bruce cull NFAA High Performance Compound Academy Shows Growth in its Second Year The NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center hosted its second High Performance Compound Academy June 25-29, 2014. Top youth archers from across the country came to receive four days of advanced archery instruction from multiple top-level coaches. Coaches included Bob Romero, Level 5 NTS; Linda Beck, Level 5 NTS; Larry Wise, Level 4 NTS; George Ryals, NFAA Professional Archer; Erika Jones, NFAA Professional Archer; Josahan Jaime Santacruz, Level 4 NTS; Mark Eggers, US Collegiate Archery Association 2013 Coach of the Year; and Bill Hewes, Level 3 NTS. The Complex boasts a 90m indoor range, FITA field, 3D field and 3 new NFAA Field courses that allowed students to learn and participate in multiple disciplines of archery. Students focused on advanced instruction in equipment setup, individual video analysis, presentations from top-level NFAA Professional archers, and introduction to sports medicine and sports science. The Academy taught the participants how to prepare for tournaments both mentally and physically, focused on National Training System shooting form and technique, and how to build and execute goals. This year’s Academy has made huge strides since 2013. The 2014 graduating class grew from just nine archers in 2013 to twenty seven. “People across the country are really beginning to understand the type of learning we are cultivating here at
Another exciting addition to the 2014 Academy was a mock 3 Star Car Shoot Off. Students shot in the exact same location used for the $10,000 shoot off each year at the First Dakota Classic. The shoot off came down to Kolby Hanley of Cambridge, VT and Matthew Weinstein of Loganville, GA at 40yds. Hanley won the final shot and was awarded a $9,000 scholarship from the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center. Both finalists were awarded entry to all 2015 3 Star Tournaments.
the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center. We want to bring together the best coaches in the country with the best up and coming archers and we have the perfect facilities in which to hold it,” praised NFAA President, Bruce Cull. “We had many students attend who already hold championships at multiple levels including National, International and Vegas titles. I know we will see several of these kids on top of the podiums in 2015.“ The goal of the High Performance Academies is to create a central location for compounders to train
and grow. The variety of indoor and outdoor facilities offers the perfect environment for archers to train year round. “We look forward to expanding into a series of Academies, hosted throughout the year,” added Bill Hewes, Community Coach. “We want archers of all ages and skill levels to train at our facility. It doesn’t matter if you want to compete at local shoots or at National and International competitions, we want to help all archers improve their skills.” “The NFAA and the NFAA Foundation have demonstrated their

commitment to high performance compound training through the Compound Academy series. I am excited to watch these Academies grow into all levels, ages and disciplines of archery,” stated Bob Romero, Easton Foundations Director of Coaching and Program Development. uring his 44 years in archery, Dean Pridgen has had numerous accomplishments at all levels of competition. Dean is proud to have earned the title of Champion in his very first attempt at the NFAA Outdoor National Championships in 1972. This was the first of 22 NFAA Champion designations in various categories including Professional Adult Male Freestyle (Indoor and Outdoor) and Senior Male Freestyle (Indoor and Outdoor). Missing only the 1986 NFAA Nationals, Dean’s victories span 37 years. Dean won his final National Indoor title in 2009. Dean was featured on the cover of Archery Magazine in January 1975 and October 1979. He also authored articles for Archery Focus Magazine in 2005 and 2008. He and his wife Rosie were inducted in the Oklahoma State Archery Hall of Fame in 2004. Dean is a life member of the NFAA and a certified master archery coach. His passion and persistence to improve as an archer allowed him to accomplish feats with a bow most people couldn’t even imagine. His many accomplishments have made Dean one of the most respected men in the field of archery. While all of Dean’s accomplishments warrant consideration for the NFAA Hall of Fame, the quality of man that Dean is should not be overlooked. Though perhaps intimidated by his many successes, his fellow competitors would find Dean to be a humble person willing to provide advice and guidance. Even rival archers measure their successes against the high standards Dean has set. Manufacturers such as Jennings, Hoyt, Golden Eagle, York, Bear, and Mathews believed enough in Dean’s abilities to sponsor his archery endeavors through the years. PSE continues to sponsor him today.
Dean is always willing to help his fellow archers out and to promote this great sport regardless of the timing or location. He has been, and always will be, one of the best ambassadors of the sport and a true professional. —Tom Dorigatti
In my nearly 30 years of professional competition, I competed with no finer friend, sportsman, competitor or gentleman than Dean Pridgen. A fierce competitor on the course, but also the sort of guy who if he noticed you were about to shoot from the wrong stake or make some other error, he would speak up. When Dean won, he wanted to hold the champions trophy because he fairly outshot everyone. His induction into the NFAA Hall of Fame is not only based on his achievements but because he is one of the greatest ambassadors of the NFAA. —Terry Ragsdale

USA’S NFAAF TO HOST 2015 WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS IN YANKTON

PerformanCe of 452X and 8190 ComBIned
The NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center was unanimously awarded the right to host the 2015 World Youth Championships by World Archery’s Executive Board in May.
Good for Compound and Recurve bows. No creep and high abrasion resistance.
The bid, submitted by the National Field Archery Association Foundation, met all the Executive Board’s stringent criteria, designed to select the most suitable host for a World Archery Youth Championships. The South Dakota-situated venue impressed the group enough that they voted unanimously in favor of the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Centre as hosts of the 2015 event, to run from 8-14 June. Mexico City was among the other locations considered. An estimated 600 competitors from 60 countries are expected at the event, supported by a similar number of team management and family. The tournament schedule will include an official practice period, three days of qualification and eliminations – and two days of spectator finals. Juan-Carlos Holgado, 1992 Olympic team gold medalist and World Archery’s Event Director was impressed by the venue. “This is a fantastic facility, fit for an international event,” he said. “It’s one of the best archery centers I’ve seen, and the two outdoor Olympic archery ranges mean it’s got the capacity to welcome the high number of young archers that compete at the youth world championships.”

Beautifully located in the Great Plains of the United States, the venue, the City of Yankton and State of South Dakota have the infrastructure needed to support the Tournament. “Everything is in close proximity, the venue’s very safe for young archers and Yankton 2015 should prove to be an excellent event,” Juan-Carlos concluded. The NFAA Easton Archery Centre in Yankton was one of the first Easton Centers to be built, and is a Partner center of the Easton Foundation as well as home to the National Field Archery Association headquarters. National Field Archery Association President Mr. Bruce Cull said, “As the home of the NFAA, Yankton is a centerpiece for archery in the United States. By bringing the young generation of international archers to the Centre, we not only have the chance to give them a great event but display our world-class venue and City to competitors from around the globe.” World Archery Secretary General Mr. Tom Dielen said, “Yankton 2015 is the next in a series of World Archery events we’ve successfully partnered with the National Field Archery Association Foundation board and staff to deliver. Bruce Cull and his team stage the popular and growing final of the Indoor Archery World Cup at their Las Vegas Shoot, and held the 2012 World Archery Indoor Championships in the same city. I’m wholly confident that these 2015 youth championships will run to the same high level, in one of the most impressive archery facilities in the world.”

What's your shooting style? I compete with an Olympic Recurve bow. At The Vegas Shoot, I typically compete in the Recurve Championship division. At USA Archery events, I compete in the Recurve Senior division. I also compete in the Recurve Collegiate division with the Texas A&M Archery Club through the USCA. How long have you been shooting archery? I began to shoot 9 years ago when I was 10 years old. What's your favorite archery memory? Most of my favorite memories include archery. There’s been a lot of victorious moments in my career, but my favorite memory was a match I shot against Khatuna Lorig during World Championship Team trials at the 2013 Gator Cup. Khatuna shot amazing, and it turned into a word class match. In our five end match, she shot a 28, three perfect 30s, and a 27 with two tens. She only missed five points total and only shot three arrows outside of the 10 ring. It was incredible. Yet, somehow, I managed to win this match. This was a match that pushed me to perform well or loose. I didn’t shoot as great as Khatuna, but I managed to place a 29, a 28, and a couple of my own 30s in the right part of the match. All I could do was keep at it and see how close I could get to beating her which kept me relaxed and focused. It was an awesome experience to be able to stick with a great competitor, and my memory of this match encourages me to never give up. Advice for other young archers: I encourage other young archers to practice staying focused on their shot rather than scores. This was very difficult for me to do at a young age and I wish I actually dedicated myself to it earlier. It’s harder to teach your mind to stay focused than to actually learn the technique to shoot. In order to learn how to compete, I instruct beginners to the competition scene, which could be a person of any age, to make it their goal to shoot an end feeling comfortable shooting their shot. It might take the entire event and on the last end you finally calm down enough to do it, but that’s success. Every competition after that, you try to reach that point earlier and earlier. It’s the only way to ensure consistent shooting throughout the entire competition. How do you celebrate an archery victory or new personal best? After any archery success, I love going out to eat spicy wings with any family and continued next page 30 Archery Magazine

What's your shooting style? Compound How long have you been shooting archery? 15 years What's your favorite archery memory? My favorite archery memory is of the 2009 World Indoor Championships in Poland. I got a bronze medal in the individual and our team got silver. My parents were there to see the whole tournament and I made many new friends. It was my first world event and I will never forget it. Advice for other young archers: Get the best coaching you can find, and then but in the time behind your bow. Starting out I shot my bow 200 shot a day 6 or 7 days a week. How do you celebrate an archery victory or new personal best? I will usually go out to eat at a nice restaurant with family and friends. Archery accessory or equipment you could not live without: Sunglasses and an arrow puller. I use Easton's new arrow puller, it takes a lot less effort to get arrows out of the target and saves your hands for shooting. Sunglasses are a must when you are on the Fita field for 8 hours a day. michelle friends that are present for the occasion. The following are excerpts from Idiot Proof Answers to Archery’s Most Asked Questions by Bernie Pellerite. From the author: “When I decided to write this second book, I felt that it should be completely different from the first. To determine what most people wanted to hear, we took questions for over a year from the internet and from past seminars and shooter’s schools. Then we selected the top 275 from over 500 questions we had compiled. In this follow-up book to Idiot Proof Archery, we tried not to duplicate the material covered in the first book. So, most of Idiot Proof Answers is brand new material with new pictures and there is much more technical information in this book than in the first. The chapters include the following: Equipment, which includes bows, tuning, strings, peep sights, sights, rests, stabilizers, releases and arrows. Also Form, Aiming, Mental, Target Panic, Back Tension, Practice, Tournaments and Hunting. This article is a selection of questions and answers from the Bow Equipment chapter.
of drag, so you will have to make sure that your arrows are all made on the same jig so they are all EXACTLY alike. No two jigs are alike so they rarely put fletch on at the exact same angle. Any variance in the arrows will cause variance on how they go through the rest. I accidentally dry-fired my bow but it seems okay. What should I do?
fig 1.32 Put your bow in a press and check it for damage.
Can you use a 2-inch Blazer with a Whisker Biscuit? If not, why?
fig 1.31
If the Blazer vanes fit easily through the “Biscuit,” you’re good to go!
Yes you can. Several people I know can shoot this set up. However, you have to make sure you can get the Blazers through the Whisker Biscuit. Of course, the taller they are and the more drag you get, the larger your group will get when shooting through a Whisker Biscuit. You are shooting through all those bristles and they do create a lot 34 Archery Magazine

Third Quarter 2014
Just because you dry-fired your bow doesn't mean there is something wrong. Many bows can be dry-fired 50-100 times without damage and another bow may blow up after only one dry-fire. One of the reasons for this is some manufacturers use the same cables and strings on lowpoundage bows as they do on the high-poundage bows. A low-poundage bow won’t put as much stress on the cable system and string when it is dry-fired, so there would be less chance of damage. But, you need to examine the bow carefully and if you can, take it to a pro shop to get a clean bill of health. Things to check: Make sure the string doesn’t have any broken strands. If a strand is broken under the center serving, a sign of this can be your peep is over or under rotating. Check the center serving and also the end servings. Check the limbs for any cracks. Make sure both axles have both of their e-clips. Make sure the axles are not bent and the cams are still flat, not bent. Check the limb tips to make sure the axle holes are not enlarged or fractured. Finally, check the riser for breaks or cracks, mainly in the grip area and in the limb pockets.
My bow has bad hand shock. What causes it and how do I fix it?
fig 1.34
fig 1.33
Cams that are out of sync can cause hand shock.
The cams being out of sync cause some hand shock. Usually it is the bottom cam finishing later than the top, so the bow kicks up. You can tell this by watching the stabilizer to see if it kicks up after the shot. Sometimes it might be a design flaw of the bow that causes the bow to kick violently. In that case, adding stabilizers with shock absorbing materials and/or a string stopper – I just happen to make both! – will cut down on the shock. Adding mass weight along with elastomer stabilization seems to be the best at combating this kind of shock, assuming it’s not in the timing of the cams. Should I lube my cams and cableguard? If so, with what? If you have bearings, no. But if you have bushings, you should use 3-in-1 oil or white lithium. The cableguard and cable slide should be okay if you keep them clean and don’t let dirt build up on it. Fine steel wool should help keep the cableguard clean and smooth so the cable slide doesn’t grab. (see figure 1.34, top right)
3-in-1 oil works well on standard cam axles.
the anchor slightly. So, I’ve found that string angle does affect archers from one bow to the other, but not across the board. For example, a 45° string angle might fit a particular archer with a 28 inch draw, whereas one with a 55° string angle and a very short axle-to-axle might have to use a slightly different draw length. There are not any advantages, other than being able to shoot a longer axleto-axle bow with a larger brace height, which are, in most cases, more forgiving. (see figure 1.35, below)
Should short draw shooters look for a target bow that preserves a 45° string angle at full draw, instead of looking to target models that are 40 inches or more axle to axle? I've found that the string angle has little to do with target model bows for short or tall archers. Basically, as long as the archer touches the string to the end of his nose and finds a good solid bone-to-bone anchor with one of his first two knuckles on his release hand tucked in to his jaw-line, there are not very many bows that cannot be modified by lengthening or shortening the D-loop or raising/lowering
fig 1.35 String angle is not important if your anchor is solid. scores, tournament info and more at www.nfaausa.com 35

Just because you dry-fired your bow doesn't mean there's something wrong.
fig 1.38
How about strategies for us older archers who aren’t strong enough to handle high holding weight and setups that work for us? It’s more important to get a set of well-matched arrows that are matched to the bow.
fig 1.36
Find a bow you can handle for the entire tournament.
A lot of older archers who aren’t in great shape have a tough time with a higher holding weight. The best rule of thumb is to try to find a bow that has a holding weight you can tolerate for an entire tournament. That should be your maximum holding weight. That means, maybe 11 or 12 pounds might be the ideal holding weight for someone who does not shoot a lot. The best thing to do is to try several different models and see which ones you think you can maintain for the entire tournament. If you find yourself getting tired near the end of the tournament, it means the holding weight may be too much for your particular physical muscularity.
relatively straight. This is really all you can ask from a bow. Even if it's not tuned perfectly, it is tuned consistently, thus it will not shoot differently from shot to shot. Only the archer does that! As far as performance out of the bow, the maximum amount of performance that a bow can have is how it is engineered from the factory. Generally, that's on its highest setting, which is 1% or possibly 2% more efficient than on its lowest setting. This means next to nothing, unless the archer does his job. Bottom line; the bow will shoot the same shot after shot, unless the archer influences it. It’s more important to get a set of well-matched arrows that are matched to the bow. It’s just like ammunition for a gun; the gun will shoot the same every time, but if you are shooting shells with different powder charges, they are going to hit differently. It’s even more critical on a bow! How does a target bow differ from a hunting bow, besides what it is used for?
fig 1.39
How can I get the best performance out of my bow? As far as the bow’s performance, it’s best to get all the specs from the manufacturer when you buy a bow. Make sure that the limbs are cranked down equally, the cams are synchronized, the rest is put on square and match the arrows to where they’re all the same and they're flying 36 Archery Magazine

Third Quarter 2014
Short, light and fast is preferred for hunting; longer, slower and more forgiving is preferred for target.
fig 1.40 Moving the silencers away from the limb tips will probably cause more vibration. That’s why they are put there at the factory.
For some people, a target bow and a hunting bow are much the same, except for the paint job. However, target bows tend to be longer axle-toaxle and the brace height has a tendency to be longer than most hunting bows. This allows the arrow to get off the string quicker, thus making it slightly more forgiving, as does the slightly longer axle-to-axle. Speed is not very important in the target industry – not so in the hunting industry. Short and light is preferred on a hunting bow and a lower brace height produces more power and speed. This design gives the hunting bow advantages the target bow doesn't have – or need. Is it true that if you move the limb silencers closer to the handle it will add more feet per second, but still dampen vibration? Moving your limb silencers closer to the riser may give you a very, very slight increase in speed – 1 or 2 f.p.s. – but it probably won't dampen as much vibration. This is because most of the vibration is toward the end of the limbs and not close to the handle. Different bows, of course, have different configurations and different amounts of vibration, so you’ll have to try it and find out for yourself. In general, though, I don't think you're going to notice much more speed and you may find that you’ve increased the vibration. n

Meet Your Southwest Section bob borges
southwest Councilman
I got my start in archery as a lot of us did through bowhunting and progressed rapidly into shooting tournaments, joining the NFAA in 1975 and have never looked back. I shoot mainly in the Non-Sight styles Bowhunter and Barebow but have shot in FSL and a little in Freestyle. Back in 1993 I was asked to run for New Mexico Director and won a tightly contested race. I held the Directors spot for 6 years until a transfer by the Federal Government back to my home state of California caused me to resign. But after a short 2 years, my family and I was once again transferred back to NM which was ok with us since we were missing the Green Chile and the lifestyle of that great state. After a few years, I once again was in the position of Director and held it for 3 years. Then in 2007 I was asked by the rest our directors to become the Southwest Councilman, and as some of you read about a year ago, a position that I really enjoy and am happy to serve the members of the Southwest Section.

country of central California and moved to the Bay Area when he was 16. Eventually Tom became a Plumber, Plumbing Contractor and then a Developer. Tom got married in 1965 and now has 2 sons, also in 65 he got involved in Tournament Archery where he became competitive at the National level. He has shot in the Pro Division, and also in the adult division in the Barebow, Bowhunter and Traditional styles. Tom became involved in the Political side of Archery in California when he was elected to the position of State President where he served for 4 years. After that Tom was elected as the NFAA Director, a position he has held since that time. Tom has moved to Auburn, California and is enjoying his retirement.
sheri stine-trujillo colorado director
Sheri has been shooting archery for about 14 years and has been the Director for 6 years, she shoots in the BHFSL style and has been State, National and World Champion. She enjoys meeting all of the different people that are involved in the sport. Her favorite part is watching the children come to lessons to learn how to shoot, and soon after the parents are learning and the entire family is involved.
This is an incredible sport and she feels lucky to part of it.
jim jensen
utah director
Jim was born and raised in Utah and his passion for archery after receiving a bow from his Dad at the age of 5, he has since taught his own children how to shoot using the same bow. He is a lifetime member of Timpanogos Archers and has enjoyed shooting different styles over the years including Barebow, BHFS, Freestyle and most recently Traditional. Jim was appointed as Utah’s Director in 2012 and considers it a privilege to associate with many of Utah's great archers.
carl jamison
new mexico director
Carl Jamison, a New Mexico native, has been involved in archery since 1965 when at the age of 10 he received his first bow, a yellow Bear fiberglass recurve with a rubber handle that also served as the arrow shelf. His aunt (a harness maker) had made him a tooled leather quiver for his birthday and bought the bow and some arrows so he could use the quiver. He still has the quiver to this day. He is a multiple NM State champion and
currently shoots in the Senior Male Freestyle division. This is his 6th year as the NFAA NM State director and is currently up for reelection. He has also served as an official at the Vegas shoot and at the NFAA Indoor National tournament. Carl is a professional photographer who took his first photograph for a fee at the age of 14 and he and his wife Julie have given photography seminars to many other photographers and have been featured speakers at the Professional Photographers of America's national conventions. They have been in business in Albuquerque, NM since 1986.
10 years, met a lot of great people, published some fantastic work, but at the same time got burnt out. I wasn't happy so I decided to maybe start shooting archery again just to take some time for myself on the weekends. When I did, I went back to the same archery shop (The Island Archer) that I used to get supplies from in my younger days, and picked up my first Hoyt. I loved archery so much I closed my photography business, started working
at The Island Archer as a technician and Hoyt shop shooter and never looked back. I have been a state Director for almost 3 years now. As a Director, I do my best to help young and veteran shooters that want to get more serious with the sport down the correct path. I don't want what happened to me as a young shooter, happen to anyone else and I hope I can continue doing so for many years to come! n
Archery has always been a major part of his life and he is extremely proud and grateful that he has been able to serve New Mexico and the National Field Archery Association as a state director.
mark kato
hawaii director
I first started shooting at my local city and county after school program at the age of 10 and slowly started competing in small tournaments and state championships for a few years as a youth. It wasn't long before I was moving up from bronze to gold medal wins thanks to my coach Bob and hours of practice! Archery was never really a big sport back then in Hawaii, so no one I knew at the time had any information about competing on a national level so I eventually got a little bored, stopped shooting and started playing other sports. Looking back now I wish I had continued shooting archery throughout my teens because I would be a whole lot better! Fast forward a number of years after high school, I ran a photography business of my own for about scores, tournament info and more at www.nfaausa.com 39

the same thoughts CALLING FROM THE COLLEGIATE NATIONALS, ONE of my students expressed that his groups on the practice range were great; but now that the competition had begun, they were becoming larger and opening up. I asked him what was going through his mind during practice. He answered, “I was running my mental program and concentrating on shooting good form.” I asked him, “What are you focusing on now? Hitting the ten ring?” He sheepishly replied, “Yes.” If focusing on form produces tight groups, why would an archer alter the thinking process? The answer is for the same reason that most unsuccessful archers change theirs. They begin eyeing the score and the leader board, hoping for a win. A different thought pattern begins to emerge, unlike the one in the practice arena. Once score becomes the primary focus, the form is altered. Over-aiming will intervene; your normal rhythm and shot routine will take longer; and the shot will not be as strong. When an archer over-aims, pressure with the bow arm is reduced so it cannot finish the shot in the same manner as it does in practice. Remember, the last thing that guides the arrow is the pressure of the bow arm. Where this arm is directed, “so goes the arrow.” For this reason, it is very important that in practice and in tournaments the bow arm moves in the same direction with the same amount of pressure. You have to learn to trust your form and not the sight pin. Yes, in tournaments you are going to see more sight movement than you do in practice. Ignore it and shoot the
same form you have rehearsed. It will work! Many archers have trouble under pressure situations. If you put your emphasis on making perfect shot execution, you will reduce your levels of anxiety and stress. Approach each competition like a day on the practice range by focusing on effective form. n
Remember, the last thing that GUIDES the arrow is the pressure of the bow arm.
