect shot execution. The confidence and trust in your form will help you perform like a champion. ■
