When playing in league, tell a family member that if you
do not shoot a certain score, you will do the household chores the next day. Now, most of you who are familiar with my coaching know that I do not want archers to put emphasis on score. I still don’t, but score is part of the game. You know you have to shoot a certain score in order to place. During competition, don’t worry about the numbers; worry about shooting the best form you can execute. You can always think about the score when you are done with the tournament.
To be successful, learn mental imagery and practice it
daily. Use it not only in archery, but also incorporate it into your daily living. The art of practicing mental control will make you an accomplished archer, a better worker, and a stronger person. Most of all, remember that archery is a sport to be enjoyed. Puissant. Sixteen-year-old Simon Potrebka from Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada chose this single French word to describe how he feels about archery. In English, “puissant” means “powerful”. Tyler Wilson, seventeen-year-old archer from Birtle, Manitoba, Canada, and Bryanne Lameg, fifteen-year-old archer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, both chose the word “passionate” to describe how they feel about archery. These three passionate youth
shot their powerful bows together at the NFAA Outdoor National Target Championships. This trip was not their first one across the Canadian border. Wilson participated in the 2015 Youth World Archery Championship held in Yankton, S.D. Potrebka shot in both the Iowa State Archery Association Pro Am and The Vegas Shoot the past two years. After shooting archery for eight years, Wilson said that there are many factors that he enjoys about competing in both national and international tournaments. “It’s a lot of fun meeting new people from all across the world, and doing what I love to do most which is shooting my bow,” he said. “It’s a great challenge to compete in all different kinds of tournaments in a variety of environments.” Lameg said she enjoys shooting in
different tournaments. “I like the pressure to do well and the challenge to do well in the tournament atmosphere is fun,” she said. In Lameg’s 2 years of archery experience, she has determined that international competitions are more challenging than national competitions. “There are more archers with a wide variety of skill,” she said. Lameg and Potrebka said they prepared for the NFAA Outdoor National Target Championships like they would any other tournament. Lameg practiced by “shooting, working out, and mental preparation.” “The biggest difference was I’ve never shot at those distances before so that was a little intimidating but I got over it pretty fast at the practice range,” Potrebka said. Potrebka said that international tournaments have a different environment than national and local tournaments. “For the most part with national and local tournaments especially, you’re shooting with the same people,” he said. “So international shoots are great if you want to shoot with a lot of different people and maybe make some new friends.” Internal and national tournaments do not differ much for Wilson because he said he has a lot of friends in the archery world.
“The main thing I focus on is making myself comfortable with the surroundings that I’m going to be competing in,” he said. “I’ve already competed in Yankton in the past and I really liked the area. It’s a really great complex, and a really good field to compete on.” Wilson said that there was a whole team of [Canadian] archers, including Lameg and Potrebka, who expressed interest in attending the NFAA tournament. So, they figured that it was a good opportunity to compete as a team. Although there are a lot of tournaments and practices, these three young archers still manage to balance their school, family life, social life, and work alongside archery. Wilson balances all his livelihoods by putting them in order of importance. “When balancing my life schedule I try to put family, school, and work first, then with my left over time I use it for leisure. With my busy schedule archery does tend to take the backseat once and a while, but I always seem to find time to practise eventually,” he said. For Lameg, her social and work lives are easier to balance through archery. “I value my education very much and it always comes first,” she said. “Although, archery is my life. It has helped me make more friends and has opened up more work opportunities.” Potrebka manages his life “as well as [he] can.” “My family and friends both know that if there is a tournament that day I get quiet and won’t talk to them because I’m trying to get focused on what I need to do that day. [If I miss school for a tournament], it doesn’t take me that long to get caught back up on what I missed,” he said. Whether in Canada, or in the United States, or in any other country, archery must be a universal passion – one that is very puissant. n
The Sport of Spectating At the NFAA Outdoor Target Championships, we decided to momentarily turn our direction away from those shooting at the targets, and toward those watching the action from the sidelines. “I’m here with my two sons, Devon and Dylan. “It’s maybe my son Creighton’s 5th tournament – he hasn’t shot a lot. He’s
part of the Center Shot Club in Lincoln [Nebraska]. He has two practices a week plus he shoots at home. I’m pretty involved. I have to help with some of the bow set up because he’s not strong enough yet. I make sure we talk about mindset before tournaments. Having fun is the most important thing. I remind him to keep his priorities straight when competing.” —chad blaha, lincoln ne

Q& A
meet the
Hetletveds
Q who has been shooting the longest? A Lee has technically been shooting the longest by a couple
of months or so! A family friend, Bernell Pleinus, boards horses at our place and had his Jennings Buckmaster compound in our yard. Lee tried it and was hooked. That was late fall, and by Christmas time the whole family had bows. We are now finishing our fourth season. Hatley, of course, being younger has been going as long as us with some help, but she has been independently competing for the past two years. We started with local and state shoots, then stumbled upon the First Dakota Classic, and now compete on a national landscape.
Q do you all practice together? A Yes, we practice together. Lee runs JOAD on Tuesdays and
Thursdays, and we practice as a family two additional times each week. Lee is currently a Level III USA Archery coach. When at practice, he is no longer dad or hubby but our coach. In addition, we try to respect that at least one of our practices each week should also be an uninterrupted practice for Lee as well.
Q how many tournaments have you competed in as a family? A We compete as a family at all of them. There are a few times,
especially at a large shoot, where Penny doesn’t shoot to be available for the girls. Her mantra is “mama first, shooter second.”
Q do you have any rules when it comes to shooting as a family? A At practice, we believe that bad practice is worse than no
practice. So, our goal is to set up our practices within a routine that fosters growth and success. At competition, we strive to teach our daughters that they are only as good as their competition. We must respect our competition, have fun, stay positive, and look for lessons and growth in each shooting experience. We try to stay very goal oriented—and thanks to our sponsors (Carbon Express and Runnings), we journal more to keep track of our experiences. resiliency archery takes. The best rewards as parents are when our girls meet a new friend and expand their networks. My favorite quote comes from Kinley a few summers ago when she said, “Mom, meet my new friend Brooke—she’s from Australia!” We are thankful to have such an extended archery friend network that is becoming extended family.
Q what’s your favorite family archery memory? A Each family member had a separate favorite archery memory. lee: My favorite archery memory was shooting at the Voyager
Cup where we shot the different formats such as teach and individual shoot offs. In addition, I really enjoyed NFAA National Field. Field is my favorite archery event. kinley: My favorite archery memory was NFAA National Field followed by IFAA Field. I made a great new friend, Skylah, who is from South Africa. We still keep in touch. In addition, I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to participate in CJDT camp in Salt Lake City, Utah this summer. hatley: When I first started, I was happy to hit foam or paper, and now I am frustrated if my 3D shot is a ‘5’ or my paper is an ‘8.’ My best memory is shooting a state 3D tournament when we heard a rustling in the trees. We were at Target #12, and the rustling was a weaned bear cub! It was cool to see. My mom was worried though. penny: For me, I think the best memory was last year’s Vegas shoot. It was just a lot of “firsts.” It was the first time our girls had flown. First experience for our girls to “practice with the pro’s.” The atmosphere of that shoot, being able to see the world cup to boot, it was just an exceptional opportunity.

The Man Behind the Magazines it all started with missing magazines. In the second quarter Archery Magazine of this year, the NFAA published a list of missing magazines and requested help finding them. Many archers helped in the search for the missing issues by donating their own single copy, but there was one archer that helped us find copies of all the missing magazines: Jim Shannon, a member of the NFAA since 1956, donated his entire collection of Archery magazines to the NFAA. After we received his magazines, we received a letter from his daughter, Yvonne Carter, informing us of the many stories Jim was sure to have for us. So, we decided to call him. This is Jim’s story: Jim Shannon first began archery because
of his stepfather. Jim wanted a gun to hunt rabbits; his stepfather said no. Unhindered, Jim made himself a bow to hunt the rabbits. He continued hunting throughout high school and college. At 20 years old, Jim graduated college and joined the Air Force. He was a member of the US Air Force for 30 years and 13 days. While he was a member of the armed services, Jim was stationed all around the world. But every town Jim was stationed in was missing one thing: an archery range. He built NFAA approved courses in Germany, Hawaii and Okinawa.

Not only did Jim build courses, he was a competitive Recurve archer. He began competing in tournaments while he was stationed in Hawaii. Jim attended the 16th Outdoor Nationals where he only intended to shoot for fun. But as a surprise to himself, Jim won the 325 class. The most satisfying tournament Jim participated in was the Far East Invitational in Japan. Out of the 300 archers who participated, Jim placed first in the Recurve class. Competing and building ranges wasn’t enough for Jim. In 1957 he became a NFAA registered archery instructor. He taught his wife and daughter to shoot. Jim retired to San Angelo, Texas, and joined the Concho Valley Archery Association. He teaches anyone in town who wants lessons—at no cost. Most recently, Jim taught a Girl Scout troop the basics of archery. “Even though I can’t physically shoot anymore, it doesn’t mean I’ll stop loving the sport,” Jim said. n

The following are excerpts from Idiot Proof Answers to Archery’s Most Asked Questions by Bernie Pellerite. From the author: “When I decided to write this second book, I felt that it should be completely different from the first. To determine what most people wanted to hear, we took questions for over a year from the internet and from past seminars and shooter’s schools. Then we selected the top 275 from over 500 questions we had compiled. In this follow-up book to Idiot Proof Archery, we tried not to duplicate the material covered in the first book. So, most of Idiot Proof Answers is brand new material with new pictures and there is much more technical information in this book than in the first. The chapters include the following: Equipment, which includes bows, tuning, strings, peep sights, sights, rests, stabilizers, releases and arrows. Also Form, Aiming, Mental, Target Panic, Back Tension, Practice, Tournaments and Hunting. This article is a selection of questions and answers from the Bow Equipment chapter.
Like selecting a sight, it really depends on your application. Do you want to shoot field rounds? Do you want to shoot indoors? Do you want to shoot 3-D or do you want to go hunting? The type of rest that you select should match your application. For example, if you’re going to be in a tree stand, you may not want to have a fallaway rest, which is incredibly popular for 3-D; instead you may
How do I know which rest to select?
Drop-away rests are popular for 3-D. IF you’re going to be hunting from a treestand, (20-25 yard shots) you may want a full capture rest, like the Whisker Biscuit. “Lizard tongue” rests are popular for both target and 3-D
want a full capture rest, like a Whisker Biscuit. If you’re looking to shoot target, shoving arrows through a Whisker Biscuit may produce larger groups. Therefore, you may want a fall-away rest or a lizard tongue rest that can be tuned more easily. Any time the hunter is going to be making a lot of moves, such as going up and down from a tree stand, a full capture rest makes a lot of sense. If the archer is shooting large fletch with exposedblade broadheads, then what would make the most sense is a fall-away rest.
Why do most compound bows have two holes in the riser to attach the arrow rest?
The manufacturers do this so you can move the rest to whichever hole you prefer. If you put it in the back hole, it will give you the ability to shoot a slightly shorter arrow and slightly lighter arrow. This is just for individual preference. No big mystery; it just gives you more options.
Does using a rest that is contacting the arrow throughout the entire Multiple holes in the riser gives you options on where to mount the rest. shot cycle, such as a Whisker Biscuit, take away some of the advantage of a large brace height bow? It seems to me that it would, because the person’s hand that is shooting the bow will affect the shot until the arrow leaves the rest. That kind of rest does make the bow much less “forgiving” and more critical for the average shooter, thus negating the advantage of a large brace height bow. I get emails all the time from shooters wondering why their groups got bigger when they started using that type of rest. This just means that their mistakes are being magnified because of more contact between the rest and the arrows. That type of rest is okay for hunting where precise accuracy is not imperative, but I don’t recommend them if you are competing and want tight groups.
A full capture rest can negate the advantage of a large brace height bow. 18 Archery Magazine

I recently changed from 2613 aluminum arrows to carbon arrows. My arrow rest is a double prong and spring-style rest. I’ve adjusted the nocking point down to allow for the difference in arrow diameter, but now when I paper tune, I get a high tear, no matter how far down I move the nocking point. What should I do?
The problem is not with the nocking point; the problem lies with the spring tension on your rest. It’s a common problem that I hear a lot from archers that shoot a heavier aluminum arrow with the spring pressure on the rest adjusted for that weight of arrow; for example, 520 grain line-cutter arrows. Then, when the shooter changes to a much lighter arrow, such as a 350-grain carbon arrow, they fail to adjust the spring tension for the much lighter 350-grain arrow.
It is important to understand how this set up works with a prong style rest with a spring. Spring pressure should be set up to be just stiff enough to support the prongs and the weight of the arrow in the fully upright position, at full draw. When the release is activated and the string starts to move forward, it causes the arrow to bend in the middle, first upward, then in a downward direction, which collapses the rest. A properly tuned rest does not return to the upright position until after the arrow has cleared the bow. However, when a lighter arrow bends past the same rest, the rest may spring back up and hit the nock end of the arrow before it clears the rest, causing high tears. Most of the time, all that is required is a simple adjustment of the spring tension so that the lighter arrow has just enough to hold it up at full draw. This will keep the launcher down long enough so the arrow can clear it completely.
The spring tension usually has to be adjusted when changing to heavier arrows.
For years, people have tried that. Back in the ‘90s a lot of us shot overdraws which gave us the ability to get the rest over the pivot point of the wrist. Basically, the pivot point of the wrist is a misnomer, since at full draw, if you use a low wrist grip, your bow really doesn’t pivot; it’s pretty much stationary. Unless you’re a beginner that moves your wrist while shooting,
Is it more forgiving to have the arrow rest over the pivot point of the wrist?
the arrow rest doesn’t necessarily have to be over the pivot point. Otherwise, the people that tried it in the ‘90s would still be doing it today, which is not usually the case. An arrow over the pivot point of the wrist was basically an attempt to make the arrow speed increase by shooting shorter arrows using an overdraw. In the experimentation with overdraws, some people went past the break in the wrist which made the bow very critical. This led people to think that over the wrist was the correct place for the rest and since then, people have gravitated towards leaving the rest where the machined hole is in the riser. Scores haven’t suffered because of it, so I can’t see it being more forgiving over the pivot point. At one time, overdraws were used to move the rest so it was over the break in the wrist.
Is there an advantage to a prong style rest over a dropaway rest when shooting spots? A prong-style rest doesn’t really offer any advantage over a dropaway rest, unless the drop away rest does not stay up long enough to give the arrow a good start when coming out of the bow. The primary Prong style and drop-away advantage of a drop-away rest is rests are both very popular fletch clearance. When shooting for shooting spots. spots with a prong-style, most archers will set it up where they get a ⅛”-¼” nock-high tear about 3 or 4 feet from the bow. This allows the arrow to get off the prong-style rest before it comes in contact with the fletch. Therefore, prong-style and drop-away rests are about even if the bow is set up correctly. However, the prong-style rest is less mysterious and is easier to correct if something does go wrong because it stays in the upright position.
Are the benefits of a dropaway rest real or bogus, or are they just another fad or trend?
The benefits of a dropaway rest are always real because they take >> continued on page 20

Is a drop-away rest good for shooting both 3-D and spots?
I believe drop-away rests are here to stay
away the need for perfect arrow tuning and always allows for fletch clearance when they’re properly set up. They serve a real purpose, especially for the novice archer or the archer that doesn’t have time to super-tune his rest and arrows. Unfortunately, because you can’t measure everything like you can a stationary rest at different stages of the draw cycle, it involves a certain element of trust between the archer and the rest. Not all personalities can put that to rest … no pun intended! I think drop-away rests are here to stay. Manufacturers have refined them until they got them to an exact science. The original drop-aways from 30 years ago had many inherent problems, which have since been overcome. Today’s drop-away rests have none of the original malfunctions, as long as they are maintained and set up properly. Since they do serve a real purpose, especially for the beginner, I think they will be with us for a long time to come.
Drop-away rests in general don’t have any weaknesses for target shooting if set up properly.
Arrow flight time on regular rests (not drop away); what’s more accurate; consistent long support or short support?
What is the best way to set up my drop-away rest? There are dozens of different types of drop-away arrow rests. However, the setup should be relatively simple. What you’re trying to accomplish is to get the arrow rest in a fully upright position approximately 2 inches before you reach full draw. This Powder-testing a drop-away assures you that you don’t have will tell you how long the the arrow sagging at full draw and rest is in contact with the arrow before it drops. there’s plenty of room for error. You also want to make sure that the arrow rest arm stays up for at least 12 inches of contact on the arrow shaft before it drops away, but it should drop away several inches before the fletch. Make sure the arrow gets a good start out of the bow before the rest drops away. You can find out exactly how long it stays up and when it comes up by putting spray-on white powder (like Desenex foot powder or “Shower After Shower” powder deodorant) on your arrow rest and shooting it through you drop-away rest. This will show you how long it’s on the rest before the arrest drops away.

Drop-away rests in general, don’t have any weaknesses for target shooting. Ginger Morehead shot a 556 out of a possible 560 at the Nationals with a drop-away rest and a short axle-to-axle bow. This proves that it’s very possible to shoot “lights out” at spots or 3-D with drop away rests. “It ain’t the fiddle; it’s the fiddler.”
Powder-testing will verify that the arrow is in contact with the rest for at least 12-14 inches.
It really depends on the cams, but in general, you want the arrow to be supported on your rest as long as possible, but it should leave the rest well before the fletch. The rest should give a minimum of 12 to 14 inches of support and should not have contact any closer than 2 to 3 inches before the fletch. To make sure your arrow fletch is not hitting the rest, you should powder test, which was addressed a few questions ago. n

A Final Donation Joe Gary enjoyed competitive sports, and he caught the archery bug in 1969 when he joined the National Field Archery Association. Joe spent most of his archery career shooting local and state tournaments. He and his wife, Linda, attended two Vegas Shoots and Joe absolutely loved competing on the national level. Joe’s love of archery didn’t stop at national tournaments. He loved the people he met at tournaments and the atmosphere of the competition and the tournament. While Joe participated in tournaments, Linda would travel with to watch him and even carry his bow for him during outdoor tournaments. Joe passed away on May 27, 2015 at 71 years old. In honor of Joe’s passing, Linda made a donation in Joe’s name to the NFAA Scholarship fund. “He loved archery so much, I couldn’t think of a better way to honor his memory,” said Linda. “He would be so pleased with the young people in archery who could win this money.”
