GREETINGS FELLOW ARCHERS! Welcome to another issue of the Vegas Edition and sneak preview of the 2017 3 Star Tour. We have a packed issue featuring accommodations, schedules, payouts and more!
BRUCE CULL president@nfaausa.com
The 2017 Vegas Shoot will feature the largest prize pot in archery history at $403,000 in cash prizes and scholarships. Our junior divisions continue to grow and we are excited to increase the scholarship awards to $27,000, in partnership with the Easton Foundations. Scholarships will be awarded to the top 3 places in each division ($1,000 1st Place, $750 2nd Place, $500 3rd Place). You will also notice a change in the division names. They have been simplified for 2017. Freestyle has been replaced with the bow type that is specific to each division. All divisions, except Barebow and Bowhunter, are now Compound or Recurve divisions. NFAA rules will still apply. We will also debut the new division, Championship Compound Open. This division is open to men and women compound shooters and will award $151,000, including a $51,000 grand prize. We are excited to make Cincinnati our new home for the 2017 NFAA Indoor Nationals. The Duke Energy Center will offer increased competition space in the heart of downtown Cincinnati. NFAA has worked with the area hotels to provide blocks of a high-quality standard at a discounted rate. For the best customer service and guaranteed hotel rooms, attendees and exhibitors should make their reservation through Cincinnati Housing. All rooms made on the NFAA block are refundable up to 24 hours prior to the reservation. Please be aware that rooms that are booked below the NFAA rate on discount sites are nonrefundable and cannot be cancelled once they are booked. Booking on the NFAA block also helps keep venue costs low and ensures that tournament
registrations can stay at the current rates. To book today, visit the link below. CINCINNATI HOTEL BLOCK: http://bit.ly/2bcYVmp housing@cincyusa.com The First Dakota Classic has been growing steadily for the last two years. In order to allow future growth, we needed a new format. The First Dakota Classic now features a Classic 600 qualification round, followed by head-to-head competition. Flighted payouts and a second chance tournament give everyone a shot at taking home a cash payout. 2016 was our first test of this new format and we are excited to improve on it for 2017. In 2016, we also added a new spin to our 3 Star Shoot Off at the First Dakota Classic. We will now offer a $5,000 amateur shoot off, in addition to the $10,000 professional shoot off. Archers that compete in all 3 Star events will earn a spot in the shoot off on Saturday, April 29. Archers will participate in a single arrow shoot off at increasing distances. Anyone that does not match the highest score will be eliminated. The last amateur and the last professional standing will take home $5,000 and $10,000 respectively. This issue also highlights a few of our 2016 Service Pin recipients. Our organization is packed full of history and long time supporters. It is our privilege to share their stories with you. Thank you to all of the 2016 recipients, you are commended for the support you have give the association in your ten plus years of membership. We hope that you wear your pin with pride, as it represents much in the spirit and interest you have shown the sport of archery. Thank you for your commitment and loyalty to the NFAA. We are excited to see what the future has in store for our growing sport.

I’m not really sure why that is,” Gore commented.

“Maybe they’re practicing more or they’re more determined. But with me, I just changed my mindset.”
The 250 participants battled the weather all weekend at the 3rd annual NFAA Outdoor National Target Championships in Yankton, SD, with a lightening delay on Saturday and high winds on Sunday. “The archers got to experience all of the elements this weekend,” said Bruce Cull, NFAA President. “That’s the fun part of outdoor archery, you never know what obstacles you are going to face. You have to be ready for anything.”
Paul Tedford, National Target Champion, Pro Male Freestyle.

2016 Adult Compound Academy This is event was perfect in every way. The NFAA facility is a welloiled machine. The extreme weather added much more to the overall experience. I would not be surprised if your next academy is an immediate sellout. Thank you for a wonderful weekend. -Demetrius Marscarenas, Chicago, IL For anyone who really wants to learn, this academy can benefit beginners to more advanced shooters. I had a blast and learned a lot! Twenty-five archers participated in the first-ever NFAA High Performance Adult Compound Academy, held in conjunction with the NFAA Outdoor Target Nationals. Hosted at the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center, the 3-day academy covered all facets of archery competition; including tournament preparation, training and conditioning, shot cycle and equipment set up. Professional archers Paige Gore, Paul Tedford, Braden Gellenthien and Chuck Cooley assisted in 1-on-1 training and video analysis with all participants.
“This was a great spin-off from our Youth Compound Academies,” commented NFAA President, Bruce Cull. “Whether it’s someone that is working towards the pro division or someone that just wants to tweak their form, there is definitely a need at all ages for high performance coaching.” 2017 ACADEMY DATES WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON!
–Kevin Frias, Aimes, IA I highly recommend the High Performance Academy. I came away with a wealth of knowledge that I know will help me tremendously. I recently got back into shooting after a 10-year injury. I started this academy on Friday and on Saturday I shot a personal best on the 900 round. I really loved the video analysis of my shot process and how I could improve some aspects of it to make me more accurate. I am glad to part of this great group of people! –Vernon Hess, Burlingon, KS

I got into archery when I was young due to Howard Hill. He was the best archer and killed everything on four legs. When I was 12 years old, I saw a short film that showed him hitting a tree stump over a tall hill. I also saw him hit a mountain lion in a tree. Before the lion could even hit the ground, he had another arrow in his chest. I had the opportunity to meet my hero in California and it was beyond great! They were having a tournament in Los Angeles, I was in the Marine Corps at the time and was able to meet him and explain that he was the reason I was in archery. Archery is the place for the people, the friendliest and most honest people you will ever meet. If you are in archery you will never meet a stranger. I’ve met people from the East Coast to the West Coast, Australia, New Zealand, and Okinawa Japan, among many places. I’ve been all around meeting new archery friends.

I was an official at the Las Vegas Shoot for thirteen years. Archery has been my life, besides the Marine Corps. I was at Camp Pendleton and got the mission to get a club together. They gave me land to build the range. I hope it still exists, even though I’m sure it’s changed. I enjoyed introducing archery to my fellow Marines. In 1958, I met a guy named Robert Ragsdale in the Marine Corps. I introduced him to archery and took him to his first tournament, an indoor shoot at Balboa Park. Rudy is 91 years old and resides in Vista, California.

TC PARKER
55 YEARS
TC Parker has been an archer and bowhunter since his childhood, having been introduced to the sport by his father in 1940. Casual arrow flinging turned to serious aiming when he was given the responsibility of maintaining his equipment, including finding and repairing his arrows. TC became involved in organized archery during his teen years, joining the local club Grays Harbor Bowmen. He helped the Club build a field range in 1952, and has returned to help maintain that range. He is a life member of NFAA, Washington State Archery Association, and Grays Harbor Bowmen. During his Marine Corps career (and subsequently following his wife through her US Navy service) he found archery to be a very portable sport. It requires minimal personal equipment or infrastructure - just a bow, some arrows and a target butt. Everywhere he was assigned there was already an archery range nearby, if not, he helped to build one. TC and Linda even chartered Armed
LYN DUHRKOPP
Forces Archers in Guam in 1981 and built a seven-lane range where they could shoot all the field distances by going twice around the course. A couple items of advice TC would pass on to new archers: Join a club. Use the range for practice and participate in the competitions. Even if you’ve got a spot to shoot in your yard or in the woods, the peer pressure and support of shooting with others will make you a better archer. And your club needs your support to stay in existence. Compete. Don’t wait until you are “good enough”. If your arrows go generally where they are pointed, you are already good enough to participate. If only those few people who have a chance to win attend a competition, the course would be an empty place.
50 YEARS
It’s hard to believe that as I look back over the last fifty years as a member of the NFAA, my love of archery has never wavered. Being drawn to archery at the age of ten, “Robin Hood” only adding fuel to my fire; my lifelong path of adventure began. Along the way I have met many wonderful people through my membership and participation in the NFAA that have shared my love of the sport. My most memorable and favorite tournament was held in Watkins Glen, New York.
A source of great pride was my involvement in the merging of two archery clubs. Around 1990, the Robertsville Archers and the Watchung Bowmen merged into the Wa-Xo-Be archers for the sole purpose of constructing an indoor range. What is now one of the finest in New Jersey, our indoor range offers activities ranging from shooting lessons, leagues and sponsorship of a youth program, to providing a place for the physically challenged to utilize our facilities to learn this amazing sport.
BILL BROWN
55 YEARS
William D. “Bill” Brown, Sr. and his wife, Emma Gene Brown, started shooting archery in 1957 in Shreveport, LA. They joined the NFAA/LFAA in 1957. Bill won his first Louisiana State Championship in 1972 and has captured the top spot several times throughout the years. During his earlier years, he was also an active bowhunter. Bill and Emma Brown have been active members of Red River Bowmen Archery Club since 1956. Both have been officers through the years and continue to support all archery in the area. Archery has been a family sport for the Browns, with their three children participating over the years.
a restrictive leg brace, sitting on a stool and now from a wheelchair. Bill recently shot in the 2016 Louisiana Senior Olympic Games for Archery in the Compound Release Class Age 80-84 and won with a score of 810. This was his first event to compete from the wheelchair. Bill celebrated his 81st birthday Oct. 1, 2016. To quote him “I am going to shoot as long as I can pull the bow back.”
Despite health setbacks, Bill has continued to participate in the sport he loves. His passion for the sport has contributed to his determination to not give up. In May 2016, Bill had his left leg amputated after nine years of battling a severe infection that occurred during knee replacement. During the past few years he has shot with
JERRY STINER
55 YEARS
When I started archery in 1960, I somehow got an NFAA magazine and I ended up joining it then. No one around my area knew anything about archery then. I’ve done it ever since and I still enjoy it. I shot competitively until 2006 but I still participate in bowhunting.
I have always shot barebow and finished 3rd at the Indiana State Outdoor Championships in 1963. I set a hunter record at that same tournament, but I don’t think that lasted very long. I still work on equipment and I’ll help anybody that wants to know anything about archery. Archery has changed so much since I started, especially with the compound. Boy there’s some good shooters now, truly amazing!

GARY SIMONDS
55 YEARS
With the help of my parents I bought my first commercially built bow in 1950. The bow was a lemon wood- longbow, it was purchased second hand and came with several feather fletched wooden arrows. From the next day forward, my favorite recreation was archery. Junior high school was the first time that I actually shot competitively, first in archery class and later in 1955 when I joined Beloit Field Archers, our local archery club. I joined the NFAA in 1956 or 1957 and I enjoyed competing in local tournaments until the end of high school in 1959. My NFAA membership expired while I was in the Navy but I took up archery again in 1962 after completing my active service. Beginning in 1962, I worked the next 17 years in the paper industry. I worked in various engineering departments of the largest paper machinery manufacture in the U.S. I attended college part-time while working and by 1969 I received my engineering degree. While working at the main plant I would shoot archery locally. As a product development, startup / troubleshooting engineer I had my share of travel. Occasionally when I suspected that my travel might take me near an archery facility or range, part of my luggage would be my arrows and a three-piece Hoyt takedown bow. There is little doubt that the advent of the compound bow in 1967 became a game changer for the archery industry in many ways, but for me it was also personal. Largely through the efforts of Tom Jennings and other early compound manufactures the compound bow received rather rapid consumer and NFAA acceptance. This acceptance led to engineering and automated manufacturing gaining a much stronger position in the archery industry.
an offer from a large archery company. In 1979 I left the paper industry and joined Bear Archery’s research and development department. I was with Bear Archery for the next 20 years. Eighteen of those years I was vice president of their research and product development. During that time my shooting continued, even though it became less competitive, it still remained a source of relaxation and enjoyment. In 1999 I moved on to Mathews Archery. Today I work for Mathews as an Engineering and Intellectual Property manager. As such I have a fully equipped off-site R&D facility with direct communication to the main manufacturing plant. As long as I feel that I can contribute, I will continue to work. As a member of the NFAA, a life member of the FFAA and a member of the Gator Bowmen there are still a lot of arrows to be shot. The best advice I ever received was: “Find a Job doing what you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” I believe I did just that. I owe a great debt of gratitude for all of the friendships and acquaintances made over the years at local shoots and national tournaments, hunting camps, as well as all of those in the archery industry that I have had the pleasure to work with and learn from over the years.
By the late 70’s a number of larger archery companies were producing compound bows as a major portion of their product offerings. During that same time frame, I used my free time to investigate and look deeper into the compound bow concept. This included rather in-depth testing and experimentation that resulted in some extra work as an archery consultant. In 1978 some of the archery consultant work that I had done previously led to scores, tournament info and more at www.nfaausa.com 17
EARLE BATEMAN III
50 YEARS
This year I received 50-year pins, 1 for Flo 1 for me. I was fortunate to have my wife Flo put up with me for 56 years, even though she said I had too many hobbies (31 to be exact). Flo was a good archer and still holds a state record in the bowhunter division. She passed away at 75 on 11/19/15. Archery provided many good times for our family. Together we hunted, shot competition, taught archery and participated in many archery events. In our family, 17 of 19 shoot bows including the 5 great grand children. One hold out was my age and his many years gun hunting gave him bad habits. The other, a high school English teacher, is either too lazy or too smart. My introduction to archery was when my uncle gave me a 70 lb. recurve tipped wood bow in 1949. He had made it Panama during the war where he worked building U.S. Pt. boats. He told me stories about hunting in the jungle that got me excited to bow hunt. He moved to Montana when I was 14. I was not able to pull the bow back until I was in high school and when I did it broke. I met and married my wife while in the service. I got out in 1960 and we moved to the Houston area in Texas. I didn’t become an archer until 1961 when Bob, a friend at work, asked me to go to the range to shoot on a Sunday afternoon. I told him I didn’t have a rifle. He said that was okay he wanted to go to an archery range. We shot a Wing recurve with wood arrows. That was my first trip to a field archery range but certainly not my last. That Wing bow became my 2nd bow and it shot many arrows. We had around 30 archers where I worked and I was chosen to order supplies to build 3,000 wooden arrows. From there, I started selling arrows. Not long after, people started asking me about bows. In 1964, I opened Earle’s Archery Shop. I tell a big story, as my mother would have called it, about asking my wife if she wanted a bow. She said she wanted a new dress instead. After 3 years with no new dress she finally took the bow. My family became active in the Baytown Bowhunting Club in 1963. The Baytown club had about 100 members. During the sixties I became president of our club and the bowhunting vice president of Texas Field Archery 18 ARCHERY MAGAZINE

Association. I served both positions until about 1970 when I went into archery full time. In the early seventies, Flo and I opened Archery Sports a full time pro shop in Pasadena. We offered target & bow hunter leagues, archery lessons, and a youth program. We outfitted and taught hundreds of archers to shoot. With the help of Mitch Vanya, who worked at NASA, we began manufacturing archery accessories at E. W. Bateman & Co. in Pasadena, TX. In 1981, we sold the retail part of the business and moved E. W. Bateman & Co. to present location at Canyon Lake, TX. Archers Haven Field Archery Range, which was named by my wife, uses the property for our club. One of our buildings has an indoor shooting area, so we never have to go far to shoot. I have learned that some days you are able to shoot good arrows, good groups and every thing works. Other times, you may not shoot so well. Not many people win all the time, so always try to be a good sport. The best reward for me is the pleasure to meet, shoot with and get to know so many archers. Whether you are a beginner or advanced archer, my advice is to set your goals, work on form and the basics of archery and continue to do so as long as you shoot. When you practice, work on shooting every arrow as well as you can. Never substitute quantity for quality. In 1977, Fred Bear told me that if he shot too many arrows he would be only be practicing his bad habits. Being 79, I can relate to that. I learned to shoot by spending hours shooting at home and on the range, setting my goals higher as I got better. Do not give up on your shooting. All of us were new to archery at some point.

ROBERT BITNER
65 YEARS
Robert M. (Bob) Bitner was introduced to archery at age of 14 by his Scoutmaster, Art Simpson. He directed Bob to an archery shop in downtown Chicago, where his first bow was purchased in September 1951. His first bow was a Bear bow with aluminum laminate in the limbs. The shop was owned by George Leavitt. Early on, Mr. Simpson was also his archery coach. Among his first coaches were Bill Perry and Ed Hintz, members of Gage Park Archery Club, who were instrumental in his early training. Right from the beginning, he shot lots of local competitions as an Intermediate recurve shooter. Frequently his indoor scores were higher than the adult men. By the Illinois Field/Hunter championship that year, he moved up to the adult division and won that tournament. The field/hunter round at that time was all unmarked. Bob joined the NFAA in 1951. He joined the PAA in 1962 as one of the original members. In 1958, he shot the first money shoot in Grayling, MI, it was sponsored by Bear Archery. He placed 2nd. The money shoot was held after the NFAA Field Nationals also held in Grayling, MI where he placed 7th (highest attendance ever at 1460 shooters). Also in 1958, Bob won the NAA Target Nationals in the Senior Division – started the tournament as a 20 year old and turned 21 on the final day of completion. During the tournament, he broke five records: Single York, Double York (by 100 points exactly), the 100 yard distance, 80 yard distance, and Grand Total. He also had one miss at 60 yards. At that time, he was the youngest winner of the tournament. He still has the scorecard. In 1967, Bob shot the first-ever 300 recorded at a major indoor tournament at the Las Vegas Open (The Vegas Shoot). He was shooting a Golden Eagle bow made by Root Archery. This was his first time ever shooting a perfect score. At the time, he was a bowyer for Root. In the early/mid-70s, Bob was president of the Michigan Archers Association for four years. It was during the controversial time of releases and compounds being introduced.
In 1984, both Bob and his wife Carol worked at the Olympics held in Los Angeles, CA. He was also accepted to work the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, GA, but events made it impossible to participate. In 1988, Bob was the NFAA Pro Representative. In 1994, Bob was hired by Mr. Spigarelli to travel to Italy, where he spent eight days helping them learn compound bow tuning and set up. He was referred to Spigarelli by Dave Barnsdale. Bob shot against pistol shooters three times: Arkansas, where he beat all the state police shooters scores; the team did not. He also was on teams at Mid-Michee Bowmen, and Big Rapids, both located in Michigan. Bob taught the NFAA Coaches classes in Darrington, WA. Bob is a life member of the following archery organizations: • Columbus Park Archery Club, Chicago, IL area • Mecosta County Rod & Gun Club, located in MI • Mid-Michee Bowmen archery club, located in Midland, MI • Michigan Archers Association • NFAA Archery companies he has worked for include: Root Archery (2X), Ben Pearson, Hoyt, Bear Archery (2X), Barnett International. Following that, he had his own bowstring business from 1991 to 2009. Since 2000, he has been involved in archery organizations at state, association, and club levels - as a club rep, association rep, been on committees at state level, and club board of directors. Some bits of shooting advice he would give: No tournament is over until the last arrow is in the target and scored.

Shoot the tournament same as you shoot in practice. In practice, shoot form, unconsciously shoot arrows.

Have fun. Some key memorable moments in his NFAA years: Shooting in the first Bear money shoot in Grayling, MI in 1958 after qualifying in the 1958 NFAA nationals. 1460 archers participated in those nationals. Got to meet and shoot with Rube Powell, 5 time NFAA champion. Won the 1954 Illinois State NFAA field championship in the Mens Division as a 16-year-old. Started dating fellow archer Carol Bergeron at the NFAA field Nationals in 1978 in Aurora, IL, and have been married to her since December 1978. First Name

JAMES THURMAN
50 YEARS
I have been fortunate to be a member of the NFAA for the past 50 years, joining in 1965. I have been asked several times ‘why have you stayed in the NFAA for all these years?’ and the answer is simple. I have always loved field archery and the passion at age 74 years of age is still there, but most of all it is the friends that I have made over the years. I have seen many changes to the sport of field archery during my 50 years of shooting from the recurve bows and shooting with finger tabs to release aids, compound bows with eccentric wheels, to compound bows with cams, improvement in arrows from wood, to fiberglass, aluminum, carbon composite. Better limbs on the bows from long axle-to-axle to short axleto-axle bows, twin cams, single cams, and hybrid cams that resulted in faster bows. The archery industry also has made better bow sights, scopes, arrow rests, stabilizers and bow string materials. All these things have made life for an archer a lot better. I started shooting at six years old with a homemade bow and the desire to shoot never left me. I moved to Kingsport, Tennessee in 1963 and went to a local sport shop. There was a rack of bows, and as I was looking at the bows a sales clerk asked me if I would like to try one. The excitement began to take over and that
RALPH MARTEN
day at the sport shop began my history of shooting. I bought a Bear Tameline 34 pounds, 69” long, a dozen arrows, quiver, arm guard and a finger tab. I met Bill McConnell at the sport shop and as I was purchasing my first real bow he invited me to the local archery club. Bill became my mentor, teaching me the fundamentals of shooting. I began shooting freestyle and several months later I entered in a local indoor tournament. Shooting in my first tournament in 1965, I was able to shoot a 283 and win in the beginner’s class. I went on to compete in too many tournaments to count, including 25 NFAA Outdoor National Field Championships. I graduated from the beginner’s class to the NFAA Professional Division and competed in as a pro for 32 years. I still attend tournaments in the Master Senior division.
50 YEARS
Ralph Edward Marten, known as Ed Marten, first joined the National Field Archery Association in 1960. At the time, Ed was living in Guthrie Center, IA where he shot at the local archery club with his friends in the back of the town’s hardware store. Ed had been shooting for 5 years when he decided to take his shooting to the next level. At just 19 years old, Ed, along with a group of his friends, decided to shoot the National Field Tournament in Grayling, MI. It was at this tournament that they only had 3 archers in their group and recruited Doug Easton to be their fourth! Over the years, Ed competed at the National level in multiple Indoor National Championships and Outdoor National
Championships. Ed stayed active in competitive archery until 2013, when he went blind in his right eye. Even though Ed no longer competes, he has still stayed a member of the NFAA to reach one of his lifetime goals: to be a member of the NFAA for 50 consecutive years.

GETTING OVER
TARGET PANIC Target panic affects most archers at some point during their archery “careers.” This unwanted hurdle can produce premature movement in the bow arm or even hamper the archer from getting the pin on the target. It is manifested when negative thoughts take over the thinking process as a shot is executed. When the archer becomes more concerned about missing, the target panic becomes greater and controls the situation.
If target panic is affecting your shooting, the best way to overcome the problem is to change your thinking process. Quit putting the emphasis on aiming or hitting the 10-ring and place it on what you can control, which is shooting a shot with good form. If you do that and maintain steady pressure at the target with the bow arm, the arrow will find its mark. You have to learn to trust your form and put less focus on aiming.
Over-aiming and placing too much emphasis on aiming is the root cause for the dilemma. As the pin is placed on the dot, the brain is giving you the green light to shoot. When it drifts off, it gives you a red light not to shoot. The starting and stopping of the shot process alters your form, causing increased pin movement that magnifies the problem. When you place extra emphasis on aiming, you lose forward pressure with the bow arm, resulting in additional pin movement.
To prove this process works, place a fivespot target at 30 yards. Shoot 15 shots with the emphasis on aiming and record your score. Then shoot another 15 shots, but this time concentrate on executing good form while the pin is floating. Comparison of the scores will tell you where your thinking should belong. If you are suffering from a bad case of target panic, go to a blank practice bale and shoot at 10 yards while using CONTINUED ON PAGE 24...
50 YEARS
Being in archery for 50 years, Dean has seen it grow from the longbow recurve to today’s compound. Dean started archery as a bowhunter. In his early years, he spent most of archery time in the woods instead of at the range. The little time he did spend at the range was shooting 3D animals. Dean has also been involved in Pope and Young as an official measurer for over 40 years. Dean went on to compete in multiple NFAA tournaments. His favorite NFAA memory was winning the Washington State Bowhunters Championship in 1968. He also met his wife through archery. She doesn’t participate anymore, because 8 years ago she tripped and fell while shooting. In an attempt to save her bow, she broke both elbows! Dean’s advice to new shooters is there is a lot that you can learn from participating in the NFAA. They broaden your horizons and allow you to see all aspects of archery: 3D, indoor, outdoor, field and much more!

The following are excerpts from Idiot Proof Answers to Archery’s Most Asked Questions by Bernie Pellerite. From the author: “When I decided to write this second book, I felt that it should be completely different from the first. To determine what most people wanted to hear, we took questions for over a year from the internet and from past seminars and shooter’s schools. Then we selected the top 275 from over 500 questions we had compiled. In this follow-up book to Idiot Proof Archery, we tried not to duplicate the material covered in the first book. So, most of Idiot Proof Answers is brand new material with new pictures and there is much more technical information in this book than in the first. The chapters include the following: Equipment, which includes bows, tuning, strings, peep sights, sights, rests, stabilizers, releases and arrows. Also Form, Aiming, Mental, Target Panic, Back Tension, Practice, Tournaments and Hunting. This article is a selection of questions and answers from the Bow Equipment chapter.
For beginners, what do you need to know for picking the best release? Beginners should be aware that there are dozens and dozens of different types of releases, most of which are marketed through discount stores that appeal to beginners’ limited pocketbook and limited knowledge. Unfortunately, starting out with a poorly made or inexpensive release may form habits that you will regret later, such as target panic and punching the trigger. Therefore, it is important to understand what makes a good release different from a bad release. It’s usually about trigger and trigger-travel. A good release has no perceivable movement in the trigger. A cheap release can have ¼ inch of travel before the release fires. Unfortunately, for beginners this sets up bad habits. As the trigger starts to depress and starts to travel, the receptors in the end of the fingers telegraph to the brain “Here it comes! Get ready! Here it comes!” Basically, it warns the conscious mind when the shot is about to go off, spoiling the surprise release and causing the brain to concentrate on the trigger 22 ARCHERY MAGAZINE
n

and grabbing the bow handle instead of concentrating on the target. Therefore, find a release that has zero trigger travel, or very close to that. You’ll be much better off. INSERT 8.97.A Caption: Starting out with an inexpensive release that has a lot of trigger travel may form habits that you will regret later. The Scott Mongoose is an example of a release that has no perceivable movement in the trigger.
What’s the difference between dual caliper, single caliper and hook releases? I know they’re different, but are there advantages to one over the other? Dual caliper releases were the first to be invented, as far as wrist strap releases go. Bill Scott of Scott Archery invented single jaw caliper and Scott still holds the patent. Hook releases have been around for years, also. There are major differences between these releases, but in general the dual caliper can let go of the string on the left jaw, or the right jaw or in the center. The single jaw caliper, which is my favorite, has a bias on it, which means it forces the string over to one side and the string has to come off the straight part of the jaw every single time. A modern hook release also lets go of the string more consistently, but in slow motion, the hook has to move out of the way. There is more string oscillation, however slight, but it is consistent on every shot. So, my favorite, at least for hunting, would be the single jaw caliper over the dual caliper, and then the hook release for target.
Single jaw caliper release.
Hook or hinge release.
I’ve heard that some pros punch their releases and win, so why shouldn’t the rest of us be able to also? There are a number of Pros that “control punch”, but they really don’t punch the trigger; they squeeze it. They shoot it like a rifle; hold on target, (put the pin on top of the target and hold it there) then squeeze the trigger. The key to being able to do this is not superior concentration, which most of them DO have, but BEING ABLE to hold the pin ON TARGET. This is impossible for 99% of all archers, for one reason or another. Therefore, the only way to win for most is to subconsciously pull and consciously immerse (mentally) into the exact center of the target – not the pin, letting the pin float. It will go where you concentrate. Looking at the pin instead of the target (for most shooters) will cause drive-bys, snap shooting, flinching and/or freezing … all forms of TARGET PANIC. After watching 2,700 laser sight pictures in my shooter’s school for 20 years, only 3 could keep the laser in the X-ring for more than 2 seconds; all 3 were top Pros.
Dual jaw caliper release.
Top pros are able to hold their sight in the center.
What is proper trigger pressure and travel for thumb triggers and caliper releases? For most personalities, trigger pressure on thumb triggers and calipers need to be heavy – in excess of 2 pounds; the heavier the better. However, not every release is capable of those settings. Furthermore, there should be absolutely NO perceivable trigger travel. Really light or “hairy” triggers and excessive trigger-travel are two of the main causes of target panic. If you set your trigger as heavy as possible, you won’t have a fear of setting it off prematurely. On a caliper, you should be able to put your finger on the trigger, squeeze off about half of the pressure, then “tow” it back with your elbow (no finger movement!) until the release fires. On a thumb trigger release, it can be a little more difficult. You need to reach full draw with the thumb trigger right in the crease of the thumb, where the thumb meets the palm of the hand. Apply pressure with the inside part of the thumb, not with the tip of the thumb. Relax the hand and, as you pull straight back using back muscles to pull the elbow rearward, the hand will start to collapse around the trigger. Just like the index finger release, the thumb trigger needs to be preloaded about half of its pressure; otherwise it won’t go off. You need to practice this on an empty bale until you discover (and master) the right amount of preload it takes for this particular release, so when you start pulling with your back, the release goes off after about 3 or 4 seconds. The Scott Mongoose is one of the few caliper-types that allows good trigger pressure with zero perceivable movement of the trigger. Whether you’re using a thumb trigger or caliper, the most important part – after being able to set a trigger to a heavy setting – is to have no perceivable movement. Any perceivable movement or slip in the trigger before it fires the release will warn the conscious mind, making it impossible to aim while you’re thinking about that trigger movement. Trigger travel causes the brain to anticipate the shot and will start you down the road to target panic. It is also important as to where you place your finger or your thumb on the trigger. Try to put it in the crease, away from the pad of the finger or thumb. The tactile receptors on the pad of the finger or
thumb send messages to the brain about movement in the trigger, thus distracting you from conscious aiming.
If you set your trigger as heavy as possible, you won’t have a fear of setting it off prematurely.
On a thumb trigger, you should apply pressure with the inside part of the thumb, not with the tip of the thumb.
Why does my point of impact change when changing from a wrist-strap release to a hand-held release? The way that wrist strap releases are fired and the way handheld releases are fired – if you’re talking about a hinge release – are two different applications. First, your anchor changes; on a wrist strap release, the palm is usually facing down. On a hand-held, the palm of the hand is usually facing outward to some degree. Secondly, the elbow pulls straight back on a wrist strap release (or not at all if you punch it). In handheld releases or hinge releases, the elbow should rotate up and behind the head. So, there will be some slight variances left and right in impact points between these two types of releases. Finally, there could be differences in impact points because of the difference in how the release lets go of the string, due to the dynamics of the shot and the string amplitude that each imparts.
I’m a right-handed shooter, shooting an aggressive 2-cam bow that has a twoprong rest. I shoot a Concho-style release and carbon arrows. When I paper test, I get a 2” left tear, no matter what I do. How do I correct this? It could be one of many things, but most likely it’s caused by the Concho release. Concho releases cause the wrist to bend at anchor. Upon execution, instead of a straight wrist coming straight back, the bent wrist recoils, causing string torque. You might try switching to any kind of wrist strap release or handheld release that allows the wrist to be straight and relaxed at full draw. Frequently, paper tears are not caused by your un-tuned equipment such as, rest, timing, nock set, center shot, arrows etc. but by flaws in your shooting form. Another cause could be that you may be introducing bow hand torque into the shot. Putting more or less hand in the bow until you find a torquefree hand position can eliminate this. Concho-style release.
When shooting a Concho release the wrist is bent which can cause unwanted torque.
Does a hand-held release improve your form over a strap release? A hand release facilitates a closed fist at anchor, which keeps the wrist straight and gives a solid bone-to-bone contact between the knuckles and the jawbone. As a result, it gives a perceivable, more solid anchor. But does it improve your form? That will really depend on the archer and whether or not he has good form to start with. On handheld and wrist strap releases, there are differences in anchor and the direction that the elbow moves.

What can I do to keep myself from punching the trigger?
Hand-held releases usually keep the wrist straight and gives a solid bone-to-bone anchor between the knuckles and the jawbone.
What are the differences between shooting a thumb barrel release such as a Carter or Tru-ball vs. a hinge or spike release? Thumb triggers, for the most part, have to be activated by pushing the elbow straight back against the wall of the bow, collapsing the hand around the thumb barrel, or relaxing the rest of the hand while the thumb maintains a hooked position, allowing the release to creep or slip forward, firing the release. A hinge release or spike release, however, requires rotation of the elbow up and behind the head, as opposed to pushing straight back with the elbow. This rotates the handle, causing the hook to slip off the cam.
Hinge releases should be activated by moving the elbow up and behind the head at a 45° angle.
Hinge releases should be activated by moving the elbow up and behind the head at a 45° angle. 24 ARCHERY MAGAZINE

Find a release that has no perceivable movement in the trigger. Here’s the test: Close your eyes and squeeze the trigger really, really slow. If you can feel the trigger move, that is not the release for you. The Scott Mongoose and some other manufacturers have very good triggers in this respect, but beware of any release that you can feel the trigger move while under load. You want to set the trigger heavy. No “hair” triggers! Hair triggers are the number one reason for target panic. When you have the trigger heavy, you can be confident in putting your finger on the trigger without setting it off. Punching the trigger can come from being afraid of putting your finger on the trigger because it’s too light, or because of “drive-by” shootings, which is a form of target panic. Practice on an empty bale with the heavy trigger. Squeeze off what you think is ½ of the trigger pressure. (If the heavy trigger is 4 pounds, try to squeeze off 2 pounds. This will take some practice to figure out what “half” is with your particular release.) Now, once you think you have squeezed off half, STOP. Don’t move your finger anymore. Now start “towing” the release back with your back muscle, moving your elbow straight rearward. Be sure your wrist is straight and relaxed, not humped up. If you relax your wrist, the wrist should slip back very slightly through the wrist strap, maybe ⅛ inch. When this happens, the index (trigger) finger will tow the trigger back, setting off the release. This should give you a very clean release with no anticipation. If you use your back muscle to trigger the release, you will be freed up to do nothing but AIM. When you punch, your brain commands your finger to move NOW! If your brain is telling your finger when to move, it is not aiming! Your eyes are on the target, but your mind is on your trigger. Try this for several weeks, 5 yards away on an empty bale to defeat the urge to punch the trigger and learn how to set off your release the proper way – subconsciously. When you go back to shooting at a target, go back gradually. Shoot several days at 7 yards, then several days at 10 yards, etc. until you are back at 20 yards. Also, when you are aiming at a target, look at the
target, not the pin or dot in your scope. Punching usually comes from looking at the pin and trying to hold it exactly on the target. Because it’s nearly impossible to hold a pin steady on a target for any length of time, the aiming time gets shorter and shorter, until you punch it as it goes by, which then becomes a “drive by”. You are looking at a moving pin and trying to put it on a target. Try it the other way; look at the target – which is stationary – instead of the pin, concentrate on it and surprisingly, the pin will go to the center of that target. Set the trigger as heavy as possible, squeeze of half of the trigger pressure, then “tow” it back with your elbow and back muscles.
This chapter was about release aids. In the next issue, I will be answering more questions dealing with release aids. Each issue will have more questions and answers from other chapters. Stay tuned! your best form. Talk yourself through the shot process following a few simple steps. Make sure the bow arm maintains steady pressure at the target. Once you commit to the execution, try to get rid of the arrow in one second and not over two. Continue this procedure until you become comfortable with the execution. Now put up a target at 10 yards and repeat the routine. Make sure your emphasis and concentration is on perfect form execution. When this is mastered, proceed to shoot at twenty yards with the same mental process. Since target panic is caused by the way you think, change your thought pattern to what you can control, which is shooting perfect form.

2017 SOUTHWEST INDOOR SECTIONALS It will be shot during the month of January at various locations across the Southwest. We will once again be shooting two Vegas Rounds in accordance with the NFAA C/B. Since there will be many locations in your state or in other states where you may shoot, you can pick where you would like to shoot, but remember that you can only shoot once for score in a style but you may register in as many styles as you like. For our Lifetime members (prior to the cutoff) you can only use your exemptions from payment one time and not multiple times if you choose to shoot more styles. Below is a list that I have received as of the date of publication from the Directors showing where and when the shoot will be offered. If you do not see your normal locations, then please contact your State Director for additional locations and dates. Bob Borges NFAA SW Councilman
