2017 sequence and effective shot execution. Dr. Amanda Adamson, professor of physical therapy at the University of South Dakota, led a workshop on injury prevention, injury treatment and strength training specifically for archers. Asked about what activities or presentations they found most valuable Dave Hebert of Wisconsin commented. “The one-on-one coaching after video analysis. Working on aspect of form that needed work. All the presentations were great; mental management needed to be a higher priority for me. Goal setting is also important too.” “I enjoyed having two video analysis systems and the workshop on injury treatment and prevention,” said Luis Lopez of Mexico City.
September 15-17, 2017 The National Field Archery Association, NFAA, held it’s second annual High Performance Adult Compound Academy September 15-17 at their headquarters and Archery Center in Yankton, South Dakota. Twenty-seven archers from all over the US, from New York to Hawaii as well as Mexico came to the NFAA headquarters and Easton Archery Center in Yankton, South Dakota. This Academy ran in conjunction with the NFAA Outdoor Target National Championship; over half of the participants of the Academy participated in both events. The coaching staff and guest pro shooters in attendance included Bob Romero of New Mexico, Dave and Paige Gore of California, Lexi Keller Wisconsin, Cassidy Cox of New

Mexico and Yankton staff coaches Josahan Jaime-Santacruz, Mackenzie Kieborz and Britta True. This year’s academy featured two videoanalysis systems that allowed archers to get feedback from multiple coaches as well as one-on-one coaching time with guest pro shooters. Archers had the opportunity to listen in on panel discussions where coaches and pros shared their experienced and lessons that have helped them advance in the sport. Topics covered during academy included mental management for competition; which was a big success, goal setting for competitive development, intro to equipment tuning, the importance of a shot
The Easton Archery Center provided several areas for archers to work on their skills including a classroom, blank-bale area for working with pros, adjacent equipment area to make adjustments and repairs to bows, a video feedback station where archers could watch themselves shoot in real-time, two video analysis stations for feedback from two coaches as well as a 20-lane, 60-yard indoor practice range. “These academies just get better every year. Paige, Lexi and Cassidy, our guest pros, are the women’s team representing the US at the World Archery Outdoor Championships in Mexico, talk about the best in the country.” said Bob Romero, guest coach and one of the founders of the NFAA Compound Academy series. “You have everything you could ever need in one location.”
ADULT COMPOUND ACADEMY |
SEPTEMBER 2017
“Both the Youth and Adult Academies are remarkable for their ability to bring archers in contact with some of the best coaches and professional archers in the country” - Yankton staff coach Josahan Jaime-Santacruz. The unanimous response of archers at the academy was overwhelmingly positive. When asked if they would recommend this academy to other archers, local Yankton archer Tara Fore responded “Absolutely! I was nervous because I am new to archery and my skill level is low, but the coaches calmed those nerves/ fears and really helped. No one gave up trying to help me be the best I could.” “Yes I think anyone who wants to improve their shooting could benefit from it. I enjoyed the class very much,” commented Edward Lewis of St. Joseph, MO. Stuart Sveeggen, second time participant to the Adult Academy and silver medalist at that weekend’s Outdoor Target Nationals remarked “Yes, great info for new shooters & good refresher for experienced archers.” “Both the Youth and Adult Academies are remarkable for their ability to bring archers in contact with some of the best coaches and professional archers in the country,” said Yankton staff coach Josahan Jaime-Santacruz. “You spend a several days working one-on-one with professional archers that are at the top of their game. You get to ask all the questions you can, getting video feedback from experience coaches that shows you what you can do to be better. Everyone is here to help each other be better at the sport they love. You can’t get this just anywhere and the NFAA works very hard provide all their members this opportunity.” n

he 2017 Outdoor National Target Championship was held for a fourth year at the Easton Yankton Archery Center in Yankton, South Dakota. The two-day tournament began on Saturday, September 16 at 11:00 a.m. and concluded with an awards ceremony on Sunday, September 17 at 2:00 p.m.
Over 200 archers participated in the annual event. Competitors came prepared for the drop in temperature. The previous week in Yankton had a daily average in the high 80s, but Saturday morning a cold front with strong winds dropped the temperature to 54 degrees. The overcast sky cleared on Sunday and it was a beautiful second day for the tournament.
Paige Gore returned to the competition this year to defend her record breaking win from last year, securing the Pro Female Freestyle (PFFS) trophy by just one point against her equally matched competitor Cassidy Cox. Robby Weissinger in the Adult Male Freestyle Limited Recurve (AMFSLR) came back from a seven point deficit on Saturday to a landslide win on Sunday with a final score of 1321 to earn the bowl in his division. Four year consecutive winner Merle Eggersgluess also returned to Yankton, taking the winner spot in Master Senior Male Freestyle Limited (MSMFSL). n

What did you like best about it? The weather was great! Relaxing between shooting times, it was a nice break from school. — DANNY BUTTON

Recipients The NFAA introduced the Fellowship of Robinhood in 1959. Entry into the club is defined in our constitution: “Any member who telescopes an arrow, previously lodged in the highest scoring area of a target during an NFAA sanctioned event, shall be eligible for recognition in the Fellowship of Robinhood.” Many archers have felt the excitement of this unique achievement in their own archery career. Congratulations to these two archers, Matilda Miller from Iowa, and Holden Hegg from South Dakota, who achieved a Robinhood at this year’s Outdoor National Target Championships!
AGE 12 READLYN, IA
Was this your first time attending the Outdoor National Target Championships? Yes, this was the first time I shot the outdoor national target championships. I also shot the outdoor field national championship as well as a few other fun tournaments in Yankton this year. At what age did you start practicing archery? What got you interested in the sport? I was 5 when I started shooting bow. My dad bow hunts and he started all of us kids pretty young. How did you feel after shooting a Robinhood? I didn’t even realize I shot the Robinhood until I got to the target and noticed, “hey that’s my arrow!” I was super excited this is the first Robinhood of my archery career. What did you think about the event? I have shot NASP the last two years, and since I was 5 I have been shooting left handed. So the really cool thing about the outdoor national field competition this year was that I shot right handed. I used my mom’s bow and had only practiced with it for 2 weeks before the tournament, I shot a Robinhood and got second place, it was awesome!

Was this your first time attending the Outdoor National Target Championships? Yes. At what age did you start practicing archery? What got you interested in the sport? First started when I was 10 years old. A friend of mine was shooting archery and asked if I would like to try it, so I did and have enjoyed ever since. How did you feel after shooting a Robinhood? I was excited. This was my second Robinhood! What did you think about the event? I thought that the shoot was very fun and organized. I really enjoyed participating and making new friends. n

Service Pins MARTHA & GORDON DIEHL Martha and Gordon Diehl have been members of NFAA for 60 years. A consummate outdoorsman, passionate about hunting, fishing and trap shooting, it was only natural for Gordon to embrace bowhunting and archery. In 1954, a friend returning from the university with tales of hunting with bows and arrows, fascinated Gordon and he began shooting a longbow and cedar arrows. He joined with a few friends to form the Walker River Bowmen and was instrumental in the club becoming an affiliate of the Nevada Bowhunters Association and the National Field Archery Association. Gordon loved to compete, and archery organizations provided him opportunity to hone his prowess with a bow. A natural teacher and mentor, it was not long before he convinced Martha to join him in archery competition and bowhunting. Gordon and Martha owned a small-town appliance and archery store. Gordon was one of those guys who could fix just about
60 YEARS anything. Compound bows intrigued him. From early experimentation with hardware store pulleys bolted onto shortened recurve limbs to the incredible technology of modern bows, Gordon adapted and was always eager to shoot the next advancement in archery. Over the years, Diehl’s Archery was a dealer for Damon Howatt, Martin, Hoyt, High Country, Jennings, Jennings/Bear, and Mathews. Although he loved fast bows and high-tech arrows, he never strayed from being an instinctive shooter. For decades, younger archers all over Nevada strove to out-shoot the master of the Bowhunter class. He understood that instinctive shooting was not for everyone; he installed sights on Martha’s bow and could always help his customers fine tune sights and releases and get broadheads flying straight. As archery dealers, both Gordon and Martha believed that children should learn to shoot instinctively first and add sights and releases after they developed an understanding of the bow
Tournament in Las Vegas. The boy with Martha and Gordon is Wade Barcellos and was one of the first of a long line of young people mentored by Diehl’s.

and arrow and mastered the basics of good archery shooting form. While Gordon was repairing and installing appliances for Yerington residents, Martha ran the shop and it became de facto headquarters of the Walker River Bowmen. Members dropped by after work to see the latest bows, share hunting stories, and stay abreast of club activities. Diehl’s always supported hunting and sportsmen organizations. The shop donated countless bows, arrows, and other archery gear to WRB and NBHA raffles. Gordon and Martha never missed work days or club functions. Over the years, Martha has baked hundreds of delicious desserts for club potlucks, flipped burgers at shoots and league nights, posted scores on scoreboards, and served as club secretary and treasurer. Gordon has set 3D courses, maintained the Walker River Bowmen Field course, and helped build the club indoor shooting facility and outdoor range. Gordon and Martha’s greatest contribution to the archery world was the continuous mentoring of young men and women. Diehl’s always had one or two high school students working after school, getting incredible discounts on bows they could not afford, and

spending weekends with Gordon, hunting waterfowl and upland game birds, fishing, competing in Nevada’s archery tournaments, and, of course, bowhunting. He taught them to respect and love the animals they hunted. He taught them the ethics of a hunter and how to care for their trophies. He taught them to glass and stalk in Nevada’s high sagebrush basins. With his bowhunter friends he experimented with homemade ground blinds and different hunting techniques and shared his knowledge with beginning hunters. Hiking Nevada mountains in search of game has become difficult for Gordon, yet he is still shares his knowledge of favorite hunting spots and helps archers ready hunting equipment in his garage archery shop. Many Nevada bowhunters consider Gordon their best friend, mentor and hunting partner.
55 YEARS
“As a kid my neighbor boy and I made our own bows and arrows and shot at paper pie plates on hay bales. Thus began my love of archery and it has continued throughout the years. I joined a local club, Kickapoo Bowhunters, the Illinois State Archery Association and the NFAA in 1962. I still shoot competition now at 77 years old. I have attended the NFAA Field Championship 47 times, 46 of those consecutively, starting with the 25th anniversary Nationals in Aurora, Illinois in 1970. I have also attended many State Championships, two North American Championships and three National Senior games as well as hundreds of local tournaments. What made me stay a member of NFAA for so many years was the enjoyment of archery and competition. Some of the biggest perks are the friends I have made from all over the United States. The archery sport has some
of the friendliest and most honest people I have met in my many hobbies. For the last 30 years or so I have always shot a purple bow, had purple accessories and wore a purple shirt. The first two bows Continued on page 18 ...

were custom painted because nobody made a stock purple riser. As many of my friends and fellow archers will attest to, many whom I’ve shot with might have forgotten my name but remember me as the “purple guy”. I was one of the first shooters in Southern Illinois to shoot Freestyle. I began my shooting career with an Indian recurve bow and shot instinctive, wearing the NFAA Instinctor patch on my club shirt. I resisted shooting compound for a few years until I attended the Golden, Colorado Nationals. There was a distinct difference between the scores of the recurve shooters and the compound shooters, due to the wind. The very next day after returning home from that tournament,
LASZLO TOSER
I ordered a new compound bow and a rope spike release at my local archery shop. In the three weeks following, while I waited for my new bow to arrive, I practiced with the release on my Hoyt recurve bow. I have seen the sport change a lot throughout the years! My advice to new and upcoming archers: remember to enjoy and have fun in the sport, don’t let score ruin your enjoyment of it.”
50 YEARS
When I was a young boy, living in Hungary, I made my own bow and arrows for fun. I moved from Budapest in 1957 and ended up in Leesburg, FL. I lived next door to Wayne Aiken who was a Colt Firearm representative and involved with the Wildwood Archery Club. He invited me to go with him and had a spare bow so that I could try it out. A job change led me to move again to Lakeland, FL where I joined Ridge Archery Club. There I met Frank Gandy who helped me improve to a competitive level. Joining
the NFAA gave me the opportunity to shoot in other state tournaments. It wasn’t long after that, in a tournament in Kentucky, that began of my love and commitment to archery. In 1968, I moved to Gainesville, FL and joined the Gator Bowman. Two years later I became club President and improved my skills significantly. I always made a good effort to teach other people and children about archery. The fellowship of the sport was my favorite part. When you learn the right way, like I was taught, then the love of the sport comes from inside. Stay committed to the sport and strive for the best you can be. Now that I’m 80 years old, with both shoulders repaired, I’m still shooting and still loving it. From bare bow to sight; from the first Jennings compound to the present compound with release. The most fun I have is shooting with my son and grandchildren at the Bowhunters Jamboree every Labor Day weekend. They kid me about holding my bow so long, but no adjustable sights are allowed in this tournament. This shoot takes me back to bare bow, the beginning. Thank you, NFAA!

“My start in archery happened when I was in 4th grade. I saw Howard Hill in short films on Saturday mornings. I cut some shafts from a fence post and started to make arrows. My Dad bought me a Ben Pearson fiberglass takedown bow from Sears. About 1956 my father purchased a farm in Bland, MO where I met Joe Moberly, who mentored me in the sport of archery and was a friend of Earl Hoyt. We all joined the NFAA as we followed the handbook guidelines in building our range. I let my membership lapse while in college, but rejoined in 1962 and have stayed a member because the organization is our national voice for all styles of shooting and equipment both target and hunting. I believe the NFAA has been instrumental in leading the states through many hard fought battles and legislation changes. Linda, my wife of 55 years, and I, opened Bonnie Bowman Archery in 1966 with help from Earl Hoyt. We had a small 1800 sq ft store with a 17 yard shooting range and my work shop. In 1972 I hosted a money shoot in
“The next most important thing in my opinion is HAVE FUN shooting your bow.” Hawaii. We gave out over $11,000 in cash and merchandise. The next year was a $12,000 tournament! These events were sanctioned by the NFAA, my mentor Roy Hoff wrote them up in Archery Magazine. I have too many happy and favorite tournament stories! Most recently I started to shoot again in 2016- after a 13 year complete layoff. I received lots of well wishes and advice from friends all over the USA and won back to back National Outdoor Field Championships in my division. I would say this to archers who are getting into the sport: Go to a pro shop or find someone that is a good shot and knowledgeable enough to help you decide on equipment. Pay attention to personal actual draw length and Axle to Axle length of your bows. Join an archery club and meet new friends. Enjoy all the 3 D shoots marked or unmarked, but practice on field and hunter targets. These targets give you the best visualization of your shooting level and improvement. The next most important thing in my opinion is HAVE FUN shooting your bow.”

In 1966 I started bowhunting with the men at work, and soon after we started Kick-A-Poo Bowmen Archery Club. The more we learned about archery, the more we realized it was a family sport. As we improved, we shot all around Tennessee, and archery became a family hobby for me with my wife and daughter. We practiced most every afternoon and then travelled every Friday to a shoot. We camped with the same people every weekend and built friendships with other families that we still enjoy today. As our club grew, we began hosting tournaments. The second weekend in July was our big invitational known as “The Silver Arrow”. One of our members was a woodworking craftsman, and he made our beautiful awards with a “silver arrow” on them. Our annual shoot grew to over a hundred shooters in attendance. As a club leader, I helped in all aspects of the preparation, registration, awards and clean up.

I served as a State Director, State President and Southeastern Councilman in the 1970s. As a family, we always participated in our southeastern championship, and one year my daughter and I attended the nationals. My wife was unable to attend due to her job. I don’t recall the reason, but my daughter didn’t shoot.

in the hot summer heat. The Archery Magazine mentioned her in their article about the shoot that year. Probably the most unique archery experience I’ve had, was hunting wild hogs with my bow. I killed one about 20 years ago and was honored to have an article in the Archery Magazine about my experience. Archery has changed greatly since 1966, from the equipment to people’s awareness of the sport. I believe that if we teach archery and how to hit a target first, it is beneficial and builds confidence for hunting. If they are hunters, they are better hunters after learning about field archery. SERVICE PINS | STORIES
ROBERT “BOB” TALLON At the age of 10 in Toronto, Canada, Robert (Bob) Tallon was using his stick bow and a knitting needle for an “arrow” and shot it through his mother’s window in 1936. Bob’s archery service started in 1956 at the Panther City Archery Club as the original secretary when he got a handbook on how to form an archery club. He served as President and Vice-President over various years. The following year, Bob joined the National Field Archery Association as well as the Texas Field Archery Association. During the 1970s, Bob was a member and officer of the Tarrant County Bowhunters for 10 years. He also was a member of the Irving Bowhunters Association. After the Panther City Club disbanded, Bob joined the Cowtown Club in 1980 and is now a life member.
60 YEARS
Bob has taken wild hogs, feral goats, deer, turkey & varmints. We often refer to him as a conservationist as he spent much time selectively taking limited shots. He went hunting for moose in Newfoundland in 2002. He has also hunted deer in Texas, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Kansas.
Arlington, TX, it’s kept him busy this past year. His love of archery and participation in events is my inspiration. Recounted by Darrell Becht (friend and fellow archer) n
He has also competed in various local, national and international tournaments over the years including the North American Tournament in Mexico City in 1985. In recent years, a favorite competition of his was the Bug Scuffle Ranch Shoot near Leakey, TX. Bob shoots a compound bow for hunting, but has been a traditional shooter from the beginning, nearly 81 years ago. (Bob is now age 91). As a volunteer coach for the archery classes at Martin High School,

IT’S A MUST-SEE DESTINATION FOR ARCHERY ENTHUSIASTS!
By Terry Wunderle
H
ow could your archery career change if you knew that you would not fail? Most archers are capable of winning local, state, or national tournaments. The main obstacle inhibiting them from accomplishing this feat is their mental attitude. The most important piece of archery equipment you have is your brain, but in most cases it is the least used. Once an archer learns a quality, consistent form, ninety percent of the success comes from a positive mental approach with his or her shooting. How does an archer develop a positive attitude about ones ability to shoot? The key word in that question is the word “shoot.” I did not ask about the ability to win. Winning is the result of an archer performing with consistent form. The only thing that you can control is executing every shot exactly the same. During practice, can you shoot five, ten, sixty or a hundred shots with identical form? If not, make it your goal and practice until you achieve it. Once you have accomplished this objective, you will have a more positive attitude toward your ability to shoot. Look at this situation logically. Can you stand there and shoot sixty shots with the very same form? That should not be hard to accomplish. If you can do that, then you will have done the best at the tournament that you can achieve. Accomplishing sixty shots with identical form sounds like an easy thing to do, and it is. The problems arise when you start shooting a tournament and shift your objective to hitting an “X” or winning the tournament. This change in thinking makes it very difficult to duplicate your form. You will become overly-concerned 24 ARCHERY MAGAZINE
n
Fourth Quarter 2017
about the aiming process, which in turn causes the form to break down. Firmly believe in your ability to duplicate the shot, trust your form, and shoot. Be optimistic about your ability as an archer. You, like everyone else, will face an occasional problem; but problems are not a difficulty until you lose sight of your goal. Some challenges are only a situation looking for a solution. Refocus on your objective of shooting each shot with the perfect form you have practiced. By staying positive, failures will only be viewed as temporary events in your journey. The only way you can fail is by not trying to achieve your
purpose. Walt Disney was responsible for creating the Disney Dynasty. It was his dream and his goal. Even though he went bankrupt on four different occasions, he never lost sight of his dream. When you think about an upcoming tournament, carry an upbeat attitude. In your mind say, “I can stand there and shoot sixty shots with the same form.” If that is your goal and you do not change it, then you will perform the best that you are capable of doing that day. n [For more of Terry’s tips see Archery: Think and Shoot Like a Champion at wunderlearchery.com]
