GREETINGS FELLOW ARCHERs...
Archery—and especially the NFAA—lost a great member recently to cancer: Mr. Bob McCutcheon. Please read the following obituary and a special message from Judy McCutcheon, Bob’s wife and our Illinois State NFAA Director. We will all miss Bob and his incredible loyalty to the NFAA and the entire sport of archery! Rest in peace, Bob. n Robert S. “Bob” McCutcheon II, 58, of Virden, IL, died Thursday, May 24,2012 at his residence. Bob was born March 30, 1954 in Springfield, the son of Robert Stewart and Luella Kathryn Stephens McCutcheon. He married Judith L. Nyilas on November 22, 1975 in Springfield. Bob graduated from Ball Chatham Elementary and Glenwood High School. He also attended Western Military Academy. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Sangamon State University and worked with his father, Bob Sr., to operate McCutcheon’s Auto Service in Springfield until 1990. He then worked for SIU School of Medicine Orthotics and Prosthetics Department as an orthotics/prosthetics technician for 12 years. Bob then worked for Hinds Environmental Service in Springfield. He has been employed by Farmer Environmental Services of Edwardsville since 2008. He was dedicated to the sport of archery, and opened his own 4 Archery Magazine

archery range and pro shop, Prairie Archery, in 1994. He was very active in both the state and national archery organizations, holding various offices over the years, and has been the Councilman for the Great Lakes Section of the National Field Archery Association for the past 10 years. He was instrumental in organizing the National Archery in the Schools Program State Championship for the past 6 years, and loved introducing young people to the sport. He received the National Field Archery Association’s Medal of Merit in 2009 and the President’s Award in February 2012 for his dedication to the sport and the organization. He also enjoyed working on his property, gardening and landscaping. But most of all, he loved dancing with his wife. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Stephen Gail Blakeman. He is survived by his wife, Judy of Virden; son, Robert Stewart McCutcheon III of Hettick; two grandchildren, Shelby Nicole McCutcheon-Eyer and Nathan Robert McCutcheon; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Message from Judy McCutcheon My Husband Thirty-seven years ago, give or take a few months, I met the man I was to marry ... on a blind date, believe it or not! Only, I didn’t know it was a date. My best friend and his best friend got married, and he saw me at their wedding. He asked to meet me ... they told him I already had a boyfriend! He persisted—my friend invited me to go to the Lake Club with her and her husband for their one month anniversary! I should have been a little suspicious that they wanted a ‘third wheel’ along for their celebration, but I agreed to go. Carol came and picked me up ... and when I got to their house, Bob was there waiting for me. I was told that Jon had invited him! Sitting there across the table from him, I thought to myself, “that is the man I am going to marry.” One year and one month later, I did! When he told me he wanted to learn to dance, I could hardly believe it! We joined a country dance group and started dancing!
We had such a good time and met a lot of nice people, and he actually didn’t have two left feet. We got away from it for a while when country dancing went out of fashion and our instructors retired from dancing, but started back into it several years ago, reconnecting with old dance friends and making new ones. Even during his illness, he tried to dance as much as he could, but it finally became too hard on him and we had to stop. When he told me he wanted to build his own archery range and shop, I said “go for it”! It truly was more of a hobby than a business. Bob, bless his heart, gave most of his services away; he just couldn’t bring himself to charge money for something that he loved to do! And, because of that, we made so many friends. Bob touched the hearts and lives of so many throughout his life, with everyone he came in contact with, but most of all through archery. He loved working with kids and families to introduce them to archery. He got such satisfaction in watching them progress, seeing the happy smiles on their faces when that first arrow actually hit the target, and their excitement when they first hit the bull’s eye. He enjoyed working with the Illinois DNR to put together the National Archery in the Schools Program in the state, and worked hard every year along with fellow Illinois Archery Association members to put on their State Championship. He was committed to the sport of archery and dedicated to helping run both the state and national organizations. He loved his family ... his son, and his grandchildren, and was looking forward to introducing the
kids to archery; but fate in the form of cancer intervened. Stewart and I will have to carry on with that for him. So many years have passed, so much life, love, fusses (never really a fight!), and caring for each other. He has been my best friend. We grew up together, raised a child together, cried together, laughed together, traveled together, played and worked at archery and shooting sports together, and hunted together. Most of all, we just enjoyed each other’s company. Our marriage wasn’t perfect; there were times when we grew apart, lost our way from each other, but we found our way back and were stronger for it. The best thing that Bob ever did for me, besides loving me, was to encourage my independence and support me in whatever decisions I made. Even when they were wrong, he never said I told you so! Same for Stewart (although he may have told him “I told you so” once or twice!). I will miss him terribly, as will all those that cared for him. I will
be strong for him, and try to carry on as best I can for him. We will all carry on, and be better for having known him and loved him. Go softly into the light, my love, and be at peace in the loving arms of Jesus.
The following is from an old friend who was here for a 2 year residency in Orthotics/Prosthetics in Bob’s department at SIU School of Medicine, back in the early 90’s. We became close friends with him and his wife, and were so sorry to see them head back to Texas (and we have not seen them since they left 18 or so years ago!). He saw my Facebook post and this was his response: “I am so sad and am praying God will give you peace over the loss of one of the best men I ever had the honor of knowing. A true friend to all who knew him. A great man who loved the outdoors and loved teaching others the art of archery. There were none who continued on page 27

avoid tournament anxiety Terry Wunderle
When I was at a field tournament, I met a young man on the practice range who approached me and asked, “Could you please help me?”
“What’s the problem?” I inquired.
He replied, “I have been shooting great and thought I might win this tournament, but I can’t hit anything this morning.” After watching him shoot, I suggested that we go off to the side and talk for a while. He had built up so much anxiety that his muscles were too tense to execute a good shot. When we redirected his thinking and I showed him how to relax his muscles, he was able to shoot groups that made me envious.
with the image of you shooting a specific target such as a 50-yard target or perhaps the 35-yard fan. Before a big tournament, try to mentally shoot every type of target. Visualize yourself shooting each arrow with perfect form and hitting the very spot where you were aiming. This exercise is relaxing and is a definite confidence booster. When preparing for the next tournament, set your goals where they should be directed. Make your goal to shoot each and every shot with the best form that you can accomplish. If you achieve this goal, you will have had the best tournament that you are capable of shooting. If this is not good enough to satisfy your expectations, then seek help from a professional coach. He or she should be able to assist you in reaching the level you wish to achieve. n
Most archers handicap themselves before they shoot their first arrow. Their pre-tournament thought process builds anxiety to the point that it creates nervousness and muscle tension. Their thinking is directed at winning the tournament, impressing their friends, or beating a buddy. Do not forget that the main reason we shoot is because we enjoy it. Our main goal should be to shoot the best possible tournament that we are capable of shooting. Realistically, this will not be good enough for most archers to take home a trophy. The capability of the top archer is higher than the average archers because they have worked very hard to raise their shooting to that level. Concentration, good form, a strong mental attitude, and lots of practice have raised the top level of archers to a new high. All archers should set their goals to shoot the best that they are capable of shooting at each tournament. If you can do that, you are a winner. If you want to shoot better, then you will have to raise your capability by working harder. The pre-tournament focus should be directed at a positive mental image of yourself executing a shot with perfect form. This will enhance a positive attitude and will help relax your mind and muscles. If you’re thinking process goes back to winning, quickly replace those thoughts

IFAA NORTH AMERICAN FIELD ARCHERY CHAMPIONSHIP (NAFAC 2008)
NFAA Director—Missouri
December 13-14, 2008 at Homestead, Florida The IFAA, in cooperation with NFAA-USA and its member Florida Archery Association (FAA) have approved the Everglades Archery Club to host the IFAA-sanctioned 2008 NAFAC on 13-14 December 2006. FAA will lend assistance and administration to the shoot. The Everglades Club is located south of Miami in Homestead, Florida. If you have never been to Everglade Archers range, you are missing a very diverse shooting experience. The venue offers shots over the lake with mild up-hill and downhill settings. There are no other ranges in Florida like this one. You really do need to be in Florida at some time during the “winter” months. What an excuse to go South with the Snowbirds and enjoy, even for a few days, what they enjoy all winter. Many “Snow Birds” will already have made their way South for the winter. We invite you to come on down! The Price is Right — the time is right!! With the normal format of 28 Field, 28 Animal, and 28 Hunter, the range is set up for four across shooting and you will have plenty of arrows to shoot. Everglades is noted for its “Beast Feast” and food will be served both days. th LOCATION — For directions and map to range, enter 17415 SW 264 St., Homestead, FL, at http://maps.google.com/. SCHEDULE — Saturday, 13 December: 0730 assembly, 0800 28 Field and 28 Animal (no bonus spots). Sunday, 14 December: 0730 assembly, 0800 28 Hunter. Awards within 30 minutes after last person finished. RULES (Games and Equipment) — As per the IFAA Book of Rules. SCORING — As per the IFAA Book of Rules (must cut the line to score). NFAA Field, Hunter, and Animal Targets st nd rd AWARDS — NAFAC Medals – 1 , 2 and 3 in all division/styles. REGISTRATION FEES (US Dollars) — NAFAC Fees: Adult, Veteran and Pro, $35.00; Junior and Cub, $25.00; Pro Pot (100% payback), $100.00 in addition to registration fee. Mailed entries should be postmarked by 5 December. Phoned or E-mailed registrations through 11 December will be accepted for a $2.00 surcharge for paying at the shoot. Registration at the shoot will require a $15 late fee added to the normal registration fee. SEND REGISTRATION form and check to: Florida Archery Association, Timothy O. Hello and happy summer! Hope everybody is enjoying the opportunity to do some outdoor shooting. A HUGE thanks goes out to everybody that participated in the Midwest Sectional Outdoor Championship on June 23 and 24. Independence Bow Hunters did another fine job hosting the tournament for our area. Congratulations to all the MBH members who earned Sectional Championship awards. A special congratulations goes out to MBH member Beau Collins who won Cub Male Freestyle with a score of 1120, which was also the HIGHEST score of the entire tournament! I’m pleased to report that participation for the event was up—I mean REALLY up! In 2011 total participation (both locations) was 67. This year we had 83 scores turned in. That’s an increase of almost 25%!! The classes boasting the largest increases were Male Freestyle divisions for Pro, Master Senior, Adult and Cub. Overall, female participation was also up from 8 in 2011 to a total of 12 participants this year. Great news
My good friend Marcia with the Canadian bear she took in June. Marcia’s the wife of our NFAA Section Councilman, Ray Jones.
all around!! The NFAA sanctioned State Outdoor Championship will be July 14th and 15th. IBH will also be hosting this event. Let’s keep the momentum going and see if we can break last year’s record for attendance for this tournament, as well! If you are new to field archery there is no better opportunity to come out and learn about the sport. We will group you with knowledgeable shooters that are anxious to help you learn. There are some great
National Level shooting opportunities in July! The 3rd and final leg of the 3 Star Tour will take place July 7th and 8th in Yankton, SD. That same weekend, NFAA Headquarters will also host the NFAA 3D Unmarked National Championship. Registrations will be taken right up to the day of the events. Just check out the NFAA website for more details at www.fieldarchery.org. Until next month…God Bless! n

Easton Foundations National Field Archery Association Foundation
EASTON FOUNDATIONS NATIONAL FIELD ARCHERY ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION JOINT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 1. Deadline for 2012 scholarship applications to be received at the NFAAF Office in Yankton is December 31, 2012. The winners will be announced at the World Archery Festival Vegas Shoot, February 2013. 2. The NFAA Scholarship Committee will review and rank the applications, place each applicant into the appropriate category and present their suggestions to the Joint Scholarship Approval Committee for their approval. The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee, consisting of two Directors of the National Field Archery Association Foundation and two Directors of the Easton Foundations, will make a joint decision on winners and the final amounts for each scholarship. 3. The NFAA National Office will notify all applicants if their application was denied or approved, and the amount of the scholarship. If approved, it will also describe the procedure for the scholarship payment. 4. For all scholarships greater than $500, the recipient will receive an Archery Activity Report form that must be completed and sent to the NFAA National Office twice a year, showing their archery activities during the year. Applicant Requirements The maximum amount of all scholarships for the first three years will be $50,000 per year. The goal is to provide 50% of the scholarships to recurve archers and 50% to compound archers. A secondary goal will be to split the scholarships equally between men & women. • Applicants must be a member of the NFAA or the NAA/USA Archery. • Applicants that are not graduating from high school in the current year (JOAD, NASP, junior high, or high school freshman/sophomore archers) may apply. n For this group, any approved scholarships will be held by the Foundation until the student notifies the Foundation they are graduating from high school, and the name of the qualified school they plan to attend. • High school applicants must be applying to be full time students at a two or four year college/university or a technical training college (these are considered qualified schools). n Applicant must maintain a 2.0 GPA minimum on a 4.0 scale in the current year. • College applicants must be full time students at either a two or four year college or university. 22 Archery Magazine

n Applicant must maintain a 2.5 GPA minimum on a 4.0 scale in the current year. Scholarship recipients must compete in archery during the entire academic year. Olympic, PanAm, or World Team members that have graduated from college may apply for training grants.
Scholarship Levels 1. JOAD, NASP, Junior High, High School, Junior College or Trade College Students: Eligible for $500 scholarships. 2. College Freshmen, Sophomore, or Juniors: Scholarship amounts will vary between $500-2,500 based on the archer’s accomplishments, future competition plans, and the following: a. Applicant is attending college, participates in the college archery club program, and is shooting competitively. b. Applicant is attending a college that does not have an archery club program, but the student is shooting competitively on their own. i. If the student starts a new archery club program at their school, this will be a major factor to receive a scholarship the next year. ii. Students that are more successful starting archery clubs will be considered for greater scholarship amounts. 3. If the Applicant has made the current Olympic, PanAm, or Other International Team through the USA Archery selection process: Scholarship amounts will vary between $2,500-5,000 based on the archer’s accomplishments and future competition plans. a. The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee may approve a ‘training grant’ for Olympic, PanAm, or World Team members that have graduated from college, and allow them to use the grant to pay for training, and competition travel expenses without needing to be spent on the archer’s education. (Though this situation is expected to be rare, it will allow top US archers to apply for financial support.) 4. The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee has the discretion to create a larger scholarship for an extraordinary applicant (up to $20,000) depending on specontinued on page 27

president’s report | bruce cull with judy mccutcheon continued from pg. 5 could match his skills and knowledge of archery. There were none who had the patience to teach this skill to others like Bob did. I still have several High Country bows which once belonged to Bob. My son will one day have them and I will tell him of the great man who once called them his own. I will tell him about the many perfect rounds of archery I watched Bob shoot and what an incredible man he was. I will never forget the fun at Panther Creek or the many tournaments we went to especially the Milwaukee Sentinel sports show. Or the hunting trips and campfire at y’alls house in Virden. My first robin hood where Bob made such a big deal of it. There has never been a better mentor or ambassador for the great sport of archery. I hate cancer. I will miss my friend. Archery will miss Bob. I really loved him. God has a good man!” — Patrick McGahey scores, tournament info and more at www.fieldarchery.com 27
