Then it dawned on me that NFAA US Outdoor National Championships, July 25 – 29, 2012, are in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania this year—nearly in my back yard. If you’re not from around here, and you fly in the Philadelphia instead of Harrisburg, you may want to come into town early, tour, and shoot your way over to the tournament at the Mechanicsburg Sportsman’s Association and archery club (www. msa-pa.org).

be of interest. The list is not all inclusive. Do research, like I do when hunting, to make note of archery shops and ranges that might be able to help in case the gear doesn’t make it all, or all in one piece. Outside of Philadelphia is Valley Forge National Historical Park, and there are lots of hiking trails and photo opportunities along the Delaware River. The park is loaded with whitetail deer, so take your camera.

Come into town early and shoot your way over to the tournament at the Mechanicsburg Sportsman’s Association and archery club

If you’re coming into Pennsylvania for the US Outdoor National Field Championships via Philadelphia, there several outdoorsy things to do in addition to touring the city, seeing the Liberty Bell and checking out Valley Forge and Washington’s crossing at the Delaware, going to Gettysburg or driving the countryside. Like hunters who share their hunting information and tips with other hunters, here are a few things that might

If you’re at Valley Forge, there’s an archery shop called French Creek Outfitters that you can visit in Phoenixville. Their site is www.FrenchCreekOutfitters.com. In the Philadelphia area are a number of beautiful parks. One of my favorite is Ridley Creek State Park, 20 minutes from the Philadelphia Airport, and a 2,600-acre treat. There’s a pre-war plantation on the park property, built out of stone, and it makes you wonder how they built those things so long ago. The north side of the park has a golf course.

Inside the park are miles of paved and unpaved hiking trails, a major creek that winds through the park. With a license—and be sure to get a trout stamp—you can fish. The creek is stocked and its free entry. Maps of the park, fishing information and contact information is located at: www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/ continued on page 6 scores, tournament info and more at www.nfaa-archery.org 5

SHOOTING YOUR WAY | continued from page 5 findapark/ridleycreek. There are nearly five miles of horse trails in the park. You can go trail riding, for a fee. The contact information is on the web site or at 610-892-7260. A round the corner from Ridley Creek State Park is Middletown Archery, which has an indoor archery range that is open in the evening, during the week, and daytime hours on Saturday. Call the proshop or check out the web site at www.MiddletownArchery.com for times and shooting fees. There are several fun country orchards and country stores near Middletown Archery and Ridley Creek, too. There is Linvilla Orchards, maybe 10 minutes away, that has rolling orchards, a kids petting zoo, deer pens, and a big country store with bakery, produce, and greenhouse. Information is at www.Linvilla.com. A couple of miles from Linvilla is an outdoor archery range at Delaware County Field and Stream—one of the largest sportsman’s club in the area. It has two archery Top Row—Left: Pennsylvania has plenty of fishing which can offer fun before or after the NFAA Outdoor Field National Championships in Mechanicsburg this year. Center: Canadian Geese are a part of the landscape in Pennsylvania. Right: Enjoying the scenery at the last visit of NFAA Outdoor Field National Championship to Mechanicsburg Sportsman’s Association

ranges: one set up with distances from 10 to 80 yards, where you can shoot from under cover, and a walking range that has bale targets and 3-D animal targets on the range. It also has a crossbow range on the top of the hill by the skeet and trap ranges, if you’re competing with a crossbow. Day passes cost $10 per person. Go into the main clubhouse and get a guest day pass for the archery range. Information is available on the website at www.dvfs.org. Call before you go to make sure visitor shooting is open. As you make your way across the state to Mechanicsburg Sportsman’s Association archery range you might want to do more activities. Touring Amish country is a big thing in Pennsylvania, and there’s a hub of beautiful Amish farms in Lancaster. Driving in the area, you can see working farms, watch horse-drawn buggies along the roads and covered bridges.

Of course a drive to Lancaster should include a visit

archery facilities. Bottom Row—Left: There are plenty of deer in Pennsylvania’s wilderness areas. Middle: Pennsylvania offers outdoors enthusiasts plenty of natural beauty. Right: View wildlife in many Pennsylvania parks.

to Lancaster Archery. They have an enormous show room for all kinds of archery interests, including hunting, competition, and recreational archery for compound, recurve and traditional shooters. Lancaster Archery has a 20-yard indoor range that you can shoot, or go into the video hunting experience room, and have a ball shooting in there. You may want to reserve a time, because it’s popular—even with the locals. Check out the website at www. LancasterArchery.com for showroom hours, phone numbers, and address for your GPS or directions. There are hotels a few minutes away. You may want to plan a half day just for that. Plus, there’s a giant outlet mall around the corner for the other shoppers who might be accompanying you on the trip. If you like burgers, there’s Five Guys, between Lancaster Archery and the outlet mall that will give you energy for either kind of shopping.

that can help you prepare for the tournament. Like hunting, the more you get out there, the better you are able to handle your shooting:

▪ Great Lakes Outdoor Sectional: June 16 – 17 ▪ Mid Atlantic Outdoor Sectional: June 16 – 17

▪ Southwest Outdoor Sectional: May 19 – 20

▪ Midwest Outdoor Sectional: June 23-24

▪ Southeast Outdoor Sectional: May 25 – 26

▪ US Outdoor National Field Championships: July 25 through 29

▪ Southern Outdoor Sectional: June 9-10 ▪ Northwest Outdoor Sectional: June 16 – 17 ▪ New England Outdoor Sectional: June 16 – 17

So try a sectional. And because NFAA Nationals are so centrally located this year, try to get there, too. Your big game hunting this fall could benefit from it. n

The shoot-offs were awesome!!

couple of arrows inside out for the weekend. At that point the top two Vegas guys were out of the running and it was up to Reo and Levi. As the judges were going across all the bales, it became obvious that Reo had dropped his and Levi was solid with all five inside out. It was a very emotional moment for him and his wife and he broke down a bit celebrating his first indoor National Championship. He was honored, excited and humbled that he’d beaten the best in the world on an indoor line. It was something he cherished since he’s usually perceived as just a 3-D shooter. It was important to him before the shoot-off began that when I do his introduction I mention that he thanks God for the support and grace of even being there. n

By Chuck Cooley, National Pro Chairman

At the 2012 NFAA Indoor National Championships, a very professional class was shooting off for first—seniors, women and men. The seniors went deep, several ends; Steve and Tony went back and forth, arrow-for-arrow, and it was a great battle. They were backslapping and high-fiving each other for pushing the other so hard for a good win and for making good shots. You could tell they have a great friendship and relationship. The balance was clear but opposite. They both wanted to win, but they didnt want their buddy to loose. It was very, very refreshing

to see such sportsmanship on the line. The women went a little quicker. They started off strong, none of them giving an inch to the others. Third and fourth place were the first to be determined, then a couple ends later it went third, followed by another end or two for first and second. I believe it was Sara’s first indoor National Championships event, but she also did very well in Las Vegas for the World Cup. Kailey had her first high finish like that, too. The men also went quite a while, ending with a sixway shootoff. Surprisingly Chance fell out of first when he dropped one low. Grant made a very strong show but was the next to go out, followed by Jesse. Braden fell next— also a surprise since both he and Jesse had shot all but a

I shoot for the fun of it now. Nothing serious at all so it doesn’t matter if I hit the spot or not—but I still get excited when I break a nock or hit the spot from eighty-yards. Shooting archery to win is different. Shooting to win is hard work. Shooting to win requires complete commitment and the smartest approach to practice and preparation that you can muster. After you’ve done all of that then you have to remind yourself that archery is still fun (and mean it)...and then go shoot the tournament. Pre-tournament preparation is just as important for the mental game as shooting-practice is for the physical form game. Taking care of the “business of shooting” in the weeks and months leading up to a tournament plays a large part in how well you meet your goals for that tournament. Fail to organize at home and you will ensure that you get to the tournament “unorganized”—and suffer the consequences. Following are some ideas that you need to try. You will find some of them useful, maybe all of them, and then again you’ll find some that don’t fit with your own plan. If, however, you have no plan at all then don’t dismiss any of these concepts – you need them to help get yourself organized.

Organize your physical practice schedule by dividing it into smaller, manageable time frames. We need to review those time frames and then build into them the needed work on the pre-tournament mental practice. The largest time unit is the “macrocycle” which is about a yearlong. Serious training plans will divide that year into eight to ten “mesocycles” each four to six weeks

long with each mesocycle divided into seven to ten-day “microcycles”. Using this structure we can effectively manage athletic training to reach our peak performance level for those few really important tournaments we plan to win.

tournaments until you reach the first tournament of the year. Preceding that first tournament, mark off your calendar into 4 to 6 weeks intervals backtracking to about Thanksgiving. Or some other date you plan to start practicing after hunting season is over. During my early years as a pro I took little time off from practice during the fall months although I did reduce the load substantially. MESOCYCLE PLANNING

r. Begin your training plans with a multi-month calenda you Mark the two or three most important tournaments e want to shoot and plan backwards from each becaus the you always know what needs to be done during week preceding the tournament.

BACKWARD PLANNING MESOCYCLES Begin by printing full-page calendars for each month of the coming year. With the two or three most important tournaments marked on these calendars you can begin with “backplanning” from each. SAMPLE MACROCYCLE The end of your competition year will likely be in August. Mine was usually the NFAA Field Nationals held the last week of July. Yours might be one of the big 3-D tournaments held in mid August. In either case, your calendar planning begins with the date of that tournament. Once the date is marked you can set a mesocycle preceding it back to the day after the previous tournament. If the time is less than thirty-days then mark the intervening time frame into two or three microcycles. Mark additional mesocycles by backtracking on the calendar between

We know that the mesocycle immediately preceding any tournament is the most important for practicing official scoring rounds. During this four to six week period you need to be practicing both the physical shooting sequence and the mental thought sequence you plan to use for each and every scoring arrow. You also need to do any pre-tournament travel planning and equipment preparation. MESOCYCLE PLANNING CHART

The training you do in the final four-to-six week mesocycle preceding a tournament is critical to your success. The final week of this mesocycle should contain lots of scoring rounds just like in the tournament.

The mesocycle leading up to a tournament should be divided into four or five microcycles (time continued on page 18

permitting), each seven to ten days long, so that your practice and mental focus levels can be managed according to a plan. When you played high school or college sports your coaching staff did this for you by regulating your practice schedule and practice activities before the first game of the season and between games after that. Now you have to do it for yourself or with the help of a coach. Are you doing that on paper? Or just thinking about it? I suggest that if you are serious then it’s time to write it down!

continued from page 17

The intensity of consecutive microcycles must be varied as well. If the sample cycle above is of greater overall work load than the previous cycle then the next cycle must be of lesser intensity so the body can recover from the workload. (Alternate cycles after that may have increasingly higher loads in order to build endurance.) During this recovery a stronger and more developed body will emerge. Without alternating periods of high load with reduced workload the body’s performance will not recover and may, in fact, regress.

MICROCYCLE: 10-DAY, LOWVOLUME EXAMPLE (perhaps for a December practice schedule) 1) 30 shots @ blank bale => bow hand & release hand + 10 shots @ 20 yd five-spot target. 2) 20 @ 20 yd five-spot target + 10 bb (blank bale). 3) No shooting. 4) Score 30 @ 20 yd @ local club 5) No shooting. 6) Score 30 @ 20 yd @ local club 7) 30 @ blank bale => bow hand & release hand. 8) No shooting. 9) 20 @ 20 yd @ five-spot target + 10 bb. 10) 40 @ 20 yd @ local club. Shooters preparing for a major tournament will shoot more arrows than this but everyone must pay close attention to resting their bodies. No one can maintain a continuous high volume of shooting over a long period and expect to get better. What happens to everyone is a breakdown in muscle conditioning unless those muscles get time to rest, a time to restore themselves and to grow to a higher level of strength and performance. Every microcycle must have two or three days of rest built into it. Every microcycle must also have a variety of activities, focus level and duration. This variety is good for both the mind and body so that neither gets stale or over-conditioned to one specific activity. 18 Archery Magazine

Keeping simple but good notes always pays dividends. You save lots of time not repeating things you’ve already tried and you can track your skill level as training progresses.

REVIEW: THE MENTAL THOUGHT SEQUENCE As you near tournament time your physical form has been whipped into rather good shape. That means that you no longer need to micro manage any single physical action or phase of the shot sequence at the blank bale – you’ve trained the subconscious mind to run it. That leaves your conscious mind free to “think” about other stuff and the really neat feature of this situation is YOU get to decide what those thoughts are and when to think them. Here’s a sample of the conscious thought sequence that I have used. You may like to arrange it differently, which is fine, just be sure to have a plan to follow. SAMPLE THOUGHT SEQUENCE 1) Affirmation of my shot objective => execute with back tension. 2) Breathe to relax.

3) Visually acquire target and mentally visualize the arrow impacting it. 4) Feel my full-draw-position and transfer holding into my back muscles. 5) Continue back tension thru release. 6) Evaluate & breathe. The important concept to remember here is that you “choose” what you consciously think. You can choose to think about the present task and allow other non-present thoughts to pass out of your mind. It takes practice, yes, but you can learn to do it – you can learn “tunnel” vision for your mental plan. And once you learn it your game will get better when it’s “crunch” time. What’s not in the plan is important also. So what’s missing? If you are thinking positive shot-making thoughts then you are not thinking negative thoughts or those extraneous thoughts that take you away from the present time and process. If you learn your plan and stick to it then there is no time to be thinking about matters other than the thoughts on your list. And so when one of these “other” thoughts barges into your desired thought sequence you have to stop, let that thought pass and then restart your mental program at the beginning. You can learn to do this and get good at it but only if you plan it and then practice it. PLAN YOUR THINKING and THEN THINK YOUR PLAN! THE PRE-TOURNAMENT MESOCYCLE The four to six weeks prior to any tournament is a critical period in your training. It is for any athlete in any sport. A very structured schedule of action and rest not only prepares the body for the upcoming important event it also prepares the mind. That same time should also allow you to do some contingency planning for those times when something goes wrong continued on page 20

Dwell on the Positive Terry Wunderle

Once there was a little steam engine that tried to pull a big train up a hill. The process began very slowly and then the little engine started repeating to itself, “I think I can. I think I can.” As the railroad cars chugged into motion, the little engine carried the train over the hill chanting, “I knew I could. I knew I could.” At an archery competition, you need to have an upbeat attitude like that of the little steam engine. As you view the tournament and your performance with a “can do” attitude, you increase your chances of staying focused and shooting effective form. What your mind thinks, your body will try to accomplish. Through practice, an archer establishes a consistent form. In competition, it is important to picture yourself executing the same shot that you developed on the practice range. Attempt to feel the muscles that you use when shooting good form. This consistency in shot sequence is what enables you to shoot tight groups away from competition. It is also the same form that will produce tight groups on the tournament field. Dwell on the positive. Remind yourself that you do shoot a good, consistent shot and that is all you need in order to have a successful performance at a tournament.

thirty arrows on the mark. A friend walks up and asks you how you are doing. Are you going to answer, “I missed one,” and then follow this with an explanation for the missed arrow? You shot twenty-nine perfect arrows the first half. This means that nearly every arrow was released with perfect form. Why not take the highroad and dwell on your success? Positive thoughts yield positive results. When you think of an upcoming competition, how do you picture your performance? Do you see yourself shooting a strong and rhythmic shot like you do on the practice range? Are you calm and focused? If the answers to these questions are yes, the odds of having a successful tournament are greatly enhanced. I would estimate that over a third of the shooters are good enough to place at most archery events. Ironically, most of these people seldom or never place at a tournament. Why? They have developed their shooting skills, but have done little or no work in developing their mental game. Many archers can continued on page 20

When my daughter Sally was a teenager competing in an indoor national championship, she hit a center ten on her eighth shot. The problem was it was in someone else’s target. She looked at me, shook her head, and stood there for a moment to recompose her thought process. Another coach standing beside me asked, “How will she do on her next shot?” I replied, “I have ten dollars that says it will be a ten in the right target.” The next shot was a bull’s-eye. When Sally came off the line we talked about how good her form was and the fact that there were over a hundred shots remaining in the two-day tournament. My advice was, “Shoot your great form and you will do the best that you can do.” She did and won the championship by one point. Every archer occasionally makes a bad shot. The effective archer puts it behind him or herself and follows up with a series of good shots. Rehashing the bad arrow leaves a negative picture in your mind, which will create self-doubt, change your point of focus, and perhaps alter the shot execution. Imagine yourself at the halfway point of an indoor tournament. You have hit twenty-nine of the scores, tournament info and more at www.nfaa-archery.org 19

shoot, but very few can remain calm and focused at a competition. Developing mental imagery to create a positive approach at tournaments is just as important as the practice of shooting arrows. Nearly all archers have to work at maintaining a positive attitude at competitions. Making a bad shot does not necessarily mean you will lose. It does indicate that you are going to have to work harder to place. Even if placing is out of the question, you owe it to yourself to do well the rest of the game. By turning the situation around and shooting your best during the rest of the event, you will be building a stronger foundation to launch your next performance. If an archer can maintain a positive attitude concerning his or her ability to execute a perfect shot, the score and tournaments will take care of themselves. Logically thinking, shooting well is easy. All you have to do is remain calm, stay focused, and shoot consistent form. You do it in practice because that is your goal. Keep that objective at the tournament. Be positive and believe in your ability to execute form that will make you successful. n

- it’s like Murphy said, “If it can go wrong, it will!” Here’s a sample-training program you might use to prepare for the NFAA Indoor National Championships. That tournament uses the five-spot blue & white target face on which you must shoot one official round each of two consecutive days. The five-spot target is more difficult to shoot than the three-spot target because of shooting five arrows in the four minutes allowed. In short, it’s more physically demanding. If you cheat on this you are only cheating yourself and this leads to disappointment on tournament weekend. You must learn to “see” yourself already at the tournament for these practice rounds. It helps to have your thought sequence printed on a 3x5 card in your quiver. Get it out and read it often. Read it before the first arrow of each end. Read it after the last arrow of the end. Read it between ends. Doing so will keep your conscious mind on the “present” task at hand and help prevent your thoughts from wandering. During those hours when you are not shooting it may be helpful to think about your beginning game. In other words think only about the first few

arrows of the tournament. See yourself shooting the two practice ends and getting smoother and settled during those ten arrows. Then see yourself shooting that first arrow for score and smoothly moving to the next and then the next, etc. This is a manageable task. Thinking about shooting the entire first round and achieving a certain score is a bit too much to carry in your head so don’t do it – reduce the load and think about the beginning only. KISS = Keep It Smart Simple! Because simplicity repeats under pressure! Most indoor archers I know shoot in a local league several nights a week. If you do this then your practice schedule will have to be adjusted to accommodate the league shooting load so that you do not over-practice trying to get ready for the big tournament. Control the number of arrows shot being sure to schedule rest days. SETTING GOALS Take out a piece of paper or find a page in your archery notebook/ log and write your goals for the next tournament for which you are training. There are three types of goals you can make: 1) performance goals, 2) result-oriented goals or 3) Process-oriented goals. Performance goals are linked to results also. An example would be “I want to average 50 X’s per round” or “I want to shoot my personal best”. Result oriented goals are those that focus on where you finish relative to your competitors. An example would be “I want to finish in the top three” or “I want to win”. A process goal would be “I want to execute at least 50 out of 60 shots with proper back tension”. These types of goals help you learn and/or rebuild form. Process goals also help you stay focused in the present and, therefore, can and should be used by shooters at continued on page 39

NFAA National by John Pawlowski Pennsylvania State Director

Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and Enola, Pennsylvania are neighbors. To get to Mechanicsburg Archers for the 2012 NFAA Outdoor National Championship, July 25 through 29, you must go through Enola. So, set your GPS unit to 493 Sample Bridge Road, Enola, Pa 17025 and enjoy the ride to beautiful Pennsylvania. This advance story is to urge NFAA archers to make the trip to Mechanicsburg Archers for an archery experience that will last a lifetime. For more complete details visit these two web sites—www.psaa. net or www.pfata.net Five world class 28-target archery ranges await the anxious toxophilites. The courses are identified by color, yellow, red, white, blue, and black course. Of course, an area and courses for pre-tournament practice will be open on Monday and Tuesday, July 23 and 24. Mechanicsburg Archers is the scene of many archery tournaments annually. The weekend prior to the National is no exception. A state championship will be held there July 21 and 22. Shooting each day begins at 8:30 am. If you want to shoot as a guest in that tournament, contact Julia at Julia_yarlett@comcast.net. Give Julia at least a two week notice. When not shooting archery, there

are many family venues and fun places to visit while in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area. Harrisburg is the capital city of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania’s state capital building is among the most beautiful in the United States. If you are making the trip to Pennsylvania for more than archery, places like Cabelas, Lancaster Archery Supply, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro Shop, world famous Hershey Park, Gettysburg, Philadelphia, New York City, Inner Harbor at Baltimore, Maryland and Kinsey’s Archery Products are an easy drive from the Harrisburg area. July is the perfect month to visit Lancaster County. Many of Pennsylvania’s Amish live in Lancaster County. License plates from every state in the Union are spotted along roads flooded with tourists to that delightful county. A ride in an Amish horse drawn buggy is an experience long remembered. Lancaster County also features many outlets that feature nationally known brands. You may even find a bargain. Many nationally known motels and hotels are in the Harrisburg

and Carlisle areas. Some lodges are offering discounts to archers, but you must say your stay is for archery. Over the years, I’ve attended many archery tournaments at continued on page 38

Where are We? Mechanicsburg Sportsmen’s Association’s physical address is 493 Sample Bridge Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Our website is www. msa-pa.org Our 153 acre club is easy to get to, located only 5 minutes from exit 57 of I81. From the exit, take Rt. 114 West to the light. Turn right on Rt. 944, go approximately 1/3 mile and turn left onto Miller’s Gap Road. Go approximately 1 mile and turn right at the “Y” onto Sample Bridge Road. Club is located on the right.

About Our Courses Our archery facilities include five (5) 28 target NFAA approved field courses. Most of our shooting lanes are wide enough to accommodate four archers at one time. There are no steep hills to climb; they are like walking on a golf course (grass and all). The target butts on our permanent courses are made from Celotex. This sometimes leaves a slight residue on arrow shafts. Using an arrow lubricant will help prevent sticking and a pot scrubber will help remove any residue.

Easton Foundations National Field Archery Association Foundation

EASTON FOUNDATIONS NATIONAL FIELD ARCHERY ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION JOINT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 1. Deadline for 2012 scholarship applications to be received at the NFAAF Office in Yankton is December 31, 2012. The winners will be announced at the World Archery Festival Vegas Shoot, February 2013. 2. The NFAA Scholarship Committee will review and rank the applications, place each applicant into the appropriate category and present their suggestions to the Joint Scholarship Approval Committee for their approval. The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee, consisting of two Directors of the National Field Archery Association Foundation and two Directors of the Easton Foundations, will make a joint decision on winners and the final amounts for each scholarship. 3. The NFAA National Office will notify all applicants if their application was denied or approved, and the amount of the scholarship. If approved, it will also describe the procedure for the scholarship payment. 4. For all scholarships greater than $500, the recipient will receive an Archery Activity Report form that must be completed and sent to the NFAA National Office twice a year, showing their archery activities during the year. Applicant Requirements The maximum amount of all scholarships for the first three years will be $50,000 per year. The goal is to provide 50% of the scholarships to recurve archers and 50% to compound archers. A secondary goal will be to split the scholarships equally between men & women. • Applicants must be a member of the NFAA or the NAA/USA Archery. • Applicants that are not graduating from high school in the current year (JOAD, NASP, junior high, or high school freshman/sophomore archers) may apply. n For this group, any approved scholarships will be held by the Foundation until the student notifies the Foundation they are graduating from high school, and the name of the qualified school they plan to attend. • High school applicants must be applying to be full time students at a two or four year college/university or a technical training college (these are considered qualified schools). n Applicant must maintain a 2.0 GPA minimum on a 4.0 scale in the current year. • College applicants must be full time students at either a two or four year college or university. 34 Archery Magazine

n Applicant must maintain a 2.5 GPA minimum on a 4.0 scale in the current year. Scholarship recipients must compete in archery during the entire academic year. Olympic, PanAm, or World Team members that have graduated from college may apply for training grants.

Scholarship Levels 1. JOAD, NASP, Junior High, High School, Junior College or Trade College Students: Eligible for $500 scholarships. 2. College Freshmen, Sophomore, or Juniors: Scholarship amounts will vary between $500-2,500 based on the archer’s accomplishments, future competition plans, and the following: a. Applicant is attending college, participates in the college archery club program, and is shooting competitively. b. Applicant is attending a college that does not have an archery club program, but the student is shooting competitively on their own. i. If the student starts a new archery club program at their school, this will be a major factor to receive a scholarship the next year. ii. Students that are more successful starting archery clubs will be considered for greater scholarship amounts. 3. If the Applicant has made the current Olympic, PanAm, or Other International Team through the USA Archery selection process: Scholarship amounts will vary between $2,500-5,000 based on the archer’s accomplishments and future competition plans. a. The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee may approve a ‘training grant’ for Olympic, PanAm, or World Team members that have graduated from college, and allow them to use the grant to pay for training, and competition travel expenses without needing to be spent on the archer’s education. (Though this situation is expected to be rare, it will allow top US archers to apply for financial support.) 4. The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee has the discretion to create a larger scholarship for an extraordinary applicant (up to $20,000) depending on specontinued on page 39

Mechanicsburg Archers. I, like most archers, simply like being there. After the day’s shooting, participants don’t seem to be in much of a hurry to leave except on final awards day. The atmosphere at Mechanicsburg is archery, serious archery. The identical flyer that can be found at either one of the above web sites is very detailed. Check it out. Major airlines use the Harrisburg International

Airport and the Baltimore/Washington Airport is an easy drive on Interstate 43. If you are driving, find 1-81 in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area drive to exit 57 to West Rt. 114. Go 1 mile to right on Rt. 944. Go .3 miles to left on Miller’s Gap Road. Go .9 miles to a “Y” in the road, then turn right on Sample Bridge Road to the club’s entrance. n

GC Archery

Introduces Revolutionary Archery Target System New GameChanger™ target system simulates real-life hunting experiences with high-definition, interchangeable image roll targets of wild game animals GC Archery, a developer of innovative, game-changing sporting equipment, today introduced the GameChanger™ Archery Target System, a revolutionary archery target system that simulates a real-life hunting experience with high-definition, interchangeable image rolls of wild game animals in their natural habitats. The system is ideal for bow hunters and archery enthusiasts of all skill levels who are looking to hone their accuracy and experience the thrill of the hunt year-round. Combining new target system concepts with proven practices, the GameChanger™ is a personal range target that features a specialized, layered foam compression structure and the first-ever series of highdefinition image rolls of wild game animals that visually immerse bow hunters in a lifelike hunting scenario. Every GameChanger™ roll contains six images, each 32 inches tall by 48 inches wide, complete with a size scale to shooting distance ratio in the target’s upper corner for more simulated realism. Images are indexed across the face of the target system, so hunters can quickly scroll from one image to the next. Additionally, vitals areas are superimposed on each animal to assist with accuracy and help the hunter learn the most ethical arrow placement. Unlike traditional targets, theGameChanger™system’s images are printed with ultraviolet-resistant ink on high-quality, waterproof vinyl material that stretches when shot, so targets can be hit hundreds of times before needing to be replaced. Currently, GC Archery offers image rolls featuring continent-specific wild game animals from North America, Europe and Africa; species-specific rolls, such as all whitetail deer; and even a roll featuring fun and challenging games, like tic-tac-toe and roulette.
